Fundamental Principles of Montessori Schools Principle 1: Classes in Montessori Schools are mixed-age and non-graded. -age classes comprise at least three-year groupings corresponding to the Planes of Development viz 3-6; 6-9; and 9-12 or 6 – 12; 12-15 and 15-18 or 12 – 18. -age groups are not correlated to grades, nor are they divided in others ways according to achievement levels or normative standards.

Principle 2: Montessori schools accommodate an extended period of uninterrupted selfchosen activity – a period during which children can choose their own activity and work undisturbed for a minimum of three hours.

Principle 3: Rewards and Punishments are not used in a Montessori environment. Principle 4: A prepared environment is a critical component of Montessori Pedagogy. The prepared environment the children using it;

valorisation; pared.

Principle 5: The adults in the Montessori environment exhibit and apply the principles of Montessori pedagogy through -intervention while at the same time not abandoning the child; of the environment rather than as a teacher in the conventional sense; Development.

Principle 6: Montessori schools develop curriculum guidelines which conform with the vision of child development and the educative goals outlined by Maria Montessori. Principles adopted at the 2011 SAMA AGM

Is a Montessori school the right place for my child? Yes! For your assurance, a successful Montessori school strives to answer each of the following questions positively, and SAMA assists them in this ideal. Q.Are the children: ... YES TO ALL THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS... • Respected at all times so that their personal dignity is constantly upheld? • Given the responsibility for their actions and choices and so encouraged to develop spontaneous self-discipline? • Free to learn at their own pace? • Allowed to work undisturbed, either by an adult or another child? • Working with real objects? • Free to choose activities that interest them, even though the choice may be to avoid the academic area all day? • Free to do individual or group work? • Free to work at a table or on a mat on the floor? • Free to choose any activity from a shelf although it may be too advance for him/her (one can always turn it into a positive activity for the child, e.g. to polish or dust it)? • Given access to work that engages the hand and the mind? • Given unlimited opportunity to repeat any activity as long as she/he likes? • Working for the satisfaction of doing the activity itself, rather than motivated by some external reward, e.g. you can go outside after you have done something indoors? • Allowed to sit quietly doing nothing (in solitude)? • Given indirect presentations before receiving presentations, e.g. many I spy games before being presented the sand paper letters? • Writing before reading? • Is your environment very ordered, with a place for everything and everything always in its place? • Are the shelves low so the activities are displayed at the child’s height and narrow so the child can successfully lift materials off the shelf and put them back? • Does the child’s work cycle include fetching his/her own materials and putting them back ready for the next person to use? • Is each activity arranged and set up in a progressive and orderly way? • Do the children care for the order in the environment?

Open Your Heart To Goodness By LOUISE L. HAY

The act of forgiveness takes place in your own mind. It really has nothing to do with the other person. When we blame another, we give our power away because we’re placing the responsibility for our feelings on someone else. People in our lives may behave in ways that trigger uncomfortable responses in us. However, they didn’t get into our minds and create the buttons that have been pushed. Taking responsibility for our own feelings and reactions is mastering our ‘ability to respond.’ In other words, we learn to consciously choose rather than simply react. We can’t talk about resentment without also talking about forgiveness. Forgiving someone doesn’t mean that we condone their behaviour. The act of forgiveness takes place in our own mind. It really has nothing to do with the other person. The reality of true forgiveness lies in setting ourselves free from holding on to the pain. It’s simply an act of releasing ourselves from the negative energy. Forgiveness doesn’t mean allowing the painful behaviours or actions of another to continue in your life. Sometimes, forgiveness means letting go. You forgive them and release them. Taking a stand and setting healthy boundaries are often the most loving things you can do – not only for yourself, but for the other person as well. I truly believe that there are no mistakes. When our hearts are closed and we feel resentment and anger and sadness, it’s hard to see anything good. Yet when our hearts are open, it’s as if so much of that negativity disappears and we’re able to release these old thoughts and reawaken to joy. For each of us, there’s always joy inside. And we need to know how very perfect we are as we are.

No matter how much chaos may be going on around us, no matter how many things may be going wrong or not the way we want them to, no matter what our bodies may be doing at the moment – we can love and accept ourselves. For the truth of us – the very truth of our being – is that we’re eternal. We have always been and we always will be. And that part of ourselves goes on forever. Rejoice that this is so. As we love and accept ourselves exactly as we are, it makes it easier to go through the so-called difficult times. We’re no longer fighting ourselves. We’re accepting. We’re becoming tender. We’re cherishing ourselves. We’re comforting ourselves and making it easier for ourselves. See yourself standing in front of a mirror looking into you own eyes and saying, I love and accept you exactly as you are. And breathe. Just let yourself feel what you’re feeling. You don’t have to be perfect. You’re already perfect as you are. You are you. You’re exactly what you’ve chosen to be in this lifetime. Of all the bodies and all the personalities that were available, you chose to be who you are – to experience this world, this lifetime, through your body, through your personality. So love your choice, for it is part of your spiritual evolution.

Investing in your child’s health is investing in the future Being a parent in today’s world is a balancing act at best. Financial, technological and social bombardment in a world where work is ever demanding and personal time incredibly limited takes its toll on daily family life. Giving your children the best is every good parents intention – but simply not always physically possible. One of the biggest concerns for children today is healthcare – health and well being affects development, social integration and ability to perform well at school and in extra murals. ADD and ADHD are on the increase and with education itself being such an enormous expense in the average South African home, how do we also provide the best medical care for our loved ones without being bankrupt? BodyTalk seems to have answered just that question and a whole lot more! This first truly integrated holistic energy medicine practice is taking the world by storm. The basic premise is that we physically store emotions, memories and pathological belief systems in all of the cells of the body, in the various glands, organs and tissues, as opposed to only the brain. Eventually, these overly stored emotions and memories result in very physical health problems and disorders – cancer, depression, high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, anorexia, the list is endless. BodyTalk allows the body's energy systems to be re-synchronized so they can operate as nature intended. Each system, cell, and atom is in constant communication with each other at all times. Through exposure to the stresses

of day-to-day life, however, these lines of communication can become compromised or disconnected, which then leads to a decline in physical, emotional and/or mental well-being. Reconnecting these lines of communication enables the body's internal mechanisms to function at optimal levels, thus repairing and preventing disease while rapidly accelerating the healing process. In this way, BodyTalk stimulates the body's innate ability to balance and heal itself on all levels. No medication is required and because BodyTalk is completely natural, it doesn’t adversely affect any medication you may currently be taking either. In Children with ADD and ADHD BodyTalk facilitates the brain’s ability to self-repair from any number of factors leading to improved brain function, and improved cognitive development. Children who are treated with BodyTalk are found to be calmer, more responsive and naturally less impulsive. Teaching children some of the basic balancing BodyTalk offers, will have a profound effect on your child’s day to day ability to cope with school, tasks and their emotions, whilst minimising stress and improving

intercellular communication resulting in improved concentration and focus. Just 3 minutes a day will change your family’s health and happiness forever. While BodyTalk is not a substitute for conventional medical care, almost every condition has been found to respond positively to BodyTalk because it furthers your body’s natural healing efforts. So even if BodyTalk is not being used as the primary mode of healing, it will help you heal faster. Many children have experienced relief from the symptoms of colic, asthma, puberty hormonal changes, ADD/ADHD, fears or phobias around school, exam stress, teachers, bullying and concentration challenges. Children enjoy BodyTalk, because it is non invasive and gentle.

establish Yes/No communication. This communication is called neuromuscular biofeedback, which is similar to applied kinesiology. By understanding that your body has an inherent knowledge of itself, the BodyTalk Practitioner is able to quickly and easily ask your body what communication circuits have become compromised and in which order these lines of communication need to be re-established for the fastest possible healing process to occur.

Health, Awareness and Education BodyTalk isn’t just for practitioners, techniques are taught to clients so that they can help themselves at home too. BodyTalk Access is a one day class designed to be used by anyone. These five simple techniques can bring about a significant improvement in health and once learned in the one-day Access class, they can be implemented in less than 10 minutes. You will have these powerful tools for health for the rest of your life. It is the hope of BodyTalk Access to reach communities and countries around the world as well as families, and give them options to take their health back into their own hands, literally.

Having a BodyTalk Session Sessions are easy, safe and comfortable; they are done with the client fully clothed. A BodyTalk session usually lasts between 15 and 45 minutes. The length of a session is not indicative of the quality of the session or the results that occur; as even the simplest sessions can be quite profound. The bodymind knows just how many changes and corrections it is ready to initiate in any given session, and will therefore indicate when the session is complete and may even establish a time when you may need to return for a follow-up session. You and your Practitioner often begin your session by discussing your health status and whatever other personal issues you may wish to address. Then, you will either relax in a chair or on a treatment table while the practitioner, positioned at your side, will gently use your arm in such a manner to

THE AFRICAN POULTICE STORY By Just B During my first year after school I worked in Paris as an Au Pair and had the opportunity to travel around Europe. This is where my love for travel and other cultures began. My own struggle with an undiagnosed illness took me to the hands of Lilian Tibshraeney’s Reflexology. My rapid recovery then lead me to study this amazing art and I qualified at the end of 1993. Needless to say my passion for Holistic therapies sprouted. I practiced as a therapist up until 2008, constantly studying new therapies, after which I then turned to teaching these arts. To date I lecture on 20 different subjects as well as writing some of the course content. I have been fortunate enough to study Thai massage in Bangkok and Yoga in India, as well as working on the cruise ships which is where I learnt the art of the Thai Poultice massage. On returning back to South Africa and resuming my teaching career I realized that there was no one teaching this specialized therapy. More than that though, why use the Thai poultice when my own country is filled with wondrous herbs and oils. I then took it upon myself to create a proudly South African Poultice. With 14 years Aromatherapy experience and study of Phytotherapy, this task was a plausible challenge for me. One of the drives behind the design is for them to be friendly to use on all people, no matter the health conditions, age, sex and creed. ‘Le Petit Poultice’ has been fashioned after my first love – Paris. More than that, it is due to the French that Aromatherapy has found its place in the western world as Grasse remains one of the essential oil production capitals. The ingredients used are selected for their gentle yet effective properties to ensure the safe treatment of infants. Our children paint the future, molded by our own attitudes. Calm children paint the ‘peace-full’ picture. When Hot Stone massage was the new kid on the block, there was hardly a spa or a salon that did not offer it. It’s my mission and vision of the African Poultice massage to be on every healing and wellness centre’s ‘menu’. www.theafricanpoultice.co.za.

Can healthy food make kids smarter?

Brain food is real - and so is “brain-draining” food. So say Australian researchers who checked up on the diets of 7,000 little kids and then looked at their IQs eight years later. The study, from the University of Adelaide, found a connection:

 

Kids who were still being breastfed at six months and regularly ate good-for-you foods like beans, cheese, fruit and vegetables at 15 and 24 months had an IQ up to two points higher by age eight. In contrast, kids who regularly munched on cookies, chocolate, sweets, soft drinks and chips in the first two years of life - had IQs were two points lower by age eight.

This isn’t the first study to find a connection between what kids eat early in life and their later intelligence - at least the kind of intelligence measured on an IQ test. In 2011, an on-going British study called the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children found that toddlers who ate more processed, fatty foods had slightly lower IQs. And the more healthy stuff a toddler ate - like fish and produce - the higher their scores. The British researchers scored the diets of the toddlers, ages 1 to 3. For every one point increase in processed foods they ate, their IQs at age 8 were 1.67 points lower. And for every one point increase in healthy food, IQs at age 8 were 1.2 points higher. The interesting thing was, early diets were linked with later IQ even in kids whose diets got better or worse after age 3 - suggesting that there’s an important early window for helping kids’ brains be all they can be. That makes sense. Kids’ brains grow fastest in the first three years of life - when connections between brain cells are made at a rapid rate. What’s the best brain food once babies and toddlers are eating solid food? Here’s what experts recommend: Babies

Ages 4 to 8 months: Continue to offer breast milk or baby formula. Once your child has tried several types of baby cereals successfully, introduce cooked and strained fruit and vegetables. Offer 2-3 tablespoon servings at most. Start with vegetables, and then introduce fruit, so that fruit’s sweetness doesn’t make veggies less appealing. Small amounts of finger foods like Melba toast, noodles, graham crackers, toast strips are OK, too. Ages 8 -12 months: Add strained or finely chopped meats - especially important by age 8 months if your baby is breastfed, because breast milk is not a good source of iron. Offer only one new meat per week in 3 - 4 tablespoon servings. Increase serving size of fruits and vegetables to 3-4 tablespoons four times a day. Cooked egg yolk is OK 3-4 times a week; skip egg whites before age 1 because some babies are sensitive to it.

Toddlers ages 1- 3 years

    

Dairy: 2 cups a day. This includes milk, cheese and yogurt. Toddlers should drink whole milk until age 2, then can transition to low-fat or fat-free. Fruit: 1 cup per day. This can include chopped fresh fruit, cooked fruit, fruit canned in juice, unsweetened frozen fruit, and ½ cup of 100 percent juice. (Limit juice to 4-6 ounces a day.) Vegetables: 1 cup a day; 1 ½ cups a day at age 3. Veggies should be soft, in small pieces and wellcooked. Grains: 3 ounces a day; 4-5 ounces a day by age 3 - half from whole-grain sources. An ounce equals 1 slice of bread, 1 cup of ready-to-eat cereal, or ½ cup of cooked rice, cooked pasta, or cooked cereal like oatmeal. Meat, eggs and beans: 2 ounces; 3-4 ounces by age 3. One ounce equals: 1 ounce of meat, poultry or fish, ¼ cup cooked dry beans, or 1 egg.

Healthy hair & scalp CHOICE OF NATURAL PRODUCTS

 no sls or silicones  no synthetic colours or dyes  no parabens

www.OrganicChoice.co.za

Switching to natural hair colouring During the last few years many imported beauty brands, labelled to be natural, have entered the South African market. For most people it is very difficult to judge whether they are truly natural as it requires more than average knowledge about ingredients and processes. For those few of us who have this knowledge it is very frustrating to find out that almost all of these brands are not what they claim to be. This includes hair colouring ranges which are sold in health shops and customers are misled to believe they are buying safer products. The debate about chemicals present in conventional hair dyes became very heated in UK and USA since 2011, following a few cases of severe allergic reactions to hair dyes. The death of Julie McCabe (UK) in November last year, who was in coma for over a year after colouring with popular hair dye, made many people question the safety of ingredients in hair colouring products. The suspected cause of Julie’s death is PPD – a common chemical ingredient found in almost all hair colouring products. What is actually used to make hair dyes? Typical hair dye contains at least 3 main chemical components: 1. Synthetic ingredients (such as Ammonia) which open up the hair cuticles. 2. Synthetic bleach agents (such as Peroxides) which remove natural hair colour molecules from the cortex. 3. Synthetic colours (like PPD - para-phenylenediamine), which are deposited in the place of the natural hair colour molecules. The whole process causes a drastic interference in hair structure and chemical balance and everybody who has dyed their hair knows that it is not the same anymore. Big manufacturers claim that severe allergic reactions to the components in conventional hair dyes are very rare, but the number of people getting reactions is increasing with many young people being affected. It is believed that the reason for this is the fact that we start using hair dyes from a much younger age and use it more often than previous generations, plus the increased percentage of chemicals in hair dyes. Another reason health societies point is that the load of chemicals from various sources, including beauty products, is getting too much for our bodies. What are the alternatives for those who seek natural alternatives to hair dyes? There are few completely natural hair colouring products such as Aubrey’s Organics Hair Colour, Pallete by Nature, and Logona. Until recently none of these ranges were available locally, but since last year Logona has stepped into South Africa. The only disadvantage of natural hair colour is that repeated applications are required and many people feel disappointed that their grey hairs are not covered completely. Before switching to natural hair colouring health conscious customers need to understand how natural pigments work and what to expect. The first thing to know about 100% natural hair colour is that these semi-permanent colours work differently: - there is no penetration into the inner shaft of the hair, - there is no removing of natural hair colour molecules and - there are no synthetic colour molecules replacing natural

ones. Natural hair colours only form a colour coat on top of each hair, on the cuticles. The existing colour (natural or previously dyed) will shine through. Results will be very individual and grey will always be much lighter after only 1 application. The best way to get satisfactory results with grey hair is the following: 1. Use clay based natural cleansing product (Logona Colour Plus) to gently remove any residues on the hair from previous styling or other hair treatments. Ingredients like Silicone form a layer on top of the hair and if not removed will prevent plant pigments from bonding. 2. Apply natural hair colour only on grey areas and leave from 30min to 2hours depending on shade used. Lighter shades have to be left on hair for about 30-40 min while darker shades will need to stay longer - up to 2 hours. 3. Wash well. Follow with Colour Conditioner (Logona Colour Conditioner), leave for 4-5 min and rinse. The conditioner will seal the colour coat.

4. Next day do the second application on the whole head – follow the same procedure. 5. If still not happy with the results on greys – apply again to grey areas only. Ideally after the first 3 applications it will be best to use natural hair colour every 2-3 weeks to keep the intensity of colour results and roots covered. Please, remember that lightening of hair and dramatic change of colour is not possible with 100% natural hair colours. Persevere and your hair will be healthy with beautiful natural colours! Broken Food!

Adults. This post is for you so please put down the cup you’re rinsing and try to focus. Since you’re the president of the world and need to check your cell phone screen often for updates on science, place your mobile device somewhere off limits like the park these days. Even though the grocery store is bursting with options, one of the main toddler complaints I keep hearing has to do with broken food. Adults, you don’t look cute or smart when you hand your child broken anything. You come off as rude and disrespectful. Yesterday my mama handed me 1/3 of a granola bar and several lights went out in my head. I cried on and off for thirty minutes. Today is for healing. It is common knowledge that eating broken food leads to a rapid loss of life-force not to mention it tastes different/awful. The molecules in, say, a heart healthy chocolate chip cookie, are designed to be consumed in round form. When you serve it in a broken half moon the elementary particles hurt your toddler’s brain and feelings. Do you want that to happen or do you strive to be a loving person? Maybe it will help to think about why you decided to become a parent. Most likely you were bored and looking for someone to serve. Now that you have the opportunity to make your life mean something, do your best. Wake up with a smile on your face and say this fourteen times, “Broken food is disgusting, when I serve it I look a little ugly.” Those of you who operate cracker factories have the responsibility to innovate until proper packaging is developed that can preserve the integrity of each individual cracker. Half the product in those boxes has to be thrown out due to chipped edges and premature crumbification. I find it very curious that bottles of wine are always stored impeccably. When it comes to beverages you adults seem to know just what to do. Crackers aren’t the only foods that are prone to breakage. Pieces of fruit, bread, even rice can be too broken for consumption. Trying to manually put a crust corner back on a piece of toast or conceal brokenness in other poorly thought out ways is embarrassing for both parties. Broken rice is called couscous in some circles and will devastate your family. Please go ahead and serve it if you don’t care about anyone but yourself. That’s fine. You might be asking yourself, “What do I do with all of this broken food?” First, blame yourself. After that you have two simple choices. Either eat it in private or throw it away. Just because your toddler may or may not have eaten trash in the past doesn’t mean he or she is an actual trash can. The next time your toddler expresses a bit of upset over being handed something broken, stifle your laughter, calm your tantrum and be professional. Customer service isn’t for everyone but maintain a teachable spirit and you should be fine.

PREGNANCY AND BIRTHING By Daniel Hofinger

This article serves to inform birthing mothers about common medical birthing practices and their potentially devastating effects. It is not meant to instill fear, but rather to empower women to take charge of their own labour, to make informed choices and to provide what is best for both her and her baby There is a certain amount of fear and confusion around childbirth, and the ability for a woman to have a natural labour, that its important to understand a little bit more about the process, why women are so afraid, and educate ourselves around this delicate topic. There are over 5000 different species of mammals on the planet, all of which give birth naturally. Why is it then that the human doubts in their own bodies ability to give birth? The problem often is that so much fear has been instilled into women, mostly by what they are fed through the main stream media, books, movies and the medical profession. Believing that we are going the safest route we hand over our birthing process to doctors, and what should be a natural process and a rite of passage for both the woman and the baby, now becomes a ‘medical condition’.

The Cascade of Intervention Many maternity care interventions have unintended side effects during labour, and often these effects are then the new problems that are ‘solved’ with further intervention, which in turn create even more problems. This chain of events is known as the ‘Cascade of Intervention’, and can change the course of a woman’s labour in important ways. Let’s explore this a little further. Doctors routinely put the mother on a drip to hydrate her and to give her nutrients. This is mostly

not necessary. By inserting a needle into her hand hampers her when she wants to clasp her hands or move about freely during contractions. This small intervention interferes with her ability to labour properly as it can lead to the production of extra adrenaline which in turn slows down labour. The freedom to walk around with a drip in tow is another frustration. In fact, doctors prefer you to lie down anyway, the most unnatural position to give birth as she has to push the baby out against gravity as opposed to letting gravity help her in a squatting position.

Inducing Labour The next scare could arise if you are not dilating by 1 cm every hour which is when the doctor may strap the laboring woman to a fetal monitor and tell her not to move… how on earth does she do this while she has these contractions happening? The most likely next step for the obstetrician to undertake is to induce the mother by means of artificial hormone stimulation, mainly synthetic Oxytocin and Amniotomy, the breaking of the waters. This brings on the contractions so powerfully and with such small gaps between contractions, that the labouring woman is not able to cope with the pain as her natural endorphins that her body produces as a pain buffer isn’t strong enough anymore. It doesn’t give mom and baby any time to rest. The other factor that we need to consider is that the cervix is at that stage of labour not ready yet to give birth, namely 10cm dilation.

Pain Management Pethidine The effect of this intervention inevitably leads to the very controversial usage of pain killers, Pethidine being the drug of choice. The catch is that Pethidine has not been approved by the FDA and is not safe for pregnant women. Pethidine may have the following consequences: 1. Slowing of maternal respiration and circulation 2. Reduced Oxygen supply to baby, requiring resuscitation at birth, also due to the stunting of the

gag reflex which my cause the baby to breathe fluid into the lungs. 3. Has been shown to delay initiation of bonding and breastfeeding more than any other single drug.

A disempowered labour can often lead to post natal depression and the feeling of having been robbed of a truly magnificent process called birth. Possible after-effects of Caesarean section include the interruption of bonding between mother and infant.

Epidural Natural Birthing The other option is the epidural, inserting a needle and then catheter into the spinal column. This in itself can cause a multitude of complications including a drop in maternal and fetal blood pressure

Episiotomy and Instrument delivery The mother has lost sensation and is unable to push which often results in the next intervention, episiotomy. After the episiotomy, it is common practice to use extraction instruments, either forceps or vacuum extraction to force the infant through the birth canal. The impact of that is often severely traumatic damage to the infant’s head, eyes, nerves that lead to the face, eyes neck and arms. It will most likely cause the mother to tear more also. Suction may affect the membranes surrounding the brain of the infant if the vacuum cup is mistakenly applied over fontanelle of infant. Vacuum extraction is a strong predictor of early cessation of breastfeeding.

Many of these interventions could be avoided in most births if we were able to allow the labour to progress in a safe environment where both baby and mother are supported and allowed their time. A natural labour makes the woman feel empowered and bonded with her child knowing that she did it and no one can take that away from her. I believe that if we are to change our condition as humanity, our physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing, we have to begin with our babies and how we birth them into the world. Following natural birthing processes will lead to a more healthy untraumatized, happy society. One reason why the natural birthing process is so important has to do with the foundational experiences. The first thing that happens to people is usually the most formative - simply because they are the first, birth is foundational because it is the first experiences where the fully developed body and primitive ego are challenged.

C-Section If all else fails. The final resort is a Caesarian section. The first thing to understand about a Csection is that it is a major surgical procedure and recovery time often takes months. C-section rates are climbing at an alarming rate in South Africa with over 90% in the private sector, amongst the highest in the world. I believe the reason for this astronomically high C-section rate is for the doctor’s convenience so that he can schedule it in his diary and not get called out during a dinner party of game of golf. This procedure is a lot more expensive and the private sector mostly has medical aid to cover these fees. The doctor and the hospital and the pharmaceutical industry make more money in less time. That’s better business than waiting for a natural labour to commence without intervention.

Birth, like any foundation of a house, provides a structure on which everything else is built. Without a foundation there can be no structure. Birth and life are intimately connected. When people discover their birth patterns, it is common to hear them say ’Why that’s the way I live my life. How I live my life is a direct reflection of what happened during my birth.’”—Dr William Emmerson, PhD.

To support the mother and baby pre and post natally, I suggest Cranio Sacral therapy, a sublimely gentle yet deep and nurturing modality that can resolve trauma to both mother and infant alike in a gently guided fashion. www.harmonic-touch.com

REIKI - HANDS ON HEALING What is Reiki? REIKI is a truly wonderful gift. It is a gentle and non-invasive ancient natural healing system. It calms, comforts, soothes, relieves pain and speeds up the body¹s natural healing ability; promoting health, balance and vitality. REIKI can transform your life. The word Rei means soul or spirit and Ki means energy. What to Expect. The therapist's hands are gently placed in various positions on or slightly above the body without pressure being applied. The "KI" or life force energy that facilitates the healing flows down through the therapist's palms and fingertips into the receiver's energy field. The therapist does not give of their own energy they simply channel universal energy from the source. You may feel a number of sensations during your REIKI sessions, these could include heat, cold and tingling, you may even experience colour or sound. Sometimes you may feel nothing at all. The outcome of each treatment is determined by your own personal needs and no two people will experience REIKI the same way. Some of the frequent experiences include: • Increased creativity energy and awareness • Emotions are more balanced and appropriate • Stress is managed better and easily released • Accelerated healing and release of toxins • Relief from pain and discomfort • Elevated sense of well being What RASA Offers? We offer an uplifting and inspirational journey of discovery that will transform your life. Our style of teaching is insightful and informed and we run small classes for our Reiki to keep the Reiki training more personal, in addition we provide comprehensive manuals, teaching, mentoring and post-course support.

‘BE A FRIEND’ TO THE IBA-UMNGANI FOUNDATION Founded in 1999, Iba-Umngani Foundation (previously the BE A FRIEND FOUNDATION) supports children that are victims of rape, abuse, neglect and abandonment. They work in conjunction with the FCS (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences) units of the SA Police, by providing them with comfort and rape kits for victims of abuse. All the children that are helped by Iba-Umngani in this way are placed into ‘Safe Houses’ and their identities are protected. COMFORT KITS FOR ABUSED AND/OR ABANDONED CHILDREN A ‘comfort kit’ was designed for children who need to be removed from their homes/environment and placed in a safe house. These children need to be removed for several reasons, including danger to the child due to physical and/or sexual abuse by a household member. These kits are also for abandoned children. Often these children are removed with only the clothes they are wearing. Over and above the abuse they have experienced, being placed in a strange environment is also extremely traumatic for them. Although the children are innocent victims, they feel ‘punished’ by the system by being removed, which then causes secondary trauma. The kit includes a soft cuddly toy, face cloth, towel, soap, shampoo, body lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb/hairbrush, sweets, biscuits, juice, etc. For babies; nappies, baby grow, bottles, milk formula and basic toiletries as well. The items are packed in a nice shoulder bag. Each kit costs approximately R500. The kit helps to restore some human dignity to these traumatized children by giving them something of their own to take with them. Giving them the basic necessities helps them feel more secure while they settle into their new home. These kits are given to the children at the time they are removed. This makes the placement of a child in a new environment less traumatic, which also helps to facilitate their recovery during therapy later on. A total of more than 7000 kits have been donated to date. SURVIVOR KITS FOR RAPE VICTIMS We have been requested by the FCS (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit) of the SA Police Service, to put together a kit for women and young girls who have lived through the trauma of being raped. This kit will be used by the women after they have seen the district surgeon to wash and clean themselves. The Kit enables them to feel comforted and thought of after this terrible ordeal. The kits includes the following (packed in a bag); chocolates, juice, towel, face cloth, soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb/brush, sanitary pads, deodorant, panty, etc. A pamphlet with details of counseling, AVR’s etc. is included. The estimated cost per kit is R500. Iba-Umngani Foundation is a Non-Profit Organization and relies on donations and company sponsorships. Cloud computing is all the rage. It's become the "phrase du jour,” As a metaphor for the Internet, "the cloud" is a familiar cliché, but when combined with "computing," the meaning gets bigger and fuzzier. Some analysts and vendors define cloud computing narrowly as an updated version of utility computing: basically virtual servers available over the Internet. Others go very broad, arguing anything you consume outside the firewall is "in the cloud," including conventional outsourcing. Cloud computing comes into focus only when you think about what IT always needs: a way to increase capacity or add capabilities on the fly without investing in new infrastructure, training new personnel, or licensing new software. Cloud computing encompasses any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that, in real time over the Internet, extends IT's existing capabilities. Who we are: an experienced team of IT professionals that focus on End to End Management of our client's IT infrastructure and resources. We manage companies’ IT. All of IT. By Outsourcing or Co-Outsourcing your IT to aqit® you get a single point of contact and a virtual IT Manager taking care of all your IT management requirements. One throat to choke. One bill to pay. By designing and managing the IT Infrastructure on a converged end to end basis we are able give client’s stability, reliability and reduce the risk of things going wrong. The net result is a saving on clients’ IT capital purchases as well as on-going service fees. Up to 40% savings if we manage the entire IT estate. These savings can be redeployed in order to provide more efficient IT services. We design and source all your IT requirements on an open book basis. Voice/data connectivity, VOIP, PBX, Print/copy/fax, Managed Print Services, UPS/Power, Cabling, Wi-Fi, WAN/LAN, Microsoft licensing and services, Servers, desktop devices, mobile devices the works. aqit® delivers IT Infrastructure Management services from our cloud based CentralCommand Centre. SCHOOL KIDS AND PARENTS – GET OUT YOUR FAVE ‘TEKKIES’

The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is very excited to have been invited to be a part of the Tekkie Tax fundraising initiative that is about to be launched into South Africa in April. Tekkie Tax Day will be on the 31st May and the initiative invites you to wear your sticker and your favourite pair of ‘tekkies’ to work or school. The idea is to purchase a Tekkie Tax sticker for R10 and show where your heart is. There are five sectors to choose from: Animals (this is the sector that the EWT will be included in), Basic community welfare, Children, Disability or Education. The EWT is one of the beneficiaries of all ‘animal’ stickers sold and even a bigger contribution if acquired directly though the EWT. What we need is your company’s buy-in to support this initiative by placing your order for tickets for your staff up front. The campaign summary is available on our website for you to peruse. www.ewt.org.za

Please support this initiative by placing your order for tickets now by contacting Joy Nel on (011) 372-3600 or joyn@ewt.org.za This will become an annual fundraising event and we believe it will be a very resourceful form of funding for the EWT on an annual basis.

The EWT head office is supported by Barloworld, Hans Hoheisen Charitable Trust and DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr

Learning Bags are the perfect solution! By Stacie As a former teacher and now a homeschooling mom with three little ones, I’m continually exploring and researching the best ways to keep my children learning. It can be such a challenge working with my oldest daughter — and keeping the preschoolers engaged, too! A Learning Bag is simply an educational activity stored in a bag (you can also store them in a basket or box)! The idea is much the same as “busy bags”, but I just prefer to call them Learning Bags (or boxes or baskets). I don’t want to just keep my children busy — I want them learning, too! This is a compilation of some of the simple and inexpensive ideas we’ve put into our bags! There are 15 activities of which we will feature a couple here and then you follow the link to Motherhood On A Dime for more fun and games. Where do you store these activities? I recommend plastic zipper bags, the kind with a sliding top, this makes it much easier for little hands to open and close. You can place the bags in a milk crate, box, or even line them up on a bookshelf. When and how do you use them? We use Learning Bags during our school time. While I’m working with my older daughter, the younger two work through the activities. To keep the activities fresh, I rotate eight to ten each week. I pull out each activity and show my daughters how to use them. Then, I allow them to pick the bag they’d like to do first and put the rest on our shelves for easy access. Some of the activities are also wonderful for storing in a purse or bag and pulling out while waiting at a restaurant or out visiting grand parents! Checklist of Supplies Scissors

SEE END OF ARTICLE FOR GIVEAWAY DETAILS Beauty begins from within A problem with most topical creams and cosmetics is that they work on the surface layers of the skin only. They can’t supply important nutrients needed for youthful skin-cell formation, deep within the skin. These nutrients need to be supplied from within the body where skin-cells are growing, resulting in stronger, healthier, hydrated skin that resists premature aging. Ingestible dermaceuticals are taken orally and so are able to reach collagen and elastin skin fibres, from the inside, thereby treating the origin of aging. COLLAGEN PLUS™ SKIN ESSENTIALS supplies ingestible dermaceutical nutrients that nourish your skin, hair and nails A first in South Africa: New Capsule-in-a-Capsule™ technology supplies concentrated skin nourishing and rejuvenating dermaceuticals to the body, in a single capsule daily: Concentrated powder dermaceuticals are contained in the inner capsule; surrounded by liquid dermaceuticals in the outer capsule. This has enabled two products to be combined into one. Collagen, biotin, silicon and vitamin A boost collagen, elastin and keratin synthesis, for flexible, strong and more youthful hair, skin and nail growth. Omega 3 concentrate nourishes the skin from within, thereby improving flexibility and condition. Tocotrienol oil, the best form of vitamin E, nourishes and heals the skin. Astaxanthin is a skin protective antioxidant. Zinc helps with the production of sebum which is important for healthy skin and hair. Take one capsule daily after breakfast. INNER CAPSULE: Collagen, biotin and silicon boost collagen, elastin and keratin synthesis, for flexible, strong and more youthful skin, hair and nail growth. Astaxanthin is a skin protective and rejuvenating antioxidant extracted from algae. OUTER CAPSULE: Vitamin A is important for skin-cell formation and growth Zinc is important for healthy skin and hair. Marine omega 3 concentrate nourishes the skin with essential fatty acids, thereby moisturising and improving flexibility and condition. Tocotrienol oil is a superior form of vitamin E which nourishes and heals the skin, and helps protect against the damages of UV rays.
