PRODUCT DESIGN 2018 — Professional Hairdryer

what is a "good" hairdryer for professional stylists?

Lean product development

Lean product development (LPD) is a lean approach from TOYOTA& 稲垣公夫 , to counter the challenges of product development, helping companies develop products in an efficient way- focusing on reducing long development cycle times & costs and creating greater value for customers. In this project, our goal is using the LPD method and Jobs-To-Be-Done(JTBD) to develop a refined and efficient hairdryer for professional hair stylists.

Stylists hold the hairdryer 15 cm from the hair.

step2. styling

Step 2. is divided into 2 parts: forming and shaping. - forming: Stylists hold the hairdryer fitting the hair.

- shaping: Lots of stylists use the air intake to cool down hair.

Photographs can serve as memory storage and, when viewed, can activate memory recall. A photo is information about past light that we can perceive in the present time. “Taking photos can affect memory for what we saw differently” “Double Exposure” is a combination of two or more exposures to create a single image. It can bring people many feelings. We can stitch different memory clips to create a scene we've never seen or tell a story that has never happened, just like a mental traveling.

This project is to analyze and extract the imagery from a movie, drama, character, etc. and then transform it into a physical object.

The quartet is a Japanese television drama, broadcast from January 2017 to March 2017. The main characters in the drama are four musicians. They are the persons who are seen as a failure because they cannot take their interest as work. It tells about the depression and confusion in their life and the fascinating process of struggling for the label of success and failure, finally identifying with selfworth.

The transformer boxes on the streets of Taiwan are full of various texts and graffiti, including artistic creation and bad text messages expressing dissatisfaction for social issues. In terms of bad text messages, the message maker chose to express his emotions on the transformer box in order to be anonymous, open, and not commented. However, most recipients refused to receive the message because the message was too shocking and terrible. Therefore, it causes a contradiction that delivers are eager to send messages but the receivers don’t want to receive it.

intro 小 情 設 is the workshop which focuses on Speculative Design. We use design as a tool to create not only things but ideas, to explore and speculate about possible futures. The topic of this workshop is " the Complicated Pleasures". And we try to define and present it.

What is the Complicated Pleasures ?

concept We used "growth" to express "The complexity of pleasure". When moving forward to next life stage, we look forward to new things and challenges, but we are afraid to leave the comfort stage at the same time. We have aspirations but also some regret in the growth process. That is the complexity of pleasure.

Though the growth is always accompanied by something lost, it brings the complicated pleasures that we get some new and looks forward to the unknown future.

deliver grow up from birthday cap

We used the image of sushi train to represent the concept of growth process. Different objects carries the memory of different life stages. When life stage transits, the lost and found is the coplexity of pleasure. At the beginning of the video is a birthday cap representing the birth. At the end is a birthday cap with a couple which imply life is a cycle and new story will begin.

Behaviour design learning & simplification of the meaning

hers design inc. is a design company founded by 村田智明 (Chiaki Murata) that instruct and practice product design development based on so-called “Design of human behaviors” or user psychological behavior analysis. Due to the intern experience in hers deisgn, I found the Japanese thinking way for design is different to Taiwanese. Designers in hers design put emphasis on not only simplification of the form but also simplification of the meaning that can create an easy-to-understand concept. This concept has not been deeply understood to me in the past. So it drives me to wonder why and how Japanese think about design from this perspective.

Material as the starting point

Urban Mining

"X. future" is a course offered by the College X, virtual college of the 10th College in NCKU to face international trends, future issues, and cross-domain collaboration. "Circular Economy and Future City" is one of the academic groups with "materials" as the starting point, discuss the issue about the circular economy— Urban Mining, Material Bank and Future Living.

切入 Future Living

Material Bank

Based on the“Alkaline activation”, We divided materials into fillers and adhesives and made bricks by mixing different proportions of industrial waste( slag, sawdust, etc.) and living waste(coffee grounds, brick powder, etc). We want to make the material not only degraded and recovered, but upgraded and returned to raw materials to create new possibilities for product design and architecture.

EXPERIENCE — Circular Economy

workshop intro

group project The Future of Dining:

EATABLE ECO-TABLEWARE

Tableware exists for eating. 「

what if tableware is made from food, or from waste products of food factories? The meaning of “tableware exists for eating “ will not just in name only, but also in reality. If all the materials from our daily life, there will be no raw material needed during the process. Also, there will be no extra pollutants harming the environment. In this case, we wonder whether it may be a better way to achieve our goal of protecting the earth. We hypothesize a new living pattern in the future: giving up the complex process of manufacturing industry, we put a eatable-tableware-making machine at a community or a street corner. People come here with their leftovers and make them into a set of eatable tableware.

day-to-day basis
