We are thrilled and over-the-moon to feature the “Queen of Burlesque.” We spoke to her in Australia, where she was walking the runway for the brand, Wheels and Babydoll. By Isaiah Negron Holiday Shopping With the holiday shopping season kicking into high gear jewelry designer Lisa Jackson has launched a curated collection of clothing including wool capes and scarves for fall and winter. In addition to new fine jewelry, clutches and totes there is also resort wear and household items including LJ Cross handblown glasses and vases. Jackson’s brand is founded on luxe femininity, informal elegance and soft modernism.

Fellow designers and long Islanders Tory Burch and Vera Wang as well as Renee Zellweger and Michael J. Fox have all turned to Lisa Jackson for her modern design aesthetic and to create beauty in their lives. Although Jackson’s flagship shop is at 994 Madison Avenue at 77th Street, this past summer, she opened a pop up boutique in Sag Harbor at JANGEORGe at 11 Madison Street. In September, Christie Brinkley hit her Madison Avenue shop and bought an Arts and Science dress, Yummi jacket, an LJ Cross cashmere scarf and Lola hat.

Jackson has had a long string of successes, beginning her career as a private Art and Antiques Consultant, traveling the world in search of exceptional art and rare antiques before entering the world of interior design.

“It started when I was randomly asked if I could design an apartment. I always had a creative side so I said, ‘Sure!’ and, honestly, the guy was too cute to refuse!” she laughs.

In 2014, Jackson took a step in a new direction and launched LJ Cross, a fashion-forward line of fine jewelry and signature crosses featuring innovative designs and gemstones. Jackson utilized her signature minimalist style and 28 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

eclectic design sense to create bold statements and unique looks for each piece. “For me, the cross is a spiritual symbol. It has nothing to do with religion,” she explains. “I made the line to be feminine, chic, dramatic and filled with must-have items.” Among her newest creations are selections of pieces dubbed “Diamonds for the Beach.” These include the Cobblestone Collection and the Stevies, named after her late brother Steven, who was the inspiration for LJ Cross. Each piece exudes a laid back luxury, such as her stunning gold Cobblestone Ring with over four carats of diamonds.

“Design is a process. We started with this large moonstone cross that I knew was the first and the last. Then we moved onto diamonds. Much more girly and cool,” Lisa remembers. “Now I really feel we have signature looks that LJ Cross really owns. I’m very proud of that.”

Blue Haven Although she is a lifelong Long Islander, who lives in a landmarked house in Southampton called Blue Haven, Jackson owes much of her inspiration to living in NYC. “I’m a minimalist at heart and growing up in Manhattan exposed me to all kinds of architecture and design,” Jackson explains. “I’ve always been drawn to simplicity and feel very comfortable in my point of view.” Her visual talent has allowed her to branch out in many ways, but Jackson says she is nowhere near finished, and is ready to build LJ Cross into an international luxury lifestyle brand. BCBGMAXAZRIA Spring 2016 An Ode to California

s the first show to kick of New York Fashion Week: The Shows at the Skylight Moynihan Station, Lubov Azria, the creative director of BCBGMAXAZRIA, was all aglow with her Spring 2016 collection. This season she looked to her own backyard of Southern California for inspiration with a 70s vibe. Breezy silhouettes were embellished with Mexican baja inspired embroidery and layered with mixed knit ponchos and elongated sweaters. Long sleeved tie dye shirts were paired with maxi dresses, blouson shifts were accessorized by patchwork bucket hats. It was all about easy styles with a boho luxe twist. Here we caught up with the multi talented and gorgeous Lubov Azria backstage and chatted about her inspiration, collection, and staying relevant as the brand has recently celebrated its 25th birthday.

Can you tell me a little bit about your California inspiration for Spring 2016?

We are based in LA, so we wanted to go back to our roots. Usually we travel the world like Istanbul, Barcelona, but we did some research on skateboarding on music and art. Who is your woman?

Our woman is always in the forefront. She loves fashion and she loves to be seen. When I think of the woman who wears our runway pieces, she doesn’t have a job. She dances and dines and has the best time of her life.

How do you keep the line fresh and young and appealing to the next generation?

First of all I have five daughters, and I surround myself around people I love and who influence me, we have a great rapport, we exchange ideas and its really about surrounding yourself with people that you think are better than you.

D

esigners at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016 produced a range of very pretty soft silhouettes with peek boo cutouts, nods to fashion icons of the past and a convergence of art and fashion. Hair and beauty were effortless, and gowns ranged from sunny jewel tone brights to monochromatic black and white allowing the outfit to make the statement over the accessories. Nods to the '50s ladylike Mad Men era silhouettes and fabrics were shown, as well as, the easy boho luxe style of Baja California and street art found in urban centers.

ita von Teese is a bit of an anachronism who has channeled the seductive '40s and '50s screen icon pin up girl with amazing accuracy and is often dubbed the "Queen of Neo Burlesque." Dita has been essential in resurrecting this seductive art of a bygone era. Her signature look has transcended time, while she depicts that cinema noir sense, Old Hollywood duality to embody the sexy glam siren, with the intimidating femme fatale persona, that she finds to be empowering. Here we catch up with Dita von Teese during the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival where she is walking during the closing show for Melaine Greenberg’s vintage inspired Wheels and Babydoll collection.

How did your collaboration with Wheels & Babydoll come about?

Melaine and I met in 2009, I was in London and she was in the same hotel and she sent over some clothes and I loved the brand and packaging. I wrote her to thank her and thought it would be great to work together and do a cardigan together and it just took off, we’ve already done 20 colors. They’ve become collector’s items and girls stack them and tag me in their Instagram posts and even go on eBay for over $800. What I love about it is that it looks really cute on everyone and we have a full range of sizes to 16 and different ages. My mom wears it also. We did it together and it comes in a French armoire box.

What do you think of Australian designers?

I’ve worked with some of the good ones like Aurelio Costarella, and collaborated with Toni Maticevski on a small collection of dresses.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

I’m wearing a lot of Wheels & Dollbaby, but I have my go to designers that I shop with and the ones I wear on the red carpet which are loaners.

I really only shop in the winter and I wore a lot of John Galliano when he was with Dior also a lot of Lanvin. For summer clothes, I wear Wheels & Dollbaby or '50s dresses, and Jean Paul Gualtier, Elie Saab, Zuhad Murad and Jenny Packham for the red carpet. A lot of the designers I wear are people I like as friends and have personal relationships with.

Are you going to Paris Fashion Week?

I’m not going until November but I usually go in January for the couture shows.

How did your fascination with vintage glamour begin?

It started in high school when I didn’t have any money to spend because my parents didn’t buy me designer jeans. So I started to shop at flea markets and buy vintage clothes. I felt like I could emulate certain looks in vintage because it wasn’t as cool back then as it is now. That’s the real reason I started dressing in retro style was that I also felt like the beauty aspects of retro glamour really appealed to me, because red lipstick was only $2 and you can have instant glamour. The era was really about creation and it’s not about how naturally pretty you that era’s about a different level of glamour which I love.

I hear you have a glamour floor in your house?

I just moved recently. In my other house, I had a whole floor dedicated to my glamour wardrobe. I had one room dedicated to all of my shoes, one room for my hats, one for all of my clothes. I’ve been collecting vintage clothes since the early '90s and I have a lot in my collection including two storage spaces full of vintage clothes, but I look at it as a more of an archive and collection of antique and vintage clothing. So it’s now two rooms and my bedroom is also on the glamour floor.

What are the things you can’t live without when you travel?

After the basic things - a great coat because you can look great after coming off the airplane, sunglasses, shoes that are comfortable and glamorous at the same time. I think with these things you are set.

Do you have a particular beauty regimen?

I have sensitive skin so I see a dermatologist when I have issues and one who isn’t famous with their own line of products. I shun all of that. I go to a serious skin doctor, not someone who has lasers and I know who isn’t going to make me spend $3000 and one who takes insurance. I use Eminence skincare it’s all natural and organic. I read an article that Madonna was using and I’ve seen her in person and whatever she’s using that’s what I want to use. I also do pilates 3-4 times a week.

I’ve always had this obsession with grown up glamour, when I was a little girl all I ever wanted to be was a grown woman. I’ve always wanted to look older and it’s funny when people see me without makeup say to me you look so much younger you should go out like that all the time, but I never wanted to look younger. I’ve always wanted to look like a woman, not a young girl.

I think the femme fatale look was always like a woman who had power and control and could be a little bit feared. I was always a little shy in life, I’m a natural blonde from a farming town in Michigan. Having this image I always felt like I was a strong woman not to be messed with, I liked that, but there were moments in my life where it was hard to meet men it was intimidating.

I’ve had such a hard time being single, I liked the intimidating factor of the look of the femme fatale but it can backfire as well. I think its empowering to look like the femme fatale but be super nice.

What projects are you working on?

Tell me about your new book coming out in December.

I wanted to write a book that is my whole philosophy on beauty and glamour, and I felt there wasn’t really a beauty book for people like me that have different references. There are all of these beauty books that tell you how to have tasteful or natural makeup or beauty advice from people who have a glam squad. I do my own hair and makeup and I don’t have a team of people. I wanted to break down what I believe the power of glamour is, what makes us different from each other, beautiful and interesting. It’s full of references that are not the typical American standards of beauty. The way we’ve seen the ideal of beauty change and now women are different, I wanted to write a book about that.

How would you recommend that women incorporate glamour into their everyday life?

For me I love red lipstick, it’s so simple it gives a bright joyful color. I love makeup in general it’s something you can do everyday and it changes.

People can find a signature look whether it’s a thick heavy cateye, red or orange lips, it has to be a signature powerful statement look created by makeup.

Your image vacillates between glamour girl and femme fatale, which do you think is more of your personality.

The book is exciting, coming up with new cardigan colors, my lingerie line that I’m continuously working on, and coming up with a few new shows.

What do you love most about Australia?

I think what I love most is that when I come here I feel so embraced. People generally understand what I do and what my glamour mission is. Some places don’t really get it and I feel here they really know me and what I want to do. In the US, they kind of know me but don’t really know what I do. Whereas here they know I have a lingerie collection, I do this show, burlesque is really embraced here. It’s just my perception and most of my collaborations have been here. My lingerie line, dress line, and cardigan line was launched here. It just sort of clicks with me here and they believe in me.

Some of the world’s newest design talent comes from Australia, and Telstra Perth Fashion Festival is a platform for established as well as up and coming Western Australia and international designers to have their collections presented to the world. This season designers such as Dilettente, Empire Rose, Akira, Phuong My, Toni Maticevski, Jamie Lee, Wheels & Dollbaby, Ae’lkemi, as well as winners from the Western Australia Designers Competition showed in a week long festival that celebrated fashion and talent in the beautiful capital city of Perth.

And The Haunted Druid Ruins

hen I first began photographing the old North Shore estates as a teenager, there were at least 400 of them abandoned and doomed along the shores of the Long Island Sound.

Within ten years time, all of them would be gone, except for one, Rosemary Farm. It was impossible to get to and surrounded by almost a thousand acres of land that was owned by the Catholic Church.

Perched high on a hill, in Lloyd Harbor it was left to simply molder away on its own, and spared attacks by vandals because no one knew it was there.

The rusted vine entangled gates off West Neck road had been chained shut since the twenties. I discovered it by accident while rambling along on horseback one day. It just stood there and seemed to brood, a dark empty ruin- another haunting reminder of a time that would never come again.

A faded greeting card found amid the attic clutter bore the ironic legend: “ Here’s Rosemary”, for Remembrance” Over those words and etching of the manor house in is heyday was a painted sprig of the healing herb. Each year hundreds of those cards were sent to friends during the Christmas

holidays. Inside the derelict building vines crept along the floors, reaching in through the broken windows. Black birds rustled in nests they built in the exposed beams and rafters. There was an overpowering smell of arsenic, (perhaps used as rat-poison) that rose up from the underground tunnel that ran from the woods to the basement of the house. Why the tunnel was built remains a mystery. On the main floor an elaborately decorated pipe organ stood silent. Shades of Norma Desmond, in “Sunset Boulevard.” One could almost imagine the Back Fugue’s being played in the mansions early days.

All that was missing was the dead monkey lying in the little white coffin and the creepy butler digging a grave nearby, but lets not get carried away. The ceilings seemed on the verge of collapse, and the discolored walls and oak panels were festooned in cobwebs. Despite the arsenic, you could hear the rats or something unseen scuttling about in the walls.

In 1902, Roland Conklin, a capitalist, bought some 200 acres in West Neck, Lloyd Harbor, and commissioned architect, Wilson Eyre to build him a great manor house high on a wooded bluff overlooking the Long Island Sound.

Macabre and curious statues rose up in unexpected places

It was unique among North Shore houses with its double gables, overhanging bays, and rich groupings of richly carved windows stained a deep mahogany color. The upper walls were covered with rare shingletype terra-cotta tile. Originally the shutters were painted a deep forest green, but over the years they began to hang at odd angles on rusting hinges. At one time the interiors were among the finest on Long Island, with unusual carvings by Edouard Meane along the main floor gallery. A pair of brooding medieval figures graced the stairway newel posts. Rare old paintings once hung from a carved oak gallery that overlooked the massive living room. In the master suite there were exposed beams with colorful hand painted murals depicting the “Canterbury Tales” and at the far end a centuries-old stained glass window. Looking more like a Hollywood stage set, one entered the dining room through a pair of giant twisted, poly-chromed, Venetian columns carved with fruit, vines and dragons.

The dining room chairs were French Medieval church choir stalls. They surrounded a huge round sixteenth century oak table.

Conklin, who made and lost several fortunes in utilities, foreign transportation, and sugar, had married the beautiful Mary MacFadden in 1895. Her portrait painted by noted photographer and artist Edward Steichen, just after the estate was built. The gold framed, portrait hung in the oak paneled gallery along with other rare works of art. The Conklin’s lived a charmed life along with their three children who had their own bowling alley on the third floor. When Conklin’s beloved wife died suddenly,

the lights went out in the mansion and the house was closed up forever in 1924.

Else where on the gold coast the era was just warming up. Million dollar parties were being hosted for kings, queens and the Prince of Wales, and prohibition was making millionaires out of thugs from the Bronx and Queens.

No one cared where the booze came from as long as no party went dry.

For winter entertaining Conklin had a huge indoor theater built in the East wing of the house where whole orchestras were brought in to perform their favorite classics. The master of the house was a scholar who spent half the night in his vast Cuban mahogany library reading about the arts, geology, ancient history and its mysterious rituals. Inspired by the architecture of ancient civilizations and the Roman Coliseum, Conklin set out to build a near replica on the North, West end of his property.

Little remains of what was regarded as Rosemary Farm’s crowning glory, a spectacular open-air amphitheater laid out in a series of multilevel stonework tiers. It was built to hold five thousand people. In its center at the lowest level, an island rose up from an artificial lake. This in turn was surrounded by, intricate waterfalls, a stone bridge and fossil coral grottoes. The island was used as a stage and was encircled by a steel pipe. When the actors needed a costume change, or the stage set replaced by another, the fountain was turned on and jets of water rose sixteen feet into the air to act as a curtain.

The theater became famous during World War 1, when it was used for a gala fund raising event for the National Red Cross. There was a Shakespeare festival, Greek plays, and entire Broadway shows were brought out to the Long Island site. Theater greats like John and Ethel Barrymore, Tyrone Power, and Clifton Webb performed on that historic stage. Music great John Philip Sousa played his original compositions with his two hundred and fifty piece band.

Surrounding this colossal structure are dramatic views of the Long Island Sound, and park like vistas dotted with curious marble mythological creatures, including cloven-hoofed nymphs, Pan, and a statue of Sappho. Here they linger still buried amid the long tendrils of ivy that engulf the ruins today. They creep and stretch down along the rocks and gullies, and along the floor of the now empty pool. Great wooden pillars rise up from the island, while those that have fallen lay in heaps, crushed by falling branches from the ancient trees. A short distance from the house to the East is an imposing and unusual carriage house and barn. A clock tower rises up almost a hundred feet from on side and is dominated by a pair of carved rampant dragons supporting an ancient clock.

trees in the theater for a gala event and recreated some of the theatrical performances once held there. The event was a huge success with thousands attending.

Around that time I set out to capture some of the ruins on film. Using some of the rescued costumes from other estates, I experimented with infrared film and a vintage Rolleiflex auto timer to see if any spectral being might show up on film. But all I got were creepy images of myself looking gaunt and pale as ectoplasm. Infrared film turns the skin ashen gray.

The Haunted Druid Ruins At the very top of the amphitheater, facing East there is a curious series of ancient stone arches that some refer to as the Druid ruins. No one knows what their exact purpose was, but Conklin was fascinated with ancient history, myths, and pagan rituals, and over the years he collected thousands of stone boulders from ancient ruins on his world travels. Some are millions of years old and alleged to have been transported from Incan, Mayan temples, and the areas around Stonehenge in England. These were incorporated into the design of an arched temple like structure which creates a compelling sight at sunset as the light filters through the trees casting an eerie glow on the

wide stone arches. At the center is what had been a shallow round reflecting pool, surrounded by large flat rocks. Whether the stonework grotto like structure was built for decoration or some other purpose, there are rumors surrounding this most curious of Long Island places, everything from stories about the Indians, who once occupied those lands, to vibrations in the rocks themselves. A strange echo can be heard if you stand in the right spot and call out. One local claimed to hear a chorus of voices commingling with those of the rustling pine trees in the surrounding forest. On rare occasions phantom lights and balls of mist seem to hover about the ruins. Some have even been caught on film. Sounds like the setting for a horror movie, but if this unique and ancient setting was indeed used for pagan rituals, that could have included animal or even human sacrifices, such ominous energies could linger in such a place for a very long time.

Science has recently come up with valid reasons for such curious phenomena.

It was discovered that stones like granite or marble contain quartz crystal,

silica, and ferric salts, all substances once used in the making of sound recording equipment. It would appear that nature has a way of imprinting or recording every sound that has taken place at a particular site. So if hundreds or thousands of years ago Indians or ancient civilizations played drums or chanted in that spot, even a small amount of electricity in the atmosphere can trigger a replay of those sounds when you least expect it. There’s really nothing scary about it. But I dare you to trudge up to those ruins and spend the night alone during a full moon!

Restoring The Victory National Museum of the Royal Navy

his year on my visit to London, I traveled by train to The National Museum of the Royal Navy, at the Naval Base in Portsmouth, Hampshire, about an hour and a half’s journey by train from London.

We were met by the fundraising officer, Emma Strong, who I had first met a few months earlier, at the British Consul General’s residence in New York.

The museum of the Mary Rose, a ship from the time of King Henry Vlll, which sank in battle in 1545, in front of the King who had dined with the captain on the ship the day before, and was watching the battle from the land. Mary Rose lay in the mud at the bottom of the sea, until the 1960s when SCUBA, (self contained underwater breathing apparatus,) allowed archeologist Margaret Rule to locate the position of the ship.

Mary Rose was raised many years later, is now housed in it’s own dome shaped building. Along with the many artifacts recovered from the ship, visitors walk through the museum as though they are actually on the ship.

Modern technology has recreated the faces of the sailors who perished, and even of the dog whose skeletal remains were recovered.

Lord Horatio Nelson, including a life size statue of him and as well as many other interesting historic naval memorabilia, including a statue of his lover Lady Emma Hamilton. They never married, as they were both married to others, but had a child together in 1801, also called Horatio.

In addition to the Mary Rose, The Victory is also in the process of being restored. The Victory was Admiral Lord Nelson’s ship, and it is in dry dock right next to the Mary Rose museum. I was fortunate enough to be given a VIP tour of the Victory by the head curator Andrew Baines, a brilliant man with a mind like a walking computer. Andrew told the stories with such detail that I felt as though I was reliving the life of a sailor; how and where they ate, and slept and the conditions of the ordinary sailors and of the officers; the Admiral’s quarters, which for that time were quiet luxurious, and how Nelson was shot and bled to death on the ship.

If you are a naval history buff you may know of Nelson from the BBC TV series, or if not, you know of his famous statue at the top of the column in Trafalgar Square in London. Nelson died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and the column was completed in 1843. Nelson lost the sight of his right eye in battle in Corsica, and also lost his right arm in a latter battle at Tenerife.

Nelson’s famous command was “England expects every man to do his duty.” He was killed in battle in October, 1805. His body was preserved in brandy and transported back to England, where he was given a state funeral in January, 1806 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Nelson’s battles saved England from being invaded by Napoleon.

Now The National Museum of the Royal Navy is raising funds to completely restore the Victory. Many years ago a group was formed, the American Friends of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, AFNMRN, to give Americans the opportunity to be part of the restoration process.

In my travels back to England, I have learned that Americans have been very generous and supportive in helping to restore and preserve historic buildings and sites there.

The recent book, Nelson’s Victory; 250 Years of War and Peace, by Brian Lavery, is the definitive story of Nelson and The Victory. It has illustrations of wonderful paintings of that era, depicting ships in battle, including some by J. M. Turner and other artists.

The American Friends of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, will

hold a Trafalgar Luncheon, A Celebration of the History of British Sea Power, on Thursday October 29 aboard Cunard’s RMS Queen Mary 2, while it is docked in Brooklyn, NY. Cunard is celebrating it’s 175 anniversary, and president of Cunard North America, Richard Meadows, is the co-chair of this major event, with founding president of AFNMRN David W. Fleming and honored guests, Admiral Lord Michael Boyce KG GCB OBE DL* and Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, who is the patron of The National Museum of the Royal Navy, and only daughter of Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll.

alking into The Rinfret Group design studio late one August afternoon was a breath of fragrant, fresh air. A delicious candle permeated the room, and it was perfect for the late-summer season. Not too much, not too little. Simply, undeniably perfect.

fondly and softly of her wonderful relationship with her father. Her dad passed on recently, and like any loving daughter, she is devastated. Denise keeps a beautiful, timeless black and white photograph of herself with her father, sitting on her desk directly beside her computer screen so her dad is always in her eye’s view.

Meeting Denise Rinfret and Missy Rinfret Minicucci, the creative duo of The Rinfret Group was also a breath of fresh air. Denise, beautiful, blonde, sun-kissed tanned, and the mom of this mother/daughter collaboration, greeted me at her office door with a genuine, welcoming warmth and I immediately felt right at home. Missy, her daughter, gorgeous and blonde, wearing a classic shift the color of a yummy orange popsicle, entered the office from another room, glowing with vivacious energy. It is at once apparent that both these ladies have impeccable style, but what is also so evidently striking is their graceful presence.

Denise Rinfret has been designing for twenty-five years. She grew up in Manhattan and attended high school in New York City. Her father took her to art classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and they toured all the museums together as she was growing up. Her cultured childhood influenced her tastes in art and fashion. As we chatted, Denise spoke

Missy, who could quite possibly be a Lilly Pulitzer muse, or a J. Crew catalog model, and the other half of the Rinfret design team, describes The Rinfret Group style as traditional with a modern twist and a sense of humor. “We love beautiful, traditional lines and classic decor, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously,” laughs Missy Minicucci.

She spent her weekends at design showcase houses and weekdays with her mom, Denise, in New York City at the D&D Building and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her grandfather was an architect and put a pencil in Missy’s hand, teaching her to draw, so it was assumed that Missy would indeed follow her mom’s path in the interior design world.

While studying at Fairfield, Missy interned in finance, and worked for a hedge fund in Greenwich. She found herself daydreaming about being in the studio with her mother working on design projects, so she decided to take some time off and help with her mom’s design business. Missy became so passionate about design that she enrolled in New York School of Interior Design and she never looked back.

After design school, Missy worked on her own, first with a Manhattan designer, and for the luxury Italian furniture company, B&B Italia, as well as the renowned fabric company, Cowton & Tout. Missy’s influence is

Mario Buatta, and after working in the design world on her own, she feels right at home working with her mother and bringing in young, fun New York City clients.

The Rinfret Group has a distinguished list of clientele in Manhattan, Long Island and Connecticut. They have worked with Nancy Shevell, aka Mrs. Paul McCartney, Frank Pellegrino of the famous Manhattan restaurant Rao’s, and they recently did the Manhattan penthouse of shipping executive Doris Ho. Denise and Missy do large-scale projects and they also do design work on studio apartments. Their clients are business executives, notable stars, as well as local neighbors. The Rinfret Group has a modern but classic approach to their work and their rooms are highly identifiable as a Rinfret room.

Denise and Missy are currently working on a design project for the Ronald McDonald House. As we discuss the project, both women are animated and excited. “We love doing projects such as this, said Denise, “and we believe in the mission of the Ronald McDonald House.” As Missy shows me the idea board for the project, she speaks sweetly of the creative choices they’ve made for the room. And like everything else about The Rinfret Group, it’s not too much, and it’s undeniably perfect.

Break The Fast Healthful Options for Breakfast

By Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN I’m sure you’ve heard by now that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Do you know WHY? And do you even LISTEN to this mantra?

Week after week I encounter clients who skip this morning meal yet seek guidance for weight management. They explain, “I am too busy,” or “I am not hungry when I first wake up.” Regardless of the excuse, the facts supporting the importance for breakfast are indisputable. Let’s discuss…

Eating a healthy breakfast is essential for maintaining energy and attention levels, and even helps to avoid snacking later in the day.

According to research, skipping meals, especially breakfast, can make weight management more difficult as well. Researchers have also proven that adults who have a long-term habit of skipping breakfast tend to have higher cholesterol, higher LDL and higher insulin levels- all of which are precursors to heart disease and diabetes.

Consuming an early morning meal increases the metabolic rate (in other words, how fast you burn calories) and signals to your body that you are ready to start the day. Those who skip breakfast have a tendency to consume more food than usual the next time they eat and also are 82 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

more likely to snack on high-calorie foods to keep hunger at bay between meals.

Clearly, we should all get on the breakfast train! However, it is important to keep in mind that not all breakfasts are created equal. A healthy breakfast should consist of a low-fat protein and a high-fiber carbohydrate.

Protein-rich breakfasts help us develop healthy muscle and tissue, while also improving appetite control by reducing cravings and preventing overeating later in the day. Fiber-rich breakfasts, on the other hand, help us stay full and promote a healthy metabolism.

Here are some delicious and nutritious examples of breakfasts that are rich in both protein and fiber: 1) Chocolate covered strawberry smoothie Mix 1 cup of low-fat milk (or unsweetened almond milk) with 1 scoop of no sugar added chocolate protein powder (whey protein or pea protein both work), 1 handful of fresh or frozen strawberries and a few ice cubes.

Blend until mixed through.

2) Cottage cheese melon bowl Cut a small cantaloupe in half and scoop out the seeds in the center to create a melon bowl. Scoop ½ to ¾ cup low-fat cottage cheese into the “bowl.” Top with a pinch of ground flaxseed for a boost of heart-healthy fat.

3) Mexican-inspired egg white wrap Combine a few scrambled egg whites, ¼ cup black beans, a few tablespoons of salsa, and ½ of a small avocado. Wrap combo in a warm whole grain tortilla. Not a fan of egg whites? 1-2 whole eggs would work too!

4) Egg banana pancakes In a bowl, whisk together 2 eggs and 1 mashed banana. Preheat a skillet, spray with non-stick spray, and pour your batter. Cook silver dollar size pancakes for 30 seconds on each side and serve.

5) Chocolate peanut butter oats Cook ½ cup (uncooked) oatmeal with 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk or low-fat milk. Stir in 1 scoop of chocolate whey protein powder and 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter.

Combine 2 hard-boiled eggs with 1 small piece of fruit for a well-balanced portable breakfast.

his month it was all about the diverse flavors of NYC as we ventured in and out of Manhattan to explore the melting pot of flavors and cuisines that comprise the fabric of New York’s culinary scene. From a quaint French wine bar, to New York’s favorite neighborhood spots in Manhattan and beyond there’s something for everyone which is a testament to living in one of the greatest cities in the world.

Yorkers can be a hard lot to please, this provocative and interactive dinner performance doesn’t disappoint. Guests are ordered to dress in black tie or cocktail wear to “please the queen” and are seated in large group tables as they embark on this futuristic odyssey that has shades of cirque du Soleil with an undeniably seductive Hunger Games atmosphere. As acrobats whirl past you on stage and twirl from the ceiling above, guests imbibe in free flowing wines and shared medieval styled food served off of swords and spears. alloween isn’t the only reason to throw a party in October. For those of you looking to do something other than your typical costume party, it might be time to host your own Oktoberfest celebration. After all, the millions of people who attend the annual Munich celebration of beer and delicious food can’t be wrong!

As far as décor goes, Oktoberfest colors are blue and white, which is a great place to start for a decorating scheme. If the weather is nice, you could bring the fun and ambiance of the Munich Oktoberfest tents and canopies to your own backyard, as well.

One of the most important parts of Oktoberfest is beer, so why not create a beer garden in your own home? Your local supermarket or beer distributor should be able to give you advice, but be on the lookout for German beers. Ales, lagers, stouts, and porters will make a great beer menu for your guests. If you want to really impress, you can buy beer directly from Munich breweries, such as Hofbrau, Spaten,

and Paulaner, which will ship their beer to you. Use a large blackboard to write down the different beer varieties to give your home an authentic beer garden feel. Remember – proper beer glasses are a must, so stock up on beer steins or other festive mugs.

It isn’t Oktoberfest without pretzels! Serve up warm Bavarian pretzels, which you could make yourself or buy pre-made and bake them in your oven. If you don’t have the time, hard pretzel sticks will do in a pinch.

What will make these pretzels special are the dipping sauces. Create a Bavarian cheese sauce made with camembert, beer, chives, onions and black pepper. Or, provide a variety of different mustards, such as a spicy beer mustard, or a sweet and spicy mustard, to dip the pretzels in.

When it comes to heartier fare, bratwurst is another Oktoberfest staple.

You can cook it in the oven or grill it on the barbeque – whatever your preference is – but you must serve it with sauerkraut. You can certainly buy pre-made sauerkraut, or you can get creative in the kitchen and put your own spin on it. Plus, the health benefits from naturally fermented sauerkraut are wonderful, which makes it not only delicious, but nutritious for your guests.

Keeping in the spirit of Oktoberfest, you should also add schnitzel to

your menu. If you’re not familiar, schnitzel is a breaded, pan-fried cutlet typically made from pork or veal. You can serve them three different ways: with fresh lemon and parsley, in a rich brown mushroom gravy, or in a white cream sauce. And don’t forget the sides! Serve schnitzel with a German potato salad, fries or a traditional dish called spaetzle. Spaetzle is a German dumpling made with flour, water, and seasoning, and will make your Oktoberfest even more authentic.

With all of that savory food, you’re going to need something sweet. A traditional Oktoberfest desert is gingerbread hearts – millions of them are sold every year in Munich. These heart shaped gingerbread cookies are decorated with blue and white icing with fun sayings written on them, typically served on ribbons. These are easy to make at home and a quick Internet search can help inspire you for some decorating ideas.

For another dessert option, try making an apple strudel, which is always a favorite. Apples are in season this time of year, so take advantage of this delicious ingredient.

While you and your guests might not be able to make it to Munich for this year’s Oktoberfest, there’s no reason why you can’t recreate the festival’s delicious food, beer, and camaraderie in your own home. Cheers!

Mount Kuchumaa “I’m not interested in slowing down,” confided an inspirationally healthy Deborah, who celebrated her 93rd birthday this past May by climbing to the top of one of Mount Kuchuma’s many peaks. The spa here is also world class with a myriad of treatments from Mountain Stone Hot Mas-

On my last visit I took a writing workshop with Erica Jong, whose iconic first book was Fear of Flying. Erica, who has been coming to the Ranch for decades taught a writing workshop here and read from her new book Fear of Dying, which came out this fall.

The Vineyards The Ranch now welcomes about 140 guests every week and costs approximately $3,500 per person. There are 83 perfectly appointed and spacious haciendas with a bedroom, sitting room, fireplace and a private terrace. The resort has some of the most beautiful gardens in North America designed by Deborah’s daughter Sarah Livia Brightwood, a noted landscape architect. The grounds are outlined with lush floral patterns, cactus patches, vineyards and vegetable gardens. The winding brick paths are lined with flowers including lilies, irises, geraniums and roses. There are fields of yellow black-eyed Susan’s and daisies dotted with enormous ancient wagons that used to be pulled by indigenous beasts of burden.

Walking around Rancho is a singular pleasure.

Literally meaning the courtyard garden it is located at the Hotel Plaza Athene. A newly renovated terrace, you will find yourself in a peaceful garden filled with flowers and olive trees providing you with a sense of wellbeing.

If it isn’t enough to be in a beautiful setting, in the middle of a bustling city such as Paris, well then this creative menu, featuring light and seasonal fare, is sure to delight. An ingenious melding of two cuisines, Chef Fumiko Kono has created unique signature dishes combining French and Japanese techniques. he Hampton Classic horse show celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, continuing a rite for the end of summer that draws champion equestrians, celebrities, vacationing VIP and the young pony-riding set to Bridgehampton for a week. The Hampton Classic is the biggest and most glamorous summer finale on everyone’s minds on the East End.

The week-long celebration of Hamptons’ horsemanship and luxury lifestyle began with Opening Day continuing through Grand Prix Day. The Classic was, as it is every year, a huge draw for experienced and accomplished equestrians, horse lovers, celebrities and a multitude of bold-faced Hamptons notables.
