This area is the heart of our home thanks to the large industrial table teamed with stylish, low-hanging Tom Dixon pendant lights, a fig tree, and walls painted in a rich green.

I love mine and my daughter’s rooms, as they’re both colourful and cosy. The colour palette is very soft and welcoming, and I’ve upcycled all the furniture myself, which gives both rooms a nice personal touch.

WE’VE GOT MAIL ‘I was fed up with my boring under-stairs toilet, so I decided to give the room a bit of a revamp. I bought the logs wallpaper on eBay and the Austrian theme evolved from there – it’s our own little nod towards our skiing holidays. The decorating only took two days to finish and was as cheap as chips!’

‘The trick with retro decorating is to not stick to one era. I’ve mixed 1950s, 60s and 70s in my living room’
ABOUT ME I’m Sophie Crocket, 34, and I run Pineapple Retro, which sells original vintage homewares. I live with my partner Paul Barnes, 37, who works in IT, and our guinea pigs Ed and Dave. MY HOME A two-bedroom 1980s end-of-terrace with a conservatory extension in the New Forest. We bought it in October 2014.

WHEN I BOUGHT IT It was painted throughout in magnolia with very neutral carpets, dark brickwork in the conservatory, and peach and terracotta tiles in the kitchen. AND NOW We’ve painted the conservatory brickwork in white and brightened the rooms with favourite pieces, including my giant, purple velvet sofa. We turned the second bedroom into an office and built a studio in the garden to use as a showroom. STYLE TIP Mix old and new with confidence. Choose pieces that add colour, personality and humour, and don’t be afraid to use bright shades and patterns that clash – be brave! And surround yourself with pieces that make you smile.

T
here was a very simple reason for buying this house,’ says Sophie. ‘It was the only one that was big enough to fit my purple sofa into! I got the sofa before I’d even begun to view properties. But I had other requirements, too, and despite being plain, square and modern, this house fulfilled them all. I needed storage for my retro furniture and finds, so the garage was a huge bonus,
and I wanted a garden with space for a studio displaying my stock, and rear access for customers, although they usually arrive at the front door and walk through the living room and kitchen. This means that everywhere has to look good all the time, which isn’t difficult as I’ve been collecting vintage and retro pieces since I was a child. Having grown up with a grandma whose 1960s house was carpeted in peacock blue, and filled with furniture by G Plan or

Danish designers, I decided to recreate the interiors I’d loved since I was young.
Getting started After moving in, the first thing I did was to paint the brickwork in the conservatory. This immediately created more light, plus it provided a fabulous backdrop for my sideboard and coloured glass collection. Because my partner Paul and I both needed a place where we can work from
home, we decided to turn the second bedroom into an office. In order to make sure we had enough space and didn’t distract each other, we came up with the idea of having “his and hers” ends, each with our own feature wall. I painted mine in what I like to think of as “Kermit green” and Paul chose a bright yellow shade. When he moved in, Paul brought his Playmobil collection with him and I have my Lego one, so we’ve displayed those
in the office, too, along with a Formica desk each, to keep up the vintage vibe.
Making a compromise In some ways our tastes are similar, although we differ in others. Paul prefers wooden furniture, so we added a 1960s teak sideboard in the living room, and more pieces are gradually creeping in. Because we both work and don’t have a lot of time or money to change things

around, we’ve tried to live with what’s here already, therefore the main palette and personality in the house have had to come from the things we’ve put in it. I think that if you have a lot to look at, it makes your space feel more personal and I like the idea that as little of the decor is fixed to the walls, we can just move things around when we fancy a change. This is quite practical, as customers often spot items as they’re walking through the house and want to buy them, so it helps that I’m not too precious about many items!.
Open space Our plan is to change the whole kitchen one day, so we started by knocking out a window between the kitchen and the conservatory, because I felt it wasn’t serving any purpose at all and just getting in the way. First, I asked a builder friend to check that it wasn’t supporting anything and then decided to take the window out myself, with a hammer. I thought that if you put enough masking tape on the glass

pane, like people used to do during air raids, it would come out in one piece, but that isn’t true – it went everywhere! Weeks later I was still sweeping up bits of stray glass, although the effect on the two rooms was amazing and they both feel nicer now. I can now see my collection of Scandinavian and Italian glass. I’m a great believer in re-spraying items to give them a new personality. I have a huge array of colourful paints, which I use to freshen up lamp bases and bits of furniture, such as our bed, which was plain white before I gave it a whole new look by spraying it orange. I also have a giant fabric collection and use pieces from that to refresh things, making cushions or lampshades myself. The standard lamp in the sitting room is a great example of this – the fabric dates from the 1960s and the base is a 1950s one I bought recently in a car-boot sale for £5. Sometimes it’s hard to get enough vintage fabric for a decent set of big curtains (which we needed for our

Latest buys Although most of what I own is vintage, I do occasionally buy things new, such as the reproduction Eames Hang It All coat hooks on the stairs. It’s such a fun and iconic design, but I definitely don’t think I could afford an original! I also enjoy trawling through Ikea for stuff, because although they’re mass produced, some of the things on sale are real design classics. I have their Kallax shelving everywhere, even in my showroom – I think I paid about £150 for them all, and now, I reckon I could probably put them together in my sleep. They are definitely one of my best buys, along with the PS pendant lamp in the sitting room. It’s so amazing and unusual, no-one ever believes it came from Ikea.

Future plans At the moment, we’re saving up to change the kitchen, demolish the dividing wall between that room and the conservatory and make it feel more open-plan. Next on the list, we plan to knock down the wall between the staircase and the living room, to make that area feel more spacious. Until then, what I love most about my home is that I know I can change its look every day if I want to, just by moving things around. When people come to visit us, they sometimes ask us how many children we have, because it’s all so quirky and vibrant, but if you can get away with it, why not have circus posters and giant Lego in your living room? Open the lampshademaking kit – inside you should find two rings, a self-adhesive lampshade panel, double-sided tape and a lollipop tool. Cut your fabric to the dimensions shown and iron to remove any creases. Peel away the panel backing to 10cm and stick to the back of your fabric, unrolling as you go. Crease and peel off the edges along the sides and ends, then attach double-sided tape to one short edge.

Take both rings and wrap with the doublesided tape, pinching into the frames. Take off the top layer of tape. Place both rings at the end of the panel and carefully roll along the two long sides. Remove top layer of tape on the short edge, pressing the ends together. Fold the fabric in and tuck underneath the rings, using the lollipop tool for a neat finish.

ABOUT ME I’m Laurie Reay, 33, and I have a business called Ruby Summers Country Home, painting and restoring furniture. I live with my husband Ben, 35, a paramedic, and our three children Riley, 9, Ruby, 7, and Flinn, 4. MY HOME A three-bedroom Victorian mid-terrace house in Highbridge, Somerset, bought in June 2014. WHEN I BOUGHT IT The place felt dark and dingy. There were brown carpets everywhere, and garish, modern wallpapers. AND NOW We’ve painted every room and changed almost all the flooring. The scheme is mainly white, with dots of pretty pastels, so the house is full of light and seems much larger now. There’s a casual, country feel, with lots of upcycled furniture and unusual, one-off pieces. STYLE TIP Keep an eye out for old furniture that’s good quality, and paint it for a fresh look. Try to see beyond how it looks and imagine what you can do to give it a brand-new vibe.

A
lthough my husband Ben and I originally chose this house as a stop-gap, we’ve really settled in,’ says Laurie. ‘The area has good schools for our children Riley, Ruby and Flinn, and we’re near the beach, so it’s perfect. Before, we owned a two-bedroom house, but it became too small for us. We let it out, so we could rent a larger place for ourselves, but after three years, we sold our previous house and started searching for a new home. To find the space we needed on our budget, I knew we’d be looking for a “do-er upper”.
Period details I wanted a Victorian house because I love their spacious rooms, high ceilings and character. We looked at a few possibilities, but as soon as I walked into this place,
I felt sure it was the one. The decor wasn’t for me, but the layout was ideal and the original fireplaces and picture rails really appealed. There was a lot to do, though. The kitchen was quite basic but neutral, so we knew it could be updated easily, but the dark carpets, heavy colours and loud patterned wallpapers had to go.

Transformation time Ben and I are both pretty hands-on and we’ve done nearly all the work ourselves, which saved huge amounts of money. We stripped the flowery wallpaper in the living room almost straightaway, and pulled up the old carpet, as I was going to paint the floorboards underneath. Unfortunately, I found concrete instead of wood at one end of the room so we ended up laying a new carpet on that part. We also needed to lay new hall flooring, as there was just

concrete underneath the grotty vinyl. I wanted to use the original boards wherever possible, and as the living room ones were in good condition, we sanded and varnished them. The bedroom floors are all painted white. They have a few nail marks and dents, and with day-to-day life, they get a bit bashed, but for me, that’s part of the look. Nothing in my home is too perfect and that makes it very easy to live here. With three young children, it’s a good idea to keep things simple and relaxed.
Pastel scheme Light and feminine was the feel I wanted to achieve in my home. The walls are mostly painted plain white, which is cost-effective, and very easy to touch up if needed. I love pinks though, and I’ve got lots of painted furniture in pastels, off-whites and greys. Pale shades can really lift the rooms, although it took four or five coats of white paint to cover some of the very

deep wall colours. The bathroom walls were strong teal green with yellow gloss woodwork. Changing them to gentle taupe and clean, matt white has made a massive difference to the light and sense of space. We couldn’t afford to do much to the kitchen, but luckily the floor and wall tiles were plain and neutral and I’ve painted the cabinets. They were an uninspiring, wood effect and I’ve primed and painted them in pale grey, and then varnished on top. They’re hardwearing and quick to clean, and it all looks much brighter.
Finding treasures I don’t really have a fixed style – it’s all a bit eclectic and mismatched, and I often move stuff about. I like pretty pieces and an aged, weathered look, and we have a lot of second-hand items that I’ve restored and painted. Car-boot sales are brilliant places to browse and buy furniture and the kids enjoy them as much as Ben and I do,

we often find amazing treasures. I go for attractive shapes and interesting details, and I’m not put off if something’s a bit damaged, I’ll just try to fix it rather than discard it. Paint can totally transform a tired old piece of furniture, and if you can manage some basic upholstery, too, it really does make all the difference.
Bargain hunt I’ve found some incredible deals online as well. The living room mantel shelf was a fantastic buy and has become one of my favourite features in the house. It was originally a complete fire surround, and cost £20 on eBay. When we got it here, it was gorgeous, but it didn’t fit the fireplace. After some thought, I realised we could cut the uprights off and just use the top as a mantel shelf. It’s very decorative and all my candles and lanterns look lovely around it – it really makes the room. We’ve got three bedrooms, so Riley and Flinn share a room, which is fine for
the moment. As the children get older, we may think about moving house, although we do have a massive attic that could be converted into a lovely fourth bedroom. If we ever did decide to leave this house, I think I’d find it quite difficult to move out. We’ve made it just how we want it and have put so much of ourselves into it. We didn’t have much DIY experience to begin with, but we’ve learnt so much as we’ve gone along, and picked up vital information and skills from watching online video tutorials. There aren’t many tasks we wouldn’t tackle ourselves now. I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved in this house, especially as we fitted it all around our family and our jobs.’

Print out a butterfly template (we just Googled it) and cut it out. Take a rectangular piece of fabric measuring wider than the template and iron flat. Cut a square piece of iron-on adhesive and place on one end of the fabric, paper side up. Iron for 2 seconds, then allow to cool before removing the paper.

Fold the fabric over, then iron for 6 seconds until the two sides have bonded together. Repeat with different fabrics. Place the template on the bonded fabric pieces and neatly draw around it. Carefully cut out the shape, and then repeat to make at least 10 butterflies for your bunting.

Cut a 1.5m length of ribbon. Place the tips of a fabric butterfly’s wings on the ribbon and neatly sew each wing in place onto the ribbon using a needle and thread. Repeat to create a length of butterfly bunting as long as desired. Make a loop at each end of the ribbon to hang if needed.

y husband Joe and I had always wanted to buy our own place in Christchurch, near Bournemouth, but the house prices weren’t in our budget,’ says Charlotte. ‘Luckily, my mum provided us with the opportunity to fulfil our dream. She had a large garden, which led to a rundown outhouse. After some thought, she decided to convert this into a two-bed property for herself and sell the main fivebed detached. Even though we weren’t planning on moving at the time, we jumped at the chance to buy it as we knew it could be our ideal family home. It’s such a nice area and the schools are brilliant, which is ideal for our children, Elsa and Rory.
Personal touch When we moved in, I was eight months pregnant, and although the interior was lovely and didn’t require any major building work, we wanted to redecorate to make it our own. We started straight away and the basics were completed within a month – but the rest took six months. The biggest challenge was our en suite as we ended up with various problems, not least of which was water leaking through to the kitchen. But all the issues were rectified eventually. I did all the painting and decorating myself – I’ve forever got a paintbrush in

ourselves, plus I was heavily pregnant at the time. I couldn’t recommend them enough – it’s completely transformed the room without costing us too much. For the rest of the house, I wanted to go for a neutral interior so that I can change the look easily with accessories. I love muted colours that take inspiration from nature, as well as fresh subtle pastels – bright colours are a little bit too hectic for my taste. Some people may find my all-beige scheme a bit bland, but it’s so easy to bring in new details or cushions whenever I want to mix things up a bit.
Keep it calm My nan, who I was very close to, passed away in 2014 just before we bought this place. We used my inheritance to fund the work we’ve carried out, and also for a lot of the furniture, which we’ve either bought on a budget or upcylced. We got the

table and chairs second-hand on Gumtree. I painted them in Annie Sloan chalk paint and reupholstered the seats. This paint is a go-to for me as it requires little preparation and gives a shabby-chic look. I think my nan would be pleased. Then in the living room, the Homebase sofas were bought during a sale, and the rug was a bargain find on eBay. Our footstool was also bought on there, but we gave it a new look by updating it in Laura Ashley fabric to fit in with the new scheme.
Thrifty finds After decorating this place, I’ve realised you don’t have to spend a fortune to make something look beautiful. It’s amazing what homewares you can pick up from high-street stores such as Matalan, Asda, The Range and so on. Plus, having access to so many shops online makes it easy to hunt around for the best bargains. I also get quite a few of my ideas and inspiration from Instagram – there’s such

a creative community on there and you get to know the people behind some fantastic homes. I actually set up my interiors blog, thehomethatmademe.com, after requests via my Instagram @thehomethatmademe. It’s great being able to share what I’ve managed to complete on a budget.

hether you’ve got an outbuilding that’s ripe for conversion, or just a spare corner of lawn, adding a garden room or summerhouse can be an ingenious solution to getting the most out of your home. But there are some rules to be aware of. Our guide explains more…

Will I need planning permission? This will all depend on what you want to use the building for. Constructing a room in your outdoor space won’t require planning permission as long as its use is ‘incidental to the enjoyment of the dwelling house’. For example, if it’s an added extra and not used as a main residence. A new house needs planning permission in the usual way – visit planningportal.gov.uk.

But if I’m building in my garden, can’t I just do what I want? Planners are all about thinking ahead (the clue is in their job title). While it might seem unfair to you, few people would want to see their neighbourhoods divided
and sub-divided into smaller and even smaller separate plots, possibly with unsympathetically designed buildings.

So what am I allowed to build without planning permission? James Willmott, founder of Harrison James, who designs and builds modern garden rooms, says: ‘If the building takes up less than 50 per cent of the outdoor space and is under 2.5m in height, you’ll be allowed to build it against the property boundary. Alternatively, if you’re able to build 2m away from the boundary, it can be up to 4m high with a pitched roof.’ This counts as ‘permitted development’ in much the same way as adding a loft extension.

It’s definitely good practice to let them know and see if they have any objections, but you’re not obliged to if it’s a garden room that falls within permitted development. Bear in mind that your new building may need to comply with building regulations, depending on factors such as its size, how close it is to your home and how it will be used. Talk to your designer or builder for advice before you begin.

Can we have a bedroom in it? A garden room within permitted development can be used as an extra living space, a home office or study, a gym or a teenage TV hangout. However, it should not be intended for use as permanent sleeping accommodation.

Are there any other restrictions that I should be aware of? If your home is listed, a new-build or is in an area of outstanding natural beauty, check with your local planning officer. Planning permission for properties such as these can vary from area to area and also change as time goes on, so what a neighbour might have done in the past is not always a guide to what you can do. Start your research at planningportal.gov.uk to find your local
planning authority. And bear in mind, rules may vary between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Sort out your shed
Clean up Give hard areas a thorough sweep, then get rid of weeds and moss using a tool such as the Wolf patio block weed brush, £12.99, Homebase. Next, use a hose to power-wash dirt and grime away. Get weeding
On a dry day, remove everything from your shed, so you can see all of your kit. It’s tempting to use it as a dumping ground, so be ruthless and take unwanted items to the charity shop or tip. Revive furniture Wipe down your garden furniture with a cloth and a mild detergent, then leave it to dry in the sunshine. ith so many different plants available, it’s hard to know which to choose and how to care for them. But we’ve scoured the garden centres and found a selection that are easy to look after and guaranteed to last.
Plan ahead When you’re planting seeds and plug plants, try to ensure that you’ll have something in bloom for every month of the spring and summer. Most plants have care labels that indicate when to expect flowers (or a harvest for fruit and veg), so choose carefully so there’s not a gap without colour. If you’re sowing seeds, stagger your sowings and plant batches a few weeks apart so your plants reach maturity at different times, prolonging the flowering or fruiting season. This method is known as succession planting.
Choose starter plants If you’re a beginner and want pretty but low-maintenance plants, fill containers with trailing Lobelia (usually blue, pink, purple or white) and upright Geraniums (available in a range of colours). These hassle-free plants come in great-value plug form from garden centres in late spring and early summer. Dead head them regularly to prolong flowering.

ecorating isn’t just for your interiors – your garden is a blank canvas, too, and a fresh coat of paint can completely transform your space. But the process of reviving your outdoor furniture and walls can seem daunting, so make sure you’re prepared before you begin. When painting tables and chairs, turn each piece upside-down when dry and paint the feet underneath, too, as this is where moisture is absorbed. Untreated furniture will soon show the damaging effects of the weather. Try Sandtex’s 10-year exterior gloss paint (£28.99 per 2.5ltr). Any plants will make the garden more welcoming. You could also paint the walls a pale colour to reflect light and highlight the plants you grow. Concentrate on growing climbers and wall shrubs, such as flowering Ornamental Quince, Euonymus Fortunei and Dwarf Clematis, mixed in with other climbing plants. In front of these, have smaller shrubs and perennials, such as Sedum Dianthus and Catmint. Add colour with hanging baskets and pots filled with perennial shrubs.

What’s the best way to store, organise and label seedlings? Seeds mu S ust always be kept d and frrost-free. I keep dry them in a wooden container in my office. Shop-bought seeds will be sealed in a foil or plastic packet to protect them. If you’re collecting your own to save money, pop them in envelopes and label the packets with not only the plant but the date you collected it, too (some can last up to a year when stored properly). When you’re sowing seeds, always label them, too, as different types of seeds will germinate at different times.

How can I attract birds into my garden?
A good range of plants attract different types of insects, which in turn attracts birds. Birds love to perch and roost in evergreen plants and hedges. ABOUT ME I’m Georgia Field, 20, an art and design student, and I live at home with my parents Karen, 55, and Michael, 58, and our two labradoodles, Dexter and Duffy. We live in a four-bed Georgian house in the heart of the Kent countryside. ost homes have a room that is a magnet for junk, whether it’s sports equipment, books, bags or paperwork,’ says Georgia. ‘For us, it was the conservatory, which was a shame because, potentially, it was the loveliest space in the house. My mum Karen designed the room herself and saved about £15,000 by employing a local carpenter and builder. It’s actually more like an orangery as it’s brick-built with windows and a skylight. After the initial flurry of activity, however, the space slowly got swallowed up. It kept niggling away at me, so last Mother’s Day I decided to mastermind a mini makeover. We had some furniture already, so it was just a case of reorganising everything.

The inspiration behind the scheme was a golden yellow rose tablecloth from Ragged Rose. My mum loved it and we decided on a yellow and duck-egg blue palette. it was laid, my dad painted the walls a duck-egg blue and my mum and I upcycled Ikea chairs to match, which look great. Luckily, the rattan sofa, side table and chair we got when the conservatory was built still look as good as new. So the only extra furniture we bought were chairs, a plant stand, a small dining table from a junk shop and garden seating. The conservatory is south-facing and filled with light all day, but it’s not too hot so we decided against blinds. Plus, it’s enclosed by trees, so privacy isn’t an issue. Instead we can enjoy views of the garden.

Our main aim was to create a room with a purpose. We already have a kitchen-diner, but no formal dining area, so this was key. We also wanted to be able to use this as an extra living space, whatever the weather. Restyling this space has transformed the way we live. We now eat most of our meals in here and stay to chat. Cut several branches from the garden and trim the wood to remove any shoots. Cut one end on a diagonal so that it’s easier to push into the soil. Use a vegetable peeler to remove the bark along the top of one edge and create a flat area. Leave the sticks to dry completely, which may take a few days. Use a Sharpie pen to write on the label to mark your herbs, vegetables or plants. Apply a coat of clear nail varnish over the writing to act as a protective layer. Place the sticks in each pot.

Mix the adhesive as per the instructions on the packet and spread to cover approximately a quarter of the saucer a few millimetres thick. Push the mosaic pieces into the adhesive, trying to keep the colour mix random or until you’re happy with the pattern. When covered, apply more adhesive and mosaic tiles, and keep going until the inside of the saucer is completely covered. Gently wipe the surface and the top edge with a damp sponge to remove any excess grout. Leave to dry for a short time, then gently wipe the surface again to clean the mosaic in the saucer. Leave to dry thoroughly overnight, then place the saucer on top of the flower pot to finish and fill the saucer with water.

Roll out the air-drying clay to about 5mm thick and so that it measures slightly larger than the size of your placemat. Carefully lay the placemat lightly on top of the rolled clay and cut to fit around the outside using a sharp knife. Using the tip of the knife, score the surface of the clay with a woodgrain pattern – you may wish to practise drawing this design on paper beforehand to make sure you’re happy with the look. Leave the clay to dry thoroughly (follow packaging instructions). Use a strong glue to stick the clay on top of the placemat and, once dry, apply a coating of varnish or clear sealer to add a protective layer.

Iron your cushion cover to remove any creases. Working outside on a dustsheet, spray one side with the gold spray paint and leave to dry. Spray in slow, steady lines across the fabric for even coverage. Once dry, apply a second coat and repeat on the reverse side. Follow sealing and treatment instructions on the can.

Once the gold paint is completely dry, use tape to mark out a geometric pattern on the cushion cover (or use a stencil, like our star design). Use a paintbrush and the black fabric paint to cover the lines in between the masking tape. Remove the masking tape then leave to dry.

Using a paper template, draw and cut out a letter from the fabric. Iron a piece of Bondaweb slightly bigger than the letter template to the back of the patterned fabric. Place the letter face down on the paper backing, draw around it and cut out. Remove the paper backing and use an iron to stick the fabric letter onto the towel. Sew a zigzag stitch around the edge of the letter with a sewing machine for a neat finish.

Take four matching pieces of wood measuring 50cm long and, 3cm from each end, drill a 7mm hole with a wood bit through each. Use sandpaper to smooth the edges. Cut two pieces of rope to 140cm long. On one length, tie a knot in one end and wrap sticky tape around the other to stop it from fraying.

Thread the rope up through the first piece of wood (with the sticky taped end first), and push the wood down so it rests firmly on the knot. Tie another knot 23cm above the first length of wood and thread on the next piece of wood. Make another knot at equal height and continue until all four rungs are in place. Use a hacksaw (or bread knife) to remove 1cm from the length of the cork. Using a drill bit, make a hole through the centre of the cork to match the size of the pump tube to be inserted (ours was 8mm). Carefully thread the cork over the tube of the pump up to the top so it fits tightly. Put the pump into the bottle so the cork keeps it snug. You may need to adjust the position of the cork and/or trim the tube so it fits into the new bottle and won’t allow any soap to leak.

Measure and cut a piece of wood to size. Use a pencil to make marks 4cm from the top edge at the centre of the wood and 9.5cm from either end. Use the 15mm screws to secure a hose clamp at each mark, ensuring the tightening screw is accessible. Use a drill to make a hole in each top corner of the wood, then thread rope through and knot to hang. Loosen each hose clamp, slide the neck of the jar in place and tighten to secure. Repeat for each jar.

We bought our four-bed home in Chester a year ago, and are slowly updating the dated 1980s interior. MY CHALLENGE As well as being in desperate need of modernising, the bathroom didn’t work for us as a family. We never used the bidet and the huge corner bath meant there was no room for a separate shower. MY WISH LIST A light, bright space that, while modern, would still work for a growing family. Incorporating a spacious walk-in shower was a necessity, as was adding plenty of decorative interest to avoid the room feeling too stark and clinical.

MAKE A BIG STATEMENT’ Stylist at Home, Llinos, 39, transformed her dated bathroom into a contemporary space that suited her growing family’s lifestyle
F
inding our ideal family home proved a challenge, so instead we decided to take on a project that we could tailor to our needs. Eventually my husband, Joe, and I settled on a 1980s house with plenty of space but little character,’ says Llinos. The property, while livable, needed updating. We agreed to make do with the kitchen as it was for a while, but our first task was to revamp the bathroom. The awkward bath and makeshift shower just weren’t practical with three kids. And although it’s a good-sized room, the existing design, complete with a bidet, bulky whirlpool corner bath and exposed pipework made it feel small and cramped. However, with some careful planning, I knew we could improve on the dated decor and squeeze in a separate shower.
BLEND IN ‘The frameless finish on the glass shower creates a sleek and seamless look’
A fresh approach Getting the layout right was vital and, after experimenting with many ideas, I finally decided to locate the new bath under the window, making room for a shower where the old one originally was. The loo could then move further along the wall, ensuring there was no need for costly additional pipework, while the remaining space between the bath and shower provided the perfect gap for a vanity cabinet and basin. Having young children meant we needed lots of floor space, yet despite meticulously measuring the dimensions and marking out where everything would go with tape, I was still worried the room would be too busy – even when the plumber started work! Whereas Joe was more concerned about removing the old floor-to-ceiling tiles. However, our fears were unfounded as, once the old suite was removed, it was clear that there would be plenty of room. Plus, having decided to re-tile only half the walls, we simply opted to replaster them for a smooth finish, which is perfect for

painting. Everything seemed to come together very easily, which was a relief. In addition to the usual plumbing, we also relayed an electricity supply for the shower. We chose an electric model so that hot water is guaranteed, which was another important consideration for a busy family of five. It’s also surprisingly powerful.
Colour explosion Before work began, I spent weeks sourcing items online, and in keeping with my vision for a low-maintenance, contemporary finish, I went for a minimalist shower enclosure with child-friendly curves and a sleek built-in bath. The smart wall-hung vanity was chosen for its enduring style and generous storage. However, it was the statement, yet still practical, floor tiles that really brought the scheme to life. As a previous lover of all things neutral, I made Joe nervous with my sudden enthusiasm for colour and pattern, but I just wanted to be more adventurous. In the end, I eventually persuaded him to agree

to both the floor and a feature panel in the otherwise plain shower area. While it did take time to arrange the tiles in patchwork, everyone loves the result.
Finishing touches Never one to ditch neutrals completely, I teamed crisp white tiling with soft grey walls. A friend donated the vintage mirror and it adds a touch of character to the vanity area. The blind is just a length of fabric, hemmed and tacked in place, as I felt the window needed an injection of colour to match the floor. Lastly, a few vibrant towels and simple wire storage complete the transformation of, what is now, a bright and airy family bathroom, with ample space and real wow factor!’

ompared to other rooms in your home, choosing a dressing for your bathroom windows can be more challenging and requires extra thought. So it’s worth looking into all your options before you begin. Not only does it have to suit the style of your space but it has to tick off many practical requirements, too. For instance, given that bathrooms tend to have quite high levels of humidity and moisture, it’s important to seek out a hardy material that can withstand these conditions.

Roller blinds are a good option if you want to inject a splash of colour, as they offer plenty of choice when it comes to designs and patterns. Plus, they’re typically a less expensive alternative to other fabric blinds as they’re more straightforward to make. Be sure to choose a practical, waterresistant material that will tolerate high humidity levels, splashes and damp.
Spa-inspired If you have your heart set on installing shutters or slatted blinds, avoid going for real wood as it’s poorly suited to damp conditions and can be a breeding ground for mould and mildew. Instead, go for faux or imitation wooden blinds to get the look without compromising on function. Also, if your bathroom is short on natural light, consider a frosted window film rather
than a blind or shutters. It’s a modern alternative that’s very simple to apply. It gives the appearance of etched glass, so not only will this allow more light to enter the room, but there’s a wide range of playful designs available that will add a contemporary focal point.

Measure and cut a piece of your chosen fabric 1cm narrower than the width of the metal roller and to the drop you require for your window, plus 3cm. Fold and pin, with the wrong sides together, a channel along the bottom of the fabric. Machine stitch in place. Hang up your fabric outside and spray the reverse with the fabric stiffener spray. Leave to dry. Once dry, take your fabric and attach the top edge to the double-sided tape on the roller bar, then secure

with masking tape. Place the bottom bar inside the channel. Roll up the blind, with the wrong side facing outwards, and push the chain mechanism into one end of the top of the roller and the pin into the other. For a more detailed guide, read the kit instructions. Fit the window brackets, then hang your blind following the instructions in the kit. Operate the blind to check that the fabric rolls up evenly and make any necessary adjustments.

ABOUT ME I’m Maxine Brady, 38, an interior stylist and blogger at welovehomeblog.com and I live with my photographer boyfriend Jonathan Jones in a two-bedroom house in Brighton, East Sussex. This is our first home together, and the kitchen is the third room we’ve renovated after doing up our bathroom and living room. MY CHALLENGE Our kitchen looked tired and bland, and I wanted to inject as much style and personality as possible into the small room, as well as creating extra storage. MY WISH LIST I craved underfloor heating, statement wall and floor tiles, bespoke touches, integrated appliances, lots of storage and copper accents to add some warmth and character.

Stylist at Home Maxine, 38, overhauled her damp, cold kitchen into a welcoming room with lots of personal details and copper accents
W
hen I moved into my new home, I was desperate to tackle the kitchen,’ says Maxine. ‘It was overcrowded, with wall units and an old boiler that took up lots of space. Also, it was a death trap due to damp – water had been dripping down the wall into the oven’s electrics. It was too dangerous to use, so we lived on toast and takeaways for five months while I saved up money to revamp the room. Before work began, my boyfriend Jonathan and I visited New York and loved the coffee bars and markets in Brooklyn, which became the starting point for my kitchen design. They looked stylish but functional, and hard-wearing. When I got home, I started collating my design ideas, looking to introduce copper accents, along with rough wood and a bold patterned floor.

Before we could start, the old boiler had to be taken out. We got British Gas to install a new one upstairs, leaving us more space to play with. We sold the old kitchen online and stripped back the room. Once the units were out, we could see burnt-out wiring and mould growing behind them. We used a jack hammer to hack off the plaster – it was filthy, exhausting work. Our builders knocked out a new window in the far end wall and put in a damp course. Moving just one window instantly brightened the kitchen and gave us views of the garden. Once the room was plastered, underfloor heating was put in and geometric floor tiles laid. We saw lots of patterned tiled flooring in New York, which inspired the 3D design we chose.
Perfect fit It took two weeks for the plastered walls to dry in time for the units to be fitted. Our kitchen designer from Hehku Heavenly Spaces, came up with an ingenious design, which managed to fit in all our appliances, including a dishwasher,

Copper tones I couldn’t find any handles I liked so Jonathan made copper ones himself using plumbers’ piping. I love them, as they are totally unique to our room. Wall units would have closed in the space, so he also made shelving out of scaffolding planks and copper piping, to keep the room feeling light. Next, we shopped around for accessories. Now it’s finished, we really enjoy being in there. It was so grim at first, but we’re really proud of our kitchen. I can’t wait for our first house party here, so we can dance on these tiles!’

Preheat oven to 180°C/ Gas 4. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar,
butter, eggs, banana and vanilla until pale. Spoon into 18 paper cases and bake for 20-25 mins until springy. Once cool, cut a small well in each cake and fill with 1tsp caramel sauce. To make the topping, whisk together the butter and icing sugar, add 150g caramel sauce and whisk again. Spoon into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe over the cakes. Sprinkle with small cubes of fudge and banana slices.

WHITE CHOCOLATE FRUIT TARTS TAKES 30MINS SERVES 6-8 Preheat oven to 180°C/Gas 4. Gently heat 150ml double cream in a pan. Remove from the heat and add 100g chopped white chocolate and ½tsp vanilla extract. Cool, then stir in 1 complete egg and 1 egg yolk. Pour into 6-8 ready-made butter pastry cases and bake for 10-12 mins. Leave to cool, then top with 125g mixed fruit, sliced. Heat 2tbsp raspberry or apricot jam till melted and brush over the tarts. Chill before serving.

When it reaches room temperature, beat in 2 eggs. Spoon into a piping bag with 1.5cm hole. Pipe 8cm lengths onto a lined baking tray, bake for 25 mins until gold and dry. Whip 300ml double cream until it peaks, whisk in 3tbsp icing sugar. Pipe into each eclair then chill for 30 mins. Put 150g caramel sauce in a bowl and dip each eclair in. Chill until ready to serve.

Preheat oven to 180째C/Gas 4. Whisk the eggs, sugar and vanilla together until light and pale. Fold in the flour and almonds. Pour into a lined 22 x 31cm Swiss roll tin and bake for 15 mins or until springy. Remove from the oven and leave to cool, then turn the sponge out of the tin and remove the lining paper. Use a 4cm cutter to make 24 rounds. Whip the cream into soft peaks, add the icing sugar and liqueur and continue whisking until thick. Top 12 rounds with cream, add some jam, then put another sponge on top. Dust with icing sugar and top with a fresh raspberry.

Cut the cake into 16 and spoon over the icing. Add daisies, leave to set.

TAKES 1HR 30MINS SERVES 4 Heat 2tbsp rapeseed oil in a large casserole dish, add 500g chicken fillets, skin removed, 1tbsp ground coriander, 1tbsp paprika, 1tbsp ground cumin and 1 chopped onion, fry for 10 mins to lightly brown. Heat the oven to 200°C/ Gas 6. Add 3 crushed garlic cloves, 500g cubed squash, 300g giant couscous, 300ml hot chicken stock and season. Cover and cook in the oven for 25 mins, until the squash is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Add 150g frozen peas and cook for 5 more mins.

Put the broccoli in a pan of boiling water. Return to the boil, then simmer for 2 mins. Add the couscous and turn off the heat. Brush the sea bass fillets with a little of the oil and pan fry for 2 mins on each side. Stir the onion, pine nuts, lemon zest and juice, oil and mint leaves into the couscous. Serve with the sea bass on top.

LAMB & MINT KOFTA KEBABS TAKES 30MINS SERVES 4 Preheat the grill. Mix 500g minced lamb, 1 chopped onion, 3 crushed cloves garlic and 2tbsp chopped fresh mint, season with salt and freshly ground pepper.
Shape into 24 balls and thread onto skewers. Place on a grill pan with 12 cherry tomatoes. Drizzle over 1tbsp olive oil and grill for 15 mins, turning occasionally, remove the tomatoes after 10 mins. Pour 200ml boiling water over 250g couscous and 1tsp vegetable bouillon powder. Cover and leave for 5 mins until all the liquid has been absorbed. Stir a 290g jar chopped roasted peppers, 410g can drained chickpeas, juice of 1 lemon, 1tbsp chopped fresh parsley and 1tbsp olive oil into the couscous. Add the tomatoes. Serve the koftas on a bed of couscous, with 4tbsp tzatziki and fresh mint leaves.

TAKES 30MINS SERVES 2 100g rice noodles 2 beef stock cubes 1 small onion, finely chopped 3cm piece of root ginger, peeled and sliced 1 red chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced 1 star anise 1 cinnamon stick 230g frying steak, trimmed of any fat 150g beansprouts 235g green pak choi, thickly sliced Handful of fresh coriander leaves 1 lime, cut into wedges

Place the noodles in a bowl, cover with boiling water and leave to soak for 15 mins, stirring once or twice to stop them from sticking. Place the beef stock cubes, onion, ginger, chilli, star anise, cinnamon stick and 750ml boiling water in a large pan and bring back to the boil. Simmer for 10 mins. Cook the steak in a non-stick frying or griddle pan for 2-3 mins each side, until browned but still a little pink in the centre. Transfer

Drain the noodles and divide them between 2 bowls. Ladle the broth and vegetables over the noodles and top with the steak and coriander leaves. Serve with the lime wedges for squeezing over the top.

Pre-heat the grill to medium-high. Then gently heat the peperonata in a saucepan. Brush a little oil in a small non-stick frying pan. Add ¼ of the beaten eggs, stir a little and cook for 5 mins, or until the eggs are lightly set. Add ¼ of the ham, some torn basil leaves and ¼ of the grated cheese. Place under the grill for 1 min, until golden. Spoon ¼ of the peperonata over the omelette and then fold in half. Repeat for the other three omelettes. Serve garnished with basil leaves, accompanied by crusty bread and salad.

CHEAT’S LASAGNE
Pre-heat the grill to high and bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Add the ravioli to the pan, return to the boil and cook for a few minutes, according to the packet instructions. Meanwhile, pour the tinned tomatoes into a non-metal bowl and microwave on high for 2 mins. Drain the ravioli and transfer to a baking dish. Pour the tomatoes over the top of the ravioli and sprinkle with a few basil leaves. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and spoon over the mascarpone. Sprinkle on the grated Parmesan and the remaining basil leaves. Place the dish under the grill until the cheese is golden and bubbling.

the edge. Top with 8 sunblushed tomatoes and 6 slices chorizo. Season well. Put the pizza on the baking tray and bake for 7-10 mins, until crisp and golden. Mix 1tsp olive oil and 1tsp balsamic vinegar and toss with a handful of rocket until covered. Serve on top of the pizza.

For a quick savoury dip, drain a jar of olives, chop them up and mix with a pot of cream cheese. Add a little lemon juice and black pepper, then sprinkle with chopped parsley. Serve with crudites or crisps. Drizzle some roasted tomatoes with balsamic vinegar. Combine with cooked pasta and mix in chopped black olives and torn basil leaves. Grate some parmesan over the top. Whiz up some chopped black olives, a little garlic, a few tbsp of capers and some anchovy fillets. Season, then add olive oil and a little lemon juice for a tasty tapenade. Stir in the lime juice. Pour into 6 lightly oiled metal moulds and chill for 4 hrs. Dip the moulds briefy in hot water, turn out and top with slivers of lime. Spoon the puree around and scatter with basil.

Whisk the egg whites until stiff. Slowly add the sugar, then the cornflour and 3tbsp powdered raspberries. Spoon onto the trays and spread out to fit the circle. Bake for 1hr, then leave to cool. Make a sauce by stirring the butter, chocolate and syrup in a bowl over a pan of simmering water until smooth. Whip the cream and stir in the sugar. Place a meringue on a plate, add half the cream, berries and sauce. Repeat, top with meringue. Dust with powder to serve.

Firstly, if your chair has an upholstered seat, turn it upside down to remove it and put this to one side. Next, deal with any wobbly frames by tightening screws and mending any loose joints with wood glue. Rub over old wood with fine sandpaper to remove flaking paint or varnish and provide a smooth base for painting. Use
a brush dipped in chalk paint to coat the wood, leave to dry, add a second layer and then leave to dry. Apply clear wax and, once dry, buff with a soft cloth. For a new seat cover, place the seat pad face down on top of a piece of fabric (also face down). Wrap the material over and use a staple gun to secure along one side. Pull

fabric taut and secure on the opposite side. Continue on the remaining two sides, folding neat pleats at the corners. Carefully trim any excess material with scissors then fit the seat back into the frame. For extra detail on a plain fabric seat, mask off a portion of the fabric and paint this with a contrasting chalk paint.
