Dearest Conscious Life Friends I hope that you are well, truly well… It seems, as I observe the various circles of people around me, that many are being challenged by life on myriad aspects of their lives. This is not untrue of my own life at this time. It is for this reason that I have been prompted to share with you some of the activities that I am engaging in to help transition through this phase. I have been using this time to reconnect with and journey back to myself and that which creates joy in my life. In taking the time to really listen to my heart and soul and follow their desires, I allow myself an opportunity to quiet my mind as well as spending some time on activities that give me a break from my life’s challenges. In this process I have also discovered some very interesting truths about myself and allowed myself the space to grow and align more with my life’s path. For instance, I never knew that running would provide me with the space to let go of life’s dramas, reconnect with myself, and feel alive and revitalised. It also provides me with the opportunity to push myself past my perceived boundaries and limitations which in itself is extremely rewarding. Why does this come as a surprise to me? Well, I have hated running since I was a small child. It always caused me to struggle to breathe. I have discovered, of late, that this is because I am more suited to long distance endurance running, where the body is able to get into a rhythm between movement and breath. It would simply seem that my body is not suited for sprinting and exercise such as

HIIT as they make my heart race too high. Proving that it can be empowering listening to one’s body and it’s needs. Another truth that I have discovered is that I am an extroverted introvert. I need a balance between social and alone time. It even seems to extend to needing a balance between the great outdoors and the comforts of my home. Knowing this helps me to better interact with others and find the balance which allows me to recharge before life’s challenges become overwhelming. By listening to my soul urges, I have discovered some new interests and talents within, such as my new found love for the practice of Kendo, Japanese Sword Fighting. I came across Kendo about 4 months ago and it has become an integral part of my weekly routine. It is teaching me so much about myself and what I am capable of. I have finally re-answered my soul’s call to sing and create music and as soon as I did so, all sorts of doors started to open up to me. I met a lady on a retreat who told me about the Music lessons every Saturday morning at WITS in Johannesburg. The three hours per week cover theory, piano and guitar, and its free!! SAMRO (South African Music Rights Organisation) sponsors the training as a way of giving back and nurturing talent, how wonderful is that?! It is through these lessons that the next door opened up for me, when I was introduced to a producer with his own studio who loves my voice and was keen to work with me. We have now embarked on a journey to create music together and I am so excited to see where it goes. Conscious Life Magazine

I have in this time, felt a pull towards further improving my health and fitness, and as such, I have been fitting Yoga and meditation into my daily routine when I can. I discovered at Yoga Flow in April, Wendy Young’s Care of Self Retreat, and the Yoga Bush Retreat hosted by Everything Yoga 5 weeks ago (see more about this on page 11), that my mind, body and soul resonate with the practice of Yoga. And Meditation Since then, I have been attending some of Yoga Works’ Yoga in the Park classes on a Sunday at Emmarentia, and practicing at home in the sunshine. I have found that the practice of the two revitalise my energy, shift my mood and help me to focus throughout my day. They also help me to observe my mind and my emotions to better understand myself while providing the space to process my emotions and stress in a healthy way. Another aspect of my journey to improved health, is a gradual and gentle transition from a pescetarian diet to a largely vegan diet. To this end, I have embarked on Mindmark’s “Transition to a Plant-Based Diet in a Box” course, presented by Angela Toweel. The course seeks to gently transition you over a 5 week period, no matter where you are in your journey. The course covers the health, ethical and environmental benefits of such a diet and guides one each step of the way. I am just starting my second week and already I can feel the difference and how negatively animal products such as cheese, affect my system. I feel much better when I eat plant based foods. If that wasn’t encouragement enough, the beautiful box of healthy, animal friendly foods, skincare and hair products that are included in the course keeps me engaged, inspired and excited about this transition. There really is a WORLD of animal cruelty free products out there that make going vegan really simple.

Through this process of reconnecting with myself, I have found that my mind is given the space to find creative solutions to my challenges because it is energised and positive. I invite you now, in the face of whatever challenge you may be working through, to reconnect with yourself and really listen to your heart and soul. Give yourself space and time to just be. Try some meditation – there are many apps to help you with this. And ask yourself, what is it that your mind, body and soul need at this time. Then take the time to follow your inner guidance. You CAN find at least 1 hour a week to spend on this. You are worth it and the rewards will be plenty. Take it from a fellow voyager! In line with what I have been talking about, this month’s issue is filled with articles to help you reconnect with yourself, find your happiness and live a more healthy, fulfilling life. Enjoy! It’s the gift of the team at Conscious Life, and our wonderful writers , to you.

PS - EXCITING NEWS: Please watch your inboxes in the next few weeks for our Cruelty Free Stand Alone Guide for 2018-2019. Helping you source and purchase Cruelty Free products for you and your home, restaurants offering vegan cuisine and more. Conscious Life Magazine

My Top Pick This Month: Yoga Bush Retreat, hosted by Everything Yoga! 5 weeks ago, I attended Everything Yoga’s Yoga Bush Retreat and I am so glad that I made the time to do so! What a truly special experience. Melanie Herbst and Sandra Brits went to such immense effort to create a beautiful, healing space, right down to the little details such as a beautiful name card on top of a colourful blanket on each person’s bed; CONSOL solar jars, fairy lights and candles for a candle lit night time yoga session; beautiful succulents in pots placed all over and a yoga mat for each person. In addition to the beautiful yoga sessions, we were treated to tons of gorgeous healthy food, a highly informative talk on nutrition from Wendy Young of Wise Living, and a rejuvenating sound journey with Vaughan Harris. We were given the space to connect with ourselves and our bodies and minds once more, shaking off the stresses of everyday life and being revitalised. To top it off, we met and connected with beautiful like minded people and felt surrounded by love and joy. If you are in Gauteng, make sure to book on their next retreat. You can thank me later! "Men-o-pause" may be a funny play on words but it's no laughing matter to millions of women. When hot flashes, mood swings and memory changes are affecting your life, you want help fast. But where can you find it when the "newest" science says the old science is wrong -- or even harmful? An understanding of how and why science went astray, plus a simple, strategic plan can get your life back in balance. What Happens During Midlife's Pause? Menopause is nature's way of signalling the end of child-bearing years. When you stop having your periods naturally -- usually when you're around 50 years old -- the slow-down tends to be gradual. But menopause can occur before or after age 50, and it can also be surgically induced. For instance, if you have your ovaries or uterus removed, you'll skip the "peri" part and advance straight to full-blown

menopause. When that happens, symptoms often intensify because there's no gradual downshift: estrogen and progesterone production simply stops. When menopause occurs, the primary symptoms you're likely to experience are:[1] • Hot Flashes • Vaginal Dryness • Menstrual Irregularities (natural) • Depression, Mood Swings • Weight Gain (natural or surgically induced) Conscious Life Magazine

Short and long-term strategies can help you control these symptoms. The best approaches are preventive and involve diet and exercise. That's not surprising because the most obvious manifestations of menopause have emerged in the last 75 years. With a return to what's been natural for centuries, it's possible to minimize even the most frustrating night sweats and weight gain.

Menopause is NOT a Disease As I mentioned, menopause occurs when you stop producing estrogen and progesterone, and your periods cease. So, it seemed sensible to scientists that replacing those hormones would alleviate menopausal symptoms.

surgically induced menopause, as you are menopausal by definition and your FSH will be elevated. The higher your FSH level, the more likely you're in menopause. Peri-menopause begins the process a few years in advance; once you haven't had a period for a year, you're considered post-menopausal. Just a few diet and lifestyle changes can have a dramatic effect on how you experience menopause -- especially if you start making them at the "peri" stage.

Three Sure-fire Strategies to Start 1.

One of the problems with this approach was that it looked at menopause as a disease to be treated with medication, as opposed to another life stage. The other: it turned out that synthetic hormones don't act like the real thing. I'll detail the problems with hormone replacement later, along with information on the "new" science of bio identical hormones. For affordable symptom-relief right now, here are the simplest, heart-healthy ideas, followed by longer-term solutions.

2.

Heart-Healthy, Symptom-Ease We all hope for a quick fix. That's not what healthy lifestyle changes are all about, but for those who want the short-list, here's an easy way to determine if you're in menopause, along with the "to-dos" that put you on the right track fast. First, ask your physician for a blood test called an FSH test. It determines if your pituitary gland thinks your ovaries aren't fully functioning, and as a result, is secreting "follicular stimulating hormone" or FSH. There is no need to do this if you have had a

3.

Phytoestrogens. Taking Phytoestreogens or plant-estrogens before menopause can moderate day-to-day estrogen levels, so that when menopause comes, the drop won't be so dramatic. Weak estrogens that block stronger forms, phtyoestrogens are found in licorice and alfalfa. Royal Maca also seems to be an amazing adaptogenic herbal solution for menopause that has helped many women. Be sure to avoid the inexpensive ones, as they typically don't work. Get the real deal from Peru. Omega-3. Take high quality, animalbased omega-3 fats. A high quality animal-based omega-3 supplement, such as krill oil, can be far more effective and beneficial than fish oil. Balance omega-3 and omega-6 by eating foods rich in these oils. Green tea. Polyphenols are associated with a lowered risk of heart disease, and green tea like Royal Matcha has polyphenols that can be more effective than those in red wine -- plus 17 times the antioxidants of wild blueberries.

One study shows green tea can also reduce the risk of breast cancer in younger women Conscious Life Magazine

under 50, and now, certain polyphenols have been shown to have some HRT-like benefits, without the drawbacks. [2] If you noticed soy isn't on the list, it's because non-fermented soy can damage your health. There are also musts-to-avoid, some of which you may be aware of already. They include refined carbohydrates, sugar, caffeine and alcohol.

What to Follow Up With Once you've covered the three musts to start with, add the following to your lifestage regimen: • Black Cohosh. It may help regulate body temperature and hot flashes. • Locally grown, organic food • Exercise! Start a program that you know you'll do at least 3 times a week, even if it's just 15 minutes a day to start. • Vitamin D. Please review my one-hour video lecture for the latest on this essential vitamin.

“In addition, long-term usage studies revealed many other negative side effects of HRT, including high blood pressure and vaginal bleeding. “

Avoid These DANGEROUS Solutions It has been overwhelmingly proven that conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which science once touted, is in fact, dangerous. The following prescriptions now have black box warnings and need to be avoided: • Premarin. Premarin is an estrogen extracted from Pregnant Mare's Urine. We now know it is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. • Estrogen Therapy. Estrogen, which is extracted from Premarin, was effective in combating some menopausal symptoms but proved to have serious, negative side effects, such as the increased risk of breast cancer and an increase in insulin levels. • Provera. This drug is a progestin or a synthetic form of progesterone, which probably makes it even more toxic than Premarin. Its well-documented, negative side effects include blood clotting. In addition, long-term usage studies revealed many other negative side effects of HRT, including high blood pressure and vaginal bleeding. A year after millions of women quit taking hormone replacement therapy, incidents of breast cancer fell dramatically -by 7 percent! No wonder women now know to avoid dangerous, conventional estrogen replacement.

The "New" Science: Bioidenticals The Smartest Long-Term Solutions If you've developed healthy habits that support your lifestage and invested a little time exploring the web links highlighted here, work on these long-term adjustments next: • Add low-to-moderate intensity and variety to your exercise plan • Optimize your health with my easy Nutrition Plan

Recently, there's been tremendous excitement about Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), which was even discussed on the Oprah show in a television breakthrough. When diet and lifestyle changes are not enough, bioidentical hormones may be able to help. Conscious Life Magazine

However, the FDA has recently attacked BHRT, specifically estriol, effectively banning it. Ironically, the FDA is simultaneously attempting to create natural-substance knockoffs. Here's what's happening: Bioidenticals, unlike synthetic hormones or natural ones from animals, are natural hormones that are bioidentical to your own. The bioidentical that is prescribed 80 percent of the time is estriol. It's natural, not a drug, and you get it at compounding pharmacies. The FDA is trying to require physicians who write prescriptions for it to fill out an Investigational New Drug (IND) application. It's no simple form; it's 40-pages long and expensive to file. And, the FDA admits it's unaware of any adverse effects of bioidentical hormones. The inside scoop: Estriol has been used safely for decades, and I believe it's particularly useful when your ovaries have been removed or you've had a hysterectomy. Dr. Johathan Wright, who I've interviewed many times for my Expert Inner Circle program, is a pioneer in bioidenticals, and you can see what he has to say about their value in this short video. The attack on bioidenticals comes just as the FDA is advancing drugs that are synthetic knock-offs of natural estriol. Talk about an upside down world!

Note on Bioidentical Delivery Methods As for administering bioidentical hormones, you need to know that some delivery methods are clearly superior to others. Oral supplementation is perhaps your worst option, as your liver processes everything in your digestive tract first, before it enters your blood stream. Any method that bypasses your liver will therefore be more effective. Hormone creams are one common alternative

“However, since progesterone is fat soluble, it can build up in your fatty tissues and lead to having too much progesterone in your body. that achieves this. However, since progesterone is fat soluble, it can build up in your fatty tissues and lead to having too much progesterone in your body. This in turn can disrupt other hormones. It's also near impossible to accurately determine the dose when using a cream. Sublingual drops offer the best of both worlds, as it enters your blood stream directly and will not build up in your tissues like the cream can. It's also much easier to determine the dose you're taking, as each drop is about one milligram. So you know exactly how much you're taking. The direct delivery system also means you can oftentimes take a lower dose than you would need if you were taking it in pill form.

Knock-Off Naturals: Don't Be Fooled Natural estriol can't be patented, so there are no huge profits to be made on it. I'm not surprised its availability is being threatened. In fact fake, profit-generating versions of the real thing are mushrooming. Omacor (an FDA-approved, Omega-3 fat fish oil), Trimesta (a knock-off of natural estriol, now Lovaza) and already FDA-approved Prestara, a pharma version of the natural hormone DHEA, will all soon be competing against what you can get cheaper. Some believe these natural knock-offs could even be dangerous.

For instance, Trimesta is taken orally, even though this is known to be a greater risk factor for endometrial cancer than taking hormones transdermally (through the skin). Prestara is taken in doses of 200 mg daily, which is too high for women -- even 50 mg daily may cause women to experience undesirable side effects, including facial hair. To support physicians' rights to freely prescribe bioidenticals and your right to have access to them, go to the Health Freedom Foundation's website. You'll find updated information and a letter you can send to Congress and the President.

One Small Step Toward Lifelong Serenity Menopause is one of those instances where what's easiest and natural is also best. Because prevention is always the smartest medicine, start making changes in your diet and lifestyle during peri-menopause. Sticking to the perimeter supermarket aisles, where vegetables and fruits dominate, puts you on the right path. By the time menopause comes, you'll have developed healthy nutritional habits that you can build on for every life stage. By Dr. Christiane Northrup www.Drnorthrup.com

In Dr. Northrup’s groundbreaking book, The Wisdom of Menopause, there is an entire chapter on herbal approaches to menopause. In addition, there is a section on bioidentical hormones for those women who require them. When the menstrual cycle ends, the body decreases its production of estrogen and progesterone. Consequently, many menopausal women and post-menopausal women need something to replace the loss of natural estrogen. Chemical substitutes can help to alleviate both the psychological and physiological changes that women will experience. Chemical therapies, however, must be concucted

conducted under a physician’s close guidance, and are not without risk. Many women, when faced with the choice of taking this risk, simply try to “tough it out”…certainly not a pleasant alternative!

So…….Is There Another Way? Absolutely! A better and safer solution could be to use Pueraria mirifica, which is a natural plant estrogen found in nature.

Pueraria mirifica contains phytoestrogens that Conscious Life Magazine

that can supplement estrogen insufficiency in the body. Phytoestrogens (meaning plantestrogens), are plant sterols which have a structure that is different from mammalian estrogens, thus creating different effects. They are also known as adaptogens, meaning that they nourish and tonify estrogensensitive tissue.

How Does This Work? The human body contains various types of receptors; one type of receptor is the estrogen receptor which is found on cells throughout the body including the genital tract and even the brain. Estrogen receptors stimulate estrogenic activity and send their respective signals throughout the human body. There are two types—alpha and beta. Mammalian estrogens combine with the alpha receptor and result in cell growth‌..not always a good thing.

Phytoestrogens, on the other hand, combine with the beta estrogen receptors. They thus act as natural SERMS (selective estrogen receptor modulators). They do not promote cell growth but have other estrogenic effects.

What Does This All Mean? When Pueraria mirifica is taken, its potent phytoestrogens circulate throughout the body and get picked up by the estrogen receptors on the surface of the brain, blood vessels, bone, breast, and ovarian cells. The ensuing estrogenic activity helps to restore normal function to the body which may have slowed down due to lack of estrogen. The phytoestrogens found in Pueraria mirifica act as a substitute for the body’s estrogen.

Phytoestrogens are natural, and safe.

Wisdom is knowing the difference between the habitual demands made by the mind and the simple demands of the body.’ Dr H S Kasture During winter the earth’s energy is withdrawn back into herself. It is a time of rest, storing and preparation. Rest from the bounty of the autumnal harvest and preparation for the vitality of the coming spring. This is a time of being grounded, internalised and still. The weather is cold and dry – qualities that aggravate both the ether and air elements within our body/mind. How we live each day is key to optimising our vitality. This awareness of how we need to live to be optimally healthy needs constant adjustment. This is can be challenging because of our routines, commitments, desires and attachments.

Suggested Daily Routine • •

• •

Sleeping late in winter is fine – rise with the sun around 6:30am. Hold some warm sesame oil in your mouth for a few minutes. This sounds strange but it has a wonderfully nourishing effect on the mouth, strengthens the teeth and stops bleeding and receding gums. Massage yourself with warm sesame oil. Sesame oil is energetically warming and can be beneficial to every constitution at this time of year. This can offset the seasonal tendency of cold and aching joints. Rinse the oil off in a hot shower. Drink a cup of warm water to which you can add fresh grated root ginger. This relaxes the digestive system, enkindles the appetite and encourages a healthy bowel movement. Dynamic exercise during the cold months is most beneficial. Enjoy a brisk early morning walk, or vigorous yoga asana and breathing practices. Your winter diet can consist of warm cooked foods that are mildly spicy, slightly

salty and nourishing. The digestive fire is usually stronger in winter as the colder weather constricts the surface of the body and pushes the heat back in to the centre of the digestive system. Breakfast can be a bowl of porridge oats, barley or rice. Add some cinnamon, cloves and honey. Honey is heating and drying which helps to clear mucus. Lunch and supper can be wholesome meals avoiding too many cold, wet and damp foods that are excessively sweet or from the fridge or freezer – root vegetable soups, casseroles and grains. Drink spicy teas throughout the day. Increase your omega oil intake during the cold and dry winter months. Every single cellular function in the body needs quality omega oils (3,6,9). Nuts and seeds, as well as flaxseed oil are good sources of essential fatty acids. After a day of hard work settle in for a relaxing evening. Ayurveda suggests that an occasional glass of warming wine may be beneficial in winter to encourage circulation and stimulate digestion! Then it’s off to bed with a delicious glass of hot spicy milk. Nutmeg is a very calming herb that promotes sound sleep and can be added to your milk.

What a deliciously rejuvenating day! Keep warm and active this Winter, and enjoy the Winter calm. For more information and to book a Nutrition & Wellbeing Coaching, call Wendy on 072 800 4982 or email wendy@wise-living.co.za  Conscious Life Magazine

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a role in maintaining the health of the body’s connective tissue as well as acting as an antioxidant. Your body needs to ingest vitamin C, vitamin C foods, on a daily basis in order to maintain necessary supplies. Your body does not make vitamin C on its own, and it does not store it either, so it is important that you include plenty of fruits and veggies that contain vitamin C in your daily diet. The benefits of vitamin C may include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling. Conscious Life Magazine

Over 100 studies about vitamin C have been conducted over the last 10 years, all revealing an ever-growing list of vitamin C benefits. Because Vitamin C is not a vitamin that your body produces, it is very common to have a Vitamin C Deficiency.

Vitamin C Deficiency Symptoms A deficiency in vitamin C shows itself in several common ways in the body. While the signs and symptoms of Vitamin C deficiency are not too bothersome, the results of longterm low levels of vitamin C are very detrimental and worth making a priority. A severe vitamin C deficiency will result in scurvy, a disease resulting from the breakdown of collagen Scurvy will make you feel fatigued and lethargic. It affects bone and muscle strength and it stifles the immune system. Scurvy is rarely seen today, as only a very small amount of vitamin C is needed to prevent it. Citrus was actually used in the 18th century in order to cure the two million sailors that were suffering from Scurvy. It is important to understand, however, that less noticeable signs of Vitamin C are still very serious such as: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Easy bruising Swollen gums Bleeding gums Slow wound healing Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) Dry and splitting hair Dry red spots on the skin Rough, dry, scaly skin Nosebleeds Weakened immune system Digestive disorders like leaky gut and autoimmune disease Possible weight gain because of slowed metabolism Swollen and painful joints

“Health problems related to a vitamin C deficiency can get much worse over time, and may lead to some serious health issues.” Health problems related to a vitamin C deficiency can get much worse over time, and may lead to some serious health issues. Long Term Problems from Low Levels of Vitamin C include: • • • • •

High blood pressure Gallbladder disease Stroke Certain cancers Atherosclerosis

To get the most nutrition and Vitamin C from your fruits and veggies, there are a few easy tips to follow: eat real foods that are uncooked and raw, make an effort to eat your fruits and vegetables soon after cutting them up, and steam fruits and veggies, instead of boiling them. As I always say, eating organic, raw fresh foods is your best possible source of nutrition. Food in its natural state will provide your body with the most abundant source of nutrition, so even though many people choose to turn to supplements when looking to get more vitamins into their bodies, I want to emphasize that the best source of any vitamin, mineral, or nutrient is fresh, raw food sources.

Top Food Sources of Vitamin C: Try to consume 2-3 of these vitamin C foods sources daily; this will help you maintain optimal levels of vitamin C. Many of these foods are included in my recommended healing diet due to their high antioxidant content and numerous health benefits. See table overleaf: Conscious Life Magazine

9 Health Benefits of Vitamin C 1. Promotes Healthy Skin and Collagen Formation A major study that involved over 4,000 women aged 40-74 found that higher vitamin C intakes can lower the likelihood of a wrinkled appearance, dryness of the skin, and can help to naturally slow aging.(1) Vitamin C is used to form an important protein used to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. It helps to heal your wound and it form scar tissue. There is even some evidence that using vitamin C skin cream can decrease the amount and duration of skin redness following cosmetic skin procedures like wrinkle or scar removal. Maintaining healthy skin through a diet high in antioxidants is one important way to prevent skin cancer. 2. Improves Mineral Absorption For your body to receive the nutrients it needs to function properly, your digestive system must first take these nutrients from the food that you eat, or the supplements that you take, and then absorb them into your bloodstream. Then your cells absorb these vitamins and nutrients and they help your body to in turn reduce inflammation and the development of disease. Taking vitamin C along with iron can increase how much iron the body absorbs in adults and children. 3. Lowers Risk of Gout Vitamin C is associated with lowering the risk of gout, which is Gout is a painful, arthritis type condition mainly afflicting the big toe. The big toe becomes stiff, inflamed and painful as a result of excess uric acid leading to crystals formed in joints. In a long-term study of males over the age of 40, who took between 1,000 and 1,499 mg of vitamin C per day, their risk of gout was reduced by 31%. Participants who took over

1,500 mg of vitamin C per day have almost half the risk of getting gout. This is comparedto those who did not take supplements. 4. Fights Free Radical Damage Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants that can protect against damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals, as well as toxic chemicals and pollutants like cigarette smoke. Free radicals can build up in the body and contribute to the development of health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and arthritis. Free radicals are made when your body breaks down food or when you are exposed to smoke, tobacco, or radiation. 5. Fights off Colds and Flu It has long been understood that vitamin C benefits your immune system and plays a large role in your body’s ability to fight off colds and viruses. You can take 1000 mg of Vitamin C to fight off an oncoming cold and 4000 mg per day to get rid of a cold that is already in your system. There is also good evidence that taking vitamin C for colds and flu can reduce the risk of developing further complications, like pneumonia and lung infections. 6. Improves Stressed Immune System A recent analysis showed that vitamin C is beneficial to individuals whose immune system has been weakened due to stress. Considering that stress has become a common condition in our society, a sufficient intake of vitamin C can serve as an ideal tool for one’s overall health. 7. Helps Cancer Treatment A high dose of vitamin C can enhance the cancer-fighting effect of drugs used in chemotherapy. Vitamin C has also been found to target only the cells that are in need of these nutriments, unlike other drugs that can harm normal cells as well. Researchers believe Conscious Life Magazine

that vitamin C can be a safe and cost-effective cancer remedy and treatment for ovarian and lung cancer as well.

8. Lowers Risk of Stroke One study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people with the highest concentrations of vitamin C in their blood had a 42% lower stroke risk than those with the lowest concentrations. Because people who eat fruits and veggies have higher blood levels of vitamin C, strive to increase the amount of fruits and veggies that you consume in one day. 9. Improves Physical Performance Eating more vitamin C as part of your diet might improve your physical performance and muscle strength; this is especially true in older people. Taking vitamin C supplements can improve your oxygen intake during exercises and some studies have shown that it can reduce your blood pressure. Using vitamin C before heavy physical exercise, such as a marathon, might prevent upper respiratory infections that sometimes follow exercise of this kind. Vitamin C can also improve the function of your lungs and airways. It has been found that vitamin C doses of 1,000 to 2,000 mg per day may reduce the production of histamines, which contributes to inflammation in asthmatic people, and can therefore help to improve asthma symptoms.

Recommended Daily Intake of Vitamin C As I’ve said, the best source for vitamin C is from fruits and vegetables that are grown locally and organically. If you must supplement, be certain that the supplements you choose are high quality, bioavailable, and free of additives, fillers, and other synthetic ingredients that will harm you in the long run. Conscious Life Magazine

Keep in mind that some cereals and other food beverages are fortified with vitamin C, which means that a vitamin or mineral has been added into the food. Make sure you check the product labels to see just how much vitamin C is in the product. Cooking vitamin C foods, like broccoli or peppers, can reduce the vitamin C content; storing these foods, microwaving and steaming them may also cause a reduction of vitamin C levels. The best sources of vitamin C are uncooked or raw fruits and vegetables. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (or RDA) for vitamins reflects how much of each vitamin most people should get each day. The RDA for vitamin C (measured in milligrams per day) is as follows: For infants: • 0 – 6 months: 40 mg/day • 7 – 12 months: 50 mg/day For children: • 1 – 3 years: 15 mg/day • 4 – 8 years: 25 mg/day • 9-13 years: 45 mg/day For adolescents: • Girls 14 – 18 years: 65 mg/day • Pregnant teens: 80 mg/day • Breastfeeding teens: 115 mg/day • Boys 14 – 18 years: 75 mg/day For adults: • Men age 19 and older: 90 mg/day • Women age 19 years and older: 75 mg/day • Pregnant women: 85 mg/day • Breastfeeding women: 120 mg/day • Smokers, or those who are exposed to secondhand smoke, should increase their daily amount of vitamin C by 35 mg/day

Vitamin C Side Effects Vitamin C is not stored in the body (excess amounts are excreted), so overdose is not a concern. Your body will get rid of excess vitamin C in your urine, it’s actually very smart

about what it needs and doesn’t need. It is still important not to exceed the safe upper limit of 2,000 milligrams a day to avoid stomach upset and diarrhea. A recent study found a link between taking vitamin C supplements and kidney stones. The study found that men who take vitamin C supplements are twice as likely to develop kidney stones as men who don’t take any dietary supplements. These results do not apply to men who get their vitamin C from eating fruits and vegetables, and women were not studied.(2)

Vitamin C Interactions Water-soluble vitamins must be continuously supplied in the diet to maintain healthy levels. Eat vitamin-C-rich fruits and vegetables raw, or cook them with minimal water so you don’t lose some of the water-soluble vitamin in the cooking water.

Aluminum interacts with vitamin C because vitamin C can increase how much aluminum the body absorbs, so take vitamin C two hours before or four hours after you have any antacids. Vitamin C might decrease how quickly the body gets rid of estrogens. Taking vitamin C along with estrogens might increase the effects and side effects of estrogens. Because vitamin C is an antioxidant, there are some concerns that it may decrease the effectiveness of some medications used for cancer. Taking large doses of vitamin C may also reduce how much of some medications used for HIV/AIDS stays in the body. This includes medications such as Agenerase, Viracept, Norvir, and Fortovase. Large amounts of vitamin C may decrease the effectiveness of warfarin (Coumadin) because it is used to slow blood clotting. https://draxe.com/vitamin-c-foods/

Green Monday’s Marvellous Mushroom And Chicken-style Pie Serves 10

Conscious Life Magazine

Ingredients: • 1.5 litres unsweetened soy milk • 160 grams cake flour • 150 milliliters oil • 10 grams corn flour • 2 grams nutmeg • 1 gram cayenne pepper • 1 teaspoon salt • 40 milliliters lemon juice • 10 grams vegetable stock powder • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 1/2 green pepper, chopped • 500 grams mushrooms, sliced • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic • 2 boxes Fry's Chicken-style strips • Oil for frying • 1 can white asparagus • 20 grams fresh parsley, chopped • 1 roll (400 grams) puff pastry

Directions: • Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius. • Let the puff pastry defront while you make the filling ingredients. • To make the white sauce, blend (or whisk) together 1/2 liters of unsweetened soy milk, flour, corn flour and oil in the processor. • Place in a pot and whisk until it becomes thick and creamy. Add nutmeg and cayenne pepper and 1 teaspoon of salt. Slowly add the rest of the milk while whisking until you have a thick and creamy white sauce. Add lemon juice and stir. • Dissolve the vegetable stock powder in a little bit of water and add to white sauce, continue to stir until cooked through, then switch off the heat. • In a pan, fry the chopped onions and green pepper in oil for 2 minutes. Add to white sauce. • In the same pan, fry mushrooms in oil with

garlic and sprinkle of salt. Then add to white sauce. • In the same pan, fry the Chicken-style strips in oil. Make sure to fry the strips separately and not with the other veg to ensure they become crispy. If the strips are still frozen, add them to the pan without oil first to cook off the water, so that the oil and water don’t mix. Once crispy, take the strips off the heat and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cut the pieces in bite-size pieces, and add to white sauce. • Cut asparagus pieces into 2cm strips. If already cut, add as is. Add the asparagus with its liquid, and the fresh parsley to the sauce and stir. • Turn the heat up again and stir through all the filling ingredients. • Test the sauce: it should be thick and creamy and move around slowly when you tilt the pan. If you feel the sauce is too thin, dissolve a tablespoon of corn flour in water and add to the sauce, put the pan on the heat again and mix the corn flour until cooked through. If you feel the mixture is too thick, however, put the pan on the heat again and add a little bit of soy milk gradually until it reaches the right consistency. • When your sauce is ready and mixed through with all the ingredients, place mixture into a deep serving dish. • Roll out defrosted puff pastry and place over mixture. If the pastry overlaps a bit, fold it back onto the pastry to make a thicker crust. Brush a bit of oil over the surface. • Bake in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius until the pie is golden brown.

The planet is in danger of being destroyed by our greatest threat, ourselves!!!! It’s up to all of us to ensure we do not destroy the environment in which we live and the future environment in which our children will live. Recycling is as simple as separating home waste and educating our children to do the same. If we all take this step, it will make a huge difference to our environment and ensure that the various recyclables are recycled and disposed of in the correct manner or sent to the correct facilities for re-use. Recycling is a great way to save our natural resources and even generate energy. Article by Hanna Kok of thelife-youwant.com Are you fed up hearing about global warming, polluted oceans, human trafficking, drug lords and the other wrongs of the world? Wouldn't it be great to have a beautiful planet without all of that? Wouldn't it be great if we could just cut this out of our lives? We all know this is not going to happen. Then how can we use these negative people to clean-up our environment? Is this really possible? Yes! Yes! Yes! The state of our planet is a reflection of the collective consciousness of human-kind, or should I say human-unkind. The humanunkind race is filled with greed, addictions, apathy and all other horrible qualities we can think of. But the truth is that we have (some of) these parts in us too. They are part of our shadow side as Caroline Myss and Andrew Harvey speak about in the Shadow Course. You can watch these free videos. https://www.soundstrue.com/store/shadowcourse/sacred-path.

We cannot get those negative people to change, but we can use these negative people to heal ourselves and our environment. We can start with acknowledging that we have these dark tendencies and instead of pretending they are not there. Pretending they are not there, doesn't change our and the collective consciousness. When we bring light to our shadow, we heal ourselves and the environment! And the wonderful bonus is that we become happier and more successful!

Here are examples of how to use negative people to clean-up the environment. Example 1 - Someone is not pulling her weight I am a member of a few committees. In one of the committees, we were discussing how one of our colleagues was not sending us important documents. Conscious Life Magazine

We have been trying for a very long time to get her to comply. During the meeting I got all the committee members to apply the three fingers pointing back. We all identified what we saw in this lady, we recognised how we did the same, and we made the plan on how we were going to change ourselves. The very next morning we received some of the documents and soon more followed. We are now all pulling our weight. We resolved the issue by changing ourselves. This person who we experienced as irritating, has helped us to run the organisation better. This incident demonstrated to all committee members the power of the three fingers pointing back. Hopefully they will use it more in other areas in their lives too. Example 2 - Politicians are making bad policies. I live in South Africa and we have many racial issues. When I look at most of the politicians, I see they are constantly looking backwards. They are looking at how bad things were in the past and use that as a justification for their current choices. I don't believe their current choices are going to be good for our country at all, so these politicians irritate me. Again, I used my favourite technique of the three fingers pointing back. I looked at where am I looking back on my pain in the past and let that pain determine my current choices and actions? I realise I do it all the time. I look back on my many of my unsuccessful ventures and some experiences of betrayal and I use these to justify why I am holding back now. My pretended advice to the politicians is, "Look forward focus on what you want to achieve. Let's focus on what is working and use those as examples for change. Let's let go of the hurt of the past! We are not the same people we were in the past.“ This is what I am doing now. I am moving

forward with joy and keep focusing on where I am going. Example 3 - A snoring husband My husband snores. He would keep me awake and I would get more and more irritated. Off course I never snore, right, so in order to apply the three fingers pointing back, I looked at what snoring symbolises to me. Snoring for me is that my head is filled with noise that keeps me awake. The next question is "Where do I fill my head with stuff that keeps me awake?" I realised that I keep myself awake with noisy thoughts of self-doubt and worry about things I have no control over." My pretended advice to my husband would be "Please keep quiet or make soothing sounds" We know he has no control over that while he is sleeping, but I know now that I had to empty my mind or focus on things that bring me love joy and peace. As soon as I did that, he stopped snoring. The next day something amazing happened. When I went to bed he was snoring badly. As soon as I got into bed, he stopped. He still snores occasionally, but it doesn't worry me, because I now focus on creating inner-peace and I fall asleep. My snoring husband has helped me to create a peaceful inner-environment My inner-peace, can be used to create innerpeace in others.

In conclusion Instead of quickly booting out all the draining, negative and irritating people. I suggest that we use them to identify our shadow side, so that we can change ourselves. This contributes to changing the collective consciousness from human-unkind to humankind. When the collective consciousness changes, the environment will change too. This is how we can use the negative people to clean-up our environment. Conscious Life Magazine

What is Reiki?

Article from the Reiki Association, Southern Africa Discovered in Japan, Reiki is a gentle and non-invasive ancient natural healing therapy which does not cause pain or harm. Current Reiki practice can be traced to the spiritual teachings of Mikao Usui who rediscovered this ancient art in of healing in Japan in the early 20th century. Reiki is derived from two Japanese words REI, or universal transcendental spirit, and Ki, life energy also known as prana. When this energy is abundant and flowing freely we experience health, vitality and a sense of well-being. When the energy stream is blocked or depleted we are susceptible to stress, depression, illness and dis-ease. Simple but profound, Reiki, is the input of pure energy, enabling you to bring your energy field into alignment; creating balance and harmony and subsequent improved health, coupled with a sense of physical well-being. Independent research by Dr.Robert Becker and Dr. John Zimmerman during the 1980′s investigated what happens in a Reiki session. Their finding were that not only the brain wave patterns of practitioner and receiver become synchronized in the alpha state, characteristic of meditation and relaxation, but also they pulse in unison with the Earth’s magnetic field, known as the Schuman Resonance. During these moments, the biomagnetic field of the practitioner’s hand as at least 1000 times greater than normal, and not as a result of internal body current.

Zimmerman (1990) in the USA;(1992) in Japan further investigated the large pulsating bio magnetic field that is emitted from the hands of energy healers while they work. They discovered that the pulses are in the same frequencies as brain waves, focusing mostly in alpha state. Independent medical research has shown that this range of frequencies will stimulate healing in the body, with specific frequencies being suitable for different tissues. According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, which included a comprehensive survey of Alternative Modality use by Americans, more than 1.2 million adults had used an energy healing therapy, such as Reiki, in the previous year. The survey also found that approximately 161,000 children had used an energy healing therapy in the previous year. South African’s have also embraced this modality and Reiki is offered Conscious Life Magazine

Have you heard that we now have the potential to anchor a new 5th dimensional reality into our body and our lives? To explain this a little fuller, let I have a strong sense that we are at a pivotal point in time. A time where it is all about choice. We can choose right here and right now what energy to play in, and to be in for the future. If we get sucked into the chaos, and dramas around us – believing it and buying the fear that is being instigated – then we are still stuck in the 3rd dimensional energy. If you are able to view it all as just an interesting point of view… and just be aware of what others are choosing… WITHOUT getting hooked into the energy and fear of the future – then you are playing with 5th dimensional energy. In the heavier 3rd dimension everything seems to be a struggle. You will find more aggression around you and maybe even directed towards you. Life is difficult, your health and relationships take strain and your job or finances are an issue that may need addressing and attention.

In the lighter higher vibration of the 5th… everything is easier. So in every moment be aware if you are stuck in the 3rd or happily enjoying the 5th dimension. Remember we all have free will – and it is our choice. What I have noticed since connecting the heart with the head – together with seeing and hearing overlaying patterns of light and sound (see the last newsletter for a reminder of this), is that this month has flowed in all ways. When I have needed time and space to catch up with my backlog – it has been there – with no stress about finances, because those Conscious Life Magazine

have flowed easily from other sources. The filling of my courses, and sales of products have exponentialized, leaving me more time to play, to practice the processes and to experience this awesome new way of being. The clients that I have seen this month have ALL experienced massive shifts and clearings and many have shared their astounding experiences with me – and trust me … we can all do this… So… what is the next step. The next step is to clear your space. Do this in your office, your therapy room, or any space in your home where you spend a lot of time. Clear the clutter, make it a truly beautiful and sacred space. My sacred alter (see the pic) includes the very first drawing I ever did, together with some of my Infinity Keys (I chose them carefully for the energy I would like to invite), a clock (because I work with Time in the Antaneea treatment) and crystals (because they enhance and amplify everything) Then anchor your head, your heart AND spirit into your space. To do this, choose 3 items that would represent each of those 3 aspects. It could be 3 divine candles, or 1 candle with 3 wicks. It could be crystals, or my oils and sprays. Pictures, images or symbols – whatever works for you. They must each mean something to you, and each one would represent the head, the heart and your higher self.

Do whatever works for you… and in this way we begin to entrain the room with the trinity – and this will help to anchor us in the 5th dimension. Awaken and open all 3 aspects in every moment – and with practice it will begin to become second nature…. and then magic happens. And now for the crux of it… when faced with any decisions – whether it is guiding someone else; or needing help yourself ask your head what it would do in this situation, then ask the heart and finally the higher self – and make your choice with whichever feels the lightest. You will notice that it becomes easier with practice and you will find it easier not to get sucked into the chaos around us. You will be increasing the amount of light in your being – which affects your surroundings, your ability to create and manifest and even spreading the light to people around you – wherever you are. Be kind to yourself and invite magic – it is yours for the asking. Penni www.divinespace.co.za

Here is what I have used: (Pictured on the right) My Heart chakra candle – for the heart, the Indigo Light Matrix oil to represent the mind, and the Crown chakra candle for spirit. In the morning I light the candles, and anoint my head with the oil to remind myself to awaken all 3, and then each time I look at them I connect with all and visualize each one fully open and connected to each other. This is my choice – what is yours? Conscious Life Magazine

REIKI A quantity that is almost impossible to define! Energy can never be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another. Among the familiar forms are heat energy, energy of motion, electrical energy, and sound energy. Reiki is a form of energy healing. This form of healing helps to maintain balance within, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Reiki is a form or spiritual or energy healing. It helps open up and remove blockages

The general condition of your pet’s skin and coat are good indicators of its health. A healthy animal will not shed excessively and will have a shiny coat that is free from dandruff or greasiness. The coat should be shiny and smooth, not brittle or coarse. Healthy skin should be supple and clear without bumps, flakes and grease. Health and nutrition influence the lustre and texture of your pet's coat from the inside, and regular grooming and skin care on the outside will help keep your pet's coat clean and tangle free. Illness and stress? Itchy, scratchy, flaky, bald patches, oozing sores, warts, allergies‌ are but a few skin conditions that can affect our furry friends. Before reaching for the bottle of shampoo, think about whether that lacklustre coat could be telling you something else. If you have any concerns, contact your veterinarian for a consultation. Dogs in particular have huge problems in relation to skin disease, but cats, horses, birds etc. also suffer from various skin conditions. At a loss as to how to assist your pet with

his/her skin problem? Here are some guidelines as to how various skin conditions can be treated naturally. All these products are liquids, taken orally, AND easy to administer. We take care of many feral cats, and it is definitely not possible to administer their medicine directly. We therefore place it in their drinking water or mix it with food, and still continue to see great results.

Nutrition When last did you read the label on the pet food you buy? Some dogs have allergies to colorants, and other additives in dog food; and this includes the expensive brands. Many have specific allergies to gluten, in particular, which is found in many grains used in the commercial pet food. Breeds such as Staffies and Bull terriers have such a fine skin with Conscious Life Magazine

very little hair to offer them as protection against external irritants including grasses, shampoos and the sun, that they are more seriously affected than many other breeds. Many cats and dogs are chronically affected. We have a ‘natural approach” to dealing with health issues problems and have found that most skin conditions can be dealt with effectively without reverting to antibiotics and cortisone. Corticosteroid drugs — including cortisone, hydrocortisone and prednisone — are used for a treating a wide array of problems, but these drugs also carry a risk of serious side effects. ECO-EARS is designed for the treatment of irritated or infected ears, including those badly inflamed ears with strong smelling discharges. Ear disease may be considered as locally significant eczema, and is often prescribed along with one of the other natural “skin products”. Individual animals may still require regular ear cleaning with a preparation that does not contain antibiotics or steroids. In some individuals a very runny oil such as extravirgin olive oil can be a success. Even strong, cooled to room temperature, rooibos can be helpful. Fill the ear canal to the brim then plug gently with a wad of cotton wool. Massage the ears well for at least five minutes, but be certain to run away after pulling out the plug, and stay away until he

has stopped shaking his head or you most certainly will be bathed in olive oil or rooibos tea. It is a bit messy yes! But it can be helpful on a weekly basis. ECO-HAIR is a skin detoxifier as well as a skin conditioner, and is particularly useful where the skin is of poor quality (dandruff, broken hairs or thin or pigmented skin or hair loss/bald patches). The animal generally has an unkempt look, and scratching is also a possibility. This product can have a significant anti-tumor effect on many warts and small, slow growing skin tumors. This is also a great product to use to maintain your pet’s skin and coat in great condition. As we are moving into winter with the accompanying dry winter conditions, especially in the highveld, your best friend may need a little extra help to stay glamorous. ECO-SCRATCH is now for the really scratchy animal where the skin is inflamed and the scratching is incessant. This is very often a Conscious Life Magazine

seasonal allergy, often related to grass or pollen, particularly after the first seasonal rains, and may be used in conjunction with Eco-Allergy. ECO-ECZEMA This is a medicine to assist those animals that are affected by a wet eczema. Often there are hot spots; there may be a sudden moist eruption on the skin, often with an unpleasant smell. This medicine also applies to those chronic eczemas of the feet, again particularly in the Bullies. ECO-IMMUNE If we accept that many animals are affected by skin and other problems as a result of a depressed immune system then this is the perfect vehicle for assisting with the other medicines in the re-establishment of a healthy skin. ECO-VET COLOSTRUM SUPPLEMENTS A unique product with a multi vitamin approach to ensure that the skin receives adequate nourishment. Colostrum is the very first food of life, an amazing substance with an ability to protect and even to rejuvenate. ECO-FEM and ECO-HIM offer natural hormone replacement therapy for spayed & neutered animals where we often, particularly in the cat see much in the way of related skin disorders. These animals will exhibit the classic signs of a requirement for Hormone Replacement Therapy: • Aging faster than expected • A general slowing down • Overweight • Thin skin with hair loss and very poor quality hair. • Both products are also very effective in treating incontinence Shower them with affection and love naturally.

The Antbear Drakensberg Lodge is a thatched, whitewashed lodge built high on a natural platform overlooking the Bushman's River and Giants Castle. Antbear Drakensberg Lodge offers various Drakensberg accommodation options in en suite double rooms, luxury suites, family units and also boasts a luxury cave too. Antbear Drakensberg Lodge is one of those smaller intimate kind places which has been lovingly put together. The natural setting of the accommodation is stunning and we have managed to encase all this beauty with an atmosphere of comfort and ease. The cottages are smartly appointed and individually designed and the fact that we are a small place makes for an intimate and personal accommodation experience. Each of the accommodation units are different and are decorated with uniquely eccentric and artistic wooden furniture. It is a bit off the beaten track and is more of an insider tip than just another bed and breakfast. We cater for small intimate groups and never have more than 45 guests at a time. It's a laid back, lovingly cared for kind of place where you feel a sense of happiness and peace. Honeymoon stays turn into anniversary commemorations just as guests become friends. Even foreign tourists return for a second and third taste.

Because food is an important part of your stay Meals are part of the real surprises that the Antbear Lodge has to offer where home grown cooking is part of the deal. We like to use our own home grown organic vegetables and if we haven’t got, then we lean heavily on those local providers with similar attitudes to our own. Conny and Andrew both like cooking and are up to changing just about anything to suit tastes or philosophies. Our cooking experience is in part a journal, a record of events and memories expressed in recipes. In the course of our travels we have filed away many recipes and with them images of people and places and their lives. How food tastes has much to do with the associations we make and if you would like to hear the tales of our meals we would love to tell them.

Sustainable & responsible tourism is our social responsibility and what we do to give something back to our community and environment We believe in sustainable tourism and social responsibility. We live is a spectacularly beautiful place called the Drakensberg and our standard of living here is exceptional. But around us lie contrasts of poverty and lack of development. If we are to keep our way of life then it surely follows that we must do everything in our power to contribute to the upliftment and prosperity of this rural area. We believe that the future of South Africa is linked to the prosperity of the people, and that upliftment is linked to education. And as such we have chosen to support our local primary school called Vulakani Primary School.

Pet friendly accommodation Drakensberg One of the few pet-friendly places in the Drakensberg. Beautiful, vast views of the Drakensberg with plenty of ground for my dogs to roam. Walk for hours. Your dogs will be happy with lots of dams to swim in and horses to discover. One of the accommodation units at Antbear Lodge is fenced in so its really easy to leave your dog behind if you would like to explore some of the sights where pets are not that welcome. If country life is for you and you would love to take your pet with you then Antbear Lodge is a great accommodation choice. Your hosts will advise you on all the activities available. Antbear Lodge prides itself on being both family-friendly and petfriendly.

Help us Fight the Dog Meat Trade URGENT: Our Animal Rescue Team has identified a dog meat farm in South Korea where more than 170 dogs are in desperate need of help. Please make an urgent donation to help us rescue these dogs and save them from a brutal death. Stolen from the streets, shoved into trucks, locked in cages. Then slaughtered and sold to be eaten. This is the horrifying fate of the millions of dogs caught up in Asia’s dog meat trade. Please join the fight to shut down this brutal industry for good. With your help, we’ll shut down farms in South Korea, assist farmers as they transition to more humane livelihoods, support our local Chinese partners in intercepting dog meat traders’ trucks, fund the care of confiscated and rescued animals and lobby for better laws throughout Asia.

You can help stop this cruelty. Please give today.

Act Now Please fill out the form (link) to add your name to the petition calling for vital legal protection for cats and dogs in South Korea. Conscious Life Magazine

Help us bring hope to girls without and choices to those with none. Founded in 2000 by Khanyisile Motsa, and run under her diligent care ever, Home of Hope for Girls is an autonomous, self-started initiative to provide real care for exploited, trafficked and abused children in the city of Johannesburg. It is more than just a residential shelter; it is a loving home where dignity is restored, the past is healed and the girls are given the tools to take control of their futures. Home of Hope also reaches out to the community offering the most vulnerable members support, practical help and a lifeline.

The Background to Home of Hope An estimated 10,000 children are prostitutes in Johannesburg and this figure is increasing. When Khanyisile Motsa relocated to Hillbrow she was shocked to observe girls as young as nine working as prostitutes and selling drugs on the streets at night. The truth about these forgotten children is: • • • • • •

Child Prostitute. Photo by Tseliso Monaheng

Criminals pay agents to recruit children They usually target often orphans or/and those from very disadvantaged rural communities Victims are trafficked or seduced to leave with lies about a life in the city Their IDs are frequently taken from them to make escape and identification difficult Their IDs are often sold on the black market ‘Owned’ by their exploiters they are prostituted, abused, made to sell drugs

PAWS R US (SA) is looking for INVESTORS – help us BUILD THE DREAM of our “HAPPY PLACE”! After 6 years in animal welfare/rescue, PAWS R US (SA) has moved into the LINBER KENNELS facility out in the Tarlton area, JHB. It is time to spread our wings, create a permanent home, and contribute more effectively to both the cause and effects linked to animal welfare/rescue in SA.

Our dream is to build the LINBER KENNELS facility into a top-notch rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming haven for rescue dogs. We also want to establish a home-base for our EDUCATION campaigns, so that we can work with the youth in returning to the core value of COMPASSION and RESPECT for Self and All Life. To make this dream a reality, we need to BUY the LINBER KENNELS site. And to get that done, we need to find INVESTORS and PARTNERS who want to contribute to something greater than themselves, and help make a real, immediate and practical difference in a world that has lost its way.

The PAWS R US (SA) TRUST has been created as a legal entity – and we now look to spread the net open wide and “go on the hunt” for kindred spirits who want to help build something GOOD. We need INVESTORS of the HEART and MIND – those who want to protect the vulnerable, educate the youth of tomorrow, and know that their investment has directly uplifted lives and communities. CONTACT: For all enquiries and details related to this search for INVESTORS, and the implications for each INVESTOR within the Trust, please email us on woof@pawsrus.co.za
