OBJECTS OF DESIRE

An Important Charity Jewelry and Fine Art Event, Curated by Sharyn and Glenn Bradford By W.A. Muller “Objects of Desire” is an important charity jewelry and fine art event from the Gatsby Era to today. Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry’s 14th Annual “Shop for a Cause” Pop-Up Event at Hempstead House, the Main Castle on the Sands Point Preserve is benefiting the “Campaign to Save Hempstead House.” “Since the beginning our shop has served as a vessel to raise funds for very worthy causes. Our philanthropy is continuous as we give throughout the year. It is part of both our personal and brand DNA and the support of our loyal clientele has allowed us to give back and raise tremendous awareness for charities that may fall below the radar. We have a deep connection to each of our charities,” states Sharyn Bradford fine artist and co-owner of Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry, on Lower Main Street in Port Washington. The Sands Point Preserve, the former Guggenheim Estate, is one of the few remaining, but most impressive, of the Gold Coast estates built by iconic American families on the North Shore of Long Island at the dawn of the 20th century. Just 20 miles from Manhattan, it is the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the Nassau County Parks, Recreation, and Museums Department. It is 'East Egg' from F. Scott Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby. The Guggenheim family generously donated this 216 acre, mile-long 20 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

beachfront estate to the public. Unfortunately it falls below the radar of so many as it is a hidden jewel of historic importance. “As a matter of fact, until Lillian McCormick, who spearheaded our 13th Annual ‘Shop for a Cause’ Committee, invited Karli Hagedorn, the Chairman of Friends of the Sands Point Preserve to partner with us last year, it fell below our radar as well,” states Glenn Bradford. A Shared Passion The definition of Legacy is something that is handed down or remains from one generation to the next. Friends of the Sands Point Preserve is tasked with the mission of preserving the grand estate where important American history was made. “This concept of legacy and preserving history resonates at a deep level for us. It is at the very core of what we do at Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry,” states Glenn. For nearly 30 years, Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry has been entrusted with its clients’ most intimate of possessions. Glenn and Sharyn collaborate to create award-winning jewelry with a deeper meaning, often times incorporating their clients’ most coveted diamonds and gemstones into highly wearable and versatile designs. What is born out of this process is a magical bespoke design that bears each client’s name. These designs become part of their respective legacy.

The Bradford’s loyal clientele also come to them because of their long standing reputation, vast knowledge and their ability to meticulously restore highly cherished pieces that have been passed through many generations, bringing each piece back to its former glory. Karli Hagedorn, the Chairman of Friends of the Sands Point Preserve states, “Last year Glenn and Sharyn Bradford invited my charity ‘Friends of the Sands Point Preserve’ to participate in their 13th Annual ‘Shop for a Cause.’ This was my first introduction to this special shop. I was immediately drawn to their spiritual Buddha Collection which I now wear daily. I have since begun my design journey with Glenn and have commissioned him to reinvent my sentimental diamonds and gemstones into highly personal designs with a deeper meaning, while simultaneously raising funds for my cause.” She continues, “Over the past year, we have become friends and collaborators on several events to benefit the Preserve. While planning our current fundraiser with them, it was discovered that Hempstead House, the centerpiece of the 216acre waterfront estate originally home to the Gould and Guggenheim families, is now in peril, requiring extensive restoration work on its massive stone exterior.” Hempstead House is the main revenue source for Friends of the Sands Point Preserve. Currently, Friends of the Sands Point Preserve receives neither state nor federal funds and 90% of its annual operating budget is raised through rentals to movie and TV production, photo shoots, weddings and other events, all at Hempstead House. The Bradfords felt an obligation and true sense of urgency to act and to raise awareness at a national level to save the property. They reached out to their friends and long-time partners at Atelier Swarovski, who are known for their philanthropic work, to partner with them. After touring Hempstead House, the grand property, and lunching on the great lawn overlooking Hempstead Harbor, Atelier Swarovski joined Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry as a founding partner sponsor of the ‘Campaign to Save Hempstead House.'

“Realizing how important it is for visitors to tour Hempstead House and the grounds of the Preserve, we decided to create a Pop-Up Event that would be worthy of the Guggenheim Family; and one that will attract many who are interested in learning about the rich history of the estate while ‘Shopping for a Cause,’” states Sharyn. What visitors should expect The event will feature some of the most coveted estate jewelry, diamonds and rare watches, including signed pieces from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Rolex and Patek Philippe. Collectors and jewelry lovers alike will be dazzled by the jaw-dropping display of noteworthy estate pieces and important diamonds. “A few of our favorite bespoke designs include a 1909 signed Cartier 70 carat Golconda Diamond necklace that detaches to form two bracelets and a 14.76cttw Ceylon Sapphire Ring with side trapezoid diamonds,” states Glenn. Peruse through Glenn Bradford’s award-winning collections, limited edition Atelier Swarovski exclusively at Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry, and Fine Art from accomplished artists Sharyn Bradford, Rachelle Krieger, and Beth O'Donnell, while enjoying the grandeur of the castle. The Pop-Up four day "Shop for a Cause" Shopping Event at Hempstead House begins on November 19th with a VIP opening night gala with host, fashion icon, Iris Apfel. It will then continue, opening to the public from Friday November 20th through Sunday the 22nd, from 11:00am-6:00pm. The “Shop for a Cause” Holiday Shopping Season will then continue at Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry at 279 Main Street in Port Washington through Christmas.

SALUTATIONS & THE MAKING OF SABRINA

I

Story & Photos by Monica Randall

n the northern end of Glen Cove, hidden away on a private island, where you have to cross a narrow causeway is one of the most spectacular estates on the North Shore. A pair of 12-foot gates and security cameras keeps trespassers away. The massive granite stone English-style manor house was built by Junius Spencer Morgan, the grand son of J. Pierpont Morgan who had his own massive pile on the adjoining island to the east. Salutations was one of the last of the great manors to be designed by Bullard & Woolsey in 1929. The 26-acre paradise had it all. The house built on a cliff overlooking the sound, a Hollywood style swimming pool, and cabana, kennels for the show dogs and fox hunting hounds, an aviary, greenhouses, tennis courts and a unique Moroccan gazebo. The formal gardens and reflecting pools were breathtaking. I spent years trying in vain to get permission to photograph the property, but never got closer than the shoreline while sailing with friends in a small motorboat. One day while heading out to Morgans Island next door, I noticed the gates to Salutations were open. Taking a chance and hoping I might find someone on the estate to talk to I drove up to the main house and pulled the long chain to the iron dragon that served as a bell. I could hear the cathedral like chimes reverberating throughout the Gothic halls. Moments later a stiff, liveried butler creaked open the massive oak door; why did they always look like Boris Karloff? He glared down at me. I was 16 and hadn’t learned to talk coherently yet, and began to babble. “I just love your house and could I please photograph it while the wisteria are cascading down the parapets like a waterfall of lavender snow?” He stood silent for a moment. “Go away you insufferable little pest,” he grumbled and closed the door. Well, actually, no English butler would talk that way, even to the rat exterminator. What he really said in a dire tone was: “I suggest you leave the property immediately.” Crestfallen, I slithered off. Some years latter I chartered a private plane and flew over the island and tool the enclosed black and white shot with a rolli-flex camera and zoom lens. That was at least legal as long as you didn’t come closer than a thousand feet. It was also legal to enter any property on the Gold Coast if you were on a horse, but the gates and stonewalls made that impossible. However, if you had a brave horse that was a strong swimmer there was another way. Everyone in the area knew there was a dangerous channel of fast moving current that separated the island from the Welywn estate to the west. During low tide the water level dropped to only two feet, but when the tide swept back in you could easily drown in ten feet of current. No it was not worth the risk.

Arial View of Salutations, Monica Randall 1968 Junius Spencer Morgan Morgan Jr. had been a noted yachtsman and his love for sailing was reflected in his vast collection of ship models that were enclosed in glass display cases all over the house. A long winding drive led to a round center courtyard and Gothic style front entrance to the house. The massive oak door gave the feeling of entering a Transylvanian castle. The manor house was one of the the last of the vestiges of unchanged Gold Coast splendor. One entered a round domed entrance hall where seven glassed in Ming figures of Chinese noblemen were set in tall wall niches. To the left there was a long dark oak paneled hall decorated with fine shipping and yachting seascapes and family portraits.

lit crystal chandeliers. Mrs. Morgan was known for her show dogs, which won prizes all over the world. Her extensive brick kennels were built close to the house and the animals would bark the moment anyone set foot on the island. Elsewhere on the property there was a large semi-oval swimming pool surrounded by Grecian pillars, but in the late 70s it was replaced by a spectacular modern one.

Some of the rooms were massive and decorated in the style of Rebecca’s – “Manderlay,” the classic 30s novel about a great English castle where everyone in the book either drowned and was eaten by crabs or tossed themselves over the nearby cliffs. But aside from those macabre images the manor provoked, it was a very peaceful place full of art and music, and the chirping of exotic birds in massive cages.

A New Lord of the Manor John Samauls, a financier and art collector turned in the winning bid and became the proud new owner of the exclusive island. He spent several years decorating and lightening the walls, stripping the dark mahogany color in the drawing room and pickling it in warm shades of golden hues. The room was always filled with colorful and fragrant orchids. Salutations soon became one of the great showplaces in the country, and Samuals was open to the idea of allowing filming and photo shoots to take place there. All through the 80s and 90s we shot many fashion layouts and celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, who posed in her famous purple gown for the cover of Vogue and Demi Moore was featured in an Edwardian gown for Vanity Fair.

In the main drawing room, there was a priceless 12-foot Coromandel screen along with many fine pieces of English furnishings, oriental rugs and an antique silver collection. The Morgan children had their own 8-foot high replica of the manor house complete with miniature mahogany furniture and electrically 24 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

After Mr. Morgan passed away in 1960, Mrs. Louise Morgan continued to live there with a large staff. After her death, the entire estate was put up for sale and all of the furnishings and art treasures were auctioned off in a spectacular 4-day sale in 1974 that brought in unexpected millions.

At one Vanity Fair shoot, we were working in the formal garden using some of the pampered resident parrots; one of them spoke French. He was a beautiful blue and green Macaw named, Valentino, after the silent film legend. The photographer was clicking away as the bird perched on a Grecian urn when out of nowhere an eagle with a wingspan of four feet swooped out of the sky and plunged its talons into the screaming parrot and flew off towards the Sound. Everyone was hysterical. Luckily the eagle didn’t get far before it lost its grip and the parrot fell into the water with a splash and was too terrified to make a sound. As luck would have it, a small sloop was sailing close to the shore and saw the bird floundering in the water. The quick thinking yachtsman quickly scooped him up in a net and brought the bird to shore. I ran barefoot into the waves to retrieve him, and the bird being a pedigree looked back at the sailors and said, “Merci beaucoup.” The men waved as they sailed off, their Seawanhaka Yacht Club flag waving wildly in their wake.

Jacky Kennedy It remained a well-kept secret from the media, that after John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Jacky fearing for her life moved to Salutations’ large guesthouse. The stone and ivy covered mini mansion had a sweeping view of the Sound and city skyline to the west. It is ironic that years later Carolyn Bissett, who was about to marry John Kennedy Jr. was photographed in the garden at Salutations for Vanity Fair Magazine. They were both killed in a tragic plane crash a short time later. The Making of Sabrina In 1953, moviegoers were charmed by the black and white version of Sabrina, starring Audrey Hepburn, Humprey Bogart and William Holden. Most of the scenes were shot in and around Glen Cove, including the Glen Cove railroad station. Who can forget Hepburn and Bogart dancing in the glassed-in tennis court while the haunting tune, “Isn’t it Romantic,” floated in the air from the distant orchestra. November 2015 | 25

The Million Dollar Set for Sabrina, and Movie Extras Hepburn set a fashion style no one could match wearing a white organza embroidered gown by Paris designer, Givenchy. Publicity photos of her in that breathtaking gown appeared on the covers of fashion magazines all over the world. In the film’s opening, young Sabrina, who is the chauffer’s daughter, describes the lavish lifestyle here on the Gold Coast, where she could only watch from a distance. You hear her famous voice as the camera pans the vast English manor house, Killenworth, perched high on a hill, then cuts to a pool and greenhouse, Peacock Point, then moves to a large indoor tennis court, the Pratt Playhouse, on Dasoris Lane. The scene fades to black, then the camera moves in on a close-up of a privileged goldfish named George. It’s one of the best openings of a film – ever. In 1993, Paramount Pictures decided a remake was in order. When I got the call from Joe Iaberti, the location manager, who asked me to help duplicate the original locations used in the 50s version, we ran into problems. Killenworth was now owened by the Russian Embassy and they wouldn’t talk to us. The original tennis court where Hepburn and Bogart danced was 26 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

now a public Y.M.C.A. and the massive building was turned into a modern gym. The greenhouse that had been filmed by moonlight at Peacock Point had fallen into ruin and was demolished in the 70s. But Salutations, just north of Dasoris Lane had everything the award-winning director, Sidney Pollock, wanted. The property was leased by Paramount for a year for a record one million dollars, but major work had to be done. The new owner had just bought the private island and hadn’t moved in yet, so she was thrilled that the film company would rebuild the crumbling seawall. The movie starring Harrison Ford, Greg Kinnear and Julia Ormond as Sabrina, would be a modern version of the 50s classic. The party scenes turned out to be some of the most lavish sets ever created for a film. As often happened, having helped with the locations I was asked to be one of the dancing extras at the two formal galas that were setup on the West lawn. A giant dance floor and stage for the orchestra was built and thousands of sting lights were hung from the trees and crisscrossed over the dance floor. Dozens of Arabian-style blue and white tents, each

with lavish table settings, were designed for the dining guests. Within view of the dance floor, there 300-foot yachts draped with party lights from mast to stern were moored on the water’s edge. Filming went on all night but had to shut down by 5am when the resident birds started chirping noisily, drowning out the conversations of the actors. By then we were all exhausted from dancing in high heels for ten hours, but we still had to trudge back from the dressing tents, get out of our gowns and jewels, then go back to our day jobs. None of us slept for three weeks. On the first night of filming, I accidentally crashed into Harrison Ford while rushing out of the dressing tent. I didn’t recognize him. He was wearing jeans, western boots and gasses, and had not yet gotten into his role as the billionaire, ready to steal Sabrina’s heart. The Ford I envisioned, was 6’3, cracking a whip and running from giant snakes in

“Raiders of the Lost Ark.” What shocked me the most was that I was taller than him, and I’m barely 5’7. But he was terrific on set and joked around with all of the extras, keeping our spirits up during the long endless hours of filming. In the new version, the intimate dance scene with Ford and Ormond was filmed in the glassed-in Camelia House at Planting-Fields Arboretum. The indoor swimming pool with the tropical hand-painted murals was shot at Cherrywood, in Locust Valley. The movie came out in 1994, got fair reviews, but was no match for the Bogart, Hepburn original, which remains one of the most beloved films of its era. Author’s Note: If you like old movies and behind-the-scenes gossip, I’ve put together a one-hour slide program called: The Gold Coast in Movies. It is available to local libraries and private clubs. 45 CLOCK TOWER LANE Luxurious Living in Old Westbury By Carla Hall D’Ambra In early autumn, while on my way to view a home at 45 Clock Tower Lane in Old Westbury, I drive through one of the many lovely, tree-engulfed back roads of Long Island’s exquisite North Shore, and I drink in the beauty of the journey. My glimpse of the magnificent homes secluded away from the road and enveloped in the lush, vibrant greenery of manicured lawns, reminds me of the wealth and richness of our Long Island Gold Coast communities. I arrive at my destination and I am impressed. 45 Clock Tower Lane in Old Westbury is a beautiful property featuring English gardens, rock walls, a wrap-around terrace made of bluestone, and a putting green on the back lawn. As I stroll the impeccably landscaped 1.5 acres, I admire the lovely in-ground Gunite saltwater swimming pool that is encased in a brick country club deck, and I learn that the pool is heated with green energy and filtrated with a saline system. 45 Clock Tower Lane in Old Westbury is a residence drenched in history, yet refined and re-designed with all the modern conveniences for luxurious living. This property is known as Wheatley Hill, an area once occupied entirely by the expansive E.D. Morgan estate. E.D. Morgan was the 21st Governor of New York from 1859 through 1862, and he headed the military department as major general of volunteers in 1861 during the Civil War. E.D. 28 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Morgan also served as chairman of the Republican National Committee, from 1856 to 1864, and then again from 1872 to 1876. Truly, E.D. Morgan was a rock star in his time. This beautiful residence on Clock Tower Lane is built around the original chapel that Mr. Morgan built so he could have private church services on his estate. The chapel is an architectural design by the historically famous Stanford White, and the house still has the chapel’s original steeple, white limestone floors, and the original, antique stained glass windows created by the renowned fine artist, John LaFarge. The stained glass windows create a beautiful aura of amber afternoon light in the chapel room. In 1998, architect Alan Cooper designed this home with modern amenities, while keeping the historical integrity. The home has 5 bedrooms, 4 ½ baths and the chapel is the centerpiece of the house. The chapel currently serves as the living room with high cathedral ceilings and a hand-carved marble fireplace. The choir loft in the chapel above the living room is used as a fabulous media room. The large center entry-hall features dark wood floors that continue through most of the first floor of this home. French doors open to a wrap-around terrace, and an attached artist’s studio, overlooking the swimming pool. I imagine the studio could also serve as a cabana.

The chef’s kitchen is truly impressive with state-of-the-art appliances, a wonderful butcher block island with seating, windowed cabinets, and a pantry with a wine refrigerator. There is a lovely sun porch just off the kitchen that overlooks the putting green and the kitchen has a wonderful window over the sink that provides beautiful light in this culinary space that intrinsically flows. I can feel the comfort of this kitchen for laughter and conversation in communal gatherings. I can envision the ease of movement in preparation of a feast. On the second floor, the center hall elegantly overlooks the first floor foyer, creating space and breath for natural light. The cozy master suite has a vaulted ceiling with exposed timbers and a tile fireplace with a wood mantle. Double doors open onto a private balcony with winter water views. There is also a wall of windows for garden viewing and natural light exposure. The house sits on the original underground tunnels that were used to pass from building to building on the expansive historic Morgan estate, and today, in the basement tunnel, there is a 1200 bottle climate-controlled brick wine cellar with a terracotta floor and a gorgeous wood door, along with an acoustically engineered music room, as well as a workout room. Another point worth noting about 45 Clock Tower Lane is that the detached two car garage has power lines to charge two electric cars. This modern

amenity was constructed by using a portion of one of the remaining walls from the original Clock Tower, which once housed the estate’s water supply till it was destroyed by the 1938 hurricane. IN THE HAMPTONS North Of The Highway Is Cool

By Gary DePersia | Photos Courtesy of Gary DePersia/The Corcoran Group In the Hamptons, a new real estate trend is emerging -- buying North of the Highway. Those savvy enough to pioneer the changing landscape of the Hamptons, have discovered how cool it is north of Montauk Highway aka Route 27. Prominent people from all walks of life are opting out of ocean-side living for the open fields, wooded seclusion, golf courses and broad bay fronts that define parts north. Mr. Margaritaville, The Piano Man, Sir Paul and the Material Girl call it home. Media darlings Matt Lauer, Christie Brinkley and Alec Baldwin live here too. Even Mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg hang their hats well north of 27. 30 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

For years, one of the primary reasons to buy here was it was simply less expensive. South of the Highway, a new build on one-acre runs around $8 million. On two acres, an estate with tennis is just under $15 million. North, similar options from Southampton to Bridgehampton range from $4 million to $10 million. But also look at these numbers . . . $36 million on Ferry Road, $20 million on Day Lily Lane, $12.5 million on Cedar Street and $9.75 million on Sag Harbor’s Main Street. They are my own northern trades that have broken sales records over the last decade.

Ready to set a new benchmark at $23.5 million in Sag Harbor is 48 Madison Street. A former 19th century church, it is being renovated into a modern 13,000-square-foot home rising up to 50-feet, where a fourth-story bell tower will allow for harbor and North Fork views. In one area gaining new prominence, Water Mill North, along the farm fields of Deerfield Road, a newly constructed 7,000-square-foot 7-bedroom residence is $6.495 million. Sat on 2-acres, it looks west over a contiguous 32-acre reserve. In Bridgehampton horse country, a 3,200-square-foot farmhouse is $2.495 million. Built for entertaining inside and out, it is set on one-acre with a pool framed by gardens, specimen trees and perennial plantings accessed by winding stone walkways.

Buyers with resources to purchase wherever they want are opting for special properties in unique locations. Buyers unconcerned with driving to the ocean beach will find superlative values. Buyers won’t find anything like it on the other side of 27. Gary DePersia is a Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with The Corcoran Group in the Hamptons. On the East End since 1995, he has participated in more than $1.5 billion of real estate transactions from Southampton to Montauk and from Sagaponack to Shelter Island. myhamptonhomes.com November 2015 | 31

THE WONDER ON WEST 17TH STREET Wonder Works Construction Corp. Creates Dream Mansion in Chelsea

A

By Christopher A. Pape

fter New York development and construction company Wonder Works Construction Corporation bought a four-story townhouse at 357 West 17th Street for $9.35 million from famed designer Karim Rashid, plans are well underway to transform the space into a new paradigm of luxury. The 25-foot wide property is undergoing a gut renovation and build-out that will turn it into an approximately 12,000-squarefoot, five-story, single-family mansion.

In addition to the glamorous renovation, the mansion’s location in the heart of Chelsea is a key factor driving its projected value north of $30 million upon completion. The surrounding blocks are home to hospitality hot spots Dream Downtown, The Maritime Hotel, and Tao Downtown. The Meatpacking location borders the High Line, is across the street from Chelsea Market and only a few blocks from what will become Bourdain Market, Anthony Bourdain’s 100,000-square-foot food emporium on Pier 57.

With interiors by world-renowned designer Andres Escobar, the mansion will feature 12-foot ceilings, a glass elevator, grand entry, large dining room, full-floor master suite, four more bedrooms, and eight bathrooms. Amenities will include a library, home theater, wine cellar, gym, pool, spa, and two-car garage.

“A private home like this is totally unexpected in the middle of Meatpacking and Chelsea,” opined Wonder Works Chairman Joseph Klaynberg. “But the area has a unique vitality, accessible to club scenes and fine dining, and an off the radar element of side street privacy. It offers something for everyone, whether celebrity or banker.”

When completed in spring 2016, it will have an Italianate glass and masonry façade designed by Lisa Chow of Workshop Design & Architecture, as well as a landscaped roof deck and three terraces.

The mansion is the latest in a long line of stunning luxury projects all over New York City for Wonder Works. They are the builders of Williamsburg condominium Oosten, where the penthouse sold for a borough recordsetting $6.49 million. Their own development projects include such luxury condominiums as District, Chelsea Club, and 540West.

“For many, a mansion in the middle of Manhattan eclipses a condominium in One57 or Cast Iron House,” said Eric Brody, COO/Partner of Wonder Works. “We bought this property because of its incredible potential, which it has already exceeded at every stage of the construction and design.” 32 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

THE HIGH LIFE ON THE NORTH FORK Living Luxuriously on the Island By Steven Dubb | Photos Courtesy of Beechwood Homes Have you been to the North Fork? As a born and bred Long Islander, even I continue to be struck by its beauty. There are tremendous views of farm fields, golf courses, the Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound. As a builder and developer, following in the footsteps of my father who started our company 30 years ago, I want to enhance, not to change, an area’s character. Beechwood Homes is best known for luxury lifestyle communities. Our favorite projects are where a piece of land is underutilized and we can repurpose it as newly sought after residences. Our goal is to design high-quality homes for the way sophisticated buyers want to live and entertain today. We had just done that with Bishops Pond Southampton Village, the first luxury condominiums of their kind in the Hamptons, when looking for our next project. The Highlands Club was a fit. Located at the gateway to North Fork Wine Country, in Aquebogue and Riverhead, we purchased 26 lots to complete two enclaves of elegant new homes with breathtaking farm, pond and golf course views. We created 3-4 bedroom homes with 2,300-3,600 square feet of living space on one and two levels starting at $499,900. 34 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Each has a luxurious ground floor master suite, spacious family room, nine-foot ceilings, gourmet kitchen, two-car garage and full basement. All have access to a private clubhouse with fitness center, outdoor pool, sun deck and tennis courts. Lawn care, snow removal and refuse collection are integral. Owners from New York City to the South Fork appreciate the peaceful beauty surrounding their new homes whether they serve as a primary or second residence. What surprises them is how easy it is to get here and how much there is to do year-round. It’s a short and scenic drive to vineyards, farm stands, golf courses, shops and casino ferry hops. Our next project, Country Pointe Ridge, is just west of Riverhead and south of Route 25A at the gateway to the Pine Barrens. Similar to the Highlands, buyers will find state-of-the-art home designs and quality construction in an evergreen setting. It’s truly beautiful on this part of Long Island. Who wouldn’t want to wake up every morning here? Steven Dubb is a principal of The Beechwood Organization, Long Island’s leading homebuilder and developer of luxury lifestyle communities. He oversees The Highlands Clubs on the North Fork and Bishops Pond Southampton Village. Country Pointe Ridge is one of his next projects. beechwoodhomes.com

A FIREPLACE IN EVERY HOME! Port Washington-Based MSM Interiors

F

By Christopher A. Pape

rom haute to humble, MSM Interiors is lighting up some of the swankiest residences in Long Island, Manhattan and beyond with its designs of vent-free, code compliant working Founder Annette Jaffe decorative fireplaces. By implementing systems that use non-combustible metal boxes for the housing and gel cartridges for truly realistic flames, MSM Principal Annette Jaffe has been able to provide these universally-desirable design accents in prewar and postwar condo and co-op residences, single-family homes, rentals and community rooms in apartment buildings. “Fireplaces give an organic energy to a room, whether it’s in a traditional or ultra-modern setting,” said Jaffe. “The systems that we have been using are extremely versatile and with the right cabinet, will add a wow-factor to the design of any room.” Port Washington-based MSM Interiors has been working with local manufacturer Hearth Cabinet for several years for the vent-free decorative fireplaces, which especially work well in apartments. For one Manhattan pied-a-terre on the Upper East Side, Jaffe custom-designed a wood cabinet and finished it to look like cold rolled steel. She then placed it at floor level under a massive television that had been visually overpowering the room. The dramatic element provided an exciting focal point while masking the dark blank space of the TV screen and additionally created two distinct seating areas. 36 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com 38

The owners of a condominium residence in North Hills, who had been displaced from their beloved Long Beach home by Hurricane Sandy, longed for their beach views and fireplace. To provide a cozier setting evoking some of the elements they missed the most, Jaffe and her team created a two-sided fireplace that could be seen from the entry, large living room and kitchen great room. They also added a waterfall fountain on the way down the hallway, so the elements her clients missed most were available all year round. Added Ms. Jaffe, “The beauty of the product we use is its adaptability in a wide range of decors. And since we design the cabinets and frames for each individual space in advance, installation is often completed within a few hours.” In the residents’ lounge/library of a luxury rental in the Philadelphia area, MSM team added a prominent polished chrome wall unit that tied together two bookshelves and reinforced the sophisticated character of the room. A rarely used amenity became a warm meeting place. “People are always looking to be warmed,” Jaffe opined. “We have found ways of providing this warmth without the hassle and expense of building a chimney, hiring a mason or knocking down walls. And it’s code compliant!”

MOCOMANTO A Southampton Gem

I

By Missy Rinfret Minicucci

was lucky enough to visit an amazing, historic home in Southampton this weekend that Denise (The Rinfret Group) decorated this summer in conjunction with RK Development (the best builders in Southampton). I hadn't seen the house since the beginning of the project and really didn't know much about the house until today. After learning the property was called, "Mocomanto," I knew there had to be some interesting stories involved with a name like that, but didn't expect what I found out.

who was said to be dating Lee Radziwill. He made a name for himself in Southampton when after a fight with Ms. Radziwill he put a dead shark in her swimming pool. She retaliated by driving his porsche into Mocomanto's pool!! I mean, I don't know about you, but Lee Radziwill is one of my idols. Her style, grace and whole persona is something I always admired. Hearing that she was part of the home's history was very cool for me and Denise. What a story!

Mocomanto is located on Lake Agawan which is a picturesque spot that couldn't be more perfect. It is a historic home built in 1882 with original Tiffany & Co. windows in its understated foyer. Its original inhabitants, The Bettses owned a public bathing club which eventually became the very private Southampton Bathing Corp. Another owner, Sydney B. Woods, was the youngest player to win Wimbelton at 19! There are many stories about this classic house, but my favorite has to do with the owner Mr. Tufu

The new owner is equally as cool and the house really epitomizes that. His motorcycle is always parked out front, multiple surf boards line the pool house and a personalized corn hole game and fully stocked bar is always on hand. The house is closed for the season, but we are sure many fun times will be had from here on out. Hopefully without any more shark incidents.

UPDATING AN OUTDATED BATHROOM Making a Small Space Seem Larger

I

By Jody Sokol

received a call one night from one of my clients who told me she had good news and bad news. The good news was she bought a condo and was very excited about it. The bad news was that the bathroom was stuck in an 80s time warp and needed to be gutted immediately. Not only was it outdated but had those awful pink and white tiles. It also had a tub/shower combo as well as a narrow entryway into the bathroom. In short, it was just plain awful and had seen better days. My client told me she would pretty much go along with whatever I thought would look good. The only exception was no bathtub. That worked for me. How many people really use their bathtub anyway? It’s great when you have small kids or when you have the occasional aches and pains but do you really use your tub? I was happy to oblige. My client also asked if she could have a low threshold shower base so she didn’t have to step over anything getting into the shower. I loved the low threshold base and thought it looked really slick.

42 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

The bathroom was small and I wanted to keep it light and airy. We found a beautiful plum, tan, brown and mother of pearl tile that we thought would make a pretty border around the shower and this tile was our jumping off point for the rest of the bathroom. A cream vanity with drawers and under sink pull outs looked great with the tile. A neutral beige porcelain tile looked great with the vanity. We both loved the look of the oversized medicine cabinet and the extra storage was a plus. Who doesn’t love a little extra storage here and there? We selected a hand held shower head which my client loves. We took away part of the wall to enlarge the entryway into the bathroom creating a much more spacious space and painted the walls a soft taupe. A vibrant floral roman shade brings the right amount of punch to the space while the fixture adds a nice element of old world glamour. I would say that my client is beyond thrilled with the final outcome and that makes me very happy!

STEPHEN FANUKA The Million Dollar Contractor ZEN AND THE ART OF HOME IMPROVEMENT

H

By Christopher A. Pape | Photos by Deborah Feingold

ome: (noun) the sacred space where we feel safe and at ease, where we gather with family, friends and the ones we love. It is where we rest, sleep and recharge our batteries and where we live our private lives.

In the New York area, Stephen Fanuka is the man to whom the top architects, the most brilliant interior designers and their high-society clients turn to when they want to expand, modernize or update their million-dollar homes. Only perfection is good enough for Stephen and his “Titans” at Fanuka, Inc., and though he may have to rip your home asunder, he will reassemble it into a magnificent whole. The job will be done perfectly and on schedule. “My crew and I are all very aware that we are working in people’s homes, our clients’ private spaces. It’s personal. We respect that.” These old-school qualities have earned Stephen an unsurpassed reputation

in high-quality contracting and luxury interior renovations. So great is his following that it led to the reality TV show Million Dollar Contractor. Stephen explains: “There were many shows on the air about interior decorating, but none of them showed the actual work, the nuts and bolts how things get done and what goes into it. I thought that it would be so interesting to show that, and to highlight all the crafts and trades that make it possible. I wanted to inspire general contractors and the trades. It’s a tough job and many go under.” Obviously Stephen was right, because Million Dollar Contractor is currently in its fifth season on DIY network and syndicated worldwide in 27 countries as far away as Italy, Japan, Brazil, New Zealand and South Africa. Just recently a general contractor from Brazil flew into New York expressly to meet with Stephen. “He told me I had inspired him. That made me very happy, because that is what I set out to do. I am a strong believer in paying back and paying forward.” November 2015 | 47

This replica house was built by my staff (one that we worked on) as a gift to the homeowners in Manhasset NY.

“If you love what you do you don’t work a day in your life.” Somehow Stephen also found the time to co-author a book with New York Times’ writer Edward Lewine called What’s a Homeowner To Do? 442 Things You Should Know, that will soon be going into its second printing. “I wrote this book in simple layman’s terms. It’s good for all homeowners, because it explains all the things that everyone should know about their home: How to maintain it, what you could possibly do yourself and how, and when to hire a professional.” Stephen is a second-generation master cabinet maker. His

father, Rod Fanuka emigrated to New York from Croatia. He had the good fortune that his superior skills and work ethic were soon recognized and sought out by the decorating luminaries of the time, like Pamela Banker who was running Parish-Hadley, and Elizabeth C. Draper, one of the grande dames of 20th-century decorating. The latter even commissioned Ron to build a patio for the White House while Lyndon B. Johnson was president. Ron’s reputation as a cabinet maker and millworker grew year after year, and he soon became the first choice for all highsociety clients in and around New York. November 2015 | 49

From the age of seven Stephen followed his father around everywhere. He watched him work in the shop, and he accompanied him on installations in the mansions of the rich and famous. He was only twelve years old, when his father finally conceded to let Stephen become his apprentice. However, to Stephen’s great frustration, all he was allowed to do was to find all the rusty old nails in the shop and hammer them straight. Finally, after one seemingly endless year, Ron turned to his exasperated son and said: “Okay, now, hammer the nail into the wood.” The overjoyed son did, but to his great dismay he bent the nail that had taken him such a long time to straighten. “This is your first lesson,” said his unperturbed father, “respect all your materials, even the tiniest nail that only cost a penny. Do everything properly from the start, and do not waste anything.” By the age of 17, when Stephen was a junior in high school, he was and a master cabinet maker. After college, Stephen worked for an advertising agency for a couple of years, but when he could not make ends meet, he returned to his dad’s shop to work as an installer. One of the companies that the Fanuka’s had worked with for years was owned by a painter called Leo Shosha. This master tradesman urged Stephen to get his contracting license. Stephen remembers: “He saw something special in me. He thought that I had what it takes to do big things, amazing things.” Leo persuaded Stephen to get his general contracting license and got him his first job: for a member of the Marcos family from the Philippines.

“They wanted someone green, a newcomer who would bend over backwards to get the job done, and that was me, and that is what I did.” More jobs followed, and Fanuka, Inc. went from a one-man operation out of his third bedroom with a 1,600-square-foot shop, to a 10,000-squarefoot facility, 50 full-time employees and 300 affiliated trades. With clients like Beyoncé, Bruce Willis, Tina Faye, Chris Rock, hedge-fund millionaires, politicians and other influential individuals, success could easily go to one’s head, but Stephen is such an amazingly well-grounded man, it has not changed him in the least. If anything, it has made him more humble and thankful. “I am nothing without my team, my “Titans.” They will do anything for me and I will do anything for them. Our work has to be perfect and it has to be done on schedule. Failure is not in our vocabulary.” Stephen relishes a challenge, and working for the very rich, is just that, because they often want the seemingly impossible. “I love figuring out how to build something that has never been done before. I love seeing it come together and then seeing the faces of the clients. It makes it all worth it.” Stephen laughs: “I love what I do! Every day I wake up like it’s Christmas morning and the presents are waiting downstairs to be opened up. If you love what you do you don’t work a day in your life.” stephenfanuka.com

DR. CHRISTOPHER CALAPAI Stem Cell Guru

By Bennett Marcus | Photos by Camarena Eligible Bachelor List Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O., a board certified family practitioner with specialties in anti-aging medicine and nutritional guidance, is a man of many interests. For over 25 years he has hosted a radio show in New York ; he currently hosts two weekly call-in shows on WABC-AM, offering health and medical advice. In his off hours, Dr. Calapai, who is single, is something of a swashbuckler: piloting planes, practicing full-contact karate with other black belts, boating (he’s a member of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club), or taking racecar-driving lessons. At home, when he’s not playing with his 150-lb. German shepherd, Maximus, he enjoys entertaining; his specialty is leg of lamb, based on a family recipe his mother taught him. Dr. Calapai also makes homemade wine; he actually sent some to the former Pope, Benedict XVI, who wrote a note of thanks for “the delicious wine”. In 1995, the New York Post named Dr. Calapai one of the ten most eligible bachelors suitable to escort a separated Princess Diana on her trip to New York. Celebrity Clients He has offices in Manhattan and Long Island, and has consulted with a number of high-profile individuals, including Chris Noth; Mike Tyson; Mickey Rourke; Steven Seagal; Donal Logue, of Fox’s hit series Gotham; and actress and model Anastasia Garvey, whom he advises on nutrition for health and beauty enhancement. Dr. Calapai was also a medical consultant for the New York Rangers hockey team. A leader in stem cell therapy: But most importantly, Dr. Calapai has become a leader in the use of stem cell therapy in the United States, participating in clinical trials to treat a host of disorders. In 2015, the New York Daily News referred to him as “The Stem Cell Guru.” Stem cell therapy has proven beneficial in treating a range of chronic conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, erectile dysfunction, arthritis, joint pain, stroke, heart and kidney failure, COPD, MS, and lupus. Dr. Calapai is ushering in a new era of stem cell therapy in the United States. November 2015 | 59

Stem cell therapy explained: Stem cell therapy is a technique in which certain cells taken from your body fat are extracted and injected into tissues or the bloodstream, and these cells create healing for growth and repair of your body. The cells used in the therapy don’t have any “identity” or “blueprint.” “When your eye, say, makes new cells, they can only be eye cells. Your hair or heart cells can only divide into the realm of the same cell,” Dr. Calapai explains. “There is a special type of cell that exists in your fat and your bone marrow that can be used to go anywhere and take on the identity of anything else.”

Treating joint pain with stem cell therapy: For joint pain, from sports injuries or arthritis, stem cells are injected directly into the affected joint, the shoulder or the knee for instance, and they begin to repair damaged ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. The new cells will continue to divide, which helps the healing along.

Stem cells aid in anti-aging medicine: Dr. Calapai is board certified in anti-aging medicine, which constitutes a large part of his practice. His approach is a comprehensive medical and nutritional plan involving vitamins, minerals, diet, and exercise. Anti-aging medicine involves taking steps to get the body functioning at the level that it did years before by raising vitamin and mineral levels, which decreases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other conditions. “If we can get your hormone levels where they were ten to fifteen years ago, like thyroid DHEA and testosterone, your body will feel and function as it did,” Dr. Calapai reports. “We’re not going to make you live to age 150, but we can get you to function at far greater levels. We’ve reversed type-2 diabetes in people,” he added. The use of stem cells fits into anti-aging treatment because when injected, they go to wherever there is damage or degeneration. They seek out the body’s distress signals, Dr. Calapai says. “So if the pancreas is damaged, stem cells can get to the pancreas because of those distress signals, take on the identity of pancreatic cells, make more pancreatic cells that make insulin, and now the diabetic will make insulin again, and then their sugar comes down. And combine that with the exercise, vitamins, minerals, and hormones and you’ve reversed a very damaging process.”

25A True story: Stem-cell therapy dramatically benefited an Alzheimer’s patient: This patient, in her 80s, was withdrawn, didn’t talk much, and couldn’t name the day or month. Her son and daughter-in-law requested Dr. Calapai to implement stem cell therapy, and the results shocked them. On their drive home that same day, the woman talked in the car, all the way. They went to a restaurant, and she was able to speak to the waitress, order her food, and eat with a fork and knife. “She hadn’t done that in five years,” Dr. Calapai says. The family reported that the woman was also able to clean herself more easily, so her health aide didn’t have to do everything for her when taking a shower. She was more interested in watching TV and looking at magazines. “Her brain function was stimulated,” he adds. During follow-up examinations, the doctor joked with her, and she laughed in response. “She went from being completely nonfunctional to being able to function.” There was one drawback, however, to the amazing improvement in this patient’s condition. “When I first married her son, she was the motherin-law from hell,” the daughter-in-law confided to Dr. Calapai. “Then she developed Alzheimer’s and became withdrawn. Now, she’s going back to being the mother-in-law from hell again,” the woman joked. The patient’s personality was coming back thanks to the treatment. Comprehensive medical and nutritional evaluation, with vitamin blood test: Dr. Calapai created a comprehensive technique to evaluate all underlying causes of a patient’s medical problems. “This is the ultimate holistic approach,” he said. It includes a physical and a series of tests, including a blood test to evaluate the body’s vitamin, mineral, and hormone levels. “We go over that and determine what you should or should not eat, what exercises to do, what vitamins to take, so it’s based upon your body’s specific requirements,” he explains. “With this thorough evaluation, we take steps to start correcting things.” This method, he pointed out, contrasts with the traditional medical approach of treating symptoms. Every single patient he’s ever seen requests the vitamin blood test.

62 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

True story: Comprehensive medical/nutritional approach helped a young woman battling obesity: The 19-year-old patient was 5’10”, weighed over 200 lbs., and was anxious and depressed. Her blood tests revealed a thyroid problem, which required treatment. Dr. Calapai asked her to follow a low-carb diet, and to do some walking every day, even just around the block, and to gradually increase that until she was getting 30 to 45 minutes of exercise. The exercise, paired with the thyroid medication, he said, flooded her cells with oxygen, vitamins, and minerals, and she started to feel more energy. “The anxiety and depression started to go away because her thyroids came up,” he recalls. “She was losing weight, and she was thrilled. So this girl who was a wallflower was now breaking out of her shell.” After about four months, the patient got her weight down to 140, and she is now a certified personal trainer. “She’s taken it to completely the next level,” Dr.Calapai adds. “The girl went from feeling miserable to feeling ecstatic. That kind of transformation can occur if you look at all the right things.” A people person: Dr. Calapai has continued to host his radio shows for almost three decades simply because he finds it gratifying to help listeners learn how to better deal with medical issues. The radio shows, seeing patients, twice-weekly flying lessons, weekly karate sessions, sailing, his racecar training course in New Orleans (which he learned about from two friends involved in that world), entertaining at home - all of these varied activities have one thing in common. “I love to meet people,” Dr. Calapai says. “Whether it’s going out to dinner with friends, or seeing patients, it’s just fun for me to meet people and learn about them, what they’re about. You can learn something new from everybody.” Princess Diana And that 1995 newspaper article naming him a perfect match for Princess Di came as a total surprise. He never did get to meet the beloved royal, but people teased him about it endlessly. “Everybody, for five years, teased me about it,” Dr. Calapai says, smiling at the memory. “Every patient came in asking about it, asking what she is like, for years. It was pretty incredible.”

Dr. Calapai met with Elegant Affairs CEO, Andrea Correale, and after comprehensive blood testing sat down to discuss next steps. He explained that she should exercise for a half hour everyday, whether it be walking, biking or jogging. She was told to follow a low carb diet and recommended that she eat organic smaller portions every three – four hours. End result, Andrea lost 35 pounds.

SONJA MORGAN Designing Woman

By Bennett Marcus | Photos by Camarena Styling by Montgomery Frazier

W

ith her debut collection under her belt, and new pieces soon to arrive, Sonja Morgan is learning about the fashion business. Her first taste of the fashion world was in the 80s when she studied Fashion Marketing at FIT and went on to work in various capacities of the industry. From wholesale to retail to restaurant design, her marketing prowess was applied to many facets of the retail industry, however she found that designing and production was another story. Though her first collection just debuted this past February during Fashion Week, this has been a labor of love and a learning experience that has been in the works for several years. The first collection, which she showed during February Fashion Week, was limited in size. “They call it a ‘capsule collection,‘ which I didn’t even know,” Morgan says, although the range is fairly broad, with swimwear, jewelry, ready-to-wear, sportswear and evening gowns. A gold-hued overlay full-length gown priced at over $1,200 sold out, and

she can’t get more of the fabric. “It upsets me, but we’re learning. We have to learn to only buy fabrics that are going to be available.” The clothing is made in New York City, but the fabrics come from Italy. The dress also sold out in red, a color that is still available, so she will continue to stock that version. Ms. Morgan considers her shade of red to be season-less. Sonja’s biggest design inspirations have been Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Roberto Cavalli and Valentino, which reflects her design aesthetic - classic silhouettes that accent a woman’s figure empowering her along with a healthy dosage of leopard thrown in the mix. Her line is designed for versatility and can be worn year-round. “It’s tropical wool for any climate, for any time of the year, and travels well in your suitcase,” Morgan explained. “So I can do certain styles over and over, in new fabrics like Ralph Lauren does, who is one my idols.” She admires Lauren’s marketing genius in creating a lifestyle brand. “That’s what I aim to do, maybe have a small piece of that market,” she says.

Samples from the new collection are due to arrive shortly, and Morgan expects to place them in a few select retail outlets, down the road. Until now, the line has been sold online, and she says it has gone surprisingly well. Swimwear is a standout. “I photographed my daughter in a bikini, and myself as well, and I just put it out there, and it sold out that day,” she says. “I can’t believe how powerful the Internet is. I also sold a $10,000 diamond tennis bracelet set in white gold right from the start to someone I haven’t even met. It really tells me that my brand has credibility. I have friends that are buying upscale jewelry pieces that I have known for decades, but this surprised me. My new problem is to come up with new one of kind pieces. Which is fun.” Sonja’s Classic jewelry line ranges from $1500 to $200,000 with statement pieces of precious stones set in white, pink and yellow gold settings. While her Timeless jewelry line features investment pieces are sterling silver with diamonds that are approachably priced between $175-$395. Trying to find the sweet spot in the lucrative 24-36 year old consumer demographic, her designs are classic with a sexy twist. She adds “It really inspires me to offer something to everyone that can be considered a long term investment piece and women will keep in their wardrobe for years to come. Sonja Morgan New York is a heritage brand; my daughter even wears it!” 66 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

For now, Morgan will proceed carefully in the business. “Let’s take baby steps, I don't want to take any more chances than I have to,” she says. “You know, fashion is already risky; I’m taking it slow. I heard Victoria Beckman sold her line online for years before selling in stores. I want to make sure when I decide on which stores to sell to that I have a cohesive plan that matches my long term vision.” Though she’s taking her success in stride, Sonja Morgan has grand plans for her various lines she wants to eventually open stores in the major US markets such as Los Angeles, New York and Chicago before heading south and eventually going international with stores in Dubai and London. In addition to her burgeoning business, and her daughter, who is 15 years old, Morgan is passionate about her charitable work, involving animal welfare, the arts, children’s welfare, and LGBT rights. Sonja recently hosted a screening of SIR IVAN: I Am Peaceman to kick off Sir Ivan’s transgender and anti-bullying event for The Trevor Project, whom she supported for a long time. “It’s a lot of fun, I enjoy it,” Morgan says. “And it keeps me grounded. Because people think I’ve gone through a tragic thing with my divorce, and then my movie deal that went down, but I look at it the other way. I produced one great movie, with an Oscar winner; I’m doing really well on the Real Housewives of New York City, if you can believe that. It’s not an easy feat,” she laughs.

FOUR CUTS STEAKHOUSE Slices Through the Competition By W. A. Muller

fter leading the kitchen at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse, Chef Christopher Miller is launching Four Cuts Steakhouse.

A Brooklyn native, Chef Miller has over 20 years of experience. Upon receiving his culinary degree from the University of Washington, Chef Miller took his first positions at Mortimer’s and Ben Benson’s Steakhouse. After working in those esteemed restaurants, he became the Executive Chef of Bobby Van’s, a position he held for over 13 years where he developed a reputation in New York as the “steak whisperer.” Four Cuts, named after the four traditional cuts of steak – the ribeye, the strip, the tenderloin and the t-bone – will offer diners traditional steakhouse cuisine in an intimate setting. The operation of the restaurant will be led by its General Manager Rodolphe Siffredi, who most recently worked as a steakhouse consultant for both Desmond’s Steakhouse and Parca Prime Steakhouse. Four Cuts’ space in the Sutton Place neighborhood, was completely redesigned by C3D Architecture, which set out to create a unique look for the Four Cuts space by combining the sleek look of modern design with rustic elements associated with traditional steakhouses to create an elegant, welcoming dining room. In addition, Marlaina Deppe of Novo Arts has provided a special wall garden, which has been installed on the columns in the main dining room. Working side-by-side with Chef Miller will be Sous Chef Joaquin Linares, formerly of Wolfgang’s Steakhouse and Benjamin Steakhouse. BLACK BARN The New American

W

By Hillary Latos

hat was formerly the home of the beloved SD26 has been completely transformed to reflect the bucolic farms of the Hamptons, hence its name, Black Barn. Designed by Mark Zeff who is known for his farm inspired spaces in the Hamptons, this concept has been in the works for a long time. Former executive chef of the Waldorf Astoria, John Doherty has had his eyes set on this Madison Park space since it came up on the market. Making the farm to table concept a reality this soaring multi level space no longer reflects the minimalist Italian aesthetic of its former life. To warm the cavernous space Zeff used exposed reclaimed wood walls and cement pillars, soft vintage pendant lighting and a giant wooden rafter set in the middle give a sort of industrial farm feel. To set the stage, the restaurant opens with a fall inspired tavern in the front adorned with rakes and buckets filled with New England’s favorite fall provisions like pumpkins and apples. For real foodies, Chef Doherty is opening up a chef’s tasting table with 5 seasonally based courses that change weekly. The wine heritage associated with this address continues with a massive wine cellar stocking over 1000 bottles with a private dining room for 32 people. Doherty’s specialty is artisanal cuisine with a contemporary American touch. Start with the Maine lobster salad spiced with a piquant Thai curry dressing and sweetened with mango or delve in to the rich bone marrow with Manila

Pan seared diver sea scallops are accompanied with caviar and sunchokes, while the striped bass has a crisped skin with flaky tender meat on the inside. All of the meats are sourced locally along the East coast with choices such as a grilled Angus Rib eye, Vermont Shivanne baby goat, succulent porchetta paired with broccoli rabe, or the comfort oriented BBQ beef ribs with a tangy orange chipotle rub. The curried cauliflower steak features a cilantro raita to cool the strong flavors, butternut ravioli has a smoky accent with swiss chard and bacon, the heirloom beets are a sweet accent to the smoked scamorza risotto and the carrots escabeche melts in your mouth with burrata and purslane. With all of the luxury highrises in the area, investment banks, and Silicon Alley neighbors, Madison Park has become one of Manhattan’s hottest dining destinations with this newest hotspot adding to the sizzle.

KAT & THEO

A Worthy Addition to the Flatiron District

F

By Hillary Latos

latiron’s newest high profile addition is Kat & Theo which evokes the cool industrial vibe of the area with its tin ceilings, reclaimed wood walls and cool steel furnishings. This is the first venture of Executive Chef Paras Shah, who has culled an array of experience from working with some of the most famous restaurants worldwide including Ferran Adria’s elBulli, Per Se, and Momofuku Noodle Bar. Kat and Theo is lovingly named after the parents of co-owner, Andreas Typaldo, whose vision along with Shah was to serve contemporary American fare with local seasonal ingredients infused with a Mediterranean influence. Adding to the mix is Aquavit alum Stephen An who curated the wine selections, a bespoke cocktail program created by Michael Timmons from the Lambs Club and desserts from pastry chef Serena Chow formerly from Eleven Madison Park and Pearl and Ash. Reflecting the heritage of the Old World and journey from the Greek Island of Lefkada, rustic touches are seen throughout the décor. Antique mirrors along with exposed brick walls give the airy space warmth and depth against minimalist banquettes, burnished brass tables, and soft pendant lighting. Taking cues from Shah’s stint at elBulli, every dish is plated in a clean yet artistic composition. Start with the fresh crudo ranging from mackerel with black garlic, scallop with tomato chili water, prawns with heirloom tomato, and lobster balanced with the fresh flavors of grapefruit and salty fingers. Mediterranean tapas style small plates have vibrant pairings such as the carpaccio with caper berries and boqueron tonnato, white garlic soup

with pickled melon and surryano ham, razor clams with charred leek, and charred octopus with bean puree and orange. Delicate seafood dishes are prepared to perfection such as the pan seared skate with corn chowder and pickled beet and halibut with fennel and saffron broth. An embodiment of the bountiful Eastern fall harvest are the meat provisions such as the Berkshire pork loin with kohlrabi and mustard, lamb shank with fig smoked lamb belly and roasted vegetables, and duck accented with the sweetness of peach and foie torchon. Make sure to leave room for the rich desserts such as the chocolate accented with lavender and thyme, cheesecake with berries, maple, and chestnut with a graham crust, and carrot cake with pistachio, white chocolate and espresso. To enhance the varied flavors of the cuisine the bespoke cocktails reflect a creative twist on old world classics. Try the fragrant coco rosie with a cardamom infused Rittenhouse rye with rum, black currant liqueur, coconut syrup and rose water. Or try the potent Via Maris Milk punch with whiskey, battavia, pineapple, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, almond and bergamot which will warm the soul on a winter’s night.

I

t’s that time of year when everyone starts thinking about the holidays – not only getting together with family and friends, but also the meals you’re going to have to cook! With Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas, New Years, and more around the corner, it’s inevitable that potatoes are going to make their way onto your menu. As one of the most versatile vegetables out there, it’s a great addition to any holiday menu. The potato is actually the most eaten vegetable in America, and there are plenty to choose from. There are more than 100 varieties of potatoes available, so no matter what dish you’re preparing, there’s a potato to go with it. From a health standpoint, potatoes often get a bad rap. They’re considered a white, starchy food, so many people assume that they’re nutritionally empty. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Potatoes are packed with nutrients, such as vitamin B1, B6, and C, and it’s one of the richest sources of potassium and copper. Studies even show that potatoes can lower blood pressure.

Another potato myth is that all of the nutrients are in the skin, but that’s not true. While the skin has the majority of fiber in it, the vitamins and minerals are in the fleshy part. It’s time to embrace the potato as a healthy staple in your diet. I mentioned earlier that there are more than 100 varieties of potatoes available. Some are better for baking, others are better for boiling and roasting, while some types are more conducive to dishes like salads or soups. Regardless of your holiday menu plans, there is a potato for you. The new potato is a potato that’s been picked before it has fully matured. This means it is lower in starch and high in water content. The new potato has a thin skin which means you can leave the skin on them when you eat it. These potatoes are great when boiled roasted, or in soups or salads. Another popular potato is a Russet or Idaho potato, which are essentially the same. The only difference i s Russet potatoes can come from other parts of the U.S., while Idaho potatoes only come from their namesake state. These potatoes are larger in size and thicker skinned, and are also higher in starch and lower in moisture content. Their composition allows them to absorb ingredients like milk or butter very well, making them great

for mashing and baking. If you’re making gnocchi or dumplings, these potatoes are perfect. Yukon golds are famous for their yellow hue and have a very rich flavor, as well. Keep in mind that these are a bit starchier, making them great for mashes, boiling, and adding to soups. Fingerling potatoes are an elongated variety of potato, perfect for roasting or pureeing. While they have a familiar taste, their shape makes them seem a bit more exotic, which is why I enjoy using them in my dishes. If you enjoy roasted potatoes, try using fingerling potatoes the next time to impress your guests. If you want to get a bit more exotic, bring some purple potatoes into your kitchen. They’re a beautiful color and delicious. I love to serve them mashed or roasted. The rich color definitely brings a wow factor to your dining room table. No matter what you’re serving up for the holidays, it’s definitely worth adding some potatoes to your menu. Not only are they a staple this time of year, but they’re also nutritious and extremely versatile. November 2015 | 87

SCORE POINTS FOR YOUR WAISTLINE Eat Healthfully to Lose Weight

all weekends belong to football spectating and outdoor eating in the form of tailgating. While rooting for your favorite team and having fun with family and friends, it is not necessary that you completely overhaul your healthy lifestyle. You can keep your celebratory traditions alive while modifying your recipes so that they are more heart-healthy and waist-friendly. Score big points for your waistline with these lightened versions of classic tailgating recipes: Southwestern Layered Bean Dip Modified from eatingwell.com Ingredients: 16 oz can nonfat refried beans 15 oz can black beans, rinsed 4 scallions, sliced ½ cup salsa ½ tsp cumin ½ tsp chili powder ¼ cup jalapeno slices, chopped ½ cup low-fat Mexican cheese blend, shredded

½ cup plain non-fat Greek yogurt 1 ½ cups chopped romaine lettuce 1 medium tomato, chopped 1 medium avocado, chopped ¼ cup sliced black olives Directions: 1) Combine refried beans, black beans, scallions, salsa, cumin, chili powder and jalapenos in a medium bowl. 2) Transfer to a shallow 2-qt microwave-safe dish; sprinkle with cheese. 3) Microwave on high until the cheese is melted and the beans are hot, 3 to 5 minutes. 4) Spread the plain Greek yogurt evenly over the hot bean mixture, and then scatter with lettuce, tomato, avocado and olives. *Dietitian’s Tip: Using non-fat (or even low-fat) plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream is a great way to reduce fat and increase protein within a dish. Serve this dish alongside some raw vegetable slices and whole grain baked tortilla chips for dipping.

Buffalo Chicken Meatballs Modified from eatingwell.com Ingredients: 8 oz mushrooms, chopped 1 small onion, chopped 1 stalk celery, sliced 4 cloves garlic 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil ½ cup whole wheat breadcrumbs ½ cup carrot, grated ¼ cup crumbled blue cheese 2 Tbsp hot sauce (like Frank’s Red Hot) 1 Tbsp distilled white vinegar ½ tsp salt ½ tsp ground pepper 1 pound lean ground chicken Directions: 1) In a food processor, finely chop mushrooms, onion, celery and garlic. 2) Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. 3) Add the vegetable mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has evaporated, 6 to 8 minutes. 4) Transfer to a large bowl and let cool for 10 minutes 5) Preheat oven to 450 degrees. 6) Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil and coat with cooking spray. 7) Add breadcrumbs, carrot, cheese, hot sauce, vinegar, salt and pepper to the cooled vegetables; stir until combined. 8) Add chicken and mix gently to combine (do not over mix. Form into 30 meatballs and place on the prepared baking sheet. 9) Bake the meatballs until cooked, about 15 minutes. *Dietitian’s Tip: This is a great alternative to traditional fried buffalo chicken wings. Using a lean ground chicken will slash the dietary fat significantly, while still tasting great! Low-Fat Baked Jalapeño Poppers Modified from skinnytaste.com Ingredients: 12 jalapeño peppers, sliced in half lengthwise 4.5 oz light cream cheese 5 medium scallions, green part only, sliced 2 oz low fat sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (about ¼ cup) ½ cup egg beaters or egg whites, beaten ½ cup panko crumbs 1/8 tsp paprika 1/8 tsp garlic powder 1/8 tsp chili powder 1/8 tsp salt 1/8 tsp fresh pepper Spray oil Directions: 1) Preheat oven to 350°. Wearing rubber gloves, cut peppers in half length-

wise and scoop out the seeds and membrane. 2) Combine cream cheese, cheddar cheese and scallions in a medium bowl. 3) Combine panko, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper in another bowl. Set aside. 4) Fill peppers with cheese filling with a small spoon or spatula. 5) Dip peppers in egg beaters. 6) Place pepper in panko mixture, using a spoon to make sure all the seasoning doesn't fall to the bottom of the bowl. 7) Spray a baking pan with oil spray. 8) Bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes, until golden and cheese oozes out. 9) Remove from oven and serve immediately. Serve hot. *Dietitian’s Tip: Unlike traditional jalapeno poppers, these are baked (not fried). The low-fat cheese and variety of spices will make you forget you are eating something healthy! Broccoli and Cheddar Stuffed Potato Skins Modified from skinnytaste.com Ingredients: 2 medium russet potatoes, scrubbed clean and dry Spray oil Salt and pepper 2 oz Cabot's 75% Light Vermont Cheddar, shredded 1 cup cooked broccoli florets, chopped Directions: 1) Pierce potatoes with a fork a few times all around. 2) Place potatoes in microwave and cook about 5 minutes per potato. When finished, allow to cool enough to handle. 3) Cut potatoes in half horizontally. Scoop out potatoes leaving about 1/4 inch thick wall. Discard the scooped portion. 4) Heat oven to 450°. 5) Lightly spray potato skins on both sides with oil. Season both sides with salt and pepper. 6) Fill potato boats with cheese and broccoli, then place on a broiler pan and bake 10 minutes or until cheese is melted. *Dietitian’s Tip: The skin of the potato is where the dietary fiber is found. By discarding the starchy inside of the potato, you are reducing the overall carbohydrate count and loading up on more fiber (broccoli) and protein (low-fat cheese). CORINTHIA HOTEL LONDON Flying High in England By Victoria R. Crosby | Photo Courtesy of Corinthia Hotels

T

here are many luxury hotels for travelers to choose from, when visiting London, but on my last visit I stayed at the Corinthia Hotel London, which is not only centrally located in Whitehall Place, but also the choice of many celebrities who can stay anywhere. The hotel has received many awards every year including from Conde Nast and Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice awards , and this October won AA Inspector’s Choice and Red Star Award for 2015-16. The Corinthia is in walking distance to the tube, the River Thames, and Trafalgar Square, and was originally the Hotel Metropole, a building which was once used by the Ministry of Defense and was the headquarters of MI9, during the war. It is just around the corner from the old Scotland Yard building, where you would almost expect James Bond to appear on the street. My suite was sumptuous, with all the amenities one would expect in a top rated hotel, and even had a television in the bathtub, so I could soak and watch, no detail was overlooked. ESPA Life at Corinthia, opened in April, 2011, and is a top award winning spa which covers more than four floors and has a swimming pool, sauna 90 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

and steam room, as well as many other health and beauty amenities for both women and men. I enjoyed a relaxing and rejuvenating facial, then had my hair done at the Daniel Galvin salon, before attending a party at Kensington Palace., which was also attended by American designer Tommy Hilfiger and his wife, Dee Ocleppo-Hilfiger, who were guests at the Corinthia. (See the September issue of 25A). The staff were all very attentive and helpful, even providing a big umbrella at the first hint of rain. As you enter The Lobby Lounge of the Corinthia Hotel your breath is taken away by the by the beauty and size of the huge chandelier, which has one thousand white crystal lights, and one red one, the signature of Baccarat. Here guests can enjoy afternoon tea, or a cocktail and discreetly people watch. My niece, Clare, who lives in London, met me for lunch several times in the Garden Lounge, an outdoor oasis of greenery. Dining in the Italian Restaurant, Massimo, or the English restaurant Northall, or enjoying drinks and music at the Bassoon Bar, all are memorable experiences. There is also a small Harrods gift shop for souvenirs and gift purchases.

There are always beautiful floral arrangements in the restaurants and lounges, artistically designed to compliment the dĂŠcor. There are elegant rooms for private parties and a large ballroom where weddings and other special events take place. The hotel has 294 rooms, including 40 suites and 7 penthouses, which were all occupied except for one, which I was able to tour with one of the staff members, and I was told that the penthouse suites are very popular with Hollywood celebrities. The penthouse that I visited was a beautiful duplex with a marble staircase, illuminated under each step, and a magnificent entry chandelier, which resembles the branches of a tree covered in ice from a winter storm. The rooftop terrace has a gas lit fireplace and a hot tub, with panoramic views of London. Each penthouse has a name and this was called The Hamilton Penthouse. I had hoped to run into Johnny Depp, who is rumored to stay in the hotel when in London, but no such luck, maybe next visit. One of Corinthia London's exclusive partnerships is with the Goodwood Estate in Chichester, West Sussex. Corinthia can arrange for their guests to enjoy car racing, golf outings and flying experiences at Goodwood. I was the first journalist from the US to participate in this special partnership. A car and driver took me from the Corinthia through the countryside to the Goodwood Estate, where I had a delicious lunch at The Kennels, overlooking

the golf course. This is a restaurant where guests may bring their dogs, who sat with them at lunch. If you are an animal lover, this is a fun experience to dine where dogs are welcomed. From the Kennels I was driven a short distance to the Goodwood Flying School, where I was given an exciting lesson in flying a Cessna. I have never thought about earning a pilot’s license, but Joe, the instructor said I was a natural. We flew over Goodwood, the stately home of the Duke of Richmond, and the car race track, the horse track, and then to Portsmouth over the harbor, and along the coastline. It was a beautiful clear day, so we could also see the Isle of Wight. Every September they hold the Goodwood Revival of the era of the motor circuit between 1948 and 1966. Guests dress in period costume as they celebrate the motor racing of that time. These are just a few of the many unique experiences Corinthia can arrange for guests. The Corinthia Hotels are part of the Pisani family's five star Collection of Hotels, the London Corinthia is their flagship hotel. corninthia.com/london

Lynmar Estate During Fall Season

LYNMAR ESTATE & VINEYARD Beauty in Sonoma, California By Joe Alexander Quail Hill Ranch Nestled in the heart of the Russian River Valley lies the picturesque Lynmar Estate, the pride and joy of Lynn Fritz, the proprietor of this iconic vineyard. A San Francisco native, Lynn first purchased Quail Hill Ranch in 1980, drawn to the breezy seafaring climate and the sheer beauty of the plunging vineyards. Originally a home away from home, it was a place he frequented throughout his life to reconnect with loved ones. “I used to visit Russian River as a child because it was a very big place for families to visit before the days of fancy country clubs,” Lynn says. “The grapes do so well because the maritime influence is perfect for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. I love the area and I was so happy to find something where part of it was already planted.” With each further time he returned to Lynmar, he planted new trees and bushes, slowly transforming the location from a pasture to a vineyard with verdant gardens and indigenous flowers and trees. Russian River Valley With vines over 40 years old, Lynmar’s state-of-the-art, gravity flow winery and caves allows for a pristine wine making environment, ensuring that their wines always meet the ultra-premium standards that the fortunate people on their subscribers list know to expect. “I’ve always loved Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They are the best and most food-friendly wines,” 96 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

reveals Fritz. “Many people were scared to plant this close to the ocean until the Russian River was discovered. After growing grapes, which were sold to exclusive wineries for the next 15 years, it was clear that our vineyard could grow some of the best wines in the world.” With that certainty Lynn built his own winery in 1994, and over the next 15 years steadily purchased six adjacent properties that he incorporated into the vineyard, to create what is now the 100-acre Lynmar Estate. “I waited 15 years to see how good this site really was. “It’s like discovering you have a child prodigy,” he says with a laugh. “I knew I would have to spend the rest of my days seeing that it reached its potential because I recognized what rare good fortune I had been blessed with.” Fritz Institute Lynn’s career shifted when he founded Fritz Institute with his wife Dr. Anisya Fritz in 2001, a group dedicated to assisting humanitarian organizations with the complicated logistics of global disaster relief. He simultaneously oversaw the meticulous planting and re-planting of a number of areas within the vineyard, which gave fruit to a magnificent array of distinct clonal selections of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. He also took the helm of building a buoyant, welcoming tasting room in addition to the winery and caves, both finished in 2005. Fritz admits, “Every year we can marginally improve everything we do because we control it all.”

Vineyard View for Estate’s Bliss House Adam Fritz Stomping Grapes

Laguna de Santa Rosa In 2008, Lynn and his wife Anisya decided to make Lynmar Estate their permanent home, took over day-to-day management, and became the property's resident landowners. Through their tender attention, the expansive grounds don’t only boast rolling vineyards, but also a colorful collection of organic vegetables, beneficial borders and frontage on the Laguna de Santa Rosa. The gardens reflect the abundance of Sonoma County, as the vegetation and herbs are used by Executive Chef David Frakes. The gorgeous borders that surround the vineyards attract beneficial insects and hummingbirds, providing a natural barrier from pests. The foliage and flora is primarily supervised by Anisya’s caring eye. Pinot & Pizza "The primordial pull of wine is its relationship with food, so food had to be part of the equation,” Lynn explains. “It's the ultimate acid test, literally and figuratively." In July and August, Lynmar offers a Picnic Pairing for guests, a favorite seasonal offering where you can partake in a fresh farm-to-table lunch with a special pairing of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Some of the summery selections to be sampled include their harvest salad, mixed greens with Persian cucumber and heirloom tomatoes all picked right from the grounds, and their gourmet grilled local chicken breast sandwich on Village

Bakery focaccia, cheddar and a blackberry-chive aioli. For something a little more substantial, head over to the beautiful Redwood Grove for the Pinot & Pizza pairing menu featuring pizza made in on-site ovens fired with Pinot Noir-ingrained oak barrel staves inoculated with Chardonnay yeast and an innovative selection of their award-winning red wines. Lynn & Anisya The beauty and richness found at Lynmar Estate is unlike any other that can be found within the wine country of California. After a long career traveling the globe, Lynn and Anisya have truly come home. The unique community experience found at Lynmar when paired with their high quality wine, food and friends serves as a perfect backdrop to adequately absorb all that this breathtaking venue has to offer. The complex components of Lynn's vision of a new artisan winery model are coupled together in a magical harmony and serve as a testament to the prodigy that is Quail Hill Vineyard. Lynn proudly says, “The wines speak for themselves, but in the words of the consumers that were able to get on their subscribers list, “they are the best of the best.”

“HOME, HOME ON THE RANCH” Home Ranch in Colorado Offers Unique Country Living

T

By Norah Bradford

he Home Ranch, located some four hours driving time north-west from Denver in Clark, Colorado or a short ride from the airport at nearby Steamboat Springs is well-known for its unique vacation environment. Guests typically spend a week in their own cabin, or one of the few rooms in the main ranch house, share “haute mountain cuisine” meals together, and in between participate in a range of seasonal outdoor activities, – all with tuition and support to ensure both safety and full enjoyment.

The vision of the owners, Ann and Steve Stranahan, led them to acquire neighboring ranches as they became available, in order to protect this uniquely beautiful agricultural valley. Their property now encompasses 4,000 acres, bordered on the East by the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area, and The Home Ranch, and to the North by the Elk River. To the West lies the 2,100 acre Murphy-Larsen Ranch, which opens to the vast Sand Mountain Wilderness. It is here that they have realized an opportunity for a dozen families to acquire land in a carefully conserved community.

98 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

"A community in which ranching, recreational, and preservation interests work together to protect and enrich the great agricultural heritage and landscapes of the American West."

The Murphy-Larsen Ranch is a unique tract of land, rising from lush hay meadows to mountain ridges with spectacular views of the Continental Divide. The name is derived from an Irish immigrant, Owen Murphy, who homesteaded the property in the late 19th century. His daughter Johanna Larsen is laid to rest in the local cemetery.

The lots of land in Murphy Larsen Ranch have been painstakingly designed to ensure privacy and that the homes are in harmony with the land. Each parcel is, in effect, a lot within a lot – some 2.5 acres of buildable space inside some 50 acres of land with a maximum above ground size of 5,000 square feet. Additional guidelines are in place to ensure that building materials, lighting and other features are all consistent with the land, to aesthetically please not just the new owner but also their neighbors. murphy-larsen.com November 2015 | 99

NEW YORK ART, ANTIQUE & JEWELRY SHOW Park Avenue Armory: Open November 21st – 24th By Bennett Marcus Design Chairs The Design Chairs of this year’s New York Art, Antique & Jewelry show, which opens on November 21st and runs through November 24th, are Campion Platt and Elle Cullman. The committee includes illustrious interior designers Tony Ingrao, Randy Kemper, Lisa Jackson, Alex Papachristidis, Jennifer Post and Philip Gorrivan. Sirio Maccioni’s Le Cirque will once again provide the catering from three on-site options, a bistro, a grab-and-go spot, and a coffee bar. The Palm Beach Show Group Scott Diament, whose company, Palm Beach Show Group, runs the New York show, expects it to be a stellar year. “I would say we have amassed one of the best dealer participation lists of any show anywhere,” he said. “For us it’s very exciting to steward the progression of the show, and to put that on the doorstep of, arguably, the best building in America, and in one of the greatest collecting areas on the planet Earth,” he added. For a 104 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

display at the front of the show, Diament selected a piece from U.K. based Wick, a rotating wooden display case, open on four sides, an American piece believed to have been in the Philadelphia Exposition of 1876, that will hold a unique items. Palm Beach Show Group is one of the world’s preeminent production companies with eleven important shows annually including Baltimore, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, and New York, which they took over two years ago from its previous operator. Diament, a certified gemologist with a string of jewelry stores, founded the Palm Beach Show Group after exhibiting at shows in Europe and noting the contrast with those in the United States. “They cared about the carpet, they cared about the flowers,” he said. When he heard that there were plans to build the Palm Beach Convention Center, he and his partners decided to secure Presidents’ Day Weekend and bring in a European style fair. The first fair took place in 2004 with 230 dealers from around the world, and at that time became the largest art, antique and jewelry show in U.S. history, and remains so today.

Scott Diament The gentleman who runs all of these shows is not immune to collecting. “I literally have a thousand items,” Diament says. “At every show I go to, I end up buying something. I almost have some kind of problem.” A recent favorite is a MB&F watch with the works on the front of the watch, in sapphire and reddish gold with dual time, which he finds very handy in his line of work. Another is a circa 1970s minimalist desk, of steel and wood with an aeronautical look, that he was sitting at as we spoke by telephone. He owns a Martin-Baker ejection chair that came from a bomber plane, and samurai swords from the year 1480. “The list goes on and on,” he says. “My tastes are eclectic.” Antiquer Bill Rau Among the wares antique dealer M.S. Rau will offer at the upcoming New York Art, Antique and Jewelry Show opening on are Pope Paul VI’s diamond cross and ring valued at $1.9 million; a rare 10-carat blue diamond, an18carat jasmine sapphire; a painting by Van Gogh; and the Twinight Porcelain Collection, that has been displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bill Rau is the third generation of his family to run the renowned 103-year-old New Orleans-based dealership, and over the years has become one of the foremost experts on European & American antiques, fine art, & jewelry. He is a member of the Wedgewood Society, the American Cut Glass Association, the National Association Of Watch & Clock collectors, and the Music Box Society; hence the wide array of treasures he deals in.

Fine Jewelry & Old Master Paintings “I have theory that I believe to be true that the rules for all collectibles only vary by 25 - 30%, so if you love 19th Century paintings and are an expert in that and you want to learn about Old Master paintings, I think what you have to learn is only about 15%, because 85% of those rules are the same,” Rau modestly explains of how he became knowledgeable in so many niche collectibles categories. “If you’re an expert in painting, and you want to learn about jewelry, that might be the biggest difference, that might be 30% different rules, but the majority of the rules are going to be the same,” he says. Those general rules: is the piece in good condition, is it rare, is it unique, does it come with papers, does the origin matter, is it signed? “Those rules are going to be the same whether you’re talking about jewelry or paintings, and then, obviously, you have to learn the 30% different rules,” Rau says. “I was blessed, obviously, because I grew up in the business, so I learned a number of things very early,” he adds. Eighty Exhibitors Other exhibitors at this year’s show at the Park Avenue Armory include Fitzgerald Fine Arts; Georg Jensen; Berko Fine Paintings from Belgium; Suzanne Syz, from Switzerland; Veronique Bamps out of Monaco; and London dealers Wick Antiques. Others among the 80 dealers are Richard Green Gallery, Butchoff Antiques and Jonathan Cooper. nyfallshow.com November 2015 | 105

OSCAR GENERALE King of Product Placement

T

By W.A. Muller

he Italian daily newspaper “ SOLE 24 ORE” nicknamed Oscar Generale “Manager of the Stars” or "King of the Product Placement." What name better fits the man that provides International Celebrities to the most important brands in the world or that can do the most important product placement operations in the movie industry? Oscar. Obviously. His name is a destiny.

the most important product placement operations in the advertisement and movie industries as: John Travolta, Julia Roberts, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Dustin Hoffman, George Clooney, Bruce Willis, Al Pacino. Celebrities that become testimonials of the “Made in Italy” and not only, the realm of luxury items, becoming the symbol of big companies such as Gianfranco Ferre’ with Julia Roberts.

WM: I understand that you are the “Product Placement King” in the entertainment industry. Can you tell me about your involvement with product placement? OG: I suggest products and the celebrities wear or use them. Being worldrenowned icons, celebrities automatically give more prestige and value to the objects that they are encircled within. Celebrities create “tendencies.” The message is direct and powerful. For example, the product placement of Freddy in the movie Fame was a success. Freddy was unknown in the U.S. prior to its product placement in the film. Following my advice and suggestions, a huge product placement deal was negotiated for the movie. Today, the brand is distributing their products in the United States too. All over the world, the name Oscar Generale and A List “Celebrities” are always associated in the same breath.

WM: You are the acknowledged mastermind of your company, but who is your right-hand woman? OG: I have a great partner, Simona Politi. She is my alter ego in everything. We’ve been working together for many, many years now. Ever since I first started doing this job, we have shared together all the big successes. We work a lot, sometimes 18 hours a day! Our mobile phones are always on. We are always available for our clients and celebrities. We both love our job and we’ve never changed our personalities or characters even after all our success.

Oscar is a"Zip Man" being the link between the most important and biggest companies in the world and the Stars of Hollywood, providing International A-list Celebrities to the most famous and important brands in the world finalizing 106 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

I just want to thank all my staff because they are so important as they help us day in and day out, selecting projects and screenplays. I receive a minimum of 100 per month. They also help me follow up with all the product placement I have to do for movies, magazines, and TV shows. Oscar Generale Productions, INC. 310.657.4485
