CHARACTER CONCEPTS

PICA MAGAZINE The logo for the magazine is a stylized version of the symbol for the Pica unit. The cover illustration for the magazine relates to the feature article about Neville Brody titled “About Face.” This article was about Brody’s own magazine called “The Face”. The illustration was created using images and type that were either used or created by Brody himself and then assembled into the form of his face.

PICA MAGAZINE – COVER Media Design School - New Zealand

Oct 2008 Both the magazine logo and the cover illustration are covered with a UV spot varnish (overgloss).

PICA MAGAZINE

Pica is also the name for a medical disorder that is characterized by an appetite for substances that are largely non-nutritive such as; metal coins, clay, coal, soil, faeces, chalk, paper, soap, mucus, ash, gum, etc. YUMMY!

This is a fictional magazine I created myself from concept. The name Pica is in relation to the typographic unit of measurement. A Pica is 1/72nd of a foot, and therefore 1/6th of an inch. The Pica contains 12 point units of measure.

PRINTER BOOKLET This booklet was created for a project that required me to study the printing industry and interview a reputable printing firm in New Zealand. I chose to interview and study Soar Print, one of New Zealand’s largest family owned and operated printing firms in Auckland. The booklet is titled, “Ink on Paper” – taken from a quote by the owner of Soar Print, Fred Soar.

Feb 2010 The introduction to the booklet speaking briefly about the origins of printing. A spread from a 4 page article about the company’s history and the services provided by Soar Print.

From these concept sketches came an idea to include some of the various sustainable paper stocks that are used by Soar Print. This idea ended up as a rotating paper viewer/picker that allows the reader to scroll through the different paper stocks and read information about it.

UNITY BANNER

Concept sketches before creating the banner in the computer.

This was a banner made for a competition. Our former head of department wanted a set of banners to hang in her office that would represent the multi-cultural society of New Zealand. I chose to focus on the ‘unity’ of New Zealand’s many cultures. The illustration is of a New Zealand setting and includes native NZ, Polynesian and Celtic patterns.

A full colour version of the final output which was never used and was eventually adapted and changed to the 2 colour versions on the following page.

NEW ZEALAND UNITY BANNER Heather Rennie – Auckland

August 2008 The illustration style is Japanese/Ukiyo-e inspired.

I chose to focus on the ‘unity’ of New Zealand’s many cultures.

The whakatauki (maori proverb) along the bottom of the banner means; “If we do not paddle the canoe in time, we will not reach the shore.” The Chinese characters mean “UNITY.”

The illustration is of a New Zealand setting and includes native NZ, Polynesian and Celtic patterns.

CAFE IDENTITY

The culture that surrounds the name Kafana is very strong and distinct and was not suitable for what the client actually wanted.

The initial name the client had chosen for the cafe was Kafana, which comes from the Balkan regions in Europe. After research I was able to discover that the name Kafana was taken from the name for a distinct type of local bistro which primarily serves alcoholic beverages, coffee and occasionally light snacks), and sometimes includes a live band.

Because of this I was able to persuade the client to rethink the name for their cafe.

CAFE DANUBE – IN PROGRESS

CAFE IDENTITY The name Danube comes from the river that flows through 10 european countries in the Balkan regions. We wanted to keep the feel and culture of the ‘kafana’ and the Balkan region within the logo identity and the cafe brand. The type of coffee that is native to the Balkan region was actually developed in the Ottoman era within the Turkey region which later spread to Southeast Europe.

CAFE DANUBE – IN PROGRESS Cumorah Tamihana – Auckland

Mar – Apr 2010 Some of the logo concepts include a dzeva pot. This is a traditional pot used for brewing the type of coffee native to the Balkan region. The client has gone to great extents to order a set of dzeva pots from Serbia – establishing the brand and culture they wish for their cafe.
