INTERTEXTURE Ecological Paving System This project is an experimental research to create a functional landscape surface for runoff solution, modular system, and perception of private and open space. By use materials with different permeability and texture, the proposal used scripts as a tool to explore the definition of the open and private outdoor spaces in Xintiandi Shanghai, and created a perceivable natural looking paving effect with smart modular paving prototypes.

Xintiandi is a urban scenic spot with historical and cultural outlook, the integration of Chinese and Western features. This area was residential. After given a commercial function, the old houses, reflecting Shanghai history and culture, were turned into a fashion, leisure and cultural entertainment center. In addition, it is located in the heart of Shanghai. This place has become a must see spot, where a large number of people come to visit every day. A large number of traditional materials, such as brick and stone were retained after renovation. These materials are distributed over the site, providing a function of space enclosure, creating different spatial ambience, and guiding the runoff. This relationship has aroused our interest. We would like to digitally extract and redesign the pavement on this site.

Site Analysis

Parameters used for generating the paving system come out from the site analysis. The commercial condition and human activity are main elements to determine these parameters. These parameters are border, centerline, territory, texture and intrusion. Intrusion is defined as the degree to which the inside gets in touch with the outside. The rule for generating the paving system integrates all the parameters and utilize digital tools such as rhinoceros and grasshopper.

According to the research conclusions, we have this site ground partitioned into 5 zones with different functional properties as well as ecological function ranked by permeability. Retention will give people a more soft and comfortable feeling to achieve the goal for people stay. Plus, the permeability of the pavement material is strong to let water seep into. Flow is much harder and less permeable, allowing people to get through quickly. Transition part of the two regions is the interweaving part and will show great variability. 10

TRANSFORMER Responsive Kinetic Structure The project is a research to study heliotropism in plants and the use of mechanisms. The aim is to find a way that would improve the urban environment. The proposal can be various throughout a bottomup research. The result is a water recycle system integrated a prototype that could self-adjust in response to the environmental change.

This structure has a variety of curved forms, which are symmetrical or asymmetric. By setting different focal points and fixed points multiple movement mode can be achieved. This diversity of form also provides a lot of possibilities for design development.

I have explored a variety of sources of power. In addition to manpower, the energy of the natural environment can also be converted into driving force. A structure that works without mechanical power will save a lot of energy. I mainly studied wind energy and rainfall, the two most common Manual Vertical Standing

forms of natural forces. The possibility of its application is also explored.

This prototype is proposed to be applied into water restore system and rainproof shelter for plants in urban agriculture. It is able to expand and become a dome when it rains so that the plants beneath won't suffer from heavy rain or wind. Meanwhile the prototype will receive rainwater and convey it into water storage tank. The water later can be cleaned and used to irrigate farmland. When rain is getting smaller, the prototype will then return to the original condition after water left starts to evaporate. This whole process needs no involvement of human. It is a self-responsive structure that can relief people from unnecessary job and save a lot of energy.

CURVATURE Urban Waterfront Landscape The project called for the insertion of a green landscape into the rural architectural complex. The proposal combines an urban form derived from the site itself with the morphology of human flow. The result is something connecting the urban and the pastoral, a central link of suburban areas, a mutual public space, an urban park.

The site is located in a large commercial center area, which is far away from the center of Shanghai and adjacent to a 20-meter-wide river. This is the only public landscape space in this region, we want to offer a waterfront with possibilities of diversity of activities for the neighborhood residents as well customers who come to this business center. In order to take full advantage of the waterfront geographical condition, we use a trial and a stream to bring people into the water and the water into the site, to create multi-level interactions between people and water. In this design, we try a variety of combinations between landscape elements, so that people could feel and enjoy this riparian space from a different point of view.

LINEAR Ancient Building Renovation This project is to renovate a traditional Chinese residence that has been neglected for years. The site is in a ancient town, where a lot of elders live. The aim is to create a space for aged as entertaining, relaxing, social involved and living. The proposal studies the original layout and wooden structure of the house and retains them, integrates them in a newly designed space.

Cultural Building

The site is an ancient village in Shanghai where was to develop into a tourist town but not much people know here and come to this town. The young people have left the town, leaving mostly elders here. This is a sound and peaceful place with beautiful views for elders to live here. We proposed to design a place for more tourists to come and experience the life here for several days.
