Dear Conscious Life Friends Welcome to our final edition of Conscious Life magazine for 2016. To put it mildly, it’s been one heck of a year. Everything has been turned upside down and anything that was not well and truly nailed down ended up on the planet with the lost socks. If you have managed to stay sane and understand what has been going on with the earth energies, and the shifts taking place, then you are probably finding your balance again and getting ready for 2017. For me personally, I feel like I have been turned inside out and have come out at the end of this year with many obstacle courses overcome and many new doors opening for me, and for our magazines. I am totally looking forward to 2017 and I hope you are too. This edition is filled with Retreats, Workshops and mindful healing options for you to choose from to kick off the New Year. There are some inspirational articles on getting back on track and why laughing is so good for you. When last did you laugh until you stomach hurt? It’s such a good feeling. From our side, we wish you all a safe, peaceful and happy holiday season and thank you for being part of our journey through 2016. HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND SEE YOU IN 2017. With much Love

For many South Africans the holidays are tantalisingly close and you’re already mentally dipping your toes into the ocean, but before you’re relaxing on the beach you need to get your car in tiptop shape. Indwe Risk Services gives you an essential checklist so that your car is as ready for the holidays as you are. CHECK YOUR LICENCE It’s pretty easy to forget when you have to renew your car and driver’s licenses, so be sure to check that both are up to date. If you have to renew them before going on holiday, remember that you now have to provide proof of residence.

VEHICLE SERVICE It’s a good idea to get your car serviced, especially if you have a long drive to your holiday destination. This will take care of any major problems and repairs, reducing the risk that you’ll be stuck on the side of the road.

VEHICLE CHECK While your service should make your car roadworthy, take some time to give your vehicle a once-over. This includes checking the tread and pressure of all tyres (including the spare), ensuring that you have enough fluids (e.g. oil and water), that your windscreen has no cracks, that your brakes, belts and battery are in good condition, and that your windscreen wipers and all lights (inside and out) are working. If you’re transporting passengers make sure that the seatbelts are working correctly. Be prepared for a breakdown or emergency by having the following items in the boot of your vehicle: a first-aid kit, water and non-perishable food, jumper cables, a blanket, a flashlight and batteries, a container for petrol, flares, reflective triangles, rope for towing, and basic tools.

PLANNING A GPS is a handy gadget, particularly if you’re travelling somewhere new, as it will help you avoid the frustration of getting lost. Plan your drive in advance so you know your route and where you can stop for breaks and to refuel. Try to avoid peak travel times and always inform a friend or family member about your route and estimated arrival time. Store emergency contact numbers in your phone so they are easily accessible in case you need immediate help. Keep your phone fully charged or have a spare battery.

ON THE DRIVE Get enough sleep before you set off and stay hydrated during your journey. It’s recommended that you stop for a rest every two hours, and where possible let another eligible driver take over. Stopping regularly gives you and your passengers (and especially kids) a chance to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. It’s essential that you stop driving if you are tired. With the extra volumes of traffic on the road during the festive season, it’s important that you take precautions to avoid car trouble by getting your vehicle road-trip ready. Drive safely, be patient and enjoy the journey.

ARE YOU COVERED? Make sure the vehicle you are driving is properly insured, and remember that there are different types of cover, such as comprehensive, third party only, and third party, fire and theft insurance. If you are a passenger in someone else’s vehicle, check that the car you are travelling in is insured. For peace of mind, find out from your broker or insurer what is and is not covered in your policy.

For any assistance speak to an Indwe Risk Services advisor today on 0860 13 13 14.

BUDGET FOR THETIME HOLIDAY SEASON SPENDING QUALITY WITH YOUR KIDS WITHOUT BREAKING THE BUDGET

By Kathryn Main

South Africa is a buy-now, pay-later society. The effects on young people’s financial literacy are thus characterized by the same behaviour patterns as parents and society. These are high credit and high consumer behaviour with very little savings, and in turn high social risk behaviour. Money Savvy Kids(MSK) is working to change this disastrous pattern. According to the National Credit Regulator, about 10.3 million South Africans are finding it difficult to meet their monthly debt repayments. Octogen, which specialises in financial wellbeing, reports that in 2016 the average household spent a massive 49% of after-tax income on monthly debt repayments making it ‘difficult’ to ‘impossible’ to keep up with their debt repayments. Far too many South African consumers go into the festive season saddled with debts they can’t comfortably repay, and with little or no savings and after a holiday spending spree, end up even worse off in the new year.

MSK is not just a product. It is a pathway to developing mind-sets that will ensure South Africa’s children not only work their way out of poverty, but that they have the tools to stay out. On that note, we are offering tips to smart spend this holiday season and have a no worry start to the new year. 

Set a budget for holiday season expenses like presents, gifts and entertainment

Budget for January expenses like school uniforms and stationery and do your back-toschool shopping before your holiday shopping.

Don’t spend what you don’t have! Don't shop on credit.

Gifts are a huge expense. It takes courage not to overspend! Work out some guidelines around buying gifts with your extended family. Once you know who you are buying for, budget an amount per gift, and stick to it.

Don’t be tempted to buy anything other than what you’ve budgeted for. Avoid the impulse purchase!

Keep in mind the old cliché that it’s the thought that counts. Something small and personal, something homemade, or even a heartfelt card, will be well appreciated.

Spend time with friends and family, for instance. If you’re a highly social person, it’s tempting to play host all season. You can just as easily be the life and soul at someone else’s party!

If you are entertaining, don’t be afraid to ask your guests to contribute. Ask each guest to bring along a salad or contribute a dish, and everyone should bring their own drinks.

Making your own decorations (or swapping old ones with friends and family) can reduce costs and be a lot of fun for the whole family.

With a bit of planning which involves budgeting and a lot of smart spending you will step into 2017 debt free and maybe even with a little bit of extra cash in the bank! Start planning now and smart spend, and live within your means !

Meditation and Existential Depression Ice cold isolation visits from time to time and steals away the warmth of connections. By Michael Howard We may feel a sense of separateness or of not belonging. We may be wracked by a sense of loss with profound sadness in our hardest times. This experience may be existential depression if it lasts or worsens over time.

Can meditation help with existential depression?

What is existential depression? In a state of existential depression, dark fearful presences impinge upon our consciousness or sneak around our sub-conscious. Darkness asks, “What meaning does life have?” It taunts, “You are just an insignificant little organism, alone in an arbitrary world. Scary! Your life has no impact. There is no meaning. And then you die. That is all there is to it.” The dark fear can be devastating. It leads to catatonia in the worst cases of existential depression.

Many people never experience this depressing scenario of isolation and resultant dark fear. They never feel existential depression. Maybe it’s because they have a more durable constitution. Or maybe it’s because they manage to ignore the occasional emergence of the darkness from the recesses of their subconscious. Or perhaps some people just don’t have that dark presence lurking within them. “They’re not cursed,” some might say. They’re not blessed either.

Curse or blessing? We can get philosophical relief from the fear of meaninglessness by imagining how the world could be. We can allow ourselves to imagine we are loved and connected. These imaginings are not childish fantasies. They ring true. They are just as ingrained in our subconscious as the darkness. Jung called our universal experiences of dark and light the archetypes of the collective unconscious. The concept originated in ancient Greece. Mystics call them spiritual experiences. Without darkness, we would not hear the trumpet beckoning from our sub-conscious towards the light. Without contrast there is no light. It takes darkness to appreciate light. It takes a journey through isolation to experience eternal love where isolation is gone and belonging rules. Our curse is our blessing. Archetypes or spiritual experiences, or whatever we call the deepest realms of ourselves, convince us that space and time – and the ever-lurking threat of isolation that comes with space and time – are illusory.

The illusion that binds us It is imaginable that space and time are only temporal excitations of infinite and eternal energy. Particles of matter in space and time emerge and either evolve or disappear. There are infinite and eternal universe-loads of matter emerging and either evolving or disappearing. Matter that ‘survives’ and evolves over millennia in a particular space and time becomes conscious. This consciousness is self-conscious because it is of a discrete ensemble of matter in a particular space and time. Billions of infants in our space and time become billions of self-conscious egos. These selfconscious egos, by virtue of their discreteness, are prone to a sense of isolation. Ego emerges from the moment of conception. This ego grows in self-consciousness, it starts to feel the fear of being isolated – isolated from its mother and isolated from the home it left.

The degree of isolation depends on the matter the child inherited, and the early circumstances of that child’s life. Fear emerges quite naturally from the sense of being isolated and being up against billions of other egos. Natural imperfections like greed, anger, pride, lust and envy stem from fear. Imperfections of human society emerge from these states of human being. These imperfections infect every part of material life in space and time. They infect nature, politics, economics and religion. They lead to crime, war, famine and destruction of the natural world and every aspect of matter.

The reality that frees us But there are no particles, space or time in the infinite and eternal energy that underlies them. There is no consciousness of self. No ego. There is only unity in diversity – a mysterious remnant in the subconscious of our origin and destiny. A reality that can only be quasi-known, never understood or explained like evolved sets of neurons wish. This infinite and eternal is experienced as benevolent and nurturing to our deepest selves. So we call it love in our human attempts to know it. It manifests as various archetypes, mythological stories and spiritual deities throughout history and across cultures. But it is one underlying reality. We can sense this so-called love as distant as it may seem at times. The imperfect world seems perfect because of it. The fear of isolation is relieved by it. Letting go and letting it closer is the most effective antidote to existential depression.

Meditation: from illusion to reality But how do we do this? The answer has become so trite in postmodern western society we can hardly believe it. But it is a true. The answer is meditation. It should be noted that meditation alone might not be enough. Sometimes a multi-pronged approach is required to overcome the pain of existential depression, including medication. However, the goal of healing is to break through the illusion to reality. In the long-term, as a lifestyle practice, there is no better path to this breakthrough than meditation. A daily practice of meditation brings this thing we call love closer because it switches off all the preoccupations of discrete self and so opens space for infinite and eternal energy to be experienced. Meditation leads gently, over time, to the experience of belonging, to the experience of being loved by some benevolent other. It taps into the archetypal lover ingrained in our subconscious. Each day we find the darkness of isolation brightened slightly by this love. Each day the illusory pain is battled back by the reality of love. We find the imperfections of our egos balanced by the seven aspects of love.

Existential depression is real and painful. But it is the path to the most wonderful light. We should not deny it, ignore it or avoid it. Nor should we hold onto it. We should experience it as it is or as it isn’t. We must travel through our darkness and let it pass again and again with commitment and trust. It is a more arduous journey for some than for others. Regardless though, a daily practice of meditation is the best therapy on this arduous journey.

Let go of trying to Find the Answers

By Samantha Lewis

Let go of trying to find the answers to a life that worked – it seemed as if everyone around me had a life that worked. I have discovered that it’s questions, not answers that change everything. Questions open the door to all possibilities. Questions take you beyond all the conclusions that you have about life, about others and about you. Two great questions that have brought me out of the search of finding the answers are: “What else is possible?” and, “How does it get any better than this?”

It does not matter what you are searching for, or what you desire to change. Ask these questions! Even if you ask them just for FUN! These questions are designed to open up the possibility that there is something more than you know or have ever known. Questions open up the possibility that YOU are greater than you have are willing to see you are. What if you are more than what you think you are? These two questions can change whatever is going on for you even if you having a great moment, ask ‘How does it get better than this?’, the question is the invitation to more of that! You can also let go of thoughts, feelings and emotions that don’t belong to you by asking a question. What I mean here is that we are all more psychic and aware than we are willing to acknowledge. We are constantly picking up feelings, emotions and thoughts that are not ours. About, 98% of the thoughts, feelings and emotions that you have don’t even belong to you. Have you ever walked into a restaurant to have a coffee and you ended up ordering the largest breakfast on the menu? What if you were listening to the hungry people all around you thinking the thoughts were yours? The next time you feel sad or depressed, ask, “Who does this belong to?” If you notice that you feel lighter when you ask the question, it’s because it never belonged to you in the first place. Have fun with this one.

Questions change the direction of anything you have come to a conclusion about.

How to Find Strength in the Darkest Moments

By Gilbert Ross

When everything seems lost and you go through that darkest patch or through a very difficult life passage, where do you look for hope and strength? Who do you turn to? Perhaps friends and family who are always open and ready to give you loving support or perhaps some fortunate new connections and experiences that light up the way out. When we are supported, cared for, encouraged and guided by others, what happens is that we get enough space to shift our attention from our fears, pain and anxiety to our inner guide and strength. So in reality although people and situations can help us a lot with starting the process of healing and finding our way home, it is ultimately by looking inwards into ourselves that we find hope, strength and courage. When you feel powerless, briefing loss, feeling insecure and lost, there are four actions you should first look for – I call them the four pillars of inner power: Honouring, Remembering, Trusting and Loving. These actions will find your way when you feel lost, reconnect you when you feel disconnected, uplift you when you feel broken and fill you in when you feel emptied. I will go through them briefly and touch upon what I believe are the most important ones. Of course they are simple in themselves and they can be expanded to cover something which is more specific to your life or situation but the ones below do suffice on their own. You can write them down, chant them, sing them in your morning shower (seriously) or whatever it is that you feel expresses yourself naturally and with ease.

Honouring Honour the Heart: Unlike your mind, It is always true to your path and Life purpose. In it you will find strength you never thought you could possess. Honour the Spirit: It is there although you can’t see it or perceive it. Ultimately that is all you are beyond this short-lived embodiment. So honour it and you are honouring a much larger truth about You. Honour the Infinite Self: You are an infinite being connected to everything that is and will ever be. You know this at some level if you learn to honour your heart and spirit more. You will see it and live it. It gives you enormous power. Honour your Presence: When you are present in the moment you bring your self to come fully into being rather than being dispersed in futile and petty worries, thoughts and fantasies. When you are present you are fully You – shining, beautiful and powerful. Honour it. It gives you enormous strength. Honour your Divinity: Whether you acknowledge it or not – you are Divine. That is part of your nature. When you recognise and honour the divine in you and in others, you are allowing it to flow through you. Honour your Fallibility & Humanity: You are as fallible and human as much as you are divine – this is the truth of your incarnation. Celebrate it and accept it. Do not be ashamed or feel guilt of your mistakes or you would be going against what is perfectly fine and natural. Honour the Guru inside of You: Yes your inner Self is infinitely wise because it is connected to source at some level. It is a living Guru inside of you that you do not often talk to, ask for guidance or honour. Honour the Guru because it is unconditionally waiting to guide you in every step you take.

Remembering Remember you are Free: No matter what beliefs society has transmitted to you along the years, the truth is that you are free. You were made to be free and follow your purpose, passion and instincts. You were not born to be chained to a set of ideas, a desk, a clock, fear, judgment or an institution. What we call ‘free spirits’ know this in their heart. They know with inner conviction that we are enslaved if and only if we allow it to be. It is our choice. Remember you are more than you think you are: When you are caught in grief or confusion, your egocentered ‘little self’ is the one directing the drama. It closes off the space for your more conscious ‘big Self’ to allow presence and a broader view on things. It makes you forget that you are more than you think you are. Remember that you are much more than a victim caught up in the drama. You are free, powerful and infinite. Call on this thought and how it changes things. Remember you are Powerful…very Powerful: We are led as sheep by authorities, belittled and disheartened by certain life situations and experiences. We are made to believe we are powerless and we live with this belief all our life. The truth is that you have the power to change, to love, to heal, to discover, to go beyond your limits and to alter your future.

Remember you are infinite – this is just a moment: When we are blocked and debilitated it’s because we give our energies and power to the problem. We fear that the problem is here to stay or that the pain will linger. This is the short-sightedness of the ego. It doesn’t allow us to see how short-lived and temporary the problem is compared to our infinity. Remember you are not alone but part of a much larger community: You can’t do it alone and by all means you shouldn’t. Remember that you are part of a much larger community both here physically and also spiritually, beyond what your eyes can perceive. Remember you have chosen this path long time before you were born: Yes the life challenges you face are not haphazard or meaningless. The path was partly chosen by you and partly a result of Karmic seeds you have sown in the past.

Trusting Trust your Heart: Trust the wisdom and intuition that comes from that inner space we call the heart. It will not only guide but give you refuge, strength and resilience. When you are overwhelmed by a hundred thoughts and fears, look hard for that gentle feeling of presence and intuition that comes from your heart. Trust your Higher Consciousness: When we let our deepest fears and anxieties overtake our lives in desperate moments, we become momentarily unconscious in the sense that we are not awake or fully aware of ourselves. We are just reacting on auto drive to instinctual fear. It is precisely in those moments that we need to look for ways to become more conscious – and one of the best and fastest ways is by trusting it and allowing it to happen. Trust Life and the Multiverse: Instead of getting paranoid and angry that life and the universe is conspiring against you, switch perspective and trust it for being congenial and supportive. I am not a law of attraction advocate in any way, but what I can say that in my own personal experience, making this switch ALWAYS changed everything around. Trusting that Everything will be Fine: And of course this goes hand in hand with the point above. When in doubt, lost and confused by the storm of life, stay still and remind yourself that it is going to be fine and that your fears are not supporting you. When those doubts and fears start dissolving keep moving on with courage.

Loving Love Yourself: Be kind and gentle to yourself. Do you realise that sometimes we are the harshest with ourselves not others or situations? We criticise ourselves, self-talk negatively and beat ourselves up. This is unnecessary in normal situations and downright unhelpful in very difficult situations. In those dark moments, what you need to start from is Self-love and being kind to yourself. This is not the same as self-pity. Loving yourself is being open, soft and nonjudgmental. Love Openly & Unconditionally: Be open to give and receive love. Some say love is the greatest healer and in many ways that’s true. Both giving and receiving love is like an instant vibe changer. It makes you lighter, happier and fuller. Even your biochemistry changed accordingly. Love the wisdom of your higher Self for it is One and the same with God: This is in line with the point about honouring your inner Guru. As mentioned, you are connected to source at some point and your higher Self is an infinite resource of wisdom and creativity which is waiting to be tapped into. It’s purpose is only one – the best of you.

WISE WORDS BY NEALE DONALD WALSCH You need not be concerned about money. Be concerned, instead, about joy. How much joy are you experiencing in this moment? How much joy are you bringing to this moment? The joy you experience will be the joy you bring. If you are waiting for joy to be brought to you, you do not understand what you are doing here. And if you think that joy has anything to do with money, you really do not understand what you are doing here. There is a person waiting right now, right this very minute, for you to uplift them. Do that...and you will be rich.

The universe is conspiring in your favor. It is placing before you in every moment all of the right and perfect people, circumstances, and situations with which to answer life's only question: Who am I. Have you decided yet?

Your job, your invitation from the Universe, is to give people back to themselves. It is really a very easy thing to do -- yet it can affect a person mightily. All you have to do is look for the best in that person, and then show it to them, right then and there. Describe it. Admire it. Thank them for it. Do this for three people every day and watch how your whole life can change. At last you will realize what you are doing here. All the rest will be just stuff and nonsense.

On the day you leave your body -what I like to call your Continuation Day -- you will be greeted by everyone you have ever loved in any way for any reason...and, standing in front of the group, every person who has been so very dear to you. It will be a grand and glorious reunion, with joy and laughter and pure wonderment filling every heart and soul! We are not simply biological creatures, the result of a happenstance of chemical processes, walking the earth just trying to get through it all with a minimum of harm to ourselves and others. We are Creations of the Deity, Products of the Divine, God. If you Individuations truly desire toofexperience the world of your highest imagining, then you must love unconditionally, share freely, communicate openly, and create cooperatively. You must decide that you are truly are all One, that what is good for another is good for you.

The Universe invites you now to be someone who is making a life, rather than a living. Move toward your passion. Express through your daily work and your daily activities what it is that lights up your soul. Do not believe those who say that you cannot do this. Do it anyway.

In every moment of every day, through a thousand individual manifestations of Itself, is Divinity revealing Itself. Yet we do not see. Or we see, but do not believe. We do not believe the evidence of our own eyes. We do not hear the truth in the sounds of silence. Listen to your Self today. You have been telling yourself something very important for days now. Today, listen more closely. And heed. Trust the still, small voice within. Your soul is gently leading you to your next step.

You are beautiful. Yes, you. Look at yourself in the mirror. If God has ever created anything in the universe more beautiful than you, it is a secret. Because nowhere can it be found. You are a being of beauty. Share the beauty of you today, and you will experience it! Neale Donald Walsch is a modern day spiritual messenger whose words continue to touch the world in profound ways. Neale spent the majority of his life thriving professionally, yet searching for spiritual meaning before experiencing his now famous conversation with God. The Conversations with God series of books that emerged from those encounters has been translated into 37 languages, touching millions and inspiring important changes in their day-to-day lives.

You may be facing a challenge right now, or perhaps an important question you've been pondering, but you're not facing this alone. You can ask God for help. You, too, can have a conversation with God. I promise. So just take a breath right now and ask God to tell you exactly what you need to hear. Then...listen. Carefully.

You are eternally abundant. I know, I know...it sometimes doesn't seem that way, but the truth is, you always have everything you need, right here, right now. Do you know how I know? You're still here. If you hadn't always been given everything you ever needed, you wouldn't be here. Now all that is necessary is for you to understand this deeply. Then, stop worrying. You'll be okay.

There is nothing that is permanent. There is nothing that stays. Everything goes. Which is an interesting fact about life. Everything goes. And when you under stand this, everything goes. There are no restrictions anymore. You can do anything you wish, say anything you wish, think anything you wish, because you're not trying to hold onto anything anymore

We are given the gift of God's joy and God's peace in our heart, and offered an invitation to share it with everyone whose life we touch. I have come to see that all of life's circumstances, conditions, events, and experiences have been sent to me as opportunities to do that.

What is NLP? NLP is a proven technology for personal achievement that helps people to understand themselves and those around them more fully, in such a way as to maximize personal growth and excellence. Technically, NLP is the study of human excellence. NLP seeks to understand the natural learning processes of how great achievers use their minds to produce excellent results. Varied occupations such as managers and therapists, teachers and nurses, athletes and artists, can all benefit from the technology NLP has to offer in their particular profession or passion. What are the thinking patterns that successful people use in the pursuit of their activities, their passion and their mission in life?  How do people who are so good at what they do become so good and maintain that level through time?  How are great communicators able to communicate so effectively?  What are the decision and motivation strategies necessary for effective leadership, management, relationships, and parenting?  What makes it possible for natural athletes and other super performers to achieve such a high level of excellence?

If you’ve ever wondered about these questions, and would like to have the skills that make excellence possible, then this training is for you.

The Mindful Item You Need To Pack On Your Holiday Travels

Photo: Stocksy by Kait Fowlie

Mark Twain filled some 50 journals before he died, many of which were travel logs. He used his notebooks to record observations of people he met, musings on cultural influence and identity, and write down ideas for books, recording his ideas in the moment as he traveled. His entries in these travel notebooks consisted of the pithy, clever sentences he's now famous for. It's these fleeting thoughts we have during travel—observations, glittering moments of synchronicity, huge feelings of expansion—that make our vacation time truly meaningful. There's a reason we have such distinct experiences during travel. Immersion in a new culture, even a new environment, can open up the mind and increase cognitive flexibility—the stuff creativity is often made of. Keeping a travel journal allows you to record those valuable thoughts and feelings and make sure they stay with you after you return home. It's one of the best ways to help create, enhance, and preserve the magic of travel in your life. Here's how to use one effectively to maximize the value of your next trip, even if it's just a visit home for the holidays.

Before your trip: 1. Prepare yourself. Consider the kind of journal you'll need. Ideally, it will be super easy to write or jot notes in on the go. Also consider how, aside from writing, you will be collecting memories. Does your journal need flaps, pockets, blank pages? Additional envelopes? The goal is to be able to capture the moment as easily as you can. How do you anticipate you might want to do that on this particular trip? Bring a journal that supports that.

2. Set your intentions. Aside from the physical tools needed, what do you need to prepare ahead of time in order to make sure your travel journal practice is effective? Decide on what specific goals you have for your personal growth or expansion on this trip and how your travel journal can serve as a catalyst to achieving those goals. Some questions you may want to ask yourself as a starting point include, How do I want to feel during this trip? How do I want to feel when I return? What in my life will this trip change? Write the answers in your journal. Like a road map, these will help provide direction for your musings.

Make your words part of your visual memories, and keep them where you see them regularly. During your trip: 1. Don't ditch your daily mindfulness practice en route. Our ability to spot and experience magic in the present moment is only as good as our ability to live in the moment. Mindfulness is a muscle. The more we practice it, the easier it comes day by day. Don't ditch your 10-minute morning meditation because there are croissants outside your balcony. If making a point to meditate usually clears your mind and staves off thoughts of work, pets at home, etc., it is worth doing.

2. Adopt an attitude of non-judgment. Remaining fully present and aware can't happen if we're caught up in judgment. Keep your expectations in check. Let each day just wash over you. Write as if you are experiencing things for the first time. Let your inner child see the world through your eyes and record as him or her. Exist purely as your senses. Write about food from the perspective of your mouth. Write about air from the perspective of your nose. Be fully in tune with each of your senses such that you let them "own" the pen as you write.

After your trip: Reflect. Upon your return, incorporate direct quotes from your journal into your scrapbook or superimpose them onto pictures and print them. Make your words part of your visual memories and keep them where you see them regularly. If you like, you can also edit, print, and bind your journal to share with your travel companions. They'll love seeing the trip from your perspective. You can also share your firsthand experience with others and keep the magic of your trip alive by publishing a blog. The possibilities really are endless.

5 Ways Laughter Benefits Your Health “Laughter is the best medicine” may sound a bit cliché, but there is quite a bit of truth underlying this old saying. In fact, research, including our own here at Murad, has unveiled that laughter actually is a powerful “prescription” that helps both mental and physical health. Here are a few great reasons why you should allow yourself to indulge in a full-blown belly laugh:  Laughter can be relaxing. After a hearty belly laugh, some people can be heard sighing as they come down from the convulsions of laughter. The relaxation that follows a good laugh can lower blood pressure and reduce stress.  Laugher reduces stress hormones. That overload of mental tension really melts away from the forefront of your consciousness when you just laughed so hard you cried. Laughter can be a great mood regulator in a stressful situation. Make the most of opportunities to change a dark or fraught emotional tone with some laughter.

 Laughter increases blood flow. Increased blood flow is good for the heart, blood vessels and the cardiovascular system overall. Laughter is a mini workout and we should take advantage of that fun way to experience some light exercise.  Laughter boosts endorphins. Laughing gets our endorphins flowing. These natural feelgood chemicals give our brains a boost and help to give us a more positive outlook on the day.  Laughter as a coping skill. “Frantic.” “Out of control.” “Overwhelming.” These words are sometimes used to describe our feelings about trying to cope with life, work, kids, marriage and the myriad responsibilities on our plates. We cannot always predict the stresses of life but our reactions to them can dictate how much negative impact they can have on our day. Sometimes, the healthiest option in the face of stress overload is to stop and laugh.

In short, laughter can help you change your perspective — and change your life for the better. Article by Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD, a world renowned skincare expert and founder of the Inclusive Health movement.

Everyone wants beautiful hair, whether a man or woman; however, hair loss is common in both genders, which causes the hair to become thin and look unattractive. Learning how to thicken hair naturally and finding the right hair thickener could make a huge difference for you.

By week 22, a developing fetus has formed all of its hair follicles, which comes to about 5 million on the body! There are a total of 1 million on the head, with 100,000 of those follicles on the scalp. Since we do not generate new hair follicles anytime during the course of our lives, this is the largest number of hair follicles a human will ever have. Most people will notice that the density of scalp hair is reduced as they grow from childhood to adulthood. This happens because our scalps literally expand as we grow. Now, let’s understand some of the factors that can contribute to thinning hair: • Physical stress • Emotional stress • Hormonal imbalances • Thyroid condition • Toxic exposure • Deficiencies in important vitamins and minerals • Allergies • Use of some products found on the market • Heredity What happens when our hair is thinning? More than likely, the hair is falling out, aka hair loss. Usually, another hair starts to grow from the same follicle, but hair growth can decrease if DHT (a male androgen hormone that causes follicles to shrink) is high. For men, male pattern baldness follows that of a receding hairline. For women, baldness is characterized by thinning on the top or the center of the head. This is also known as androgenetic alopecia. However, there are some hair loss remedies you can use to thicken your hair naturally and. Not only will it help you gain some voluminous locks and stop hair loss, it will save you a lot of money! You can start some of these things right away, such as: •Lifestyle changes to reduce stress •Dietary improvements •Regularly using certain hair thickener natural remedies, such as essential oils

There are three essential oils that can help thicken the hair: • • •

Rosemary is one of the best oils for enhancing hair growth, which thickens the hair. Rosemary oil is believed to increase cellular metabolism that stimulates hair growth. Cedarwood essential oil can help stimulate the hair follicles by increasing circulation to the scalp. This can contribute to hair growth and slow hair loss! Cedarwood can help treat thinning hair and various types of alopecia, too. Clary sage essential oil can help balance scalp oils. Sage has some similar properties as rosemary essential oil due its ability to increase cellular metabolism. As well, it mimics some benefits found in clary sage, which provides hormone balancing properties.

Here is a great hair thickener recipe, which combines the power of these three essential oils, to try!

Rosemary, Cedarwood & Sage Hair Thickener Total Time: 5 minutes Serves: 8–10 applications Ingredients: • 45 ml jojoba oil • 45 ml grapeseed oil • 30 drops pure cedarwood essential oil • 30 drops pure rosemary essential oil • 30 drops pure sage essential oil Directions: 1. Place base of jojoba and grapeseed oils into jar. Add the drops of cedarwood, rosemary and sage. 2. Blend well by placing the lid securely on the jar and shaking vigorously. 3. Apply generously and massage into scalp and hair, wet or dry, once a day or 3 times a week. 4. Leave in hair for at least 20 minutes (longer if you can); or apply before bed and leave in overnight. You may want to use a towel or shower cap to prevent staining your bed linens. Shampoo, rinse and style as usual.

By Linda Navon This past Friday afternoon I was sitting in the Spur at the Broadacres Shopping Centre, watching my granddaughter playing and working away on the cover of this latest edition of Conscious Life magazine. I had a dilemma, we were not able to catch up with the lovely lady who was going to be on the cover – everyone is on deadline at this time of year, so I was playing around with generic pictures of beautiful unknown women for the cover. From behind me I hear this… “Excuse me, but what are you doing?” I turned around and answered her, asked her who she is and immediately asked her if she would beautify our magazine. …And here we are, with the lovely Rebekah van Rooyen/Krossynski gracing our cover. Oh joy! Rebekah is super gorgeous with an easy confident manner and very approachable. She had her little son, Tristan, with her, who is equally friendly and endearing. So while the kids played on the jumping castle, had faces painted and stuck tattoos on themselves, we chatted and she educated me (the unenlightened) on the topic of being a Mrs South Africa.

What motivated you to enter the 2016 Mrs. South Africa competition – besides the fact that you are gorgeous? “Blush” Thank you. I am very humbled by that comment. I think it was something I had to do to remember who I was before marriage and baby, as a women we can get very lost in the wife and mom roll. Through this experience, it helped me become the better version of myself. It brought me back to me, It gave more time for to myself, I allowed myself to be a bit selfish again and do things for me and only me. Since the Mrs SA experience, I have found my passion again for modeling, radio and events. It just reignited my passions, and realize, that it doesn’t matter your age, or that you are a mom, your dreams are still very important and you should still accomplish your life goals. Your circumstances may change but you don’t need to change. Focus on yourself no matter what, strive for the best. If anything it will make you a better wife and mom. I feel very blessed this year. I truly am happy I have found my purpose again. Was there any conflict between all the women who entered, like spitefulness etc? Funny enough we actually formed such a sisterhood. There were certain women that were spiteful and the jealousy would show, but the majority was actually very pleasant. I have actually made some good friends. I think because most of the women who entered are accomplished, wives, mothers, business women, and have already have achieved so much in life, so no matter the outcome, life is beautiful and we are already blessed. We had the attitude that; girls compete with each other, women empower one another. Would you enter again? I got what I need from the whole experience, and am grateful, but I never go back in life, I am someone who always looks forward and upwards. What is your approach to living an eco or earth friendly lifestyle? Do you check that the products you use are not tested on animals; do you recycle your trash, buy organic etc? I absolutely look at if products are tested on animals. This makes me so angry and I would hate to be associated with such brands. I try to recycle as much as possible, and buy organic products where I can, I still feel South Africa needs more organic shops and more education on the matter. I actually used to have a beauty salon, where I only used organic products. This is very important to me. My hope is that more South Africans opt for eco living.

REGARDING TRISTAN How long will you wait before you have another child, if at all? I know it sounds selfish, but at the moment with all that’s happening in my life and all the new projects, I don’t see this happening in the next two years, if it happens though, then it does, and of course I would be over the moon, as children are really such blessings. Not planning on having another child anytime soon. I would also be very open to adopting a child maybe in the future. I would love nothing more than to give a baby a loving home and a second chance in life. But that’s future plans, nothing in the near the future though planned. My beautiful boy, is the love of my life, he just fills my heart daily. I am very content. What is the most important quality you are teaching or instilling in Tristan that will stay with him all his life? Manners, respect, being a gentleman, but most of all, he must always know that he needs to follow his dreams, and that no matter what I will stand behind him and help build him up. He must not change for anyone, he needs to always stay true to himself, don’t allow society to change him. He must always know, how much I love him and that he gave me life…….. Having met Tristan, he is a lively and endearing child… is this because his Mummy is so outgoing and approachable? I would think so, our children are constantly watching us and learning from us, and all good traits are from me.. hahahaha……had to say that…… He is also very soft and gentle, but even dad says, his like his mom…… so ill take that…. How would you deal with your child being bullied, or if he became a bully? To be honest, I've seen it before at his school, I know, they are so young but yet have to deal with bullying, what irritates me even more, is when teachers turn a blind eye. It’s so hard to comment, because it made me very sensitive, the best, was just making sure that he was separated from this particular boy. I know I can’t do that forever, especially now that he is approaching Grade 000. I pray all the time he never goes through bullying, it’s a hard one. Especially that it affects so many kids these days. I think I would be the mom that opts for home schooling, because honestly it wouldn’t be worth it. Kids have to go through enough these days, I would never allow him to have to be bullied, by keeping him in school.

What did you do the first time he said the ‘F’ word? (…or what will you do?) hahahaha….thank goodness he has never said it. I think he knows he shouldn’t say it some how..I mean lets be honest we have all said it some time in front of our kids, whether we like to admit it or not…so thank goodness on that one. But I think I have heard the s@#t word? Hahaha… the best thing to do is ignore them, not make a big deal about so hopefully they forget that word..and then NEVER SAY IT AGAIN………

Would you say that your and your husband’s parenting styles are in sync and progressive? Some what… I feel if they are not it would just be a disaster, so thank goodness we really want the same for our child. It makes bringing up kids a little easier…so far.. so good…..

REBEKAH AS A CHILD As a child, what was your “when I grow up” aspiration? What were your ambitions as a child, and if you could start all over, would you still choose the same path you have taken? Since a child, I wanted to be an actor, a model, something that was to do with drama and cameras. I also always wanted to have a business, I was never someone who could see myself working for a boss. I cant say I would do anything different cause I wouldn’t have what I have now, and have this beautiful boy of mine. So I am where I'm supposed to be….. What would you say the most important quality is that your parents taught you that still serve you today? Family is everything. My dad has also been such a great role model for me, on how women should be treated. They taught us that we are capable of accomplishing everything and anything our hearts desire. My mom has taught me how to love my child, she is the most selfless person I know. I am very blessed, and couldn’t be more thankful from how they have brought me up and have instilled such great qualities in me which have prepared me for life. Forever grateful. Were you an ‘A’ student at school or was there a rebellious side? Hmmmm…….how many people see this mag? Hahaha…I think I was a good student. My sister was more the A type student, I was more the girl, who wondered why we paid school to be there, and why they were not paying us? Think it was the entrepreneur in me……

What was the most mischievous/naughtiest thing you ever did growing up? When my girlfriends and I, lied about going to a rave. We were about 14, and in those days, raves were huge. We found a pamphlet, and there was a rave called Mother returns, well of course we had to go check this out. We all lied to our parents, I told them I was sleeping at X, X says she's sleeping at Y, Y says she's sleeping at Z, the only problem is I had a letter with all our plans for the night, and left it on my bed the night we left…well, we were busted to say the least……. Looking back it was very naughty….and very irresponsible…..

Were you popular at school? I had my “group” I have never like having a big group of friends. I like having friends I can count on one hand, that way, secrets stay secrets, and I feel the love…needless to say I still have the same friends as school……..I was popular with the boys though….hahahaha…… Do you have many friends that you have kept in touch with since being a child? Exactly the same friends as school. We have all changed and grown in so many ways, but we have managed to keep in touch. I have made some wonderful friends after school, but my school friends are like my sisters. Always will be.

REBEKAH NOW How do you fit in a career and having a family? What does a typical day/week in the life of Rebekah look like? Its definitely a bit of juggling and working late nights. My day consists of breaking up each and everything I do. A typical day in the life of Rebekah is being woken up by my 3 year old, my natural alarm clock, and the cutest alarm clock in the world, with the best morning kisses. Then breakfast and off to school we go, straight to the office to work on events, then after lunch straight to radio, where I co-host on the afternoon drive at Mix FM. From 3pm-6pm. I get home around 6:45 then its bathing my child, reading a book, putting him to bed, finishing off my work and off to bed. Some morning you will find me working out at Switch Playground. You will also find me squeezing in meetings to discuss our NPO. How did you get involved with ‘Confidence in Kids’ and what is your input for the cause? This is a crazy story, I happened to be introduced to a man called Sammy Dollar Sehoene, he is an author of a book called Dialogue between DreamMakers, I was introduced to Sammy by a wonderful woman by the name of Rita, she is the owner of the Imbizo Shisanyama, which happens to be in Tembisa. They were also my support and gold sponsor during the Mrs SA competition, well, she thought we were very similar, we finally met on a freezing winter morning, during a soup kitchen morning, and from that day on decided we need to set up something together. We felt the need to come together and help the kids of South Africa, we wanted to install confidence and motivate children to stay in school, we wanted to teach them entrepreneurial skills, and how to build a business. So Confidence in Kids is all about confidence, motivation, and entrepreneurial skills. There are 3 members at the moment, and one sponsor, we are always though looking for more sponsors and donations towards our schools. We are also about to launch a board game, which we are very excited about.

How are you using your experience as a finalist for ‘Mrs. South Africa’ to inspire others? Through my NPO- Confidence in Kids. We are teaching confidence, motivation for staying in school, and entrepreneurial skills. Little girls really look up to me, so it feels my duty to only teach them how to become the better version of themselves. You are very confident, is this natural or did you have to work on it? I think I have naturally always been a confident person, who loves to talk, who is very passionate and just loves life. But being a model and actress from such a young age and travelling the world, I have had to be more brave and out there, so this may have helped build confidence as well… Do you get nervous before going on air or is this just another natural talent of yours? I would be lying if I said I was not nervous at first. There a lot of listeners and everyone is judging, I am now very used to it and love my job. The most important thing to me is just being myself, you cant please everybody, but I am who I am…. Where do you see you career in 5 or 10 years’ time? Retired…hmmmm…..and maybe living on a beautiful island called Mauritius. You can visit anytime…….?!? What is the most expensive item you have ever bought for yourself? A car!!! What are your guilty pleasures? How do you relax, do you have any special treats for yourself? Like pigging out on chocolate or spending the day in a spa, or catching up on TV series? Watching reality TV, I am a little addicted. And of course a day at a spa…guilty as charged…… What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Do you have any hobbies? I used to..but these days with no extra time, spending the hours with my son has to be the best time…. I try to take full advantage of free time, and really just do fun things with him and just hang out together. But I used to enjoy doing art, cooking and running….. Name 4 items on your bucket list? Take Tristan to Disney Land, I have been and can’t wait to take him. Go to Hollywood. Buy a house in Mauritius. Visit an ashram in India. Learn French. What are you currently reading and what are your 4 favourite books? I haven’t had much time for books this year, but I mostly read motivating books. Any books by Robin Sharma will do. absolutely love that man.

What music do you prefer and who are your favourite SA Bands? I like music that means something to me and I can relate to the song. Fills my soul. I love the rolling stones. My favourite SA band however are Parlotones. But I must say that I absolutely solute Goldfish as well.

Do you have a role model in your life, who and why? Mom and Dad, so many reasons…I wouldn’t know where to start…. Who is the most famous person you have ever met and under what circumstances? Angelina Jolie. I was actually asked to act as her photo double on a Hollywood film called Beyond Borders. If you look closely, you will see each scene, where Angelina Jolie is not speaking, it’s actually me…

I just want to add that I am currently a co-host on Mix FM on the afternoon drive and am the Executive Head of Black Snow Events and Projects. Thank you Rebekah, you are a bright shining star and I am sure you will inspire many women with your Mrs South Africa experience. You also have a heart of gold and we wish you much success in all you future projects.

The next Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs South Africa could be you!

On taking the chance and entering Mrs South Africa, I knew I would meet like minded, powerful, empowering, gorgeous women. But one woman that stood out for me was Unaiza Moideen, from The Brow Bar and My Skin Centre. Having studied beauty therapy and venturing into becoming a beauty therapist and owning a salon in the retail space I was blown away by this concept of both stores, and the passion and professionalism of Unaiza and the whole team. Being a model, TV presenter and actor from a young age, I always had the need and pressure to have perfect, healthy, glowing skin, so it came naturally to me to look after it, having My Skin Centre near by with everything they have to offer gave me a feeling, that I could take all the information I’ve learnt along the way and now enhance my knowledge and keep up to date with the ongoing trends. Ageing gracefully, and as they say prevention is better than cure. Thanks to the out of the box concept of The Brow Bar, where I was pleasantly surprised, no appointment needed, and I finally found someone in Johannesburg that specializes in threading. All the therapists are brilliantly trained and friendly. Brows not only frame your face but also give you, your true identity.

Thank you again for being an official Mrs South Africa sponsor! See you soon

Toxins fall under several categories and all form free radicals in the body, damage red blood cells and damage the DNA, reduce immunity and cause AGING. Toxins upset the proton and electron balance of the body causing the body to become acidic and result in free radical damage the body. This is observed when examining Live Blood under the microscope and Quantum Resonance Magnetic Assessments of immunity levels and bone marrow. They cause both these physical problems and distortions in the auric field, chakras and meridians and in the resonance frequency of the body as can be detected by SCIO analysis.

Month 2 Feedback Linda and Clint are “well, pun intended, on their way on the 3 Month Rejuvenation Programme including following their unique Nutritional and Detoxification Plan. This month we are happy to say that Linda is doing very well, much improvement all round and is feeling energized and focused.

There are several categories of toxins such as: Oils Fat and oil exposed to heat, light and air will convert to the trans-fat form which is carcinogenic and indigestible as the natural enzymes are destroyed and therefore not digested and are deposited in the body. Animal fats such as heated butter, cream cheese and mild contain long chain fats and are very unstable when exposed to heat, light and air forming free radicals easily. The best form of readily absorbable oil is short chain, cold-pressed coconut oil and medium chain, cold-pressed flaxseed oil. Fat can be dissolved using Heavenly Harmony Weight and Fat Loss containing several ingredients to cut fat and by consuming good fat as thus removes bad fat due to its anti-oxidant activity and the natural enzymes required for digestion.

Reishi medicinal mushrooms

Sugars and carbohydrates Heated, refined, short-chain sugars (glucose, fructose, mannose) form acrylamide a plastic cancer forming substance. Alcohol is a by-product of fermentation which denatures food molecules in the gastrointestinal tract releasing toxins. Apart from the high sugar content of fizzy drinks and sodas they contain phosphoric acid which is highly acidic. Sugar slows down white blood cell activity for half an hour and robs the body of Vitamin B (anti-stress) especially. Wheat and other starches, apart from being modified and hybridised, are broken down into sugars and contain gluten (protein) to which most people are allergic. Corn starch is highly refined and modified genetically which form toxic genetically modified micro-organisms (GMO) which reside in our bodies causing toxins. The best form of raw polysaccharides or long chain sugars for brain functioning are found in Heavenly Harmony’s Algae Mix (BlueGreen Algae, Chlorella, Spirulina), Medicinal Mushroom Mix (Reishi, Shiitake, Chaga, Lion’s mane, Maitake, Cordyceps), Bee Mix (Bee pollen, Propolis and Royal jelly) and Stress Defence Shield

Blue-Green algae

Bee pollen

Proteins Heated and processed proteins agglutinate and become bound and unavailable to the body for use. Tablespoon for tablespoon spirulina or bee pollen contain more protein that meat, once cooked 30% or less of the meat protein only is available to the body which makes the tablespoon of protein in Spirulina or bee pollen even higher in comparison. The raw protein in Heavenly Harmony Algae Mix (BlueGreen Algae, Chlorella, Spirulina), Medicinal Mushroom Mix (Reishi, Shiitake, Chaga, Lion’s mane, Maitake, Cordyceps), Bee Mix (Bee pollen, Propolis and Royal jelly) is bio-available with naturally occurring enzymes for digestion and without the antibiotics and growth hormones in meat. It also contains long-chain polysaccharide sugars for brain functioning, natural essential oils, minerals and vitamins.

Schizandra berry

Stimulants Caffeine is a stimulant and diuretic, Nicotine is a stimulant and vasodilator and sugar are what Parasites and pathogenic microorganisms thrive on and crave them causing the human host to find these foods at all costs; hence we become addicted to them.

Pathogens, Parasites and Vaccinations Pathogens such as Bacteria, Fungal, Viral, Moulds, Flukes and Worms and Parasites such as Cell Wall Deficient (CWD) bacteria such as Lyme’s Disease, Morgellons, Rickettsia, Spirochetes, AIDS, Ebola and Prions reside in the body if the pH is acidic, the immunity is low, the body is undernourished and full of toxins. One of the ways to identify vaccination residues is by using the SCIO are and by using Heavenly Harmony’s Ormus Gold Milk, Lyme’s Gold for parasites and cell wall deficient bacteria, Parastop for worms and flukes and Microbiome Reset

Parasites

Heavy metal Minerals and chemicals Heavy metals, insecticides, pesticides and chemical fertilisers can be removed using Heavenly Harmony’s De-Tox 100 for heavy metals and chemicals, Iodine, Chlorella, Andrographis and Microbiome Reset.

Hormones Plastics which mimic oestrogens called xeno-oestrogens and distort the oestrogen-progesterone readings by inflating the oestrogen levels. Daily intake of Heavenly Harmony’s Gold Flaxseed oil will prevent the attachment of xeno-oestrogens to body cells. Other stress hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol damage the adrenal and thyroid glands. Continued stress can reduce dopamine. Hormones can be balanced using Heavenly Harmony’s hormone range of Chasteberry (progesterone), Black Cohosh (oestrogen), Tribulis Terrestris (testosterone), Magnolia bark or Ginseng (cortisol), Saw Palmetto (prostate) and Stress Defence Shield (Adrenals, Thyroid)

EMR and Perverse Energy Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) from cell phones, cell masts, Wi-Fi, X-rays, Microwave ovens damages the nucleus of every cell and the DNA.

Body, cosmetic, beauty salon and cleaning products These all contain organic solvents and chemicals such as bleach, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, lead, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Parabens, Fragrances and Polyethylene Glycol

Medicines, Vaccines and Recreational Drugs Drugs such as medicines (iatrogenic toxicity) and residues from vaccines and recreational drugs which lodge into the tissues and circulate in the blood causing physical and psychological dependency can be seen in Live Blood Analysis and are identified by the SCIO.

Stress, Neurological and Mental retained toxins Neurological and chemical toxins such as adrenalin and cortisol in response to fear such as retained mental toxins causing chemical imbalances. Stress is a major cause of all illnesses and daily practice of meditation and relaxation techniques will assist in reducing stress.

Emotional toxins These are often stored and relate to anger, fear, sadness, jealousy, greed which have a toxic effect on the body by releasing chemicals which cause the body to be acidic and reduce immunity.

Some suggestions by Jane Mackenzie’s for detoxification:  Eliminating the toxins from the food by eating organic and home farmed food. Wash food well.  Choose the best water you can get such as spring water, or water from activator systems, water filters and gravity filters. Tap water can be enlivened by pouring water from one glass into another creating a vortex for 5-10 mins.  Cleaning the air by using plants, air filters, ozone and anionic machines  Fasting and following a detox programme  Far Infra-Red Saunas (14 micron) work in three ways by heating up the body and penetrating the body by 4 cm, liquefy fat cells thereby releasing toxins and killing the parasites  Ozone, or O3, which enters the blood stream via the skin and works as an enormous anti-oxidant cleaning up all the free-radicals  Acupuncture is a non-verbal way of releasing toxins, emotions and re-arranges neurological pathways  SCIO for diagnosis and elimination of parasites, pathogens, heavy metals, insecticides, vaccinations  Exercise where you sweat  Breathing out, or exhaling, the toxins  Body brushing to keep the skin pores open to eliminate toxins  Liver, kidney and blood cleansing  Body work such as lymph and detox massages or reflexology.  Switching off cell phones and Wi-Fi at night and when not in use.  Eating certain foods such as coriander, cilantro, chlorella, iodine or Schizandra berry daily to shield the body from EMR  Eating medium chain fatty acids such as olive oil or Flaxseed oil and broccoli to work as aromatase inhibitors and prevent the binding of xeno-oestrogen chemicals to cells in the body  Probiotics such as Microbiome reset with live enzymes  Coconut oil can be used in many ways: applied to the skin to increase immunity, 1-3 Tbsp. eaten a day and by a process called “pulling” where 1tsp to 1 Tbsp. of coconut is held in the mouth for 1520 minutes and then spat out.  Epsom salt and volcanic rock baths  Ingesting food grade volcanic rock dust adsorbs toxins and protects from radiation

Many people have been experiencing an energetic burst of energy and are unsure of what it is attributed to. It could be from solar flares and coronal mass ejections or it might be the energy being sent from the galactic center of our galaxy. As we look at the world today, it is tempting to think of it as dark and falling apart. We are, however, in a transition process. Humanity is moving into higher consciousness, and we now have more positive energy on the planet than we have negative. For centuries, we functioned from an old, negative consciousness of war, violence, cruelty, and the need for power. This is now changing. The change may seem slow; but, humanity is shifting toward peace, cooperation, and compassion. It may not seem this way at this time, but the increased negativity we see is the dark consciousness putting up its last fight for survival. Dark energy will resist change, even if that change is for the better. We are creatures of habit and we tend to like the way things are; or, we often wish to go back to the way things were. We enjoy the familiar, even if the familiar is negative.

Human consciousness is now shining more light upon the planet. Because of this, we are becoming a positive world. This increased light does have its temporary problems. It will bring out the suppressed darkness that was within humans for a long time. If a light is shined into an abandoned warehouse, rats and other pests scatter and run around. The pests were always there; they were merely hiding in the dark. As more light shines from human consciousness the world becomes more transparent; the deviousness of people becomes known. The new consciousness will not tolerate shady ways of thinking anymore.

We see examples of this in various forms of protests, social and environmental movements, and/or the exposure of corruption in political systems and corporations. The world is now giving a clear message that it wants change for the better. The new consciousness is different and unlike anything we have had in our history.

For example, the new humanity wants desperately to stop the wars and violence, but the old consciousness still believes it is the only solution. The mindset of the old consciousness is to overpower, conquer, and seek revenge. The new consciousness calls for peace, compassion, dignity, and respect. The old consciousness was division thinking (us-versus-them mentality), and the new consciousness is a unified approach: “We are all one, and we must work with and help one another.” When it comes to the new energy, many of us may have already felt this shift in thinking. If so, it is because we are ready for the new energy. Consciousness has been evolving for many lifetimes. If you feel within that you are a spiritual worker (an “old soul”), then this is an important time. You have been working on this shift for humanity for many lifetimes as an integral part of this healing process for planet Earth! All intentions, meditations, prayers, activities and self-insight have all come together to change human consciousness. Overcoming personal struggles reflects that healing to the rest of humanity as well. In feeling peaceful, those “peaceful vibrations” are sent to the minds of others, whether you are aware of this or not. True change and healing occurs at the energetic level of creation. As individual minds heal, the world heals. Mind is causation and the physical world is effect. Therefore, the ills of the world must be solved at the source; which is thinking, energy and consciousness. In this new energy, we are now ready for big work-and that is to truly feel our spiritual mastery. In order to speed up the process of peace and harmony, we must, as individuals, create peace and harmony within our own hearts FIRST. In the old consciousness, this was not always easy to do, up against the dark at every turn. The good news is that, in the new consciousness, various problems of the world will be resolved easier and quicker than before. In technology for example, we have seen more technological advances in the last 20 years than we have seen in the last two thousand years. Just as leaps and bounds were made in technologies, imagine the same leaps and bounds occurring in your spiritual awakening. We can do far more in much less time. Shine and continue to shine your energetic light. Fear not what is shown on the news. It is only a transition process. All that occurs is happening in the appropriateness of our human evolution.

To brighten your light, drop any drama and negativity by resisting any tendencies to try and fix, fight, or make your past different. The past is old energy. Let it be and set it free. There is nothing in negativity that you need. Walk away from it with courage and confidence.

Remember that spiritual light is your primary focus. This will heal and increase the positive energy within yourself and the planet as well. Hold thoughts of peace and compassion (especially compassion for yourself) as often as possible in any ways that you can. You cannot help anyone in darkness if you are sinking in darkness yourself. It takes strength to help the weak. It takes health and wellness to heal the sick. Only light, compassion, and power can help those in the dark. Be that which you came here to be. Compassion for self is our self-worth. As we increase our self-worth all things change for the better. Our world is not suffering because we do not have enough resources. We suffer when a majority of people do not have love and self-worth. The degradation of society is due to greed, lack of integrity, and the hunger for power-all done in an unconscious attempt to fill the void in the human psyche. This void is sourced in low selfworth or negative consciousness. If people in general felt more secure and loving within themselves, thoughts of hate, jealousy, cruelty, power trips, or violence would not be found in their hearts and mind at all. The world would then know harmony. Become the peace, become the love, become the joy, and become the kindness you wish to see in the world. Expand these qualities within yourself FIRST, and allow the work of your old soul to enhance our present power. Spiritual workers now have new and greater energy to support their efforts. This is the strength and foundation that lies waiting through your many lifetimes. Each person’s energy and consciousness is far reaching. Do not let it go to waste on negativity. It is time for us all to exercise our spiritual mastery and help carry our planet Earth to its next level of evolution: a planet of love, goodness, and benevolence.

The Inspiration of Gold The colour gold tends to catch the eye as it can give one a sense of being rich and adventurous. It is cousin to the colour yellow and brown and is associated with enthusiasm, courage, contentment, and wisdom. It is also a precious metal that is associated with wealth, grandeur and prosperity, as well as sparkle, glitz and glamour. It is the ultimate in illuminated colour and enhances many things around it. It is linked to masculine energy and the power of the sun. Gold inspires knowledge, spirituality, understanding and enlightenment. It can, however, lead one to ego conflicts and feelings of futility. Positive aspects: It can be used to balance energy fields and it can provide composure and stability to the emotional system. Negative aspects: Being encompassed by an excess of gold can lead to pretentiousness and self-importance. How focused are you on your quest for prominent power and impact? Remember, there are other areas in life that need just as much attention.

DECORATING WITH GOLD Many people don’t like to use the colour gold for decorating the interior of their homes as they think it’s too pretentious but sometimes it can be a good thing to let the sun shine in by designing, for example, an upbeat bedroom with gold accents that lifts spirits from dawn past dusk. Use shades of gold to off-set white or cream curtains or wooden painted decorative pieces. If you are want to make an impact, consider wallpapering the wall behind the headboard to fashion a much-needed focal point. Since gold naturally casts a warm glow, think of golden silk pillows on your bed or couch. Metallic gold accessories and gold-threaded fabrics introduce a sense of luxury and affluence to the room. Cheerful, welcoming and very popular, the colour gold is used often in feng shui to attract abundance.

HEALING WITH GOLD

WEARING GOLD Wearing gold in everyday life increases personal power and promotes courage, confidence and willpower. It also creates a mood of success, elegance and opulence. Nothing is more striking than a gold evening dress, and for daytime find a beautiful gold coloured scarf or tie and notice how that makes you feel. Did you know that wearing Gold jewellery has a masculine/Yang association whereas Silver is linked to the feminine principle? What are you more attracted too, or what do you require more of in your life? The strength and directness of the male, the gentle fluidity of the female, or a combination of both where the yin and yang elements are in harmony?

Gold oils of Transformation  Addictions  Accepting and enjoying life as it is. Live in the present  Let go of disappointments and emotions  Need to release anger  Find the sweetness in life  Try not to obsess about it  Stop putting things off – do it NOW  Love yourself and release scars of life

Using the Gold Oil of Transformation would be highly supportive if you would like to invite the energetic support in a more tangible way. All the oils address the emotional issues we have not dealt with, and when easing those, it positively affects the physical body as well. So… if you tend to procrastinate and put things off till another time, then this oil is perfect for you. It teaches you that you have so much to offer and uncovers the jewels within, so you can truly shine. It helps you to understand and address phobias, and invites you to get in touch with your own deep knowing. It benefits the nervous system by improving the ability to transmit information. It helps the digestion system, the bladder and can support hormonal and chemical imbalances. Rub it around your hip area twice a day, or add to your bath and soak, enjoying the nourishment it brings to your entire body (awesome for the winter dry skin). I use it instead of a night cream and my skin loves it.

MAKE ANGELS PART OF YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE!

By Margi McAlpine

! As the end of another year approaches most of us are still trying to catch our breath as we wonder at the rate this year has passed! Every year seems to fly past with more speed than the last one making us realise how fast time is passing and how little time we have to achieve what our actual Soul purpose in this life time is! As we look back and assess the past months for many of us they will have been filled with daunting challenges and issues that we probably never anticipated and would really rather not have had to deal with. For many there would have been ups and downs and perhaps you often felt like you were sitting on a roller coaster and hanging on for dear life as it took you to extremes of joy and fear! Often challenges are also gifts that you are given as the lessons and growth that occurs with having to deal with issues is enormous and allows you to grow and do your own selfdevelopment. This would not have happened if you had not gone through the difficult times. It is therefore appropriate that you give thanks for the hard times and lessons as well. It also indicates a level of understanding and trust that you know you will always be looked after no matter how difficult times are. Gratitude occurs when you are able to appreciate and give thanks for everything that you have been given so abundantly in your life whether they are positive or negative.

Life is often so busy and hectic that you miss many of the gifts that the Universe bestows on you. It is very easy to just not see or acknowledge what you have received because you are so busy or hectically trying to cope with what is happening in your world. You need to give thanks for everything no matter how small or large. Often the small things are overlooked as many wait for things that are of huge significance before they even think about giving thanks. The more you are able to be grateful the more you open yourself up to abundance and blessings in your life which are also known as grace. Be generous in sharing your blessings and grace with others. When your hands are open to give they are open to receive. Show gratitude and thanks for everything and everyone in your life which will allow you to live in a state of grace which allows you to be showered with blessings by the Universe in a never ending cycle of abundance. Now before we start a new cycle and hopefully a new beginning with the start of a New Year it is time to look back and show gratitude not only for all the wonderful blessings we have received but also for all the amazing lessons we learnt with the challenges we faced. I look back with gratitude and wonder at the abundance and the lessons that have occurred during the past twelve months and feel so blessed, honoured and loved!

I was so blessed to once again be able to travel around our beautiful country facilitating workshops and meeting and working with the most amazing beings. I am always humbled by the privilege of being able to work with so many of you. Thank you! I would like to thank my helpers who so willingly assist at my workshops. You always help with big smiles and open hearts! Without you I cannot do the work I do. To the enthusiastic and motivated teachers of the Angel Connection School I say thank you. It is always a pleasure and an honour to work with you and I look forward to our next phase of work together.

This is such a great way to start the New Year! I am delighted that I will be back in Johannesburg on 4th and 5th February 2017 at Shanti Sanctuary in Bedfordview facilitating the workshop “BELIEVE IN YOURSELF”. So many go through life thinking that they are not good enough or being conditioned by others to believe that they do not have any self-worth. This has a negative impact on every area of their lives and never allows them to actually reach their full potential which is so sad! At this workshop I will help you to deal with these issues with understanding and unconditional love. I will share my vast experience with you and give you the tools to change yourself and your life and assist you to resolve this. This workshop will enable you to understand who you are and how amazing and special you truly are! I will also facilitate a powerful visualisation bringing in Archangel Michael which will assist you to lift your vibration and remove any blockages that are holding you back. Because of the smaller venue there will be two sessions – either on Saturday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm or on Sunday morning from 10am to 1pm. I have already received numerous bookings so please contact me soon if you would like to join us! Not to be missed!

I will be facilitating “BELIEVE IN YOURSELF” at Erin Hall in Cape Town on the 19th February 2017 from 10am to 1pm. I am hoping to be in Durban on 25th March 2017 but am just waiting to secure the venue. Info to go out soon! We will recommence in Knysna on Tuesday 17th January 2017. There will be a workshop from 9.30am to 11.30am and then at 11.45 am we will commence with the Mediumship Course. This course is very special and will certainly kick start and enhance your own self development. The other ongoing workshops will also continue as usual. Please contact me for details. Please contact me on margi@angelconnection.co.za or 082-563-7422 for more info.

By Guylin van den Berg The year has been long and we are all excited for the holidays that await in the not too distant future. For most of us crazy outdoor peeps, it means riding our bikes at a reasonable hour and not for 3 hours in the pitch darkness in order to get to the 8am meeting with a moaning boss. December is a great time to build the all-important base or foundation for your next year, it helps create a platform on which to build up to goal races or peak events. Base miles mean longer, slower rides to help the body build necessary endurance before adding intensity later on to tweak the engine. Base training is all about focussing on which zone you are riding in. Zones mean that your heart rate is at a percentage of your max. For example, if your heart rate is 200 max, then your base training zones, which are divided into 5 levels, will be between zone 1 and 2 and occasionally 3. Zone 1 and 2 will be 55-70% of your max, so referring to our example above, it will mean you ride between 110 beats per minute and 140 beats per minute (bpm). Staying in these zones will build on your aerobic capacity which ensures that your body will be able to ride a few hours at a steady pace. Focus on building in 2-3 week blocks. So for the first week, have a goal of let’s say 12 hours, then in week 2, we try achieve 14 hours and in week 3, 16 hours. You have to allow your body to rest too, so after the 2-3 week block, depending on what works for you, take a few days easy, allow the body to adapt.

Conscious Life Magazine

Rest allows all the body to benefit from the training done in the blocks. Another focus for December can be to increase your quality of your riding instead of the quantity. It will be better to get a proper 3 or 4 hour ride in, than try do 6 hours while stopping every 10km due to lack of fitness. Try to ride consistently with minimal stopping. Also try keep a high cadence, by this we mean 90-100 rpm. This helps your body and pedal stroke become more efficient. A great benefit is to have a coach which can assist in setting your correct zones and also guide you as to whether your plan is on track or help when you have other commitments to attend to. The idea of paying someone and having them give you feedback will also force you to stay within your zones. The biggest mistake we see is guys constantly riding in the wrong zones due to the guys they are riding with are too fast for them. We firmly believe you are doing more damage than rather focussing on training in your zones until you can progress to the point that riding with a group is still within your zones.

Leave Strava at home during base. Chasing Strava segments can be done after a firm base has been built and we are ready to move onto intensity and building for races or goals.

Enjoy your holidays and hope to see you out on the roads. For any further questions, do not hesitate to ask us at marketing@azzuricycling.com

Another tip that we have carried with us for a number of years is that during December rides, you remain seated as long as possible. So when climbing, stay seated ad only stand for short durations to relieve pressure. This technique helps with building pedal stroke strength during the base block.

If some of you are interested in learning more, visit www.usn.co.za. Otherwise we are always available at guylin@azzuricycling.com to answer all your questions. Our team is always happy to help you get the most our of cycling!!

Nutrition is also an important part during training as a whole, but particular attention needs to be made during December as with holidays it is easy to eat foods that hamper recovery and weight loss. Base is a great weight loss block as you are riding long durations in the fat burning zone 2. Focus on eating full meals with a balance of protein, veggies and carbs. For the December heat is South Africa, focus on replenishing liquids and keeping hydrated as it will affect tomorrow and the next day. We use the USN hydrator to replenish all our lost minerals during the ride but also help with a quicker recovery. This mix with ice is a killer. You will be wanting more after you get home in 30 degrees plus heat. We have organised great discount for you at www.usn.co.za and use the code “Guylin” to try some products. To finish off on our base discussion. End the ride with a light stretch. While the muscles are warm and you are still sweaty, it will help with recovery, loosening the muscles and feeling more comfortable on the bike. The longer rides tend to tighten the muscles due to a bit of overload and in return makes you uncomfortable on the bike as the muscles are shorter. A quick stretch of 20-30min will do you wonders.

Conscious Life Magazine

Happy Cycling, remember, always be safe!

About Guylin: I have been racing for 12 years, 4 years on the road before coming back to the mountain biking side. I focus on the longer ultra-marathons on the South African circuit. Our races are average of 100km and take roughly 4-5 hours. I have competed in 5 Cape Epic’s with my best finish being 26th overall. I still love riding my bike every day and finishing off with a good coffee.

The Secret To Building Exercise Habits Most People Forget There is one thing that you need to develop an exercise habit that sticks that many people inexplicably discount. Exercise is a difficult habit to pick up. It is not enough just to set aside a particular period in the day and rely on willpower to follow through. Part of the reason is that people don’t necessarily start exercising because they enjoy it. Instead, they start exercising to lose weight or look better. When the changes are minimal, or not what they had hoped for, then it is easy to give up.

Internal rewards key to exercise habit New research finds that one key to getting the exercise habit is tapping in to intrinsic rewards. Intrinsic rewards are things like the pleasure we get from the activity itself.

This could be through socialising with others, the endorphin rush, or something else. When intrinsic, internal rewards are linked up with a particular, regular slot in the day for exercising, then the habit can flourish in the long term. Finding the missing key, then, is all about identifying those highly personal intrinsic rewards. What is it about the exercise that makes you feel good? If the answer is nothing, then it is time to think about different types of exercise that do make you feel good. For example, gyms are not for everyone, some people prefer to play sports in teams, others prefer exercising alone. Some people like rigid goals and structure, others prefer a more free-form approach. Find your pleasure and the habit is much more likely to stick.

By Angelfactory

It was 2012, December, and I was standing at Frankfurt Airport in front of the departure monitors. All flights were cancelled, one after the other they flashed on the screen. I was stuck due to heavy snow on the runways, desperate to get home. While other people travel the world to find rare artifacts and precious things, I was on the hunt for the perfect bar of natural soap. Our six month old baby was suffering from extreme eczema over his entire body. We tried doctors, naturalists and home remedies but nothing worked. The only thing that brought some relief was Cortisone creams, but in the process made his skin thinner by the day. As I travelled to Western Africa a lot for work I was introduced to their natural Karite Butters and other natural products and got interested. The Karite butter also brought relief and we were now motivated to find a solution not only for our son but also for those who have been living with these type of skin conditions for years.

Our journey on this topic now stretches over four years and many miles, but our baby is now a healthy boy of five and his skin was cured of all ailments since 2013. We would love to share some of our valuable information with you as we have learned that most skin problems come from an unhappy and over worked immune system. Our goal became to make a soap that would work with instead of against the immune system in bringing about healing. Let me first introduce you to what 100% natural soap is not. There are so many claims out there today of natural products which in fact is only homemade chemical concoctions that will cause more damage than good. Look out for the following warning signs:  Natural soap will always have colours that are in the soft natural hues of nature and brightly coloured soap most likely comes from chemical colours which will only cause the immune system to flare up. Walk away as anyone who is concerned with the welfare of your skin will never use synthetic colorants.  Any scents that come from fragrant oils are a big no-no, as the body will not allow any benefit from the soap if it detects synthetic compounds so you will reap no benefits, only more problems and prolonged suffering.  Soap which is also very hard most likely also contains hardeners and other compounds which will be harsh on your skin.

So what should a real 100% natural and organic bar of soap look like? We at Angelfactory have looked at all the components that come together in a bar of soap and this is our solution to the perfect healing bar of soap.  Our base oils are all cold pressed, unrefined plant oils that is specifically chosen for the contribution they make to skin healing. They are treated with care and respect during the process of soap making and are never heated to high temperatures in order to keep all benefits intact.  The scents in our soap come from pure essential oils which smell heavenly but are chosen for the skin healing benefits rather than their scent.  Our botanicals, clays and extracts we add for colour are also based on what joy it can bring to the skin instead of visual appeal.  Our soap is never overly packaged and are rather sold fresh cut so the oils can breathe and cure naturally. We as consumers need to educate ourselves more on topics that directly influence our health and wellbeing. Words like ‘enriched’ (meaning a small amount of what was stripped out of the natural product is mixed in again) or refined and organic are used to trick consumers into believing that the products are offering more. This then also leads to a higher price tag of course. If you go to the dictionary, the word Nat’u’ral means existing in or caused by nature. It most certainly does not mean manmade or manipulated by the interference of man.

We at Angelfactory value this natural status and use all our ingredients as nature intended and as created by God. We also do not use any oils from hybrid plant species that was genetically modified. This is also the main reason why we do not use sunflower oil in any of our products. The word or term organic is also used very loosely today for a wide array of products which then qualifies them for excessive pricing. They word itself means related to or derived from living matter. That is something that we value and stay true to but unfortunately some certification authorities charge huge amounts of money without honouring the true meaning of organic which excludes the use of chemicals, herbicides, insecticides and pesticides. At Angelfactory we want everyone to be able to afford 100% natural skincare products that will heal and restore their skin and general health as our products help to strengthen the immune system, which in turn will benefit overall health and wellbeing. Our company are not profit driven and our products are affordable. We invest most of our earnings back into research as we truly believe that everyone should be able to take a nice long bath and have a healthy, glowing skin without the itching, burning and flaking an inflamed skin causes.

The main reason our products work so well is because all our efforts are focused on skin nutrition and nutrients essential to skin renewal and regeneration. Angelfactory soap provides the skin with the full spectrum of nutrients needed by the skin to repair itself from any damage. We believe that you should never put anything on your skin that you are not willing to put into your mouth as the skin is your biggest organ after all. We see soap as your first line of defence in skincare as it delivers much needed nutrients to the skin. Angelfactory soap is soft on the skin, lathers beautifully and leaves your skin with a healthy glow. Our soap also restores the balance between good and bad bacteria which helps to control skin odours. This is a great benefit for active people looking for healthy alternatives.

Full spectrum nutrients are something we take very seriously. We all know vitamins and minerals that we can buy off the shelf, but unfortunately they only deliver some aspects of the nutrients we need. By using pure oils and wholefoods, you can get the nutrients you need in their complete state, thereby bringing about skin healing and repair. Angelfactory soap includes the full spectrum Vit A, Vit E and Vit C as well as the EFA’s Omega 3, 6 and 9. That is why we can proudly say: “Angelfactory….always the better choice!”

Angelfactory 100% natural soap can be used by the most delicate and sensitive skins and we have a variety of soap which is tailor made to suit different skin types. Our soap will never dry your skin and will always leave you with a happy, healthy glow. Your skin will smell fresh, never overly scented. Our soap is engineered with a high conditioning factor that will keep your skin in a state of wellbeing. Because our focus is purely on the immune system, you will never have irritated, dry or inflamed skin. The essential oils also help with skin odours as it is antifungal and anti- bacterial and restore the skin’s natural balance. At Angelfactory we stock a range of seven different 100% natural bar soaps as well as all natural Shower Gels, Hand wash, Face Washes, Body Oil, Natural Sunscreen, Nail butter and Facial Skin Serums. We believe in no- nonsense skincare at an affordable price. Our biggest reward is the feedback we receive from our long standing client list and we would love for you to become part of the Angelfactory family and share in our passion for Nature, skin healing. Please contact Angelfactory for a complete pricelist or for more information and support.

Christmas is a wonderful time for us humans, but sometimes we are so caught up in the festivities we forget about the dangers to our pets. There are lots of hazards that can cause major issues for our pets. Pets such as cats and dogs are normally in the house and even involved in some of the festivities, so they are more at risk. It’s important to be aware of the things that can harm your pets and keep them well away from them. Don’t leave things lying around and take extra precautions to keep things out of reach. Here are ten hazards for pets at Christmas time.

•Chocolate Chocolate is extremely poisonous to dogs. The higher the percentage the worse it is, dark chocolate causes the most problems. We all eat a lot of chocolate and often receive it as gifts at Christmas time. Keep chocolate away from dogs and pets throughout the festive season.

•Tinsel Tinsel is very dangerous for pets for a number of reasons. Firstly, they can get tangled up in it and even strangle themselves. Secondly, they may be tempted to eat it. Swallowing tinsel can cause major digestive issues and it can even get stuck in their stomach. If they try and eat it they may choke on it. Take care when using tinsel on your tree and around your home in December.

•Fairy lights Fairy lights present the same dangers as tinsel but there is also a chance of your pet getting electrocuted. Don’t let them anywhere near fairy lights and they may be tempted to chew on them. The glass in the lights can also cut your pet and cause serious issues if they swallow it. Keep all pets away from fairy lights.

•Overeating This may not seem like a serious problem but it is a big concern for pets. It’s so easy to overfeed pets over the festive season thinking we are spoiling them and making them happy. Don’t change their diet, stick to what you normally feed them. A lot of the foods we eat over Christmas are full of fat and your pet will pile on the pounds in no time. Obesity is a big concern for pets as it causes debilitating health and joint problems.

•Alcohol Alcohol is very toxic to dogs. It can cause nausea, vomiting, loss of coordination, disorientation, cardiac arrest, seizures and sometimes even death. Keep an eye on your pets when you are drinking alcohol to make sure they don’t try and steal any. Also be aware of foods that contain alcohol such as alcoholic chocolates.

•Christmas tree decorations All those fascinating decorations you put on your tree can be very intriguing to pets. They are in fun shapes and sizes and look like the perfect toys to play with, they are not. Christmas tree decorations are not made for pets and contain harmful things that your pet could swallow. Make sure your decorations are high enough and kept out of reach.

•Cooked meat bones Take care when throwing away cooked meat. Your pet could try and get into the bins and eat the bones. Cooked bones can be very dangerous to pets as they can splinter and get stuck in their stomach. Dispose of all meat safely where your pet can’t get to it. You may want to invest in a special rubbish bin that your pet can’t get into.

•Raisins and grapes Both grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs. Raisins are also in lots of different foods that we eat such as mince pies and Christmas pudding, so avoid giving your dog anything that might contain raisins. Raisins can cause kidney failure in some dogs.

•Christmas tree Believe it or not, your Christmas tree is also a hazard to your pets. Make sure it is placed in a safe place in the home and is securely properly. The last thing you want is for your Christmas tree to fall on top of your pet, some of the larger trees can be extremely heavy. If you have a natural tree you also need to be careful with the needles as they can get stuck in your pets feet and fur. If swallowed they can cause severe stomach issues. The water used to keep a Christmas tree nourished can also cause issues if your pet tried to drink it.

•Mistletoe and holly Mistletoe and holly are also poisonous for pets. Holly can cause severe gastrointestinal upset and mistletoe can cause mild gastrointestinal irritation. Other plants that are dangerous include lilies and daffodils.

A parable about the Seven Aspects of Spiritual Intelligence On the Fifth Night is the extraordinary story of a man named Mark Hanson who loses his first wife to Huntington’s Disease … and then, on a fateful day, many years later, punches his second wife in the face in a moment of madness. That moment of madness is the start of Mark’s transformative journey along a path of mystical presences, unhinged reflections and surreal travels through space and time.

Mark’s story blurs the lines between sanity and insanity, and between life and death. It stands as an eternal testament to the glorious mystery and uncharted depths of human consciousness. The Buddhist Retreat Centre, where people of all religions, and none, come to experience peace and tranquility.

How to Retreat The Buddhist Retreat Centre offers various types of retreats, ranging from those investigating Buddhist thought and philosophy, through to practice retreats where the emphasis is on meditation; as well as retreats featuring bird watching, cookery, drumming, pottery and photography. At first glance the latter might appear to be unrelated to Buddhism but even these retreats will contain some element of meditation, of mindful awareness, refracting the chosen subject matter through a Buddhist lens. People from all walks of life come to these retreats with a variety of motivations and expectations. Perhaps they want to deepen their meditation practice, to take some time out from a hectic working life; to reflect on a tense domestic situation; to consider the trajectory of their lives; to make a decision about a way forward. Maybe they just want to learn how to take a good photograph. Each person will have a different reason for going on a retreat. Different paths will have led them to this place. We all need to make an appointment with ourselves from time to time. To re-connect with who we are; to maintain balance; to recharge exhausted batteries. To make time to go on a retreat is a necessary and healthy step for anyone.

Upcoming Retreats The retreat schedule from November 2016 to October 2017 is now available View full retreat schedule and details NEXT 6 RETREATS Tue Dec 20 - Tue Dec 27Awakening From The Illusion Of Separateness: A Zen retreat Thu Dec 29 - Sun Jan 01Endings And Beginnings: New Year At The BRC Sun Jan 01 - Tue Jan 03Decisions! General Information The Centre has been established on an exquisite 125-hectare country estate near the village of Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal 90 kilometers south of Pietermaritzburg, one and a half hours’ drive from Durban. Set in hilly grasslands amongst dams, indigenous bush and forests, it overlooks one of the great valleys in the Umkomaas river system. CNN featured the BRC as one of the ten finest retreat centres in the world. It was awarded Natural Heritage status by President Nelson Mandela in recognition of its success in establishing indigenous vegetation on the property and providing habitats for wildlife to return, including the endangered Blue Swallow. It is a birder’s paradise with more 160 species recorded. Walks lead to many interesting sites and viewpoints on the property, including evidence that Bushman lived there and Voortrekkers and Settlers passed through. In 2000, the BRC facilitated the founding of Woza Moya, the community-based NGO, located in Ufafa valley. It continues to support the organisation in a variety of ways.

Accommodation Fifty retreatants can be accommodated in single and twin-bedded rooms, en-suite cottages and thatched chalets overlooking the secluded valleys on the property – a short distance away from the dining room, office, library, studio and meditation hall. The Centre is justly famous for its fine lactoovo vegetarian cuisine which is featured in its own best-selling recipe books, Quiet Food, The Cake the Buddha Ate and Plentiful: The Big Book Of Buddha Food. The BRC menu includes organically grown vegetables and farm-baked bread.

Observances The Retreat Centre offers a tranquil environment for the study and practice of philosophy, psychology, meditation and the arts associated with Buddhist culture. The Centre therefore encourages adherence to traditional Buddhist moral principles during retreats, such as respect for all forms of life and abstinence from alcoholic drinks and hallucinogenic drugs. Noble Silence is maintained from the last meditation at night until the first session after breakfast in the morning. During some retreats, Noble Silence is maintained throughout. Pets are not allowed at the Centre. Only some retreats are suitable for children: please check with the Administrator.

Intro to Buddhism It's a "Middle Way" The Buddhist tradition is centered in the Enlightenment experience of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, who was born in Nepal and taught his doctrine in India during the sixth century BC. His teachings are at once revolutionary and self-evident, and extraordinarily relevant to the modern world. He maintained that the nature of reality and the meaning of our existence cannot be captured in theories, concepts and beliefs, but are realised experientially - in compassionate, mindful living.

A central teaching in Buddhism is that we forego great beauty and meaning in our lives by allowing ourselves to be driven by a compulsive self-centeredness, obsessive, mindless attachments and all manner of habitual delusions and wishful thinking. Buddhism, however, also teaches that we can radically reshape the way we perceive and experience things. This can be done through transformative mental practices [meditation] and behavioural disciplines. These are outlined in the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path and a number of other philosophical and psychological teachings and methods. Buddhism, therefore, is an attitude more than a belief; a way of experiencing the world rather than an attempt to explain it. Known as the Middle Way, Buddhism has no need for extreme opinions and exclusive dogmas. This self-reliant outlook imbues it with a rare sense of dignity, joy, gentleness and freedom - qualities that appeal to increasing numbers of people who have grown tired of the authoritative pronouncements of priests and scientists, millennial prophets and selfimprovement gurus. Buddhism is neither theistic nor atheistic; it is non-theistic. It therefore does not challenge or compete with other religions. Hence, followers of all religious denominations and philosophical persuasions are welcome to attend any retreat program. No membership, allegiance or conversion is expected or required.

Dhamma Shop From sock monkeys to singing bowls - you will find them all - and more - in the BRC shop. The BRC shop has an exquisite and exotic range of products. The emphasis is on stocking items that express a Zen-like simplicity and quality. Apart from meditation cushions and stools and a selection of books on Buddhism, there are music CD’s conducive to a meditative mood. You will find Charlotte Rhys products, as well as a variety of Japanese incense, and a chic range of Zen-style pottery and Anthony Shapiro’s classic bowls, pots, large ginger jars and vases, some decorated with sumie brushwork by Louis, and perfectly tuned wind chimes. New to the shop are the beautiful silver Chakra bracelets on black cord.

Dharmagiri draws inspiration from the mountain where it is nestled, which in Zulu is called Mvuleni (place of rain, also place of openings), and in English Bamboo Mountain (due to a rare Alpine bamboo that grows on the mountain.) It is a small center hosts meditation retreats and educational courses. In alliance with the international Buddhist community, Dharmagiri also supports outreach in its local rural community.
