Publisher’s Note

It may be October, but it’s still hot! Well, at least the pages of 25A are! October is our Fall Fashion Issue and I couldn’t be prouder of the way the book reads and looks. What a perfect way to conquer New York City than to produce the most beautiful magazine we’ve ever put together! On our cover is the glamorous, gorgeous, talented and hard working, Dita von Teese. We are thrilled and over-the-moon to feature the “Queen of Burlesque.” We spoke to her in Australia, where she was walking the runway for the brand, Wheels and Babydoll. She collaborates with Melanie Greensmith, designer and founder of the brand, to produce beautiful clothing for the everyday woman. In this issue, we feature an exclusive fashion shoot at the NOMO SOHO Hotel on Crosby Street in Manhattan (thank you to them for letting us use their space), a roundup of New York Fasion Week looks, an interview with Lubov Azria, creative director of BCBG, and much more! We think you’ll love all the fashion we showcase and hope that you use us as your guide to great fall looks. As always, we feature beloved local author, Monica Randall who writes about Rosemary Farms and the Haunted Druid Ruins on the Gold Coast. What a perfectly scary story for Halloween! In addition, we have the best in restaurants and travel destinations profiled. We are blessed to have excellent writers and loyal readers. Wishing you a wonderful October.

LJ Cross

Designer Lisa Jackson By Isaiah Negron Holiday Shopping With the holiday shopping season kicking into high gear jewelry designer Lisa Jackson has launched a curated collection of clothing including wool capes and scarves for fall and winter. In addition to new fine jewelry, clutches and totes there is also resort wear and household items including LJ Cross handblown glasses and vases. Jackson’s brand is founded on luxe femininity, informal elegance and soft modernism. Fellow designers and long Islanders Tory Burch and Vera Wang as well as Renee Zellweger and Michael J. Fox have all turned to Lisa Jackson for her modern design aesthetic and to create beauty in their lives. Although Jackson’s flagship shop is at 994 Madison Avenue at 77th Street, this past summer, she opened a pop up boutique in Sag Harbor at JANGEORGe at 11 Madison Street. In September, Christie Brinkley hit her Madison Avenue shop and bought an Arts and Science dress, Yummi jacket, an LJ Cross cashmere scarf and Lola hat.

Diamonds for the Beach. Jackson has had a long string of successes, beginning her career as a private Art and Antiques Consultant, traveling the world in search of exceptional art and rare antiques before entering the world of interior design. “It started when I was randomly asked if I could design an apartment. I always had a creative side so I said, ‘Sure!’ and, honestly, the guy was too cute to refuse!” she laughs. In 2014, Jackson took a step in a new direction and launched LJ Cross, a fashion-forward line of fine jewelry and signature crosses featuring innovative designs and gemstones. Jackson utilized her signature minimalist style and 28 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

eclectic design sense to create bold statements and unique looks for each piece. “For me, the cross is a spiritual symbol. It has nothing to do with religion,” she explains. “I made the line to be feminine, chic, dramatic and filled with must-have items.” Among her newest creations are selections of pieces dubbed “Diamonds for the Beach.” These include the Cobblestone Collection and the Stevies, named after her late brother Steven, who was the inspiration for LJ Cross. Each piece exudes a laid back luxury, such as her stunning gold Cobblestone Ring with over four carats of diamonds. “Design is a process. We started with this large moonstone cross that I knew was the first and the last. Then we moved onto diamonds. Much more girly and cool,” Lisa remembers. “Now I really feel we have signature looks that LJ Cross really owns. I’m very proud of that.” Blue Haven Although she is a lifelong Long Islander, who lives in a landmarked house in Southampton called Blue Haven, Jackson owes much of her inspiration to living in NYC. “I’m a minimalist at heart and growing up in Manhattan exposed me to all kinds of architecture and design,” Jackson explains. “I’ve always been drawn to simplicity and feel very comfortable in my point of view.” Her visual talent has allowed her to branch out in many ways, but Jackson says she is nowhere near finished, and is ready to build LJ Cross into an international luxury lifestyle brand. Her one of a kind looks, which range in price from $100 - $120,000 can be purchased select Sak’s Fifth Avenue locations, luxury independent retailors across the nation, at the LJ Cross flagship in NYC and at ljcrossny.com.

Norwegian Wool Where Fashion Meets Function

W

By Hillary Latos

hile it’s inevitable that New York will become a polar vortex in the coming months, men no longer have to sacrifice style for warmth thanks to Norwegian Wool. The brainchild of former Wall Street trader turned designer, Michael Berkowitz, the coats are perfect for those who want stylish options when it comes to winter coats. Faced with the choices of a puffy down coat or a fitted wool cashmere topper, it's a sacrifice to be stylish instead of warm and thus created a stylish yet functional coat to withstand the elements of New York City’s temperamental winter. Thus Norwegian Wool was born. Lined with a specially engineered layer of 90 percent pure white down and 10 percent feathers, Norwegian Wool™ coats are designed for subzero temperatures and feature an ultra-warm Class 1 down fill of >700 per cubic inch. The unique inner membrane that is in between the wool/ cashmere outer layer and the down lining adds a tremendous amount of wind resistance and creates additional warmth on those days with strong wind chills. By applying Norwegian design to fine Italian fabrics with a New York aesthetic the coats have a classic yet modern universal appeal. Norwegian Wool coats also feature high-tech waterproof membranes plus non-corrosive outer coatings to create truly waterproof garments that shield against rain, sleet, and snow. All coats contain seams and pockets properly taped so that moisture is not able to seep into the linings. The side pockets are extra deep and fleece-lined for additional warmth and are carefully placed

32 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

at heights and angles that are comfortable for walking. All of Norwegian Wool™ coats are made from the finest Italian fabrics. Ranging from 100 percent Merino Wool through Cashmere Wool blends, the collection provides the most eye-catching and superior materials. In order to maintain a lean and classic look with maximum warmth, Norwegian Wool coats are adorned with button flaps with rugged Swiss made two way zippers to block out wind yet allow ease of. This allows wearers to zip up from the bottom of the coat when more flexibility is needed for sitting down or for brisk walking, while still shielding cold air and wind. The various styles of coats have been named after locations in Norway: Lyngen: known as the ‘Alps in the Ocean’ is made from 100 percent Italian Merino Wool and, has a modern and natural look. Velmunden: an area known for its deep blue waters and moody black night skies, features classic Navy Blue and Midnight Black coats that are made from Italian cashmere wool blends. Nordlikht: meaning ‘Northern Lights,’ is the most luxurious and expensive style made in Italy from 100 percent Cashmere and features a Rex Rabbit fur trim in the collar for that extra bit of luxury and warmth. Embrace winter this year in style with the warmth of a cozy down parka disguised under a sophisticated stylish topcoat. norwegian-wool.com

BCBGMAXAZRIA Spring 2016 An Ode to California

A

By Hillary Latos

s the first show to kick of New York Fashion Week: The Shows at the Skylight Moynihan Station, Lubov Azria, the creative director of BCBGMAXAZRIA, was all aglow with her Spring 2016 collection. This season she looked to her own backyard of Southern California for inspiration with a 70s vibe. Breezy silhouettes were embellished with Mexican baja inspired embroidery and layered with mixed knit ponchos and elongated sweaters. Long sleeved tie dye shirts were paired with maxi dresses, blouson shifts were accessorized by patchwork bucket hats. It was all about easy styles with a boho luxe twist. Here we caught up with the multi talented and gorgeous Lubov Azria backstage and chatted about her inspiration, collection, and staying relevant as the brand has recently celebrated its 25th birthday. Can you tell me a little bit about your California inspiration for Spring 2016? We are based in LA, so we wanted to go back to our roots. Usually we travel the world like Istanbul, Barcelona, but we did some research on skateboarding on music and art. It was so much fun we had the best time in the world. You can see the influence in the collection as it is really based 34 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

on us. You see how many collections are based in New York or designers take an iconic woman, but this one was on a locale. Who is your woman? Our woman is always in the forefront. She loves fashion and she loves to be seen. When I think of the woman who wears our runway pieces, she doesn’t have a job. She dances and dines and has the best time of her life. How do you keep the line fresh and young and appealing to the next generation? First of all I have five daughters, and I surround myself around people I love and who influence me, we have a great rapport, we exchange ideas and its really about surrounding yourself with people that you think are better than you. Are you doing any branded partnerships? Of course we are, we always have something in the works. bcbg.com

t all began with a dream, a spark and a vision. Ron Cesark, founder of Montauk Tackle Co. clothing, started his company with a simple idea. esigners at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016 produced a range of very pretty soft silhouettes with peek boo cutouts, nods to fashion icons of the past and a convergence of art and fashion. Hair and beauty were effortless, and gowns ranged from sunny jewel tone brights to monochromatic black and white allowing the outfit to make the statement over the accessories. Nods to the '50s ladylike Mad Men era silhouettes and fabrics were shown, as well as, the easy boho luxe style of Baja California and street art found in urban centers. ita von Teese is a bit of an anachronism who has channeled the seductive '40s and '50s screen icon pin up girl with amazing accuracy and is often dubbed the "Queen of Neo Burlesque." Dita has been essential in resurrecting this seductive art of a bygone era. Her signature look has transcended time, while she depicts that cinema noir sense, Old Hollywood duality to embody the sexy glam siren, with the intimidating femme fatale persona, that she finds to be empowering. Here we catch up with Dita von Teese during the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival where she is walking during the closing show for Melaine Greenberg’s vintage inspired Wheels and Babydoll collection. How did your collaboration with Wheels & Babydoll come about? Melaine and I met in 2009, I was in London and she was in the same hotel and she sent over some clothes and I loved the brand and packaging. I wrote her to thank her and thought it would be great to work together and do a cardigan together and it just took off, we’ve already done 20 colors. They’ve become collector’s items and girls stack them and tag me in their Instagram posts and even go on eBay for over $800. What I love about it is that it looks really cute on everyone and we have a full range of sizes to 16 and different ages. My mom wears it also. We did it together and it comes in a French armoire box. What do you think of Australian designers? I’ve worked with some of the good ones like Aurelio Costarella, and collaborated with Toni Maticevski on a small collection of dresses.

Who are some of your favorite designers? I’m wearing a lot of Wheels & Dollbaby, but I have my go to designers that I shop with and the ones I wear on the red carpet which are loaners. I really only shop in the winter and I wore a lot of John Galliano when he was with Dior also a lot of Lanvin. For summer clothes, I wear Wheels & Dollbaby or '50s dresses, and Jean Paul Gualtier, Elie Saab, Zuhad Murad and Jenny Packham for the red carpet. A lot of the designers I wear are people I like as friends and have personal relationships with.

Are you going to Paris Fashion Week? I’m not going until November but I usually go in January for the couture shows. How did your fascination with vintage glamour begin? It started in high school when I didn’t have any money to spend because my parents didn’t buy me designer jeans. So I started to shop at flea markets and buy vintage clothes. I felt like I could emulate certain looks in vintage because it wasn’t as cool back then as it is now. That’s the real reason I started dressing in retro style was that I also felt like the beauty aspects of retro glamour really appealed to me, because red lipstick was only $2 and you can have instant glamour. The era was really about creation and it’s not about how naturally pretty you that era’s about a different level of glamour which I love. I hear you have a glamour floor in your house? I just moved recently. In my other house, I had a whole floor dedicated to my glamour wardrobe. I had one room dedicated to all of my shoes, one room for my hats, one for all of my clothes. I’ve been collecting vintage clothes since the early '90s and I have a lot in my collection including two storage spaces full of vintage clothes, but I look at it as a more of an archive and collection of antique and vintage clothing. So it’s now two rooms and my bedroom is also on the glamour floor.

What are the things you can’t live without when you travel? After the basic things - a great coat because you can look great after coming off the airplane, sunglasses, shoes that are comfortable and glamorous at the same time. I think with these things you are set. Do you have a particular beauty regimen? I have sensitive skin so I see a dermatologist when I have issues and one who isn’t famous with their own line of products. I shun all of that. I go to a serious skin doctor, not someone who has lasers and I know who isn’t going to make me spend $3000 and one who takes insurance. I use Eminence skincare it’s all natural and organic. I read an article that Madonna was using and I’ve seen her in person and whatever she’s using that’s what I want to use. I also do pilates 3-4 times a week.

I’ve always had this obsession with grown up glamour, when I was a little girl all I ever wanted to be was a grown woman. I’ve always wanted to look older and it’s funny when people see me without makeup say to me you look so much younger you should go out like that all the time, but I never wanted to look younger. I’ve always wanted to look like a woman, not a young girl. I think the femme fatale look was always like a woman who had power and control and could be a little bit feared. I was always a little shy in life, I’m a natural blonde from a farming town in Michigan. Having this image I always felt like I was a strong woman not to be messed with, I liked that, but there were moments in my life where it was hard to meet men it was intimidating. I’ve had such a hard time being single, I liked the intimidating factor of the look of the femme fatale but it can backfire as well. I think its empowering to look like the femme fatale but be super nice. What projects are you working on?

Tell me about your new book coming out in December. I wanted to write a book that is my whole philosophy on beauty and glamour, and I felt there wasn’t really a beauty book for people like me that have different references. There are all of these beauty books that tell you how to have tasteful or natural makeup or beauty advice from people who have a glam squad. I do my own hair and makeup and I don’t have a team of people. I wanted to break down what I believe the power of glamour is, what makes us different from each other, beautiful and interesting. It’s full of references that are not the typical American standards of beauty. The way we’ve seen the ideal of beauty change and now women are different, I wanted to write a book about that. How would you recommend that women incorporate glamour into their everyday life? For me I love red lipstick, it’s so simple it gives a bright joyful color. I love makeup in general it’s something you can do everyday and it changes. People can find a signature look whether it’s a thick heavy cateye, red or orange lips, it has to be a signature powerful statement look created by makeup. Your image vacillates between glamour girl and femme fatale, which do you think is more of your personality.

The book is exciting, coming up with new cardigan colors, my lingerie line that I’m continuously working on, and coming up with a few new shows.

Photo: Jessica Eisner

What do you love most about Australia? I think what I love most is that when I come here I feel so embraced. People generally understand what I do and what my glamour mission is. Some places don’t really get it and I feel here they really know me and what I want to do. In the US, they kind of know me but don’t really know what I do. Whereas here they know I have a lingerie collection, I do this show, burlesque is really embraced here. It’s just my perception and most of my collaborations have been here. My lingerie line, dress line, and cardigan line was launched here. It just sort of clicks with me here and they believe in me.

Some of the world’s newest design talent comes from Australia, and Telstra Perth Fashion Festival is a platform for established as well as up and coming Western Australia and international designers to have their collections presented to the world. This season designers such as Dilettente, Empire Rose, Akira, Phuong My, Toni Maticevski, Jamie Lee, Wheels & Dollbaby, Ae’lkemi, as well as winners from the Western Australia Designers Competition showed in a week long festival that celebrated fashion and talent in the beautiful capital city of Perth.

Rosemary Farm

And The Haunted Druid Ruins

W

Story & Photos by Monica Randall

hen I first began photographing the old North Shore estates as a teenager, there were at least 400 of them abandoned and doomed along the shores of the Long Island Sound. Within ten years time, all of them would be gone, except for one, Rosemary Farm. It was impossible to get to and surrounded by almost a thousand acres of land that was owned by the Catholic Church. Perched high on a hill, in Lloyd Harbor it was left to simply molder away on its own, and spared attacks by vandals because no one knew it was there. The rusted vine entangled gates off West Neck road had been chained shut since the twenties. I discovered it by accident while rambling along on horseback one day. It just stood there and seemed to brood, a dark empty ruin- another haunting reminder of a time that would never come again. A faded greeting card found amid the attic clutter bore the ironic legend: “ Here’s Rosemary”, for Remembrance” Over those words and etching of the manor house in is heyday was a painted sprig of the healing herb. Each year hundreds of those cards were sent to friends during the Christmas

holidays. Inside the derelict building vines crept along the floors, reaching in through the broken windows. Black birds rustled in nests they built in the exposed beams and rafters. There was an overpowering smell of arsenic, (perhaps used as rat-poison) that rose up from the underground tunnel that ran from the woods to the basement of the house. Why the tunnel was built remains a mystery. On the main floor an elaborately decorated pipe organ stood silent. Shades of Norma Desmond, in “Sunset Boulevard.” One could almost imagine the Back Fugue’s being played in the mansions early days. All that was missing was the dead monkey lying in the little white coffin and the creepy butler digging a grave nearby, but lets not get carried away. The ceilings seemed on the verge of collapse, and the discolored walls and oak panels were festooned in cobwebs. Despite the arsenic, you could hear the rats or something unseen scuttling about in the walls. In 1902, Roland Conklin, a capitalist, bought some 200 acres in West Neck, Lloyd Harbor, and commissioned architect, Wilson Eyre to build him a great manor house high on a wooded bluff overlooking the Long Island Sound.

Macabre and curious statues rose up in unexpected places

It was unique among North Shore houses with its double gables, overhanging bays, and rich groupings of richly carved windows stained a deep mahogany color. The upper walls were covered with rare shingletype terra-cotta tile. Originally the shutters were painted a deep forest green, but over the years they began to hang at odd angles on rusting hinges. At one time the interiors were among the finest on Long Island, with unusual carvings by Edouard Meane along the main floor gallery. A pair of brooding medieval figures graced the stairway newel posts. Rare old paintings once hung from a carved oak gallery that overlooked the massive living room. In the master suite there were exposed beams with colorful hand painted murals depicting the “Canterbury Tales” and at the far end a centuries-old stained glass window. Looking more like a Hollywood stage set, one entered the dining room through a pair of giant twisted, poly-chromed, Venetian columns carved with fruit, vines and dragons. The dining room chairs were French Medieval church choir stalls. They surrounded a huge round sixteenth century oak table. Conklin, who made and lost several fortunes in utilities, foreign transportation, and sugar, had married the beautiful Mary MacFadden in 1895. Her portrait painted by noted photographer and artist Edward Steichen, just after the estate was built. The gold framed, portrait hung in the oak paneled gallery along with other rare works of art. The Conklin’s lived a charmed life along with their three children who had their own bowling alley on the third floor. When Conklin’s beloved wife died suddenly,

the lights went out in the mansion and the house was closed up forever in 1924. Else where on the gold coast the era was just warming up. Million dollar parties were being hosted for kings, queens and the Prince of Wales, and prohibition was making millionaires out of thugs from the Bronx and Queens. No one cared where the booze came from as long as no party went dry. For winter entertaining Conklin had a huge indoor theater built in the East wing of the house where whole orchestras were brought in to perform their favorite classics. The master of the house was a scholar who spent half the night in his vast Cuban mahogany library reading about the arts, geology, ancient history and its mysterious rituals. Inspired by the architecture of ancient civilizations and the Roman Coliseum, Conklin set out to build a near replica on the North, West end of his property. Little remains of what was regarded as Rosemary Farm’s crowning glory, a spectacular open-air amphitheater laid out in a series of multilevel stonework tiers. It was built to hold five thousand people. In its center at the lowest level, an island rose up from an artificial lake. This in turn was surrounded by, intricate waterfalls, a stone bridge and fossil coral grottoes. The island was used as a stage and was encircled by a steel pipe. When the actors needed a costume change, or the stage set replaced by another, the fountain was turned on and jets of water rose sixteen feet into the air to act as a curtain. Swans and gondolas glided about the island during intermission. October 2015 | 69

Vines engulf all that remains of the Island stage and footbridge

The theater became famous during World War 1, when it was used for a gala fund raising event for the National Red Cross. There was a Shakespeare festival, Greek plays, and entire Broadway shows were brought out to the Long Island site. Theater greats like John and Ethel Barrymore, Tyrone Power, and Clifton Webb performed on that historic stage. Music great John Philip Sousa played his original compositions with his two hundred and fifty piece band. Surrounding this colossal structure are dramatic views of the Long Island Sound, and park like vistas dotted with curious marble mythological creatures, including cloven-hoofed nymphs, Pan, and a statue of Sappho. Here they linger still buried amid the long tendrils of ivy that engulf the ruins today. They creep and stretch down along the rocks and gullies, and along the floor of the now empty pool. Great wooden pillars rise up from the island, while those that have fallen lay in heaps, crushed by falling branches from the ancient trees. A short distance from the house to the East is an imposing and unusual carriage house and barn. A clock tower rises up almost a hundred feet from on side and is dominated by a pair of carved rampant dragons supporting an ancient clock. In 1986, the Hunting Historical Society cleared out the weeds and dead 70 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

trees in the theater for a gala event and recreated some of the theatrical performances once held there. The event was a huge success with thousands attending. Around that time I set out to capture some of the ruins on film. Using some of the rescued costumes from other estates, I experimented with infrared film and a vintage Rolleiflex auto timer to see if any spectral being might show up on film. But all I got were creepy images of myself looking gaunt and pale as ectoplasm. Infrared film turns the skin ashen gray. The Haunted Druid Ruins At the very top of the amphitheater, facing East there is a curious series of ancient stone arches that some refer to as the Druid ruins. No one knows what their exact purpose was, but Conklin was fascinated with ancient history, myths, and pagan rituals, and over the years he collected thousands of stone boulders from ancient ruins on his world travels. Some are millions of years old and alleged to have been transported from Incan, Mayan temples, and the areas around Stonehenge in England. These were incorporated into the design of an arched temple like structure which creates a compelling sight at sunset as the light filters through the trees casting an eerie glow on the

wide stone arches. At the center is what had been a shallow round reflecting pool, surrounded by large flat rocks. Whether the stonework grotto like structure was built for decoration or some other purpose, there are rumors surrounding this most curious of Long Island places, everything from stories about the Indians, who once occupied those lands, to vibrations in the rocks themselves. A strange echo can be heard if you stand in the right spot and call out. One local claimed to hear a chorus of voices commingling with those of the rustling pine trees in the surrounding forest. On rare occasions phantom lights and balls of mist seem to hover about the ruins. Some have even been caught on film. Sounds like the setting for a horror movie, but if this unique and ancient setting was indeed used for pagan rituals, that could have included animal or even human sacrifices, such ominous energies could linger in such a place for a very long time. Science has recently come up with valid reasons for such curious phenomena. It was discovered that stones like granite or marble contain quartz crystal,

silica, and ferric salts, all substances once used in the making of sound recording equipment. It would appear that nature has a way of imprinting or recording every sound that has taken place at a particular site. So if hundreds or thousands of years ago Indians or ancient civilizations played drums or chanted in that spot, even a small amount of electricity in the atmosphere can trigger a replay of those sounds when you least expect it. There’s really nothing scary about it. But I dare you to trudge up to those ruins and spend the night alone during a full moon! There are real bats in those grottos.

Authors note: In the fall of 1990, vandals finally discovered the long abandoned mansion and set fire to it, and it burnt to the ground. The stables, carriage house and Druid ruins survived. Restoring The Victory National Museum of the Royal Navy

T

By Victoria R. Crosby | Photo Courtysey The National Museum of the Royal Navy

his year on my visit to London, I traveled by train to The National Museum of the Royal Navy, at the Naval Base in Portsmouth, Hampshire, about an hour and a half’s journey by train from London. We were met by the fundraising officer, Emma Strong, who I had first met a few months earlier, at the British Consul General’s residence in New York. The museum of the Mary Rose, a ship from the time of King Henry Vlll, which sank in battle in 1545, in front of the King who had dined with the captain on the ship the day before, and was watching the battle from the land. Mary Rose lay in the mud at the bottom of the sea, until the 1960s when SCUBA, (self contained underwater breathing apparatus,) allowed archeologist Margaret Rule to locate the position of the ship. Mary Rose was raised many years later, is now housed in it’s own dome shaped building. Along with the many artifacts recovered from the ship, visitors walk through the museum as though they are actually on the ship. Modern technology has recreated the faces of the sailors who perished, and even of the dog whose skeletal remains were recovered. There is another building which is part of the museum devoted to Admiral 72 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Lord Horatio Nelson, including a life size statue of him and as well as many other interesting historic naval memorabilia, including a statue of his lover Lady Emma Hamilton. They never married, as they were both married to others, but had a child together in 1801, also called Horatio. In addition to the Mary Rose, The Victory is also in the process of being restored. The Victory was Admiral Lord Nelson’s ship, and it is in dry dock right next to the Mary Rose museum. I was fortunate enough to be given a VIP tour of the Victory by the head curator Andrew Baines, a brilliant man with a mind like a walking computer. Andrew told the stories with such detail that I felt as though I was reliving the life of a sailor; how and where they ate, and slept and the conditions of the ordinary sailors and of the officers; the Admiral’s quarters, which for that time were quiet luxurious, and how Nelson was shot and bled to death on the ship. If you are a naval history buff you may know of Nelson from the BBC TV series, or if not, you know of his famous statue at the top of the column in Trafalgar Square in London. Nelson died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and the column was completed in 1843. Nelson lost the sight of his right eye in battle in Corsica, and also lost his right arm in a latter battle at Tenerife.

Nelson in His Cabin

Nelson’s famous command was “England expects every man to do his duty.” He was killed in battle in October, 1805. His body was preserved in brandy and transported back to England, where he was given a state funeral in January, 1806 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Nelson’s battles saved England from being invaded by Napoleon. Now The National Museum of the Royal Navy is raising funds to completely restore the Victory. Many years ago a group was formed, the American Friends of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, AFNMRN, to give Americans the opportunity to be part of the restoration process. In my travels back to England, I have learned that Americans have been very generous and supportive in helping to restore and preserve historic buildings and sites there. The recent book, Nelson’s Victory; 250 Years of War and Peace, by Brian Lavery, is the definitive story of Nelson and The Victory. It has illustrations of wonderful paintings of that era, depicting ships in battle, including some by J. M. Turner and other artists. The American Friends of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, will

hold a Trafalgar Luncheon, A Celebration of the History of British Sea Power, on Thursday October 29 aboard Cunard’s RMS Queen Mary 2, while it is docked in Brooklyn, NY. Cunard is celebrating it’s 175 anniversary, and president of Cunard North America, Richard Meadows, is the co-chair of this major event, with founding president of AFNMRN David W. Fleming and honored guests, Admiral Lord Michael Boyce KG GCB OBE DL* and Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, who is the patron of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, and only daughter of Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll.

The Rinfret Group Defines Luxurious Living

alking into The Rinfret Group design studio late one August afternoon was a breath of fragrant, fresh air. A delicious candle permeated the room, and it was perfect for the late-summer season. Not too much, not too little. Simply, undeniably perfect.

fondly and softly of her wonderful relationship with her father. Her dad passed on recently, and like any loving daughter, she is devastated. Denise keeps a beautiful, timeless black and white photograph of herself with her father, sitting on her desk directly beside her computer screen so her dad is always in her eye’s view.

Meeting Denise Rinfret and Missy Rinfret Minicucci, the creative duo of The Rinfret Group was also a breath of fresh air. Denise, beautiful, blonde, sun-kissed tanned, and the mom of this mother/daughter collaboration, greeted me at her office door with a genuine, welcoming warmth and I immediately felt right at home. Missy, her daughter, gorgeous and blonde, wearing a classic shift the color of a yummy orange popsicle, entered the office from another room, glowing with vivacious energy. It is at once apparent that both these ladies have impeccable style, but what is also so evidently striking is their graceful presence. Denise Rinfret has been designing for twenty-five years. She grew up in Manhattan and attended high school in New York City. Her father took her to art classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and they toured all the museums together as she was growing up. Her cultured childhood influenced her tastes in art and fashion. As we chatted, Denise spoke

Denise Rinfret describes The Rinfret Group style as an elegant and refined look. The lines are clean, with tailored upholstery and classic furniture pieces. Denise has been featured in The New York Times, Newsday, and many publications such as House Beautiful, Traditional Home, Better Homes & Gardens, House and Gardens, and Distinction Magazine, winning the Designer of Distinction Award from the latter publication in both 2000 and 2007. Better Homes & Gardens has referred to Denise Rinfret as a “rising star” and as a “designer worth watching.” She has also contributed to design books Decorating On A Dime and Breaking The Rules. Denise has appeared on Good Morning America and her Hamptons Designer Showcase Kitchen was featured on LNBC’s LX New York. Her kitchen in the Inspired Designs Showcase was featured in November 2009, and Traditional Home Magazine has named the The Rinfret Group as notable designers in 2010, 2012, and 2015.

Missy, who could quite possibly be a Lilly Pulitzer muse, or a J. Crew catalog model, and the other half of the Rinfret design team, describes The Rinfret Group style as traditional with a modern twist and a sense of humor. “We love beautiful, traditional lines and classic decor, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously,” laughs Missy Minicucci. Missy Rinfret Minicucci spent her childhood immersed in the design world. She spent her weekends at design showcase houses and weekdays with her mom, Denise, in New York City at the D&D Building and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her grandfather was an architect and put a pencil in Missy’s hand, teaching her to draw, so it was assumed that Missy would indeed follow her mom’s path in the interior design world. While studying at Fairfield, Missy interned in finance, and worked for a hedge fund in Greenwich. She found herself daydreaming about being in the studio with her mother working on design projects, so she decided to take some time off and help with her mom’s design business. Missy became so passionate about design that she enrolled in New York School of Interior Design and she never looked back. After design school, Missy worked on her own, first with a Manhattan designer, and for the luxury Italian furniture company, B&B Italia, as well as the renowned fabric company, Cowton & Tout. Missy’s influence is

Mario Buatta, and after working in the design world on her own, she feels right at home working with her mother and bringing in young, fun New York City clients. The Rinfret Group has a distinguished list of clientele in Manhattan, Long Island and Connecticut. They have worked with Nancy Shevell, aka Mrs. Paul McCartney, Frank Pellegrino of the famous Manhattan restaurant Rao’s, and they recently did the Manhattan penthouse of shipping executive Doris Ho. Denise and Missy do large-scale projects and they also do design work on studio apartments. Their clients are business executives, notable stars, as well as local neighbors. The Rinfret Group has a modern but classic approach to their work and their rooms are highly identifiable as a Rinfret room. Denise and Missy are currently working on a design project for the Ronald McDonald House. As we discuss the project, both women are animated and excited. “We love doing projects such as this, said Denise, “and we believe in the mission of the Ronald McDonald House.” As Missy shows me the idea board for the project, she speaks sweetly of the creative choices they’ve made for the room. And like everything else about The Rinfret Group, it’s not too much, and it’s undeniably perfect. October 2015 | 77

The Swami Sri Gurudev Comes to America By Joe Alexander

G

urudev now has millions of supporters from over 170 countries who follow his spiritual and life-transforming messages of family, faith and compassion. Real Housewives of New York City stars Sonja Morgan and Dorinda Medley were among the celebrities in the front row to hear spiritual leader Swami Sri Gurudev when he spoke at the Global Dharma Conference at the New Jersey Convention & Exposition Center. Savvy Sonja said, “I’ve always been interested in spirituality. Gurudev is the embodiment of the knowledge accumulated by all the iconic Gurus that have ever lived. He is the divine guru.” Devotee Dorinda said, “I saw Gurudev on his last visit to New York and found him to be an inspirational speaker. He taught me that every human being not only has the power to lift themselves but that we also have the power to lift the collective consciousness of humanity.” Brahmrishi Sri Guruvanandji Swamy, lovingly known to his devoted disciples as Sri Gurudev, says, “Service to Humanity is the best work of life.” The Sacred Journey Born in 1941 in Delhi, India into life-threatening circumstances due to near fatal kidney failure, Gurudev was taken in by a renowned Indian saint, Yogiraj Devraha Baba, who took him to his Ashram to cure his ailment and save his life. The yogi accurately predicted that Gurudev would one day achieve the pinnacle of spirituality and that Gurudev would use his energy to heal and serve humanity. From that time on, Gurudev was bestowed with wisdom by Baba. In addition to his spiritual prowess, Gurudev holds several degrees, including M. Tech. from IIT, Kharagpur, which is the equivalent to MIT and Harvard in the United States, a PhD in Astrology, and a Masters in Sanskrit, Vedas, and Literature. He was also an Honorary Principal and

Professor at Banaras Hindu University. The Root of Mantra After 45 years of preaching love and compassion, combined with his meditation and self-discipline, many of Gurudev’s followers believe he has acquired the divine powers of the ancient sages. This position is attained by very few today and many disciples thought that the time of the sages had disappeared entirely from the modern world. Gurudev now helps hundreds of thousands of people who are in distress. He says, "A little faith will lead you to heaven. Full faith will bring heaven to you." Gurudev has devoted his entire life to helping guide the suffering masses to raise their human consciousness to Divine Consciousness. He has the innate ability to express the teachings of the grand Masters and correlate them with the contemporary lives of his followers. "Be a reason for someone's happiness, not just a part of it," he says. "Be a part of someone's sadness, never a reason for it." The Great Masters of the Past Gurudev wholeheartedly believes that the teachings from the great Masters of the past contain eternal Truth and are still relevant for all ages, people and places to this day. Gurudev has received many honors and awards including the "Personality of Knowledge," which was awarded by the All World Religion Conference, and the "Jyotish Murmagya,” awarded by the German Astrological Society.

Spa Season

Now's the Time to Pamper Yourself

T

By Hillary Latos

hough seasonal changes from summer to fall can take a toll on our skin, rejuvenation and pampering are just a click away. Here are some of fall’s best bets to recharge, refresh, and renew.

One of the most anticipated events of fall is Spa Week held during the week of October 12-18 when some of the most prestigious spas and medi spas across the country offer their top beauty treatments at just a fraction of their cost - most treatments for only $50. Sought after spas such as Kur Skinlab feature their most popular signature treatments such as a 60 minute therapeutic massage (normally $150+) or their 75 minute KUR customized facial with extractions and deep cleanse and ultrasound therapy. These spa week specials also apply to medical treatments such as the Sudatonic body slimming treatment for circumference reduction on hips legs, waist and thighs or the Endermologie treatment for cellulite reduction at the Cellulite Endermologie Center. Just visit spaweek.com to view and book available spa treatments. European skincare specialist Sothys has introduced a new body treatment that combines color therapy and exclusive massage movements that mimic a sculptor’s hand movements to provide an ultra sensory experience. It starts with a body exfoliation scrub followed by a therapeutic massage with a deeply hydrating moisturizer that locates the knots in your body to release tension and ensure total relaxation while leaving the skin supple and smooth. Sothys-usa.com Combining Eastern principles with Western technology, Ling brings relaxation and rejuvenation to a new level with their Deep Sleep Wellness Massage. It 80 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

starts with breathing properly to balance your mind and body followed by a treatment with the Ling Energy Lift Machine that’s applied to your spinal cord to relax your central nerve system through localized heat therapy to relax the mind and body. The machine mimics the feeling of acupuncture to stimulate your meridian channels to increase blood circulation, lymphatic drainage and chi energy flow. After your body is calm and relaxed, a customized massage oil is applied followed by a 35 minute relaxing massage to unlock any areas of tension. Afterwards the Ling Energy Lift Machine is applied to your legs, stomach back to relax the body and restore the mind. If you are pressed for time and need an instant face lift, Ling offers 30 minute lift treatments that will erase years off your visage. This noninvasive procedure is done at their Lift Bar which consists of a customized cocktail of Ling’s signature serums to address your immediate facial needs followed by the Energy Lift Machine that uses infra red technology to push the moisturizers deep into the pores and stimulate healing energy. The result is a lifted and contoured complexion that minimizes fine lines in just 30 minutes. Lingskincare.com Even after Spa Week is over you can still save on same day massages, facials and waxing services with Massage Now, at some of the top salons and day spas in NYC by booking online at massagenow.co or through their app. Users can select what spa and location works best for them along with the description of services, user ratings, type of massage, duration, and gender. Luxury spas that are currently in the network include Oasis Day Spa, Marilyn Monroe Spa, Paul Labrecque Salon & Spa, Clay Spa, Townhouse Spa, and Nuansa Spa.

Break The Fast Healthful Options for Breakfast By Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN I’m sure you’ve heard by now that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Do you know WHY? And do you even LISTEN to this mantra? Week after week I encounter clients who skip this morning meal yet seek guidance for weight management. They explain, “I am too busy,” or “I am not hungry when I first wake up.” Regardless of the excuse, the facts supporting the importance for breakfast are indisputable. Let’s discuss… Eating a healthy breakfast is essential for maintaining energy and attention levels, and even helps to avoid snacking later in the day. According to research, skipping meals, especially breakfast, can make weight management more difficult as well. Researchers have also proven that adults who have a long-term habit of skipping breakfast tend to have higher cholesterol, higher LDL and higher insulin levels- all of which are precursors to heart disease and diabetes. Consuming an early morning meal increases the metabolic rate (in other words, how fast you burn calories) and signals to your body that you are ready to start the day. Those who skip breakfast have a tendency to consume more food than usual the next time they eat and also are 82 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

more likely to snack on high-calorie foods to keep hunger at bay between meals. Clearly, we should all get on the breakfast train! However, it is important to keep in mind that not all breakfasts are created equal. A healthy breakfast should consist of a low-fat protein and a high-fiber carbohydrate. Protein-rich breakfasts help us develop healthy muscle and tissue, while also improving appetite control by reducing cravings and preventing overeating later in the day. Fiber-rich breakfasts, on the other hand, help us stay full and promote a healthy metabolism. Here are some delicious and nutritious examples of breakfasts that are rich in both protein and fiber: 1) Chocolate covered strawberry smoothie Mix 1 cup of low-fat milk (or unsweetened almond milk) with 1 scoop of no sugar added chocolate protein powder (whey protein or pea protein both work), 1 handful of fresh or frozen strawberries and a few ice cubes. Blend until mixed through.

2) Cottage cheese melon bowl Cut a small cantaloupe in half and scoop out the seeds in the center to create a melon bowl. Scoop ½ to ¾ cup low-fat cottage cheese into the “bowl.” Top with a pinch of ground flaxseed for a boost of heart-healthy fat. 3) Mexican-inspired egg white wrap Combine a few scrambled egg whites, ¼ cup black beans, a few tablespoons of salsa, and ½ of a small avocado. Wrap combo in a warm whole grain tortilla. Not a fan of egg whites? 1-2 whole eggs would work too! 4) Egg banana pancakes In a bowl, whisk together 2 eggs and 1 mashed banana. Preheat a skillet, spray with non-stick spray, and pour your batter. Cook silver dollar size pancakes for 30 seconds on each side and serve. 5) Chocolate peanut butter oats Cook ½ cup (uncooked) oatmeal with 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk or low-fat milk. Stir in 1 scoop of chocolate whey protein powder and 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter.

almonds for a lower sugar granola (look for less than 7 grams of sugar per serving). 8) Sweet ricotta pita Toast ½ large or 1 small whole wheat pita. Spread with ¼ cup part-skim ricotta cheese. Drizzle 1 teaspoon of natural honey and cover in ground cinnamon, as desired. 9) AB&B sandwich Lightly toast 2 slices of whole grain or Ezekiel bread. Spread toast with 2 tablespoons of natural (no sugar added) almond butter. Top with ½ of a sliced banana and a sprinkle of chia seeds. 10) On the go? Combine 2 hard-boiled eggs with 1 small piece of fruit for a well-balanced portable breakfast.

6) Egg veggie muffins Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease 8 muffin cups or line with papers. Beat 8 eggs in a large bowl and add chopped veggies of your choice (I like scallions, tomato, mushrooms, and spinach). Pour egg mixture evenly into prepared muffin cups. Bake in the preheated oven until muffins are set in the middle, about 20-25 minutes. 7) Greek yogurt parfait Mix 6 ounces of plain Greek yogurt with 1 cup of mixed berries, 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, and a handful of slivered almonds. 25A Restaurant Roundup T

By Hillary Latos

his month it was all about the diverse flavors of NYC as we ventured in and out of Manhattan to explore the melting pot of flavors and cuisines that comprise the fabric of New York’s culinary scene. From a quaint French wine bar, to New York’s favorite neighborhood spots in Manhattan and beyond there’s something for everyone which is a testament to living in one of the greatest cities in the world. Yorkers can be a hard lot to please, this provocative and interactive dinner performance doesn’t disappoint. Guests are ordered to dress in black tie or cocktail wear to “please the queen” and are seated in large group tables as they embark on this futuristic odyssey that has shades of cirque du Soleil with an undeniably seductive Hunger Games atmosphere. As acrobats whirl past you on stage and twirl from the ceiling above, guests imbibe in free flowing wines and shared medieval styled food served off of swords and spears. Former Le Cirque Executive Chef Greg Lingayahas has created a lavish family style menu that’s “fit for a queen” with items such as a whole roast chicken, Salmon Wellington, or racks of lamb where swapping provisions with other tables is strongly encouraged. Before the queen’s arrival the stainless steel plates, plastic barware and utensils are collected and thrown into large vats creating a dystopian atmosphere with a cacophony of noise as to what’s to come. But we won’t ruin the surprise ending you just have to experience it yourself.

“Just say Yes to everything,” are the Queen’s orders at the Queen of the Night theatrical dinner experience at the Diamond Horseshoe. While New

Charlie Palmer has perfected American cuisine and his latest outpost is his eponymous Charlie Palmer at the Knick, the signature restaurant of Times Square’s most luxurious hotel, The Knickerbocker, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. Palmer’s talent shines through in his classic yet contemporary American dishes such as his Scotch quail eggs with pancetta, miso sea scallops with a corn relish and the signature Knick burger. Awash in a soothing and rich palette of greys and beiges, no expense has been spared in this ultra luxe and seductive setting on the third floor that is the epitome of New York’s power dining scene. Named after the popular Mexican game of chance- similar to American Bingo, that uses traditional Mexican symbols instead of numbers, this kind of eclecticism is reflected in La Loteria’s cuisine that is steeped in tradition yet influenced by things around us. This quaint West Village eatery is the product of chef Julietta Ballesteros of Crema and Los Feliz and Jamie Herrera to create Modern Mexican cuisine that caters to the sophisticated New York City palate. Some of their specialties of the house include the lobster quesadilla, “street” tacos filled with spicy shrimp, ribeye marinated in Michelada, and braised skirt steak cooked in banana leaves with a tequila and beer marinade infused with exotic spices. Not to be missed are the signature margaritas made with a smoky mezcal or aged agave tequila with fresh juices and spicy tajin chile rims.

Spring break just arrived in the heart of Times Square at the sprawling 22,000 square foot nightclub eatery Senor Frogs. The iconic Mexican chain is typically found in warm party towns such as Aruba and Cancun and is known for its festive atmosphere filled with lively entertainment including conga lines, live karaoke onstage and balloon twisted hats. Enjoy generously portioned classic Mexican fare such as guacamole, enchiladas, quesadillas, fajitas, and marinated charbroiled steak that are perfect for sharing. Audience participation is strongly encouraged as you watch your waitstaff take to the stage in between taking and serving orders with oversized mega cocktails served in palm tree shaped hurricane glasses to get the fiesta started. In the dead of winter even a temporary escape to spring break environs will be a welcome respite. Senor Frogs, 11 Times Square, NYC, 212.221.3833 senorfrogs.com The romance of Tuscany comes alive at the rustic and charming wine bar Mulino a Vino in the middle of the Meatpacking district. Owner Paolo Merigalli is an expert Milanese sommelier and has hand picked his curated selection of his favorite hard to find Italian wines. While the wine menu is grouped by flavor profile encompassing reds and whites rather than region, terroir, or grape, you can tell him what your preferences are and he will tailor a tasting for you. The best thing is his preservation method that allows an extensive selection of over 100 wines by the glass including the pricier barbarescos and barolos that are normally sold as entire bottles allowing the optimal pairing of wines to every dish. The Italian fare is meticulously executed by chef Massaimiliano Eandi, who hails from several Michelin starred restaurants who takes a modern and contemporary twist to Italian cuisine with dishes such as the deconstructed tomato pasta served in a carved out tomato. Just as no detail has been spared on the food and wines, the same attention to detail has been applied to the décor with carefully selected Italian antiques, furniture, and tiles that evoke the warm ambiance of that secret trattoria frequented by locals. alloween isn’t the only reason to throw a party in October. For those of you looking to do something other than your typical costume party, it might be time to host your own Oktoberfest celebration. After all, the millions of people who attend the annual Munich celebration of beer and delicious food can’t be wrong! As far as décor goes, Oktoberfest colors are blue and white, which is a great place to start for a decorating scheme. If the weather is nice, you could bring the fun and ambiance of the Munich Oktoberfest tents and canopies to your own backyard, as well. One of the most important parts of Oktoberfest is beer, so why not create a beer garden in your own home? Your local supermarket or beer distributor should be able to give you advice, but be on the lookout for German beers. Ales, lagers, stouts, and porters will make a great beer menu for your guests. If you want to really impress, you can buy beer directly from Munich breweries, such as Hofbrau, Spaten,

and Paulaner, which will ship their beer to you. Use a large blackboard to write down the different beer varieties to give your home an authentic beer garden feel. Remember – proper beer glasses are a must, so stock up on beer steins or other festive mugs. It isn’t Oktoberfest without pretzels! Serve up warm Bavarian pretzels, which you could make yourself or buy pre-made and bake them in your oven. If you don’t have the time, hard pretzel sticks will do in a pinch. What will make these pretzels special are the dipping sauces. Create a Bavarian cheese sauce made with camembert, beer, chives, onions and black pepper. Or, provide a variety of different mustards, such as a spicy beer mustard, or a sweet and spicy mustard, to dip the pretzels in. When it comes to heartier fare, bratwurst is another Oktoberfest staple. You can cook it in the oven or grill it on the barbeque – whatever your preference is – but you must serve it with sauerkraut. You can certainly buy pre-made sauerkraut, or you can get creative in the kitchen and put your own spin on it. Plus, the health benefits from naturally fermented sauerkraut are wonderful, which makes it not only delicious, but nutritious for your guests. Keeping in the spirit of Oktoberfest, you should also add schnitzel to

your menu. If you’re not familiar, schnitzel is a breaded, pan-fried cutlet typically made from pork or veal. You can serve them three different ways: with fresh lemon and parsley, in a rich brown mushroom gravy, or in a white cream sauce. And don’t forget the sides! Serve schnitzel with a German potato salad, fries or a traditional dish called spaetzle. Spaetzle is a German dumpling made with flour, water, and seasoning, and will make your Oktoberfest even more authentic. With all of that savory food, you’re going to need something sweet. A traditional Oktoberfest desert is gingerbread hearts – millions of them are sold every year in Munich. These heart shaped gingerbread cookies are decorated with blue and white icing with fun sayings written on them, typically served on ribbons. These are easy to make at home and a quick Internet search can help inspire you for some decorating ideas. For another dessert option, try making an apple strudel, which is always a favorite. Apples are in season this time of year, so take advantage of this delicious ingredient. While you and your guests might not be able to make it to Munich for this year’s Oktoberfest, there’s no reason why you can’t recreate the festival’s delicious food, beer, and camaraderie in your own home. Cheers! October 2015 | 93

The seared prawns with cream of onion, water licorice and candy Lim贸n is also a dish you will only find at Locanda Don Serafino. Of course to top it all off, every dessert item on the menu is created to Italian perfection.

onte Carlo and the Cote d’Azur have long been associated as a playground for the richest of the rich- attracting a jetset mélange of celebrities, royalty, titans and A-listers where money is no object. Naturally some of the best restaurants in the world are concentrated in this small microcosmic rarefied world of discerning taste. One of the most notable and most romantic hotels in the region is La Chevre d’Or, a member of Relais & Chateaux. Set on the hilltop in the medieval town of Eze, dining here is a sublime and surreal experience. With dramatic views of the Cote d’Azur the dining room faces the promontory of the super exclusive St Jean Cap Ferrat to the east

The medieval stone chateaux was once a bread factory thought to have gold hidden in the walls, hence the name which translates to Golden Goat. Surrounded by a romantic flowering garden filled with topiaries against an breathtaking view you feel like you’ve been transported to another world between the sea and sky where only beauty and elegance exist. To add to this magical setting is their signature 2 star Michelin restaurant considered amongst gourmands to be one of the best restaurants in the world helmed by Ronan Kervarrec. The 9 course inspiration menu is the best way to experience the range of flavors which begins with a colorful bouquet of Bio vegetables followed by razor thin San Remo prawns carpaccio with Sturgeon caviar, porcini tortellini topped with truffle shavings, local roasted mullet, and lamb chops roasted with bacon and Acacia honey. very fairytale has its castle and this magical land wouldn’t be complete without its very own palace. Situated atop a hill overlooking the charming Alpine village of Gstaad, Gstaad Palace offers truly remarkable views of the Saanenland region’s immense natural beauty. Whether in winter with its snow capped mountains or in summer with endless fields of green, Gstaad has a way of freeing your mind and awakening your spirit. Perfectly stated by internationally acclaimed actress Julie Andrews, “Gstaad is the last paradise in a crazy world.” Well-suited to this paradise is the legendary 5-star luxury hotel, Gstaad Palace. Where elegance and refinement meet simplicity and tradition, the Palace recognizes the value in the region’s slogan, “Come up and Slow Down.” Having recently celebrated their 100th year in operation, the team at this third generation family run hotel provides unmatched hospitality and personalized service. Wake up in one of the 104 tastefully decorated rooms and suites looking out over the splendor of the Swiss Alps. Later, choose one of countless opportunities to explore the surrounding nature with skiing, hiking, biking, or walking among some of the most popular selections, or enjoy the scenic tennis courts and Olympic-size pool located right on the Palace grounds. Yet perhaps the best choice is actually to do nothing at all. As the Italian saying goes, “Dolce far niente” – the sweetness of doing nothing – is an art that can be easily perfected here amidst this majestic backdrop. Spend the day at the enchanting Walig Hut, a hidden gem that dates back to 1786, and experience the purity of the mountain air from over 5500 feet up. Return in time for dinner at one of the Palace’s 5 exquisite restaurants featuring diverse menus ranging from local Swiss to authentic Italian cuisine. To end the night, stop by the Palace’s seventies-style nightclub, GreenGo, or lounge by the Lobby Bar to enjoy the live music and great company regularly found here.

To gain a better understanding of what life is like in this dreamlike village, take a stroll or horse drawn carriage ride through the center of Gstaad and marvel at its characteristic chalets. Take part in the local way of life and treat yourself to the traditionally prepared Swiss dishes served at the Stübli Restaurant in the Posthotel Rössli. Built in 1823, the Posthotel Rössli is the oldest hotel in town and still holds true to its original charm. While here, indulge in the savory goodness of their locally produced cheese fondue or Zurich-style veal in a delectable mushroom-cream sauce and send your taste buds soaring with their Gruyère double cream and assorted berries for dessert. Journey up to the mountain peaks on a breathtaking cable car ride and see the region from a whole new perspective. Take in the unobstructed mountain panorama from the highest location in the region at the Wasserngrat mountain top restaurant. Picnic tables on an open terrace and inside seating by the warmth of the fire create a perfectly rustic atmosphere that will appeal to all your senses. A Swiss Apéro comprised of carefully cured meats and a selection of regional cheeses served on a wooden slab and paired with a refreshing glass of wine or cold beer, will make your mountain experience complete.

After a long day of exploring all that the spectacular Saanenland region has to offer, take time to relax at the invigorating Palace Spa. Nothing says beauty and wellness better than the peaceful ambiance achieved here through carefully designed natural elements that bring the serenity of the mountains right to you. Fully equipped with eight treatment rooms, a Private Spa Suite, saunas and steam baths, an indoor and outdoor pool with Jacuzzi, a Pilates Studio, and state-of-the-art gym, the Palace Spa has everything you need to feel refreshed and rejuvenated. Mexico's Rancho La Puerta Living Long is the Best Revenge By Joe Alexander Rancho When Rancho La Puerta was founded by Deborah Szekely and her husband Edmond 75 years ago it cost $17.50 a week and you needed to bring your own tent. Today it is a lush paradise with miles of hiking trails and indoor and outdoor exercise pavilions where you can turn inwards and focus on your mind, body and spirit. Deborah, who also founded The Golden Door who’s guests have included Nicole Kidman, Donald Trump, Martha Stewart and Barbara Streisand promises, “In only a week you will learn that the body has an incredible ability to respond to kindness, not the least of which are rest, stretching, vigorous activities and eating well.” One look at this vivavasious earth mother and you are ready to start breathing, stretching, walking, running, swimming and mediating. “World’s Best Destination Spa ” Madonna, Robert Redford, Kate Winslet, Governor Jerry Brown, Arianna Huffington and Oprah have all gotten slimmer and stronger at Rancho La Puerta. This Fitness Resort and Spa is an hour from San Diego in Tecate, Mexico. It was opened in 1940, making it the oldest and to many the best spa in North America. ‘Rancho” as devotees of this luxurious 3,000 acre oasis refer to it has for the fourth time in five years been voted “The “Worlds Best Destination Spa “ by the readers of Travel + Leisure. rancholapuerta.com Watsu With over 50 unique classes including yoga, tennis, Pilates, Kettlebells , H20 Boot Camp, the Bar Method and a tantalizing array of new classes like Feldenkrais, Gyrokinesis, Craniosacral therapy and one my personal favorites, Crystal Bowl where you lie back and let the soothing sounds of the bowls heal you. And when you go please take a private Watsu class where you are guided through a series of balletic movements in a pool heated to 88 degrees Fahrenheit in the arms of your instructor. Think of the Cirque du Soleil show “O.” In fact, these instructors trained many of the performers in the show. Although the morning hikes start at 6:15am and the last lecture is at 8pm, you are encouraged to move at your own pace. All the classes are adjustable so guests from 14 to “ever young” can workout. Mount Kuchumaa “I’m not interested in slowing down,” confided an inspirationally healthy Deborah, who celebrated her 93rd birthday this past May by climbing to the top of one of Mount Kuchuma’s many peaks. The spa here is also world class with a myriad of treatments from Mountain Stone Hot Mas-

sages, herbal wraps, Birchwood Terapy, Rosemary Loofah Salt Glow, Japanese Restorative Facials, mani-pedis and maternitiy and couple massages. There are also swimming pools to lounge by, art and cooking classes and even a wine bar with a breathtaking view of Mount Kuchumaa, which is also called the “exalted high place” by the Kumeyaay Indians who still hold annual religious gatherings there. On my last visit I took a writing workshop with Erica Jong, whose iconic first book was Fear of Flying. Erica, who has been coming to the Ranch for decades taught a writing workshop here and read from her new book Fear of Dying, which came out this fall. The Vineyards The Ranch now welcomes about 140 guests every week and costs approximately $3,500 per person. There are 83 perfectly appointed and spacious haciendas with a bedroom, sitting room, fireplace and a private terrace. The resort has some of the most beautiful gardens in North America designed by Deborah’s daughter Sarah Livia Brightwood, a noted landscape architect. The grounds are outlined with lush floral patterns, cactus patches, vineyards and vegetable gardens. The winding brick paths are lined with flowers including lilies, irises, geraniums and roses. There are fields of yellow black-eyed Susan’s and daisies dotted with enormous ancient wagons that used to be pulled by indigenous beasts of burden. Walking around Rancho is a singular pleasure. Living to 100 Dubbed “The Mother of the Modern Spa Movement,“ she credits her mother, Rebecca Shainman who was vice president of NY’s Vegetarian Society in 1926 with her longiviety. “I think vegetarianism, especially as you get older, is important because the body needs to be treated more gently by eating everything fresh. This legendary “health nut,” her phrase not mine, says it’s the state of your mind that should be number one on your list if you want to become healthy, fulfilled and a 100. “I don’t factor failure into my thinking. So if something doesn’t go quite like I want it, I adapt and change it. We’re talking about courage and resilience. State of mind is very important and enjoying what you do. Whatever your work is, it should be a pleasure, not work. These are the things that are so important. And then comes the quality of the food and then comes the quality of the movement. Delight in the little things in nature and in life. I think it’s hard to be truly healthy without that.” wellnesswarrior.org October 2015 | 103

THE LODGE AT Glendorn Fall Foliage at its Best

T

By Christopher A. Pape

here’s nothing quite as magical as the Northeast fall foliage in October. Surrounded by the Allegheny National Forest, The Lodge at Glendorn is an ideal setting to fully embrace nature and take in the gorgeous fall foliage amongst a majestic setting of babbling brooks, streams and lakes. This luxurious five star property in Northwest Pennsylvania features 16 individual cabins designed in a grand country lodge style ensconced in 1,500 acres of nature. Steeped in history, The Lodge at Glendorn was originally established in 1927 by C.G. Dorn as a retreat for his growing family. For over 70 years, it remained in the family until it was sold to Cliff Forest who restored the lodge to its former grandeur and carefully preserved the history of the magnificent estate. Each of the 16 cabins have a distinct personality with exquisite décor. For nature lovers, the brick and stone 104 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

colonial style Roost overlooks a stream and is surrounded by hemlock and maple trees with a warm and cozy ambiance enhanced by an ensuite fireplace. For avid fishers, a lakefront guesthouse overlooks Skipper Lake with an expansive courtyard that is ideal for indoor/outdoor living. The Loft is the most modern cabin with private baths and jetted tubs with a billiards table for entertainment. For the ultimate in privacy the Forest Hideout is located away from the rest of the cabins on top of the hill surrounded by hardwood forests with a large private terrace making it an ideal cabin for a romantic getaway. John’s cabin is decorated in a country style with a sleeping swing overlooking Skipper Lake from the porch. Sleep to the sounds of a gentle waterfall in Dale’s Cabin filled with American colonial style antiques that overlooks the brook with a working water paddle wheel. The Overlook is designed with a tasteful hunting lodge décor and is one of the few dog friendly rooms available.

Dining is a treat at The Lodge at Glendorn with Executive Chef Joe Schafer at the helm. He has created a seasonal contemporary American menu infused with French techniques, seasonal local ingredients, and favorite regional farm to table dishes. Enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail on their scenic terrace before embarking on a lavish culinary journey. For dinner, start with a delicious first course such as porcini risotto with truffle, amberjack with yuzu, mangosteen, and coconut, or white tomato soup with crab. Second courses range from squab with pistachio and foie gras, scallops with corn and chorizo, braised short rib or fresh pasta with braised rabbit and morel. For the main course, choose from lamb loin with Vadouvan sausage, veal tenderloin laced with a Madeira jus and chanterelles, filet of beef or amish chicken with black garlic. Leave room for their decadent desserts ranging from Gianduja chocolate mousse,

lemon soufflÊ with white chocolate, date cake, or a healthy biodynamic rhubarb. If you want to try your hand at recreating these fabulous dishes Chef Schafer also conducts cooking classes where he bestows his well honed techniques to his guests. There are plenty of outdoor activities to keep the whole family busy from luxurious spa treatments to fly fishing, boating, or leisurely strolls through the woods - you are only limited by your own imagination. Whether you just want to get away from it all and become one with nature, or simply relax and imbibe the fresh forested air, there’s never been a better time to visit The Lodge at Glendorn to rejuvenate the senses. glendorn.com October 2015 | 105

OMNI BEDFORD SPRINGS A Country Retreat

By Jennifer Pelaez

o need to bring your passport to experience that European oldworld nostalgia. Just a few hours away, steeped in historical significance and luxurious comfort, the Omni Bedford Springs Resort is the perfect haven for relaxation. Set in the rocky Allegheny Mountains of south central Pennsylvania, the Omni Bedford Springs Resort has been hosting celebrities, corporate magnates, dignitaries from around the world, as well as eleven U.S. presidents, seven of whom visited during their presidency, for over 200 years. What began in the early 1800's as a hotel for patrons seeking better health and wellness, some even a cure for their ailments, has continued to blossom into one of the country's most impressive and elegant resort hotels. Renowned for its sprawling 2,200 acres, including eight mineral

springs, Omni Bedford Springs successfully combines the legacy of its storied past with the modern amenities that distinguish it as a top resort today. As you make your way up the hillside, Omni Bedford’s classically columned red brick facade and porte cochere set the stage for your stately arrival. The fusion of its old-world charm and new modern luxuries are central to the harmonious blend of these two worlds which is carried over into the interior decor of its accommodations and communal areas. Whether staying in the renovated original building or in the new spa wing, you will enjoy spacious rooms and splendidly idyllic views as you begin to plan your stay activities, beginning at the magnificent 30,000 square foot European style spa - the luxurious Springs Eternal Spa.

While the heart and inspiration of the spa are the resort’s eight natural mineral springs, first used by the local Native Americans for their healing properties, this state-of-the-art facility is as equally remarkable and has incorporated the spirit of the natural springs into its full menu of health and beauty treatments. It’s one of the few spas in the country to use natural spring water in all their treatments. From Body Rituals like the Detoxifying Thermal Mud Wrap to massages like the Native Essence Massage, utilizing warm herbal poultices, you will have plenty of options to choose from to revitalize and recharge your mind and body. True spa buffs can select even more specialized treatments like Acutonics in which precisely calibrated tuning forks are placed on acupuncture points to deliver powerful healing energy, and Intuitive Touch, which incorporates Reiki, a form of Japanese healing, to reduces stress and re-balance. For those looking to sample several treatments, be sure to peruse through the many packages such as

the First Lady Package offering the ultimate spa day designed to awaken and invigorate the senses through an entire body pampering, a complete journey for the senses. Afterwards, unwind with some tea in the Relaxation Lounge or in the tranquil Spa Garden, but not before enjoying the Bedford Bath Ritual which features an aromatic steam, mineral deluge, whirlpool, and cold plunge before checking out. Regardless of your spa treatment selections or participation in any of the plethora of activities throughout the complex including hiking and biking trails, not to mention one of the nation's oldest golf courses, and top-notch dining, you will be immersed in a world of serenity and natural beauty, the perfect escape to transform into a more peaceful and improved version of yourself. omnihotels.com/hotels/bedford-springs October 2015 | 107

A Restaurant in the Heart of Paris La Cour Jardin Delights

I

By Marianne Belmonte

f you are fortunate enough to find yourself in Paris in spring, summer or early fall then a must dining experience should take you to La Cour Jardin. Literally meaning the courtyard garden it is located at the Hotel Plaza Athene. A newly renovated terrace, you will find yourself in a peaceful garden filled with flowers and olive trees providing you with a sense of wellbeing. If it isn’t enough to be in a beautiful setting, in the middle of a bustling city such as Paris, well then this creative menu, featuring light and seasonal fare, is sure to delight. An ingenious melding of two cuisines, Chef Fumiko Kono has created unique signature dishes combining French and Japanese techniques. Attention placed on detail, and the freshest of ingredients, an example of these dishes are his ParisTokyo cream of mushroom soup, salmon sashimi with avocado and salade nicoise tataki; all are brilliant. Also offered is the “La Cour Jardin Bento Box.” This consists of orange flavored carrot with sesame, green platter of asparagus and courgette, creamed anchovies and sudachi citrus, marinated soy-lacquered mackerel with aubergine miso and grilled walnuts. Matieu Emeraud the head chef along with his team is in charge of essential fare contributes his talents to ensure the highest standard of quality and oversees that all dishes are impeccably prepared. Mainly based on a Mediterranean cuisine, whether choosing the bouillabaisse,

grilled sea bass, chilled blue lobster, octopus, duck foie gras or beef tartare, you won’t be disappointed. This restaurant embodies all the wonderful qualities of this magical city, Paris “City of Lights and Lovers.” It displays an inventive touch with an expertly crafted menu and a brilliant paring of wines by sommelier Julien Gonzales that complements each course. Incredibly, this leaves you feeling not only satisfied but somehow more closely connected to this fascinating and eclectic city in a way you have never felt before. What Parisian meal would be complete without including hand crafted deserts? Pastry chef Christophe Michalak and head pastrycook JeanMarie Hiblot have developed the perfect ending to a perfect meal with their offering of pastries and fresh fruit, the main ingredient being red berries direct from the farm. Mouthwatering! I could go on with more details about this extraordinary culinary experience but suffice it to say, when in Paris, do as the French do and pay a visit to this fine restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner daily, spring through mid-September, the address 25,av. Montaigne, Paris France. If you do find yourself there, you will be sure to have a memorable experience, one that you will look forward to every time you visit Paris. dorchestercollection.com/en/paris/restaurants-and-bars/32-la-cour-jardin
