Working with the Angels How can we use Angels in our everyday lives? Angels are simple to work with. There is nothing complicated about using them in our lives everyday. Each and every one of us is able to connect to the Angels, no matter what our age, colour or creed. As long as we are working with and from integrity, and with a purity of heart, they will make our lives and the lives of those around us rich in love and abundance. The law of the Universe states, that Angels may not help us unless we ask. We need to ask with gratitude and in a positive way. If it is for our highest good and the highest good of those around us, we will be helped. There is no limit to the number of times that we can ask for help, and we can ask for the most mundane to the most complicated things. The only time an Angel will step in without being asked, is if we are in a death situation, and it is not our chosen time to die. I run workshops on a regular basis, all over the country, where I teach people to connect to and use their angels. It is so gratifying to see how they grow spiritually, by incorporating the Angels into everything they do.

What is meant by living in the light? As we become connected to our spirituality, we start to live in the light. Imagine a candle burning in the darkness. That little light can be seen from a great distance. So, the brighter our light shines, the more it attracts the darkness. The darkness allows us to see the light. If there was only light, we wouldn’t be able to see the candle burning. We need the contrast to see the light, but that doesn’t mean we have to have the darkness in our space. Spiritual knowledge, allows us to be in the light. Being in the darkness, literally means having no knowledge. We should be doing grounding and protection every day, morning and evening. We also need to be reading, studying and researching to improve our knowledge. In that way, we continue to grow.

How important is Africa in this Spiritual awakening? Africa is a very special place to be living in right now. As light workers, we have chosen to incarnate here at this specific time, because there is so much work to be done. Africa needs healing and we need to take the light from the Southern most tip, right up to the Northern tip. To do this, we need teachers who will help awaken the light in others. I am the Principal and Master Teacher Trainer for The Angel Connection School in Africa. If you are interested in becoming a teacher, click here for further information.

Do you find yourself always in a hurry or being rushed? Are you always running late or not feeling in control of the clock? Because we live in this fast-paced world, we tend to always be running around. Constantly, we are fighting the clock and not finding the time to get where we need to be or get all the things we need done, done. With most everything in life, remember to take a step back and reflect on your routine. Find the reasons why you’re always in a rush. If you allow yourself to, or tell yourself that you have all the time in the world, you’ll find that everything just falls into place. You have complete control over your life. No other factors make choices for you. If you’re feeling rushed, you’re choosing to not give yourself enough time and time speeds up. Time is exactly what you make it to be. All you have to do is believe that you have enough time to do the things you want to do. Trust me, the time will suddenly appear. We complain that we’re stuck to a strict schedule, but by who? We’re at the whim of others’ needs. Our tendencies lean toward blaming others.

Allow yourself to take control of your life and choices. Don’t let time control you. You have all the time in the world dear ones. Try prioritizing your day by making a list the night before of the things you feel are most important to do. You’ll find that nothing takes as long as it seems to take. This can free up your time, so you’re not rushed the next day. Start by pinpointing what you focus on the most. How much mental energy do you use rushing around over that task? Is it work? Money? If you’re spending too much time working and running around, maybe you feel rushed because you have no balance in your life. If you have a busy day, try prepping the night before. Pack a healthy lunch. Pack your exercise clothes to go take a nice walk or jog on your lunch. It is just as important to sleep 8 hours as it is to work 8-plus hours. It is just as important to eat healthy food as it is to run errands constantly. If you make the time to rest your body and treat it right, you’ll perform better. Your work performance will increase and you won’t feel like you’re working all day long. Your list can consist of: paying the bills, exercise, meditate, work, and spend time with loved ones among other things. Once we do things that are right for our body and minds, we have all the time in the world. We exhaust ourselves on things that don’t matter or aren’t good for us, so we don’t end up having time for the things that are good for us. Managing and gaining control of your time will allow you to do the stuff you love and feel accomplished at the same time. You have as much time as you give yourself. Take a moment to smell the flowers and don’t rush through your life. Many of our stresses stem from judging ourselves and setting physical and material goals, instead of loving ourselves completely and unconditionally. When you love yourself and let life love you, you live in richness and fullness. When you accept all of yourself, you become whole and healed. Let’s affirm: I create my own security by trusting the process of life. Love,

Going to the Heart These things you know. 1. There has been much cleansing to do and it is becoming clear to you that most of it is done and just old habits of mind (errored belief of who you are not) repeating as they come up to leave, until you simply watch and let go. 2. More and more people are Awakening and drawing their lines in the sand, clearly delineating what is acceptable and unacceptable personally so that they are no longer susceptible to too much input from the external psychobabble World around them. 3. Your personal well-being matters to you and you are each doing all that you can, to ensure that you have a peaceful Sanctuary where you can go to recharge and rejuvenate.

4. As conduits of the higher energies (greater self Knowing), much energy replacement and transfer needs to take place within your physical bodies. Always listen to the signals your body is giving you and follow its direction. 5. The Practice of the attitude of gratitude, helps you so much during these intensely changing times, for the thoughts put out into the Universe is what the Universe will give back to you in your Now. In the thank you, thank you is your immediate connection to Source. 6. Mind, the thoughts and the words you consciously choose to have is a major key to creating the World you desire to live in. What you constantly dwell on in your thoughts will manifest as experience in your daily life in one form or another in order to meet the requirements of your creation. 7. Follow the promptings of your heart, because it is the heart Centre that is the most powerful and active of all the places in your four densest bodies at this time of change.

8. The force of Love you are gathers momentum to create miracles of transformation within your body at all levels of your Being. 9. The ups and downs you have been experiencing within your emotions is an indication that your Heart is becoming wide open and this increases the feeling of vulnerability within you, for you have learned to protect your hearts in order to shield it from the pain of rejection, betrayal, sadness, deception and separation. You are now being required to drop all boundaries, all protection, all walls, and veils. 10. Your task is to move beyond all fear and let your true inner Self become manifest through you as you go about your daily life, and Trust that you are always surrounded with Love, protection and guidance in all facets of your life. 11. You are to step out and share the gift of you wherever and whenever you can, Your integration, your connection and Your Light is what Gaia and Humanity require to become Whole in this next Great Evolutionary Leap WE are Creating.

Remember we are all in this together and when you go down there are always others of us right beside you who are up and holding the space for you to gently rise again. So reach out and ask when it is necessary. 100,000 hands are here, yours being two of them. Shine On I So Love You

With love and gratitude for sharing – Nicky Hamid

By Hermann Keppler for CNH (The College of Natural Health, South Africa)

Toxins in vaccinations, medication, our environment and diet can compromise a child’s immune system and his or her mental and cognitive status. Many parents feel the need to boost their children’s health through vaccines or a range of supplements as a preventative measure. As a natural health practitioner, however, my advice is firstly to look at every area of a child’s life and how to improve it naturally, and save appropriate supplementation for addressing specific issues. The best life for a child’s physical and mental development is to feel happy, secure and loved. Physiological changes which occur when we are continuously stressed, damage our health and immunity. The stress may be mental, from a difficult home situation for example, or physical, such as when being fed foods to which the body is intolerant. So first, look after the emotional needs of your child. Homeopathy, Herbal and Bach Flower Remedies can help to settle a fretful child or one who is unable to concentrate. See a Homeopath or natural health practitioner for help with both these and childhood ailments, for safe and effective natural remedies which come without harmful side effects. Secondly, ‘Let food be thy medicine’! By providing your child with a diet rich in non-processed organic whole foods, including plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, using fresh herbs such as basil, rosemary or parsley in your cooking, and avoiding refined and processed foods, sugars, artificial sweeteners, microwaved foods and preservatives, you will give him the nutrients he needs, without adding to his ‘toxic burden’. An organic diet is the way to reduce pesticide residues and to avoid eating GM (genetically modified) foods. Make sure he or she has regular bedtimes and good sleep. Children also need to play outside where they get sunshine to top up essential vitamin D levels, develop muscles and joints, learn to make sense of the world around them, and to respect nature.

If after making these changes, you feel that your child needs further help or dietary advice, see a nutritional therapist, natural health practitioner or homeopath. They will need to know the whole health history of your child to help identify the source of problems and to suggest a tailor-made nutritional plan, advising on appropriate supplementation of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that can work in synergy to help bring your child’s health back to balance. Appropriate supplements are of enormous value in the right circumstances. If you buy for cheapness, not purity, however, you can add to your child’s toxic burden. Cheaper brands may be packed with added sugar, or worse still, artificial sweeteners, colourants, flavourings, and GM ingredients. Tablets usually require synthetic binding agents too, but then for children, liquid supplements are best. There is no swallowing risk, plus liquids are highly absorbable and can be hidden in a smoothie.

If you’ve walked into any pharmacy or retail store to explore the supplement section, you would be forgiven for feeling just a little bit intimidated. Chances are that you will feel confused by the array of products presented to you. Understanding how supplements work and which ones to take can often be confusing when you are starting out, but understanding what you actually want to achieve – whether it be general health maintenance, weight loss or building muscle - is the first step in making supplements work for you. How do supplements differ? Supplementation is usually packed in the most efficient delivery method, and you will commonly find them in the form of tablets, capsules, powders, gels, liquids or even in the form of bars, and can be used to boost energy, to address any dietary shortfalls and can help you prepare for and / or recover from exercise. Supplements can even be used, in the management of health related concerns. Supplements can be split up into two categories – maintenance and performance options. When trying to determine which category to use, it is always suggested that people should first define what they are trying to achieve.

…it is always suggested that people should first define what they are trying to achieve… Certain nutrients are difficult to obtain even in the context of a healthy diet and supplementing with them indefinitely may be necessary. This is called maintenance supplementation. For example, vitamins; minerals; botanicals; plant sterols and essential fatty acids. Then there is performance supplementation, which most people will be familiar with. This involves taking specific nutrients, for a specific purpose, for a specific period of time, such as with snack replacements and protein options like a protein shake or protein bar.

It’s important to select supplements based on creating a foundation for good health… Where should I start when considering supplements? You have to start by understanding your goal. Once you know where you are, and what you want to achieve, you can then decide which category of products will best meet your needs. Often, you may find that you will use a combination of the two with a good quality multi-nutrient along with a post-workout drink like whey protein. It is important to select supplements based on creating a foundation for good health, and from there, selecting products that either help athletic performance or support a physical goal. Following a healthy, well balanced or goal specific eating strategy that includes a variety of macronutrients from various sources, with regular exercise is critical for a balanced approach. Who should take supplements? Almost anyone can benefit from using maintenance or performance supplementation, whether to improve health or to assist in achieving a physical goal. Over the years, research has shown that nutrition plays an important role in preventing diseases, but more recently we have seen an increase in the research body around performance gains. With optimal nutrition, including dietary supplements, you are able to rewrite your life story with a happier ending.

Reasons why individuals should look at using a nutritional supplements  Irregular meal intake;  Overcooking foods, or poor food selection;  Normal aging related to digestive issues;  A decline in soil diversity and quality (and consequent decline in nutrient density of foods);  A decrease in diversity of plant species consumed along with longer transit times for food to reach us;  An increase in exposure to food and environmental toxins;  Overuse of antibiotics, birth control and other medications (damaging the gut and liver);  An increase in chronic mental and physical stress levels;  A decrease in sleep quality and duration;  A reduced connection with nature and less time spent outdoors.

…daily, top-of-the-line multivitamin is very beneficial to your general wellbeing, along with a quality Omega-3… What are the general guidelines for supplement usage? A daily, top-of-the-line multivitamin is very beneficial to your general wellbeing, along with a quality Omega-3 supplement. There are no specific guidelines around age recommendations, but many health conscious consumers choose to make use of such products early on.”

Performance supplements are generally used in acute, short-term periods of time. Most maintenance supplementation (vitamins/ minerals) options could be considered from a relatively early age but should definitely be introduced around winter time when the risk of infection increases. Performance supplements are generally used in acute, short-term periods of time. This is typically supported by a healthy, well balanced, nutrient dense eating plan and regular exercise to achieve a specific physical goal like weight control or muscle gain.

… No volume of supplementation can undo a poor diet, so nutritional corrections need to be made to improve the effects and results of any supplementation… How will I know if supplements are really working? It’s simple, if you are feeling better, achieving your results, or seeing reductions in the prevalence of health concerns – your products are working. If not, you may need to revise the way you are approaching your strategy. Since supplementation forms a relatively small, but vital part of your diet, you will certainly have to review what you eat, the volumes consumed and the frequency of meals. No volume of supplementation can undo a poor diet, so nutritional corrections need to be made to improve the effects and results of any supplementation selected.

…your success is not solely placed on your supplements of choice. It should be placed on your nutrition and exercise strategy, with supplements simply enhancing… The reality is that with performance supplementation, (for weight control or muscle gain), your success is not solely placed on your supplements of choice. It should be placed on your nutrition and exercise strategy, with supplements simply enhancing, improving and accelerating the rate at which you achieve those goals. Supplements have various functions, but in essence, well developed supplements have been designed to help regain health, improve performance or to assist with recovery.

Ohm. Ummm. Huh?

By Michael Thomas Sunnarborg

"Follow my instructions. Close your eyes. Sit still. Don't talk. Take a deep breath. Exhale slowly. Drop your shoulders, and just breathe. How do you feel?" "Um... better... ?“

Okay, so meditation. Right. Got it. It helps people relax. That doesn't seem so difficult. You just sit down and breathe for a few minutes, right? Or what do you do, exactly... and why are people saying it's so important? First, let's get one thing clear. If you don't think you're meditating because you are not sitting on a yoga mat with your legs crossed chanting Sanskrit, I've got a surprise for you: You're already doing it.

Do you ever sit down, take a deep breath, and calm your thoughts? Ever listen to really good music while you're mowing the lawn, cooking dinner, or cleaning the house? Ever brainstorm with a group, paint a picture, play a musical instrument, or write a poem? Then you've been in a form of meditation, my friend.

The key to meditation is focus. Meditation comes naturally when we shift our focus to being present--when we release our minds from our thoughts and reconnect with our inner being, the source of our natural spiritual energy. Meditation relaxes us and puts us in a natural state of flow, which is the key to unlocking the doors to our creativity. Sure, there are formal meditation practices, but I've found others. In fact, I can clearly identify three types of meditation that I practice on a daily basis to some degree: Still, Moving, and Creative. Depending on the setting or circumstance, all of these forms of meditation can be done alone or with others. Here's how I would describe each:

1) Still Meditation Definition: A traditional form of meditation using deep breathing; sitting still in a comfortable position with eyes closed; and clearing the mind of thought and/or focusing on a key thought, phrase, or word (mantra) to focus the energy. Benefits: Reduces stress, relaxes the mind and body, supports feelings of relief, calms "inner chatter," and expands awareness. Drawbacks: Requires time; a large amount of patience (even for 15 minutes!); and a quiet space without distraction -- usually not even music. Best option: Early mornings; before bedtime; during weekends, vacation, down time; or in times of great indecision or challenges.

2) Moving Meditation Definition: The practice of getting centered by allowing thoughts to flow freely while moving the body -- perhaps walking, running, exercising, doing housework, etc. Benefits: Reduces stress, gives a physical/mental/spiritual outlet for energy to be released from the body, supports improved mood, stimulates creative thinking and problem solving. Drawbacks: Requires time, outdoor locations or larger spaces (if indoors), and may require equipment or supplies. Best option: In the morning immediately after rising, during the day (maybe during lunch), after work, weekends, or on days when ideas need to process. Also works best to help start out the day fresh or release stress at the end of the day to assist with relaxing at night.

3) Creative Meditation Definition: Getting into the "create zone" by immersing yourself into creative flow-allowing new creative ideas to come to you by using techniques like brainstorming, free writing, and possibility thinking. Benefits: Generates new ideas, allows for creative expression, taps creative intuition, and welcomes coincidence and creative collaboration. Drawbacks: Can be time-consuming, may hit creative roadblocks and stalemates, and may sometimes require input from others to be most effective. Doesn't work well if you're not in the creative mood. If using creative meditation with a group, you may need to all be in sync (commonly referred to as synergy) to be most effective. This may require larger blocks of time or minimal disruptions to stay in the creative flow. Best option: Best used when creating new ideas, solving a creative challenge, inventing a new product or service, or strengthening collaboration with others.

Meditation? Sure! Whatever kind of practice works for you. The act of relaxing while focusing your thoughts, letting go of distractions, and allowing yourself to move into your creative flow will always benefit you -regardless of what you call it. www.michaelsunnarborg.com/

Negative Thoughts? Throw Them Out (Literally) and Four Other Ideas It’s easy to be negative. The human mind is wired to detect and dwell on negative events and circumstances. Think about cavemen who went out hunting and gathering food for their families. Those who survived did so because they were sharply attuned to possible attacks from saber-toothed tigers lurking in the bush. In modern times, we don’t need to run from predators, yet we’re left with an evolutionary imprint called the negativity bias or the tendency to have greater sensitivity to negative events than to positive events. So how can we topple the negativity bias? How can we kick negative thoughts to the curb?

Try one of these five ideas: 1. Throw them out Here’s a simple way to halt negative thoughts: write them down, rip them up, and throw them in the garbage. In a recent Ohio State University study, a group of people were asked to write down negative thoughts on slips of paper and then later throw the papers in the trash. Another group was asked to do the same thing except keep the papers with them. The results? Researchers discovered that throwing out a negative thought literally helps discard the thought mentally. A co-author of the study, Richard Petty, said, “However you tag your thoughts — as trash or as worthy of protection — seems to make a difference in how you use those thoughts.”

3. Express gratitude Our memories are not carved in stone. Research suggests memories of certain unpleasant experiences can become progressively magnified in our mind which, in turn, leads to rumination and negative thinking. Fortunately, these studies also demonstrate that expressing gratitude makes us more likely to remember positive memories and can even transform neutral and negative memories into positive ones. Gratitude also boosts resilience. For example, if you receive a poor performance evaluation or test grade, focusing on past evaluations or tests where you’ve performed well can enhance the ability to cope with a current challenge. Start a gratitude journal. It doesn’t have to be fancy, you can even use your phone each night to write down a few good things that happened during the day.

4. Label your thoughts Instead of saying, “My life is so hard,” try saying, “I’m having the thought that my life is so hard.” Making this subtle (but conscious) shift creates a buffer between your thought and your emotional and behavioral reaction to it. In other words, you are training yourself to truly understand that you are not your thoughts. You can have a negative thought, but not necessarily an adverse reaction to it.

5. Stop trying Wait, isn’t the point of the this article to help eliminate negative thoughts? The truth is that we don’t need to be free from all negative thoughts. Negative thoughts and emotions are a natural part of the human condition. In fact, a healthy dose of negative thinking can sometimes be a catalyst for change. So, what do you do when the thought pops up? Researchers on thought suppression, Brook Marcks and Douglass Woods, say, “Struggling with your target thought is like struggling in quicksand. I want you to watch your thoughts. Imagine that they are coming out of your ears on little signs held by marching soldiers. I want you to allow the soldiers to march by in front of you, like a little parade. Do not argue with the signs, or avoid them, or make them go away. Just watch them march by.”

You can also simply acknowledge your negative thought as a form of protection. Try saying this: “Thanks, brain, for the thought—I get that you’re trying to communicate with me.” In this, rather than changing your thought, you are changing your relationship with it.

Tapping utilizes the body’s energy meridian points by stimulating them with your fingertips – literally tapping into your body’s own energy and healing power. EFT, otherwise known as Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a type of Meridian Tapping that combines ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology with startling results. From pain relief, to healing childhood traumas, to clearing limiting financial beliefs, to weight loss, body image and food cravings, to fears and phobias, Tapping is proving to be a powerful, wellresearched and easy to learn and apply technique.

Your body is more powerful than you can imagine… filled with life, energy, and a compelling ability for self-healing. With Tapping, you can take control of that power. I’ll explain exactly how EFT Tapping works and why it is so effective, but before I do that, check out this video, originally filmed for our 2013 Tapping World Summit, which was attended online by over 500,000 people, for a full explanation, along with a visual demonstration on EFT Tapping

I’ll show you a video demonstration on how to tap below, but here are the basic principles to know:

The basic technique requires you to focus on the negative emotion at hand: a fear or anxiety, a bad memory, or any other aspect around an unresolved problem, or anything that’s bothering you. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue, use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times each on 12 of the body’s meridian points. Tapping on these meridian points – while concentrating on accepting and resolving the negative emotion – will access your body’s energy, restoring it to a balanced state. You may be wondering about these meridians. Put simply, energy circulates through your body along a specific network of channels. You can tap into this energy at any point along the system. This concept comes from the doctrines of traditional Chinese medicine, which referred to the body’s energy as “chi.” In ancient times, the Chinese discovered 100 meridian points. They also discovered that by stimulating these meridian points, they could heal. Call it energy, call it the Source, call it life force, call it chi… Whatever you want to call it, it works.

In some ways, Tapping is similar to acupuncture. Like Tapping, acupuncture achieves healing through stimulating the body’s meridians and energy flow. However, unlike acupuncture, Tapping involves NO needles! “No needles” is definitely one of the advantages of Tapping.

Acupuncture also takes years to master. Acupuncture practitioners must memorize hundreds of meridian points along the body; the knowledge and training take years to acquire. Tapping is simple and painless. It can be learned by anyone. And you can apply it to yourself, whenever you want, wherever you are. It’s less expensive and less time consuming. It can be used with specific emotional intent towards your own unique life challenges and experiences. Most importantly, it gives you the power to heal yourself, putting control over your destiny back into your own hands. –

A traumatic start to life

It seemed so long ago that I experienced my first trauma, 45 years to be exact when I was born with the umbilical cord wrapped twice around my neck! Let alone the years of abuse as a child. But that was so long ago so how could that affect me now? This was not something I really considered until I heard about TRE® (trauma/Tension releasing exercises) by Dr David Berceli©. In April 2010 I attended the very first TRE® training in South Africa with 40 participants across the country. I arrived with chronic back pain and an enormous amount of fear that had ruled me most of my life from the age of 5yrs. I attended because I was desperate to relieve and manage the pain in my body, that was the most I hoped for because well everything else I had tried gave me just that….slight relief and some kind of management of pain. I did not expect to walk away with my life back and if you never believed you can be free of your ‘stuff’ be it mental, emotional or physical, you may just be wrong!

I woke up the day after training without any pain in my lower back. It actually took me a few minutes that morning to realize that something was different? I had no pain and I was bewildered and elated and spent the rest of the day hoping this wasn’t temporary. It is now 6 years later and still no pain. At the age of 16 I fell and injured by L5/S1 joint and my orthopaedic surgeon was dumb founded that I was pain free. However the biggest gift that I walked away with was a dissolving of my fearful triggers and at the time I didn’t really understand how the brain stem worked and just how powerful our fight flight/freeze response is in our bodies. So how did this happen?

Trauma and the Body connection When we experience any kind of trauma or long term stress, we usually feel this mentally and emotionally and the reality is that it starts in the body. The symptoms of trauma/stress can be anxiety, fear, anger, depression, busy thoughts, suicidal thoughts and fatigue to name a few. So in order to address the trauma or long term stress, it makes better sense to release from the body, the same place it was created. When faced with danger, our brain stem sends certain messages to our muscle to form a contraction for the purpose of getting us out of danger by either fighting off (fight) or running (flight) from our enemy or perceived threat. We cannot do that effectively unless our body is strong and this is where the contraction will give us power or speed. This all happens autonomically and we do not decide consciously how to respond or react, we just do and it is these experiences that form our coping mechanisms in life. I have many people in my practice who feel helpless about their anger or anxiety and in some cases the person is not even aware of what may be causing this response. When we go through their medical history, there is almost always some kind of trauma that happened a long time ago. The reality is that unless these contractions in our body are released, the triggers of our past experiences will continue to arise in our lives. It is a physiological and neurological fact. In today’s world, we do not always have the opportunity to execute our fight/flight response as we are supposed to and so we end up with a high nervous system charge associated to our event. It is not possible to literally fight your boss or run from an emotionally abusive relationship and so we store this unresolved charge in the body. Over time, our brain will disconnect from the tight muscle as a means of preservation and this is when we hit that I ‘can’t do’ phase- people are tired, no motivation, can’t connect with others. In children this is indicated by low muscle tone, ADD and behaviour swings. Children more than often disconnect from danger as they do not have the ability to rationalize or the skill to manage danger as an adult would. They told me my son would never be able to read at the age of 5. He was born under traumatic circumstances and we almost lost him. Today he is off all medication, in grade 10 and an 80% average student. He wants to be a doctor … and yes, he Does TRE.

Animal Instinct Wild animals are conditioned to instinctively survive and to execute their fight/flight response to get out of danger. Think of a lioness who chases a herd of buck. The lioness catches one of the herd (so now the danger is over for the other buck as the lioness has her food) These buck will literally stop about 100m away, shake from head to tail and toe and carry on grazing. The difference between animals and human beings is that we have a cognitive brain that keeps us trapped in our events (PTSD).

What is TRE® TRE® (Trauma and tension releasing exercises) was developed by Dr David Berceli©. It initiates an essential muscle release (as animals do) using a series of exercises that send messages to the brain. The final result is a very relaxed position where a deep vibrational muscle release takes place. This is an intelligent process and one that continues from where it left off from the last session. This is not an exercise program and after about 4 sessions, the exercises can be shortened as the brain knows what to do when we lie down in the tremor (TRE®) position. It is a tool for life

Haley has been personally trained by Dr Berceli© and is a Certification trainer and Provider of TRE. She practices from Kyalami Estates, Gauteng. C: 0836277743 E: haley@tregautneg.co.za trejhb@gmail.com Skype: haley.ritzlmayr

The NEW TRE book has just been published and it is excellent! 23 TRE providers from 13 countries and 3 languages (English, Spanish & Portuguese), wrote chapters for this new book. It explains: - the neurology of the tremor mechanism - the physiological changes it helps to produce in the body - the psycho-social applications of the way people use TRE around the world. You can order the book immediately as a hard copy from: www.createspace.com/5054152 It will be available on Amazon.com. You can search it with the ISBN # ISBN-13: 978-1515065289. It will also be available for purchase on our website www.traumaprevention.com in the TRE Store.

www.helenhansen.co Q1: Do you think nourishing food can affect your child's experience at school? Q2: How can you ensure your child eats the food packed in the lunchbox? A1: A study published in the journal Public Health Nutrition looked at the connection between food and assessment results at primary school. It was found that brain function is optimal amongst students who eat a healthy breakfast and continue to eat nutritious food throughout the day. Leafy greens are a powerful source of brain food as well as emotional stabilizers. You can sneak them into juices by covering them up with apples, cucumbers and pineapple. A wonderfully sweet way to start the day. A2: If your 'sweetie pie', 'munchkin' or 'sausage' (btw: why do we talk about our kids in terms of food?) comes home with uneaten food in the lunch box, try out Mary-Ann Shearer's suggestion. Mary-Ann is a Natural Health Expert of 30 years and you can listen to her advice here. She also gives ideas for nutritious lunch box snacks. Click here to listen to this audio.

We know that we need fish oils and Omega 3 in our diets and that supplementation is a good idea in this regard. But what many of us don’t know is that Omega 3 contains two complementary fatty acids, both of which serve different functions in the body, and both of which we need. EPA and DHA are two of the most essential acids This fatty acid reduces levels of required by the body, helping prevent heart disease, blood triglycerides, helping to high cholesterol, depression and rheumatoid arthritis, reduce the risk of heart disease, to name a few. When looking for a good Omega 3 supplement or food source, it’s important to identify and helps improve visual and that both EPA and DHA are present. attention acuity… …helping to prevent heart disease, high cholesterol, depression and rheumatoid arthritis to name a few. EPA Fatty Acids Technically known as Eicosapentaenoic acid, EPAs can be ingested by eating oily fish or fish oil – like salmon, cod liver, mackerel, herring and sardines. EPA is the fatty acid most responsible for lowering inflammation in the body. It is thought to improve patients’ response to chemotherapy, as well as lower the likelihood of developing certain cancers. EPA has also shown impressive benefits in reducing symptoms of schizophrenia, depression and suicidal behaviour.

…supplements have also been created from algae to provide vegetarian / vegan supplements. DHA Fatty Acid DHA is the most abundant Omega 3 fatty acid found in the brain and retina. Much of the DHA we take in comes from oily fish, although supplements have also been created from algae to provide vegetarian / vegan supplements.

Seaweed on its own is not a strong source of DHA – only the concentration into a supplement form offers the body the DHA levels it needs. DHA is also found in breast milk, more so if the mother has a diet high in fish. This fatty acid reduces levels of blood triglycerides, helping to reduce the risk of heart disease, and helps improve visual and attention acuity – beneficial to pregnant women. More recently, DHA has also been shown to increase the effects of chemotherapy in prostate cancer cells.

…one should not look to plant sources alone… Why ALAs aren’t enough Many plant sources contain Omega 3 fatty acids, but they do not produce DHA or EPA. Rather, they are usually high in ALA, or Alphalinolenic acid. Flaxseeds, chia seeds and canola oil are all good examples. While the body can convert ALA to EPA and a very small amount of DHA, this conversion is not considered efficient and it depends on other factors, including oestrogen levels. When considering a healthy source of Omega 3, one should not look to plant sources alone, as these will not provide sufficient amounts of DHA or EPA.

Sugar Body Scrub Since we kicked sugar out our diets, most of us have some sitting unused in the cupboard – perfect for a body scrub!

Ingredients: Makes roughly 1 ½ cups 1 cup brown or white sugar 1 cup oil of choice (coconut or olive is best) 4 drops of quality essential oils – we like lavender best!

Method: 1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir thoroughly. 2. Store in a glass container (essential oils will damage the plastic and metals change the properties of the oils).

Avocado Salad with Toasted Nuts and Seeds Ingredients: 3 T cashew nuts 3 T walnuts 1 T sunflower seeds 1 T black sesame seeds 1 T white sesame seeds 3 ripe avos juice of 1 lemon Fresh chives, finely chopped 3 T sprouts of your choice Big handful fresh coriander, chopped Salt and pepper

Tip them into a mortar and lightly crush with a pestle then set aside. • Cut your avos into bite size chunks, throw into a bowl and add in the lemon juice, chives and seasoning. • Dress with the seeds, nuts and sprouts, garnishing with the coriander.

Pulses are little nutritional powerhouses that we should all include in our diets The United Nations declared 2016 as the International Year of the Pulses (IYP). The hope is to position pulses as a primary source of protein and other essential nutrients. Pulses are little nutritional powerhouses that we should all include in our diets, yet so many of us don’t know what a pulse actually is. Pulses are part of the legume family, but the term “pulse” refers only to the dried seed such as dried peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas. All of these can be sprinkled on salads, added to soups, stews and curries or eaten plain as snacks.

Here are some of the many benefits of pulses: Pulses are a great source of protein, making them an excellent alternative to meat, fish or dairy products. You can also add pulses to meat dishes to add extra texture and flavour while using less meat, which makes dish healthier, lower in fat and more economical. Pulses are a good source of iron, vitamins and minerals. They add fibre to your meals, reducing the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. One cup of cooked lentils contains more than 15g of fibre, meeting 60 percent of your daily recommended value. Pulses are also high in potassium. Including more potassium-rich foods in your diet can lower blood pressure by counteracting the effects of sodium. Pulses will give you sustained energy all day with their low glycaemic index. Foods with a low glycaemic index cause only a small rise in blood sugar, while foods with a high glycaemic index cause a spike in blood sugar. The official South African signature dish for the IYP is a traditional potjie. The following link shows a step by step guide on how to make this delicious dish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY1x0bnm-aw The following brands are partners of IYP in South Africa: Tiger Brands

Bean there done that It’s time to get back to basics and to that little pulse with lots of protein. The bean, a centuries old staple food, is healthy, nutritious and sustainably-produced. It is an excellent source of protein, fibre and micronutrients and an essential addition to a health-conscious diet. Try this Pouyoukas 5 Bean Mix salad. It’s economical and delicious. One cup of raw beans makes 2¾ cups cooked beans. Remember to soak the beans overnight in cold water or, for a short cut, cover and microwave for three minutes on high, then leave to stand for 30 minutes.

Zesty 5 bean salad Ingredients

Method

In a large bowl, combine the 5 Bean Mix, lemon juice, lemon zest, ginger, olive oil, spring onions, parsley and carrot. Season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour before serving. This salad can be made a day in advance and left in the fridge to marinate and absorb the flavours.

Beetroot Boost The mighty beetroot can be a great natural boost as we head into Winter. Here are some tips on how to use the glorious vegetable… To prepare a great beetroot booster, juice one medium beetroot, one to two apples and two to three medium carrots (no need to cook the beetroot first). To increase its medicinal value, add a teaspoonful of lime juice to beetroot juice. Fresh beet juice mixed with a tablespoonful of honey and taken every morning before breakfast helps the healing of gastric ulcer. Traditionally beet juice, combined with the juices of carrot and cucumber, is one of the finest cleansers for the kidneys and gall bladder. Beets contain an abundance of minerals: potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sulphur, iodine, iron, manganese, chlorine, and copper, as well as traces of the rare metals rubidium and caesium; vitamins B1, B2, niacin, B6, B12, C, P, and beta carotene; flavonoids; natural sugar, and a good quality and quantity of amino acids. Always use organically grown beetroots.

Our food should supply all the nutrients needed for providing energy, growth, building and repairing tissues and maintaining health. By Heather Picton A marginal nutrient deficiency would not necessarily cause a severe illness, but could result in a vague feeling of not being well accompanied by a cluster of minor symptoms. Nutritional deficiencies in ADD/ADHD children could severely exacerbate the range of problems they already face. In some cases, identifying and correcting existing deficiencies have not only cleared up some of the problems but has also helped the child to cope more effectively with those that remain. Ideally the necessary vitamins and minerals should be obtained from food in the normal diet rather than from supplementation. People with poor eating habits will usually be lacking in a range of vitamins and minerals, which explains their vast improvement when taking supplementation. When buying supplements it is advisable to purchase a well-balanced multivitamin and mineral preparation which has a range of the required vitamins and minerals combined in the correct proportions. When purchasing a particular vitamin or mineral to correct a specific problem, time and money can be saved by first consulting a homeopath or a dietitian for specialist advice. They know the quantities that should be taken and what other vitamins and minerals ought to be taken to ensure that the body will be able to use and benefit from supplementation.

Do not throw pumpkin pips away – they are a valuable source of zinc and can be eaten fresh, dried, or roasted as a snack.

Supporting someone with substance abuse Caring for someone who has mental health and drug and alcohol issues is complex. It can be hard to tell what came first, the mental illness or the drug and alcohol issues. Quite often, people turn to drugs as a way of coping with their symptoms. While this can mask the effect of their symptoms, if they stop using the drug their issues may return. For example, using a particular drug may help someone cope with their persistent low mood, but if they stop using the drug this symptom of depression will return. This can be an overwhelming feeling and act as a trigger, tempting people to start using again – creating a merry-go-round of substance abuse. On the other hand, someone may have good mental health, but after using drugs they may experience mental health symptoms.

It is common for people caring for someone with a mental health condition, or drug and alcohol issues, to be unsure of what they can do to help. So how can we support people who are experiencing both mental health and drug or alcohol issues? Here are some tips to help you support your loved one: •Keep communication lines open Encourage your loved one to talk about their experiences. Start by talking openly and in a non-judgmental way about your own experiences. Be careful not to start blaming your loved one as this can lead to defensiveness and a break down in communication. The Mental Illness Fellowship have some good tips on communication in their Effective Communication factsheet.

•Be patient Depending on where your loved one is in their recovery, they may or may not be willing to use support services. If they’re not ready, this doesn’t mean that they won’t be in the future. As hard as it may be, this is a time when you need to be patient. Unfortunately there is not much you can do other than minimise the harm the drug poses to your loved one and others around them, including family or friends.

•Remember relapse is part of recovery It’s important to remember that relapse (starting to use drugs again) is a normal part of recovery. In fact, most people do not permanently stop using the first time round. What is important is not that they have relapsed, but they are still trying. If your loved one relapses, and is feeling disheartened, remind them that they’re doing well. Instead of focusing on ‘failure’ encourage them to look at what triggered them to use again, so they can overcome the trigger next time. For instance, if your loved one used because they felt anxious, work together to develop ways to cope with this anxiety.

•Educate yourself Knowledge is power. Understanding the effects of the substance, can help you understand its impact on your loved one. For example, using drugs can alter a person’s mood, perception and behaviour. A good place to start is the Drug info website, which offers comprehensive information on a range of drug related topics.

•Suggest an appropriate support service If your loved one is open to the idea, suggest they contact a drug, alcohol and mental health support service. If possible, there are ‘dual diagnosis’ services that can assist in the management of substance abuse and mental health issues.

•Set clear boundaries This is important. Boundaries keep everyone safe and set clear guidelines for communication and behaviour. You can set boundaries for what you feel is necessary in your situation. For example, you may have rules about lending money, or limiting a conversation if it is unproductive. For further tips on setting and keeping boundaries, have a look at the Coping Tips information on Family Drug Support websites.

•Look after yourself This may be most important of all. Caring for a loved one who is struggling with mental illness and addiction can be a very challenging and stressful time. Caring for yourself is very important for your own wellbeing, as well as the relationship with your loved one. Looking after yourself is a very personal thing - what works for someone else may not necessarily work for you. It could include a range of things, such as getting a full night’s rest, or zoning out with some trashy TV. Basically whatever works for you and your lifestyle. Finally, you should establish a support network for yourself. There are organizations that offer support groups and counselling services which can be a great help to carers if the situation becomes too much.

Getting Real with Miss Earth SA Ambassador: Rebecca McNally

How She & the Miss Earth Programme Make South Africa Greener & How We Can Too Who is Rebecca McNally? Tell us a little more about yourself… I am an enthusiastic person and I like to throw myself into everything I do. My overarching aim is to get the most out of life and to experience as much as I can during my time on this incredible planet. I’m grounded by my family and love nothing more than spending time with my parents, siblings and amazing man. My happy place is the Vaal Dam, where I’ve spent many a weekend and holiday with family and friends. It’s also the place my fiancé made his proposal! A very happy place…

“I was able to get involved in a number of socioenvironmental projects…opened my eyes to the real issues people are facing in South Africa” What prompted you to enter the Miss Earth SA Leadership Programme ? I entered the Miss Earth SA leadership programme because my focus had been centred around my studies and, despite having always been interested in and concerned with environmental and sustainability issues, I hadn’t had much practical experience in getting involved in my community. Miss Earth SA offered the opportunity for meaningful involvement with people and planet. Through the Miss Earth programme, I was able to get involved in a number of socio-environmental projects which opened my eyes to the real issues people are facing in South Africa.

What aspects of the way you approach and live life helped you become a finalist? The fact that I value life in all its forms and try to preserve it through my interactions, made me an acceptable candidate for the Miss Earth SA programme. Thereafter, I think my passion for life and my positive energy enabled me to effectively integrate myself with others, which meant that my values and life principles could be well-received.

I have learnt there is a lot to be gained by drawing on existing frameworks rather than trying to start from scratch as an individual What have you learnt in your reign as a Miss Earth SA Ambassador and how has it changed you and your behaviour? The Miss Earth SA programme provided and still provides an invaluable platform for meaningful involvement in environmental and social frameworks. Before I entered the programme, I had long been interested in environmental and social mediation. However, I had little practical, hands-on experience in giving of myself to the world and to others. Miss Earth SA provides the support, backing, exposure and education that opens many doors to the world of greening and ‘giving back.’

While getting involved in my community through my Miss Earth experiences, and promoting ‘green’ consciousness and sustainable thinking, I have learnt that there is a lot to be gained by drawing on existing frameworks rather than trying to start from scratch as an individual. It is far better to add value to a system that is already working than to compete with it. On a personal level, my experiences have genuinely transformed the way I look at people and planet. I have gained confidence and practical experience, and have been completely humbled by the incredible people I have met along the way. The individuals who have helped me with my projects have exposed me to such selflessness and strength and taught me a great deal about some South African realities of which I was rather ignorant.

What is your fulltime career? I completed my Masters in Architecture at Wits University in 2014. I am now in my second year of employment at Nicholas Whitcutt Architects (NWA). At NWA, we focus on sustainable architecture, heritage preservation, and bespoke commercial projects, always upholding the paradigm of ‘green consciousness.’ One of our current projects is a sustainably-built student facility in Skukuza in the Kruger Park, which applies locally sourced materials and passive thermal and ventilation control. This particular project has been an interesting experience and a great opportunity for me.

Please tell us more about your interest in protecting the environment. What was your tipping point? My concern with environmental issues began from an early age and I have in the past been involved in various fundraisers and projects focused on mediating these environmental issues. As I grew up, and as my interests centred on the realm of architecture and design, my ideas about the human-nature relationship found a footing in sustainable design and green building methods.

But I also believe that sensitivity and empathy can only be gained by immersing oneself in the subject and experiencing its positive and negative aspects first hand My tipping point was when I realised not only how much of an impact I, as a consumer have on the world, but the potential impact I could have on it as a designer. I strongly believe that, through sensitivity to the world around us, through an awareness of our impact and through an attitude of empathy and care; designers can significantly improve upon the humannature relationship. I strive to apply this manifesto to my career as an architect. But I also believe that sensitivity and empathy can only be gained by immersing oneself in the subject and experiencing its positive and negative aspects first hand. That is why an initiative like Miss Earth is a good one, it allows for first hand involvement with the pros and cons of our relationship with the natural world. It helps for an individual like myself to get involved and help in my small way. I have a circle of influence that I can share with and help change their behaviour and it’s my responsibility to do so.

What adjustments did you make to your lifestyle and what tips do you have for our readers to do the same? I have become much more aware of my own impact in terms of waste and energy use. I focus on reducing my carbon footprint and saving water as much as I can in my home and work life. Readers can look into the Bokashi system; this is a wet waste / food waste recycling solution to reduce your landfill contribution. We recycle with ECOmonkey which I recommend all individuals start separating at source and not thinking

that my waste is someone else’s problem, we have to separate and sort out as much as we can and reduce the landfill dependency. Pikitup run several waste educational programme and clean-up projects like the #TeamUpToCleanUp campaign on social media as well as the activations where every citizen can get involved with them to make sure we all contribute to the solution and not just the problem.

Establishing our own food gardens makes us independent and helps us connect with the Earth. Establishing our own food gardens makes us independent and helps us connect with the Earth. To save water while brushing your teeth is important but to invest in a rainwater harvesting tank like Jojo Tanks secures you with plenty water straight from the source. We need to become more self-sufficient to become more resilient to Climate Change. Drink good filtered water, exercise and look after yourself. Looking after one’s own health is also important and I try to keep fit and healthy and never take my vitality for granted. Programmes like Sweat 1000 are great ways to challenge yourself and keep fit. Lorna Jane is also a beautiful brand of active wear , come join us at yoga class at a Sweat 1000 branch - because if you do not take care of yourself first you are not able to look after others or the planet. I have also been trying to use as many eco-friendly products as possible. There are a variety of products and treatments on the market for women who love a bit of pampering like products from Camelot International C-Spa and Healing Earth. Tan organics natural self-tan have great products that are free from damaging ingredients and keep you out of the harsh sun. I like to think of it as being sun-kissed rather than sun burnt…

Tell us more about the projects you have been involved in over the last year and any you are currently involved in and what they aim to achieve? Last year the Miss Earth programme was involved in the establishment and maintenance of vegetable gardens and tree planting initiatives in communities all over the country. This year, the focus is on waste management and recycling in schools and communities in collaboration with Pikitup. The aim is to encourage separation of waste at source and to promote ownership and responsibility through the #WasteStopsWithMe initiative. How can one get involved? To get involved, one can contact the Miss Earth Head

Getting to know Rebecca… What are your guilty pleasures? Chocolate, driving a jet ski too fast, shopping with my mom/sisters

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Do you have any hobbies? I read a lot; I can’t get to sleep without reading a book! I love water sports like boating, tubing, jet skiing and slalom skiing. I also got into rock climbing recently which I thoroughly enjoy, although I have to take a break now that I’m pregnant. A good braai with great friends is also time well spent for me!

4 items on your bucket list and why I want to see as many natural wonders as I can. My time spent in the Kruger Park was great for that, but I’d also like to see things like the Northern Lights, go scuba diving, climb mountains, and visit beautiful places.

How can one get involved? To get involved, one can contact the Miss Earth Head Office and enquire about the on-going projects. Also, one can get involved in the local community in many ways. By starting at home with small things like separating and recycling waste, saving water, planting trees/vegetable gardens and thereafter expanding into the community and linking to existing frameworks, one can have a truly positive impact.

“I would like for my child to simply love life.” We understand that you are expecting, is this your 1st baby? What values and attributes do you hope to instil in your child? Yes! It’s my first baby and it’s been such an amazing journey so far. I’m just starting to feel the first proper kicks and wriggles and it’s so exciting. I would like for my child to simply love life. I think with that love naturally comes care and empathy for others and for the earth. I hope to instil in him/her an appreciation of family as I believe our families are what ground us and give us that push we need to make the most of our lives.

The Miss Earth SA family is a well-established and powerful archive of built-up experience and an extensive, ever-growing network of strong, mindful young women. It is of huge value to be part of that family and I am grateful for the values and experience I gained by being a part of the programme that I can pass on to my child.

Plans for the future – where do you see yourself 5 years from now? In 5 years, I’d like to have made some headway with starting a property development company with my husband, where we purchase property which we retrofit with ‘green’ technology or renovate to make it more sustainable for people and planet. I am also looking into starting a NGO focused on the establishment of decentralised small-scale urban farms. I would like to travel the world a bit more and be in a position where my husband and I have bought a house for a few more siblings for our new baby

The planet is in danger of being destroyed by our greatest threat, ourselves!!!! It’s up to all of us to ensure we do not destroy the environment in which we live and the future environment in which our children will live. Recycling is as simple as separating home waste and educating our children to do the same. If we all take this step, it will make a huge difference to our environment and ensure that the various recyclables are recycled and disposed of in the correct manner or sent to the correct facilities for re-use. Recycling is a great way to save our natural resources and even generate energy. At ECOmonkey they are taking the first important step to try and minimise harmful waste left in our environment, by working with communities to clean up our surroundings, namely local parks and streams to create a clean environment and further creating employment opportunities through this initiative. Earth Probiotic help you to recycle your food waste into food for the soil with their Bokashi Recycling Kits. Working together, these two companies do a great job in helping to ensure the health of the planet. Let them help you do the same…

We make a difference… Do you??? Let's take the 1st step in creating a cleaner environment & ensuring our children have a brighter, cleaner future...

We collect your recycling & create employment: We collect & deliver the materials to various, community recycling projects we support, the materials are sorted & the income goes directly to the community members involved.

Who do we service? Households, flats, townhouse complexes, estates, office complexes, industrial companies & shopping centres. Ensuring recyclables are processed correctly & don’t end up on unsightly, dirty & negatively impacting land fill sites.

The Hope Project Outreach Program Description. This page is highlighting the plight of the forgotten people of South Africa, White squatters. We are dedicated in our quest to alleviate the suffering of children and seniors, living in squalor and poverty, forgotten by mainstream society. Without access to upliftment programs and food, hidden from the world and media, because of the colour of their skin. Our men and woman need jobs, to take care of their children and parents, in a democracy that denies them that right, let us take hands, and take care of our own now, before its too late! “We have families starting over again after years of unemployment, please consider donating any furniture items, from beds to appliances. Also need oil lamps and gas stoves for people who cannot afford electricity. Food, linen, crockery, cutlery etc. “

“We are so excited to announce that we have negotiated a building in the Brakpan camp that we can use as a nursery school. Our greatest concern is for the kids, so this is a huge achievement! We will be able to equip these little ones with knowledge and empower them with confidence. We require all types of schooling items for our building, please consider donating any items you may have that we could use. All reading material in Afrikaans please. This is just the beginning to many more!”

Stem Cell Donation for life threatening blood disorders

Dread diseases like leukaemia affect people all over the world, regardless of background, location ethnicity, age or wealth. Unfortunately Leukaemia is the most prevalent of the 12 types of Childhood Cancers; many Children need stem cell transplants if they do not respond to treatment. In South Africa though, there is on average a 1:100 000 chance of finding an unrelated match within your ethnic group. If you become ill with a blood cancer that requires a stem cell transplant, here’s an uncomfortable fact: Your race matters. For a successful transplant, donor and recipient must have nearly identical genes directly relating to their DNA and ethnic background. It has nothing to do with your blood type. “We need to break the myth that stem cell donation is a painful operation. We would have many more people joining the South African Bone Marrow Registry if people understood that if you are ever a match; the process is actually much like donating blood or platelets. It does not involve drilling into bones for bone marrow.” says Lauren Corlett, Head of Marketing & Communications for The Sunflower Fund. The Sunflower Fund is committed to increasing the number of donors registered in South Africa; however needs to first raise funds to pay the test cost of new donors. At R2000 per test, The Fund relies heavily on fundraising campaigns and the public at large to assist. There are many patients in South Africa who are currently searching for their life saving donor match. The Sunflower Fund urges healthy South Africans between the ages of 18 and 45 to join the national registry and offer HOPE to these patients. “It is a tragic and heart-breaking reality that all too often we lose our brave fighters because they are unable to find a matching donor. We will persevere with our mission to truly make a difference” added Corlett. With every donor The Sunflower Fund recruits, with the funds raised, with every awareness drive, we are giving a chance of life to someone’s child, someone’s parent, someone’s friend.

The Sunflower Fund needs to recruit many more donors from all ethnic groups and urges South African to stand up and make the difference. The more donors registered, the faster these matches can be found and the more lives can be saved. The Sunflower Fund pays for the expensive tissue typing tests involved, so all that is being asked of you is your time.

Did you know? It only takes two test tubes of blood to register you as a donor. It won’t cost you anything. The Sunflower Fund sponsors the R2000 test cost on your behalf.

Process to Register: Call The Sunflower Fund Toll Free Number: 0800 12 10 82 and you will be asked some minor medical questions. Your form will be completed telephonically and you will be emailed your individual registration form. Take this form to the closest SANBS, Pathcare or Western Province Blood Transfusion Services clinic and two small test tubes of blood will be drawn. Your blood is analysed in the lab and you will be registered on the South Africa Bone Marrow Registry.

If you are ever found to be a match, what is the process? The process to donate stem cells is no more invasive than donating blood where you are linked to a blood separating machine for four to six hours. The precious stem cells are filtered out of your blood and your own blood then returned to you. There is no drilling into your bones for bone marrow. You are able to go home immediately afterwards.

BEAUTIFUL YOU was a whisper I continually heard from within my spirit from the tender age of 5. I realized that this was the Plan and Purpose for my life; this was a Gift from God. ‘HOPE IS WHERE THE HEART IS’, is a saying that I constantly heard in my spirit. To me this meant that wherever there is true love, there is hope and true love conquers all hopelessness. I looked at my single mom and was filled with heartache and planned fervently to help single women with children, to give them “petals of hope”. We grew up with an absent dad but realized that our true father was our Heavenly Father and with this revelation I went from a victim to a victor. I would like to believe I have matured into a woman of worth through life’s trials. I am of the mindset that no matter what circumstance comes your way, use it to educate you, use it to empower you and use it to strengthen. Do not allow it to destroy you. You, as an individual, hold the power to choose which way you want to go. Choose wisely, choose life. My dreams and plans are one in the same, to make a positive difference in the lives of those that I come into contact with through the various charities, businesses, my book and ordinary day to day living. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one solitary step. If the other foot does not follow then we go nowhere, however, if it does follow we can go around the world and further. I believe that a Woman is the heart and foundation of all families and she is the one that can make or break a home. Beautiful You, hopes to bring together women from all walks of life, those that are in need and those that will provide support and ‘fill the gaps’, thereby empowering and educating them thus ending up with empowered and prayerful women who will spread joy, love and peace into their homes and this will most definitely lead to a better society. A woman is a mother, a wife, a teacher, a homemaker, a doctor, a miracle worker, a superhero and in many cases, a father. In the world we live today, there are many problems that each of us encounter day by day. Society is in meltdown. Ill-discipline is rife, Love is in short supply and crime is rampant. Each and every hero or criminal is born of a woman. Every genius or psychotic is born of a woman. The difference in the outcome of their lives is how they were loved, nurtured and disciplined. Beautiful You is determined to empower the lives of all women, to show each and every woman their worth and the outcome will be that each participant will then be an ambassador that will continue to spread the teachings, experience and knowledge that they will be empowered with. The end result will be a better person, a better family, a better community, a better city, a better country culminating in A BETTER WORLD. Is this not what we all need???

A strong appeal from the owner of Vondis By Paul Jacobson

Education is the path to enlightenment and with enlightenment we can derive at the correct and informed decisions. I have no doubt that most consumers, nowadays, acknowledge the benefits that are derived from a healthy life style. I have no doubt that we all understand that a wholesome diet, preferably organic, has a major impact on well being, health and longevity. The conscientious shopper also now looks for grooming products and remedies that are free from chemicals and poisons. I also have no doubt that with the enforcement of the Consumer Protection Act, we have become more familiar with understanding product labels and we have become more vigilant when it comes to accepting some of the dubious ingredients that are listed therein. Yet, and this seriously confuses me, when it comes to caring for our dear beloved companion animals we do NOT apply the same and equal health principles. Is this because the naming of this living being, “cat and dog” is so dry and insensitive? Does it not evoke emotion and passion? Worldwide pet guardians are referring to their animals as “beloved companions”, “members of the family”, “fury children”, “our babies”. Perhaps then, the treatment of our animals will be no different to the way that we look after ourselves and that the same principles of healthy living that we strive for, will apply to our “fury friends”.

Yet, for now:  We are throwing food in a bowl that is highly preserved, that sits unaffected in it packaging for 24 months. This despite us understanding the inherent negativities of preservatives.  We are feeding a diet that is highly processed and is exposed to cooking temperatures reaching 200 degrees. This, even though we know that vitamins, minerals and protein structures are denatured when exposed to heat.  Despite us following various diets, Prof Tim Noakes, Paleo, Atkinson’s, etc which all warn against refined carbs, when it comes to feeding our pets we throw down dried food that is mainly carbs. We know refined carb are acidic in nature and likely to affect skin allergies and arthritis and yet we still persist.  We are feeding a dry diet that is devoid of moisture, even though our cats and dogs are struggling with renal and bladder complications.  We have forgotten how we used to bond with our parents at the dinner table, enjoying moms favorite spaghetti bolognaise, Indian curry, tomato bolognaise. Now we throw down food for our pets without love and attentions and yet we still expect respect and good behavior.  We are even applying flea poisons despite the warning on the packaging that this could be extremely harmful if comes in contact with your skin and that it is advised not to pat your “furry friends” for 48 hours. This despite the fact that after reading the labeling we understand that the active ingredients are a harmful poison.

Now if our companion animals were in prime condition and not struggling with skin aliments, digestive issues, cancer, diabetes, renal complications, arthritis, obesity, heart decease, epilepsy and behavioral issues, then perhaps there would be no need to write this editorial piece. The reality is that almost every pet is struggling with an array of human ailments and that longevity has been reduced. Changing your own life style and diet is always difficult. It is even harder when one has to make changes that affect the well – being of your companion animals. I believe that the psychological terminology for this conflict of change is called “cognitive dissonance”. However, it is necessary, ethical and fair and in deriving at the correct decision and enlightenment, the responsible consumer and pet guardian should apply these three basic mediums: 1.

midst all the marketing jargon one should apply logic, common sense, intuition and gut feel.

2.

there is a wealth of knowledge on the net and in printed material that it is inexcusable not to undertake the necessary research

3.

in an environment when corporate have become zealous without consideration for the public nor environment, the responsible consumer must understand labeling and ingredients. You have the right to know!!

I have no doubt that for most we understand the principles of healthy living and the benefits derived there from. I therefore, have no doubt that if we deem our pets to be companions and members of our family and that we have applied the mediums above, then we MUST derive at the conclusion that “natural” in better than “unnatural”, that wholesome foods are better than processed and that “preservative and chemical free diets and remedies” are a better option than preserved and chemically based.
