Heather Tribute

Heather was the founder of this support group in 1989. It was a cause very close to her heart, and she had been running it as a Director and CEO for over 25 years, making it a notable part of her life. She continued to work in spite of her ill health and was on her way back from Europe to present at an ADHD conference shortly before she passed.

learning was on account of Heather’s advice and encouragement.

Heather was a truly amazing and deeply compassionate person who helped and touched the lives of so many people. She was passionate about the cause of ADHD and worked tirelessly for the support group and for people needing help to cope with ADHD. When I think of Heather, I think of all of those many, many little and big children whose lives became bearable and who felt accepted and cared for after seeing her and how this made a difference to their entire lives. These children were of all ages and some of them are now in their forties! Sean Anderson, who is a Paralympic athlete in archery and currently in Rio is just one of them.

In the beginning, Heather was a lone voice in the wilderness. She was passionate about healthy eating and in particular, keeping children with ADHD away from artificial colourants, flavourants and preservatives, as this had been a solution that she had personally discovered in her own family life. She was a person before her time, as nutrition was not regarded as important by most, when treating ADHD, and certainly not the medical profession at that time. Heather consulted with the British support group and the Feingold association in the US and the support group still makes use of their information on our website, today.

I also think of the understanding and consolation she gave to so many mothers and fathers. Her goal was to help people with ADHD achieve their goals of living functionally and help reduce frustration. Heather aimed to be of service and to help people who were desperate and hopeful. People came from all over Southern Africa for her help. One desperate mother travelled from Lesotho a number of times just to see Heather and her child benefited tremendously from her help. Most of our volunteers in the support group are made up of these same moms who were helped and this has been the case over the years. Heather would always suggest that the benefit of working in the support group would be that they would learn a lot about ADHD. Much of this

It is true that kindness begets more kindness. Heather’s work had a ripple effect until more and more people were reached and these, in turn, reached out to still more people. As result, Aphasia has branches all over the country.

Heather fought a major battle against unhealthy eating and has always kept nutrition as the cornerstone of the support group and we will continue to do this! Most recently, Heather spent time researching healthy foods for the underprivileged people in our population. She came up with really interesting and workable solutions for healthy eating that is affordable, an amazing contribution in a country like South Africa. Healthy eating was just one of the aspect of managing ADHD and Heather advised on all aspects that could affect a child with ADHD, including home and classroom management. Heather gathered a group of professionals around her from the start, a professor of medicine, medical specialists, a dentist, psychologists, educators, business people and marketers, accountants, MAR-APR 2017Conscious Life Magazine

nutritionists, a pharmacist, dieticians and life coaches. There was always a professional board to advise the group. Heather was the most amazing motivator. Heather not only worked for ADHASA but also had her own website to help people and consulted from rooms in Sandton and at home. She also authored, edited and published of a number of books on ADHD and wrote many articles and a regular newsletter about ADHD. Her advice was always practical and really worked. Heather was also a NLP practitioner and a Theta Healing practitioner. Heather gave talks to medical professionals, university students, parents, educators and schools. She was also invited to give a presentation at an international conference on ADHD, organised by CHADD in Texas in the US. Heather was awarded the Rotary Vocational Award by the Rotary club of Roodepoort in 2008: “In recognition of the valuable contribution made to the community.” We were all truly devastated as we expected her to just keep going. However, knowing that she is no longer in pain and can finally rest is our consolation.

Excerpt from the Eulogy given by Dr Norman Cahi Mark Twain once said “Kindness is a language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see”. Ever since I met Heather, almost 19 years ago I have seen her show nothing but extreme KINDNESS To anybody and everybody she came into contact with. My association with Heather began on a professional level but over the years we grew very close to one another and became not only close friends but working, colleagues too when I asked her to join my Dental & Medial Practice as an ADHD consultant.

Right from day 1 Heather made an indelible impression on me ... as a highly intuitive, well educated and refined lady. Heather and I had innumerable one on one in depth discussions on everything and anything. Together we laughed uncontrollably and together we cried inconsolably. Despite me medical knowledge she taught me so much … much more than any level of study ever could.

Heather will be greatly missed but she leaves a legacy of lives changed for the better and of people determined to continue some of the great work she did. We (who have known and worked with this great soul) will keep her legacy going. To Heather, we will miss you and “until we meet again, may god hold you in the palm of his hand.”

Heather was authentic. She spoke from her heart. She made people – adults and especially children feel special, wanted and loved.

Many thanks to Margaret Barry from ADHASA for sharing your Eulogy of Heather Picton with us.

She taught us all how to own our own pain and vulnerability and how to deal with it. She demonstrated that if you treat people right, make them feel happy, this will be reciprocated.

She had a great gift for reaching out to younger people and she always ensured that only the morally correct information was passed on

For those who were closest to Heather, we all learnt from her that in a world of plastic, we need to know STEEL. … To think clearly … Speak cleanly … and act Sincerely … To listen more … To talk less It’s amazing how much you can HEAR when no one is saying anything. Heather always listened twice as much as she spoke. She taught us the superior excellence in SIMPLICITY. But there is a certain MAJESTY in Simplicity. It has been said: “Tears are eloquent testimony and we should not hold them back.” They speak of overwhelming happiness at the joy of having Heather with us all her life, unbearable grief at her demise, deep contrition and unspeakable love we all had for her. Heather, I salute you. Rest well now. Many thanks to you Norman for sharing this with us.

A message from Cj Matticks – Sub Editor Conscious Life Magazine

Looking back now, almost 18 years later, having known Heather for half of my life and certainly all of my adult life, I am truly blessed to be able to say that I became close to Heather over the past 10 years since her son and I parted ways. I grew a lot in these years, much of this due to training in wonderful modalities such as NLP and Theta Healing, which the universe had a way of seeing to it that Heather and I often trained together. I too learned much from Heather over the years: how to love unconditionally; how to accept others for who they are; how to create beautiful wheat, dairy and additive free meals and treats; how to laugh at and not take myself so seriously; that I can strive to be whoever I want to be; and most of all – how to have fun doing it. One of my fondest memories of Heather is skipping down the road with her, arm in arm. Farewell Heather, you will always hold a very dear place in my heart. Much Love and Light to you on the wonderful new journey your are on. Xxx Thank you to David Picton, Heather’s husband, Robert and Christopher Picton – Heather’s sons for the opportunity to publish a tribute to a dear lady. As the 6 month anniversary of Heather’s passing nears, we think of you and send love to you and your beautiful families.

MAR-APR 2017 Conscious Life Magazine

I met Heather when I was 18years old, and at that time, as much as I liked her, I found her really intimidating. You see, I had just started dating her son who was a little bit older than me, and I was desperate for her approval.

Have you ever wondered if long distance relationship is for you? Have you ever felt so strongly for someone but decided to just let those feelings go because that special someone is in a different time zone and the fear of not being constantly together might destroy your relationship? While I am not an expert in long distance relationships, I’ve been in one for 2 years. He lives in the U.S. while I was in the Philippines. So I wanted to share how our long distance relationship ended in marriage and me FINALLY living in the U.S. with him.

My husband and I were schoolmates in college. We met during our freshman year and have remained friends since. A few years after our graduation, we met one night while he was in Manila. And that’s when we both found out that we’ve liked each other since college but we never got around to telling each other that because we were both in a serious relationship then. We had a great time that night that we still decided to go out for a few more times even if he was about to leave for the U.S. in a few days. The day before he left, he told me he wanted to be in a serious relationship with me. Back then, he just got out of a very serious relationship and I was just moving on from a very messy and crazy relationship. It wasn’t the perfect situation for us but I’ve always loved taking risks so I decided to wait and see where the long distance relationship would lead us. It wasn’t easy and it was a huge adjustment for me but I believe these are the things that helped us made our relationship work.

Back when I was younger, I would always think that I don’t deserve a good guy. I felt like someone who has a “bad boy” image suits me better (we’ve all been in this phase, right?). I guess the challenge that comes with being with someone that can never be fully yours is what fuels my desire to get the unattainable. It took me innumerable broken hearts, countless times of crying myself to sleep, and drinking every night just to numb the pain to realize what I really want in a relationship. Although I honestly don’t regret any of the relationships I’ve been in; at the time, those were the things that I wanted, and those are the things that made me happy. Those failed relationships actually helped me realize that I don’t deserve any of those crap; and I deserve someone who will love me and me alone, someone who will treat me like I’m the most beautiful woman in the world (even if I’m really not). And that is how my then-boyfriend made me feel. He managed to make me feel loved and secured even though he was thousands of miles away. So I am thankful for my heartbreaks; because without them I wouldn’t have come to appreciate how lucky I am to have found my husband. MAR-APR 2017

Conscious Life Magazine

Of course, he had his own share of heartbreaks like everyone else does; but I won’t go into any details out of respect for him. And with all the failed relationships that we both have been through, with all the challenges that came with long distance relationships that we’ve faced together like not being together especially when it mattered, it was our maturity that helped us realize that what we have is exactly what we want and what we need. And because of that, no matter what happened, we strove to make it work, all the time.

Constant communication is also very important in long distance relationships. When my husband and I lived thousands of miles apart, we would always chat or Skype twice a day, every single day. Whenever I would go out with my friends, I would stay up late when I get home just to make sure that I still have time to talk to him; and he does the same too. To make up for being thousands of miles away from each other, we would talk about everything that happened in our day – what made us smile, what made us upset, who we ate lunch with, what we ate, everything. It was our way to somehow make the other person be a part of our day; and in the process, we got to know each other a little bit more every day too. And even when we argue, we still talk. Now, that was something that was really hard for me. When I’m angry, I tend to not say a word and just keep it all inside me. But being in a long distance relationship, I learned that we have to talk through everything even if I don’t want to because we won’t be able to solve any problem we have if we don’t. It took a while but I got used to it.

Being in a long distance relationship means that you don’t get to go out on dates so you have to be creative. We don’t go out on public places and Skype with each other while we’re dining out; ours was pretty simple. We both love watching movies so we would simply watch a movie together; special thanks to Skype’s “Desktop Share” functionality. Every weekend, we would decide what we want to watch and then he’d usually play it on his laptop; then he’d share his desktop with me so I could watch with him. He did this all the time because his internet is way too faster than mine. My internet would get interrupted here and there but we just kept at it and up to now, I still think of those virtual dates as the fun times that we did even if we were living too thousands of miles away from each other. MAR-APR 2017 Conscious Life Magazine

This is very important in any relationship that you’ll be in; and it’s even more important if you’re in a long distance relationship. You have to trust that the other person, even though thousands of miles away from you, loves you enough to not cheat on you and not do anything to ruin your relationship. For someone who has been in a lot of messy relationships like myself, it was really hard for me to trust someone, let alone someone whom I cannot be with every day. But believe me, if you’re with someone who’s worthy of your trust, you’ll just know it and trust will be earned easily. And I guess it really helped that both of us were in the same page and wanted a monogamous relationship.

I honestly believe that our long distance relationship worked out the way it did because it was meant to be. It may sound cliché but I think he is the one God has planned for me. I mean, seriously, we could have given our relationship everything we could to make it work but in the end, if it wasn’t meant to be, something’s bound to happen that will cause it to end even if we didn’t want it to. And that is why, I thank God every night before I go to bed for bringing him into my life. There was this one time when I was trying to find some files in his laptop and I came across a picture he had saved in there with a filename “MeantToBe”. I opened it and to my surprise, it was one of our pictures; it made my heart melt. Isn’t it funny that we were both thinking the same thing? Our relationship wasn’t perfect; we’ve had our ups and downs. To be honest, at some point either of us wanted to get out. But we made it work; and if we were able to do it, anyone who has the right attitude and mindset could too.

The internet loves making lists of things, from top 10 beaches you have to see, to the top 10 restaurants in your area. So, it is no surprise that there is a list of the top 10 reasons why people fall into something we all cannot escape: Debt. Some are obvious, some are a little more excusable and others are simply just ridiculous. Topping the list as the leading reason we are in debt begins, according to Bankrate.com, is reduced income/savings. Coming in second place is divorce, followed by poor money management, which takes the bronze. The list goes on to reveal unemployment, gambling, medical expenses, saving too little, no moneycommunication skills, banking on a windfall and finally, at a whopping number ten is, financial literacy. It is simply ridiculous that low levels of financial literacy is ranked in at number ten instead of lucky number one. It is no wonder that close to 70% of South African adults are in so much debt. It begs the question, if financial literacy was at the top of the list, would there be a list at all? There are glaring potholes in the South African education system, from primary school right through to tertiary education that does not include any sort of formal financial literacy. Money Savvy Kids (MSK) is that missing something that will Conscious Life Magazine MAR-APR 2017

complement your child’s education and give them the edge to more than make it in life.

MSK not only offers financial literacy courses but entrepreneurial courses, too. MSK is more than a product. It is a pathway to developing mind-sets that will ensure that South Africa’s children not only work their work out of poverty, but that they have the tools to stay out. There is no use in trying to solve our financial problems if we do not understand finances in the first place. Our lack of financial literacy in this country has bred a society that is constantly playing catch up with their finances, until now. MSK is changing the way in which financial literacy and entrepreneurial concepts are being taught. This curriculum promises to change your child’s money savvy outlook on life and, ultimately, have them going to see the top 10 beaches to visit, as opposed to spending their lives reading about it.

Buying insurance is about reducing the financial burden in the event of unexpected loss or damage. For example, homeowners’ building insurance will assume the risk of loss in case your home is damaged or destroyed, where household insurance will only cover your home contents. Policy holders often assume that the insurance product they have purchased covers them in any event and for everything that relates to the item they insured. However, that is not always the case as there are some common, little-known gaps many of us have in our insurance cover. Here are a few examples of insurance products where the gaps are often overlooked:

Building Insurance Building insurance can be tricky. It is important to speak to an insurance advisor and familiarise yourself with what exactly is covered by your policy, and more importantly, what is not. You might think your insurer would pay the full cost to replace the structure of your home if it were destroyed by a fire, for example. But many policies place a cap on replacement cost up to the face amount stated on the policy. It is important to review the replacement value every so often to be sure you have adequate insurance. Even if your policy states that “all perils” are covered, most policies carve out many exceptions or exclusions to this general provision. For example, your policy may limit how much and for how long it will pay for temporary housing while repairs are made. If you have renovated, it’s always a good idea to touch base with your insurance advisor to check if updates to your policy are needed. Another often-overlooked condition of building insurance is the residency. Did you know that if you move out of your house while you continue to own it, and then a fire starts or a vandal wreaks havoc, your insurance probably won’t kick in? As soon as you plan to move out, call your insurance advisor to switch to the right policy. MAR-APR 2017

Conscious Life Magazine

Motor insurance Which drivers and what vehicles are covered by your motor insurance? Most policies provide motor insurance for you and family members residing with you. But what about a child living in a university residence or in an off-campus apartment? If you and your spouse divorce, which motor policy insures your children who are living with each parent at different times during the year? It is essential to discuss these living arrangements with your insurance advisor to avoid any gaps in your motor insurance policy due to these changes. Other gaps could include limited to no cover for damaged batteries, tires, and shocks. Your policy may also limit the amount paid for a rental while your vehicle is being repaired.

Household insurance and High-Value Items A standard household insurance policy has limits to amounts you can claim. For people who own expensive and valuable items, their household insurance may not provide enough cover to repair or replace items such as jewellery, artwork, antiques and collectibles. Speak to your insurance advisor to ensure these items are covered by your policy. To avoid these and other possible gaps in your insurance policy, review your policy annually with your advisor. Policy terms and conditions are often overlooked, and you may not understand what’s covered until it’s time to file a claim. A face-to-face meeting is always best with the policy right there in front of both of you. Also, take heed of notices you may receive. While it looks like insurance jargon, it could actually be changing your insurance coverage significantly. Don’t rely on your own interpretations - seek an explanation from your advisor to be sure you’ve filled all the gaps.

Something Extraordinary Is Happening in the World, And Most People Haven’t Noticed By Gustavo Tanaka

Most of us haven’t quite realized there is something extraordinary happening. A few months ago, I freed myself from standard-procedure society. I broke the chains of fear that kept me locked up into the system. Since then, I see the world from a different perspective: the one that everything is going through change and that most of us are unaware of that. Why is the world changing? In this post, I’ll point out the eight reasons that lead me to believe it.

1. No one can stand the employment model any longer. We are reaching our limits. People working with big corporations can’t stand their jobs. The lack of purpose knocks on your door as if it came from inside you like a yell of despair. People want out. They want to drop everything. Take a look on how many people are willing to risk entrepreneurship, people leaving on sabbaticals, people with work-related depression, people in burnout.

2. The entrepreneurship model is also changing. Over the past few years, with the explosion of startups, thousands of entrepreneurs turned their garages into offices to bring their billion-dollar ideas to life. The vortex of entrepreneurship was to find an investor and get funded — to be funded was like winning the World Cup or the Super Bowl. MAR-APR 2017

Conscious Life Magazine

But what happens after you get funded? “Isn’t it absurd that we, 7 billion of us living in the same planet, have grown further apart from each other?” You get back to being an employee. You may have brought in people not sharing your dream, not in agreement with your purpose, and soon it’s all about the money. The financial end becomes the main driver of your business. People are suffering with it. Excellent startups began to tumble because the money-seeking model is endless. A new way to endeavor is needed. Good people are doing it already.

3. The rise of collaboration. Many people have figured out that it doesn’t make any sense to go on by yourself. Many people have awakened from the “each man for himself” mad mentality. Stop, take a step back, and think. Isn’t it absurd that we, 7 billion of us living in the same planet, have grown further apart from each other? What sense does it make to turn your back on the thousands, maybe millions, of people living around you in the same city? Every time it crosses my mind, I feel blue. Fortunately, things are changing. Sharing, collaborative economy concepts are being implemented, and it points towards a new direction. The direction of collaborating, of sharing, of helping, of togetherness. This is beautiful to watch. It touches me.

4. We are finally figuring out what the Internet is. The Internet is an incredibly spectacular thing, and only now — after so many years — we are understanding its power. With the Internet, the world is opened, the barriers fall, the separation ends, the togetherness starts, the collaboration explodes, the help emerges. Some nations saw true revolutions that used the Internet as the primary catalyst, such as the Arab Spring. Here in Brazil, we are just starting to make a better use out of this amazing tool. Internet is taking down mass control. The big media groups controlling news by how it suits best what they want the message to be and what they want us to read are no longer the sole owners of information. You go after what you want. You bond to whomever you want. You explore whatever you may want to. With the advent of the Internet, the small are no longer speechless. There is a voice. The anonymous become acknowledged. The world comes together. And then the system may fall. MAR-APR 2017 Conscious Life Magazine

5. The fall of exaggerated consumerism. For too long, we’ve been manipulated to consume as much as we possibly can, to buy every new product launched — the newest car, the latest iPhone, the top brands, lots of clothes, shoes, lots and lots and lots of pretty much anything we could our hands on. Going against the crowd, many people have understood that this is way off. Lowsumerism, slow life and slow food are a few types of action being taken as we speak, pointing out the contradiction of how absurdly we have come to organize ourselves.

“With the advent of the Internet, the small are no longer speechless. There is a voice. The anonymous become acknowledged. The world comes together. “ Fewer people are using cars. Fewer people are overspending. And more people are swapping clothes, buying used goods, sharing assets, cars, apartments, offices. We don’t need all of that they told us we needed. And this consciousness of new consumerism can take down any company living on the exaggerated end of it.

6. Healthy and organic eating. We were so crazy we even accepted eating anything! It only needed to taste good, and everything would be alright. We were so disconnected that companies started to practically poison our food, and we didn’t say anything! But then some people started waking up, enabling and strengthening healthy and organic eating. This is only going to get stronger. But what has this got to do with economy and work? Just about everything, I’d say. Food production is one of the basic fundamentals of our society. If we change our mindset, our eating habit and our way of consuming, corporations will have to respond and adapt to a new market. The small farmer is getting back to being relevant to the whole chain of production. People are even growing plants and seeds inside their homes as well. And that reshapes the whole economy.

MAR-APR 2017

Conscious Life Magazine

7. The awakening of spirituality. How many friends do you have who practice yoga? What about meditation? Now think back, 10 years ago. How many people did you know by then who practiced these activities? Spirituality, for too long, was for esoteric folks — those weird-like and mystic people. But fortunately, this is also changing. We’ve come to the edge of reason and rationality. We were able to realize that, with only our conscious mind, we can’t figure out everything that goes on here. There is something else going on, and I’m sure you want to get hold of that as well.

You want to understand how these things work — how life operates, what happens after death, what is this energy thing people talk about so much, what is quantum physics, how thoughts can be materialized and create our sense of reality, what is coincidence and synchronicity, why meditation works, how it’s possible to cure some ailments using nothing but bare hands, how those alternative therapies not always approved by regular medicine can actually work sometimes. Companies are providing meditation to their employees. Even schools are teaching the young how to meditate. Think about it.

8 . Un-schooling trends. Who created this teaching model? Who chose the classes you have to take? Who chose the lessons we learn in history classes? Why didn’t they teach us the truth about other ancient civilizations? Why should kids follow a certain set of rules? Why should they watch everything in silence? Why should they wear a uniform? What about taking a test to prove what you actually learned? We developed a model that perpetuates and replicates followers of the system, that breed people into ordinary human beings. Fortunately, a lot of people are working to rethink that though concepts such as un-schooling, hack-schooling and homeschooling. Maybe you’ve never thought of that and even may be in shock. But it’s happening. Silently, people are being woken up and are realizing how crazy it is to live in this society. Look at all these new actions and try to think everything we were taught so far is normal. I don’t think it is.

There is something extraordinary happening. Gustavo Tanaka  is a Brazilian author and entrepreneur, trying to create with my friends a new model, a new system and maybe helping to create a new economy.

BEAUTY WITHOUT CRUELTY Sentience: The word “sentience” means “one who has the faculty of sensation and perception”, meaning to have the ability to “feel” physically and emotionally. Animals are sentient beings, although they are presently legally classified in South Africa as “things” or moveable property and BWC believes that this archaic, unjust, legal status must be changed before any worthwhile protective legislation can be passed. This link provides scientific articles on sentience wrt several species and makes for interesting reading!

Animal Rights: Animals have natural rights which must be acknowledged in South African law; these include the right to freedom from unnaturally induced pain; the right to shelter; the right to nourishment; the right to indulge their natural instincts; the right to freedom of movement and most importantly, the right to exist. Animals have intrinsic worth and their value should not be based on their usefulness to humans. BWC supports the rights of animals and will work forcefully to obtain such rights on behalf of animals. Ethical living: Veganism is the only dietary option in keeping with the concept of animals having rights. Socalled free-range farming only offers temporary relief from suffering for farm animals by providing better living conditions, in comparison to the cruel battery system, but their births and deaths are as cruel and unacceptable as that of their factory farmed cousins! Living without cruelty should be the aim of all caring people and BWC aims to provide credible information to enable them to make informed lifestyle choices. Education: Humane education is the key to changing people’s attitudes towards animals; they have lives that are meaningful to them and although they may be different from humans, that does not mean they are inferior! All life is valuable and BWC promotes respect and consideration for all species, including invertebrates. By Dr Josh Axe The dangers of synthetic scents aren’t always evident, but we have the science to prove that everyone, regardless of age or health, needs to make avoiding fake fragrances a major priority. A National Academy of Sciences points out some vital facts: About 95 percent of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum (crude oil). They include benzene derivatives (carcinogenic), aldehydes, toluene and many other known toxic chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions. (1) Unfortunately, 30 years later, toxic ingredients continue turn up in products we use and breathe in on a daily basis. Some of the worst toxic ingredients used in lotions, shampoos, laundry detergents, cleaning products and so much more include synthetic scents, often listed as on labels as the elusive “fragrance. And many on the list are known or suspected endocrine disruptors, compounds that tinker with hormonal health that can trigger weight gain and even set you up for diseases decades down the line. MAR-APR 2017 Conscious Life Magazine

Avoiding the dangers of synthetic scents is crucial. It’s something I need you to share with your family and friends. When a company puts “fragrance” on the label, don’t be tricked. This is a catch-all term actually can stand for thousands of different ingredients (literally, at least 3,000). And when you use a product containing “fragrance” or “parfum,” all of those mysterious ingredients are absorbed right into your bloodstream. These ingredients are predominantly made from chemicals and are just outright toxic for your health in so many ways. While our allure with natural fragrances is baked into our DNA as a way to find food and mates, synthetic fragrances are completely unnecessary and are making us super sick in our modernday world. Sure, drawing fragrances from nature has a long history in religious ceremonies, burials and a way to increase libido. But in this article, we’re focusing on the man-made fragrances that started emerging in the late 1800s. The dangers of these synthetic scents not only include short-term symptoms like allergies and respiratory distress, but also headaches, dizziness, nausea and brain fog. We’ll get into other, less obvious side (but super serious) side effects in a bit. (2) This serves as evidence that regardless of your age or health status, it is imperative that you avoid fragrance chemicals.

What Are Synthetic Scents? Synthetic scents or “fragrance” represent an unidentified mixture of ingredients including carcinogens, allergens, respiratory irritants, endocrine disruptors, neurotoxic chemicals and environmental toxicants. These artificial scents can be found in all kinds of body care and cosmetic products, as well as air fresheners, cleaning materials and laundry detergents. According to the Campaign for Safer Cosmetics, hair products are especially problematic. More than 95 percent of shampoos, conditioners and styling products contain fragrance as an ingredient. (3) I’m sure you’ll agree that we all want our hair to smell good, but we could do without the use of toxic ingredients. Research conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found an average of 14 chemicals in 17 name brand fragrance products. But it doesn’t stop there — none of these chemicals were actually listed on the label. (4) In general, there at least 3,000 ingredients that could possibly be used to form a product’s scent. That’s according to the online “Transparency List” put out by the International Fragrance Association, an industry trade group. (5) I encourage to take a look at the following list, derived from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, to see just how many fragrance chemicals we’re possibly exposed to every day. MAR-APR 2017

It may seem unbelievable, but the FDA does not even currently require fragrance and cosmetic makers to disclose exactly what they are using to scent products. If companies are using truly natural ingredients, then why be shy? Many will say that their formulas are proprietary and they don’t want other companies copying them. The FDA website also states how the agency cannot legally require companies to warn about allergens in cosmetic like they do with food. (6) Are you wondering why companies would continue to use synthetic scents if they’re so bad for our health? The answer is straightforward — they are cheaper. Synthetic scents can be an extremely cheap way to give everything from shampoo to lotion to candles a desirable scent. Unfortunately, just because you enjoy a scent, doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

Fake Fragrances: Making People’s Lives Miserable In an August 2016 study published by veteran fragrance chemical researcher Anne Steinemann, PhD, we see the scope of how scented products impact our daily lives. But here’s a positive stat from the study: She found that more than 50 percent of the population would prefer fragrance-free workplaces, health care facilities and professionals, hotels and airplanes. Overall reported health problems after exposure to fake fragrance: Overall, 34 percent of the population reported one or more types of adverse health effects from exposure to fragranced products. 

The most common symptoms were: 18 percent respiratory problems; 16 percent mucosal symptoms; 15 percent migraine headaches; 10 percent skin problems; 8 percent asthma attacks; 7 percent neurological problems; 5 percent cognitive problems; 5 percent gastrointestinal problems; 4 percent cardiovascular problems; 4 percent immune system problems; 3 percent musculoskeletal problems; and 1 percent “other.”

MAR-APR 2017

Scented laundry products vented outdoors: 12 percent reported health problems from the scent of laundry products coming from a dryer vent. Symptoms include headaches, breathing difficulties and other health problems. Proximity to fragranced person: 23 percent reported health problems from being near someone who is wearing a fragranced product. Trouble in public places: 17 percent of people say they are unable or reluctant to use public toilets because of air freshener, deodorizer or scented product; 14 percent are unable or reluctant to their wash hands with soap in a public place because they suspect the soap is fragranced. Further, 22.7 percent have been prevented from going to some public place because of scented products. Economic losses: Fragranced product exposures have economic implications, too. Of those surveyed, 20 percent would enter but then leave a business as quickly as possible if they smell fragranced products, and 15 have lost workdays or a job due to fragranced product exposures in the workplace

Serious Dangers of Synthetic Scents Cancer According to the Breast Cancer Fund, when it comes to the prevention of cancer, avoiding synthetic fragrance is one of the main ways to help yourself. That’s because the dangers of synthetic scents include hormone-disrupting phthalates and synthetic musks. (7) The National Academy of Sciences endorsed the 2011 finding by the National Toxicology Program, a collaboration of scientists from several government agencies, that styrene is “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen” based on “compelling evidence.” The organization also said that some studies would support “a strong argument [for] listing styrene as a known human carcinogen.” (Their italics, not mine).

MAR-APR 2017

Conscious Life Magazine

Styrene is found in cigarette smoke and car exhaust. Doesn’t sound like it would smell too good, but shockingly, it’s actually being used in cosmetic sprays and liquids as well as cleaning products. According to the EWG, if a company doesn’t fully disclose that it contains styrene (which it most likely will not) then the only way you’ll know it’s present is if you use a gas chromatograph or mass spectrometer. (8) Sadly, styrene is just one of many ingredients linked to cancer being used to create artificial fragrance. Phthalates are another group of chemicals often disguised as “fragrance.” They are connected to cancer, endocrine disruption as well as developmental and reproductive toxicity. These dangerous synthetics are already banned from cosmetics in the European Union, but are still quite common in products produced and sold in the United States. Phthalates often hide under the “fragrance” ingredient, but they can also appear on ingredient lists as phthalate, DEP, DBP, and DEHP. Be sure to avoid all of those. (9)

Child Autism & Other Birth Defects Most products that list “fragrance” contain a very unwanted ingredient when it comes to good health. I’m talking about phthalates, again. Research conducted by Dr. Philip J. Landrigan of the Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center demonstrates that fetal exposure to phthalates is linked to autism, symptoms of ADHD and neurological disorders. This why pregnant women have to be ultra careful when it comes to the products they’re exposed to on a daily basis. The dangers of synthetic scents could be even more lifealtering for a developing fetus.

A 2010 New York Times article quoted Dr. Landrigan on the subject. He said that he is “increasingly confident that autism and other ailments are, in part, the result of the impact of environmental chemicals on the brain as it is being formed.” He adds, “the crux of this is brain development. If babies are exposed in the womb or shortly after birth to chemicals that interfere with brain development, the consequences last a lifetime.” (10) A very interesting 2010 peer-reviewed study published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that women with higher levels of certain phthalates gave birth to children that, years later, were more likely to display disruptive behavior. (11) It’s alarmingly true that fragrance materials are able to accumulate in human fat tissue. They are also present in breast milk. (12)

Allergic & Toxic Bodily Reactions Fragrances are one of the top five allergens in the world. (13) Allergic reactions include headaches and migraines, difficulty breathing and sinus irritation, just to name a few. Fragrance mixtures also commonly trigger contact dermatitis, a type of allergic skin reaction. (14) In recent years, health reports show that allergies, sinus problems, migraines and asthma have all increased dramatically. Many experts believe there’s a likely link between the rise in these conditions and the increased use of products containing fragrance. (15) Using animal models, a 1998 study published in Archives of Environmental Health looked at how fragrance products produce toxic effects in mammals. They found that the emissions of fragrance products caused various combinations of: eyes, nose and throat irritations; pulmonary irritation; decreases in airflow velocity when exhaling; and signs of neurotoxicity. This neurotoxicity was even worse when the animal subjects suffered repeated exposure to the scented products. (16) MAR-APR 2017 Conscious Life Magazine

Asthma & Other Breathing Difficulties

 

If you have asthma, you really don’t need anything to get in the way of breathing easily. It’s extremely common for asthmatics to suffer health symptoms when exposed to perfumes, colognes and other scented products, especially when they contain artificial scents. One study looked at patients with a history of worsening asthma symptoms after being exposed to cologne. They found that the patients’ exhalation volume decline by 18 to 58 percent during cologne exposure. (17) There’s no doubt in my mind that synthetic scents are enemies of optimal breathing, especially if you have breathing issues to begin with, like asthmatics. If you have asthma or any other breathing trouble, then truly fragrance-free products are your best bet.

Better Alternatives to Dangerous Synthetic Scents

 

The good news is that if you are a careful reader, you can help yourself and your family to avoid the dangers of synthetic scents in all of the products you buy and use. There are also many better options and ways to avoid the dangers of synthetic scents including: 

Just live with fewer fragrances in your life. One easy solution to freshen your air? Put a bowl of white vinegar your countertop or windowsill to aid in natural odor control. Be sure to focus on cleaning up the source of odor, though, too — not just covering up the foul smell.

Completely avoiding any product that lists fragrance, parfum, phthalate, DEP, DBP, or DEHP as an ingredient. Look for products that use essential oils when you are looking for a scent. Buying certified organic products, which are less likely to include artificial scents (but still read labels). Watch out for “limonene” or “linalool” on labels, too. To provide a fresh, natural scent to your home or office, use fresh cut herbs and flowers and potted plants. Studies have even shown that the best houseplants that remove pollution help strip indoor air of some toxic compounds. Make homemade cleaning products since they are another huge source of synthetic scents. Buy laundry detergent that is scented with pure essential oils or that is fragrance-free. You can also make your own homemade laundry soap. If you are super sensitive or just don’t want to deal with smelling anything at all then choose fragrance-free or unscented products. Just make sure to still read labels carefully because sometimes companies will use other questionable ingredients to create that lack of a scent. If you want to burn an occasional candle, use beeswax with a lead-free wick. But understand that any type of combustion will cause some level of particulate pollution in the home. (But at least you won’t get the toxic fragrance or petroleum chemicals.) Question companies that don’t fully explain how their products are scented. Maybe you’ll get some additional information or at best, get them to think again before not fully informing their customers. Share the stats in this article with your employer and favorite businesses. Let them know about the economic harms of allowing fragrances in public and work spaces. MAR-APR 2017 Conscious Life Magazine

High quality, 100 percent pure essential oils are not cheap like synthetic scents, but for good reason. Essential oils are extremely concentrated. It takes a 1,000 pounds of handpicked flowers from an orange tree to produce the neroli essential oil, which has an incredible floral and citrusy intoxicating scent. Neroli is just one of many awesome options when it comes to essential oils. Also, make sure to avoid synthetic scents with pet products, since the dangers of synthetic scents can be similar for animals.

Final Thoughts on the Dangers of Synthetic Scents I really want to emphasize how important it is that you and your loved ones avoid the dangers of synthetic scents as much as possible. I also want to remind you again about what’s so much better than those fake smells — essentials oils. With so many scents to choose from and combine, the options for lovely natural scents are practically endless. They even make plug-ins now that use essential oils. Interestingly, people who are heavy users of fake fragrances seem to build up a tolerance to them. But as you give up the dangers of synthetic scents, you’ll likely become less tolerant of them. So many people tell me that after they detox from chemical fragrances, they often feel sick when they walk down the detergent aisle or body spray sections of stores. One of the best ways to protect your overall health is to choose products that are truly free of fragrance or ones that fully disclose a natural fragrance ingredients. Pregnant and breastfeeding moms should be especially careful for the sake of themselves as well as their developing children. You really have to read labels to know what you’re getting these days when it comes to everything, especially any scented product. If you have asthma or breathing problems and are currently using synthetic scents, you are very likely to notice a big difference when you remove these fake fragrances from your life. Some of the other health effects might be less obvious, but the science is there to demonstrate how the more you cut out the dangers of synthetic scents from your life, the more you can hopefully decrease your chances of some serious and chronic health problems. So toss those synthetic scents in the trash immediately and go smell a flower and remember how the best scents are truly all around us in nature, and bottled in essential oils too.

Why this local herb should be on your medicine shelf Buchu has been used as a herbal remedy for more than 3000 years. Why? What are the health benefits of buchu, and what does modern research reveal about this well-loved local plant? What is buchu? One of our best-known medicinal plants, buchu (Agathosma betulina) is native to south-western South Africa, where indigenous people have used its leaves for more than 3000 years as an antiseptic and to treat urinary disorders. The leaves have a minty, camphor-like, berryand fruit-like fragrance, and a green herbal taste, inspiring the early European settlers, with their fondness for a new tipple, to make a brandy to use as a digestive tonic. Buchu – its name stems from the Khoi word for the plant, bookoo – was first documented in 1652; some 140 years later it was exported to Britain, where it was listed in the British Pharmacopoeia as a medicine for ‘cystitis, urethritis, nephritis and catarrh of the bladder’.

DID YOU KNOW? Every year, 10,000 South Africans die of kidney disease or kidney failure, and thousands more are affected by one or another kidney ailment. All of these conditions require early detection, and many can be prevented with a combination of wise eating and healthy lifestyle. MAR-APR 2017

Conscious Life Magazine

The health benefits of buchu Modern science has yet to confirm empirically the health benefits of buchu, but studies are showing some positive results. The plant’s active ingredients have been identified as the volatile oils diosphenol, camphor and isomenthone, and disease-preventing flavonoids such as rutin, hesperidin, diosmin and quercetin. Minerals such as nitrogen, phosphorus, sodium, manganese, selenium and boron have also been isolated, as have vitamins A, B, C and E. So buchu is clearly a plant of some nutritious and medicinal value. However, while it may not deliver on the Khoisan belief that it was an elixir of youth, buchu is now used worldwide as: • •

• •

• • •

A tonic that promotes general wellbeing, helping your body to resist infection. A natural diuretic that can be used as to treat stomach ailments and to fight inflammation, kidney and urinary tract infections such as cystitis. Buchu’s primary volatile oil, disphenol, is thought to contain the principal urinary tract antiseptic. It also reduces urinary gravel (linked with kidney stones) and bladder catarrh. A treatment for prostate infections responsible for increased urination. An anti-inflammatory that helps ease the aches and pains associated with gout, arthritis and rheumatism. The natural anti-inflammatory action also prevents the onset of inflammation, speeds up muscle recovery and soothes muscle and joint pain – and that’s good news for cyclists ahead of the Argus Cycle Tour on Sunday 12 March. A tonic to ease premenstrual cramping and bloating in women. Buchu may reduce high cholesterol and hypertension, and help if you’ve over-indulged in food and alcohol. Buchu has diuretic properties (it makes you urinate more often), so it may even help you lose weight.

Side-effects Always talk to your medical practitioner before taking any herbal supplements. Check the packaging to ensure that the product contains Agathosma betulina and not A. crenulata. Buchu is mild with few side effects, although it may cause an upset stomach and should be taken with meals. It is well suited for use by children and the elderly. As the plant is a diuretic, it depletes potassium stores in the body, so when taking buchu, supplement your diet with bananas or other potassium-rich foods. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or if you have acute urinary inflammation.

Where to get buchu You’ll find Buchu tea in many health shops and retail chains. It is an acquired taste though, so if you’re not a fan of the tea, Flora Force Buchu capsules is an all-natural, unadulterated product containing 100% Agathosma betulina. Get yours online at Faithful To Nature.

10 SUPERFOODS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR DIET Posted in Nutrition By Shannon Looking to boost the nutritional content of your diet plan? If so, look no further than to what are called ‘superfoods’ – foods that contain an extra dose of nutrition over others. These foods help boost energy, prevent disease, and ensure that you become the healthiest that you can be. If you’re not including them in your regular diet plan, you’re making a grave mistake. This said, let’s take a look at 10 superfoods to start eating more often. BLUEBERRIES Often called the ‘brain berry’, this superfood is excellent for boosting your mental energy, focus, memory, and for improving concentration as well. Blueberries are low in calories and high in fiber, making them a must-have.

SALMON Of all the protein sources you could eat, salmon may just be the best. Rich in high quality amino acids, this fish variety is also loaded with important omega-3 fatty acids, which will help fend off diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Serve it up twice per week at minimum for optimal benefits.

BROCCOLI Broccoli is a highly versatile vegetable as you can steam it, stir-fry it, bake it, or simply eat it raw alone or in salads and packs a load of nutrients. Broccoli is especially high in phytonutrients, which will help to combat oxidation that leads to cancer.

KALE Along with broccoli, make sure you don’t let kale pass by you. This highly nutrient dense vegetable works great in salads or cooked in a stir-fry as well and is very rich in iron, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and a number of other nutrients. It’s one of the best cancer fighting vegetables out there, so definitely deserves a place in your diet plan.

CINNAMON If you are looking to control blood glucose levels in order to fend off diabetes, cinnamon should be your go-to. This spice is calorie free and adds a hint of sweetness to foods, reducing the likelihood that you need to add unwanted sugar. It also helps to stabilize blood glucose levels when consumed, so make sure that you serve it up with the carbohydrates you eat whenever possible.

QUINOA Moving along, quinoa is the next great grain to be eating in your diet. This grain is a complete source of protein, which cannot be said for all the other grains that you could consume. It’s also high in fiber, low in sugar, and low on the GI index. Ideal for ongoing energy throughout the day.

COCONUT OIL There are few foods you could consume that are as versatile as coconut oil. Used in a number of cooking dishes as well as used as a hair conditioner, skin moisturizer, way to heal sunburns, and many more, you simply can’t go wrong with coconut oil. As a food source, it strengthens your immune system, boosts your heart-health, improves your skin, boosts your metabolic rate, and provides a quick source of energy like that of carbohydrates. It’s the only fat to do this, so if you are on a lower carb diet, it’s a must-have.

ALMONDS Almonds are another great healthy fat source to include in your diet plan. They’re rich in protein, fiber, and healthy cholesterol-lowering fats and will also pack in a good dose of calcium, vitamin E, and magnesium to your day. This will help keep your bones strong and your muscular energy high.

BEANS Even if you aren’t vegetarian, make sure that you are making good use of beans in your diet on a regular basis. They’re an excellent alternative to grains as they are high fiber, high carb, and also contain a good dose of protein as well. The fiber in beans can help to lower cholesterol levels significantly, so should be a mainstay for anyone concerned with heart health.

FLAXSEEDS Finally, don’t forget flaxseeds. Ground flaxseeds are superfood thanks to their high fiber, high omega-3 fatty acids, and high protein levels. If you want to master hunger, flaxseeds are a great choice. Most people are currently not getting enough omega-3 fatty acids into their day, so flaxseeds can make it easier to meet your requirements. This fatty acid is key for improving your overall health profile as well as mental health.

So have a look at your current diet. Are you missing out on these 10 Superfoods?

GETTING TO KNOW ROSS LEARMONTH FROM PRIME CIRCLE How old were you when you found your calling to be a musician? I was 16 or 17 when I heard a few friends playing in a band and I was hooked. Who inspired or influenced your love of music? I was a massive fan of Silverchair, Nirvana, and with a group of friends that shared the same interest as me, so we all inspired each other to listen and eventually play. How did you handle the nerves when you first went on stage and do you still get nervous? The nerves were almost overwhelming but it was also exhilarating, the band getting together before the show, talking through what we had rehearsed over and over again, it was amazing and I will never forget that feeling. It still stays with me to this day. Did you expect this extent of fame when you did your first gig? No, but we always dreamed about being a touring band, we used to say “Imagine someone wearing our band shirt and being able to travel the world playing music, it felt like something so out of reach to us. What was the biggest challenge you faced along the way and how did you overcome it? Signing the wrong contracts with the wrong people which nearly ended the band financially a few times, but we soldiered on and didn't let it take us down. Do you have a particular cause or charity which is close to your heart, or that you support Paws r us is very close to my heart, I love all animals and am a huge dog lover, besides that we are going to be launching our Rage Against the Plastics where we will try and use less disposable plastic in our day to day lives and shows, and trying to spread the message to venues and supporters where ever we go. You can't get away from disposable plastic but you can limit your use. You are a strong advocate for SA Music, which we can completely agree with as we have huge amounts of local talent. What are your dreams for our local industry and how can we all help to lift this industry up? I hope to see more SA bands touring internationally and see a lot more artists charting internationally too, the way to help is to support the scene, go to shows, but don't copy the music and we will see bands and artists progress and evolve into bigger and better artists. Where do you get your inspiration from when writing your songs? I am a song writer so the act itself can inspire me, I look around at my environment for inspiration for the subject. What are your guilty pleasures? How do you relax, do you have any special treats for yourself? Like pigging out on chocolate or going fishing? I can be quite the couch potato, I love doing nothing sometimes just watching movies and pigging out. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Do you have any hobbies? Do you watch or play any sport? I am a terrible golfer but I enjoy it, I love to sketch and I love a good pint with friends. What talents do you have besides your music? I tell a mean ghost story, I have also started a company helping with people's concepts and filming, I enjoy finding creative solutions to problems. Were you a ‘normal’ student or did you drive your teachers mad? Drove them mad, I was terrible at school. 4 items on your bucket list? Master the piano Travel more Sky dive Rail slide with a snow board What are you currently reading and what are your 4 favourite books? Not reading anything at the moment. Top books are anything written by Douglas Adams Favourite SA Bands? I am a big fan of AKing, Ard Mathews and Just Jinger, PHAT to name a few…. Who would you LOVE to perform on stage with? We've always wanted to perform with the Foo Fighters, that would be amazing. Plans for the future – where do you see yourself 15 years from now? We don't really think that far, right now just working on a new album, we are looking to release end of July and then tour locally and in Europe. We are excited for the future and can't wait to tour a new album. In closing, what advice do you have for striving musicians? Do it because you love it, fame and fortune are not the main reasons for being a musician, and make sure you stand by what you do and have a good time because in the end you got to love it! THANK YOU ROSS – KEEP ROCKING THE PLANET! MAR-APR 2017

Breathing is the debut single off the band's 4th album, Jekyll & Hyde. To date, the first single “She Always Gets What She Wants” has received over 789 000 YouTube hits the most-viewed South African rock song ever. “Jekyll & Hyde”, unleashed in 2010, was mixed in Los Angeles by Kevin Shirley. New York-based Sterling Sound mastering engineer George Marino laid the final touches. In May 2014, Prime Circle released their 6th album, ‘Let The Night In’ before embarking on one of their biggest European and South African tours. Says Ross Learmonth, “Without the fans, we would be nothing. And I don’t ever want to do anything else. What is Colour Therapy Everyone has a relationship to colour, and is affected by it, as it is intimately tied to our entire lives. By Penni – Divine Space As we gaze at objects around us, we first perceive the colour of an object, and then the form. Our responses to the colours are varied, as we are attracted to some and reject others. We use colours to describe how we are feeling all the time. Take time to think of how we use it in our vocabulary, i.e. She has the blues today; like a red rag to a bull or being green with envy. These sayings tell us a lot about the healing potential within the colour. Light creates colour and form and is produced by the sun in different wavelengths. When these light waves bounce off different objects, they create the sensation of light. This means that everything we see is reflected light. Low frequency light waves register in our brains as the colour red, whereas higher frequency wavelengths are perceived as the colour violet. Because the molecular structure and pigmentation of objects vary, the light rays become mixed and absorbed, and reflect in varying speeds and intensity. Objects that appear dark to us have absorbed more of the light rays – and therefore don’t reflect as much of the light. Lighter objects obviously reflect more light, and seem brighter. This means that when light is broken down, either reflected or absorbed into different wavelengths, we see it as the different shades and colours of the rainbow.

How Does Colour relate to Humans? True healing is only complete when the initial cause of a condition or illness is addressed and transformed. In most cases, emotional pain or trauma of some sort which is ignored, eventually manifests as a physical ailment. This is the bodies way of forcing us to slow down and take note of what is going on in our lives. Most allopathic healing only looks at the physical imbalance. I believe that if the root cause is not addressed, then that which brought about the need for healing in the first place will resurface and manifest itself within the body in one form or another – time and again.

How does colour therapy help this? The use of colour therapy creates subtle energy stimuli that interacts with the energy system of the human body and helps to stabilize it on many different levels. By providing the correct focus of energy or colour to the affected area, it begins to correct the balance. Once balance is restored, we can more effectively rid ourselves of toxins and negative patterns that inhibit our lives. Not only is it effective in healing but also in stimulating deeper levels of consciousness.

Which colour to choose? There is an extensive range of products that will help you attain this balance, with options within each colour section or path (click on the ‘COLOUR THERAPY’ section on the home page). This is because we are all individuals and each one of us will need a different level of integration or support. Step one is to click on a colour that attracts you – then… either do the left brain thing – reading and analyzing each item to find which suits your needs best. Or try to see what happens if you look at the images of the different bottles, and see which makes you tingle or gives you a YES feeling in your tummy, heart or third eye. It is always interesting to see what comes up when we get our heads out of the way and allow us to be guided by our intuition.

Deeper level of Support We offer one on one sessions or run courses that teach you how to do deeply insightful 9 bottle Colour Readings. The client is taken through a brief relaxation processes and is then supported in choosing their colours. Each colour represents a different part of their life. The higher self is present during the selection and it is always fascinating to see what they are ready to deal with at the time. This counseling session assists them in identifying both their strengths / talents and obstacles in life. Awareness is the first step, then using one or two of the colours to assist in overcoming the blockages, together with a change in thoughts or behaviour eases their journey through life. If you would like to find out more – please book a session or join us on one of the Magic of Colour workshops. I look forward to supporting your journey in any way that I can. Penni

A Prayer For Africa – by Margi McAlpine (Channelled through Lord Serapis Bey) I feel my feet firmly on the ground. I see beautiful golden roots growing out of the soles of my feet anchoring and grounding me to the wonderful energies of the African soil. I ask Archangels Michael and Metatron to place their protective cloaks around me and the Continent of Africa. I call in all the Beings of Light who are working with me and through me to clear and heal the Continent of Africa, especially Archangel Metatron and Lord Serapis Bey. I visualise myself facing North. I give thanks that the prayers and light I send will move upwards reaching the next light worker like a bridge. In this way the whole of the African Continent will be lit up with amazing bridges of light. I see the ancient Ley Lines under the earth. Once they carried light and energy, now they are filled with darkness and fear. I send light into each and every one of them pushing out the darkness. I thank the Angels and Beings of Light for bringing in the Golden, Silver, Violet Flame to assist with this. These important lines are now energised and full of light. (take your time to see them being cleared and lit up) I concentrate my energies on the grids in the etheric around the Continent. Once bearers of light, these grids now hold the fear of Africa around the Continent like a vice. I thank the Angels and Beings of Light as they bring in the Golden, Silver, Violet Flame to clear the debris by filling them with light and love. The grids are once more Beacons of Light holding the Continent in unconditional love. (take your time to see them being cleared and lit up) I call on the Mighty Archangel Metatron, the Archangel of Africa to enlighten and awaken the Continent enabling healing to take place and the ancient wisdom and teachings to be returned. Thank you for the healing of all her people, especially the children and elderly and those who have been traumatised by violence, war, poverty and disease. Thank you for the healing of Nature, including all the animals, birds, insects, sea creatures, the land, the waters, plants and trees. Thank you that Africa is flourishing under just leaders who work with integrity. I give thanks for being an African either by birth or circumstance because Africa is the Cradle of Mankind and will lead the way into the light and I am privileged to be a part of this movement. I put the whole of the African Continent in a beautiful white bubble of protective light and unconditional love and entrust it to Archangel Metatron. “I give thanks today For my journey forward To stand in my Highest Power To be of Divine Service “ (Reshmi Singh) GOD BLESS AFRICA !!

This DIY mason bee house is my attempt at attracting more pollinators to my yard and providing them a save place to feed and reproduce. I had never heard the term ‘mason bee’ before, but once I checked them out on Wikipedia I knew what they were. They are named from their habit of making compartments of mud in their nests, which are made in hollow reeds or holes in wood made by an assortment of bugs. Basically, instead of hives, like traditional honey bees, mason bees lay their eggs in hollow twigs. This DIY mason bee house was incredibly simple to make with one upcycled tin can and a ton of bamboo we had tossed into the weed pile. If you don’t have bamboo or any hollow reeds (some dried flower stalks work!), you can use rolled up paper. Just sit your kids down with a pile of scrap paper and roll it up to form ‘straw like’ structures. Tuck those inside the can. Once your DIY mason bee house is done, hang it in your garden or wherever you want your pollinators to hang out. I poked a hole in this bee house with a nail so I could string some twine through it and hang it on the fence post. You don’t even have to paint the can like I did but I thought it looked pretty and maybe the bright color would attract more mason bees.

DIY Mason Bee House Supplies: • 1 empty tin can, label removed and washed. • spray paint in your desired color (optional) • rolls of scrap paper, hollow bamboo stalks, or hollow reeds to put inside • Nail and hammer to make a hole in the can • Twine to hang your DIY mason bee house Instructions: • Make your rolls of paper or cut your stalks of bamboo/hollow reeds to whatever length is needed to fit the can • Using a thick nail and hammer, make a hole in the bottom of the can to thread the twine through • Paint the tin can if desired • Thread the twine through the hole and knot the end • Add the hollow structures inside the can, packing as tightly as possible • Hang your mason bee house wherever you want your bees to hang out. DIY SOLAR LIGHTS Materials • • •

mason jars with rings stake solar light double sided foam tape or glue

Directions 

The most challenging this project will ever get is finding the solar lights that have removable tops and the pretty mason jars to fit them. This took me all of 10 minutes. I bought the lights at a grocery store for very little and have a large collection of jars that I sorted through until I found the right ones.

By Stephanie Rose • •

As the solar light was a bit smaller than the mason jar ring, I used a piece of double sided foam tape to make it just a smidge wider and it fit inside perfectly. Don’t remove the paper off the other side of the tape so that the light can be removed from the jar. There is often an on/off switch on the light that you will still want to access. Alternatively, glue the light to the top inside of the ring to make a solid cap that can be removed. Set out in the sun for 4-8 hours and your new jars will light up the night. I particularly love the reflection of the label on the wood below.

A brief overview of the advantages and disadvantages which need to be considered when deciding whether to build or buy.

MAR-APR 2017

Conscious Life Magazine

Buying an Existing Home Advantages: • • • • • •

From a security point of view, (and also from an insurance premium point of view), it is less likely that there are vacant stands which surround the property. Established neighbourhoods generally have the necessary major arterial routes and amenities, including a central business district, public transport, schools, shopping centres, and so on. It may be easier to obtain objective opinions in terms of current and future property values in an established area. The average land area, total building area and the average size per room of older properties is generally larger than that of new residential stands available or newly built homes. One can obtain expert advice on existing structures if there is uncertainty about the structural aspects. Defects and poor workmanship can be inspected for quality. If the property is bought at a reasonable price, it could be cost effective to renovate giving it a fresh and modern feel.

Disadvantages: • • • •

Deteriorating properties in the vicinity may have a negative effect on the property value. Older properties are sold ‘voetstoets’ without a warranty. The design, layout and finishes may not be in line with your personal taste or the latest fashion trends, and renovating may be too costly. Defects may be invisible at the time of viewing, and could end up costing you a lot of time and money in repairs.

MAR-APR 2017

Conscious Life Magazine

Buying a New Home Advantages: • •

• • •

When buying from a developer, VAT is normally included in the price. There is no additional transfer duty to be paid on top of the purchase price. You have a 5-year major structural defect warranty as well as a 1-year roof leak warranty from a building contractor registered with the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC). Properties in your immediate area are usually also new and still well maintained, modern, and so on, and this will have a positive effect on the increasing value of your new home. You are generally able to choose the design, layout, finishes and everything else to your needs and preference and in line with the current fashion trends. The initial maintenance cost is low.

Disadvantages: • •

• • • • • • •

New developments and vacant stands are mainly on the outskirts of major urban areas, which may be a disadvantage in terms of security and accessibility to necessary major arterial routes and amenities. The future development of major arterial routes may add to noise and other pollution and the development of low-cost housing or the formation of informal settlements on vacant land in the near vicinity may cause property values to stagnate or even decline. You cannot be sure about your privacy if your neighbours have not yet built their homes around you. Major additional expenses for an architect or engineer, land preparation or excavation with unforeseen ground formations, and so on, may need to be taken into account. There may be uncertainty about the quality of workmanship and material to be used. The building project may take longer to complete than anticipated, which will create problems for you in terms of an occupation date. Stand sizes are generally smaller than those in established older areas. Relatively small stand sizes. You need to keep your eyes on the project to ensure that what you had in mind from the start, is what the project turns out to be – this can become time consuming and put pressure on other daily responsibilities you may have. by Juan du Toit We decided to start a WATER WISE CAMPAIGN with advice and tips on how to save water, seeing as water has become a scarce resource in SA and we need to use it sparingly. We made a list of 12 WATER SAVING TIPS to take care of your lawn during this dry spell  Remove no more than 1/3 the height of the grass for any one mowing. Keeping the grass slightly higher will increase shade on the soil, encourage deeper rooting and reduce evaporation. The added height shades the ground, slowing evaporation. Mowing shorter not only provides less protection for the ground, but it also allows quicker uptakes of water into the atmosphere.  Mow in the morning or early evening and not midday - to avoid burning grass.  Try mulching, even if you do not have a mulching mower. Let clippings remain on the lawn. Lawns tend to lose more water and nutrients through evaporation when clippings are removed.  Water thoroughly but infrequently to encourage deeper rooting, increase soil moisture reservoir and to reduce the number of weeds. Letting the grass be "thirsty" encourages deeper rooting.  Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation; it can reduce water usage up to 40%.  Fertilise only twice a year; mid-October and late February. Always use a slow release organic fertiliser. Lush lawns look great, but heavily fertilised lawns use more water and are more susceptible to drought stress.  Water only every 5 - 7 days (if no rain). A soaking rain can extend that period up to 10 -14 days. Most people apply double the amount of water needed.  Do not water lawn on windy days; it increases transpiration and evaporation rates.  If you did not aerate your lawn in spring, consider doing so in the fall. Aeration creates small holes in the ground that allow water to soak deeper into the ground and help promote root growth.  If possible, use soak irrigation lines instead of pop-up heads. These can reduce water consumption up to 60%. If using pop-up heads, align heads to avoid paved surfaces or other non-targeted objects. Regularly check for leaks and install a rain gauge to prevent activation of the system during and just after a rainfall.  Increase organic matter; while this comes naturally to most organic gardeners, many don't realise the benefits of building humus in the soil. Organic matter absorbs many times its weight in water, which is then available for plant growth. It provides many advantages: clay soils with added organic matter will accept water more quickly, and organically amended sandy soils hold water longer and don't need to be watered as frequently. One of the easiest ways to build organic matter is to add Grass Factory & Eco Organic Compost that breaks down to humus. This has an incredible potential to hold moisture, nutrients and build soil health.  Keep the lawn mower blade sharp to make cleaner cuts that cause less water loss than cuts from dull mower blades.

At first glance the latter might appear to be unrelated to Buddhism but even these retreats will contain some element of meditation, of mindful awareness, refracting the chosen subject matter through a Buddhist lens. People from all walks of life come to these retreats with a variety of motivations and expectations. Perhaps they want to deepen their meditation practice, to take some time out from a hectic working life; to reflect on a tense domestic situation; to consider the trajectory of their lives; to make a decision about a way forward. Maybe they just want to learn how to take a good photograph. Each person will have a different reason for going on a retreat. Different paths will have led them to this place. We all need to make an appointment with ourselves from time to time. To re-connect with who we are; to maintain balance; to recharge exhausted batteries. To make time to go on a retreat is a necessary and healthy step for anyone.

General Information The Centre has been established on an exquisite 125-hectare country estate near the village of Ixopo, KwaZuluNatal 90 kilometers south of Pietermaritzburg, one and a half hours’ drive from Durban. Set in hilly grasslands amongst dams, indigenous bush and forests, it overlooks one of the great valleys in the Umkomaas river system. CNN featured the BRC as one of the ten finest retreat centres in the world. It was awarded Natural Heritage status by President Nelson Mandela in recognition of its success in establishing indigenous vegetation on the property and providing habitats for wildlife to return, including the endangered Blue Swallow. It is a birder’s paradise with more 160 species recorded.

Walks lead to many interesting sites and viewpoints on the property, including evidence that Bushman lived there and Voortrekkers and Settlers passed through. In 2000, the BRC facilitated the founding of Woza Moya, the community-based NGO, located in Ufafa valley. It continues to support the organisation in a variety of ways.

Cats Eating Dry Food Have Increased Risk for Developing Type 2 Diabetes Some cat owners have advocated not feeding dry food to cats for health reasons, and now science may back those claims up. A recent study conducted by researchers at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences found an increased risk of diabetes mellitus (Type 2) in normalweight cats that consume a dry food diet. The study, “Environmental Risk Factors for Diabetes Mellitus in Cats,” was published online December 1, 2016, and will be included in the January/February digital issue of the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine (JVIM), a publication of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). “Through our research we found that while obesity is a very important and prominent risk factor for diabetes mellitus in cats, there is also an increased risk of diabetes among normalweight cats consuming a dry food diet,” said Malin Öhlund, DVM, a Ph.D student of the department of Clinical Services at the Swedish University of Agricultural Science and lead MAR-APR 2017 Conscious Life Magazine

researcher on the study. “This correlation, compared to normal-weight cats on a wet food diet, is a new and interesting finding that warrants further research, as a dry food diet is commonly fed to cats around the world.” This study investigated both new and known risk factors associated with diabetes mellitus in cats. In addition to an increased risk among normal-weight cats on a dry food diet, the study also found that indoor confinement and inactivity, being a greedy eater and being overweight were also associated with an increased risk of diabetes mellitus in cats. “Environmental Risk Factors for Diabetes Mellitus in Cats” is the largest case-control study about diabetic cats to date. The web-based survey, which was conducted over a four-month period, evaluated 2,066 cats—396 with diabetes mellitus and 1,670 control cats—based on 48 questions that focused on the cat’s age, breed, sex, neutering status and body condition, as well as questions regarding the cat’s general health, eating behavior and routine, and activity level, among others.

We lead increasingly busy lives. juggling work, family, personal issues and day-to-day general ‘stuff’. Our energy can feel unbalanced at any time even on the best of days and sometimes stressful situations can totally throw us out of sync. Holistic healing is a wonderful way of balancing your body mind and spirit. Everything is made up of energy. When we are stressed or unbalanced, our entire environment is affected, including our family, pets and our living or working environment. Our animal companions are highly sensitive beings. Their energy centres are easily thrown out of balance by negative energy in the home, i.e. noise, arguments, work stress, loss of a family member and even moving house, which can be extremely stressful for everyone involved. Reiki helps to balance our animal friends and give them a sense of calm and balance, helping them to stay healthy and relaxed, even in the most stressful of situations..

Our homes can also be affected by negativity, creating stagnant energies in our own living space. Space clearing, a specialised area of Feng Shui, can help to restore positive energy and movement into these stagnant areas, creating peace and calm – restoring the natural balance within your home, your sanctuary. A three-part healing experience for you and your animal companions, cleansing all the negative energies within your home environment. REVIEW ON ANN-MARIE FROM HEALING CONNEXIONS By Linda Navon I first met Ann-Marie about 4 years ago when we were staying at the same lodge in Tofu, Mozambique. There was a feral cat at the retreat which had a gummy eyes and no-one was taking care of it...

Enter Ann-Marie First she did some Reiki on this gorgeous ginger cat, spent time with him communicating and sending healing energy. Yes, we did get an antibiotic from a local source as the situation was not looking good and we didn’t want the cat to loose his eyesight. Ann-Marie worked with ‘Ginger’ every day, and by the end of our holiday, he was better. Two days ago Ann-Marie stepped back into my life as one of our adopted cats got ill, the vet had her on a drip and did all sorts of tests and couldn’t come up with any reason for the condition. She was send home and hasn’t improved despite us trying everything possible to tempt her appetite. On Friday we had various healers from as far afield as Paris, tuning into her energy and sending her healing. The general consensus is that she is depressed as there are plans for a move off the property on the cards. Now bear in mind that we adopted her when her first family emigrated – so she has picked up on the energy and understood that another move is imminent, and clearly this has stressed her out as she does not know where she fits into the picture.

Enter Ann-Marie again… On Monday this week, Ann-Marie came and chatted to my niece and I to establish what has changed in the past few months, made notes and discussed possible solutions. She brought a great sense of calm with her and all the pets clamored to get in the picture! Even the geese on the property gathered at our fence and made damn sure that we knew they were there. Ann-Marie then went and sat in the garden with our cat, Mik-Mok, and did her Reiki and just connected to her. Then based on what she picked up, and what we told her about the imminent move, she mixed a Bach Flower Remedy which we are giving to all the animals in their water and taking it ourselves. Today, two days later, Ann-Marie popped by on her way to the animal sanctuary where she volunteers her time, just to check in with Mik-Mok who was delighted to see her. She purred all the way through her treatment. So we are on the healing journey with this lovely cat, and I am talking to her to reassure her of her future and where we will be living. I have even told her about the view out the window of the horses and the sunsets she can watch. What we as humans probably don’t fully grasp, is that our pets are very tuned into our feelings and know what is going on, so it’s vital that we talk in positive terms to them when things are changing, or if you are going away to explain to them that you will be away for a few days and that you WILL be back. This has been a learning curve for us and we are adjusting our ‘animal-speak’ accordingly. The funniest thing about having Ann-Marie on the property is that she spread her healing light, and we know this as the same night the jackals in the area were more vocal, the geese have been hanging around more than usual, and two different neighbour's cats wanted to ‘cash in’ on the energy and came to visit us. My niece found a strange Siamese cat under her bed when she got home yesterday. Story to be continued....
