DR MARIA MONTESSORI "I have studied the child. I have taken what the child has given me and expressed it and that is what is called the Montessori Method." "Education should no longer be mostly imparting of knowledge, but must take a new path, seeking the release of human potentialities." Dr. Maria Montessori Dr. Maria Montessori, physician, anthropologist and pedagogue, studied children of all racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds for over fifty years. Her intense scientific observation of the human being from birth to maturity allowed her to distill a body of philosophical, psychological and pedagogical principles. These, together with a vast range of auto-didactic materials, came to be known as the Montessori Method of Education. Montessori pedagogy is a comprehensive and continuous response to the vital exigencies of the total human being, adapted to each stage of development. THE MONTESSORI APPROACH The Montessori approach offers a broad vision of education as an aid to life. It is designed to help children with their task of inner construction as they grow from childhood to maturity. It succeeds because it draws its principles from the natural development of the child. Its flexibility provides a matrix within which each individual child's inner directives freely guide the child toward wholesome growth. Montessori classrooms provide a prepared environment where children are free to respond to their natural tendency to work. The children's innate passion for learning is encouraged by giving them opportunities to engage in spontaneous, purposeful activities with the guidance of a trained adult. Through their work, the children develop concentration and joyful self-discipline. Within a framework of order, the children progress at their own pace and rhythm, according to their individual capabilities. The transformation of children from birth to adulthood occurs through a series of developmental planes. Montessori practice changes in scope and manner to embrace the child's changing characteristics and interests. The first plane of development occurs from birth to age six. At this stage, children are sensorial explorers, constructing their intellects by absorbing every aspect of their environment, their language and their culture. From age 6 to 12, children become conceptual explorers. They develop their powers of abstraction and imagination, and apply their knowledge to discover and expand their worlds further. The years between 12 and 18 see the children become humanistic explorers, seeking to understand their place in society and their opportunity to contribute to it. From 18 to 24, as young adults, they become specialised explorers, seeking a niche from which to contribute to universal dialogue.

Infancy (2 months to 3 years) The first three years of life are the most fundamental in the development of human beings and their potential. The infant's physical development is phenomenal and apparent and inspires our care and attention. Yet a profound and less obvious development is taking place within the child. Montessori refers to the child at this period as the spiritual embryo. A second embryonic period occurs after birth during the first three years of life when the child's intelligence is formed, when the child acquires the culture and language into which he or she is born. It is a period when the core of personality, social being and the essence of spiritual life are developed. An understanding of the child's development and the development of the human mind allows environments to be prepared to meet the needs of the infant and foster independence, psychomotor development and language acquisition. Casa dei Bambini (3 to 6 years) Children of this age possess what Dr. Montessori called the Absorbent Mind. This type of mind has the unique and transitory ability to absorb all aspects physical, mental, spiritual of the environment, without effort or fatigue. As an aid to the child's self-construction, individual work is encouraged. The following areas of activity cultivate the children's ability to express themselves and think with clarity. Elementary (6 to 12 years) Elementary children, typically, can be characterised by their questioning minds, their ability to abstract and imagine, their moral and social orientation and their unlimited energy for research and exploration. They move from the concrete through their own efforts and discovery to the abstract - thus greatly expanding their field of knowledge. In a research style of learning, elementary children work in small groups on a variety of projects which spark the imagination and engage the intellect. Lessons given by a trained Montessori teacher direct the children toward activities which help them to develop reasoning abilities and learn the arts of life. Adolescence (12 to 18 years) The Montessori program for children aged 12 to 18 years is based on the recognition of the special characteristics of adolescence. Adolescence is an age of great social development, an age of critical thinking and re-evaluation, and a period of self-concern and selfassessment. It is a transition from childhood to adulthood with the corresponding physical, mental and sexual maturation. In early puberty the adolescent finds it hard to concentrate on academic and structured learning. Above all adolescence is like an odyssey - an arduous yet exciting adventure - where the adolescent tries to find his or her place in the world. http://www.montessori-ami.org/montessori/montessori.htm

THE MONTESSORI MOVEMENT Montessori pedagogical principles are rooted in a social movement that champions the cause of all children, in all strata of society, of all races and ethnic backgrounds, within and beyond educational institutions. The Montessori movement began on 6 January 1907 when Maria Montessori opened the first Casa dei Bambini in San Lorenzo in Rome. What followed has been called the "discovery of the child" and the realisation that: "...mankind can hope for a solution to its problems, among which the most urgent are those of peace and unity, only by turning its attention and energies to the discovery of the child and to the development of the great potentialities of the human personality in the course of its formation." Montessori is one of the most widely implemented educational approaches in the world with over 22,000 schools in 117 countries. The Montessori movement, however, is far broader and works to assist children and their families in a variety of settings. Montessorians serve as advocates for all children---championing the rights of the child in society. http://www.montessori-ami.org/montessori/movement.htm

Our Vision What if we were to set aside the noise of failing schools, teacher evaluations, test scores, achievement gaps, and funding issues — and ask, instead, what is the true goal of education? Building the Pink Tower looks at education differently. Through the lens of Montessori education — now more than 100 years old — we see how families and educators have embraced schools as a place for creative learning, problem solving, collaboration, and community building. We follow children as they discover their love of learning through exploration of beautiful, carefully prepared classroom environments. We come to see that the essence of the Montessori approach is nothing new, but rather takes us back to our simple shared desire to understand the world around us. We enter the lives of children as they experience Montessori education in classrooms ranging from pre-school through high school. From the backyard of an urban housing project, to a farm in Wisconsin, to an innovative charter high school, we come to understand what works in education and what families want for their children, regardless of race, culture, or income. And, we see how essential children are in building their own powerful learning experiences.

Building the Pink Tower, which is currently in production, is a feature-length documentary film that opens our eyes to what Montessori education means today. With the help of educators, neuroscientists, families, and children, it answers our most challenging questions about what children need.

Most of all, Building the Pink Tower will allow us to see how the building blocks of rigorous teacher training, carefully prepared environments, deep respect of children, and warm and inclusive communities, fit together to support children in our changing world. From this solid base, we can work to build education that inspires children and prepares them for life.

Please Share your Montessori Story As we have been sharing our idea for the Building the Pink Tower documentary project with others, we keep hearing of incredible Montessori stories. People everywhere - students, teachers, parents - have a story of how Montessori has changed how they think about learning, how they act as parents, how they interact with the world. Many of us have experienced something in the Montessori world that we want to share with others. Read more on our blog: http://buildingthepinktower.org/blog/what-your-montessori-story

5 Ways to Teach Kids to Apologize

_______________________________

How many times have your kids given the obligatory “I’m sorry” when we know good and well they didn’t really mean it? You know the drill…the child does something unsavoury to a sibling or friend and mom or dad mandate that an apology be issued RIGHT NOW! The child grudgingly complies with a half-hearted “I’m sorry” so he can “check it off the list” and get on with his business. Forcing kids to apologize in the heat of the moment usually makes parents feel better but does little to help children understand the effects of their behaviour on others or how to resolve conflicts in the future. Instead, wait until everyone is calm and follow these five guidelines to teach kids how to take responsibility for their actions, develop empathy for others and learn from their mistakes: 1. Don’t “shame” or punish your child. This only makes her feel bad about herself and doesn’t help her learn for the future. Instead, be very clear that the behaviour was not okay but now she has an opportunity to learn from the experience and “make it right” with the other person. 2. Avoid the temptation to lecture. Instead, use questions to help your child process what she was feeling when the infraction occurred. For example, “What/how were you feeling before you hit Jenny?” This teaches her to take responsibility for her feelings. If the child is too young to identify the feeling, you can help “label” it by saying, “It looked like you were really angry.” We want to reinforce that feelings are okay, however, the action that followed was not.

3. Connect the dots. Tie your child’s feeling to her action and the effect it had on the other person. “When you felt angry and hit Jenny, how do you think that made her feel?” This teaches that her actions have an impact on other people. 4. Make amends. Focus on solutions to “make it right” with the injured party by asking, “What can you do to make it right with Jenny?” That may be a verbal apology if it’s truly heart-felt, but children typically learn more by taking some action to make the other person feel better – perhaps writing a note, drawing a picture, or showing some other act of kindness. 5. Role-play the “re-do.” Don’t miss the opportunity to help your child learn to make a better choice next time. Ask, “If you could have a re-do, what would you do differently when you were angry at Jenny?” Brainstorm more constructive ways to handle the situation next time and role-play them. She’ll be more likely to use positive conflict resolution tactics next time if she’s had the chance to practice them with you. Developing empathy and learning helpful conflict resolution strategies takes time and using these five guidelines will jump-start the learning by reinforcing that:

• • •

we all make mistakes and that’s how we learn to do better in the future feelings are okay although some actions are not taking responsibility for your actions and making it right with the other person is an important part of being a friend or part of a family.

Parenting - A Challenging Style of Yoga By Tamar Dakes Botha from Beaming Kids _____________________________________________________________________ Parenting is one of the most challenging forms of yoga; • • • •

We are required to be healthy and strong, both in body, mind and temperament. We are expected to be loving and kind and to practice no harm. We have to be honest and moderate, calm and balanced, grounded and informed. We must lead by example, keep our families well nourished, and our bodies and homes clean. • We need to manage time well and take time out. • We need to stay connected to source so we show our kids that everything they need is inside of them. • We want our kids to know that they have all the power they need to live happy healthy lives and that together we can all make the world a better place. • The greatest gift we can give our children is our own personal joy. Running around, schlepping and trying to fit in every extra mural may feel right for now, but what about just being? What about hanging outside, playing, watching clouds, climbing trees. What about trying to do nothing? Have we forgotten how to be human beings and turned into human doings; human doings who feel we are just not doing enough? Our children live in a hurry up world of busy parents, peer pressure, incessant lessons, competitive sports, TV, game consoles and shopping malls. We live in a hurry up world of challenging kids, work pressure, financial stress, time challenges, safety concerns, and traffic and so on. These stressors have a profound impact on our own innate joy and that of our kids. They reduce our ability to maintain a focused and positive outlook on life. The regular practice of yoga helps counter these stressors and gives us tools to cope better. I love this Chinese proverb "If you don't go within, you go without". Practicing yoga helps us to go within.

PARENT CHILD YOGA Yoga classes for kids and parents are an amazing way to share all the benefits of yoga with your child. While playing, stretching and strengthening your body, mind and spirit you release all expectations of your child by guiding them through your own yoga. By being the best you that you can be and sharing your joy with your child you are practicing yoga. By teaching your children to speak the truth, practice nonviolence, non-stealing and non-wasting - you are teaching your children yoga. By teaching your children to respect others, to be pure in thoughts and actions, to maintain a healthy body and to strive to be the best they can be - you are teaching your children yoga. Yoga classes will help your children move deeper into their practice by teaching them how to; look within, develop a strong body and mind, breathe effectively and to meditate. CHILDRENS YOGA Children's yoga uses stories, games, music, dance and singing to create a playful connection to the inner self and the natural world. Classes are fun, interactive, diverse and current. Kids learn how to control their thoughts, feelings and behaviour so to encourage harmonious personal relationships with others. Yoga provides a loving, responsive, creative environment for children to uncover their own truths. With the knowledge of personal power, self-health, relaxation and inner fulfillment; children have a greater chance at becoming productive, creative, disciplined and kinder members of society. Yoga is a one of the only non competitive forms of physical activity that builds a child's self esteem and fosters cooperation and compassion. Yoga is a magical journey of connectedness towards a healthier, happier, more peaceful state of being - Yoga with Kids makes the journey more fun! If you would like more information about classes, venues, prices, products and courses visit www.beamingkids.co.za

YOU HAVE THE CHOICE – MAKE IT ORGANIC By Lilia Simeonova Owner of Organic Choice From the day we become parents our lives change and our world shifts. Keeping our children happy and healthy becomes priority and affects all the decisions we make. But do we know enough in order to make the right decisions? The child’s life and health begins within the mothers’ body. We as future moms have 9 months to prepare for the biggest change in our lives. We take supplements, we don’t smoke or drink alcohol and we hope and expect to have healthy normal babies. We even do tests to be sure our babies are fine. So why are some babies born with allergies, autism, asthma, deformities and rare diseases? According to the data published by EWG (Environmental Working Group - www.ewg.org ), babies are born pre-polluted with over 200 chemicals in their little bodies. Where do these chemicals come from and what is their effect on baby’s health? It is obvious the chemicals in babies are coming from us, their loving mothers. What we eat, drink and breathe, what we apply on our skin and hair affects our bodies and automatically affects our unborn babies. Most of us don’t realize that about 60% of what we apply to our skin is absorbed. The cosmetic products we use every day contain hundreds of synthetic ingredients, some known to be hazardous to health. In reality when we apply moisturiser on the face, or lipstick or foundation, or even hair dyes on hair – there are chemicals present in those products which will enter our blood stream, some of which the body will get rid of, but some will stay and trigger reactions . Fact is nobody really knows what the long term exposure to thousands of chemicals will be. We can no longer afford to be ignorant and blindly trust manufacturers, institutions and big corporations. Our heath and the health of our children are in our hands, if only we are willing to take responsibility. There is always a choice. So where do we start? •We have to start with the products we use daily for ourselves. Does processed and ‘fast’ food play a major part in our diets? Do we drink carbonated or vitamin enriched drinks? Do we buy beauty products without looking at their ingredients list? There are ingredient like MSG (found in many foods), Parabens (cosmetics, medicines), Propylene Glycol (food, cosmetics), PPD and Ammonia (hair dyes), SLS (cleaning products like soaps, toothpaste, bath oils, dishwashing liquid), Mineral Oil (cosmetics, some foods), Phalates (hair products, toys, nail polish) and many more that we have to avoid. All these additives are known to be hazardous to health, but the regulating bodies around the world consider them safe because of their ‘small’ concentration. •Next step is to choose carefully the products we buy for our babies. Milk formulas, baby foods and drinks, toys and diapers. Most milk formulas are made from processed milk from cows that are treated regularly with growth hormones and antibiotics. Toys are made from plastics that are not assessed for safety. Disposable Nappies are made with Polyacrylic Acid (super absorbent polymer, banned in 1985 for use in tampons), TBT (linked to damages to immune and hormonal system) and Dioxin (a by-product of bleaching, known carcinogen) and they are tremendous problem for environment.

There are alternatives like Holle organic baby formulas and porridges, Natursutter rubber pacifiers, Mother Nature cloth nappies, Bamboo Eco Disposables and Pure Beginnings natural wet wipes. Most of these products may be found in health shops and a few online stores dedicated to selling only natural and organic products. •Another important decision concerning our babies is vaccination. For the last 2 years there has been a very heated debate in USA and Europe regarding safety of modern vaccines. Natural News (www.naturalnews.com) keeps spreading information about what the vaccines contain and why there are so many side effects and even deaths due to vaccination. We all have to know the scary fact that baby’s vaccines contain Mercury, Formaldehyde, MSG and other hazardous components with known side effects. The question that bothers us is why hare these ‘nasty’s’ are added to vaccines? (http://www.healthychild.com/toxicity-of-vaccinations) How do we choose whether or not to vaccinate our children when vaccines are supposed to prevent serious diseases, but at the same time may cause Autism, asthma, ADHD and allergies? It is a decision every parent has to make, and it is not an easy one. •When our children are young it is easy to control what they eat, drink and play with. When they start primary school things get more difficult with school tuck shops selling lots of junk food and teachers giving lolly pops as rewards. It is tough to teach children to avoid junk food and not drink fizzy drinks when major drive-thru franchises have advertisements everywhere and birthday parties consist of chips, sweets, hotdogs and cool drinks. The only sensible thing for us to do is to set our own example – eat healthy at home, prepare wholesome lunch boxes, teach kids how to prepare their own food, and even how to grow it. Make them see movies about benefits of healthy food and read them articles about the effects of junk food on their health. What we can also do is to buy free range milk or milk guaranteed to be free of growth hormones, pure butter instead of margarine, prepare at home-made iced tea, use glass and stainless steel bottles instead or plastic ones, don’t buy clothing treated with chemicals so no ironing is required, and always wash brand new clothes before wearing them. Don’t allow your children to try your lipsticks and nail polishes, unless you are using natural brands made without harsh chemicals. There are many alternatives, if one knows what to look for and where. Many local companies offer wonderful natural products, e.g. The Victorian Garden (cosmetics), Esse (cosmetics), Better Earth (cleaning products), Earth Sap (cleaning and cosmetics), Pure Beginnings (baby products), Mother Nature (cloth nappies), Oko Africa (pacifiers), Earth Products (organic foods) and many more. Soaring Free Superfoods offer packs full of nutrients. Their Chia Meal is excellent breakfast for the whole family when mixed with plain yogurt. For us and our teenagers there are brands like Jane Iredale for safe, mineral makeup and Logona for 100% natural hair colouring. ALL OF THESE PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE FROM ORGANIC CHOICE. www.OrganicChoice.co.za. With so many choices we need to stay informed. There is plenty of information available regarding the natural option and alternative brands on www.naturalnews.com and www.ewg.org. Facebook offers pages like ‘Not just another nutritional site’ and ‘What is really in your cosmetics’. Should you have any queries please feel free to contact me on info@organicchoice.co.za.

If you have the time and commitment to be part of an organization that support bereaved parents, we need you! There is no monetary reward for your time and efforts; the reward is to make a difference, even in the smallest way. We will be forever grateful to the outgoing committee members for their dedication and hard work. You made a huge difference! Thank You! Salt 4 Life Get healthy with a smile

Laughter is the best medicine... ... to overcome challenges in our lives. We received laughter as a gift at birth. But why is it that we lose all this fun and levity? Daily demands and pressure add up and can become very stressful for adults: meeting family demands, getting children to Kindergarten, school and extra murals; workplace stress, being a single parent; for children: bullying at school, pressure from parents and teachers for academic achievements, social anxiety just to name a few. Therefore, stress related illnesses like depression, fatigue and burn out, back- and headache neck pain, high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and heart problems are some of the challenges in our daily lives. Stress will raise the level of the hormone cortisol in the body. In other words, the body will be in FIGHT or FLIGHT mode. Nowadays we are under stress constantly. The body does not get the opportunity to relax and recharge. This very harmful and can result in serious illnesses stated above. Stress can be eliminated by laughter. When laughing, the body produces hormones like serotonin and endorphins. These chemicals will reduce the stress hormones in the body immediately. When laughter is shared, it connects people and increases happiness, builds self confidence and improves communication and social connection. How can laughter help children? Well, today we find there is a desperate need for laughter and play in children of all ages. Laughter helps children cope with stress and replace some of the laughter and playfulness that is missing due to the formalized education system and change in lifestyles. Laughter is an economical addition to schools or any other educational institution. It will help children to concentrate better, will prepare and calm them before exams and tests, will improve the social connection with their peers and others. The sound of roaring laughter is more contagious than any disease. Hearty laughter creates a good cardiac workout, can improve your physical health, releases negative thoughts and emotions and assists with the healing process. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts your energy, reduces pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, it is always available. Laughter 4 Life offers regular monthly laughter workshops or on demand for: de-stress, teambuilding, cross cultural teambuilding, conferences, the handicapped, meetings, seminars, schools, senior citizens. The next laughter workshop takes place on Thursday, 21 February 2013, 11 am, at Leafy Greens Cafe, Rocky Ridge Road, Muldersdrift. 10 TIPS FOR BETTER SLEEP

1. Have a routine – as far as possible go to bed at the same time every day so your body has a reliable pattern to adapt to.

7. Make sure your bedroom is as dark and quiet as possible, use ear plugs or sleeping masks if you’re bothered by lights or sounds that can’t be avoided.

2. Minimize stressful or high pressure activities for the last 1 ½ hour before you go to bed.

8. Don’t drink coffee, tea (caffeine will keep you awake) or large amounts of any liquid (needing the bathroom will wake you up) for the last 2 hours before bed.

3. Turn the lights down for the past hour before you go to bed – melatonin which aids sleep is produced by the body in response to darkness and is disrupted by bright lights such as computer or television screens. 4. Move around and make sure you spend some time outdoors during the day, but avoid exercise right before bedtime. If you want to do some gentle stretching before going to bed that’s okay, but absolutely no cardio. 5. Engage in relaxing activities, such as light reading, listening to quiet music or the radio for the last hour of the day to ease your brain and body into relaxation mode. 6. If you find yourself consumed by worries when you’re in bed, either write a list that you can return to in the morning, or firmly tell yourself that if it was that urgent, you would have seen to it earlier.

9. Try not to eat dinner too late – have a small snack if you get hungry late at night, but avoid foods high in fibre or protein as your stomach will have to make an effort to break down the food and might keep you awake. 10. Don’t fret – if you’re looking at the clock every 5 minutes you’re probably keeping yourself awake by worrying about not sleeping. Resolve to lie still, breathe slowly and relax your mind. Even if you don’t fall asleep as soon as you’d like to, you’re giving your body the opportunity to rest. Try to use these tips for the next 2-3 weeks, and make note of what works and what doesn't. It can take a while to get into a good sleeping rhythm, so don't despair if it doesn't work right away. Some people find using scents like camomile or lavender helps them sleep. Good night!

Soothing Beads Bracelet Made by Mary Kay specifically for Linda Navon Today I had the pleasure of receiving my ‘made-to-my-needs’ Soothing Beads Bracelet which is now snugly wrapped around my left wrist..... Perfect, it’s beautiful and made just for me, to address my personal physical, mental and spiritual issues. While I am not about to go into any detail on my specific ‘life traumas’, what I will share with you are some of the healing properties of a few of the gemstones in this magnificent creation.

For easy identification I have started at the clasp end: JET – Black - is also known as black amber, although it is not actually an amber, but rather fossilized coal. It was used extensively in mourning jewellery in Victorian times and was considered a stone for alleviating and bringing grief to the surface to be healed. It has also historically been used as a protection stone and is said to have very powerful protection energies to ward off evil, negativity, and psychic attacks. It is also said to protect finances and protect from depression, and increase self-reliance. Mystically, jet is considered a stone of sympathy, healing grief, psychic experiences. It is said by intuitive sources to be an excellent calming stone, and helpful for treating epilepsy, migraines, stomach pain, colds, glandular problems, and lymphatic problems. BRECCIATED JASPER – Brick red - has the qualities of enhancing organizational abilities, relaxation, and a sense of wholeness. It is occasionally used to assist when dowsing. It aligns the chakras and balances the yin-yang, physical, and emotional. It is a stone of protection, and is used in particular for protection during astral travel. Brecciated jasper encourages attunement and communication with animals and can help with animal allergies, plus other allergies. It brings happiness and a good outlook on life and eases stress. It is also said to bring energies for success in work. Brecciated jasper can help increase physical endurance and ward off dehydration. Assists with stomach ailments. It is also a good stone for grounding oneself. Red Brecciated Jasper is often called Poppy Jasper MALACHITE – Green - is a stone of transformation and helps with change and spiritual evolution. It can clear and activate all chakras, as well as balance them. Malachite is a stone that bridges the energy of the heart and root chakras. It is particularly useful for balancing and clearing the heart chakra. As such, it helps balance pure love,

romance, and one's own well-being. Malachite is a stone of good fortune and prosperity/abundance, too. Malachite is also a very protective stone, being especially helpful for general protection, protection from evil, and protection for children. It is also an excellent protection stone during flying and other travel. Using this stone, one can counteract self-destructive romantic tendencies and help encourage true, pure love. Malachite is also good for enhancing emotional stability and balance in general. ROSE QUARTZ is pink quartz that is often called the "Love Stone." It is a stone of unconditional love that opens the heart chakra to all forms of love: self-love, family love, platonic love, and romantic love. The high energy of quartz gives rose quartz the property of enhancing love in virtually any situation. In turn, this lowers stress. All in all it is a very soothing and happy stone. Emotionally rose quartz brings gentleness, forgiveness, compassion, kindness and tolerance. It raises one's self-esteem and sense of self-worth. It helps balance emotions and heals emotional wounds and traumas, even grief, bringing peace and calm. Rose quartz removes fears, resentments and anger. It can also heal and release childhood traumas, neglect, and lack of love, in part by enhancing inner awareness. It can help with reconciliation with family and others. Overwhelming or unreasonable guilt is eased by rose quartz. In the psychic and spiritual realms, rose quartz is often used to attract love, and for love spells. It is also used to ease the process of transition in dying. Rose quartz can be helpful for dream recall and dream work. Physically rose quartz is used in crystal healing to benefit the heart, the circulatory system, fertility, headaches, kidney disease, migraines, sexual dysfunction, sinus problems, throat problems, depression, addictions, ear aches, slowing signs of aging, reducing wrinkles, spleen problems, fibromyalgia, and reaching one's ideal weight / weight loss. It is also sometimes said that rose quartz is helpful for supporting brain functions and increasing intellect. MOONSTONE – white flashes - is said in crystal healing to help calm responses and avoids overreaction; enhances feminine energies, sensitivity, intuition, and psychic abilities. It is also said to bring strong energies of abundance to one's life. Moonstone is a stone of protection. It is a stone of calm and relief from emotional stress. It is also associated with love of all kinds. Physically it aids the pituitary gland and digestive system, obesity, water retention, hormonal problems, menstrual problems. This gemstone teaches Cancers that one makes progress only by striving for the highest ideals. It forces them to stop daydreaming and face reality. BLUE PERUVIAN (ANDEAN) OPAL – blue/ yellow - is mystically known as a stone of courage and ingenuity. It is said to improve self-esteem and self-love. It is also said to be an aid to creativity and communication of all types. It is reputed to help one find a confidant. Peruvian blue opal is also said to help with stress reduction, fatigue, and weight loss. Crystal healing lore reputes that Peruvian (Andean) blue opal is physically healing for fatigue, chronic fatigue syndrome, metabolic balance issues, iron absorption, dizziness, and brain disorders. APACHE TEAR – Pink Square - The Legend of the Apache Tear is this: One day a party of Apache Indians was ambushed by an enemy tribe. The Apaches fought bravely but were greatly outnumbered and driven to the top of a high bluff. Their arrows gone and unable to fight and unwilling to be taken captive, they leapt from the cliffs to their death. Their women were understandably grief-stricken and wept over the bodies. Their teardrops froze when they hit the ground to become the lovely stones we know today as Apache Tears. It is said that whoever owns one of these stones will never cry again, for the Apache women shed enough tears already. Apache Tears are said to especially relieve grief and sadness as well as assisting in giving and accepting forgiveness. They can help release negative emotions, and they also can balance one's emotional state. They are good luck stones, said to bring good luck to anyone who has one. They are excellent meditation tools, especially for clarifying issues and gaining insight. Apache Tears are a gently grounding stone. In the physical realm, Apache Tears are reputed to alleviate muscle spasms and eliminate toxins from the body. QUARTZ – clear - is a Master Healer stone. It is an excellent all-purpose crystal healer stone. It is said to amplify healing energy and is used to perform diagnostic healing. It has been used historically to detect food poison. It is said to draw out pain. Quartz is used in crystal healing to fortify and strengthen all systems of the body. Quartz is reputed to be particularly effective for chronic fatigue, arthritis, bone injuries, depression, diabetes, fibromyalgia and intestinal troubles. It also is said to improve mental and physical energy, stamina, and physical strength.

Building a future in which humans live in harmony with nature

Rhino Conservation WWF is one of the world's largest and most respected independent conservation organisations, with almost 5 million supporters and a global network active in over 100 countries. More than 75% of all the world's rhino today are found in South Africa. WWF urges all South Africans to be proud of our rhinos - our natural heritage. Rhinos have ranged far and wide across Africa and formed a magnificent part of our cultural and natural heritage for thousands of years. Long before becoming part of the iconic Big Five, rhinos were revered by African royalty as epitomised by the Golden Rhino buried with the King of Mapungubwe 800 years ago. South Africans are rightly proud of their rhino history and the critical role they played in the remarkable recovery of white rhino numbers over the last century. Today three out of every four rhinos alive are found in this one country. Yet, rhino deaths from poaching continue to rise. As of 16 October 2012, 455 rhinos have been illegally killed for their horns this year. Rhino numbers continue to grow as more are born than are dying – even when poaching mortalities are taken into account. However, we are coming ever closer to the danger zone where populations start to decline. WWF urges all South Africans to play a part in rhino protection at this pivotal point in their future. Report threats to rhinos or any signs of suspicious behaviour on the Department of Environmental Affairs Rhino Hotline: 0800 205 005. www.wwf.org.za

Please help us ensure all endangered species survive at least One More Generation... and beyond.

Rhino Letter Writing Campaign Two elementary students (Carter who is now almost 12 and his sister Olivia who is now 10) from the USA started their own non-profit organization called One More Generation (OMG) back in 2009.

Carter and Olivia recently launched their Rhino Letter Writing Campaign and are aiming to collect over 1,000 letters from concerned people all over the world, asking President Zuma of South Africa to help stop poaching before it is too late for Rhinos. We recently read the horrific article about the baby Rhino which had been hacked up by poachers and it just made us sick. We are very excited to be connecting with all the South African schools, teachers, parents and students and welcome letters in support of our campaign. The below information will give you everything you need. We have set April 1st. as the cut-off date for receiving our last letter for the campaign. Please send your letters to linda@childoftheuniverse.co.za who will forward everything on to us. Child of the Universe will be giving away surprise hampers to the first 30 people who write in. Here are a few links to various templates we have on our site where people can either download the pre-written letter to President Zuma or they can download the blank template and write their own letter. We even have rhino colouring pages for the younger kids who want to send a message to President Zuma, get your parents or teachers to scan your drawings and pictures in and email them to Child of the Universe.

Click on the letter or picture below that you would like to use to get your message to President Zuma:

Dear President Zuma Letter Template (4) Blank Letter for President Zuma 1. Daddy Rhino Colouring Page 2. Mommy Rhino Colouring Page 3. Mommy and Baby Rhino Colouring Page 4. Orphaned Baby Rhino Colouring Page

We believe that the solution to saving species like the Rhino can only be achieved through education. Once we collect at least 1,000 letters from this campaign, we will travel to South Africa to hand deliver the letters to President Zuma to show him that the whole world is begging him to get involved. Thank you Carter, Olivia & Jim Reis

Our Mission Statement: We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of endangered species and our environment. Our goal is to ensure all endangered species survive at least One More Generation‌ and beyond. www.onemoregeneration.org

CREATIVE IDEAS

Beauty Without Cruelty est. 1975 is an animal rights organisation with a primary objective to educate and inform the public about the exploitation, abuse and suffering of animals and to offer humane non-animal alternatives to replace cruel and harmful lifestyle choices. Humane education is the key to changing people’s attitudes towards animals; they have lives that are meaningful to them and although they may be different from humans, that does not mean they are inferior! All life is valuable and BWC promotes respect and consideration for all species, including invertebrates. BWC will work with other organisations on educational programmes designed to encourage compassion, respect and care for animals especially in young people, which will in turn lead to a the humane treatment of humans and a more compassionate society. It is only through the generosity of the public that we can continue fighting animal exploitation and we rely on public support through donations, annual support and the WW MySchool/ Planet/ Village card. Please visit www.bwcsa.co.za for information on the many issues that require attention, including pet shops (as opposed to adopting from shelters) our humane guide for personal care and household cleaners, wildlife exploitation and extermination, animals in entertainment, foie gras, cosmetic and medical testing and more.

Ten Cat Commandments for their humans 1. Acknowledge that I am Cat - no other is above Me. Not even you. 2. Anyone who says I am "just a cat" is not worthy of your time and attention. 3. My affection is mine to dole out, it cannot be forced. Don't try. 4. When people visit, remember I have teeth and will defend myself if necessary. If I flee, do not reveal my choice hiding spots. 5. The fur I shed is my gift to you, so I am with you wherever you go. It is not my fault when you choose garments that do not match my fur color. 6. Did you know my sense of smell is 12 times better than yours? So as much as you hate a smelly litter box, it bothers me 12 times as much! Please help keep it clean, and we'll both be happier. 7. I have a mind of my own. Please do not be upset if I like the packaging better than the expensive toy you just bought me, or the bag you brought it home in. Just be grateful I like something. 8. Pay attention. I am not going to be able to tell you if I am not feeling well, and besides, I don't like showing weakness. I am a cat, the top of the food chain and social order. But if you notice a big change in my behavior that may mean a trip to the vets is in order. 9. If you leave it on a counter, it's fair game. Ditto that small trash can. If you treasure that pen, or piece of paper or knickknack - hide it away. After all, I keep my best toys hidden, you should, too. But the spot under the refrigerator is mine, find your own spot. 10. Please have me spayed or neutered. Remember how hard it was being a hormonal teenager? How'd you like to have to live through that several times a year? I don't want to, and believe me, I will let you know! IF YOU ARE A HUMAN WITH ‘CATTITUDE’ AND WOULD LIKE TO ADOPT A KITTY OR TWO PLEASE CONTACT SARIE GREEF ON 083-658-1910. (Gauteng based)

What a waste! Hate it. Bag it. Ignore it. Dump it. Food Waste: The smell, the rot, the flies. Food waste is the bane of our lives. What happens to food waste once it’s been thrown ‘away’? The truth is, there is no ‘away’. Food waste dumped in landfills produces Methane (Co2e emissions which are 25 times more dangerous than the carbon dioxide from your car’s exhaust). This waste is a breeding ground for flies, foul odors and dangerous bacterial diseases such as Salmonella and E-Coli. It also contaminates above and underground water. Food waste shouldn’t be seen as ‘waste’. It can be turned into something of real value. What is the solution? Well, as always, nature has the answer. The invisible miracle workers without whom our planet wouldn’t survive: bacteria and fungi. Earth Probiotic is a food waste recycling company which utilizes beneficial bacteria or ‘effective microorganisms’ to break down and ferment food waste, easily and safely recycling it into food for your soil. This little miracle of nature is called ‘Bokashi’. Developed in the 1980s by a Japanese soil scientist Bokashi is the Japanese word for ‘fermented organic matter’. So how does it work? Using air tight digester bins, ALL food-waste, including cooked and uncooked meat, sea-food, onions, citrus, potatoes and food scraps, are layered with Bokashi bran and kept sealed. In the anaerobic digester the Bokashi microbes ferment the food-waste stopping rotting and ridding it of pathogens and foul odors. Once full, the closed bin is left to stand for two weeks to complete the fermentation process. Contents are then buried into soil or composted with garden clippings where it rapidly turns back into microbe rich soil or compost. No smells, no flies and no greenhouse gas emissions. Now instead of your food-scraps being waste, with Bokashi you can turn it into a 100% natural, highly beneficial food for your soil. To get started visit Earth Probiotic's online store at www.earthprobiotic.com and order your Food Waste recycling start up kit for only R380 (ex delivery). You will received 2x 20L digester bins (available in black or white) and 2kg of Bokashi, all proudly produced right here in South Africa.

THE SWINGING ROPE - A Tao Story of Sharing by Helen Hansen

Swinging is David's favourite thing to do. His dad has hung a knotted rope on an old yellow wood tree at the bottom of their front garden. It floats in the spring breeze, lies motionless in the summer heat, twirls with the autumn leaves and swells up in the wet winter months. All the while remaining a faithful companion to David. Every day after school David rushes to the yellow wood, holds tightly onto the dangling rope and jumps up to greet his plaited buddy. Some days his mom pushes him, other days he swings himself by rocking his body from side to side. Holding on with his legs and hands David loves to lean his head back and stare up at the tree above as he spins around and around. He says it is the most amazing feeling. One day David's friends from next door were visiting. Sebastian, Mila and David played all sorts of games together by the yellow wood. The rope of course is included in most games. It is the door bell for the tree house; the den during 'catch' and it even helps the thief escape during cops and robbers. Just before home time the children were swinging around just for fun. Nearby the moms were chatting. As the rope spun around in big circles each child took a turn to jump on for a joyful ride. Glorious smiles, sparkling eyes and tinkling laughter filled the warm summer air. Suddenly everything changed. As the rope moved to Mila for her turn David stepped forward and grabbed it. "It's my rope," he said. Mila squealed in dismay: "It's my turn!" By now the rope had stopped it's gentle circulating flow. It was hanging limply, waiting to see what would happen next. David began pulling himself up the rope holding onto it with all his might. He felt as if his old plaited buddy was being taken away. David felt scared. "Give the rope back to my sister," shouted Sebastian taking hold of the rope.

David kicked down at Sebastian's hand. "Time to come in," called David's mom. David slid off the rope. He was furious. Horrible words flew out of his mouth. "Time Out!" called his mom. While David sat in Time Out, Sebastian and Mila had their last swing before going home. "It's not fair," moaned David to his mom, "they get to carry on swinging while I have to sit here." "Why are you here?" asked his mom. "I took the rope away from Mila." "What stopped when you took the rope away?" "The roped stopped swinging," answered David. "Mmmm... and you stopped sharing," added his mom. "But it's mine." "Nobody is going to take the rope away," assured David's mom. "In fact, the more you share the rope, or other things, the more others will share with you. It's one of life's Golden Rules: Give More – Get More." "I will try," said David. "I want to share. I like to share." David kept his word and tried to share as much as he could. If he stopped and clung too tightly to one of his things, automatically the circle of sharing stopped. He stopped receiving from others, he was no longer included in turns and the fun disappeared. However, when David did share his world became a happier place. Remember to keep the rope moving and keep sharing it; it will always come back to you. You will never miss a turn as long as you remain in the circle of sharing.

TIKA and LION By Angela Quinn

One icy cold morning a soft fluffy lion was found in a park in a far away country called England. Lion had dropped out of a little boy’s backpack and had crawled under the merrygo-round in the night for shelter. The park-keeper took the lion down to the local charity store to see if he could find a new home for him. Lion was placed in the window of the shop along with a whole lot of other soft fluffy animals of many different types. He sat there for a couple of days, just chatting to all the animals and watching people go by, and hoping that one day, he would have his own little ‘human’ to love him again. One afternoon, just as it was about to get dark, a lady saw Lion in the charity store window and immediately thought that he couldn’t possibly be happy in such cold weather. She came from Africa and knew that lions didn’t like the cold very much. She also knew of someone who would love Lion very much so she went in and bought him, took him home and gave him a warm soapy bath, dried his beautiful hair and told him that he was going back to Africa... the country that he belonged in.

Lion was so excited, he loved the sound of sunny South Africa and he was told that there was a very special baby girl who he was going to live with. He had a couple of weeks to wait until his new ‘aunty’ came to fetch him. The trip from England to South Africa was so much fun, Lion went on a big aeroplane for the first time. He was comfortable and warm, tucked into a bag with lots of snugly soft gloves and jerseys and hats. The first time he met his new little girl Lion fell in love, this was his new ‘human’ and her name is Tika. The minute her Mommy unpacked Lion she grabbed him, kissed him hello, tucked him under her arm and loved him with all her heart. She was only a tiny girl when she first made friends with Lion and she took him everywhere with her. Every night when she went to bed she had her bottle in one hand and Lion very closely hugged to her heart. He made her feel safe and she made him very happy. Tika has just turned 5 years old and Lion must be about 7 years old, he is not as fluffy as he used to be. Over the years of camping and going to school with Tika he has had a couple stitches and bumped his head a few times, but Tika just cuddles him and makes it all better. Lion is happy.
