PUBLISHER’S NOTE
What an exciting month September is shaping up to be! Both the staff and I are very proud to announce that the magazine will now be available in Manhattan. Mostly found on the Upper East Side, 25A will aim to be (as it is in Long Island) your go to luxury publication. Residents of Long Island know us to be a dedicated team of professionals who only write about the best of our beloved area. It is our hope that New York City residents will feel the same way. On our cover this month is Legendary Journalist, Geraldo Rivera, who is both provocative and hard-hitting. Mr. Rivera is emblematic of New York and we can’t think of a better person to feature for our launch into the glitzy world of Manhattan. In this issue, we feature rebel heiress, Consuelo Vanderbilt Coston, a scion of the famed philanthropic family. In addition Monica Randall, our beloved historian takes us on a journey to the Hamptons and Victoria Crosby paints a picture of her English homeland. Fall is also about fashion finds and this season is no different. Check out our stunning fashion spread shot downtown at the beautiful restaurant, Saxon and Parole. I think you’ll be as inspired as I was when I first saw the photos. We also have exquisite Manhattan eateries, luxurious destinations and profiles on interesting New Yorkers. We are blessed to have excellent writers and loyal readers. Wishing you a festive fall!

A Hampton Story
Mysterious Happenings on the East End
I
Story and Photos by Monica Randall
never thought I’d share this story. My younger sister and I made a pact never to speak of it. Somehow we always thought we’d get into trouble, even though it happened almost sixty years ago. But in the end I did the right thing, I was compelled to by the ghost of an Indian who died over a century ago. From the time my sister and I were about seven or eight, our parents would rent a small beach house on the Bay off Three Mile Harbor Road, in East Hampton. My dad kept an old fishing boat there to use during the month of August. When not out on the boat waiting for a fish to bite, my sister and I would wander about collecting shells along the beach and exploring abandoned boathouses and barns that seemed to be everywhere. One day we spotted a weathered barn where a large tree had crashed through part of the roof. The inside was filled with fishing gear, a rotted boat and
24 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
dozens of lobster pots piled up to the ceiling. In a dark corner we spotted a long wooden box that looked like a coffin with brass handles on the side. Convinced there might be a skeleton inside, we waited a long time before curiosity got the better of us and we creaked open the lid. Several scary bugs scattered in all directions. The coffin was filled with old leather books that had been eaten by termites, and fell to pieces when we tried to open them. A dark red leather book that seemed in better shape than the others, was called, “The Super Natural” dated 1854. It opened with a quote by Wolfgang Von Goethe: “ The Unnatural, that too is Natural.” In a chapter called, “The Past is Entombed in the Present,” written by a long forgotten scientist named, Joseph Rhodes Buchanan, it was his belief that every object touched by man has its whole history recorded or imprinted on it. He claimed that the human mind has a natural ability to tune into, and play back everything that has happened to that object in the past.
View From the Cliffs on Gardiners Island
Buchanan, named his astonishing discovery, Psychometry. To prove his theory, he sought out people who by nature could simply hold a piece of metal, clothing, or jewelry in their hand, tune into it, and give details about the person who once owned it. The subject remains and enigma that has baffled modern science, and yet it happens all the time. I carried the book back to our beach house and read it on the porch swing until it was almost dark. The setting sun was beautiful as an azure stream of light glowed softly on the horizon and puffs of rose colored clouds stretched across the sky. Reading that old book was affecting the way I perceived everything. Haunted East Hampton Nowhere did the concepts in that book seem to play out more than in East
Hampton. I’d always felt it the moment you turn left off Montauk Highway. Some nameless something envelope’s you and a subtle overlay or alternate reality seems to play out as if on a videotape loop. It was like tuning into two different radio stations at the same time. On our way to our summerhouse, we always parked the car and walked around the lake and graveyard on Main Street. I remember that hyper alive state would kick in as we passed each ancient gravestone, and read the inscriptions. I could feel an energy rising up from the ground, but never paused long enough to make anything of it. When you’re a kid, you don’t question much, you just go along and assume that’s just the way things are. But, I’d swear I heard a lot of dead folks chattering away about this and that. Summers in the Hamptons during the fifties were a lot different than they are now. There were no crowds and you could always get a table at your favorite restaurant, but the town was crawling with writers, theater people and artists. September 2015 | 25

The Ghost of Captain Kidd is Said to Guard a Vast Treasure Buried on the Island in 1699
The most famous was Jackson Pollock, who was frantically hurling paint on twenty-foot canvases in his old barn just up the road from us. He was running out of time. He would soon drive his green Oldsmobile head on into a tree at ninety miles an hour, killing himself and a female passenger. So now we have two more ghosts haunting the fatal spot on Firehouse Rd. Gardiner’s Island The high point of each summer was when our dad would take us sailing around Gardiner’s Island, where we were told there was an ancient castle crowning its center. The forbidden island has an extraordinary history that dates back to 1639. The property was settled by Lion Gardiner, from a grant by Charles 1. By some miracle the Island has remained in the same family for over three hundred and seventy years, and is the only privately owned island to remain intact as part of an original royal grant from the English Crown. As the first Lord of the Manor, this gave Lion Gardiner the right to make his own laws, hold slaves, and hang anyone who got on his nerves for any reason what so ever. Some historic tidbits include, the infamous pirate, Captain Kidd buried a treasure on the Island in 1699. The booty included 26 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
gold bars, diamonds, rubies, Spanish dollars, and silver candlesticks. Kidd was hanged before he had a chance to reclaim the stolen treasure. Rumor has it that its still there, guarded by his ghost. One summer we set out in my dad’s boat as a heavy fog rolled in of the sound. In the distance the forbidden Island loomed, its steep cliffs almost lost amid swirling vapors. As we got closer, my dad cut the engine and we drifted into a shallow cove where No-trespassing signs were posted along the rocky beach. We climbed up a steep ridge where ancient trees thrust knotty roots through the open gullies, and sea grass sprouted from giant glacial boulders. When we got to the top, the air began to clear and we stood silent taking in the breath-taking beauty of that mysterious sanctuary where nothing had changed in a thousand years. There were herds of deer and wild turkey grazing in the distance. A magnificent bald eagle perched silently in a giant tree where I got the distinct feeling that someone had once been hanged. A hush fell over the Island as the fog enveloped everything in a grey ghostly light. In the distance you could hear the faint rhythmic sound of the waves washing gently over the rocky beach. Somewhere close, not

more than fifty feet away, a dark form began to take shape. It was a deer with wide antlers that splayed out like branches of a dead tree. It stood frozen, as if confused by the presence of strangers. We hadn’t been there very long when we thought we heard the sound of a horse galloping in our direction. Not wanting to take any chances on getting caught, we turned grabbed our dad’s hand an ran back to the boat, where we drifted back out to sea feeling as though we’d emerged from a wonderful dream. The Cottage In The Woods Late one afternoon, there were storm clouds in the sky, but after our Island adventure, my sister and I were antsy to go exploring the nearby woods. About a half a mile from our beach house, we veered off down an overgrown road. We hadn’t been walking very long when we spotted an old stone and timber cottage in a thicket of pines. The front door was open, and one of the windows was broken. We heard a rumble-of-thunder and it began to rain. Assuming it would pass soon enough, we ducked into the building. It had a damp musty smell and looked as though an artist may have lived there at one time. Now it appeared as though a family of raccoons had taken
over. Disorder crept ceiling high and cobwebs festooned along the upper shelves of a bookcase. There was a huge stone fireplace and a bear rug on the floor where a pair of vacant glass eyes stared out at us. In gloomy corners, incongruities and curious things were everywhere. My sister moved to pick up the bear rug, probably to scare me with, but when she reached down and pulled on it something metal fell to the floor, Though tarnished black, it looked like an old silver Indian belt made up of eight decorative oval medallions with a turquoise stone in each center. “This is interesting” she said, picking it up then tried to put it on, but it was too big for her. Outside the rain had suddenly stopped. “We’d better get back, we promised to be home in an hour”, I said, then without giving it any further thought we took the Indian belt with us, and never mentioned it to our parents. That summer ended. The Indian Ghost As we got older, our visits to the Hampton’s became less frequent. Both my sister and I went away to college, but before we left home, we divided up September 2015 | 27

the silver medallions, she took the long black leather belt that originally held all the pieces together. About ten years had passed and I was then living on the old Woodward estate in Oyster Bay. The property had been the scene of one of the most sensational murders in Long Island history back in the fifties, but that’s another story. I kept the four silver pieces on the fireplace mantle so I could admire them, and as much as I thought about stringing them back on a belt and wearing them, something always stopped me. Whenever I picked one of the pieces up, I felt a subtle shock, not quite an electrical surge, but some nameless something that often caused me to drop it. One night, I had a dream that was not like any ordinary dream, but one that felt more real than any waking state. I dreamt that I was standing in a clearing by a large oak tree, and an old American Indian appeared before me. He did not form words or sounds to communicate with me, but through a kind of telepathy said: “You must return the silver belt at once to its rightful owner. It was a gift from me to a young girl who was like a daughter to me.” I bolted out of bed, my heart racing, and knew that was not just a dream. It was very real. My sister and I had done a terrible thing. I quickly scrambled around the house to find a small box, then sat down and wrote a long letter to the East Hampton police department telling them everything. I gave them the location of the cottage in the woods that was a short distance from our former beach house. The police knew everyone in that small town, and I knew they would find a way to get it back to its owner. I mailed the package that morning, but did not sign my name on the letter, or give a return address. That afternoon I wrote my sister a long letter telling her what happened about the dream and the dire message from the Indian, and mailed it off to France where she was studying to be an artist. 28 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Old Rowboats in a Nearby Cove
Several days later I was in the kitchen baking a cake when the phone rang. It was the East Hampton Police Department. I sank to the floor, and the room began to spin. “How did you get my name?” I croaked. “Well, this is probably the weirdest story I’ve heard I’ve heard in all my twenty years with the department, but that cabin you found in the woods, when you were kids, belonged to an old woman, a recluse, who is one of the Gardiner’s of Gardiner’s Island. She ran away from that family when she was young and lived on a reservation for a while before they found her. She still lives there from time to time in that ramshackle house. We gave her your package and the next day she called back, very overwhelmed, and said that an Indian chief she knew as a girl appeared to her and gave her your name. But here’s the crazy part, The Indian’s been dead for almost seventy years.” The officer then asked: “Can you tell us when you’ll have the other half of the silver belt?” “Its on its way. I said, not recognizing my own voice. A week later a box arrived from my sister with the remaining silver pieces of the belt. I repacked them up and forwarded them to the East Hampton Police dept. I never heard from them again. In trying to make sense of it all, I often thought about Buchanan’s words in the book that we found, “The past is entombed in the present,” perhaps it is. I still drive out to the Hampton’s from time to time and stop at the gravesites and lake on Main Street, but in all the times I’ve returned to Three Mile Harbor Road, I’ve never been able to find the cottage in the woods.

THE AnVILLAGE OF BAYVILLE Authentic Feel with Grand Water Views
S
Text and Photos by Suzanne Vigliotti
ome people go to Bayville for a summer visit and never leave. Jean Mansueto, a licensed real estate broker and owner of Coast Realty on Bayville Avenue said, “I started with a summer home in 1961 and I’m on my third home in Bayville. I call it the Bayville Shuffle. Bayville people keep buying Bayville homes." Jean and others believe that it’s an alternative to the Hamptons with great neighbors like Billy Joel, and it’s surrounded by estates, but still affordable. “You can get a home starting around $300,000. Waterfront properties are priced anywhere from $600,000 to four million,” Jean extolled. She went on to say that it’s an amazing village and close to the city; 55 minutes on the express train from Locust Valley. You can also go from the Hicksville or Syosset stations.

The Village of Bayville, often referred to as Pine Island, is a village on Long Island Sound facing Greenwich Connecticut. The incorporated Village of Bayville is located within the town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York. Bayville is in a private setting, surrounded by high-income villages. Centre Island on the east, Lattingtown on the west and Mill Neck on the south side of the Bayville Bridge. People go to Bayville for a variety of reasons. The beaches are plentiful, the waterveiws are vast, the glorious sunsets, the mouthwatering restaurants with splendid views are just some of the village's fine qualities. You can enjoy The Bayville Adventure Park, a small waterside strip on the west end, which has bumper boats, miniature golf, an arcade and ropes to climb on high
in the sky. Or you can sit and savor an ice cream cone as the smell of salt water floats through the air. Bayville can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. Tom Sheehan, who grew up in Queens, said he moved there for the water and the small town feeling. “It’s like Mayberry from the Andy Griffith Show. It’s twenty minutes to the expressway, which is a pain, but I like that.” Tom also said that the schools are great and he is thrilled with them. Bayville is in the Locust Valley School District. The two elementary schools are each comprised of two separate building for grades K-2 and grades 3-5. The middle school for 6-8 shares the highschool campus. There are many popular restaurants in Bayville. Sit on the beach, or sit on the deck and enjoy the waterview at Wall’s Wharf which has a beachy atmosphere. It’s great to dine there and the children can play in the water. The Crescent Beach Club has wonderful views and nicely presented food. I’ve heard a lot of great reviews of Mill Creek Tavern, from their food to their
great service. Shipwreck Tavern has a relaxing atmosphere and delicious food. Ocean is a gorgeous restaurant on the water with excellent food. There’s fantastic pizza at Ralph’s Pizza, Mexican and Italian foods at La Cantina Bay and yummy take out at Souvlaki King. Wear your shorts to Bridge Marina restaurant and chill while you enjoy hamburgers, seafood, cold beer and wine. There are three village beaches, Soundside, and West Harbor for swimming and Creek Beach for boat launching and fishing. There are three Town of Oyster Bay beaches: Centre Island, Ransom and Stehl. Most of Nassau County’s Mill Neck Creek Preserve, a wetland area, is also in Bayville. Bayville is a beautiful village a little off the beaten track, but when you live there you feel like you're on vacation all year long. It’s a village that you want to stroll, eat ice cream, breath in the salty air, and just sit and realize how amazing life really is. A little out of the way, but well worth it. September 2015 | 31

VISITING WESTMINSTER ABBEY A Royal Setting
W
By Victoria R. Crosby, Photo Courtesy Westminster Abbey
estminster Abbey is a place where you could spend days studying and absorbing the history, art and architecture. On my visit to London last year, this was one of the places I was given a VIP tour. I had met the Dean of Westminster, John Hall, when he was in New York some years ago, visiting St. Luke and St. Matthew’s church in Brooklyn. The Rector, Rev. Michael Sniffen is from Bayville, and used to be the assistant priest at the Episcopal church in Locust Valley, St John’s of Lattingtown, where I have been a member for many year. Michael has spent some time studying in London and became friends with the Very Rev. Dr. John Hall, who was installed as the 38th Dean of Westminster in 2006. A the time I met Dean Hall I was the NY State President of the DBE Daughters of the British Empire, and my chapter here on Long Island is called Westminster Abbey Chapter. The organization was founded long before I was born, so I had absolutely nothing to do with the name of it, but it was a good conversation opener for me and the Dean. The Dean was away during the time of my visit to London, but the Director
32 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
of the Westminster Abbey Foundation, Valerie Humphrey, very kindly offered to give the tour. Valerie, originally from California, who still had a slightly American accent, is now married to an Englishman and has lived in the UK for over twenty years. I arrived early at the Abbey and was just in time for an 8am service in one of the small side chapels. The Rev Christopher Stoltz led the short service. We chatted afterwards, and I was surprised to learn that he was originally from Montana in the US, and had lived in England for ten years. His English accent was perfect, and I never would have guessed he is American. During one of our phone conversations prior to meeting, Valerie had suggested that we meet at the café in the church undercroft, where we enjoyed a full English breakfast after the service. Westminster Abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage site, built for William the Conqueror in 1066. It’s history goes back a thousand years as Benedictine monks worshiped on the site in the tenth century.
Every British Monarch was crowned at Westminster Abbey, from William the Conqueror, December 25 1066, to Queen Elizabeth ll on June 2, 1953. (With the exception of Edward V and Edward Vlll, who were never crowned.) In addition to coronations, Westminster Abbey is also the site of many royal weddings. The Queen, who was at the time Princess Elizabeth, married Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on November 20th 1947, and more recently, the wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton, on April 29 2011, so far sixteen royal wedding have taken place there. It was thrilling to walk in the footsteps of the Royals, and our tour included places behind the scenes that the public doesn’t usually see. One of these places was the gallery, which is seventy feet above the floor of the abbey, and where the media placed their cameras, to record for television the Royal weddings and the coronation of the Queen in 1953. It will open to the public in 2018, the first time in 700 years that people will be able to view the artwork of “attic treasures” that have been stored there for centuries. A new tower with elevators, will be built to enable access to the museum and art gallery, named the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries.
The style will be in keeping with the Gothic architecture and the cost will be more than twenty million dollars. Fundraising has begun, about half has been raised so far, and is supported in part by the American Fund for Westminster Abbey. There are more than 3,000 famous people throughout history, buried or commemorated at the abbey, including priests, musicians, military, actors, politicians, architects, nobility and seventeen monarchs. Some are buried there, others are memorialized with a stone or stained glass window. Poets and writers are in the area known as Poet’s Corner, which is very popular with visitors. Not all are British, as there is a bust of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and above the west entrance is a statue of Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, which was unveiled in 1998. There is a plaque in memory of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and a plaque for American benefactors who donated to the restoration of the abbey. The names, which keep increasing, can be found in alphabetical order on the abbey’s website. westminster-abbey.org.

SOCIAL HUNT
The Nationwide Hunt for Celebrity Treasure
T
By Salome Langvin
his fall, the ultimate celebrity treasure chest will be buried in an undisclosed location in the United States, allowing people to search for its prize with clues given over social media or its App, featuring luxurious goods and priceless experiences.
The chest is currently on tour visiting the nation’s largest cities and attending major events in each. Along the way, Social Hunt President Steve Stein is meeting with additional celebrities with the chest. At the conclusion of the tour, the chest will be buried and then the hunt for its treasure will commence. The chest itself is autographed by over 90 celebrities including Dolly Parton, Jay Leno, Ryan Seacrest, P!nk, Renee Zellweger, George Clooney and Kevin Spacey amongst others. The chest contains a treasure trove of goods ranging from roundtrip airfares to ultimate Hollywood experiences like a trip to a recording studio with a top producer to a small part on your favorite TV show. Designed with the winner in mind, the prize pack will be customized to suit his or hers wants and desires. Participants will be given 30 clues through corporate clue sponsors or the Social Hunt App, available for purchase in the Apple App Store and on Google Play, and each clue will bring participants closer to locating the chest. Once its contents are unearthed participants should expect to find 36 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
the chest along with an envelope with roundtrip airfare to Los Angeles. From there, the winner will be greeted with a massive, star-studded red carpet event in Hollywood during which time all prizes will be revealed. The hunt for the chest, originally conceived by President of celebrity talent Services Company Product Hollywood’s Steve Stein when he was brought in to assist with a Tsunami charity fundraiser event in 2005. During the event, Stein had every celebrity in attendance sign it with the hopes of donating it to charity. However, when no organization would take it, the chest wound up sitting in his office and later in his garage. For Stein, he noticed that with each tragedy akin to the tsunami, people would unite together for a short period of time, then tragedy disappeared from public consciousness. He yearned to find a way to reach out to individuals affected, but seemingly forgotten. Then one day when combing through his garage, he came across the chest and had the idea for the Social Hunt quest. Part of the proceeds raised from sponsors and the Social Hunt App, available for purchase in the Apple App Store and on Google Play that enables you additional clues on your quest for the treasure, go towards The Social Hunt Foundation, created to help victims of tragedy rebuild their lives.

REBEL HEIRESS Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin
B
By Nate Goehring
etween her chart topping music career, her eagerly anticipated HSN jewelry line this fall, and her entrepreneurial and charitable pursuits, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin is keeping herself busy. “Three careers,” she sighs, “In a million years I would never have anticipated that at this exact moment everything would be working together at the same time.” With the release of her new album I’m Just Me earlier this year, Consuelo found success in the international markets of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the UK. Her latest single, “Lose My Mind,” landed on the Billboard charts in Germany, where Consuelo recently performed for thousands of fans on the popular local entertainment TV show, ZDF Fernsehgarten. It was a career highlight, matched in Consuelo’s mind only by her shows at Capital Pride, the annual LGBTA celebrations in Washington DC, where 250,000 festival-goers cheered her music. “Those were the two most impactful shows,” she explains. “I’ve never felt such warmth and love.” In 2011 Consuelo founded her own record label, C&R. She has pulled off the ideal situation: she owns her master recordings, maintaining creative
40 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
control, but she also gets major distribution via H’ART Music in Germany. It was Sanctuary producer John Williams who signed Consuelo after hearing her first single, “Let Love Wash Over Me.” Williams had already produced talents like The Housemartins, The Proclaimers and Debbie Harry by the time Consuelo found herself in the studio with him. “It took me a long time to get there,” Consuelo says with humility. She always loved to sing and entertain, but it took the experience of a brutal car crash at age 19 for her to decide that the career of professional musician was something she wanted to pursue. From that point on, the woman Prestige Magazine dubbed “the rebel heiress” became determined to carve her own identity. She collaborated with her manager, Christian Seidal, who encouraged her to spend hours writing her own material; she honed her musical technique; and she laid the groundwork for her label and international success. With so much happening in her career as musician, it is admirable when you understand that Consuelo has also found time to prepare the launch of two business prospects in the next six months. The first is an affordable
jewelry line she is designing for HSN that will launch this this fall. The second is Consuelo’s project that she is working on with Umi McGuckin, Soho Muse Inc., a professional networking site geared toward creative types in a variety of fields—like LinkedIn but specifically for painters, photographers, musicians, and other creative careers. Following in her family’s footsteps by celebrating America through entrepreneurship, Consuelo has designed a 25-piece collection of affordable items inspired by the classic beauty of her great grandmother Consuelo Vanderbilt Earl’s wedding ring. “I wanted to pay tribute to the marvelous Vanderbilt jewelry of the past century by recreating pieces that reflect the timeless elegance of the Gilded Age,” she declares. Consuelo’s family history is full of such elegance. For instance, the Duchess of Marlboro, her distant relative, was known for wearing only a single strand of pearls up until the day she was married, and that became a family tradition where Consuelo and all of her sisters inherited similar strands. “To be able to put visuals to the pieces—to see pictures of mom wearing pearls—really brought everything to life,” says the rebel heiress intent on creating designs that will honor her esteemed heritage. “The entire process was a great experience.” The collection of pearl and diamond jewelry, a synthesis of old and modern, will be called Homage and will debut on HSN this fall. Meanwhile, Consuelo is closing her last rounds of funding for Soho Muse, Inc., her concept of a “trusted source for creative people.” The site will soon go live and provide “a way for artists to showcase themselves powerfully in a global environment.” Consuelo is confident about her niche, declaring, “There is nothing else out there right now like this.” Soho Muse will launch in February of next year. Finally, in between performing tour dates and launching businesses, Consuelo gives back through her involvement with philanthropic organizations that are close to her heart. She currently serves on the board of the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater California, where she dedicates her time to educating women and helping to find a cure for the disease. Consuelo is also affiliated with the American Heart Association, and the YMCA has recently approached her about a speaking engagement in light of her ancestor Cornelius’ previous generosity towards the group when he built them a house in the 1800s. costinmusic.com

PONQUOGUE POINT New Condos in Southampton By Nate Goehring Water Views Smart buyers who don’t want the burden of traditional home ownership are talking about Ponquogue Point in Hampton Bays. This new luxury waterfront community comprised of 24 condominiums is within walking distance of Ponquogue Beach, which rivals the beauty of any sandy stretch on the East End. It was designed by award-winning architect Bernard Zyscovich. With its lock and leave ease and a price point that’s gentler than the multimillion dollar options 15 minutes east in the Village of Southampton, sophisticated buyers are looking at these properties and boat owners are already clamoring for one of the 15 slips available in what will be their backyard. Mabley Handler Interior Design “Ponguogue Point is offering a very unique opportunity for buyers,” explained Hamptons interior decorator Jennifer Mabley, founder of Mabley Handler Interior Design based in Water Mill. She and her husband Austin Handler 44 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
are two of the visionaries behind this new private, three-acre waterfront development in Hampton Bays. The 24 unique townhomes were inspired by an 18th Century New England coastal manor. “The developers wanted to collaborate with a design firm that specialized in the Hamptons, and our style represents an appealing yet approachable aesthetic that many people are looking for.” Together they have transformed two of the luxury units, which range in size from one to three bedrooms, into picture perfect homes in the gated community that will be unveiled over the Fourth of July Weekend. “The décor in the model homes are transitional and furnishings are a combination of mid-century and modern,” explained Mabley, “There is a clean, contemporary feel to these offerings. This alleviated being trapped in a specific era. For the smaller unit we wanted a fresh, coastal feel with a sophisticated nautical flair and for the larger we introduced a yacht aesthetic, with dual wood paneling and two-toned decking inspired floors.” Explained Mabley.
SOUTHAMPTON
The New Montauk Until the Great Hurricane of 1938, which created the Shinnecock Inlet, Southampton Village and Hampton Bays was one landmass; today they are connected by 27 East. NYC police commissioner William Bratton and his wife attorney Rikki Klieman, New York Post columnist Richard Johnson and Lord and Lady Liliana Cavendish are just a few of the cognoscenti who have homes in Hampton Bays. This quiet hamlet in the Town of Southampton is being called the new Montauk, Brooklyn and SoHo. The area is dotted with quaint farmsteads and classic restaurants like Cowfish and Rhumba. Also located here is Cor-J, the legendary seafood store; people still travel to and from Easthampton to pick up fish fresh off the boat. This area remains refreshingly casual yet it’s close enough to the social scene in Southampton to let you hit the party circuit. Ponquogue Beach “When someone signs a contract to purchase a home, we lead them through the entire process and customization of each unit,” said Mabley. “The colors, the built-ins and storage options, custom kitchens and baths,
and all the beautiful finishes one could want. Our goal is to help them create their dream home. It is very gratifying to see a project through from beginning to end,” adding, “Each of the designs has it’s own distinctive style, with water views and outdoor spaces, gardens, and multiple decks,” explained Mabley. “We are there to guide the buyer, which makes the process much easier.” Both of the fully decorated model homes are available for purchase and Mabley Handler will have offices on the site. mableyhandler.com The new residences also offer variety of high-end amenities, including concierge service, a resort style pool, boat launch facilities, a 300-foot dock, all within walking distance to the beach. There are a wide variety of options for watersports, fishing and boating enthusiasts from Great Peconic Bay, Tiana Bay, Flanders Bay, Shinnecock Bay, and the ocean of Ponquogue Beach “Today Hampton Bays is undergoing an evolution,” concluded Handler, “coming into its own and becoming a distinct destination in the Hamptons. Our goal in Ponquogue Point is to create upscale living in the area.”

BACK TO SCHOOL SNACKS Easy Ways to Get Your Kids to Eat Healthfully By: Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD, CDN
I
t’s “Back to School” time which means lots of parents are contacting me for suggestions on what to pack in their little ones’ snack bags. Since I know this is a topic front and center on the minds of many mommy and daddies, I figured I would compile a list. Like I recommend for the older folk, a nutritious and satiating snack should consist of a high fiber carbohydrate paired with a lean protein source. Check out the following list for some ideas: 1. Sliced apple + 1-2 tablespoons natural peanut butter for dipping 2. Kashi whole grain crackers + 1 mini Babybel cheese 3. Pop chips 4. Mary’s Gone Crackers + 2 tablespoons natural hummus for dipping 5. Horizon Super Squeezes (milk and fruit blends) 6. Annie’s organic cheddar bunnies 7. 17-20 grapes + 1 part-skim mozzarella string cheese 8. Turkey and cheese roll-ups 9. Low-fat Greek yogurt + ¼ cup low-sugar granola 10. Individual low-fat cottage cheese + 1-2 clementines 11. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich made on 1-2 slices of whole grain bread 12. 2 hard-boiled eggs + sliced bell pepper 13. Sliced celery + 2 tablespoons natural almond butter 14. 1/3 cup trail mix (made with dried fruit and nuts only) 15. Raw vegetables + 2 tablespoons bean dip 16. JACKIE ROGERS
Brings a Taste of Haute Couture to the Hamptons
J
By Salome Langvin
ackie Rogers, the well-known fashion designer who over the years has stayed relevant with her chic, innovative designs, is bringing her bold style to the Hamptons for the first time this summer 2015. Located on the ultra-exclusive Jobs Lane, Jackie Rogers is able to offer styling to her a-list clientele while they are visiting their vacation homes in the South Fork. Within the store, her signature dresses, blazers and jumpsuits line the racks which cover the perimeter of her boutique, each of which are color coordinated and paired with the different materials she utilizes. She frequently makes gorgeous designs with silk satin-faced organza, which is notoriously difficult to work with, to create beautifully tiered ball gowns and jumpsuits. In honor of her Hamptons location, she has a rack of clothing entirely dedicated to her Gin Lane Collection. The collection fuses the luxurious flare of her elegant designs with the humble seersucker fabric that when combined together make beautiful blazers and dresses. On the walls are large photographs of Jackie from her various adventures throughout her illustrious life. From gallivanting across Europe with royalty

to movie stills from her role Fellini’s 1963 classic movie 8 ½ to her shots in a serpent hat designed by Bill Blass, Jackie Rogers can indulge you on all the details of the various escapades depicted in these photographs. Though the Hamptons season reaches its unofficial end on Labor Day, Jackie Rogers will continue to fit her elite clientele in her signature pieces. Jackie Rogers’ couture collections have been dressing the world's most powerful men & women for decades. She began her fashion design career working in menswear at the advisement of her mentor, Fashion Legend Coco Chanel, with her own boutique on Madison Avenue. The store became a men’s club, with movie star Jack Nicholson and Philanthropist Winthrop Rockefeller amongst her clientele. In the 1970s, she began designing womenswear and launched her boutique in Palm Beach, Florida on Worth Avenue. Along with her Southampton and Palm Beach boutiques, her designs are available by appointment at her Manhattan showroom, online on her website and at fine retailers everywhere. jackierogers.com

BEYOND THE HORIZON Oceans, Lakes and Rivera By Rory Winston Photos by Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images “All my life I’ve wanted to know what was beyond the horizon,” said the familiar voice – one whose relentless questions had forced an entire generation to look well beyond what appeared in plain sight, one whose dynamic range but soothing tone had accompanied me since childhood. It was this voice that had shaken my convictions as it informed me how Elvis had died not merely of a heart attack but as a result of long-term drug abuse; this voice that mourned with me the week John Lennon was murdered; this voice that brought attention to the neglect and abuse perpetrated by state run psychiatric institutions; and the same voice that intrepidly reported from Afghanistan just months after 9/11. The insistent voice behind what has by now become a trademark mustache belongs to none other than Geraldo Rivera. Rivera and his unapologetic mustache first graced our TV screens in the dawn of the 70’s. The young lawyer – and onetime investigator in the NYPD – had no sooner embarked upon his legal career than he began to pique the interest of execs at WABC-TV. While speaking on behalf of the Young Lords, a Puerto Rican activist group, Rivera was spotted. Perspicacious and articulate, Rivera, they noticed, was able to explain the group’s recent actions better than anyone else. Besides which, to the new generation of media savvy producers, Rivera was New York incarnate. Rivera’s in-depth understanding of both his Puerto Rican and Jewish roots crossed the city’s cultural divides, defining him as a new kind of correspondent – one who was both insider and outsider to any given group. A paradigm shift was taking place in terms of investigative reporting and Rivera was at the forefront. He had what we refer to today as ‘street cred,’ his brand of impassioned reporting making viewers empathize with otherwise remote subjects. Instead of declaiming, he confided. Well in advance of the zeitgeist that applauded idiosyncratic documentary filmmakers such as Errol Morris, Rivera had the knack for fusing erudite observations with an informal tone, making complex sociopolitical questions accessible to all.

Channel Crossing Years before Welcome Back Kotter delighted audiences with Juan Epstein’s mixed ethnicity (or Gabriel Kaplan’s mustache for that matter), Rivera was already out there. And he was taking on issues that mattered. From Eyewitness News where he won a Peabody Award for reporting on the abuses to which mental patients were subject (at Staten Island’s Willowbrook State School) to his appearances on 20/20 and Nightline to hosting Good Morning America to having his very own show, Geraldo, Rivera continuously managed to bring passion, integrity and a thirst for uncovering the truth to everything he touched. It is his need to not only inform but to catalyze change that still pervades his present programs such as Geraldo at Large on Fox News Channel and the Geraldo Show on WABC radio. While mustaches had gone from being trendy to looking dated to making a comeback with hipsters, Rivera’s own appearance – like his principles – remain in tact, at times popular, at times falling out of favor but genuine throughout. At the Helm When Rivera states that he has always had a keen desire to know what’s beyond the horizon, it is clear that he means this literally as much as he does figuratively. As a man with a lifelong interest in sailing, witnessing different cultures and environments firsthand is an integral part of his persona. “I’ve always wanted to travel,” Rivera explains. “This desire informs my whole being. It gives me a keen sense of who I am: a pathfinder, an adventurer…To go to the far corners of the planet, to reach the four corners of our great country, to go everywhere, really. It’s a longing I’ve always had. I went up on the Amazon River - all 1600 miles by boat …I went around the entire world with my boat. It was just something I had to do.” Rivera’s warm but highly focused gaze takes in the scene. It is as easy to imagine him standing at the helm of a ship watching a gathering storm with his crew as it is imagining him standing with a TV crew, helming a documentary about the political storm surrounding an impeachable president. There is a constant sense of urgency to Rivera’s demeanor. “I visited 140 countries,” he announces while giving way to a smile. Then expanding on the thought, “it’s been a kind of a driving force in my life.” I am reminded of Rivera’s millennial travel series - the two one hour specials made between 1997 and the year 2000 where he and his immediate family took the audience along on their Sail to the Century journey. Though there is presently no school of dolphins accompanying him and no Egyptian navy chasing him across the Red Sea, an undetectable wind still runs through his hair, the sun’s glare forever bright enough to make him squint a bit as he sharpens his focus. September 2015 | 71

25A “Of course, traveling affects my professional acumen,” he responds unequivocally. “When I speak of places like Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East or Latin America…I’ve been there. I’ve seen what’s going with my own eyes - how people live, who these people are. It’s not just vague theory. There’s a credibility born of empirical knowledge.” Setting sail Rivera has always been a man on a mission. “Make no mistake,” he explains, “my whole reason for going into investigative journalism as a career wasn’t simply to report but to effect change.” “One of my early ambitions was to use my leverage to change what it is that bothers me. Take the Willowbrook story I did back in the 70’s. The cause is still a big part my life. It was the charity I worked for while on The Apprentice…I’m still totally engaged. What I saw there as a young man with these big institutions where they were warehousing people who had very different disabilities…where they were piled one on top of the other with no real humane care, no chance at education, no chance at realizing their human potential, well, I saw that and that bothered me and what I did was not just complain about it but I tried to find a solution. That remains my essential approach to investigative journalism. It’s easy to just kvetch about something. And I feel you have no right to complain about anything that you’re not actively doing something about fixing.” When asked about his level of discomfort as it relates to his old friend Donald Trump being in a feud of sorts with his colleague Megyn Kelly, Rivera is nonplussed: “Megyn’s a big girl. She can take care of herself. I wouldn’t bet against either one of them in a fight. These flamboyant episodes with Donald don’t faze me. What is more disturbing is Donald’s harshness towards immigrants for example. That irks me a lot. His statement about undocumented immigrants being drug dealers and rapists is preposterous
72 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
and very unfortunate. As much as I love the guy, many of his ideas are anathema to me. I hope he moderates his position. I mean Donald can get elected, you know. Luckily, the office of President usually has a humbling effect.” The Voice behind the Mustache In response to whether he feels like the odd man out at Fox, Rivera is quick to note, “While my ideology, philosophy and politics don’t agree with most at Fox, they allow me to be me and I’m proud to be associated with them.” The adding with a smile, “In fact I just renewed my deal for 2 more years so I’ll probably die at the job.” “Seriously, if you ask anyone who’s seen me over the last 45 years, I really haven’t changed all that much. My main role at Fox is as senior correspondent. El Chapo digs his way out of prison, I’m sent down there to cover it. Besides doing politics from Monday to Friday at 5pm, I’m also on O’Reilly, Fox and Friends and I still do radio from 10am to 12pm on WABC. Radio allows me to expand on ideas in depth rather than the usual 5 minutes allotted by TV.” “What do I usually talk about…?” Taking my uninformed query about his radio show in stride Geraldo said, “Well, today for instance I talked about the fact that Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Donald Trump are all respectively 69 years old… and Hillary Clinton is just 67; and people talk about her being an old hag, senior citizen and all the rest. Unlike the guys, she is subject to harsh jibes for her age. Then this issue led me to the Viagra for Women issue and how it might effect female sexuality etc.” As Rivera rose and shook my hand, I had the distinct impression he was about to embark on yet another journey. Sensing my trepidation, he told me on parting that he had actually taken his boat from Edgewater this morning and moored it on 79th street from where he would be riding his bike home. Boats, bikes, walking the city on foot… needless to say, Rivera does not disappoint. No taxis or town cars for the seafaring cosmopolitan who rides through our world in search of ever-new horizons.

KING’S COUNTY IMPERIAL East Meets West in Williamsburg
I
By Matthew Rosenberg
n recent decades, it seems as if every corner in Brooklyn has been swept by demographic change. Just ask Josh Grinker and Tracy Jane Young, the dynamic duo behind Kings County Imperial, a Sichuanstyle Chinese eatery in Williamsburg. Don’t let their names fool you; the team delivers an authentic central Chinese cuisine in the heart of the borough. Having spent years traveling through China, the couple boasts an intimate relationship with the country’s cooking. In fact, the restaurant grows traditional herbs, greens, and spices, in its very own garden. An integral piece of Chinese cuisine, soy sauce is also home-crafted at the restaurant. Kings County Imperial puts Chinese take-out to shame. Adorned with brilliant hues of green and red, the interior dining area is inspired by the aesthetic grace of old-world China. Heartening images of Chinese landscapes abound about the restaurant, bringing to mind a time-honored, folksy existence. The walls are lavishly crossed with intricate latticework, crowned with laser-etched embellishments. The second dining area, set in the back of the restaurant and saturated with light, masterfully resembles the skeleton of a classic Chinese cargo vessel. Want something to smack your lips over? Try the succulent Sichuan duck. Elegantly seasoned and marinated, the dish is alive with tangy flavor. The Dan Dan noodles, with its zesty addition of pungent herbs will certainly

grab your attention, as well. If your tongue is feeling a bit numb from the peppery excitement, make sure to order the coconut tapioca pudding. Topped with freshly picked goji berries, the treat is a toothsome, all-natural way to end a fine night out. If you’re feeling spirits, Kings County Imperial offers an eye-popping variety of tiki-style cocktails to complement its red-hot menu. Drinks include Buddha’s Hand; made with gin, lemon squeeze, honey syrup, and an in-house pineapple liqueur; and the Imperial Mai-Tai, brewed with aged rum, rye whiskey, lime, orgeat juice, orange curacao syrup, and mint. The restaurant features a myriad of focused wines and draft beers. Grinker and Young have fashioned their love of Chinese cooking and culture into Kings County Imperial. Duly, the restaurant is redefining what we understand as Chinese food. From its sumptuous culinary fare, to its elaborate interior design, the restaurant is sure to blow you away with its novel approaches to Chinese cuisine. 20 Skillman Ave Brooklyn, NY 11211 718.610.2000 kingscountyimperial.com

ounded by retired basketball legend Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse is a fine-dining restaurant situated in one of New York’s most celebrated architectural landmarks, Grand Central Terminal. Renowned for its whopping selection of mouthwatering steaks, savory seafood and American classics, the restaurant has received praise from Esquire, Forbes, New York Post, The Today Show, and Martha Stewart Living. From its flavorsome dishes to its elaborate décor, the eatery rebounds with the NBA superstar’s unique sense of style and taste. Designed by reputed architect David Rockwell, the restaurant features an angular layout that is reminiscent of a luxury railroad car. Located on the grand balcony of the terminal, Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse captures a dazzling panorama of the historic structure, with special views of its embellished framework, skyscraping clock and sapphire-blue ceiling. Surprisingly, Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse features not a single token of Jordan’s athletic acclaim. Rather, in its cosmopolitan outline, the restaurant focuses on “Michael Jordan the businessman.” With two private dining rooms stretching across the northern balcony, and two adjacent special event spaces, Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse offers its patrons versatile dining arrangements. In recognition of its sophisticated configuration, the steakhouse was awarded Best Restaurant Design by Interior Design Magazine. The restaurant’s blue-ribbon menu and top-drawer selection of wines and spirits, ranks it among the finest steakhouses in the New York City area.

Once September arrives, people switch gears to fall, which brings a new season of delicious fruit – mainly, apples. On Long Island, apple picking season runs through late October, so September is a great time to visit local apple orchards. The Hamptons provides wonderful places to go apple picking, such as the Milk Pail Orchard, Seven Ponds Orchard, or Hank’s Pumpkintown. Before going apple picking, it’s good to have a plan, since not all apples are created equal. Some are good for cooking, while others are best eaten fresh. Granny smith and golden delicious are best for baking, while Macintosh and red delicious work best for eating raw/juicing. There are many other types of apples, but these are the easiest to find. The expression “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is still used for a reason; apples are extremely healthy – they’re a great source of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and rich in antioxidants. The skin of the apple contains a majority of the nutrients, so you ideally want to choose organic apples to avoid pesticide residue.
Once you have the apples, what do you do with them? To start, they’re delicious in salad, adding crunch and sweetness to dishes such as baby arugula, walnuts and blue cheese, or spinach, cashews and prosciutto. You can also shave apples with cabbage and make a fresh vegan slaw.
you can use apple juice as a cocktail base with cinnamon vodka, infuse spring water with apple slices, or create hot apple cider for the first crisp night of fall.
Making a savory dish in the fall, such as chicken, turkey, beef, ham, or pork? Sweet, yet tart, apple chutney partners perfectly with it all. It’s made from apples, brown sugar, vinegar, onions, herbs and spices and complements the heartiness of fall dishes.
Apple cider is a major celebrity craze – Heidi Klum, Fergie and Scarlet Johansson swear by it, saying it cleanses your body, helps with weight loss and creates a glowing complexion. The best apple cider is organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized, but can be expensive and hard to find. Fortunately, it’s easy to make so you can reap the health benefits, as well!
In dessert form, apples are perfect for making cheesecake, pudding parfaits, cookies, cakes, pies, or crisps. For a healthier treat, bake the apple and stuff it with oats, brown sugar and berries. Additionally,
With fall weather approaching, now is the perfect time to head to your local orchard and start enjoying the benefits and delicious taste of fall’s favorite fruit.

Doug Cohen & Justin Aronoff
THE BOYS ARE BACK!
D
By Nikita Coelho, Melissa Rose & Sara Sherman
oug Cohen and Justin Aronoff met each other in 2013 while working as butchers in the now closed Meathouse on Northern Blvd in Roslyn. They clicked immediately and saw in each other a suitable partner for their future dreams. The opportunity to work together presented itself when it was announced that the Meathouse would be closing. The boys, operating as Center Cuts, Inc., rented the old Primetime Butcher Shop space at 382 Willis Ave. in Roslyn Heights (across from the CVS-Starbucks strip mall). While spending time at the store in order to write this article, I was made aware of the fact Doug and Justin knew many of their customers by name and the customers also knew their names. This surprised me because I am not familiar with any of my neighborhood merchants by name.
86 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
One customer, Debra S. insisted on telling me that, "if it weren't for Center Cuts, my three kids would never eat meat!! She said, "The Maple Bourbon steak tips and teriyaki skirt steak are a staple in her home". Another gentleman chimed in to rave about the Kobe beef that he had purchased over the weekend. He then said "Life is too short to not treat yourself, sometimes." The two boys completely renovated the store, doing much of the work themselves. They have created a space that is bright, immaculate and has a New York City vibe. Just recently they started working with a well-known nutritionist that lives in the area. In order to accommodate her clients, they will be preparing foods without oil.
Upon entering the store, I was overwhelmed with the aroma of warm apple strudel. The meats were displayed beautifully; the employees all had a smile on their face. These two young men are really doing things the right way. A young lady who was in the store at the time insisted upon telling me about a holiday the boys had catered for her. "The brisket melted in my mouth, and everything on the table was absolutely delicious. I was able to have an amazing holiday with my family without lifting a finger! Doug said, "Our goal is to take the stress out of making dinner every night. We offer plenty of pre-marinated meats & chicken breasts as well as a large variety of hot foods, prepared side dishes and salads to go. We also offer vegetarian options daily. We can prepare and cook your meal and deliver it right to your home. We cater parties all over the island, and come prepared with a chef, servers, and even a grill if you need one. This weekend we will
grill in Westhampton for approximately 150 people at a fundraiser for the Delete Blood Cancer charity. While speaking with Justin I asked him a simple question. “What has been your most satisfying experience since opening your business?” He replied, “Obviously going to work each day for myself is the most satisfying, however during last Thanksgiving a local business owner had us deliver about thirty turkeys that he gifted to all of his employees. It was such a great feeling to know that we helped to make so many Thanksgiving dinners special. I’ll never forget that.” I've read other reviews from Newsday and other local papers raving about these two young men, and now I understand why. One customer really said it best, "Tell your readers to stop by, and they will be very happily surprised."

Courtyard Entrance to the Rosewood Hotel
A SENSE OF PLACE The Rosewood Hotel London By Joe Alexander High Holborn The most sophisticated new hotel in London is the Rosewood, which is centrally nestled into the celebrated West End of London at 252 High Holborn. The hotel is a favorite of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, John Mayer, Elizabeth Hurley, international high society and the royals who all appreciate the privacy afforded by the hotel’s spacious courtyard. This hushed sanctuary is set back from the hustle and bustle of the city and is accessible only to guests and their vehicles conveniently leaving the pesky paparazzi literally at the gate. The first thing you notice as your Rolls Royce slips through the Rosewood’s majestic, domed carriage entrance is the historic character of this Belle Époque building designed and completed in 1914 by H. Percy Monckton. The principal façades of these buildings are all protected heritage sites with Listed Building status. This preservation work personifies the Rosewood Hotels & Resort’s core philosophy that each of their properties including The Carlyle in New York, the Rosewood Abu Dhabi, Jumby Bay in 96 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
Antigua and the Rosewood Beijing in China all reflect “A Sense of Place®”. rosewoodhotels.com The Grand Manor House Wing The restoration of this historically rich property was overseen by the English Heritage Coalition to help assure the integrity of the site’s Banking Halls and the Rosewood’s seven-story marble staircase was maintained. This architectural tour de force made from seven different types of marble, some of which can no longer be found anywhere else in the world, ascends from either side of the entrance on High Holborn and rises through all the floors under a dramatic elliptical dome that rises to 166 feet. Its current value is estimated to be about $60 million dollars. The enchanting result is that the Rosewood has the ambience of a stylish London residence. There are 262 perfectly appointed guestrooms and 44 suites that offer unparalleled privacy, warmth, quality and, dare I say it, nobility. Because

this is a repurposed and landmarked building, all the rooms have charming and surprising spaces that make you feel like you are in an elegant private home or flat. The Rosewood’s eight signature ‘house’ suites are among London’s grandest and most spacious. My favorite is the Grand Manor House Wing, the only suite in the world to have its very own postcode. It also boasts its own private entrance on High Holborn as well as a private elevator. This “house” reeks with Old World Charm yet has all the state of the art technology one would expect in a contemporary house. Of course this six-bedroom sweet suite with a terrace and wood-burning fireplace comes with a price, $30K per night, which is not a concern for the princes and moguls who call this their “home away from home.” Scarfes Bar One of London’s chicest destinations is Scarfes Bar. This fun pub located in the Rosewood is named after the renowned British caricaturist Gerald Scarfe, who lent his ideas to the bar’s whimsical design. A number of Scarfe’s most amusing and conversational drawings, including those of Queen Elizabeth and the Beatles, dot the marble walls. He also created a living
canvas where the entertaining ‘artfully current’ corner is regularly updated to keep patrons abreast of current affairs. Designed by interior designer Martin Brudnizki, Scarfes evokes a hospitable ambiance complete with a roaring fire at one end and wooden bar running along the other. Over 1,000 antique books line the shelves throughout Scarfes, giving the space the charm of a private English Library. There is a wide assortment of chairs to be found here, which adds an artful glamour to the room. I liked the 1870 lollipop rocking chair from New York, the 1950’s cocktail chairs and the bar stools which were inspired by an Edwardian arm chair, all a perfect place to perch and have a glass of champagne before heading out to the theater. Across the hotel’s courtyard is The Holborn Dining Room, which brings a young vibrant brasserie atmosphere to the historic quality of the space. The menu by Executive Chef Amandine Chaignot is a gourmand’s delight. Try the butter chicken or the Tawa Machli and finish with the poached Yorkshire Rhubarb or a Holborn Black Forest Coupe.

ESCAPE TO MIAMI Glamour Awaits
I
By Gwen Wunderlich-Smith
f it’s been a while since you’ve taken a trip to Miami do yourself a favor and book a flight as soon as possible. With a sun kissed tan, the lingering smell of Ban a Solei and unforgettable memories of late night fete’s we sit back and reflect on our most recent adventure.
bedding for a good night's sleep. Lavish toiletries for a luxurious bath. And a fully-stocked minibar catering to your every craving. A wave of relaxation flows through the Blue Room (where we stayed), providing the perfect blend of tranquility and comfort.
In the heart of South Beach, where palms sway as waves roll gently ashore under luminous skies, we were able to experience the new and still true essence of Miami. Reinventing itself and becoming more luxurious than ever, our Miami getaway began at the Sense Beach House.
We suggest dining at the hotel’s restaurant, the Local House, known for serving up oyster martinis and some of the city’s best ceviche. Make sure you’re seated on the veranda for a view worth mentioning.
Upon check in, The Sense Beach House gives off a Montauk meets Malibu, surfer gypsy vibe. Rather than featuring the typical décor associated with South Beach, sleek, stark white with accents in contrasting color, Sense Beach House creates a comfortable, artsy and sophisticated atmosphere with warm neutrals, soft blues, sand tones and reclaimed wood floors and furnishings. The boutique hotel is located on 4th street and Ocean Drive, nestled in the upscale South of Fifth (“so-fi”) district. Walking distance from the best restaurants, shops, nightclubs and beaches the area has to offer. The rooms are designed for privacy and comfort in mind and the spacious rooms offer a relaxed ambiance with an array of thoughtful details. Plush 98 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
After lunch at Local House, we left the beach and headed over to Wynwood. One of the city's newest and trendiest neighborhoods, factories and warehouses line the streets and are now inhabited by creative types, more than 50 galleries, artist's studios, art complexes, private collections and museums – many of which we toured. The street art is what is really fascinating here. Pieces that are worth millions are there for all to see and admire, yet never to purchase. If you go at night, check out the local haunt Naked Taco, which you didn’t hear from us, but has a secret door that opens into a sultry lounge. We spent the night dancing and sipping away on The Devil’s Daughter which is a daring blend of tequila, mint, lime and prosecco.
Royal Palm South Beach
Edition Hotel For the second half of our trip, we went a bit “James Bond”. Offering direct beach and Miami boardwalk access, immersed in luxury retail on Collins Ave. and only blocks from Lincoln Rd. and Espanola Way sits the new The Royal Palm South Beach. The hotel’s vintage and eclectic aesthetic, from the palm-lined and fountain-filled entrance to its midcentury décor, fits in perfectly with the area’s mix of glamour and beach. With reclaimed materials and original glass in many areas, antiquity is reimagined with contemporary style. Light and airy rooms are fashioned from chaste whites, with touches of calm greens and sophisticated wood furniture. Our all white ocean front rooms offered us a dazzling display of beachfront happiness. The resort boasts countless amenities including two swimming pools, a plunge pool, poolside bar, The Pool and Beach Experience, a lobby lounge, a coffee bar, Privai Wellness + Spa – a full-service spa with salt-infused treatments, family offerings and play space for children, give: the shop – a retail shop offering carefully curated items, gift and sundries, and more than 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and event space. Be sure to stop by Byblos located in the hotel that has a menu of coastal and cultural mosaic, served family style in a convivial atmosphere .The Royal Palm, overall, illustrates the mystic of South Beach, past and present and we loved every minute of it. If you have a few hours, take a walk straight down the boardwalk to the
Edition Hotel by Ian Schrager. Touted as the next generation urban resort, located in Mid-Beach—the historic “heart of Miami Beach” between South Beach and North Beach the Edition sits on a 3.5-acre private enclave stretching from Collins Avenue to the ocean shoreline. The “unlike anything you’ve ever seen before” décor is so intense that this drop dread gorgeous hotel evokes the deepest of senses. A custom scent permeates through the from the candy-colored ice skating ring to a bowling alley with balls designed by contemporary artists to a giant sandbox, private outdoor movie area with private teepes, cocktails in gold pineapples and an all white pool table you’ll be delighted in what you never knew you were missing. Every aspect of the traditional beach hotel has been re-imagined for the needs and desires of a new generation, and every thought given to enhancing a guest’s stay, whether for vacation, relaxation or work. Next trip, we’ll be sure to stay a night. Whether you have a few days or a few weeks, be sure to head back to Miami and head to the oasis of Sense Beach House, enjoy a stay at the Royal Palm and make way to the Edition all on the beach. SOUTHAMPTON INN Hamptons Hospitality for All Seasons
L
By Salome Langvin
abor Day marks the unofficial end of the Hamptons “summer season,” but there are many facets of a visit to Southampton yearround that provide an enjoyable break from the fast paced life in New York City. In the fall, the weather is beautiful and the air is crisp until late into October. In addition, the upside of fewer people being around is that events such as the Hamptons International Film Festival are more accessible and enjoyable. Southampton Inn remains the premier South Fork getaway all year long. Located in the heart of the historic Village of Southampton, the Inn supports numerous social, cultural and outdoor activities that it shares with its visitors. Enjoy your stay at the Southampton Inn throughout September and October where the weather in the Hamptons is ideal for a dip in the Inn’s 50-foot long heated pool open for guests through Columbus Day, and if the weather holds even longer. For guests preferring the beach they can enjoy the pristine beaches and warm ocean temperatures at nearby Cooper’s Beach, which no longer requires resident beach parking after Labor Day. In addition to beach activities, Local vineyard tours are both informative and enjoyable. Within walking distance of the Inn is Jobs Lane, a Southampton shopping destination where guests can enjoy end of season reductions.

For dining options, visitors can unwind over breakfast at award-winning, onsite Café Oso where Chef Peter Ammar delights guests with his renowned pancakes, which are served with Vermont maple syrup and Chantilly cream. For off-site dining, Southampton’s most famous year-round eateries are just steps away from the Inn and reservations are easier to acquire. As a business venue, the Southampton Inn offers a mid-week special for those booking extended days where the Hamptons environment helps enable fresh thinking to benefit their business. The ideal location for hosting a corporate retreat, the property has 6,000 square feet of flexible indoor meeting space that includes a newly renovated conference rooms and ballroom for events, complimentary Wi-Fi and is close to transportation to and from New York City and its area airports. The Inn’s conference rooms are great places to host audio visual equipment for key presentations, utilize as administrative offices, host executive meetings or hold larger seminars. Year-round, the Inn offers an exclusive food service for its corporate guests. At the end of the day, guests can retire to their well-appointed rooms that include Tempur-Pedic mattresses, Frette linens, Gilchrist & Soames toiletries and flat-screen televisions with more than 100 channels making the Inn feel like it is your home away from home. southamptoninn.com

MAROONED ON MUSIC Experience the Sziget Festival
O
By Rory Winston
n the Island. No, not this island. An island an ocean away. An island adrift between Buda and Pest, between east and west, between new artists and old ones. An island that in Hungarian is called simply, the Island. Dubbed the Island of Freedom, this island plays host to the annual international music festival called Sziget. With over 441,000 guests from 95 different countries and over 300 bands from well 50 different countries, the 7 day extravaganza has rightfully earned its place among the world’s most comprehensive music festivals. As Fred Durst, lead singer of Limp Biskit proclaimed on the main stage this year: "This place has the best energy we’ve felt anywhere in the last ten years." Boasting headliners like Robbie Williams, the Kings of Leon, Florence and the Machine, Paloma Faith, Tyler the Creator, Ellie Goulding, Marina and the Diamonds, Interpol, Major Lazar and Gogol Bordello to name just a few, the 24-hour showcases are not only a name-droppers paradise but a place in which to discover a menagerie of global talent both local and global. With everything from opera to folk to jazz to classical to world music, one would be hard put to find any whose preferences are not met. With an Artzone, designzone, sportzone, I ching Labiryth and a multitude of freestanding art structures reminiscent of Burning Man, there is a battery of non-music related activities in which to indulge. Celebrating its 15th birthday in the festival this year is Magic Mirror, Sziget’s queer program venue where a series of films, talks, cabarets and highly renowned performances were enough to entice Pussy Riot into coming

and joining the festivities. Visiting circuses, dance and theater companies… there are simply an endless battery of marquee events should one tire of the music. In addition to the myriad of ethnic fast food joints, gourmet kiosks, wine and cocktail bars and pubs, there is also a beach in which to cool off. Adding to the extraordinary feel of the place is the fact that unlike many European festivals, the number of local youths is on par with the number of those visiting. And much to my own relief, local youth come to dance, drink and socialize rather than to get wasted or sloshed. Though the atmosphere is very relaxed, one quickly notes that there are few if any people selling or using drugs while the partying atmosphere is highly pervasive and charged with hormones. Although there is a large camping site for tents, public transportation was available in and out of the city on a 24-hour basis and, yes, mobile phones seemed to work at all times no matter how jam-packed the island got. “Coachella, Lollapalooza, Roskilde, Isle of Wight, Reeding and Leeds… you name it, I been there,” confided Michael a New Yorker I ran into on the third day, “and I swear to you, my man, I have never partied so thoroughly anywhere. This place totally rocks.” He was going to explain in more detail but, fortunately, an impatient Hungarian girl tugged at his arm insisting that they’ll miss her favorite band if they don’t hurry. As a minor nation state in its own right, Sziget Festival is one island where it’s worth getting stranded… well, at least once a year.

KAREN WHITMAN Wows with Her Prints
By Melissa Rose & Matthew Rosenberg
A
ward-winning printmaker and New York native, Karen Whitman, has loved art for as long as she could remember. Following her studies in etching and lithography at SUNY Buffalo, she took up the time-honored East Asian printing technique of woodblock printing. She sharpened her skills in the craft at the Woodstock School of Arts, where she made a habit of capturing the serene landscapes with paint. In 1992, she met fellow printmaker and reputed artist, Richard Pantell, whose words of praise and personal instruction have allowed Whitman to establish herself as an accomplished artist of multi-color and black and white linoleum block printing. 104 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
Now settled in the Catskills community and managing an art studio with her husband, Whitman invites anyone in the area to experience her pioneer gallery. Her latest exhibition, “Painting the Town, held from Aug. 8 - Sept. 20, 2015, expresses the day-to-day life of the other half, with special attention given to the workfolk that paint over the graffiti on buildings and billboards. Whereas the concept is rooted in the mundane existence of the toilers, the multi-colored, masterfully designed prints she creates are far from drab and attest to her mastery of the trade. With inspiration drawn from animated film and cartoons, her graphics couple wonder and mystery with iconic New York City markers, ranging from
towering bridges, kindling street lights, soot-saturated auto repair shops, and corner eateries where the door is always open. She ingeniously twists the scene to render New York City’s most thought of attributes into hazy, almost unrecognizable sights, setting her apart from other realist artists of the realist variety. Her daring and timeless objects d’art have been showcased at exhibits held not only in New York, but also Connecticut, New Jersey and Philadelphia.
Her intricate methods of design and complicated means of production demonstrate her dedication to the profession. Her hallmark of divine distortion in the presentation of images continues to leave gallery goers in awe. From the choreography of colors to the worlds it inspires, Whitman’s art is as dynamic as it is rapturous.

A PARTY AT KENSINGTON PALACE
A
By Victoria R. Crosby | Photos Courtesy of Historic Royal Palaces
s a board member of HRP, the Historic Royal Palaces in London, I was privileged to attend at gala fundraiser at Kensington Palace, a Summer Party at the Palace. The HRP group are a non profit organization that takes care of the palaces, so fundraising is always an important part of their role. Visitors, and items sold though the gift shops and websites, raise some of the funds. The party, attended by several Americans, began with a red carpet reception, with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres served in front of the palace, followed by a sumptuous dinner inside the large rooms of the palace. Guests in formal attire were greeted by re-enactors in costumes from the Georgian period, and they chatted to guests as though it was 106 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
several hundred years ago. I was asked my opinion on the colony of New Amsterdam, and what I thought about the French trying to purchase land in America. I was told “The Queen very much values your opinion.” The Queen at the time was Queen Caroline, and there was a little skit about her ladies in waiting dressing her. Lucy Worsley, author , television presenter and Head Curator at HRP greeted the guests, as did HRP Chairman Rupert Gavin. The three hundred guests included British celebrities, models and people from the entertainment industry, and American designer Tommy Hilfiger and his wife, handbag designer Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger, (they stayed at the same hotel where I stayed, the Corinthia, but we didn’t run into each other.)
Lucy Woolsey, Head Curator
Anya Kalamon, Constance Cincotta, Victoria Crosby, Herman Gugig at the after party
Patrons of HRP their Royal Highnesses, Prince Michael of Kent and Princess Michael of Kent were also among the guests. Prince Michael is first cousin to the Queen. I have been asked about why Princess Michael is not called by her own name of Marie, and it is because protocol dictates that she takes her husband’s name because she was not born a princess, but a Baroness. Diana’s title was not really Princess Diana, as everybody called her, but Diana, Princess of Wales, because although she was Lady Diana before her marriage, she was not born a princess. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge will one day be Catherine, Princess of Wales, not Princess Catherine. (But I am sure people will still call her Princess Catherine.) When everybody was seated in the dining rooms we were asked to rise for the prince and princess. Following the dinner and silent auction,

guests were led by ladies in lighted costumes from the palace to the Orangery, a short walk through the garden. The Orangery was originally a green house, built for Queen Anne in 1704, for the royal orange trees to survive the winter, but now it is an event space. After a spectacular fireworks display the after party was held there, with a DJ supplying popular music for dancing. Goody bags which included items from Estee Lauder and Jo Malone were distributed to the guests. The following day Nicky Hilton married James Rothschild in the Orangery.

SPLIA FUNDRAISER By Victoria R. Crosby
SPLIA, The Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities held a cocktail party at Ballybung, the home of Elizabeth (Liz) and Dr. James Watson, on the grounds of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory overlooking Cold Spring Harbor. Ballybung was designed by Centerbrook Architects and Planners inspired by 16th Century Palladian Villas of Italy, with touches of stylistic detailing of 19th Century English Regency and was built for the Watsons in 1994. Upstairs guests could view Dr Watson’s many medals including the Nobel prize in 1962 as the co-discoverer in 1953 of the DNA double helix. The medal had been sold at auction last December for $4 million, which Dr. Watson donated, as was his motive for selling, to several charities. Two of which are on Long Island, the North Shore Lane Alliance and Long Island Cares. The medal was purchased by Alisher Usmanov, a Russian billionaire, who very generously

donated the medal back to Dr. Watson when they met in St. Petersburg in June. In the Watson study there was also a gift on display from artist Dale Chihuly of a glass vase, with a personal note attached. At 87 Dr. Watson is still writing scientific papers, and still works at the lab in cancer research. Liz Watson said they named their home, Ballybung, because of Jim Watson's Irish family roots, and the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Company, where the labs are now, was known as Bungtown, a bung was the name of the stopper for a barrel. Jason Crowley, Preservation Director at SPLIA, and Executive Director, Alexandra Parsons Wolfe, welcomed guests and presented Dr. Watson and Liz with a painting of their home as a token of gratitude. | splia.org.

Mackage was founded in 1999 when Co-Creative Directors Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy created their first style; a modern double-breasted fitted coat that combined leather and wool into one design. Bradley Theodore is a prolific street artist known for many of his impressionistic murals depicting fashion icons.
