ed’s letter Hello Healthy friends So as the year draws to a close we can hopefully all sit back, put our feet up and chill for a few days or weeks. Since our last editions we have ‘adopted’ a little furr-baby, her name is Thembi-Child and she is an orphaned vervet monkey. She lives with Tracy Rowles from the Umsizi Umkomaas Vervet Rescue Centre. We have promoted her to taking charge of our PLAY TIME section of Child of the Universe Parenting and Montessori magazines. Then, a week ago we got a donation of cat food from Royal Canin, which we distributed to various feeding programs and shelters for cats. I am sure they are most grateful to have full little tummies. Thank you Royal Canin.
Whilst hunting down shelters we came across Pigs ‘n’ Paws and found out they have homed 150 unwanted pigs. These lucky piggies ended up in this shelter as people thought it was cute to have a pig as a pet, forgetting that they grow up. So we added another member to our team by ‘adopting’ a pig too… what next? A reindeer? It warms my heart to find that there are so many people out there who will give their last cent to care for, and feed abandoned animals. We would like to encourage you to offer them a little support. As always, Lisa is motivating us to get fit and shape up for summer, plus she adds yummy healthy recipes for your enjoyment. Paul from Vondis talks about feeding your cats a wholesome diet. If you are a cat person, you will appreciate how fussy they can be, and pretty much rule any home they have chosen as their own. We wish you all a safe and fantastic holiday season, and will catch up with you again next year. Enjoy the beach if you are headed for the coast, and remember your sunblock.

Catching up with ARNO CARSTENS
Arno is a legend. His fans know his music career details, as well as his songs of f by heart. So we decided to do an ‘interview’ in picture format. We love colour and apparently so does Arno the artist.
GETTING TO KNOW ARNO How old were you when you found your calling to be a musician? I think by 14 I knew it was something I could do with great joy and also with a degree of success. With a background in choir singing which taught me vocal control, and basic guitar knowledge, plus a great love and admiration for creative rock and pop, it was no stretch to see myself doing it for a living Who inspired or influenced your love of music? My family introduced me to a fast landscape of beautiful sounds and energy How did you handle the nerves when you first went on stage and do you still get nervous? The stage fright I have now is the same as 20 years ago Did you expect this extent of fame when you did your first gig? No, we never really thought much about a future or fame of any sorts, except having loads of fun while making music with a gang of friends What was the biggest challenge you faced along the way and how did you overcome it? After the initial success years and the inevitable come down, it became clear there’s more to it than just having a good party. So it was reinvention, adapt or die. You know, real life came to bite me in the ass. Today I’m more aware of the rhythm of things, I just care a lot less Are you a Dynamic Dad? (Yes we know you are) and what quality would you like Hayden to grow up with that you have taught him? I’d like him to be a well-rounded comfortable in his own skin kind of person that’s thoughtful of others
We are itching to know, how do you fit in a career and having a family? What does a typical day/week in the life of Arno Carstens look like? Well when I work I’m not home, so that consists of travel, sound checks and shows. But when I’m home it’s doing some kind of work out then me and my son on the beach or puppet shows or having a barbecue just having fun Do you have a particular cause or charity which is close to your heart, or that you support? (We will give them exposure in this same edition) Yes, I support the Mad Foundation. I was introduced to it by François Pienaar, and they do amazing work You are a strong advocate for SA Music, which we can completely agree with as we have huge amounts of local talent. What are your dreams for our local industry and how can we all help to lift this industry up? In a perfect world Arts and Culture SA, radio and artists should all be connected in some way to show-case what is a diverse cool culture, but I find it to be a bit of a headless chicken. We need constructive development to become world players, just like Australia and Ireland did. This has been taking far to long. It lacks vision and leadership from top government levels to the bottom What are your guilty pleasures? How do you relax, do you have any special treats for yourself? Like pigging out on chocolate or going fishing? I love all forbidden fruit with a passion and try and live life to the fullest with out hurting myself
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Do you have any hobbies? Do you watch or play any sport? My hobbies are writing music, painting, tennis, running and having fun ‘ANOTHER UNIVERSE’ (MY FAVE, ALWAYS WITHIN REACH) What do the terms ‘Galaxy of Blues’ and ‘Universe’ mean to you? Its the meeting between reality and the fantasy of escapism
What talents do you have besides your music? I’m thin on talent but big on persistence and optimism Were you a ‘normal’ student or did you drive your teachers mad? A bit of both. Things went a bit pear shape but I had a guardian angel that sort of kept me on the straight and crooked narrow 4 items on your bucket list? I’ve done a lot of cool things so I don’t really have a bucket list. There are still some countries I wanna visit, plus maybe experience a visitation by an alien or extra dimensional being What are you currently reading and what are your 4 favourite books? I’m now reading ‘Magicians of the Gods’. I love ‘Elephant to Hollywood’ by Michael Caine’, ‘King Solomon's Mines’ and ‘Joernaal van Jorik’ Top 10 Favourite SA Bands? Rabbitt, Via Afrika, No Friends of Harry ,Evoid, Johnny Clegg, TKZ, Bongo Muffin, Sugardrive, Battery 9, François Van Coke
Who would you LOVE to perform on stage with? The Doors
Plans for the future – where do you see yourself 15 years from now? I’m doing some heavy music and some electronic stuff. I’m doing my first Afrikaans album next year plus a new art exhibition. I see myself in 16 years just enjoying myself through creating art . In closing, what advice do you have for striving musicians? Believe in yourself, listen and learn from others. Keep an open mind and be brave.

Did you know the month of January is considered "Divorce Month"? By Paula Quinsee Statistics show that the month of January is known as divorce month as it has the highest number of divorces filed in the year. Some have even taken it one step further to show that "D-Day" is the first Monday after the kids return to school". There are a multitude of reasons why people wait until January, but the decision is most common in families with children. Most couples say they were struggling with their marriage before the holiday season. If they have children, the holidays are supposed to be a magical time, so they commit to giving the kids one last happy holiday as an intact family. By January, if it's still not working, they know it's time to move on... Don't let this happen to your relationship. Attend the Relationship Dynamics Workshop on 31 Oct and get tools and skills to equip you to manage the speed bumps with ease. I have had my own personal relationship challenges, just like you so you could say "I get it". I've walked the path so it made sense to combine my professional training with my own personal experience and insights which equips me to provide you with compassionate, insightful and useful mentoring, support and coaching. Grounding Techniques For Empaths
by Diane Kathrine,
For Empaths and Sensitives, in these trying times, it is a challenge for us to stay grounded as we are constantly being bombarded with a real mix of negative, external emotions. Even if we stay home and don’t venture out of our personal sanctuaries, our empathic antennas are picking up so much of the pain from the outside world. Because of this we can easily become consumed with depression, listlessness and apathy and lose sight of what our roles here are to do. All of the following techniques have been tried and tested by yours truly and I can attest to the benefits of them, although I have to say on the darker days, especially when there is a lot of solar activity, even these techniques don’t always clear the emotional debris. By Lee-anne Lovejoycourage I think we can all agree that our lives seem to be spent in a state of constant motion. The idea of taking time for yourself to nurture body and soul seems indulgent and perhaps even selfish. This is especially true if you have family or others that depend on your time and energy in some way. It’s easy to feel depleted or overwhelmed. Ideally, regular me-time or holidays away should be a part of your life, but realistically, this might not be practical at the moment. Something to consider for a 5 minute chillout is a crystal meditation. Because we are focussing on relaxing here - you don’t have to know the exact use of the crystal you choose. Choose a stone with the most relaxing feel to it. Be guided by this feeling.. chances are you will choose a blue or green stone, something pale and slightly translucent, like ocean waves or a calm lake or the sky on a Spring day. Blue is best for calming. Hold your crystal loosely in your left hand before beginning the meditation. Sit upright but relaxed with both feet on the ground. Breathe deeply for three breaths. On your last breath, empty your lungs completely and sigh deeply. Then look at the crystal that you are holding. Notice its colour, shape and weight. Can you see through it or not? Does it have patterns or shapes hidden in it? Close your eyes but still “see” the stone
. Visualize your in-breath coming through the stone and into your mouth and down your airways into your lungs. See the inbreath picking up the colour of your crystal and swirling into your body. Through your mouth or nose, down your airways, into your lungs, then into your bloodstream and into your limbs until your whole body is surrounded and filled with a soft and soothing pale blue or green glow. Continue to breathe the colour until you can feel lighter and calmer. Focus only on your breath and the colour. When you are ready, you can breathe out the colour, visualise your body returning to normal and the colour running down your feet and into the Earth. I there is any residual tension in any area of your body, see this tension as black tendrils, see them running off you and disappearing into the ground. Feel both feet on the ground. Open your eyes. Make a promise to yourself to take time out to replenish yourself as often as you need to. If you don’t have a crystal handy, any stone will do if you visualise the colour which soothes you most. All stones are healers (but more about that in the future).
Look after your eyes Take action - regular eye examinations are a must Do you find it increasingly difficult to read books with small print, prices on products, or registration numbers when you’re on the road? You are not alone. Eye problems tend to be more common among older people, and ageing can induce eye conditions that cause vision loss. The good news is that serious vision loss and blindness may be prevented through regular eye examinations, early detection and timely treatment.
COMMON EYE PROBLEMS DRY EYES When tear glands can’t make enough tears, or produce poor quality tears, dry eyes can be the result. This eye condition can be extremely uncomfortable, causing itching, scratching and burning. Your chances of developing dry eyes increase with age. Take action: Your doctor may suggest anti-inflammatory medication, special eye drops, lid massage therapy, humidifying the air in your home, omega3 supplements, and/or surgery. The treatment will depend on the cause. AGE-RELATED CATARACTS Cataracts are cloudy areas that cover part of, or the entire, lens of the eye and often form slowly, causing no pain, redness or tearing in the eye. Take action: Some cataracts stay small and will not affect eyesight. But if they become large or thick, they have to be removed with minor surgery. If you experience blurred, cloudy or misty vision, be sure to go for an eye examination.
AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION This eye problem has a genetic link, but can also be fuelled by smoking, certain dietary factors and over-exposure to high levels of ultraviolet light. It can lead to vision loss and blindness among adults aged 50 and older. Take action: There is no cure for agerelated macular degeneration, but some treatments may delay its progression or even improve vision - another reason to regularly get your eyes examined. GLAUCOMA This condition develops when the optic nerve that transmits visual information from the eye to the brain is damaged. It’s also often accompanied by an increase in the pressure in the eye, and can lead to blindness if not treated. Take action: It’s very important to get your eyes checked by an eye care professional regularly, especially since most affected people don’t display any symptoms until it’s too late. Glaucoma can not be cured, but treatments like eye drops, oral medication, laser therapy and/or surgery can help delay progression of the disease. CORNEAL DISEASES The cornea, the clear, dome-shaped front of the eye, is highly susceptible to disease, infection, injury and exposure to toxic agents. These factors can all damage the cornea and cause eye redness, tearing, pain, and reduced vision. Take action: Diagnosed with a corneal disease? Your doctor may adjust your eyeglass prescription, advise you to use medicated eye drops, or suggest surgery

Five things you can do today to secure your financial future The decisions you make today regarding your personal finance and investments can determine your financial situation in a few years’ time. How can you make sure that your future will be stable and secure? Here are some key tips for your life-defining financial decisions. 1. Save Pursue a job with good benefits and make the most of them. Make sure you understand the tax benefits, the retirement benefits and the health insurance options if there are any. If you are in a relationship or are getting married, keep actively involved in the financial decisions. Also, understand the financial consequences of divorce and carefully protect your interests if you should leave a marriage. And most importantly, save! Save as much as you can, as early as you can.
2. Pay off your debt Making smart decisions about debt can be more important than making smart investing decisions. Avoid accumulating credit-card debt and keep your credit record in the best possible shape to qualify for the lowest interest rates on your car and home loans. Debt is one area where diversification is not your friend. Consolidating your debt on the lowest interest rate would be the best decision. If that is impossible, start by paying off the debt with the highest interest rate and work your way down to your debt with the lowest interest rate.
3. Buy property Buying a home is a decision that should not be taken lightly. In fact, a poor decision with regard to a home purchase can drastically alter your financial future. It might be best to wait with buying your first home until you are in your 30s. That way you can first build up savings and you are sure about where you want to live permanently. When you purchase a home before you’ve built other savings, your total financial asset portfolio is highly undiversified. And you don’t necessarily want to tie yourself to your current community. This can limit your future job opportunities to your current city.
4. Insure Insurance is a key aspect of financial security. The type of insurance you need depends on your particular circumstances. The best insurance lesson is to insure against catastrophic losses, regardless of the probability. It is important to be prepared when it comes to your car, home and home contents insurance.
5. Understand risk One of the major impacts on your life is how you deal with risk. Would you rather work for a tried and proven company with a strong benefits package, a smaller start-up with great opportunities to buy stocks in the company or start your own business? The potential payoffs escalate as you take on more risk, but so do the possibilities for disaster. The same is true for investments. Make sure your risks are ageappropriate. If you're young, you can dust yourself off and start again. For people over 40, the ability to absorb losses diminishes as retirement nears or as responsibilities grow. When making financial decisions, don’t be afraid to ask for guidance. Speak to an Indwe advisor today to get sound advice on your personal insurance. Make sure your future is secure by acting today.

SOUL CONNECTIONS
A soul connection is a resonance between two people who respond to the essential beauty of each other's individual natures, behind their facades, and who connect on this deeper level. This kind of mutual recognition provides the catalyst for a potent alchemy. It is a sacred alliance whose purpose is to help both partners discover and realize their deepest potentials. While a heart connection lets us appreciate those we love just as they are, a soul connection opens up a further dimension ~~ seeing and loving them for who they could be, and for who we could become under their influence. This means recognizing that we both have an important part to play in helping each other become more fully who we are. A soul connection not only inspires us to expand, but also forces us to confront whatever stands in the way of that expansion. The more two people open to each other, the more this wide-openness also brings to the surface all the obstacles to it: their deepest, darkest wounds, their desperation and mistrust, and their rawest emotional trigger points. Just as the sun's warmth causes clouds to arise by prompting the earth to release its moisture, so love's pure openness activates the thick clouds of our emotional wounding, the tight places where we are shut down, where we live in fear and resist love. The light of unconditional love awakens the dormant seed potentials of the soul, helping them ripen, blossom, and bear fruit, allowing us to bring forth the unique gifts that are ours to offer in this life. heart emoticon By John Welwood
Traits of an Empath or Infinite Being
1. Knowing: Empaths just know stuff, without being told. It’s a knowing that goes way beyond intuition or gut feelings, even though that is how many would describe the knowing. The more attuned they are the stronger this gift becomes.
(The Violet Light Matrix Oil will enhance these abilities)
2. Being in public places can be overwhelming: Places like shopping malls, supermarkets or stadiums where there are lots of people around can fill the empath with turbulently vexed emotions that are coming from others.
3. Feeling others emotions and taking them on as your own: This is a huge one for empaths. To some they will feel emotions off those near by and with others they will feel emotions from those a vast distance away, or both. The more adept empath will know if someone is having bad thoughts about them, even from great distance. We are ALL far more empathetic that we know. (The Coral Light Matrix oil will support you) 4. Watching violence, cruelty or tragedy on the TV is unbearable: The more attuned an empath becomes the worse it is and may make it so they eventually have to stop watching TV and reading newspapers altogether.
5. You know when someone is not being honest: If a friend or a loved one is telling you lies you know it (although many empaths try not to focus on this because knowing a loved one is lying can be painful). Or if someone is saying one thing but feeling/thinking another, you know. 6. Picking up physical symptoms off another: An empath will almost always develop the ailments off another (colds, eye infections, body aches and pains) especially those they’re closest to, somewhat like sympathy pains. 98% of what we feel is not ours, but has been picked up from others. 7. Digestive disorders and lower back problems: The solar plexus chakra is based in the centre of the abdomen and it’s known as the seat of emotions. This is where empaths feel the incoming emotion of another, which can weaken the area The Yellow Light Matrix oil will strengthen this centre.
8. Always looking out for the underdog: Anyone whose suffering, in emotional pain or being bullied draws an empath’s attention and compassion. 9. Others will want to offload their problems on you, even strangers: An empath can become a dumping ground for everyone else’s issues and problems, which, if they’re not careful can end up as their own. 10. Constant fatigue: Empaths often get drained of energy, either from energy vampires or just taking on too much from others, which even sleep will not cure. Many get diagnosed with ME. The Red oil will boost your energy. 11. Addictive personality: Alcohol, drugs, sex, food, work and stress are to name but a few addictions that empaths turn to, to block out the emotions of others. It is a form of self protection in order to hide from someone or something. Try using the Gold Oil to tap into your own wisdom.
12. Drawn to healing, holistic therapies and all things metaphysical: Although many empaths would love to heal others they can end up turning away from being healers (even though they have a natural ability for it), after they’ve studied and qualified, because they take on too much from the one they are trying to heal. Especially if they are unaware of their empathy.
15. Need for solitude: An empath will go stir-crazy if they don’t get quiet time. This is even obvious in empathic children.
Anything of a supernatural nature is of interest to empaths and they don’t surprise or get shocked easily. Even at the revelation of what many others would consider unthinkable, for example, empaths would have known the world was round when others believed it was flat.
The Blue oil helps with focus and the Yellow oil assists with assimilating information.
13. Creative: From singing, dancing, acting, drawing or writing an empath will have a strong creative streak and a vivid imagination. 14. Love of nature and animals: Being outdoors in nature is a must for empaths and pets are an essential part of their life.
16. Gets bored or distracted easily if not stimulated: Work, school and home life has to be kept interesting for an empath or they switch off from it and end up daydreaming or doodling.
17. Finds it impossible to do things they don’t enjoy: As above. Feels like they are living a lie by doing so. To force an empath to do something they dislike through guilt or labeling them as idle will only serve in making them unhappy. It’s for this reason many empaths get labeled as being lazy.
18. Strives for the truth: This becomes more prevalent when an empath discovers his/her gifts and birthright. Anything untruthful feels plain wrong.
19. Always looking for the answers and knowledge: To have unanswered questions can be frustrating for an empath and they will endeavor to find an explanation. If they have a knowing about something they will look for confirmation. The downside to this is an information overload. 20. Likes adventure, freedom and travel: Empaths are free spirits. 21. Abhors clutter: It makes an empath feel weighed down and blocks the flow of energy. 22. Loves to daydream: An empath can stare into space for hours, in a world of their own and blissfully happy. 23. Finds routine, rules or control, imprisoning: Anything that takes away their freedom is debilitating to an empath even poisoning.
24. Prone to carry weight without necessarily overeating: The excess weight is a form of protection to stop the negative incoming energies having as much impact. Use of the Pink or Coral oils will help you to accept and love yourself exactly as you are. 25. Excellent listener: An empath won’t talk about themselves much unless it’s to someone they really trust. They love to learn and know about others and genuinely care. 26. Intolerance to narcissism: Although kind and often very tolerant of others, empaths do not like to be around overly egotistical people, who put themselves first and refuse to consider another’s feelings or points of view other than their own.
27. The ability to feel the days of the week: An empath will get the ‘Friday Feeling’ if they work Fridays or not. They pick up on how the collective are feeling. The first couple of days of a long, bank holiday weekend (Easter for example) can feel, to them, like the world is smiling, calm and relaxed. Sunday evenings, Mondays and Tuesdays, of a working week, have a very heavy feeling. 28. Will not choose to buy antiques, vintage or secondhand: Anything that’s been preowned carries the energy of the previous owner. An empath will even prefer to have a brand new car or house (if they are in the financial situation to do so) with no residual energy. Clear old stale or negative energy with the Angel of Illumination spray. 29. Sense the energy of food: Many empaths don’t like to eat meat or poultry because they can feel the vibrations of the animal (especially if the animal suffered), even if they like the taste.
30. Can appear moody, shy, aloof, disconnected: Depending on how an empath is feeling will depend on what face they show to the world. They can be prone to mood swings and if they’ve taken on too much negative will appear quiet and unsociable, even miserable. An empath detests having to pretend to be happy when they’re sad, this only adds to their load (makes working in the service industry, when it’s service with a smile, very challenging) and can make them feel like scuttling under a stone. If you can say yes to most or all of the above then you are most definitely an empath. Empaths are having a particularly difficult time at the present time, picking up on all the negative emotions that are being emanated into the world from the populace.

So often so many sit with their arms folded, with a knowledgeable and disparaging air about them, and complain about what is happening around them and how terrible things are. What they do not realise is that to bring change about, we need to become part of the solution and not continue to be part of the problem. If you want things to change then begin by changing what is happening in your world. Words like peace, abundance, transparency and integrity are bandied around and yet many have no idea of what they actually mean and how to go about bringing this into their lives. Before you point fingers at others take a step backwards and look at what is happening in your life. How peaceful is your home environment? Do you live in a family where each and every member is treated with respect and consideration or do you live in a house where no one really cares about anyone else? Do you spend quality time together or do you really only share a roof over your head and no one actually cares what anyone else is doing or perhaps going through? Do you speak to each other with love and care or do you shout and scream to make your point heard? Do you merely tolerate certain members of your family group because they provide the finances to keep you going and you just expect that to happen each month, or do you show gratitude for what you are receiving and how difficult it might be for the providers to meet these demands each month?
By changing the little piece that is our world, we can start to change things on a greater level. If each and every one of us ensured that our world was peaceful, that we lived in abundance, consciousness and always worked with transparency and integrity, as well as respected everyone and everything, this world would change. So begin with you. The only way to teach and change others is to lead by example. Change your mind set which will change your energy and then spread that wonderful positive feeling to all around you by living who you truly are. Acknowledge that you are an amazing and Divine Being carrying the God Spark within you and then live your life as such!
be the change you want to see!

MAKE ANGELS PART OF YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE!!
“Peace begins with me. The more peaceful I am inside, the more peace I have to share with others. World peace really does begin with me.” —LOUISE HAY So many of you wonderful people are out there making a difference in the world or doing something to care for others in your own way. Too often, there are moments of exhaustion or forgetfulness of purpose. Practicing getting in touch with our bountiful inner being allows us to continue to be filled with unconditional love. The strength that comes from this allows us to increase positive change in the world. Through self-awareness and understanding of ourselves may we free our mind, body, and spirit. When we reciprocate love and truly come to love ourselves we nurture prosperity for all. When we re-enforce negative information and negative behavior or thought patterns we are allowing that negativity to spread and prosper, thus convincing our subconscious mind that we desire these things. The Universe will support what you choose to believe about yourself and the world around you. Everything we say is an affirmation. In order to support others we must first look at ourselves. Release criticism and judgement. When we are ready to let go, it’s amazing how small or how great the circumstance changes in order to maintain harmony. Consider this heart thought below as we spiritually grow: In the Aquarian Age we are learning to go within to find our savior. We are the power we are looking for. Each one of us is totally linked with the Universe and with Life. This world is our heaven on earth. I see a community of spiritually-minded souls who come together to share, grow and radiate their energies into the world—each one free to pursue his or her activity and drawn together to better fulfill each individual’s purpose. We live together harmoniously, lovingly, peacefully, expressing God in our lives and our living. We establish a world where the nurturing of soul growth is the most important activity, where this is the world of the individual. There is ample time and opportunity for creative expression in whatever area we choose. There will be no labor and no concern for earning money. All that we need will be able to express through the powers within. Education will be a process of remembering that which we already know and bring to conscious awareness. There is no dis-ease, no poverty, no crime, and no deceit. The world of the future begins now, right here, with all of us. And so it is.
Life loves you, and so do I!

help yourself to health naturally
By Lisa Raleigh
The approaching holidays mean plenty of delicious – and typically indulgent – dinners. Here are some great tips to keep in mind when dining out during the festive season. Halve Your Plate: • Whether it’s just a snack or you’re all sharing tapas at the dinner table, dish up your helping every time you eat. • Picking food straight from a huge assortment of food options can distort your idea of portions. Dishing up your helping helps you total the amount of food you’re taking in.
• If you don’t feel like healthifying your pizza or saying no to your favourite burger, simply halve your portion. • Cutting your meal in two immediately and serving the adjusted portion with a side of roasted veggies and salad is a great way to enjoy your favourite meal without overloading on calories. • As a general rule, your plate should be 50% veggies/salad, 20% carbs and 30% protein.
Look The Part:
Don’t drink your calories:
Plate Your Portion:
• If you’re on your way to a festive function, snack healthily beforehand. Arriving hungry to an indulgent dinner often means over-dishing and over-eating. • Curbing a ravenous appetite beforehand with a piece of fruit or some raw nuts means a more rational approach to the dinner table.
• No matter how disciplined your eating is, drinking your calories will undo your hard work. • Cocktails are a huge caloric expense, and normal alcoholic drinks range from between 110-220 calories a pop. • If alcohol is a must at dinner time, factor it into your eating plan. Treat each unit as one carb allocation, and restrict your carbs both on the day and after the event for a more balanced intake. • This goes for non-alcoholic drinks too! Soft drinks, iced teas and fizzy fruit juices are packed with nonnutritive calories. As a general rule, if it’s not alcoholic – stick to water.
Stock Up On Protein:
Skip The Extras
• Wearing something form-fitting is one of the easiest ways to make sure you don’t overindulge. • Opt for clothes that are tight around the midsection and you’ll be more inclined to skip seconds.
Don’t Leave The House Hungry:
• Even if it hasn’t been prepared in the healthiest way, upping your usual ratio of protein to carbs at the dinner table means fewer calories and cravings overall. • Meat proteins in particular take the body longer to digest, meaning you’ll eat less and be fuller for longer.
• There’s no need for bread or starters if you’re ordering a main meal. • If starters are a must, order a starter for your main as well – chances are you’ll already be fuller than you realize. • Two starters as a main is a great option in general, as the portions are usually significantly smaller and aren’t carb-heavy.
Get fussy:
Italian:
• Restaurants are becoming more and more sensitive to specialized orders. Ask if you can swap the starch for veggies, ask for the dressing on the side, and ask to take the cheese or basting off your burger.
• There is always going to be some indulgence with bread- and pasta-heavy Italian – this is all about portion size. • Have a look at focaccias versus the pizzas – they’re often just as delicious and half the cheese and calories, as well as more fresh, raw toppings. Adding extras like rocket and avo to your pizza can add some fresh nutrients as well. • Go for pesto or tomato-based sauces versus creamy ones. • Or order your favourite meal and just have a third of it, supplemented with salad or greens.
Mexican: • Mexican meals can be packed with beans and legumes, tomato salsa and guacamole. • Skip the sour cream and the grated cheese and your meal could have some real nutritional value. • Eat half the starch on the item you order, therefore doubling up on the toppings.
Moroccan: • Moroccan-style tapas can be great health-wise, as you can pick and choose every aspect of your meal. • Opt for the high-protein and veggie options, try pass on anything crumbed or deep-fried. • Limit sides of bread or chips.
Sushi and Thai food: • Sushi is a wonderful option: you’ve got steamed rice, seaweed, heart-healthy seafood and raw veggies. • Skip the tempura prawn items and those with big blobs of mayonnaise on top. Make use of the low sodium soya sauce. • Go crazy on the sashimi! Salmon is your best seafood option on the sushi menu, with tuna hot on its heels. • Thai dishes can be highly nutritious as well – often packed with rice, egg and lots of veggies. • Avoid any proteins labeled as ‘crispy’, and any ‘sweet’, ‘sticky’ or ‘plum’ sauces. Thai green curry is always a great option.
Greek: • This is one of the greatest options, as there are plenty of fresh vegetables, yoghurt and tapas on offer. • Tapas options let you cut out unnecessary carbs and fried items – opt for pesto's, olives, veggie – and spinach items specifically – where possible. • It’s hard to resist, but limit your intake of pastries.
Indian: • Stick to rice versus naan and rotis, which are usually made and basted with butter and ghee. • Curry is always going to be calorie-heavy, so watch your portions. Either skip the carbs that accompany it or reduce your portion size. • Avoid curries that are bulked up with potatoes as this means double carbs. • Opt for poultry versus red meat, where the fattier cut of meat is usually used. • Make use of the condiments that accompany curry, like sambals, pickled vegetables, yoghurt and coriander, for a nutrient boost.
Western: • This is one of your easiest menus to healthify, as it is typically a protein-based meal with your choice of side. • Choose salad over chips – watch out for veggie options like butternut and creamed spinach, which can be just as calorie-dense as carbs. • Burgers need not be a calorie-splurge. Skip the bun (or at least half of it) and fatty extras like cheese, sauce and bacon, rather opting for salad garnish, rocket and avo. • http://www.lisaraleigh.co.za

Caprese Egg Muffins Ingredients: (makes 10-12 depending on muffin tin size and egg size) 1 dozen eggs ½ teaspoon Himalayan rock salt Nonstick cooking spray, to coat pans 1 punnet fresh basil, sliced 1 punnet (250g) sliced rosa tomatoes, cut into quarters 1 tub basil pesto 300g block of grated SPAR mozzarella cheese
Method: • • • •
Preheat the oven to 190C. Crack eggs into a bowl. Whisk the eggs and salt together. Grease a 12-cup muffin pan with spray. Divide basil, rosa tomatoes, and cheese between each muffin cup, then carefully pour eggs over tops until muffin tins are almost full (leave 1/4-inch space). Add a dollop of basil pesto to the top of each muffin Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean. The egg muffins will look like soufflé when they come out of the oven, but they will sink after a few minutes. Let them rest in the muffin tin for a few minutes before using a rubber spatula to carefully remove each muffin. Consume immediately or let cool and transfer to a re-sealable plastic bag. Refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for a month.
Bai Char (Meaning fried rice in Khmer) Ingredients: (to serve 2 people) 1 T chia seeds 1 scoop vanilla protein powder 1 cup unsweetened almond milk 1 t stevia ¼ cup goji berries / fresh berries of your choice
Method: • Dry fry your sunflower seeds in a pan, tossing them often and watching very carefully – they can burn in moments! • Once roasted, transfer to another bowl and add coconut oil to the pan, then lightly fry your veggies on a very hot heat • After a few minutes, add in the cooked rice, the soya sauce, fresh chilli, then stir further. • Add in the roasted seeds. • When suitably cooked, set aside • In another pan, fry your eggs to your liking in a little coconut oil. • Whilst the eggs are frying pack your rice mixture tightly in a small breakfast bowl • Turn your larger serving bowl upside down over the smaller bowl and then invert so that the smaller bowl is now upside down on top of the larger serving bowl. Remove the bowl gently to make sure the dome shape is maintained. • Gently place your fried egg on top of your dome. • Serve with dried chilli flakes and slices of fresh lime • Add Himalayan rock salt to taste and – voila!

A Future without Epilepsy The ketogenic diet (KD) is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate and adequate protein diet which is considered a well-established treatment for refractory epilepsy with the indications thereof continuously expanding, particularly in the neurometabolic field (Hallbrook et al., 2015) KetoVOLVETM 4:1 (from Nutr-e-volution (Pty) Ltd) is a powdered dietary formula designed for individuals following the ketogenic diet. The product assists with adherence to the diet and at the same time prevent side effects often associated therewith. KetoVOLVETM 4:1 has a 4:1 ketogenic ratio, meaning that there are 4 grams of fat for every 1 gram of carbohydrates and protein combined. The high fat content of the product increases its efficacy, as it forces the brain to use fat (in the form of ketones) instead of glucose (as when on a high starch diet) which alleviates seizure frequency. KetoVOLVETM is unique in that it contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) as well as longchain triglycerides (LCT) which are two different fat sources. MCT provides the brain with additional and quick releasing ketones which assist in the alleviation of seizure frequency and does not affect blood cholesterol levels. MCT oil also prevents constipation often associated with the KD, because the diet is very low in fibre containing foods. LCT increases the fat content of the product, thus ensuring the provision of essential fatty acids for optimal brain development and the prevention of inflammation (Dupuis et al., 2015).
KetoVOLVETM 4:1 is designed in such a way that it provides adequate quantities of protein to ensure optimal growth and development. The protein source in the product is whey protein, which is associated with increased gastric emptying, allowing patients to have frequent meals, preventing weight loss in underweight individuals. The protein, which is a milk protein, is also associated with improved sleep and the prevention of depression through the increased formation of melatonin (sleep hormone) and serotonin (feel good hormone) (Choi et al., 2009). The KD does not allow for the intake of a great variety of foods which means that the diet is inadequate of vitamins and minerals. KetoVOLVETM 4:1 is supplemented with vitamins and minerals for the prevention of deficiencies (when consumed in adequate quantities) and ensures optimal health and development. Even though KetoVOLVETM 4:1 is a ketogenic product, it does contain a source of carbohydrates in the form of maltodextrin. Due to the small quantities thereof in KetoVOLVETM it does not lead to rapidly increased blood glucose levels and does not pose any health risks. Elzette Bothma, a registered dietician specifically trained in the ketogenic diet, states that the KD should always be implemented with medical supervision or guidance. She further states that KetoVOLVETM 4:1 is an exceptional product, which can be used as the sole source of nutrition in individuals from 1 to 8 years of age or as a ketogenic dietary supplement in those older than 8 years. It is clear that the product was designed to prevent the side-effects often associated with the KD and to implement the diet with effectiveness and ease, while at the same time deliver the most benefits for epileptic individuals. MOTHER LAUNCHES HER OWN READY-MADE FOOD COMPANY TO SUPPORT HER DAUGHTER’S GLUTEN INTOLERANCE My daughter was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis| Inflammatory Bowel Disease last year. In our search to find a cure it was recommended by doctors that she cuts out all wheat from her diet. The result of this was that my daughter was left with very little to eat. There is not an abundance of prepared READY made meals available in SA, which is very surprising as there are so many people that are gluten intolerant. The only available gluten free products available are dry foods such as pastas and breads. Of course if you had to go buy these expensive products, you still have to cook the food.
Available at selected stores. See website
This lead me to develop my own company, hoping to help people like my daughter and inspire change in our own diets as well. To your health! Francisca Cell: 0829017744

How To Make Lavender Lemonade To Get Rid Of Headaches & Anxiety by Joe Martino.
So many people suffer from anxiety and headaches these days. I believe this to be a mixture of our lifestyles and many of the changes that are taking place in our world that are pushing people to question what we’ve been doing as a society repetitively for many years. You know what I mean… that feeling that there is something more than just going to work, making money, coming home, eating and repeating it all. It may sound cliché, but it’s evident. Deep down we can feel it, that something isn’t quite “right” with our world anymore and there’s a certain sense of freedom from it all that is calling us from deep within ourselves. Not knowing what that feeling is exactly or what to do, we sometimes will feel anxiety or overwhelm as we look at our lives. How do we deal with these things? There are a number of actions we can take to address the core issue which you can explore here.
It’s important that we begin to explore this feeling inside. That knowing that things can be different, that our world doesn’t have to be the way it is. Whether it is people getting fed up with the 9 – 5, feeling disconnected from themselves and others or feeling the desire to do what we love and are passionate about, our patience with avoiding these things is continuously growing thin. It’s time, it’s time to explore it! Other than inspiring people to begin that exploration and letting them know “you’re not crazy, many people are feeling this too,” I also wanted to share something simple that can aid us while we are making more longterm adjustments.
Lavender Lemonade Pure lavender oil is an incredible essential oil to use for your own health and wellness. It’s among the gentlest of essential oils, but also one of the most powerful, making it a favorite of households for the healing properties and uses of lavender essential oil. Lavender oil has a chemically complex structure with over 150 active constituents, which explains its effectiveness at helping with a lot of health ailments. Lavender oil possesses amazing anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antidepressant, antiseptic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, analgesic, detoxifier, hypotensive, and sedative properties. Florida researchers have found that lavender oil benefits include reducing anxiety and lowering pulse rates in nursing students taking stressful tests. And in hospital settings, lavender aromatherapy has been demonstrated to decrease pre-surgery distress and to be more relaxing than massage or merely resting.(1) Lavender essential oil has medicinal properties as well. It has been shown to reduce depression, improve insomnia and ease labor pains. And anecdotal evidence suggests that lavender oil benefits those with headaches, hangovers, sinus congestion and pain relief.
DIY Lavender Lemonade with Lavender Essential Oil Ingredients 1 cup raw honey 12 cups pure water 1 drop lavender essential oil 6 lemons, peeled and juiced Lavender sprigs for garnish Directions Mix all ingredients together and chill. Dealing with irritating family members this festive season…
“Certain people irritate me, because they remind me of how I treat myself.”
By Hanna Kok Isn’t it amazing how some people just know which buttons to push, and these people are often our family members. With the holiday season around the corner, we probably have to spend some time these button pushers. How can we ensure that we don’t explode? If we want to enjoy our family time, it is vital that we learn to look at our situation from a different perspective. If we start looking at these irritating people as our reflection, we can do something about it. If we don’t like our reflection in the mirror, then all we have to do is change ourselves and our reflection will change automatically too.
When I point fingers at the other person and their irritating behaviour, three fingers are pointing back at me. Certain people irritate me, because they remind me of how I treat myself (90% of the time) or others (10%). By changing this behaviour within myself, my reflection changes and my irritation levels with drop (drastically).
Three Fingers Pointing Back Outcomes.
To get these results, we need to ask ourselves a couple of questions.
When we follow all the steps of the Three Finger Pointing Back, I guarantee at least one of the following outcomes: • The irritating people disappear gracefully out of my life, without having to shoot them • They change, • They don’t irritate me anymore or • I become effective in dealing with them If you want these outcomes it will be required that you eat some humble pie. Our ego doesn’t like that, especially if we are irritated. The extra bonus of applying these Three Fingers Pointing Back, is that the outcome will reveal to us what our next step is in reaching your goals. I like to work with the principle that every person who comes into my life is Divinely sent. They have a message for me. Irritating people show me my sabotaging habits and how I can change them
Question 1: What makes this person so irritating to me? • • • •
Do I feel this person(s): Is disrespectful of me Doesn’t listen to me Disrespects my boundaries
Question 2: How are they my mirror? It is time to eat humble pie. The main reason we experience them as irritating is because they are our mirror. “I don’t do that to them!” you might think? You are probably right. The painful truth is that most of the time they mirror us on how we treat ourselves. This is when we start to analyse: How disrespectful am I of myself? How often have I not listened to my intuition? How often do ignore our own boundaries or break the promises I made to myself?
Here are some examples: When we’ve made a mistake, we call ourselves stupid (or other things) (We are disrespectful of ourselves) We know it is in our best interest to stay at home and study, but we go out instead (We are not listening to our intuition.) We tell ourselves we are going to exercise more, but we don’t. We tell ourselves we are going to eat differently, but we don’t (We ignore our own boundaries / we break the promises we made to ourselves)
Question 3 - How can we change ourselves? For many of us it is easier to give others advice than ourselves. That is why I suggest we pretend to give the other person advice on how to change their irritating behaviour. Then the advice we follow ourselves. After answering question 1, 2 and 3 and especially after following our own advice, we hardly ever have to speak to the other person about their irritation behaviour. How will I reach my goals easier? You now have identified the irritating behaviour in yourself. How will getting rid of this habit in yourself help you to reach your goals? I am sure that it will make a big difference in your life when you follow your own advice and change yourself first. When should I apply The Three Fingers Pointing Back? Every time someone irritates me, I need to apply the Three Fingers Pointing Back. However it is not always easy to do it in the moment. Our ego, cannot swallow that. So I suggest that once we have cooled down and we are in a quiet place, it is time to analyse the situation. The stronger the irritation we feel with the other person, the more we are doing the same, most likely to ourselves.
In Conclusion When we answer all the three questions and follow our own advice, our feelings towards the irritating people or situation changes by themselves, or the situation changes, or we know now how to handle it with a more humble attitude, because we now realise we are similar to the other (irritating) person. Enjoy the Festive Season and that you may enjoy the people you spend this special time with. I will be with you again in the New Year. The biggest danger facing our cats, nowadays, is renal failure By Paul Jacobson from Vondis BLADDER DISORDERS, KIDNEY STONES, RENAL FAILURE, ARTHRITIS, SKIN ALLERGIES, OBESITY, DIABETES, CANCER – ARE JUST SOME OF THE POSSIBLE AILMENTS THAT WILL ARISE FROM FEEDING YOUR CATS INFERIOR, HIGH CARB, KIBBLE DIETS ”Nutrition is serious In my opinion the biggest danger facing our cats, health business. The nowadays, is renal failure. In the past, cats lived to a public is not well served ripe old age and died of a heart failure at 15 – 18 years. by exclusively feeding Now, cats are lucky if they make it until 10 years old. products from companies without any Cats are obligate carnivores and they retain and metabolize their liquid intake from their nutrition. Dry real commitment to kibble food has the exact opposite affect and rather health… or knowledge than hydrating our dear furry friends, actually of how to even achieve dehydrates them. Have you ever noticed what happens to kibble when dropped into water? The kibble absorbs that. Recent studies have all the water and puffs up double its size. That is what is shown processed foods happening to the insides of our cats (and dogs). to be a factor in increasing numbers of Cats have been observed, drinking water from the pets suffering from shower and toilet and certainly spend more time at cancer, arthritis, obesity, their water bowl than they should. The strange thing is, that if fed a wholesome real food diet, cats will seldom dental disease and heart be seen drinking. The high moisture levels in real food, disease”. Those looking for a more scientific explanation as to renal failure in cats, with respect to feeding kibble diets, can refer to this: Acidification of the diet can destroy acid-sensitive micronutrients like vitamin K, biotin and B12. Acidification has been done for several years by pet food manufacturers to help control struvite crystal formation in the urine that becomes too alkaline when dogs and cats are fed high cereal diets. This can lead to the development of calculi/stones in the urinary tract that cause painful and even fatal urinary blockage. Such artificial alteration of the acidity/alkalinity of the animals’ food can cause metabolic acidosis and kidney failure. These are common emergencies, along with urinary retention, in veterinary practice. Acidification of pet foods also resulted in an increased incidence of calcium oxalate uroliths/stones.
THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE – HOW TO WEAN YOUR CATS OVER Cat owners will confirm how different they are in terms of behaviour and diet and how challenging it is to change their dietary needs. With dogs, if they are presented with food that they don’t like, they may resist for a few days but they will eventually accept their new feed. But with cats, they may refuse until their bitter end.
“The sad truth is that prepared pet foods help provide patients for vets.” Dr. Ian Billinghurst, B.V.Sc.(Hons), BSc.Agr., Dip.Ed.
That said, cats can change their diets and they can be weaned over relatively easily. All that is required is patience, perseverance and “tricks of the trade”. Here some suggested inclusions into your wholesome cat’s diet in order to enhance taste and desirability until the transition has taken place completely. This may take a week or weeks:
*Sardines * Tuna * chicken liver * Omega 3 fish oil * butter biltong * chicken broth and pieces * natural gravies

VONDI’S YUMMY CAT FOOD is a high moisture meat protein diet and contains chicken, mutton, healthy grains, eggs, cold pressed olive oil, veggies, freshly picked herbs, vitamin supplement and taurine. Any cat food based on this recipe would be perfect for your cats. Changing your cats from kibble to wholesome food, as mentioned may take a bit of time. You can a portion your new cat and add to it your current kibble (although not desirable) as well as the tasties I had suggested. Over time you will add less on the kibble and more of the wholesome diet until he/she is weaned over completely

“The results of a clinical trial suggest that 74.7% of common diseases in dogs and 63% of common diseases in cats can be eliminated without medical intervention over a period of one year with proper diet modifications and an understanding of the healing process as exhibited through healing episodes. Approaching disease from the perspective of health is the most powerful means of eliminating disease. Poor fuel makes for little momentum in life. The commercial food we are feeding’ is the disease we are treating – so treat on and on, curing one disease after another, again and again.”Dr. William Pollak, DVM
13 Tips for What to Do When Your Cat Goes Missing
Keep this list handy. If your cat ever disappears from your home, it can be a life-saver Have you ever had your cat go missing from your house? If so, you know how terrified and helpless this can make you feel. You don’t know if they’re simply hiding outside in the yard, gone exploring, or if they’ve encountered a predator. Often, the first reaction is to go searching for your cat with no real plan of action. We walk around the neighborhood (or drive) continually calling out our furry friend’s name. We find ourselves spending many hours searching areas and using methods that may not reunite them with us. For some, we simply choose to wait a couple of days to see if our cat returns home. This is perhaps the worst thing we can do. The longer a cat is gone, the further it could stray and the more danger the cat can encounter.
1. Make a sign
2. Where to post it
Create a laminated “lost pet” sign that contains the word “REWARD” at the top, a recent color photo of the animal in the center of the sign, and the phone number to contact if the animal is seen or found by someone. It’s very important not to list any other details. Use a large enough sign that it can be seen by drivers in their cars. Laminating the sign will protect it from adverse weather conditions.
Post the sign around the neighborhood, at local veterinarian’s offices, at the county animal control shelter, and at local animal rescue shelters.
3. Don’t forget restaurants If you live in a major city with a lot of restaurants nearby, provide each restaurant with the “lost pet” sign or flier. After all, your cat will find food wherever it is convenient.
4. Contact your microchip company If your cat is micro-chipped, contact the company to ensure that they have your current information on file in case someone contacts them about finding your cat.
5. Visit shelters Visit the local county animal control shelter and local animal rescue shelters daily to see if your cat is there. The shelters have so many volunteers, employees, and staff on hand, on any given day, that unless you talk to each of them they may not know that you are looking for your missing cat. Also, if you search animal shelter websites for your missing cat, don’t narrow your search by a specific breed. Sometimes, if the person entering the information on the shelter’s website isn’t sure of the cat’s breed, they may list it incorrectly.
6. Target newspapers and websites Place a “lost pet” ad in your local newspaper, community notice boards and your local Vets. Include the same information that you have on the “lost pet” sign. Also, post it on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, if you have them. If not, perhaps a friend in the area does.
7. Check “found pet” ads Check “found pet” ads in the local newspaper, on local rescue shelter web sites, etc. Again (as stated in No. 5 above), don’t limit your search to a particular breed.
8. Hit the streets Canvass a three-block radius around your neighborhood from your home. It is important to knock on doors and talk to your neighbors so they are aware that your cat is missing. If they aren’t home, leave a flier. Unless you see your cat during your search, please do not call for them while you are searching your neighborhood. The reason for this is if they do happen to hear you, you would be gone by the time they get to where you were when you called for them. Instead, either call for them from the front yard or backyard of your home or, if you do look for them by car, look silently. Be sure to look up in the trees. The missing cat may have been chased up into a tree and is fearful to come down.
12. Don’t forget commuters and delivery drivers Provide a “lost pet” flier to drivers with regular routes in the area and ask them to contact you if they see your missing cat. This includes mail carriers, trash collectors, school bus drivers, and delivery truck drivers.
13. Stay positive
9. Set a humane trap Set a humane cat trap in a safe area near the exterior of your home (e.g. front porch, deck, back porch) and cover the back and sides with a towel or blanket that has your scent or your cat’s scent on it. Check on the trap frequently throughout the night, but do it discretely, so as not to scare your cat away. Put a bowl of fresh soft cat food, tuna, or sardines and water in the enclosure to lure the cat in.
10. Contact homeowners’ associations If you live in a neighborhood that has a homeowner’s association, contact one of the board members and ask them to post your cat’s information on the neighborhood website and to send out an email to everyone in the neighborhood asking that you be called if someone sees your cat.
11. Keep going! Actively keep searching for your lost cat no matter how much time has elapsed. Lost animals can turn up weeks, and sometimes months or years after they’ve been lost.
Maintain a positive attitude about the outcome of your search. Cats are very resourceful when it comes to finding food, water, and shelter. While it’s human nature to assume the worst has happened, don’t. Negative energy can block positive results.
