It’s a new year and many people are in the mood for making a fresh start. And that often means giving something up (cigarettes, alcohol, junk food). Unfortunately, the odds of sticking with new year resolutions are not good. Come February, 80% of people will have given up giving up. So what can we learn from the 20% who make it? Some might just be lucky, but most – whether they realise it or not – will be using techniques based on scientific evidence. While you might feel you have little in common with people who overcome drug dependency, you can benefit from the techniques that have been shown to help this group.

The two Ps Perseverance underpins most stories of successful change, and it can take anywhere from six to 30 attempts to quit for those dependent on drugs to become abstinent. While these numbers might seem off putting, it’s important to be realistic about the need to persevere. Incremental change is known to be superior to overly ambitious targets – appealing as they might be. This leads to the second “p” - planning. Conventional wisdom suggests that planning improves the chances of success, but there is evidence that unplanned attempts to quit smoking can be just as successful. Good news for anyone embarking on an impromptu attempt to change.

So although spontaneous attempts can be successful for smokers, picking the right day to start changing other habits is likely to play a part. We know that motivation and energy fluctuate, so

think about when you will have maximum levels of both. Starting well gives the initial encouragement needed to get to day two.

Learn from lapsing Having a lapse shouldn’t be viewed as a failure or used as an excuse to give up. It can be tempting to view change in a binary way - success or failure. Instead, view a lapse as an opportunity to gain insight, reflecting as honestly as possible on why the lapse happened and how this could be avoided or counteracted on the next attempt at change. Research has repeatedly shown us that these processes are crucial for changing ingrained habits, so much so that in the world of addiction, treatment is often referred to as “relapse prevention”, to acknowledge that treatment is as much about preventing the negative as it is accentuating the positive.

High levels of self-efficacy (a belief and confidence in personal ability) when trying to change behaviour predict ultimate success. Factors that increase self-efficacy include self-talk (“I can do this”), previous success at changing other behaviour or habits, and affirmations from others. Cultural differences can influence how comfortable and skilled an affirmation is. The way Americans routinely affirm each other is in contrast to those in the UK who tend to be suspicious of affirmations. Believing change is possible can be undermined by “anticipatory anxiety” – when a person expects and fears withdrawal symptoms when changing a habit, such as smoking. The anticipated discomfort is usually greater than the actual experience but can paralyse any attempt to test reality. Rather than focusing on what you are losing by giving up smoking or alcohol, think of what you will gain (more money, better sleep). A useful exercise to help assess personal benefits is the decision balance sheet.

Tell someone what you plan to do, you won’t want to let them or yourself down. Weight Watchers employ this type of social contract in some ways to encourage but also as a deterrent to relapse. Shame and guilt are powerful emotions that most people will try to avoid.

So when it comes to adopting a scientific approach to change, the evidence provides some helpful tips. Be prepared for several change attempts, don’t be too ambitious, don’t keep your change a secret and allow yourself to be complimented and encouraged. Finally, today might be the right day to start. If you’ve only just decided, with motivation and energy on your side, your chances of ditching that bad habit are just as good as those who’ve spent weeks preparing. Making a change is relatively easy for most of us, maintaining that change is evidently a lot tougher. So while some might be lucky enough to make a change and stick to it, most of us will have to keep trying, the science suggests we’ll get there in the end.

There’s a saying that goes “We have two ears and one mouth – so that we can listen more than we speak”. And there definitely is a difference between listening and hearing. Has there been a time when you have been speaking to someone and they’ve answered you completely out of context to what you said or just gave you a one worded answer? This is passive listening. In other words the other person is not fully present in the moment giving you their undivided attention. They may be distracted, thinking of something else, are not interested in the topic on hand, or may just plainly not have much time for you. Considering that 7% of our communication is verbal, 55% is visual (i.e. body language) and 38% is voice (tone, inflection, etc) there are a lot of cues to be looking out for when interacting with someone. Active listening is being fully present in the moment. It means being aware of where you are at in your own head (your emotional state), how you are

contributing to the conversation (body language etc), and your impact on the other person (is it positive or negative) and how the other is impacting on you (your reaction). When we are fully present in a conversation, not only are we giving that person our undivided attention, we are also showing them respect and that we value them as a person and what they are sharing with us.

They say that 90% of problems in relationships (personal or peer) is due to the lack of communication – either what is not being said (fear of not feeling safe to share, retaliation etc) or what is not being heard (lack of understanding, not being able to see things from the other person’s perspective). Most of the time we listen to respond instead of really hear what the other person has to say. We are so busy preparing our response that we miss vital pieces of information that are coming our way.

This primarily has to do with how the brain is wired, to look for the negative. Our brain reacts more strongly to stimuli it deems negative – this stems back to our early days where it was all about survival (and still is today). One way to ensure you are fully present and tuned in to what the other person is saying is to use mirroring. Mirroring is a psychological phenomenon in which people mimic speech patterns, gestures and nonverbal behaviours of others. Research has shown that people who use mirroring effectively tend to build a good rapport with the other person and can be seen in a positive light.

The more the relational space (i.e. the space between two people) is safe and open, the better the relating that will take place – in other words, the better the quality of the conversation, communication and the relationship as a whole.

I hear many stories of where couples have hidden their spending or debt from each other and this has caused conflict in their relationship. In other words there has been financial infidelity. Couples don’t intentionally start off hiding their spending or debt from each other. Rather this has evolved over time as situations or arguments about money have arisen resulting in one or both partners not being completely honest with each other when it comes to their money habits. This usually stems our upbringing and where we learned our money values from i.e. how our parents managed money and the principles they passed on to us or that we experienced growing up. Therefore when it comes to a relationship, one of you may be a spender and one of you may be a saver which can create conflict when it comes to relationship money matters. So how important is it to disclose your financials with each other? Relationships that have a strong foundation can overcome any challenge they are faced with and Trust is a big factor when it comes to building a strong foundation in a relationship. Our background plays a large role in how we feel about money, how we manage money and what our money values are. If partners have different perspectives about money based on their upbringing, it can cause conflict and result in partners hiding their money.

You shouldn’t have to disclose every penny you spend, however there should be transparency on earnings, who is paying for what when it comes to household or lifestyle expenses. This should be discussed relative to each other’s income levels so that is deemed fair. Financial infidelity can have a huge impact on a relationship or marriage When partners have had numerous discussions around finances and assume there is a common

understanding or that they are on the same page where managing money is concerned only to find out later this is not the case, can have some serious impact on the relationship. It can cause a lot of anger, resentment, hurt, pain, betrayal and trust issues as well as severe financial implications should there have been reckless spending or debt incurred.

What are the implications when it comes to hiding debt or unwanted spending behaviour from each other? Depending on the type of relationship (e.g. married via ANC or In Community of Property), if a partner has not been transparent with their money management, they may well have created a situation that puts not only the relationship at risk but also the credibility of their partner due to being reckless or making hasty decisions. This can result in the loss of their assets (e.g. home), as well as have the innocent partner liable for debt that they had no idea about, was not involved in or had any part in the process leaving them being black-listed and paying off unwanted debt for years to come.

How do couples start the conversation about finances and when is the right time to talk about it? Money conversations should start early on in the relationship once it has progressed to a more serious level (e.g. being mutually exclusive, moving in together etc). However there are some common signs or red flags one can look out for in the beginning stages of a relationship: • • •

When you go out, notice and observe who pays for what. Does your partner always wait for you to take out your wallet, do you split the bill/go dutch, do you take turns paying etc? Notice your partners spending habits, are they always shopping for the latest gadgets, fashion or trending items? Observe how your partner speaks about money issues eg. savings, investments, managing debt. Observe how your partner tips when it comes to restaurants, petrol attendants etc

Money conversations should really happen before a couple moves in together, there should be transparency on who is earning what and how that can be used as a guide to share household expenses e.g. you can expect your partner to pay half of everything when they earn a substantially lower amount than you (it should be split proportionately).

Couples can even go as far as drawing up a household budget, allocate who pays for what, perhaps even open up a joint expenses account where they deposit their portion into and the balance they keep as their own individual money that they are free to spend as they wish however, there should still be ground rules and discussions when it comes to large purchases, loans or other such money topics to prevent any nasty surprises. What are your options should you find yourself in a situation where there has been financial Infidelity? Have a discussion with your partner that requires complete transparency. You may need to do a complete review of your financial situation and seek legal input if necessary (e.g. debt review, legal obligations/consequences etc). Reset the boundaries going forward in your relationship as to how each of you will conduct your financial contributions and money management. If couples cannot have this conversation themselves they may need to seek the help of a professional to assist them with the process.

Love Your Body Appreciate Every Inch of You

You were like that, and then somewhere along the line you listened to others who told you that you were “not good enough.” You began to criticize your body, thinking perhaps that that’s where your flaws were. Let’s drop all that nonsense and get back to loving our bodies and accepting them totally as they are. Of course they will change—and if we give our bodies love, they will change for the better. The subconscious mind has no sense of humor and does not know false from true. It only accepts what we say and what we think as the material from which it builds. By repeating these positive affirmations over and over, you will be planting new seeds in the fertile soil of your subconscious mind, and they will become true for you.

I Love My Body My body is a glorious place to live. I rejoice that I have chosen this particular body because it is perfect for me in this lifetime. It is the perfect size and shape and color. It serves me so well. I marvel at the miracle that is my body. I choose the healing thoughts that create and maintain my healthy body and make me feel good. I love and appreciate my beautiful body! When you practice affirmations to Love Your Body, stand in front of the mirror and repeat each new thought pattern ten times. Do this twice a day. Also write your affirmations ten times during the day. Work with one affirmation a day. You can also write your own positive affirmations. Then if there is any part of your body you still dislike or have a problem with—use that particular affirmation daily for at least a month, or until positive change takes place. If doubts or fears or negative thoughts come up, just recognize them for what they are—old limiting beliefs that want to stay around. They have no power over you. Say to them gently, “Out! I no longer need you.” Then repeat your affirmations again.

Where you stop working is where your resistance is. Notice the part of your body that you don’t want to love. Give this part extra attention so you may go beyond the limitation. Release the resistance. In this way, within a short time, you will have a body you really love. And your body will respond by giving you excellent health. Each part of your body will be working perfectly as a harmonious whole. You will even find lines disappearing, weight normalizing and posture straightening.

Did you know that chronic stress can affect your body’s ability to recuperate from physical, mental or emotional stress? This is likely why most people have dealt with adrenal fatigue at some point in their lives. Many proponents of this condition estimate that almost every person can experience adrenal fatigue, also known as hypoadrenia, to some degree at a particularly stressful point in his or her life. Because the adrenals influence many parts of the body, symptoms of adrenal fatigue can mimic a number of disorders and isn’t always easily recognizable. Adrenal fatigue symptoms, like brain fog, moodiness and trouble sleeping, can be indicative of many disorders and are often overlooked by doctors. But more and more people are starting to realize that a combination of these health issues often indicate the onset of adrenal fatigue.

If you have adrenal fatigue, it can have significant effects on your overall health. Luckily, you can improve this common issue naturally by focusing on your nutrient-intake and lifestyle choices.

What Is Adrenal Fatigue? A relatively new term, “adrenal fatigue” was proposed as a new condition in 1998 by Dr. James L. Wilson, a naturopath and chiropractor. His assumption was that an overstimulation of the adrenal glands (or “adrenals”) by long-term stress could lead to an inconsistent level of cortisol (the stress hormone) in the bloodstream. In addition to this overload or improper stress hormone levels, people with adrenal fatigue often don’t have enough DHEA, the “parent hormone” responsible for the creation of many necessary hormones in the body. Dr. Wilson describes the unique progression of adrenal fatigue throughout the day as follows: • you wake up and are unable to function without a significant amount of caffeine • you finally feel a boost of energy during the early part of the day • then your energy levels crash around 2 p.m., rise around 6 p.m., fall again around 9 p.m. • your energy finally peaks again at 11 p.m.

Is adrenal fatigue real? The major issue with recognizing or diagnosing adrenal fatigue is the inability to distinguish its symptoms and patterns from other disorders. The parameters for this condition are nonspecific which, unfortunately, has led to a great controversy around this topic, even though the very nature of cortisol and bodily hormones is that their effects are far-reaching. A diagnosis for this condition is difficult because stress hormone levels typically fall in what conventional medicine would call “inside the normal range,” although the symptoms are clear to those suffering from the condition.

People who believe that adrenal fatigue isn’t a real health concern often state that consistent levels of chronic stress have no effect on the adrenals and the only true endocrine disorders are those caused by other diseases and direct damage to the adrenal glands. However, many practitioners of natural medicine know, from experience in a healthcare practice and supporting scientific evidence, that hypoadrenia is very real and associated with a number of complications.

In addition, adrenal fatigue treatment is relatively non-invasive and is beneficial to your health, no matter the diagnosis. Of course, you should be under the care of a qualified medical professional, such as a functional medicine doctor, you trust and see them about any symptoms you experience (of any disease) so that they can determine appropriate treatment.

What Are Your Adrenal Glands? Your adrenal glands (adrenals) are two thumb-sized organs that sit above your kidneys and are part of the endocrine system. Also known as the suprarenal glands, they’re involved in producing over 50 hormones that drive almost every bodily function, many of which are essential for life.

The adrenal glands work closely with the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland in a system known as the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis).

Adrenal glands play a huge role in stress response. Here’s how it works: • Your brain registers a threat, whether emotional, mental or physical. • The adrenal medulla releases cortisol and adrenaline hormones to help you react to the threat (the fightor-flight response), rushing blood to your brain, heart and muscles. • The adrenal cortex then releases corticosteroids to dampen processes like digestion, immune system response and other functions not necessary for immediate survival.

Your adrenal glands are also responsible for balancing hormones.

Comparisons When discussing problems with adrenal function, it’s important to understand that adrenal fatigue is not the same thing as adrenal insufficiency, Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome/Cushing’s disease.

Here’s a quick breakdown of these conditions and how they are different than adrenal fatigue:

Adrenal Insufficiency and Addison’s Disease • Symptoms found in adrenal insufficiency that are not found in adrenal fatigue include major digestive issues, weight loss, low blood sugar, headache and sweating. • Primary adrenal insufficiency is what is known as Addison’s disease and occurs when the adrenal glands are damaged by some type of trauma and can’t produce enough cortisol or aldosterone. • Secondary adrenal insufficiency (which is more common) occurs when the pituitary gland stops producing adenocorticotropin (ACTH). ACTH is what stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. • What differentiates this condition from adrenal fatigue? More often than not, adrenal fatigue is modeled by an overabundance of stress hormone levels, often at the “wrong” times, while adrenal insufficiency is a consistent inability to produce cortisol. • The largest difference between them is that people with adrenal fatigue usually have cortisol levels that fall in “normal” levels but not “optimal,” while adrenal insufficiency patients have cortisol levels consistently outside the normal range.

Cushing’s Syndrome/Disease •

Cushing’s disease is an extremely rare disease that involves the overproduction of cortisol, outside the normal levels, that most often affects women between 25–40. This condition is sometimes the result of tumors and in other cases, there is no known cause. Cushing’s can be reversed and is defined as a “curable” condition by the National Institute of Health. Unique symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome (called Cushing’s disease when caused by a pituitary tumor) include abdominal/facial weight gain, male impotence, failure to menstruate, increased risk of miscarriage, high blood sugar and high blood pressure.

Causes Adrenal fatigue is a condition where your body and adrenal glands can’t keep up with the tremendous amount of daily stress many people experience. Sometimes misunderstood as an autoimmune disorder, adrenal fatigue can mimic some precursors to other common illnesses and disease. Wellness doctors and practitioners believe that an episode of acute stress or prolonged (especially for over a year), ongoing stress can cause adrenal glands to become overloaded and ineffective, then improperly release cortisol. They believe that hypoadrenia can be caused by: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Stressful experiences like death of loved one, divorce or surgery Exposure to environmental toxins and pollution Prolonged stress due to financial hardship, bad relationships or work environment, and other conditions that entail feelings of helplessness Negative thinking and emotional trauma Lack of sleep Poor diet (including crash diets and inconsistent nutrition) and lack of exercise Pain Food sensitivities Adverse events in childhood Surgery Reliance on stimulants like caffeine or energy drinks Rheumatoid arthritis Diabetes/impaired glucose levels

Can stress cause extreme fatigue? Yes, it absolutely can. One study found that students undergoing chronic, long-term stress when prepping for medical exams at the end of their educational careers impaired the students’ cortisol awakening response.

By limiting this surge in cortisol that naturally occurs every morning when you wake up to help you feel alert, stress inhibits your ability to wake up fully, no matter how much sleep you get. Adrenal Fatigue Tests Tests for adrenal fatigue are, unfortunately, another source of confusion for many. You should know ahead of time that these tests must be done by someone who understands the nature of adrenal fatigue and that tests for adrenal fatigue are rarely definitive.

The most common of these tests include testing bodily fluid for cortisol. Blood tests are almost never helpful in this regard, but a 24-hour salivary panel may help your doctor recognize abnormal cortisol patterns, including a lack or overload of stress response. Many doctors also test thyroid function in conjunction with cortisol levels because of the way these hormonal systems are interconnected. If you have adrenal fatigue, it’s possible that the eye contraction will last no more than two minutes and the eyes will dilate even when still exposed to direct light.

Postural Low Blood Pressure Test: In healthy individuals, blood pressure rises when rising from a laying position. Using a blood pressure monitor, you can test your pressure when laying down and then after standing. If you see no rise or a drop in your levels, it’s possible your adrenals have been weakened.

Conventional Treatment Because of the controversial nature of this condition, you may need to seek out a naturopath who will help you treat adrenal fatigue with a combination of dietary advice and supplement recommendations, as well as any hormonal or other medications necessary. Studies indicate that an oral dose of 20 milligrams of hydrocortisone is recommended by some for routine cortisol management, while an occasional dose of 50 milligrams may be prescribed, but should not be taken regularly or in higher doses.

Processed and microwaved foods: First of all, the microwave has its own dangers, but additionally, most microwaveable, ultraprocessed foods have many preservatives and fillers that are hard to digest and wear out your body’s energy and digestion cycle. However, the words we say have a great impact on our body and our ability to heal. Regardless of what diet and supplements you take, your environment is one of the most important components. So, be kind to yourself. Try to avoid saying negative things about yourself and others. It’s important to choose to be around positive people and stay positive about yourself as well. Many people roll their eyes at such advice, but it’s scientifically proven that it’s possible to reduce pathological worry by practicing “thought replacement,” a positive self-talk practice that involves verbally reciting positive outcomes to stressful situations.

The number of Australians living in high-rise apartments doubled between 1991 and 2011 and that trend has continued since then. The quarter-acre dream is fast disappearing and larger blocks and family gardens along with it. As more people move from country areas to the city and as land to build homes near the city centre becomes scarce, we’re getting further and further away from nature. It turns out this isn’t great for our health. The change in urban environments because of development, associated with a rapid increase in chronic disease, is a global phenomenon in developed countries. In the past children grew up running on bare soil and grass, explored backyard farms and gardens, climbed trees and were exposed to a high level of bacteria. And the diversity of the bacteria can change if an individual is exposed to different environmental conditions. One of these conditions is living in a high-rise apartment far away from land, soil, trees and plants. Being close to nature is linked to positive mental well-being – and people living in urban areas have been shown to have a disadvantage in processing stress. This can be at least partially attributed to increased exposure to air pollution and heat stress, and decrease in exercise and fitness through lack of access to a garden or nearby park. The less exposure to nature we have, the less diverse the bacteria in our microbiota. The microbiota is the community of bacteria, fungi and viruses that live in our gut and on our skin. We need a diverse exposure for our body to fight inflammation effectively.

Alteration in the human bacterial communities, including the disappearance of ancient microbiotic species, is thought to cause inflammation in the body. These ancient species were known to encourage development of cells that regulate the immune system (T-cells). When our immune system stays on high alert all the time, instead of resting when no threats are present, this causes inflammation, which can lead to chronic disease.

Where plants come in The bacteria we have are similar to those of plants in that we both carry trillions of good and bad bacteria. The diversity of the microbiota is measured by how many families of bacteria are present. We know the diverse plant microbiome influences plant growth, and humans benefit by eating plant foods. An important research question remains: do we gain another benefit simply by having contact with plants? Plants also remove volatile compounds from the air including ozone and carbon dioxide. They turn the carbon dioxide into oxygen, meaning air quality is drastically improved. Higher oxygen levels inside a small apartment mean well-being may be improved for the occupants. Viewing plants reduces stress and is pleasing to the human eye. Nature therapy (shinrin-yoku), first invented in Japan, has proven beneficial for our health by lowering blood pressure and boosting mental health. This is done by simply going for a mindful walk in the forest.

The reasoning for the law was that green roofs provide: energy savings from better solar reflectivity, evapotranspiration and insulation, green roofs last up to twice as long as regular roofs, and green roofs can beautify and add value to Toronto’s buildings by providing scenic views and recreational areas in dense urban areas. A similarly bold strategy here would benefit not only the health of our apartment dwellers, but also the environment.

Here's what you need to know. Oxygen is needed by every cell in the body for oxidation – the process which breaks down toxins and destroys damaged cells so that they can be excreted in sweat and urine. The chemical formula for ozone is O3 which means it’s made up of three oxygen atoms instead of the two that make up the oxygen (O2) we find in the air we breathe. Ozone is known as ‘activated oxygen’ because it not only has a detox effect, but is also able to kill micro-organisms such as yeasts (for example, candida that causes thrush), moulds and fungi (responsible for allergies), bacteria (which can cause infections) and viruses (ozone is effective against Epstein-Barr and cytomegalovirus, common in chronic fatigue syndrome). The biggest part of healing or making ourselves whole is to accept all of the many parts of ourselves. The times when we did well, and the times when we didn’t do so well. The times when we were terrified, and the times when we were loving. The times when we were very foolish and silly, and the times when we were very bright and clever. The times when we had egg on our faces, and the times when we were winners. All of these are parts of ourselves. Most of our problems stem from rejecting parts of ourselves—not loving ourselves totally and unconditionally. Let’s not look back on our lives with shame. Look at the past as the richness and fullness of Life. Without this richness and fullness, we would not be here today. When we accept all of ourselves, we become whole and healed.

Some years ago, I was discussing the concept of ‘karma’ with a friend. At some point he used the example of a gay man being raped to illustrate how ‘bad karma’ from a past life affects our experiences in this life. Like others who have tried to explain why bad things happen to good people, his explanation was an attempt to justify why someone might manifest such a horrible experience. Our conversation got quite heated as my friend suggested that in a past life the raped man was ‘probably a rapist’. Although I could not disprove his theory, it seemed to me that the rapist was the one with power issues. Of course, it might well be that the gay man’s soul chose to develop certain virtues through the traumatic experience, but the thought that the victim might be the cause of his own suffering gave me pause for thought. If everything happens for a reason, perhaps the rape happened because the rapist had developed a kind of dangerous hypermasculinity threatened by homosexual masculinity? What if the souls had not agreed to the experience of rape, but the abuser, stuck in the ego-mind, violated the sacred contracts anyway? In that case, perhaps the person violating free will would incur ‘bad’ karma in a ‘what goes around comes around’ kind of way? Since then I have reflected a lot on the law of cause and effect, or what some call ‘karma’, especially in relation to my understanding of how consciousness, based on subconscious beliefs, creates reality. I have come to accept that even if we did plant so-called negative karmic seeds in a past life, that does not necessarily mean that our growth in this lifetime must include suffering. Yes, we are born wanting to learn certain lessons, and sometimes this means we experience hardships because we believe (often subconsciously) that that is the only way the Universe can get us to learn. But what if it could be easier? What happens if we gain the understanding through enlightenment rather than pain? Does the universe say "No, I'm sorry but you have

signed up for another four hundred years of drama, so you are not allowed to do it the easy way?" No! The universe says "You are done. You have now graduated." Once you have learned the lesson, you no longer need to repeat old patterns.

When I meet with a client, I establish if there is anything that is impacting them ‘negatively’. We then use energy healing techniques to determine what subconscious belief programmes are holding certain patterns in place. Some of these limiting beliefs will be ancestral or from past life experiences. We do some digging work to establish how these beliefs may still serve the client. If the client then sees that they can now resolve the issue, then we use energy healing to do that. For example, a client may say that she is unable to manifest abundance. Some intuitive digging work and a visit to the Akashic Records may reveal that in a previous life she was a nun who took a vow of poverty. Some ‘digging’ may reveal that the vow is still protecting the client from greed and keeping her close to God (as defined by her religion in that lifetime). Being abundant is then in violation of her vow and creates guilt which feels bad. Later in the session and if she wants, we can then teach her subconscious mind that she can be safe, abundant and still close to God. If we shift her beliefs that ‘abundance is wrong’ or that ‘God will punish me’, she may then release the vow energetically as it is no longer needed. Required feelings can also be downloaded to the client. The shift in vibration will then shift the quality of her experiences. Facilitating healing does not bypass her lesson, it simply helps her understand what she was learning and grow more quickly. Yes, every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in some way - our souls (and spirit helpers) want us to be aware of our issues. Fortunately, we have tools at our disposal to change our beliefs and our behaviours, resolve old karmic debts (which are simply a divine opportunity for growth and better understanding), remove past-life curses or oaths, forgive and be forgiven, heal and grow. We can make choices that will result in us vibrating energy which attracts positive-feeling experiences and people into our lives, to make our experience on Earth school more fun and enjoyable. We just need to be mindful of what energies and messages we are putting out into the universe so that we have more control, if you like, of what we manifest.

Each crystal formation and colour has its own frequency. This affects the structure and function of each crystal. Giving each one their own individual numerical frequency. Remember energy is a frequency. They too have an innate ability to communicate with humans, animals and plants. The simplest example is clear quartz which is used in powering watches, TV's Computers. Everything around us is alive. We are magnetic and electric, absorbing and broadcasting. So with all this in mind there is “World Wide Web “ so to speak. And as an aside, thank you to the worldwide web that has connected us with infinite amounts of information, studies and truth. If we slow down our breath, with our intention we can tune in and connect to all living beings. Be it plants, animals, rocks, water. We are all affecting each other all the time. Intention plays a very important part in our everyday lives. And this has a profound effect on the quantum field.

For a delicious and energy sustaining and naturally gluten-free breakfast try this ancient grain.

Ingredients

Porridge 4. Rinse the amaranth in a sieve under a cold running tap to remove the saponins (natural compounds that leave a slightly bitter taste). 5. Tip the amaranth into a small pan, pour in 325ml water, cover and set aside. 6. The next morning, bring the pan with the amaranth to the boil, turn down the heat then cover the pan and cook for 10-15 minutes until the grains are tender and the Method: liquid has been absorbed. You wouldn’t know it by looking at me today, but 6 years ago I was living a completely unhealthy lifestyle. For years I’d struggled with my weight and had no understanding of how to live a healthy, balanced life. I just wanted to lose weight and lose it fast, so I took extreme measures, trying every fad diet and insane exercise program out there, only to end up back where I started — or even worse off. I believed that if I wanted to make a noticeable change in my life and in my body, it had to be drastic. I thought getting fit meant I had to hate every second of every workout and hope that it would pay off eventually. I endured hours at the gym, meal after meal of bland, boring food and a constant internal battle just to finally feel “normal.” Well, six years and 45 pounds later, I can tell you I was SO wrong… If you’re looking to finally get fit or just live a healthier life overall, creating a new fitness routine is the necessary first step — but it’s also the hardest part for most people. And whether you’re a student, a busy mom or a successful entrepreneur, finding time to work out can feel like one more (unenjoyable) thing you need to add to your to-do list. South Africa Has Huge ‘Green Fuels’ Potential. But It Needs To Act Now South Africa needs to seriously start thinking about shifting its energy focus. This is for two reasons. The first is that the country’s important exports – coal and platinum – face potential collapse with the imminent shift of global energy markets. A number of factors are driving this. Conscious Life Magazine


The move away from vehicles powered by petrol and diesel to ones powered by electric batteries is gathering pace. Two thirds of the demand for platinum depends on combustion engines where it is used for the hardening of spark plug tips and in vehicle exhaust autocatalysts.

The second major reason that the country needs to refocus its energy situation is there’s a major switch from coal to renewables underway in the world. And South Africa itself can’t continue its current levels of dependency on coal. South Africa is the 14th largest emitter of carbon dioxide, and on a per capita basis, the 10th largest emitter. It leads the pack in Africa, and already faces considerable environmental issues in Mpumalanga, where state energy provider Eskom’s coal fired power stations and Sasol’s coal-to-liquid plant are located. Sasol and Eskom account for more than 50% of the country’s carbon emissions. It can address both these challenges by pursuing a feasible solution waiting to be exploited. The country could make use of its natural comparative advantages in wind and solar power to generate electricity. By linking these accessible resources to technologies such as FischerTropsch, it’s in an ideal position to open another chapter in export-led economic development.

The Fischer-Tropsch technology was developed to exploit coal by converting the mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen – produced by heating coal at high temperature in a process known as gasification – to liquid fuels. The process was introduced into South Africa in the 1950s to reduce the country’s reliance on imported oil. Sasol is now a global leader in the technology and has more experience than any other company in the conversion of hydrocarbon gas to liquid fuels. Moving in this direction also presents a golden opportunity for South Africa to transition from being a key contributor to global warming to becoming a key contributor to global emissions reductions.

The technology South Africa can use its supply of solar and wind to produce hydrogen from water in a process known as hydrolysis. A cheap and reliable source of hydrogen is essential for the production of green fuels. To date, this technology has been too expensive. But advances in fuel cells have made large-scale hydrogen production cheaper and more accessible. More importantly, if the hydrogen is made with renewable energy, it is a “green” feedstock.

The green hydrogen can then be combined with carbon, captured from existing flue gas or from the air, to make liquid fuels and petrochemicals using Fischer-Tropsch technology. The present Sasol technology relies on coal as the source of carbon and is unsustainable. The possible innovation – which South Africa is in a prime position to exploit – will be to combine green carbon with green hydrogen to make liquid fuel. There are substantial export opportunities for such “green” fuels and petrochemicals. This market could generate export revenue to replace lost revenues from declining coal and platinum exports.

The green hydrogen could also substitute fertiliser and explosives imports. About 60% of South Africa’s fertiliser is presently imported. The hydrogen could be combined with nitrogen from the air to make ammonia using the well-established Haber process, and the ammonia then converted firstly to ammonium nitrate and then to fertiliser and explosives. The hydrogen step undertaken with fuel cells would create local demand for platinum because the metal is used as the catalyst in hydrogen fuel cells. In addition, the renewable power stations could provide cheap power to supplement Eskom’s constrained supply. These new industries would have two knock-on effects: they would create jobs and the would move the country towards zero carbon emissions.

The jet fuel opportunity One of the “green fuels” that has huge potential is jet fuel. The aviation industry is under intense pressure to find alternatives to fossil fuels and reduce its emissions. This isn’t surprising. The total global market for aviation fuel is about $300 billion and air travel accounts for 2.5% of the global carbon emissions. This is equivalent to 900 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. This value could triple by 2050 and consume 25% of the global carbon budget. This demand could be replaced entirely by the advent of green liquid fuels, produced from green hydrogen and carbon captured from the atmosphere. The market for green aviation fuel is an attractive possibility for South Africa. To date, a viable solution has not been possible. Now, this outlook has changed with the possibility of fuel-cell hydrogen and technologies for carbon capture.

Three other technologies also matter: wind and solar power, as well as Fischer Tropsch technology. These are all well established in South Africa. The country’s renewable power bidding rounds have shown wind and solar power to be the lowest cost source of power. And Sasol has been operating Fischer Tropsch reactors for over 50 years. Unfortunately, South Africa’s public-funded research and development efforts have been directed mainly into how to use hydrogen, instead of how to make hydrogen. It has been focused on using hydrogen to beneficiate platinum (processing it to enhance its properties) for vehicle fuel cells instead of concentrating on finding a commercial source of hydrogen which could be used in multiple applications. For its part, Sasol has made a substantial research and development effort, but it is not looking at lowering the costs of hydrolysis. Government should shift the focus of research and development spending in partnership with Sasol to tackle this challenge and open a new cleaner, greener chapter in South Africa’s history. Internationally several pilot facilities are in construction or are being planned. But they don’t have South Africa’s natural advantage in wind and solar resources. Nor do they have South Africa’s experience with Fischer Tropsch technology.

emissions. It should seize a first-mover advantage.

But will the South African government and Sasol make the necessary moves? Given the potential for local employment, rescuing the platinum industry, reducing the country’s carbon emissions and earning much needed foreign exchange, it seems a logical decision.

Keep in mind, if your dog is ingesting coconut oil, it’s best to start with very small amounts. If your dog has diarrhea or greasy stools, you may be giving too much oil, and you should reduce the dose. It’s recommended that you consult your veterinarian before adding new food or regime to your dog’s diet. Some dogs may be allergic to coconut oil and experience an adverse reaction, so again, starting with a small amount at first is recommended. The Buddhist Retreat Centre, where people of all religions, and none, come to experience peace and tranquility. General Information The Centre has been established on an exquisite 125-hectare country estate near the village of Ixopo, KwaZuluNatal 90 kilometers south of Pietermaritzburg, one and a half hours’ drive from Durban.

Set in hilly grasslands amongst dams, indigenous bush and forests, it overlooks one of the great valleys in the Umkomaas river system. CNN featured the BRC as one of the ten finest retreat centres in the world. It was awarded Natural Heritage status by President Nelson Mandela in recognition of its success in establishing indigenous vegetation on the property and providing habitats for wildlife to return, including the endangered Blue Swallow. Accommodation Fifty retreatants can be accommodated in single and twin-bedded rooms, en-suite cottages and thatched chalets overlooking the secluded valleys on the property – a short distance away from the dining room, office, library, studio and meditation hall.

The Centre is justly famous for its fine lacto-ovo vegetarian cuisine which is featured in its own bestselling recipe books, Quiet Food, The Cake the Buddha Ate and Plentiful: The Big Book Of Buddha Food. The BRC menu includes organically grown vegetables and farm-baked bread.

Observances The Retreat Centre offers a tranquil environment for the study and practice of philosophy, psychology, meditation and the arts associated with Buddhist culture. The Centre therefore encourages adherence to traditional Buddhist moral principles during retreats, such as respect for all forms of life and abstinence from alcoholic drinks and hallucinogenic drugs. Noble Silence is maintained from the last meditation at night until the first session after breakfast in the morning. During some retreats, Noble Silence is maintained throughout. Pets are not allowed at the Centre. Only some retreats are suitable for children: please check with the Administrator.

Help us bring hope to girls without and choices to those with none. Founded in 2000 by Khanyisile Motsa, and run under her diligent care ever, Home of Hope for Girls is an autonomous, self-started initiative to provide real care for exploited, trafficked and abused children in the city of Johannesburg. It is more than just a residential shelter; it is a loving home where dignity is restored, the past is healed and the girls are given the tools to take control of their futures. Home of Hope also reaches out to the community offering the most vulnerable members support, practical help and a lifeline.

The Background to Home of Hope An estimated 10,000 children are prostitutes in Johannesburg and this figure is increasing. When Khanyisile Motsa relocated to Hillbrow she was shocked to observe girls as young as nine working as prostitutes and selling drugs on the streets at night. Hotel Hope Ministries is a fully registered South African non-profit organisation established with aim of ensuring that each and every child is brought up in a safe, happy and healthy home so that they can grow up and develop into responsible and positive adults. Although children are our main focus, we have a holistic approach to the problem of orphaned and abandoned children. We realise that we need to focus on the cause of the problem too and not only the symptoms. So we have projects to focus on assisting Mothers and Fathers, so that they can look after themselves and their children. Who we are: The Monkey Helpline, started in 1995, is a volunteer group, based in Westville near Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, but operating throughout the province and also anywhere else in South Africa and abroad where our assistance and advice are requested. Our team of dedicated rescuers and rescue assistants, veterinarians, educators, monitors, fund-raisers, administrative assistants and supporters is what makes this project the success that it is today. What we do: As a team we devote our time to educating people about the reasons why the monkeys are here, why monkeys behave the way they do, the things people should do or not do when monkeys are around, and how to humanely keep monkeys away from those places where they are not welcome. Just knowing that monkeys will NOT attack and bite people, and that they DON’T carry rabies, is usually enough to change antagonism and fear into tolerance, and frequently into appreciation. We also run a rescue operation and a “high care” unit. We rescue an average of three monkeys every two days, and their injuries range from wounds sustained during fights with other monkeys, dog bites, being run over by motor vehicles, electrocuted, snared, trapped or poisoned, shot with airguns (pellet/BB guns), catapults, paintball guns and firearms, as well as being caught or injured on razor-wire. Many are babies who are orphaned or injured when mother monkeys are attacked by dogs or other monkeys, or are severely injured or killed in human-related incidents. Over eighty percent of the monkeys we rescue, irrespective of the reason why, have got air-gun pellets lodged in their bodies. Lead pellets cause terrible pain, suffering and a lingering death and no person, adult or child, should ever shoot monkeys, or any other animals, with an air-gun. As the only dedicated monkey rescue project in KwaZulu-Natal, the Monkey Helpline is available to do rescues 24 hours a day, every day! On any given day we are treating ten or more monkeys in our home-based high care unit – frequently in excess of twenty monkeys! Once they have recovered from their injuries these monkeys are released back into their home territory, transferred to a rehabilitation facility or placed in a sanctuary. Education is a vital tool in our hands and we distribute thousands of information leaflets, and visit many schools (at least two schools per week) to do educational talks about the monkeys. During 2009 we spoke to over 40 000 school learners and their teachers. We also do talks to many other interest groups such as police cadets, garden clubs, public service groups, conservation bodies, body corporates, etc. In addition, we advise farmers, businesses, hotels and casinos, housing and golfing estates, botanical gardens etc on the best ways to manage human/monkey “conflict”.

Monkey Helpline networks with a number of other Vervet-related individuals, groups, and general primate- and animal-care NGO’s. NB. There is no charge for the services we offer, but donations towards the cost of running the project are welcome. Without your support we would not be able to change attitudes and legislation in favour of the monkeys nor would we be able to rescue the hundreds that we do every year and alleviate their suffering.
