We have some really great articles this month to help you get your life on track. I know that I will certainly be following much of the sage advice myself. One of the articles that stands out for me personally this month is the article talking about the importance of Self Love in healing your relationship with others. This is something that we know logically, but do we know it experientially? I am learning this lesson at the moment. I realise that the loneliness, unhappiness and lack of love that I feel is in fact because I am lonely with myself, unhappy at some level in myself and at some level I need to love myself more. I am realising in very real terms that I cannot truly love another and be with them unless I love myself without them. That I need to be happy with myself and by myself. That the partner in my life simply adds to that, rather than supplying it fully. Powerful stuff. And I for one am really happy for the wealth of information and tools available to me in each issue of Conscious Life Magazine from our awesome writers. Take advantage of their knowledge – it can really transform your life
Please also check out the story on the Rhino Poaching movie that Emmanuel Castis is working on with Toby Wosskow: Sides of a Horn. The movie will expose the social impact of the rhino horn trade in a similar way that BLOOD DIAMOND did for the diamond trade—humanizing those on the ground, creating awareness, and catalysing positive change. The team of U.S. and South African filmmakers are partnering with influential conservationists and global organizations to release the film around the world with a direct call to action. They are calling on all of us to help them fund the movie’s production via KickStarter. Please go and donate to help them. I believe that what is really needed to turn this horrible situation around, is education of all parties, and exposing all aspects to the world. Coming together as one to change mind-sets. I wish you all a beautiful October month and look forward to chatting to you again in a month. Much love, and remember to be kind to yourself.

How Your Attitude Affects Your Health & Wellbeing By Eric Richardson Some people forget that health and wellbeing often require changes in attitude and activities. In order to be healthy, you may need to change your diet. You have to get the right building blocks into your body that it can stay/become healthy and repair. A change in attitude may be required, for example, if you are to eat certain vegetables when you have never liked them. You may also need to eliminate toxins from the body; it’s the toxins that are inhibiting the body from repairing, so get them out. Toxins can be from heavy metal poisoning as well as negative emotions that are stored in the organs of the body. They can be caused by a bad diet, or even the stress you keep experiencing in a particularly unhealthy environment. If you lack the courage to move homes, you may be exposed to lead poisoning. If you feel powerless to stand up to your boss, the resulting anger and resentment energies can get stored in the kidneys creating havoc with that organ's functioning. So you may need to reduce your stress levels; the longer you stay in a state of chronic stress the more compromised all aspects of your body function become. This might require that you leave the situation which no longer
Conscious Life Magazine
serves your highest and best, recognising that walking away does not always mean “giving up”. It might require you doing exercise, meditation, yoga, dancing etc. Or it might also require a simple shift in perceptions (which are informed by subconscious beliefs about what's expected) so that a situation which was previously "stressful" (leading to fight or flight modes) becomes easy to handle. “For example, if as children we learned that X is threatening, then whenever X comes into our environment, the mind’s interpretation will stimulate the brain to release neurochemicals that control cell behaviour and gene activity to coordinate a protection response… Perception controls biology (and) we are active participants in controlling the character of our health and behaviour (because we can) consciously control our perceptions” (Bruce Lipton).
Some people are able to make these changes just using positive thinking and free will. But for many people, Theta Healing (TH) offers much more because it works with the subconscious mind/body. By doing belief work and feeling "downloads", a TH practitioner can help you change your diet, detox and reduce stress. By literally changing the programs running the mind-body, a TH practitioner can help you return to vibrant health and vitality. Along the way, the practitioner can pull radiation and negative emotions trapped in the cells of the body, release the subconscious programs that keep you unnecessarily stuck in a place of suffering, activate your DNA, and teach the body new “feelings.
happens you are likely to experience a range of other emotional and physical responses. The diagnosis and treatment can be exceptionally stressful for many, and the reaction of others also matters. TH offers tools for managing your emotional state and reducing any fears and anxieties that are experienced because of a disease. It also offers energy tools to rebalance your system (the hormones, chakras, brain chemicals and alkalinity) to do what it needs to do to restore calm and wellbeing. TH can be used alongside any treatment plan, whatever the prognosis, stage or treatment. It can give you a way of taking back some control, finding some joy, and actively engaging in your body’s own healing process.
Unfortunately, being diagnosed with a disease is something that many will experience at some point in our lives. And when that
Moreover, TH can be used to discover and clear the underlying belief programs and emotions which generated the illness or

disease in the first place. Working with a TH practitioner may be useful to help you to clear or resolve underlying core issues which may be contributing to the creation of the disease. This can include negative memories, ancestral beliefs stored in the genes, stubbornness programs, and traumas that are still stuck in our energy system. The “soul fragment retrieval process” and the “send love to baby in the womb” process are two very helpful processes here. TH can also clear any negative beliefs, conscious or unconscious, connected with the disease itself. For example, if the disease is “hereditary”, and others died because of it, there may be a lot of blame or even guilt because of the blame. This energy needs to be cleared for the body to get well. Beliefs, we must remember, are very powerful. People die for their beliefs, they fight for them, religions are based on them, and governments are elected because of them. If a person believes they are weak, so then does their skeleton. Imagine how this could lead to bone diseases as the bones themselves have a weakness program? Even if you do not go to a practitioner, you can do TH on yourself on a day to day basis to help you cope, and restore wellbeing if you are stressed or ill. Even if it just 'makes you feel better' and happier, learn TH, use the techniques, and who knows, perhaps you will also choose to work with clients! The Conscious Brain & The 7Th Stage of the Evolution of Consciousness By David Hesketh
Is my brain conscious or am I conscious? The ‘Hard Problem of Consciousness’ (David Chalmers) is probably best captured in this question. That is, we don’t really know what consciousness is but we know that we are conscious – at least, I know that I’m conscious – well, sometimes, anyway - and that brain function is linked to various states of consciousness.
David Hesketh, MSc (Neuroscience/Education) trained in the neurosciences and as a Waldorf Teacher in his birth country, Canada. Since leaving the classroom in 2007, he has been conducting his scientific and spiritual research and practices from his offices in Johannesburg, while coaching and delivering The BrainFocus Seminar to groups and individuals. He is currently preparing an online version of his BrainFocus work. www.brainfocus.co.za
The current medical, cause-effect, mechanical model of brain function being promoted throughout much of our (social) media, would have us believe that it is the chemistry that gives rise to consciousness. As a neuroscientist, I can tell you the mechanistic basics of what is happening in the brain, as it relates to the various activities that I ‘consciously’ choose to engage. But I do not experience dopamine (the feel-good neurotransmitter) flooding the neurons in my ‘reward’ circuit when I score a goal in hockey. I just feel the excitement of that positive association. I don’t experience low levels of serotonin (another key neurotransmitter) when I feel low. I just feel low. So, is it the consciousness, my choices through thought, that is giving rise to the chemical phenomena or is the chemistry giving rise to the experience? The latter suggests that I am just product of biology. My sense of what is true tells me that this is not the whole story. While chemistry and physics have their place in explaining certain biological phenomenon, they can only claim partial truth. If they were wholly true, then there would not be any variability in their bid to explain life as we know it. I say partial truth because these sciences have their roots in the classical sciences which arose at the time of the 4th paradigm shift in
Conscious Life Magazine
thinking, birthed by the Greeks, taking hold at the Renaissance and maturing at the time of the Industrial Revolution. As the Evolution of Consciousness, first described by Rudolf Steiner, progressed, this stage is logical and rational (emerges today from developing Left Hemisphere between 10-15 yrs in optimal conditions) and has sought to unite humanity based on those things that we all have in common from the physico-biological body and brain. With it was ushered a humanitarian point of view. But the more recent Information Revolution, the 5th paradigm shift in the Evolution of Consciousness, outlined more recently by Jean Gebser & Ken Wilber, etc.) beginning in the 1960’s, has unleashed the 6th stage in the development of thinking and consciousness. It has laid bare the error in thinking of classical scientific absolutism and fomented a pluralistic or multi-perspectival point of view (emerges today from developing Frontal Cortex between 16-21 yrs in optimal conditions), where indeed, we are beginning to appreciate the individualistic nature of truth and physiological brain functioning (up to a point). But even this, doesn’t quite capture it. For we have entered an entirely new phase in the Evolution of Consciousness. The language we are using now is a hint of what is emerging in this 7th stage. Wholeness, Unity, Oneness and Integration all point to it. But what is different is that this is not just a way of thinking, it is a way of being and perceiving (emerges today during integration of brain capacities from 21 yrs onward in optimal conditions); that, in and of itself, transcends ‘experience’ and traditional ways of thinking. This is an entirely new way of knowing. And it is radical. It transcends words. The numbers of us that have evolved to this stage are yet small but continue to grow as people discover the way to enter this phase of human consciousness. And what is the way to enter this phase of
consciousness? Apart from conscious, clean nutrition & body awareness, strength, exercise, meditation and contemplative practices, there is another key to it. Let me explain it in the following way: Traditions all over the world, esoteric and non-esoteric alike, state that Spirit, is omnipresent and omnipotent. This has been confirmed repeatedly by Masters and those who have consciously transcended the TimeSpace Dimension in which most of us find ourselves. This means that there is no place that Spirit is not. That includes every atom, every photon, every wave-particle of energy measurable and immeasurable, every celestial body and space itself; every rock, plant, animal and human… everything seen and unseen. That is, there is only Spirit. For most of us, we are caught in The Great Search for God, for Spirit, which is, in and of itself, a contradiction and denial of this Omnipresent Reality. It is hidden by my attachment to being ‘me’, my separate-self, me as ego, me as identified with and attached to my mind, my ideas, my thoughts, my emotions, my body, MY brain. After all, I have grown up conditioned to this as fact. However, if the ever-present Spirit is everpresent and it is everywhere in everything, then, this already present state of things is available to you right now. For there is only now, anyways (Eckhart Tolle, etc.). Even future thoughts and past musings are happening right now, in my present awareness. In shifting awareness from the mind’s preoccupation with future and past, with thoughts and ideas, to stillness and awareness of your awareness, you move into presence, the timeless, ever-present awareness, Spirit, where you are at one with everything. Always available and always on… 24/7 (as a service provider so regularly reminds me! ).
Conscious Life Magazine
You probably have experienced such a state. People often report this when reconnecting in nature. You don’t see the mountain, you fuse with it. You are One with it. It could be the same with a flower, an animal, another human, a piece of music. You transcend the mind, the ego, the small self. You surrender to Being. You meld with it. For many people, it is an instant in time, a memory, like a door opening and closing. So profound can these experiences be, that we set off searching for it, to experience it again, for inwardly, we know that we have connected to something beyond our separate-selfness. But, it is this awareness that is actually available to each one of us right now. It is awareness, ever-present awareness, Spirit as such. It is so simple. I have been staring it in the face and have not real-ized it. All these years, I have been engaged in the Great Search. But I don’t have to search anymore because I now know the key is not waiting for ‘The Great Understanding’ to show up some day, it is realizing that is it here and a shift in my awareness to the ever-present awareness, conscious awareness, is available in every moment, in the now. I am still practicing ‘this shift’. I has meant that I practice just sitting in meditation, just driving, just watching the landscape or sunset arise in my awareness moment to moment.
Conscious Life Magazine
Just engaging awareness in presence, in omnipresent Spirit, feeling-knowing it is All. It has meant just witnessing people as they go about their day-to-day business – knowing that as I grow the consciousness of Spirit as everywhere in everything, then I Am Spirit, I Am them, They Are me … because there is nowhere that Spirit is not.
This is the knowing-feeling, not thinking, and a state of being, not doing, that arises with Stage 7 Integral Consciousness (Wilber, Gebser, Gilligan). I still think and do but rather than fighting for ego survival through thinking and doing, I rest in presence of thinking, feeling and doing that become tools; where I Am the user of Thinking, Feeling and Doing, not the other way around. This state is unified, at One and Whole. It is Consciousness as It Is. And so, from the perspective of Integral Stage 7 Consciousness, I can return to the question that I began with: Is my brain conscious or am I conscious? The answer is ‘yes’ – it is both because consciousness and matter arise together. Because it is One and the Same. Get in touch with David: www.brainfocus.co.za
What is Mirror Work? Mirror work is the most effective method I’ve found for learning to love yourself and see the world as a safe and loving place. I have been teaching people how to do mirror work for as long as I have been teaching affirmations. And what are affirmations? Put simply, whatever we say or think is an affirmation. All of your self-talk, the dialogue in your head, is a stream of affirmations. These affirmations are messages to your subconscious that establish habitual ways of thinking and behaving. Positive affirmations plant healing thoughts and ideas that support you in developing selfconfidence and self esteem, and creating peace of mind and inner joy. The most powerful affirmations are those you say out loud when you are in front of your mirror.
Why? Because the mirror reflects back to you the feelings you have about yourself. It makes you immediately aware of where you are resisting and where you are open and flowing. It clearly shows you what thoughts you will need to change if you want to have a joyous, fulfilling life. As you learn to do mirror work, you will become much more aware of the words you say and the things you do. You will learn to take care of yourself on a deeper level than you have done before. When something good happens in your life, you can go to the mirror and say, “Thank you, thank you. That’s terrific! Thank you for doing this.” If something bad happens to you, you can go to the mirror and say, “Okay, I love you. This thing that just happened will pass, but I love you, and that’s forever.”
Conscious Life Magazine
For most of us, sitting in front of a mirror and facing ourselves is difficult at first, so we call this process mirror work. But as you continue, you become less selfcritical, and the work turns into mirror play. Very soon your mirror becomes your companion, a dear friend instead of an enemy.
A Lifetime Habit of Mirror Work You may be wondering, why 21 days for the program? Can you totally transform your life in just three weeks? Maybe not totally, but you can plant the seeds.
As you continue to do your mirror work, these seeds develop into new, healthy habits of mind that open the door to a joyous and fulfilling life. Doing mirror work is one of the most loving gifts you can give yourself. It takes only a second to say, “Hi, kid,” or “Looking good,” or “Isn’t this fun?” It’s so important to give yourself little positive messages throughout the day. The more you use mirrors for complimenting yourself, approving of yourself, and supporting yourself during difficult times, the deeper and more enjoyable your relationship with yourself will become.
For more information and for 21 different mirror work exercises, take my 21-Day course, Mirror Work: 21 Days to Loving Yourself the companion to my Mirror Work book.

Self-love Is The Key To Healing Your Relationships The most basic human needs are to be loved and valued. A person most desires to feel safe, certain and secure when it comes to sharing their inner self with another person. Each person has a unique unconscious mind view of what an ideal romantic relationship is; based on their own filtered translation from their outer world; by witnessing parents and adults around them as children, books and movies. These beliefs and ideas become the molding hands for how a person behaves in moments of stress, and the quality of their decisions and emotional responses. Most often we hear complaints that “men are not emotional enough” and “women are overly emotional” or even vice versa. One of the most common being “my partner is no longer the person I met”. These complaints indicate that our society is living in a box of limiting beliefs and very little knowledge about the art of creating healthy relationships; this includes all other relationships beyond romantic/personal.
Many minds have the simple version of their happy relationships playing like a movie continuously. Myths and fairy tales live in our unconscious minds, a simple copy and paste idea of the happy ever after. It is something magical, a prince arriving to win his princess’s heart. When this happens, the joy experienced takes over the mind and castles are built in the sky, where euphoric display of love is celebrated, and a super human power exists awakening in each other the magnetic state of perceived bliss. A simple rose petal can mean more than a diamond. This illusion can become shattered, once the reality of a complex relationship starts to press the emotional buttons and people find themselves drowning in unchartered waters. In order for us to start re-creating a healthy model of romantic relationships, we first need to learn about the most important of ALL relationships. The one with SELF. Without this relationship being established and managed, it becomes impossible to live a congruent life that flows and grows effortlessly. A person that does not love themselves lives in fear of losing love and people. They start to control how people love them, and when their expectations are not met, they fall apart.
Conscious Life Magazine
Here are some valuable questions to connect with yourself: • • • • • • • • •
Do I love and accept myself unconditionally? What are my limiting beliefs about relationships? Do I have a healthy attitude to life, am I a happy person? How do I express love and receive love? Do I have enough skills to manage a permanent relationship? Are there any un-resolved fears and disappointments I am still carrying? Do I know what is important to me, can I easily communicate this? What are the reasons I want to be in a relationship? Do I naturally exhibit the qualities I seek in a partner?
People are living love from the “outside in”. This is a very conditional state of living, and definitely why so many empty relationships exist. When love has been activated within us, we stop living a conditional existence, we stop waiting for the world to approve of us, and we stop denying our true essence. We become liberated emotionally, and we start living from an inner peace. We discover we can become resilient, understanding and compassionate towards other people. We become skilled in tolerance and a natural ability to speak our truth, knowing that as we treat ourselves, others learn to treat us. The art of living love with another human being, creating a union deeper than the physical is absolutely possible, it simply requires a new school of thought, some sincere education and a total surrender to learning how to love being in your own body, building a healthy mind and being able to love from a state of unconditional bliss which requires a commitment to life.
Life and love is then appreciated as a gift, instead of a burden in an unknown world where victims project pain onto each other fighting for something that is as available as oxygen. We start to realize that we are all maturing with time, we are continuously changing, the things we enjoyed 5years ago is no longer our joy, we learn to detach from the sameness we meet each other in and we start to grow together, allowing each other space to evolve. This is love. As enchanting as this idea is, there are definitely many challenges one has to face in order to create this reality. It could mean that the suffering relationship you are in needs some resuscitation, perhaps even time apart emotionally to re-align to yourself and heal your inner wounding. Self-Love is the key to healing your relationships.
You always have two guardians with you, Choice and Chance. Choose to live and love well.

Judging others puts you in a position of superiority that no human being can boast to have achieved. If you exercise empathy in all life situations you meet, you not only allow yourself to judge others, but deny them the much needed support to get out of their circumstances. The first step to helping another is to refuse to empathize with them It is noble to want to place yourself in the shoes of another person, feel their pain and experience life from their point of view. This is what is called empathy — a much needed trait in humanity that has the power to transform the world. The irony of this trait is that it puts you in a position of judgment. It is involuntary judgment because the heart does not want to view the negative in the character of a person, but the negative in their circumstances. A good person cannot be without empathy and this is how the world expects all of us to be. If you do not seem to understand what another human being is going through, you are viewed as cold and ruthless.
Conscious Life Magazine
While empathy is meant to understand all human circumstances in the same way, we find ourselves showing the most empathy to our close friends and relatives. If you allow yourself to feel empathy for everyone you come into contact with, you set yourself up for a bumpy ride of emotions that accompany every situation. Empathy becomes more pronounced if you see someone going through a situation that you have found yourself in the past. It may be a situation that has still not been resolved completely and this has the power to bring back a flood of emotions. If a situation you have been happens to another person, you think that you are better equipped to empathize with them because you have risen past the vibrations of that negative energy.
Judgement in Empathy Judgment in empathy stems from the fact that you had made judgment of a situation when it happened to you and when it occurs again even if it is in another person, the same judgment will be transferred to them. The business of judging others is not for human beings and it should be avoided at all costs. Trying to empathize with others not only lowers your emotional strength but also makes you lose your connection to divinity, which could actually be helpful in helping the other person to heal. The human soul equates empathy to compassion which, in reality, is deciding what another person is feeling and then trying to condition your heart and mind into their same exact state. The universe has a way of channeling positive energies where there is positive thinking. If both the victim and the empathizer were to fall into a state of lower energies and suffer as a result, then there will be no one to help the other to come out of this state.
Just do it! Being too compassionate will invariably make you think too much about the problems of those that you want to help, which, in turn, will make you analyze the circumstances that led them to where they are. And, sooner or later, you will find yourself judging them for making the wrong decisions. Not only that you don’t have the complete picture, but it’s not your business to judge them in the first place. The only way out of this cycle is to deliberately refuse to be over compassionate, empathetic and judgmental. Don’t think too much about helping someone — just do it!

The fire element increases in the summer: there is more warmth, dryness and lightness. Hence summer is naturally a time of calming and cooling pitta. Fire qualities: Light, warm, dry, penetrating, sharp, transformative, subtle, ascending, expansive.
“To be one with nature again is vital – it allows inner and outer nature to blend, healing a separation that never existed in the first place.” Deepak Chopra
Summer is usually a time of improved health and expanded awareness: there are more daylight hours as well as warmer weather, which inspires us to spend more time outside connecting with nature. Each season brings with it certain positive qualities and certain challenges to our system. As with all Ayurvedic principles we just have to observe nature and notice the change in the qualities of the air, the light, the temperature and the weather so that we intuitively know how to live each moment harmoniously. Just watching and feeling nature is a practice of awareness and meditation.
Fire anatomy: Pitta can build up in the digestive system (acid reflux), liver (indigestion), eyes (sensitivity to light), skin (inflammations), joints (arthritis) and heart at this time of year. Be aware of any imbalances in these parts of your body. Fire physiology: Sight, digestion, appetite, metabolism, nutrient assimilation and body temperature are all affected by the increased warmth of summer. Be aware of any changes in these systems of your body. Psychic fire: Manipura chakra – situated behind the navel at the solar plexus and related to ambition, gain, wealth, achievement, goals, drive, direction, power, thought and counter-thought – this chakra can be stimulated by the natural increase in the solar energy and fire element. Be aware of mind states that are critical, judgemental, angry and reactive. Yogic summer: This is a good time to apply the wise teachings of Swami Satyananda Saraswati by becoming aware of and practicing discernment (viveka) and nonattachment (vairagya). By being more discerning, we are choosing what is best for us and not just following the perpetual likes and dislikes of our mind. By letting go we can start to become free from the pleasure and pain of our experiences and move towards acceptance, an open heart and living in the precious present moment.

Start your morning with a dash of Aloe Vera juice (50ml) in a class of warm water, this will help to flush heat toxins from your liver. Then massage yourself with room temperature coconut oil which nourishes and clears any heat from your skin. Shower off with luke warm water. Walk or stand with bare feet on a cool dewy lawn for a calming and centred start to your meditation practice or simply to connect with nature’s beauty. Start your yoga practice with some cooling and calming Sheetali pranayama– this is an especially calming and soothing breathing practice where you roll your tongue into a tube then draw the in breath through this tube and breathe out through your nostrils. You can feel the cool air chilling you out! As we have seen pitta can accumulate in your digestive system especially the liver and small intestine. Do some abdominal stretching and twisting exercises to help clear pitta from your belly. Try Trikonasna (triangle series), Bhujangasana (cobra), Matsyanasna (fish), Matsyendrasana (twist), Ushtrasana (camel) to massage pitta out of the intestines. As pitta can also accumulate in the eyes, via the liver, try doing a range of eye exercises to relax the eyes and increase circulation that can carry away any excess heat. If you are already a bit of a pitta prone person (hot-headed!) it is important to not do too many inverted poses as these bring heat up into your head. After yoga anoint yourself with some fragrant sandalwood or rose oil. Place a drop on your third eye, throat and navel to keep these centres of awareness cool, calm and collected. Your diet in the summer can consist of sweet (grains), bitter (salads/leafy greens), astringent (pulses) tastes and be light and easy to digest.

A light nourishing breakfast of a fruit, seed and nut smoothie will sustain your energy levels through the morning. Add a pinch of saffron for flavour and cooling energy. Eating lunch around noon when the sun is at its zenith is best. Try kitchari as a cooling nutritive meal. Add a teaspoon of ghee or hemp seed oil at the end with some grated fresh coconut. Eat it with cucumber raita as a delicious condiment. Green salad is ok at lunchtime. For supper have a light meal of basmati rice, sprouted mung beans and green leafy vegetables. Best to avoid salad at night as it will aggravate vata. In the summer it is best to also avoid all dark meats such as beef, lamb and pork as well as citrus fruits, tomato, garlic, onion, salt and sour dairy products as these all increase pitta. A good way of flushing pitta out of the body is via the bowel; Ayurveda recommends Amla herbal remedy as a mild laxative. When you are thirsty try drinking cool herbal teas of peppermint, liquorice, fennel and chamomile. It’s important to watch out for pitta emotions arising such as criticism, being judgmental, irritation and anger. If you feel a bit ‘hot under your collar’ a good trick is to hold a glass of water in your mouth as the water cools your pitta and keeps you quiet! Before you go to bed, especially if it has been a hot day, rub the soles of your feet with coconut or castor oil to bring all the heat down to your feet. Wash your face in organic rose water and spray it in your bedroom. It is helpful to fill your home and bedroom with fragrant roses and jasmine in the summer. Best to go to bed before 11pm as pitta peaks at around 12 midnight. If you sleep on your right side then ida nadi in the left nostril is activated and guarantees you a blissful nights rest.

Millions of people have experienced urinary incontinence (UI), which is an involuntary leak of urine. UI is a condition that can be slightly bothersome or totally debilitating. For some people, the risk of public embarrassment keeps them from enjoying many activities with their family and friends. Urine loss can also occur during sexual activity and cause tremendous emotional distress.
UI has a great impact on quality of life and because the condition is not life-threatening, it does not get the attention that it deserves, from both patients and healthcare providers. The prevalence of UI varies between the genders and also by age. It is more common in women, but certainly does occur in men. The prevalence of UI in men is around half of that in women. It tends to occur in older men due to an enlarged prostate blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. Symptoms of prostatic enlargement, can start in men in their forties. Older women tend to experience UI more often than younger women. However, UI is not inevitable with age. UI occurs because of problems associated with the muscles and nerves that help to hold or release urine. UI will occur if the bladder muscles suddenly contract or the sphincter muscles are not strong enough to hold back urine. Urine may escape with less pressure than usual if the muscles are damaged, causing a change in the position of the bladder. The causes of UI differ between the two genders. The most common causes of UI in women include weakening of the pelvic floor muscle due to factors such as obesity, traumatic or prolonged natural childbirth, chronic cough as in asthmatics or smokers, chronic constipation or following a hysterectomy. Other common causes include menopause and cancer of the cervix or radiation treatment for the cancer. In men, an enlarged prostate is the most common cause of UI. Both men and women can become incontinent from neurologic injury such as trauma to the spinal cord e.g. after a car accident, birth defects, trauma to the brain as with strokes or a head injury and following pelvic surgery, typically for urological or colorectal surgery.

The most common types of urinary incontinence include the following: Stress incontinence Stress incontinence is the leakage of small amounts of urine during physical movement such as when coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising. The loss of urine is associated with an increase in intra-abdominal pressure. Physical changes resulting from pregnancy, childbirth and menopause often cause stress incontinence. This type of incontinence is common in women and, in many cases, can be treated. It has been found that 20-30% of young adult women experience UI, which is mostly stress incontinence and that 30-40% of middle-aged women with UI, also typically suffer from stress incontinence.
Urge incontinence Urge incontinence is the loss of large amounts of urine for no apparent reason after suddenly feeling the need or urge to urinate. Urge incontinence occurs at unexpected times such as during sleep or it may be brought on for example, by hearing water running when turning on a tap.
Mixed urinary incontinence Mixed urinary incontinence is usually the occurrence of stress and urge incontinence together. It is the most common type of urine loss in women, affecting 30-50% of postmenopausal women.
Total urinary incontinence Total UI is the continuous loss of urine, throughout the day which is completely unrelated to any event or activity. All of the above types of UI typically occur in women.
Overflow urinary incontinence Overflow UI is an unexpected leakage of small amounts of urine because of a full bladder. It occurs when the bladder doesn’t empty properly, causing it to spill over. Overflow UI typically occurs in men, due to an obstruction to the flow of urine out of the bladder. Weak bladder muscles or a blocked urethra may cause this type of incontinence. Overflow incontinence is rare in women.
Conscious Life Magazine
Managing urinary incontinence The older man who is incontinent is normally being looked after by his children, who will insist on him seeking medical attention. Younger woman, however, tend to deal with the condition as best they can by wearing sanitary pads, limiting their fluid intake and activities away from the house and by planning trips out of the house around toilet stops and, if necessary, by allowing her world to contract to the barest minimum contact with the outside world. Treatment options depend on the cause of the UI. Treatment ranges from simple, non-invasive interventions such as physiotherapy to strengthen the pelvic floor muscle to taking medicines to stabilise excessive bladder contractions, to surgery. In certain circumstances, more extensive and invasive surgery may be required to keep the patient dry. Other options include in-dwelling catheters that the patient has inside the bladder all the time or a catheter that a patient passes into their bladder every few hours. Novel treatment options on the horizon for sufferers include urethral bulking agents, Botox injections into the bladder and neurostim implantation.
Urethral bulking agents Bulking agents are injected into tissues around the bladder neck and urethra to make the tissues thicker and close the bladder opening to reduce stress incontinence. This treatment is ideal for older patients who are not fit for general anaesthesia. The advantage of this treatment is that it can be done as a day case under local anaesthesia and sedation. Over time, the body may slowly eliminate certain bulking agents and the patient may then need a repeat injection within 12 -18 months.
Botox injection into the bladder A Botox injection into the bladder can be done as a day case. It is a less extensive and less invasive procedure than surgery. Patients should be considered for reinjection when the clinical effect of the previous injection has diminished. The Botox injection may need to be repeated within 9-12 months. It has a longer duration of action in children.
Neurostim implantation This involves the implantation of an electrode into the spine of patients with symptoms of urgency incontinence not responding to other therapies. Stimulation of nerves to the bladder may be effective in resolving urgency incontinence in some patients.

“No one can give a definition of the soul. But we know what it feels like. The soul is the sense of something higher than ourselves, something that stirs in us thoughts, hopes, and aspirations which go out to the world of goodness, truth and beauty. 10 Things A Medical Intuitive Wants You To Know About Your Health
by Carolyn Harrington
I’m a medical intuitive and an energy healer. That means I can tap into people’s energy and provide information that helps them heal. But I couldn’t always do this. It all began when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis right around the same time my daughter was born with her own health issues. What started as a journey to regain our health led me down a path to helping and healing others. I want people to know that each of us has the power to heal, the power to quiet our minds and reach within ourselves for some direction. Most importantly, we have the power to educate ourselves with the knowledge to know what is right for our bodies. Here’s what I wish everyone knew about healing:
1. Energy is everywhere and affects everything. We’re all energy beings. Quantum physics shows us that everything in our universe is made of energy, including ourselves. Every part of our body generates a unique frequency: every cell, every organ, your skin, and hair follicles—even our thoughts are frequencies. If your energy were allowed to flow freely throughout your body, you’d be in perfect health. But we know that’s never the case. When you come into contact with things that aren’t good for you, it disrupts your energy. Things that can disrupt your energy include pathogens, toxins, bacteria, and even negative thoughts.
Conscious Life Magazine
2. Brain power is a real thing. Your brain monitors your body thousands of times per second. Since your body wants to stay in homeostasis—an optimally balanced state—it's continually checking to see if it should raise your blood pressure, lower your body temperature, or secrete more or fewer hormones. As an energy healer and medical intuitive, I try to uncover the root cause of the problem by tapping into your brain and intuition. Since your body only has so many resources available, your brain will devote its energy to what it feels is the most pressing issue and that what I try to tap into.
3. You were born this way. Your body is capable of healing on its own, you just need to learn how to tap into your healing ability. We all know how to heal; it is an innate ability we all possess and with practice, we can all become better at healing ourselves. You don’t have to leave your healing in the hands of others. You do have control. There are things you can do every day to move the healing process along: Eat clean, exercise, be mindful, believe you can heal, think positive thoughts, and surround yourself with healthy, positive people.
4. A healthy home is a healing home The energy in a healthy home promotes healing and rejuvenation, and there are so many ways to accomplish this: Use natural cleaners, plant indoor plants, open the windows for fresh air, play healing music, declutter, or have wind chimes playing in the background.
5. Take time to understand your emotions. The intangible, abstract forms of energy can play a crucial role in healing. When you feel nurtured and loved, you promote healing within your own body, but when you experience negative emotions like fear and worry, healing can become blocked. You need to release negative emotions to unlock your healing potential. Visit an energy healer or one that provides distance healing and/or energy readings to pinpoint the emotions that are blocking your healing. Or you can try acupuncture, Bach Flowers Therapy, or tapping to release yourself from those emotions.
6. Love is the ultimate healing emotion. Love is one of the most exhilarating feelings we can ever experience. The emotion of love vibrates at the highest frequencies of all the emotions you can experience. That’s why you feel so energized when you fall in love. Whether you’re in a relationship or not, there are things you can do to open yourself up to love. You have to love yourself before you can truly love others, forgive yourself and others who may have hurt you, let out your inner child, and pick up a hobby that fills you with joy. When you expect happiness and love, beautiful things will happen.
Conscious Life Magazine
7. You get what you attract. Positive thoughts attract positive outcomes. If we are focused on something, we have the ability to attract it into our lives. Keep your thoughts where you want to go. If you realized how powerful your thoughts were, you’d never think a negative thought again. We all have a subconscious and conscious mind. Your conscious mind is your thinking mind when you’re awake, but your subconscious mind has the real power because it’s doing so much more than your conscious mind. If you train your subconscious mind for healing, you'll be much better off.
8. Healing is an art. Medicine absolutely has its place in the world—and it's an important one—but so does natural healing! Healing is all about the subtle things you do, like removing a negative influences in your life or changing your mindset from one of doubt to one of confidence and hope. Always believe in your body's amazing healing abilities and surround yourself with positive people, places, and feelings.
9. No natural healing effort is ever wasted. I’ve been asked countless times, "Why didn’t this healing method work for me?" I always respond, "How do you know that it didn’t?” Healing is not restricted to the physical body; it can take place on deeper levels that you may not be able to see. When you try a healing technique and don’t feel an immediate difference, trust that healing has occurred. You may not know it because it’s on a deeper level.
10. Surround yourself with loving, positive people. We all have an energy field around us. When we’re close to someone else, their energy field can blend with ours. If that person is negative, their energy may make us feel exhausted, frustrated, or even depressed for no reason. If you are thinking loving thoughts, it most definitely will have a positive impact on people around you who are receiving them.

The Alkaline Diet: What Is It And Does It Work?
The alkaline diet is making news headlines. Why? Because the modern diet is increasing the acid content of our bodies. threatening our pH levels – the delicate but vital balance of alkali and acid in our systems. Let’s discuss the alkaline diet, how it works and if it’s worth it.. If you’re getting through your day on coffee, sweets, snacks, fast foods and after-work wine or beer (come on, we’ve seen those queues!), think twice. Your amazing body is, as they say, ‘a finely tuned machine’. It’s quite capable of maintaining that fine-tuning, and that includes the delicate job of balancing the levels of acid or alkaline (the pH levels) in its fluids and tissues. Your body needs a tightly controlled pH level of 7.365 to 7.4 in its blood to function properly. If you eat poorly, the levels of acid in your system increase. That weakens your body’s defenses against degenerative diseases such as bone loss, arthritis and muscle wasting, and even tumours. ‘Even very tiny alterations in the pH level of various organisms can cause major problems,’ says natural health practitioner Dr Josh Axe.
Conscious Life Magazine
So what is an alkaline diet?
We are what we eat
An alkaline diet helps balance the pH level of the fluids in your body, including your blood and urine. Your pH level is partially determined by the mineral density of the foods you eat, so eating an alkaline diet can help to:
In the past two centuries, mass industrialisation of our food supply has disturbed the mineral balance in our diet. So the food we eat contains less potassium, magnesium and chloride, but far more sodium (salt) than before. Normally, our kidneys keep our levels of calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium stable. But a diet of overly acidic foods places a strain on this function. We’re simply eating too many refined fats, simple sugars, sodium and chloride. And the result? We’re ageing faster, our organs are battling to work properly, our muscle strength is declining, and we’re losing bone mass. High acidity levels are robbing our bodies of vital minerals. And you know what? These conditions are avoidable…
Improve the ratio between potassium and sodium, which may benefit bone health, reduce muscle wasting, and ease other chronic diseases such as hypertension and stroke. • Increase magnesium – needed to activate vitamin D. • Improve the production of growth hormones and vitamin D absorption, which also help protect bones and ease other chronic diseases. Growth hormones also promote cardiovascular health, memory and cognition. • Help fight inflammation, and possibly help benefit certain chemotherapeutic agents that require a higher pH.
Take our advice to alkalinity in your body: • •
Wonder what ‘pH level’ means? What we call pH is short for the potential of hydrogen, and is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of our body’s fluids and tissues. It’s measured on a scale from 0 to 14. The more acidic a solution is, the lower its pH (battery acid is 0; bleach has a pH of 13). The more alkaline, the higher the number is. pH levels vary throughout the body (the stomach is the most acidic area), but the optimal human body tends to be around 7.4.

Get fresh. Eat seven to nine servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. (You’ll find a comprehensive list here.) That includes all our favourites: avocado, baby potatoes, broccoli, bananas, ginger, garlic, lemons (yes!) and olive oil. Look to that perennial favourite – the Mediterranean diet. Raw foods are the best. Most fruit and veg can be used fresh in salads – in fact, cooking depletes foods of their alkalising minerals. Tired of salads? Try steaming foods lightly. Juicing is good too, especially when you add fresh or powdered grasses – they’re a great source of chlorophyll, which helps alkalise the blood. Up your intake of plant proteins. Eat nuts, especially almonds, seeds such as raw pumpkin seeds, and beans. Exercise daily, but don’t spend hours at the gym. Breathe deeply. You inhale oxygen and exhale acidic carbon dioxide. And relax too!

THE BODY/MIND CONNECTION Our minds and our body are so intrinsically connected and as so rightly quoted in the Godfather, "When the mind suffers, the body cries out“ Every physical and emotional pain is a teacher. Our Inner Physician knows everything about us and is there to help us go back through our great journey to find the originating seed of our presenting pain. Once heard, acknowledged and healed, it no longer needs to teach us and the pain diminishes or leaves. Most of us tend to think that our body and mind are separate systems and believe they function for the most independently. When we feel pain we reach out to the outer world by going to the doctor, physiotherapist or healer, however we miss the teaching it has on offer. Yet instinctively we know this is not the whole story. By learning how to communicate inwardly we can become our own master healers a lot of the time.
In the words of the great Yogi Paramahansa Yogananda, "There is an innate connection between the mind and the body.... All disease have their origins in the mind. The pain that affects the physical body are secondary diseases" To isolate the pain or disease as being unconnected from anything else is to deny the cause (underlying feelings and attitudes) will make another effect known at some other time: another area of disease of discomfort will arise in an attempt to show you where you are out of balance. Through society, religion and parental figures, various beliefs and attitudes are placed upon us. This can result in us suppressing our emotions and feelings, because we falsely believe that emotions such as anger and grief are not appropriate and that we should hide, and not show, these feelings. Children feel alone in their feelings and do not believe that anyone feels the way they do. False assumptions and beliefs are formed around being not good enough and this can affect us throughout our lives.

Even when we are in the womb we are not only fed nutritionally by our mothers, but also we are fed all her anxieties, fears and emotional upsets. At this early stage of formation, our cognitive side of our brain has not developed enough to distinguish what is ours and what belongs to our mothers feelings. Then comes birth, here we are being pushed towards a dark tunnel, not knowing where we are going and what waits for us on the other side. We are blinded by bright lights, loud noise, green huge people and then we are turned upside down and smacked in order to take our first breath. We are taken away from our mothers, our protective covering removed and inoculated before being returned to our mothers. What trauma in entering the world. The lucky ones, had natural water births with dim lights and soothing sounds as they entered the world. Children cannot express their feelings in our language and need to be communicated at their level. The world is large from their little world and we are like giants in their eyes. As parents we all loose it sometimes with our kids. This is scary for the child, as our faces change, our voice gets louder as well as our energy enlarges. We can look like monsters and this creates enormous shock and fear and causes them to disassociate from themselves. As we grow older we need to go back to those parts and mend them through the power of our creative minds and find those split off parts of ourselves so that we cam bring them back home to our selves. The mind cannot distinguish the difference between imagination and reality. By healing our parts and letting our inner child feel the safety of our own beings we can heal from the inside out. If one suppresses these feelings, they still have to manifest somewhere. Suppressed anger and grief manifests as lactic acid along the meridian lines of the body.
As long as these emotions sit and accumulate in the body, this will inevitably cause some form of dis-ease within the physical, mental, emotional or spiritual parts of ourselves. When disease or pain manifests, one can ask and find out why this is presenting itself from the subconscious parts of ourselves and we can then learn how to help ourselves, and others. Likewise, with any kind of trauma or abuse, we dissociate from ourselves as a coping mechanism. Unfortunately we still hold the memory of this past blockage. Our Inner Physician is always there to communicate with us and to tell us where we need healing as we go through similar trauma's which affect out body. We all know our traumas and we do not need to pick at the wound but rather to go down as the nurturer and protector and heal them with unconditional love and safety. As we develop this deeper connection with the inner aspects of ourselves the body responds with great delight.
As a Body/Mind Intuitive, it still amazes me how quickly pain can diminish and heal by listening to one's Inner Physician. Written by Adie Shub

What is Frankincense? Many know of Frankincense as one of the plant-derived treasures, along with myrrh, given to the newborn Jesus in the New Testament. Its use in a religious context goes beyond Christianity, however. According to the Hebrew Bible, frankincense and myrrh were components of the holy incense ritually burned in Jerusalem’s sacred temples during ancient times. Frankincense is derived from the sap from a specific variety of trees in the genus Boswelia. Harvests are done at various times and the more opaque resins are considered to be the best quality.

22 Powerful Uses of Frankincense for Health, Wellness, & Healing The following uses of Frankincense are based upon my own personal experience or on the experience and knowledge of trusted colleagues in the online community. In going through this list, I am sure that you will agree that Frankincense deserves its reputation as the “King of Oils. 1. Heal wounds from cuts, scrapes, and burns. For even greater benefit, apply Lavender essential oil first then layer Frankincense on top. The combination of these two oils together is amazing when it comes to healing wounds. 2. Reduce and fade scars. Continue use after the wound has healed to reduce and fade scarring. 3. Relieve the symptoms of gout. Mixed 50/50 with a carrier oil, Frankincense has been known to relieve the painful symptoms of gout. I know this is true because during our recent vacation, my husband had a flare-up of gout and after applying frank and coconut oil 4 times daily, the pain was all but gone within three days. 4. Foster strong immune system. The antiseptic properties of Frankincense make it ideal for supporting a strong immune system. Massage a few drops into the balls of your feet every day. In addition, try diffusing it throughout your home and especially in the bedroom at night. This is especially good during cold and flu season.
5. Stress and anxiety management. Apply a drop at the temples to relieve stress and evoke a feeling of calmness. You can also rub a few drops mixed in a carrier oil on the back of the neck when you feel anxious. Something else you can do is simply inhale the aroma of the oil by rubbing a drop or two between the palms of your hands then bringing them up to your nose and taking a deep breath. 6. Mitigate depression and feelings of helplessness. Apply a few drops to the back of the neck and especially around the brain stem two or more times daily. 7. Anti-aging. None of us likes to look old. Dabbing Frankincense on fine lines and wrinkles will make them less noticeable. A 50/50 blend with a carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil) in a glass roller ball is recommended. You can also add a drop of Frank to your daily moisturizer. 8. Replacement for NSAIDS/Advil. Frankincense is a powerful anti-Inflammatory and can be used to relieve conditions where pain and inflammation are present. 9. Colds and congestion. Put up to six drops in a sink or bowl filled with very hot water then bend over the sink with a towel draped over your head to contain the steam. Breathe in the vapors for at least five minutes, adding more hot water as needed. Be careful not to scald yourself; the water should be hot, not boiling.

10. Relieve itching. A single drop applied to the affected area will bring immediate relief. 11. Relieve arthritis pain and swelling. Mix with a carrier (such a Simple Salve or DIY healing salve) and rub into aching joints at night before bed and throughout the day, 12. Clear up cystic acne. Dab one drop on stubborn spots of cystic acne morning and night. According to my friend Wendy at Mom’s Essential Oils, this treatment cleared things up for her son in just two or three applications! 13. Relaxation. Add 5 or 6 drops to a diffuser and breath in the oil to open the senses and create a calming atmosphere. Perfect for quiet meditation.
14. Remove moles, skin tags, and warts. Apply a single drop 3 or 4 times a day until gone. Note that if the mole is dark and ragged around the edges and/or growing quickly, see your healthcare professional for an assessment and possible treatment. 15. Reduce swelling from insect bites. A single drop dabbed on an insect bite will reduce the swelling and stop the itching. 16. Enhance vision. I have seen many references to “studies” that indicate that Frankincense will improve vision and possibly eliminate the need for reading glasses. I could not find a single study myself, however. That said, my personal experience tells me that Frank will indeed improve vision and if my latest test results are accurate, using Frankincense along my optical bone and under my eye has halted, for now, the progression of glaucoma. Please take care not to get any oil in the eye itself. In this case, less is more. 17. Remove musty odors. Place a couple of drops in a small dish of water and the room will take on a much fresher smell. 18. Restless leg syndrome. Apply 2 drops Frankincense with carrier oil to the bottom of each foot and massage each night to relieve restless leg syndrome. 19. Oral Health: Useful as preventative measure against oral health problems such as bad breath, toothaches, cavities, canker sores, and other infections. Try mixing with baking soda and coconut oil to make your own toothpaste. 20. Promote sleep and prevent insomnia. Diffuse frankincense at bedtime to help you slow down your breathing and relieve nervous tension and anxiety. You will sleep like a baby! 21. Boost the healing power of homemade remedies and beauty products. JoAnn from God, Family, Country, Love adds a few drops of Frankincense to DIY salves, lip balms, and roller balls. It boosts the power of everything else! (More about that in #22 below.) 22. Enhance the efficacy of other essential oils. The best is saved for last. Layer Frankincense over other essential oil to enhance that oil’s properties and drive the oils deeper into the cells. This layering will deliver amazing results for those times when you need to kick it up a notch.

Essential Oils and You Essential oils are adaptive, meaning they adapt to your unique body chemistry. What this means is that sometimes an oil will work for you right away and sometimes you have to be consistent and use it over a period of days to see results. And, in some cases, a particular oil may not work for you at all. Finding the right combination of oil or oils may take some trial and error. In my own experience, I have found that the basics such as lavender, peppermint, oregano, lemon, melaleuca (tea tree) and rosemary work for me without fail, every time. Other, more complex blends may take a while but when they kick in, the carry a punch. And always, Frankincense seems to make every oil I use more effective sooner.
Practical Concerns You will notice that I frequently mention the use of a carrier oil. In most cases, mixing Frankincense with a carrier (such as coconut oil or a salve) will make the application easier. In addition, you will be saving money because you will be diluting the oil 50/50. Be cautious, though, and ensure that the Frankincense you purchase is 100% essential oil and not prediluted. You will want 100% pure Frankincense so that you can dilute, or not, yourself. I like to dilute 50/50 in a roller ball bottle (such as these or these). For that I use fractionated coconut oil which is in liquid form. If you see the term FCO used, it is an acronym for fractionated coconut oil.
Coconut oil is a wondrous substance. To learn more, be sure to read Every Prepper Needs Coconut Oil in Their Pantry. Fair warning though, you will fall in love with this stuff. Although not known for side effects, frankincense essential oil should not be used during pregnancy unless cleared in advance with your healthcare provider. Likewise, always dilute with a carrier oil when used on children. My own education continues. A few months back I purchased a big fat book entitled “Essential Oils Desk Reference and I use it almost daily. If you can afford it, I highly recommend that you add this desk reference to your survival library. Although it promotes another brand of oils, the information is presented in an unbiased manner and there is never a sales pitch one way or another. Going forward, I plan to continue to share information on additional, less common, essential oils. There are dozens of oils out there and I am convinced that we can all maintain our health and wellness during times of crisis with the proper selection of essential oils in our first aid kits.
Be well and stay safe! Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

Archangel Ariel -The EarthArchangel Ariel’s name means “Lion or Lioness”.
She is very concerned with Nature working with the Elementals and assisting them to maintain healthy environments everywhere but especially with water. She assists with the healing of Nature and protects all animals, fish, birds and insects. She is very concerned about wild animals because they are losing more and more of their natural habitat. She requests all those who are passionate about Mother Earth to work with her in healing the world’s environment. She says that we have a responsibility to look after and nurture the Earth for time is running out for those of us that live on this Planet. Too much abuse and misuse has taken place over the centuries and now we are paying the price; those that work with only their interests and greed foremost in their actions will be stripped of their power either financially, emotionally or both.
This abuse will no longer be tolerated. Mother Earth is starting to retaliate and cleanse in the way of earthquakes, floods, Tsunami’s and other disasters that are becoming more frequent. We need to instil a feeling of respect for all living things to enable everything and everyone to flourish. She gives great joy and satisfaction to those that work with her, healing and respecting all creatures big and small as well as Mother Gaia who sustains everything and everyone. Archangel Ariel thanks you for caring and for teaching your children and grandchildren to care!

Conscious Life Magazine
It is in our human nature that we want to feel important but we seek to be and feel important from the ones nearest and dearest to us… But what if we were the most important person in our life and they were the most important person in their life? Putting yourself first is not selfish, it is allowing you to be the best version of you so you can be there for others in the way that best serves you and them. Learning to understand how to put yourself first can sometimes be a challenge as well as having the discernment of when to, as there is always the factor of being in ego. It may be easier to put others first or seek others’ opinions/validation so that we can have a sense of importance in order to help us feel more ‘complete’ or ‘fulfilled’.
So what would it take to acknowledge yourself and be important to you? The lack in us is an illusion. Before we were born, (while we were in the womb), we had access to Higher wisdom. Then when we were born all that wisdom was removed from our consciousness and we become like sponges; absorbing everything around us. We learned how to think, speak, act, be and do from our parents, those around us and whatever environments we were exposed to. Some of our experiences from childhood left us feeling disappointed, rejected, angry, hurt and sad. We stored these in our sub-conscious and created limiting beliefs and feelings. In addition, we also carry residual memories in our cells for generations and lifetimes. These experiences, feelings and stored cellular memories contribute to us feeling unsafe in some way or another. This often leads us to responding negatively or defensively to challenging situations, triggers and setbacks. And we find ourselves constantly fighting to fulfill this need of feeling safe.
Conscious Life Magazine
So what would make you feel safe right now? Whatever your answer, question that answer with “what is the worst thing of not having [your answer]”. You will find the deeper you dig – questioning each answer further, you will gain access to your sub-conscious and insight to your limiting feeling and beliefs. Each year gets more challenging resulting in some high and some lows…hoping the next year will become easier and more rewarding. We need to come to the understanding that how we respond/react to these challenges is what can make it easier. Stop resisting what the lesson is and understand growth comes in many forms, the most significant progress we can make is pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones. Be open to the possibilities… I am still being challenged to learn how to set healthy boundaries; to know that my best is good enough; that experiences in my life only make me grow and it’s up to me to acknowledge my growth and continue to take more steps without fear, doubt and worry… But by just being truly open to possibilities and change, it is making this journey so much easier. One of the biggest learning most of us are faced with is trusting in ourselves and in life itself! When you are open and willing to receive, opportunities you never considered will confront you; and the more you live in gratitude the more you will be blessed with surprises, not to say everything is smooth sailing but I am truly experiencing what a fundamental factor gratitude is in life… So are you willing and able to allow yourself to experience calmness in chaos? “Let us rise above our discomforts of fear and change; believe in ourselves to persevere and conquer; be open to receiving the gifts that are awaiting us and embrace all of life with gratitude”

How to Balance Your Chakras
There are 7 main energy centers in the body, known as chakras. Each chakra is located throughout our body so that it correlates to specific body ailment and physical dysfunctions; each energy center also houses our mental and emotional strengths. When we have a physical issue, it creates weaknesses in our emotional behavior. When we release the stale energy from the body, it can undo any tightness, stiffness, or malfunction of that area. The clearing of the energy can also balance our emotional state of mind. The Chakra Mind-Body Balance is a two-way street: if there are certain fears and emotions we are holding on to, we experience physical restrictions, too. If you have achiness or stiffness, or certain re-occurring emotions and fears, read along and you may find out which chakra is affected or blocked.
Conscious Life Magazine
1st or Root Chakra Sits at the base of your spine, at your tailbone. The areas associated are from the feet to your coccyx.
When this chakra is balanced, we have an ability to take risks, we are creative, we are committed. We are passionate, sexual and outgoing. The lesson of this chakra is to honor others.
Physical imbalances in the root chakra include problems in the legs, feet, rectum, tailbone, immune system, male reproductive parts and prostrate gland. Those with imbalances here may experience issues of degenerative arthritis, knee pain, sciatica and constipation.
Remedy: The Orange Light Matrix oil rubbed right around the body from navel to pubic bone, or used as a bath oil (morning and evening), will help restore balance in this area.
3rd or Solar Plexus Chakra Emotional imbalances include feelings affecting our basic survival needs: money, shelter and food; your ability to provide for life’s necessities. When this chakra is balanced, you feel supported, a sense of connection and safety to the physical world, and grounded. The lesson of this chakra is self-preservation; with an easy ability to manifest support.
Remedy: Use the Red Light Matrix oil anywhere from the feet to the tailbone to bring balance to this chakra. It can be rubbed directly onto the body, or used as a bath oil. (mornings only, as this oil is stimulating and may affect your sleep)
Located three inches above your navel. This area affected is the solar plexus and middle back. Physical imbalances include digestive problems, liver dysfunction, chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, stomach ulcers, pancreas and gallbladder issues, colon diseases.
Emotional imbalances include issues of personal power and self-esteem, our inner critic comes out. Fears of rejection, criticism, physical appearances. This is the stress area in the body.
2nd or Sacral Chakra
When this chakra is balanced, we feel selfrespect and self-compassion. We feel in control, assertive, confident.
Located two inches below your navel. It affects your whole hip and lower back area.
The lesson of this chakra is self-acceptance, and reclaiming your personal power.
Physical imbalances include sexual and reproductive issues, urinary problems, kidney dysfunctions, hip, pelvic and low back pain.
Remedy: To bring balance to this chakra, rub the Yellow Light Matrix oil around the middle of your body twice a day, or use as a bath oil.
Emotional imbalances include our commitment to relationships. Our ability to express our emotions. Our ability to have fun, play based on desires, creativity, pleasure, sexuality. Fears of impotence, betrayal, addictions.
Conscious Life Magazine
4th or Heart Chakra Located at the heart. The area affected is the chest and upper back. Physical imbalances include asthma, heart and lung issues, issues with breasts, lymphatic systems, upper back and shoulder problems, arm and wrist pain. Emotional imbalances include issues of the heart; rejection, jealousy, abandonment, bitterness. Fear of loneliness. Not believing you deserve love or that love is reliable When this chakra is balanced we feel joy, gratitude, love and compassion, forgiveness flows freely, trust is gained. The lesson of this chakra is I Love. Remedy: To heal the heart and bring balance to this chakra use the Green Light Matrix Oil twice a day; right around the heart, chest and upper back area, or in your bath.
5th or Throat Chakra Located at the throat. The area affected is the throat and neck Physical imbalances include thyroid issues, glands, sore throats, laryngitis, incessant coughing, TMJ, ear infections, neck and shoulder pain. Emotional imbalances include issues of selfexpression through communication, both spoken or written. Fear of no power or choice. No willpower or being out of control.
The lesson of this chakra is to speak up and let your voice be heard. Remedy: Rub the Blue Light Matrix Oil around your throat and neck area to invite balance. This oil is also known as the physical rescue remedy and can be used to speed up any healing process. Use it 2 or 3 times a day.
6th or Third Eye Chakra Located in the middle of the eyebrows, in the center of the forehead. Physical imbalances include headaches, blurred vision, sinus issues, eyestrain, seizures, hearing loss, hormone function. Emotional imbalances include issues with moodiness, loneliness, volatility, introversion, introspection and judgmental. An inability to look at one’s own fears, and to learn from others. Day-dream often and live in a world with exaggerated imagination. When this chakra is balanced we feel clear, focused, and can determine between truth and illusion. We trust our intuition and are open to receiving wisdom and insight. The lesson of this chakra is to see the big picture. Remedy: Use the Indigo Light Matrix oil in your bath, or rub it around your face and hairline twice a day. It can be used instead of a night cream, and is brilliant for easing sinus congestion..
When this chakra is balanced, we have free flowing of words, expression, communication. We are honest and truthful yet firm. We are good listeners.
Conscious Life Magazine
7th or Crown Chakra Located at the top of the head.
Physical imbalances include depression and grief, sensitivity to light, sound, environmental noise. Emotional imbalances include issues with self-knowledge and greater power. Imbalances arise from rigid thoughts on religion and spirituality, constant confusion, carry prejudices, “analysis paralysis. Fear of alienation.
When this chakra is balanced, we live in the present moment. We have an unshakeable trust in our inner guidance. The lesson of this chakra is to live mindfully. Remedy: Rub the Violet Light Matrix oil around your hairline and onto the forehead – or as a bath oil. Best used twice a day
If you are aware of more than one chakra being imbalanced or blocked. This is because when one is blocked, the other chakras begin to compensate and either become overactive or underactive. Remember we are human, so we always have issues to work through, be gentle with yourself, and use the supportive oils and/or our chakra candles to guide and help you through the process.

By Guylin van den Berg We often get asked about nutrition and what to use, when to eat, what to drink and so forth. We decided to put a few pointers together to make it easier to decipher and maybe help you set your own nutritional plan for before, during and after rides. Nutrition is all about keeping your energy levels topped up as best you can, so you can get from point A to B as efficiently as possible. No one wants the dreaded “Bonk”. If you have not yet experienced the “bonk”, wait, your time will come. It’s not if you will “bonk”, it’s when you will “bonk”. Try avoid this state of horribleness by experimenting what you like and also taking tips from the following sections.
Before Rides: The meal before a ride is very important as this is the energy that will supply your body with nutrients and all the good stuff for your ride. As people are different we always recommend trying different things and finding out what works for you. For instance, we have guys that race at professional level that will eat 3 hours before the start and again 1.5 hours before the race. We also know a few guys that will eat an hour before as their first meal of the morning. Both are right as they have found what works for them.
Conscious Life Magazine
Some Breakfast Ideas: • Oats always make the list, and you can add different ingredients in order to change it up, such as peanut butter, banana, apple, cinnamon, milk, and much more. • Eggs, for the riders that can stomach eggs early in the morning, this also keeps you quite full and can be made quite quickly. • Yoghurt and muesli, a much more refreshing breakfast and not as heavy as the others. • A tip would be to add an extra bit of your breakfast into a small Tupperware to take along for if you get hungry before the race/ride then you can snack on some of the breakfast from earlier.
On the Ride: This is the part where you keep your energy levels topped up and keep your body hydrated. Eating on the bike takes some practise, so make a mental note to eat something and getting used to taking food out the back pocket of your jersey.
A tip for beginners; if you are riding with food that has a wrapper, open the wrapper before starting your ride as it will make it easier to access and will be safer for you and the people around you. In terms of liquids, we have been using USN Purefit, a great range of awesome flavours that are refreshing and the range covers all areas of riding and levels of riding. For a light, hydrating drink, we use Enduro (low GI for slower release), for the harder sessions and races we use Pro Enduro (has BCAA which assists the body in absorbing all necessary minerals for repairing muscles and helping muscle growth) and for the most intense sessions, we use Epic Pro (includes all of the other ingredients and more). All the products are focused at sustaining energy release, helping your muscles to repair themselves as quickly as possible, reducing the chances of cramping and letting you get the best out of your ride.
Also a big focus is on recovery. Your body has maximum nutrient intake up to 30min post ride so make sure to use something like USN recover to put back all that you took out during the race or ride. This just helps for muscle healing and for feeling better the next day to conquer another ride.
We recommend trying new foods and sports drinks during training and not close to a race. Leading up to a race, changing nutrition is a sure way to ensure your body is confused and does not deliver the result you have training for. If some of you are interested in learning more, visit www.usn.co.za. Otherwise we are always available at guylin@azzuricycling.com to answer all your questions. Our team is always happy to help you get the most our of cycling!! Happy Cycling, remember, always be safe!
About Guylin I have been racing for 12 years, 4 years on the road before coming back to the mountain biking side. I focus on the longer ultramarathons on the South African circuit. Our races are average of 100km and take roughly 4-5 hours. I have competed in 5 Cape Epic’s with my best finish being 26th overall. I still love riding my bike every day and finishing off with a good coffee.
After the Ride: Usually after the ride we would use the Recover from USN as it is easily transportable and quick to mix, we would also take a hydrator, another product from USN that basically replenishes levels after the ride. Once back home we would look at a solid meal such as pasta and chicken or even some steak and veggies. We try mix our portions to include protein, carbs and veggies. Once again this is what works for us. You need to try and find out what your body likes and what will work for you.

Get Rid of Garden Pests Organically This guide has solutions for getting rid of annoying pests in the garden without harsh potentially harmful chemicals, plus some ideas for attracting beneficial insects. In my garden I use no chemicals, pellets, or sprays. I develop healthy soil through composting, mulching, and planting to attract the beneficial insects that hunt the bad bugs. Gardeners know to live with bugs and accept them for the value that they add. If they don’t add value, and attack our plants and our bodies, well, then they are dead to us (literally). Please join me for this round-up of projects to rid your garden and home of pests, organically! To me, having an organic garden means I accept some bugs that I don’t want. Like the ants who farm aphids on my broad beans and the yellow jackets who pester me at mealtime (because they gobble up those aphids. Ha! Take that ants!). I embrace spiders (not literally). Spiders eat mosquitoes and I really, really hate mosquitoes. I’m one of those people who those little bloodsuckers LOVE. And also one of those people whose mosquito bites swell into big, pink, goose eggs that drive me utterly insane. My first line of defense against mosquitoes are these inexpensive but very effective citronella CAndles!
Conscious Life Magazine
How to Make Citronella Candles If your favorite thing in the summer is warm nights outside, then likely one of your least favorite things is getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. Making citronella candles in cans is a great recycling project that is inexpensive and effective, much like the Soy Beeswax Jar Candles I made a few months back. I make plenty of candles to create a bug-free barrier around the patio so I can enjoy my warm breezes and summer cocktails in peace. They aren’t bad for adding atmosphere either! I’m not overly crazy for the smell of citronella, so I added a few additional scents to the latest batch: pine and mandarin orange. While the most effective candles will still be primarily citronella, feel free to add a few other fragrances the bugs won’t like such as eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint, and oregano.
Materials • • • • • • •
Cans A double boiler (or here is a handy candle making kit) Wax (soy wax, paraffin wax, old candles) Pre-waxed wicks with tabs (150mm / 6”) Citronella oil for candle making (use 1 oz per lb of wax) Other scents for candle making like pine, mandarin orange, eucalyptus, peppermint Hot glue gun
Conscious Life Magazine
Make it! •
Using the hot glue gun, affix the wicks to the bottom of the cans and press it firmly into the center. If you are using a larger can, add two or three wicks spaced
•
Assemble your double boiler and add wax or old candles in small pieces. Don’t worry so much about bits of wick or other specks in the wax as you won’t see them in the candles when they are done. Heat over medium heat until the wax is completely melted.
•
When the wax is melted it’s time to add the fragrance. Add 1 oz of citronella oil per pound of wax and augment the scent with 0.5 oz of other scents per pound. apart around the center.
•
Let the wax cool slightly and carefully pour into containers. I can usually gently maneuver my wicks to stay in the center as the wax cools, but if you are having trouble, secure the wicks with a chopstick or clothespin to keep them in line. Be careful not to disturb them too much and set them in a warm place to cool. Cooling slowly and completely will create the best looking candles.
•
If you get a depressed area around the wick when cooled, warm up some more wax and pour it into the void.
•
Allow your candle to cure for 48 hours undisturbed before burning. Then, when you fire it up, let the candle burn so that there is a full, wide pool of wax before you blow it out.
•
It is said that candles have a memory, so it’s best to let the first burn set the tone for all the rest. Decorate your candles by wrapping them in burlap, twine and/or yarn. Store them near the garden, deck, or patio so you can quickly light up when the pests start buzzing around.

REIKI A quantity that is almost impossible to define! Energy can never be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another. Among the familiar forms are heat energy, energy of motion, electrical energy, and sound energy. Reiki is a form of energy healing. This form of healing helps to maintain balance within, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Reiki is a form or spiritual or energy healing. It helps open up and remove blockages

The Buddhist Retreat Centre, where people of all religions, and none, come to experience peace and tranquility. How to Retreat The Buddhist Retreat Centre offers various types of retreats, ranging from those investigating Buddhist thought and philosophy, through to practice retreats where the emphasis is on meditation; as well as retreats featuring bird watching, cookery, drumming, pottery and photography. At first glance the latter might appear to be unrelated to Buddhism but even these retreats will contain some element of meditation, of mindful awareness, refracting the chosen subject matter through a Buddhist lens. People from all walks of life come to these retreats with a variety of motivations and expectations. Perhaps they want to deepen their meditation practice, to take some time out from a hectic working life; to reflect on a tense domestic situation; to consider the trajectory of their lives; to make a decision about a way forward. Maybe they just want to learn how to take a good photograph. Each person will have a different reason for going on a retreat. Different paths will have led them to this place. We all need to make an appointment with ourselves from time to time. To re-connect with who we are; to maintain balance; to recharge exhausted batteries. To make time to go on a retreat is a necessary and healthy step for anyone.
General Information The Centre has been established on an exquisite 125-hectare country estate near the village of Ixopo, KwaZuluNatal 90 kilometers south of Pietermaritzburg, one and a half hours’ drive from Durban. Set in hilly grasslands amongst dams, indigenous bush and forests, it overlooks one of the great valleys in the Umkomaas river system. CNN featured the BRC as one of the ten finest retreat centres in the world. It was awarded Natural Heritage status by President Nelson Mandela in recognition of its success in establishing indigenous vegetation on the property and providing habitats for wildlife to return, including the endangered Blue Swallow. It is a birder’s paradise with more 160 species recorded.
Walks lead to many interesting sites and viewpoints on the property, including evidence that Bushman lived there and Voortrekkers and Settlers passed through. In 2000, the BRC facilitated the founding of Woza Moya, the community-based NGO, located in Ufafa valley. It continues to support the organisation in a variety of ways.

IN HONOR OF WORLD ANIMAL DAY, GENEROUS WILDLIFE SUPPORTER AGREES TO MATCH ALL DONATIONS TO BRING RHINO POACHING WAR FILM TO THE SCREEN LOS ANGELES, CA (October 4, 2017) – Today, in honor of World Animal Day, a generous donor has agreed to match all contributions to a crowdfunding campaign for the film SIDES OF A HORN. Based on actual events, this dramatic film details the rhino poaching epidemic from the perspective of the three characters most directly affected: the ranger, the poacher, and the rhino. The short film is set to begin filming on location in South Africa in early-2018, and a feature-length adaptation is to follow. It is the first film to present an unbiased narrative of South Africa’s rhino poaching war. “The rhino poaching crisis is complex and the conversation around it must go beyond simple right and wrong,” notes the film’s writer and director Toby Wosskow. “That is why our story is crafted in a non-didactic way, exposing both sides of the struggle.” Wildlife crime is the world’s fourth largest illegal industry, and it is at an all-time high. A single rhino horn can fetch up to three hundred thousand U.S. dollars on the black market in China and Vietnam. By weight, it is worth more than gold or cocaine, and this demand in the Far East is fuelling a war on the ground in South Africa. The human death toll is rising, but it is the rhino that faces extinction. “It is a multi-billion dollar trade run by highly-organized international crime syndicates," explains Emmanuel Castis, South African Producer and Conservationist. “But it is the communities on the ground in South Africa that are being torn apart and, for the first time, their story will be told.”

SIDES OF A HORN will expose the social impact of the rhino horn trade in a similar way that BLOOD DIAMOND did for the diamond trade—humanizing those on the ground, creating awareness, and catalyzing positive change. The team of U.S. and South African filmmakers are partnering with influential conservationists and global organizations to release the film around the world with a direct call to action. The project will be filmed in the townships impacted by the crisis and in the game reserves that combat poaching on a daily basis. Months of research, countless hours on the ground, and relationships with local community leaders aid the team in keeping authenticity at the forefront of the project. Although the film is fully prepped for production, it is missing one key element: financing. The Kickstarter campaign launched 2 weeks ago on World Rhino Day and was shared by thousands across social media, inspiring a large amount of donations. It has since been awarded the prestigious 'Project We Love' badge and has been highlighted as the 'Featured Project' in Kickstarter's film category. However, funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, meaning that none of the donors will be charged and the filmmakers will not receive any funds unless the project reaches its entire goal. With 16 days left in the campaign and with the project being 41% funded, the filmmakers are hoping that today, in honor of World Animal Day, they can inspire a whole new wave of backers and reach their target. “This is a global problem, which is why we’re coming to a global community to raise the funds,” notes Wosskow. “The strength of the short film medium is the ability to tell vital, urgent stories and capture the public’s attention quickly on the Internet. And this story is as urgent as they come. We can stop this war and save this species, but the first step is awareness, so what better way to begin this journey than by inviting people from around the world to join our team.” To find out more information or to make a tax-deductible donation to the film, visit: www.rhinomovie.com

DOES YOUR PET SUFFER FROM STRESS AND ANXIETY? Our lives can often be very stressful and our pets are not excluded from this byproduct of our modern lifestyle. Some of the common causes of fear and stress in animals are: Unusual noises (thunder), unknown places (relocation), travelling, unusual places (visit to the vet or dog parlour), unusual odours, crowding, extreme temperatures, inconsistent handling, absence of their owner, excessive feeding etc. ECO-FEAR and ECO-TRAVEL have been lovingly designed to assist your furry friend when they are faced with anxious and fearful situations. It is completely natural and have not side-effects because we love animals, Naturally.
ITCHING & SCRATCHING? There is no doubt that dogs in particular have huge problems in relation to skin disease. There are many reasons why this is so. Some dogs have allergies to colorants and other additives in dog food; including the expensive brands, some have specific allergies to gluten, in particular, which is found in many cereals. Some dogs such as Staffies and Bull terriers have such a fine skin with very little hair to offer them as protection against external irritants including grasses, shampoos and the sun, that they are more seriously affected than many other breeds. Eco-Vet has a range of products that deal with various skin conditions. Please visit our website to see our full range, varying from skin conditioners to heart medication. Email us and we can assist you with choosing the right medicine for his condition. www.ecovet.co.za 0860 326 838 ecovet@ecovet.co.za

Because food is an important part of your stay Meals are part of the real surprises that the Antbear Lodge has to offer where home grown cooking is part of the deal. We like to use our own home grown organic vegetables and if we haven’t got, then we lean heavily on those local providers with similar attitudes to our own. Conny and Andrew both like cooking and are up to changing just about anything to suit tastes or philosophies. Our cooking experience is in part a journal, a record of events and memories expressed in recipes. In the course of our travels we have filed away many recipes and with them images of people and places and their lives. How food tastes has much to do with the associations we make and if you would like to hear the tales of our meals we would love to tell them.
Sustainable & responsible tourism is our social responsibility and what we do to give something back to our community and environment We believe in sustainable tourism and social responsibility. We live is a spectacularly beautiful place called the Drakensberg and our standard of living here is exceptional. But around us lie contrasts of poverty and lack of development. If we are to keep our way of life then it surely follows that we must do everything in our power to contribute to the upliftment and prosperity of this rural area. We believe that the future of South Africa is linked to the prosperity of the people, and that upliftment is linked to education. And as such we have chosen to support our local primary school called Vulakani Primary School.
Pet friendly accommodation Drakensberg One of the few pet-friendly places in the Drakensberg. Beautiful, vast views of the Drakensberg with plenty of ground for my dogs to roam. Walk for hours. Your dogs will be happy with lots of dams to swim in and horses to discover. If country life is for you and you would love to take your pet with you then Antbear Lodge is a great accommodation choice. Your hosts will advise you on all the activities available. Antbear Lodge prides itself on being both family-friendly and petfriendly.

The Energy Code by Dr Ela Manga We are facing a global personal and collective energy crisis. Being busy and exhausted is becoming a shared narrative of modern living. Energy is not just an expression of our physical health, but also of our mental and emotional functioning. The nature of digitally based modern lives means that our natural energy sources are constantly being tugged at and pulled on. The skill we require now is no longer balance, but rather integration. This requires an awareness of the natural laws that govern energy and ways we can harness stress in a positive way, at the same time staying centred in midst of chaos. This book is about bringing awareness to the basic laws and principles of energy by weaving together the science of western medicine, neuroscience, and eastern philosophy. It is the crystallisation of Dr. Ela Manga’s experience and insights gained in the cutting edge science of mindfulness based energy management. It is relevant for anyone who faces the challenge of supporting health and meaningful relationships while pursuing their passion and vocation.

PAWS R US (SA) is looking for INVESTORS – help us BUILD THE DREAM of our “HAPPY PLACE”! After 6 years in animal welfare/rescue, PAWS R US (SA) has moved into the LINBER KENNELS facility out in the Tarlton area, JHB. It is time to spread our wings, create a permanent home, and contribute more effectively to both the cause and effects linked to animal welfare/rescue in SA. Our dream is to build the LINBER KENNELS facility into a top-notch rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming haven for rescue dogs. We also want to establish a home-base for our EDUCATION campaigns, so that we can work with the youth in returning to the core value of COMPASSION and RESPECT for Self and All Life. To make this dream a reality, we need to BUY the LINBER KENNELS site. And to get that done, we need to find INVESTORS and PARTNERS who want to contribute to something greater than themselves, and help make a real, immediate and practical difference in a world that has lost its way. The PAWS R US (SA) TRUST has been created as a legal entity – and we now look to spread the net open wide and “go on the hunt” for kindred spirits who want to help build something GOOD. We need INVESTORS of the HEART and MIND – those who want to protect the vulnerable, educate the youth of tomorrow, and know that their investment has directly uplifted lives and communities. CONTACT: For all enquiries and details related to this search for INVESTORS, and the implications for each INVESTOR within the Trust, please email us on woof@pawsrus.co.za
