IS YOUR CAR HOLIDAY READY?

OUT & ABOUT

For many South Africans the holidays are tantalisingly close and you’re already mentally dipping your toes into the ocean, but before you’re relaxing on the beach you need to get your car in tiptop shape. Indwe Risk Services gives you an essential checklist so that your car is as ready for the holidays as you are. CHECK YOUR LICENCE It’s pretty easy to forget when you have to renew your car and driver’s licenses, so be sure to check that both are up to date. If you have to renew them before going on holiday, remember that you now have to provide proof of residence.

VEHICLE SERVICE It’s a good idea to get your car serviced, especially if you have a long drive to your holiday destination. This will take care of any major problems and repairs, reducing the risk that you’ll be stuck on the side of the road.

VEHICLE CHECK While your service should make your car roadworthy, take some time to give your vehicle a once-over. This includes checking the tread and pressure of all tyres (including the spare), ensuring that you have enough fluids (e.g. oil and water), that your windscreen has no cracks, that your brakes, belts and battery are in good condition, and that your windscreen wipers and all lights (inside and out) are working. If you’re transporting passengers make sure that the seatbelts are working correctly. Be prepared for a breakdown or emergency by having the following items in the boot of your vehicle: a first-aid kit, water and non-perishable food, jumper cables, a blanket, a flashlight and batteries, a container for petrol, flares, reflective triangles, rope for towing, and basic tools.

PLANNING A GPS is a handy gadget, particularly if you’re travelling somewhere new, as it will help you avoid the frustration of getting lost. Plan your drive in advance so you know your route and where you can stop for breaks and to refuel. Try to avoid peak travel times and always inform a friend or family member about your route and estimated arrival time. Store emergency contact numbers in your phone so they are easily accessible in case you need immediate help. Keep your phone fully charged or have a spare battery.

ON THE DRIVE Get enough sleep before you set off and stay hydrated during your journey. It’s recommended that you stop for a rest every two hours, and where possible let another eligible driver take over. Stopping regularly gives you and your passengers (and especially kids) a chance to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. It’s essential that you stop driving if you are tired. With the extra volumes of traffic on the road during the festive season, it’s important that you take precautions to avoid car trouble by getting your vehicle road-trip ready. Drive safely, be patient and enjoy the journey.

ARE YOU COVERED? Make sure the vehicle you are driving is properly insured, and remember that there are different types of cover, such as comprehensive, third party only, and third party, fire and theft insurance. If you are a passenger in someone else’s vehicle, check that the car you are travelling in is insured. For peace of mind, find out from your broker or insurer what is and is not covered in your policy.

For any assistance speak to an Indwe Risk Services advisor today on 0860 13 13 14.

BUDGET FOR THETIME HOLIDAY SEASON SPENDING QUALITY WITH YOUR KIDS WITHOUT BREAKING THE BUDGET

By Kathryn Main

South Africa is a buy-now, pay-later society. The effects on young people’s financial literacy are thus characterized by the same behaviour patterns as parents and society. These are high credit and high consumer behaviour with very little savings, and in turn high social risk behaviour. Money Savvy Kids(MSK) is working to change this disastrous pattern. According to the National Credit Regulator, about 10.3 million South Africans are finding it difficult to meet their monthly debt repayments. Octogen, which specialises in financial wellbeing, reports that in 2016 the average household spent a massive 49% of after-tax income on monthly debt repayments making it ‘difficult’ to ‘impossible’ to keep up with their debt repayments. Far too many South African consumers go into the festive season saddled with debts they can’t comfortably repay, and with little or no savings and after a holiday spending spree, end up even worse off in the new year.

MSK is not just a product. It is a pathway to developing mind-sets that will ensure South Africa’s children not only work their way out of poverty, but that they have the tools to stay out. On that note, we are offering tips to smart spend this holiday season and have a no worry start to the new year. 

Set a budget for holiday season expenses like presents, gifts and entertainment

Budget for January expenses like school uniforms and stationery and do your back-toschool shopping before your holiday shopping.

Don’t spend what you don’t have! Don't shop on credit.

Gifts are a huge expense. It takes courage not to overspend! Work out some guidelines around buying gifts with your extended family. Once you know who you are buying for, budget an amount per gift, and stick to it.

Don’t be tempted to buy anything other than what you’ve budgeted for. Avoid the impulse purchase!

Keep in mind the old cliché that it’s the thought that counts. Something small and personal, something homemade, or even a heartfelt card, will be well appreciated.

Spend time with friends and family, for instance. If you’re a highly social person, it’s tempting to play host all season. You can just as easily be the life and soul at someone else’s party!

If you are entertaining, don’t be afraid to ask your guests to contribute. Ask each guest to bring along a salad or contribute a dish, and everyone should bring their own drinks.

Making your own decorations (or swapping old ones with friends and family) can reduce costs and be a lot of fun for the whole family.

With a bit of planning which involves budgeting and a lot of smart spending you will step into 2017 debt free and maybe even with a little bit of extra cash in the bank! Start planning now and smart spend, and live within your means !

By Linda Navon This past Friday afternoon I was sitting in the Spur at the Broadacres Shopping Centre, watching my granddaughter playing and working away on the cover of this latest edition of Conscious Life magazine. I had a dilemma, we were not able to catch up with the lovely lady who was going to be on the cover – everyone is on deadline at this time of year, so I was playing around with generic pictures of beautiful unknown women for the cover. From behind me I hear this… “Excuse me, but what are you doing?” I turned around and answered her, asked her who she is and immediately asked her if she would beautify our magazine. …And here we are, with the lovely Rebekah van Rooyen/Krossynski gracing our cover. Oh joy! Rebekah is super gorgeous with an easy confident manner and very approachable. She had her little son, Tristan, with her, who is equally friendly and endearing. So while the kids played on the jumping castle, had faces painted and stuck tattoos on themselves, we chatted and she educated me (the unenlightened) on the topic of being a Mrs South Africa.

What motivated you to enter the 2016 Mrs. South Africa competition – besides the fact that you are gorgeous? “Blush” Thank you. I am very humbled by that comment. I think it was something I had to do to remember who I was before marriage and baby, as a women we can get very lost in the wife and mom roll. Through this experience, it helped me become the better version of myself. It brought me back to me, It gave more time for to myself, I allowed myself to be a bit selfish again and do things for me and only me. Since the Mrs SA experience, I have found my passion again for modeling, radio and events. It just reignited my passions, and realize, that it doesn’t matter your age, or that you are a mom, your dreams are still very important and you should still accomplish your life goals. Your circumstances may change but you don’t need to change. Focus on yourself no matter what, strive for the best. If anything it will make you a better wife and mom. I feel very blessed this year. I truly am happy I have found my purpose again.

Was there any conflict between all the women who entered, like spitefulness etc? Funny enough we actually formed such a sisterhood. There were certain women that were spiteful and the jealousy would show, but the majority was actually very pleasant. I have actually made some good friends. I think because most of the women who entered are accomplished, wives, mothers, business women, and have already have achieved so much in life, so no matter the outcome, life is beautiful and we are already blessed. We had the attitude that; girls compete with each other, women empower one another. Would you enter again? I got what I need from the whole experience, and am grateful, but I never go back in life, I am someone who always looks forward and upwards. What is your approach to living an eco or earth friendly lifestyle? Do you check that the products you use are not tested on animals; do you recycle your trash, buy organic etc? I absolutely look at if products are tested on animals. This makes me so angry and I would hate to be associated with such brands. I try to recycle as much as possible, and buy organic products where I can, I still feel South Africa needs more organic shops and more education on the matter. I actually used to have a beauty salon, where I only used organic products. This is very important to me. My hope is that more South Africans opt for eco living.

What did you do the first time he said the ‘F’ word? (…or what will you do?) hahahaha….thank goodness he has never said it. I think he knows he shouldn’t say it some how..I mean lets be honest we have all said it some time in front of our kids, whether we like to admit it or not…so thank goodness on that one. But I think I have heard the s@#t word? Hahaha… the best thing to do is ignore them, not make a big deal about so hopefully they forget that word..and then NEVER SAY IT AGAIN……… Would you say that your and your husband’s parenting styles are in sync and progressive? Some what… I feel if they are not it would just be a disaster, so thank goodness we really want the same for our child. It makes bringing up kids a little easier…so far.. so good…..

REBEKAH AS A CHILD As a child, what was your “when I grow up” aspiration? What were your ambitions as a child, and if you could start all over, would you still choose the same path you have taken? Since a child, I wanted to be an actor, a model, something that was to do with drama and cameras. I also always wanted to have a business, I was never someone who could see myself working for a boss. I cant say I would do anything different cause I wouldn’t have what I have now, and have this beautiful boy of mine. So I am where I'm supposed to be….. What would you say the most important quality is that your parents taught you that still serve you today? Family is everything. My dad has also been such a great role model for me, on how women should be treated. They taught us that we are capable of accomplishing everything and anything our hearts desire. My mom has taught me how to love my child, she is the most selfless person I know. I am very blessed, and couldn’t be more thankful from how they have brought me up and have instilled such great qualities in me which have prepared me for life. Forever grateful. Were you an ‘A’ student at school or was there a rebellious side? Hmmmm…….how many people see this mag? Hahaha…I think I was a good student. My sister was more the A type student, I was more the girl, who wondered why we paid school to be there, and why they were not paying us? Think it was the entrepreneur in me……

What was the most mischievous/naughtiest thing you ever did growing up? When my girlfriends and I, lied about going to a rave. We were about 14, and in those days, raves were huge. We found a pamphlet, and there was a rave called Mother returns, well of course we had to go check this out. We all lied to our parents, I told them I was sleeping at X, X says she's sleeping at Y, Y says she's sleeping at Z, the only problem is I had a letter with all our plans for the night, and left it on my bed the night we left…well, we were busted to say the least……. Looking back it was very naughty….and very irresponsible….. Were you popular at school? I had my “group” I have never like having a big group of friends. I like having friends I can count on one hand, that way, secrets stay secrets, and I feel the love…needless to say I still have the same friends as school……..I was popular with the boys though….hahahaha…… Do you have many friends that you have kept in touch with since being a child? Exactly the same friends as school. We have all changed and grown in so many ways, but we have managed to keep in touch. I have made some wonderful friends after school, but my school friends are like my sisters. Always will be.

REBEKAH NOW How do you fit in a career and having a family? What does a typical day/week in the life of Rebekah look like? Its definitely a bit of juggling and working late nights. My day consists of breaking up each and everything I do. A typical day in the life of Rebekah is being woken up by my 3 year old, my natural alarm clock, and the cutest alarm clock in the world, with the best morning kisses. Then breakfast and off to school we go, straight to the office to work on events, then after lunch straight to radio, where I co-host on the afternoon drive at Mix FM. From 3pm-6pm. I get home around 6:45 then its bathing my child, reading a book, putting him to bed, finishing off my work and off to bed. Some morning you will find me working out at Switch Playground. You will also find me squeezing in meetings to discuss our NPO. How did you get involved with ‘Confidence in Kids’ and what is your input for the cause? This is a crazy story, I happened to be introduced to a man called Sammy Dollar Sehoene, he is an author of a book called Dialogue between DreamMakers, I was introduced to Sammy by a wonderful woman by the name of Rita, she is the owner of the Imbizo Shisanyama, which happens to be in Tembisa. They were also my support and gold sponsor during the Mrs SA competition, well, she thought we were very similar, we finally met on a freezing winter morning, during a soup kitchen morning, and from that day on decided we need to set up something together. We felt the need to come together and help the kids of South Africa, we wanted to install confidence and motivate children to stay in school, we wanted to teach them entrepreneurial skills, and how to build a business. So Confidence in Kids is all about confidence, motivation, and entrepreneurial skills. There are 3 members at the moment, and one sponsor, we are always though looking for more sponsors and donations towards our schools. We are also about to launch a board game, which we are very excited about.

How are you using your experience as a finalist for ‘Mrs. South Africa’ to inspire others? Through my NPO- Confidence in Kids. We are teaching confidence, motivation for staying in school, and entrepreneurial skills. Little girls really look up to me, so it feels my duty to only teach them how to become the better version of themselves. You are very confident, is this natural or did you have to work on it? I think I have naturally always been a confident person, who loves to talk, who is very passionate and just loves life. But being a model and actress from such a young age and travelling the world, I have had to be more brave and out there, so this may have helped build confidence as well… Do you get nervous before going on air or is this just another natural talent of yours? I would be lying if I said I was not nervous at first. There a lot of listeners and everyone is judging, I am now very used to it and love my job. The most important thing to me is just being myself, you cant please everybody, but I am who I am…. Where do you see you career in 5 or 10 years’ time? Retired…hmmmm…..and maybe living on a beautiful island called Mauritius. You can visit anytime…….?!? What is the most expensive item you have ever bought for yourself? A car!!! What are your guilty pleasures? How do you relax, do you have any special treats for yourself? Like pigging out on chocolate or spending the day in a spa, or catching up on TV series? Watching reality TV, I am a little addicted. And of course a day at a spa…guilty as charged……

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Do you have any hobbies? I used to..but these days with no extra time, spending the hours with my son has to be the best time…. I try to take full advantage of free time, and really just do fun things with him and just hang out together. But I used to enjoy doing art, cooking and running….. Name 4 items on your bucket list? Take Tristan to Disney Land, I have been and can’t wait to take him. Go to Hollywood. Buy a house in Mauritius. Visit an ashram in India. Learn French. What are you currently reading and what are your 4 favourite books? I haven’t had much time for books this year, but I mostly read motivating books. Any books by Robin Sharma will do. absolutely love that man. What music do you prefer and who are your favourite SA Bands? I like music that means something to me and I can relate to the song. Fills my soul. I love the rolling stones. My favourite SA band however are Parlotones. But I must say that I absolutely solute Goldfish as well.

Do you have a role model in your life, who and why? Mom and Dad, so many reasons…I wouldn’t know where to start…. Who is the most famous person you have ever met and under what circumstances? Angelina Jolie. I was actually asked to act as her photo double on a Hollywood film called Beyond Borders. If you look closely, you will see each scene, where Angelina Jolie is not speaking, it’s actually me…

On taking the chance and entering Mrs South Africa, I knew I would meet like minded, powerful, empowering, gorgeous women. But one woman that stood out for me was Unaiza Moideen, from The Brow Bar and My Skin Centre. Having studied beauty therapy and venturing into becoming a beauty therapist and owning a salon in the retail space I was blown away by this concept of both stores, and the passion and professionalism of Unaiza and the whole team. Being a model, TV presenter and actor from a young age, I always had the need and pressure to have perfect, healthy, glowing skin, so it came naturally to me to look after it, having My Skin Centre near by with everything they have to offer gave me a feeling, that I could take all the information I’ve learnt along the way and now enhance my knowledge and keep up to date with the ongoing trends. Ageing gracefully, and as they say prevention is better than cure. Thanks to the out of the box concept of The Brow Bar, where I was pleasantly surprised, no appointment needed, and I finally found someone in Johannesburg that specializes in threading. All the therapists are brilliantly trained and friendly. Brows not only frame your face but also give you, your true identity.

Thank you again for being an official Mrs South Africa sponsor! See you soon

5 Ways Laughter Benefits Your Health “Laughter is the best medicine” may sound a bit cliché, but there is quite a bit of truth underlying this old saying. In fact, research, including our own here at Murad, has unveiled that laughter actually is a powerful “prescription” that helps both mental and physical health. Here are a few great reasons why you should allow yourself to indulge in a full-blown belly laugh:  Laughter can be relaxing. After a hearty belly laugh, some people can be heard sighing as they come down from the convulsions of laughter. The relaxation that follows a good laugh can lower blood pressure and reduce stress.  Laugher reduces stress hormones. That overload of mental tension really melts away from the forefront of your consciousness when you just laughed so hard you cried. Laughter can be a great mood regulator in a stressful situation. Make the most of opportunities to change a dark or fraught emotional tone with some laughter.

 Laughter increases blood flow. Increased blood flow is good for the heart, blood vessels and the cardiovascular system overall. Laughter is a mini workout and we should take advantage of that fun way to experience some light exercise.  Laughter boosts endorphins. Laughing gets our endorphins flowing. These natural feelgood chemicals give our brains a boost and help to give us a more positive outlook on the day.  Laughter as a coping skill. “Frantic.” “Out of control.” “Overwhelming.” These words are sometimes used to describe our feelings about trying to cope with life, work, kids, marriage and the myriad responsibilities on our plates. We cannot always predict the stresses of life but our reactions to them can dictate how much negative impact they can have on our day. Sometimes, the healthiest option in the face of stress overload is to stop and laugh.

In short, laughter can help you change your perspective — and change your life for the better. Article by Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD, a world renowned skincare expert and founder of the Inclusive Health movement.

WISE WORDS BY NEALE DONALD WALSCH You need not be concerned about money. Be concerned, instead, about joy. How much joy are you experiencing in this moment? How much joy are you bringing to this moment? The joy you experience will be the joy you bring. If you are waiting for joy to be brought to you, you do not understand what you are doing here. And if you think that joy has anything to do with money, you really do not understand what you are doing here. There is a person waiting right now, right this very minute, for you to uplift them. Do that...and you will be rich.

The universe is conspiring in your favor. It is placing before you in every moment all of the right and perfect people, circumstances, and situations with which to answer life's only question: Who am I. Have you decided yet?

Your job, your invitation from the Universe, is to give people back to themselves. It is really a very easy thing to do -- yet it can affect a person mightily. All you have to do is look for the best in that person, and then show it to them, right then and there. Describe it. Admire it. Thank them for it. Do this for three people every day and watch how your whole life can change. At last you will realize what you are doing here. All the rest will be just stuff and nonsense.

On the day you leave your body -what I like to call your Continuation Day -- you will be greeted by everyone you have ever loved in any way for any reason...and, standing in front of the group, every person who has been so very dear to you. It will be a grand and glorious reunion, with joy and laughter and pure wonderment filling every heart and soul! We are not simply biological creatures, the result of a happenstance of chemical processes, walking the earth just trying to get through it all with a minimum of harm to ourselves and others. We are Creations of the Deity, Products of the Divine, God. If you Individuations truly desire toofexperience the world of your highest imagining, then you must love unconditionally, share freely, communicate openly, and create cooperatively. You must decide that you are truly are all One, that what is good for another is good for you.

The Universe invites you now to be someone who is making a life, rather than a living. Move toward your passion. Express through your daily work and your daily activities what it is that lights up your soul. Do not believe those who say that you cannot do this. Do it anyway.

In every moment of every day, through a thousand individual manifestations of Itself, is Divinity revealing Itself. Yet we do not see. Or we see, but do not believe. We do not believe the evidence of our own eyes. We do not hear the truth in the sounds of silence. Listen to your Self today. You have

been telling yourself something very important for days now. Today, listen more closely. And heed. Trust the still, small voice within. Your soul is gently leading you to your next step.

You are beautiful. Yes, you. Look at yourself in the mirror. If God has ever created anything in the universe more beautiful than you, it is a secret. Because nowhere can it be found. You are a being of beauty. Share the beauty of you today, and you will experience it! Neale Donald Walsch is a modern day spiritual messenger whose words continue to touch the world in profound ways. Neale spent the majority of his life thriving professionally, yet searching for spiritual meaning before experiencing his now famous conversation with God. The Conversations with God series of books that emerged from those encounters has been translated into 37 languages, touching millions and inspiring important changes in their day-to-day lives.

You may be facing a challenge right now, or perhaps an important question you've been pondering, but you're not facing this alone. You can ask God for help. You, too, can have a conversation with God. I promise. So just take a breath right now and ask God to tell you exactly what you need to hear. Then...listen. Carefully.

You are eternally abundant. I know, I know...it sometimes doesn't seem that way, but the truth is, you always have everything you need, right here, right now. Do you know how I know? You're still here. If you hadn't always been given everything you ever needed, you wouldn't be here. Now all that is necessary is for you to understand this deeply. Then, stop worrying. You'll be okay.

There is nothing that is permanent. There is nothing that stays. Everything goes. Which is an interesting fact about life. Everything goes. And when you under stand this, everything goes. There are no restrictions anymore. You can do anything you wish, say anything you wish, think anything you wish, because you're not trying to hold onto anything anymore

We are given the gift of God's joy and God's peace in our heart, and offered an invitation to share it with everyone whose life we touch. I have come to see that all of life's circumstances, conditions, events, and experiences have been sent to me as opportunities to do that.

7 Things You Need to Know About Your Highly Sensitive Child Discover Their Dominant Element For Better Understanding By Robin Ray Green

Is your child highly sensitive? Is he easily affected by the emotions of others? Is he irritable or overstimulated after school? Is he highly fussy, picky, or dramatic? Does he have an “imaginary” friend? If so, chances are you have a highly sensitive child. What is it like to be a highly sensitive kid? You may already have a good idea, but if not, imagine being unable to distinguish your own emotions from those of the people around you! Everything you feel is so strong and overwhelming, yet you can’t find the words to explain how you feel!

For generations highly sensitive kids have been misunderstood. They've been told, often unkindly, to “stop being so sensitive,” to “get over it,” and to “toughen up.” It’s no wonder highly sensitive kids grow up thinking there’s something wrong with them. What most people don’t know is that highly sensitive kids are physical, emotional or intuitive empaths. Some kids are all three. Through one of more of their senses, they can easily feel energies that are beyond the physical realm. This is difficult enough to comprehend as an adult, much less as a child.

How to Help Your Highly Sensitive Child It’s incredibly important to make sure your child’s fundamental needs are met. They need to be loved and to eat, sleep, play, and move in just the right amounts. They need to avoid chemicals and excess sugar because their bodies are sensitive, too. When their needs are not being met, it will be even harder for them to control their sensitivities.

Here are 7 things you need to know to understand your highly sensitive child. He or she:       

Easily picks up on the emotions and or thoughts of others Can sense stressed energy in people, places, and things May feel overwhelmed or unsafe in new or crowded environments Has a tendency for food and environmental sensitivities and allergies May have responses that are overly dramatic, emotional, or seemingly inappropriate May feel the pain or suffering of people, animals, or the environment in their own body May feel pain and discomfort more intensely than others

Discover Your Child’s Five Element Type One of the things that has helped me the most in understanding highly sensitive kids is the Five Element system of Chinese medicine, a framework that allows us to determine each person’s unique nature. The Five Elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each Element has corresponding physical characteristics, personality traits, strengths, and challenges that shape each child’s overall health and way of being in the world. It is thought that one particular way of being will influence your child’s personality, health, and temperament above all others—their Dominant Element. Once you discover your child’s Dominant Element, you’ll have a better understanding of how your child’s sensitivities will manifest. You’ll know how to support your child physically and emotionally to help them understand and use their gifts.

You can discover your child’s 5-Element type by taking the 5-Element Questionnaire on my website, or in my book Heal Your Child from the Inside Out, and learn more about helping your child thrive.

It’s our calling as parents and grandparents to assist our children in harnessing their sensitivities, allowing them to shine their lights brightly. They are going to grow up to be the healers, helpers, peacekeepers, change makers, and environmental stewards that will usher in a new level of consciousness. Let’s make sure they thrive!

Robin Ray Green helps parents harness the power of the 5-Elements of Chinese medicine to create healthy, harmonious families that thrive! Pediatric acupuncture specialist, Mother, Author.

By Julie Kleinhans

As a parent, it's extremely easy to worry about your child's future. You want the very best for them. As they are getting older, you may find yourself becoming more concerned about what their future will look like and if they will become a confident, happy, productive adult. First I'd like to ask you two important questions: 1. Do you want your child to engage in a future that they are passionate about? 2. Are you open to your child exploring any passion that they have?

I ask these questions because many parents have pre-determined ideas about what their children should do with their life or what they think their child would succeed in. In order for your child to truly find their way, they will need your support to travel any path.

I’ll give you an example. When I was a teacher, I remember having a quiet boy named Jordan in class. He didn’t like school very much because he didn’t feel that he was a good student. One thing he was passionate about was video games. He loved all aspects of the video-gaming world. When I spoke to Jordan about all of the possibilities of having a career in the video gaming industry, his entire perspective about his future changed. A shift in his perspective allowed him to get excited about the possibilities of himself as an expert in video gaming, making lots of money designing cool games.

The thought that he was talented at something that can be applied to his future career helped him to feel much more confident about his abilities. You can nurture this confidence and excitement with your own children. Here are three things you can do right now to inspire your children and remove your own worry.

Stop Comparing Your Child to Other Children in a Way that Puts Them Down It is very hurtful to a child when they are compared to other children in a way that puts them down. Instead, use comparison in a way that lifts everyone up by showing your child the value that everyone contributes. For example: “Sam is great at math and doing well in his math classes. Becky, you may be struggling with math right now, but that’s okay. You will eventually learn what you need to know. You are doing so well in your English class. We are proud of you and Sam exactly as you are.” It is important to boost confidence in every child so they can thrive.

Help Your Child Focus on What They Enjoy Doing Every person is talented in so many things. Including you – Mom or Dad! Help your child to focus and nurture what they do enjoy doing and get creative with them to think outside the box. You may want to make a list with your children of the things you each really enjoy doing. This could be a fun family activity for everyone to write their lists together and then participate in those activities on the list. Get ready to think in and outside the box. For instance, things like painting and playing catch may be on the list. Some other things people enjoy doing but don’t always think of is making lists, planning, cooking, reading, etc. Look at everything each of your enjoy doing and help each other with your “Enjoyment List”. You each may forget things you enjoy doing and reminding each other makes this an extra special family experience. You may be surprised what your children notice about you and they may be surprised about what you notice with them. Remember that so many things you enjoy can be turned into careers. A person that enjoys painting may become an artist, an art curator, own a gallery, etc. Your child may like to play catch now and in the future could do it professionally as a player, a coach, a manager, a sports news person, etc. Someone that enjoys making lists and planning may become a great project manager, travel agent or entrepreneur. Cooking is a great skill that can be applied to restaurants, cooking shows, books and more. Those that enjoy reading may become authors themselves, editors, proofreaders, book store owners or work in book publishing. There are a myriad of opportunities for any and all passions that you and your children have!

Find Your Child a Mentor in the Passion That They Have If your child is interested in a particular career, help them find an adult in that field to have a conversation with. I recommend having a conversation with this person first to be sure you are okay with your child learning from them. Then set up a phone call or an in-person meeting for your child. Your child can talk to this person about how they got to where they are today and some of the obstacles they overcame to succeed. Have your child make a list of everything they’d like to know and see about this career choice, so they can make the most out of their experience. Having a tour of the work facilities of this career would also be helpful so your child can envision if this is a place for them. It’s important for children to explore their passions without judgment. Allowing them to find their way will most certainly guarantee their success.

SPENDING QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR KIDS WITHOUT BREAKING THE BUDGET

By Kathryn Main

Holidays can be a great time to bond with your children and maybe even let your own inner child come out to play. In MSK fashion, we have some few holiday ideas to keep children occupied without breaking your bank account.  Make your own games. Get a supply of colored cards, children’s scissors, glue and anything else you may want to make some fun games. Games like Hoopla, Pin the Tail on the Donkey or Snakes and Ladders can all be easily made at home and will keep the children occupied for some time.

 Cooking and baking. Once a week plan a cooking or baking day. Involve the kids in the process from the beginning — let them chose from a selection of recipes that you have ingredients for. If the child can read, get them to read from the recipe book. Step by step, help them to work through the instructions. Try to avoid the temptation of doing it yourself.

 Build a garden patch. Dedicate a small patch in the garden to the kids. Plant flowers, herbs, lettuce — anything that grows quickly and gives them the satisfaction of having produced something. If your kids are small, just give them a spade, put on their old clothes, and let them loose.

 Go camping. Build a tent indoors or outdoors with blankets and sheets. Once the tent is up, give them a torch and a picnic to take with them. I guarantee you won’t see them for hours.

 Go on picnics. You don’t have to go far to have a picnic — give them whatever is in the fridge. You’d be amazed how once it is packed in a plastic container and eaten on a blanket on the grass, how much the atmosphere romanticizes the most boring of sandwiches.

 Have a treasure hunt. Make a treasure map with clues to find some treasure you have hidden somewhere in the garden. It doesn’t have to be expensive or big — any little treat will be exciting when it is found outdoors.

 Get jamming. Grab some musical instruments — things like bongos, shakers or tambourines, and get jamming. Get the kids to sing and dance along

 Paint. One of the nicest ways to express your creativity is to use paint. Get large sheets of paper and lots of paint. Go mad and use your hands and feet — it’s liberating. To avoid any stress, prepare the area well and cover with plastic or newspaper. Have some water on hand to wash when you are finished.

 Get into jewellery making. Go to a bead shop and stock up on beads, wire and clasps, and get busy making your own jewellery. This activity can be done with the smallest of children, just be sure to get appropriate bead sizes for different age groups. The children will be so proud to wear the jewellery that they have made.

 Have a garage sale. Get the kids to clear out their rooms and have a garage sale. You could sell some of your baking products and make lemonade. Pool all the money together and use it to pay for an outing for the whole family.

The Secret To Building Exercise Habits Most People Forget There is one thing that you need to develop an exercise habit that sticks that many people inexplicably discount. Exercise is a difficult habit to pick up. It is not enough just to set aside a particular period in the day and rely on willpower to follow through. Part of the reason is that people don’t necessarily start exercising because they enjoy it. Instead, they start exercising to lose weight or look better. When the changes are minimal, or not what they had hoped for, then it is easy to give up.

Internal rewards key to exercise habit New research finds that one key to getting the exercise habit is tapping in to intrinsic rewards. Intrinsic rewards are things like the pleasure we get from the activity itself.

This could be through socialising with others, the endorphin rush, or something else. When intrinsic, internal rewards are linked up with a particular, regular slot in the day for exercising, then the habit can flourish in the long term.

Finding the missing key, then, is all about identifying those highly personal intrinsic rewards. What is it about the exercise that makes you feel good? If the answer is nothing, then it is time to think about different types of exercise that do make you feel good.

For example, gyms are not for everyone, some people prefer to play sports in teams, others prefer exercising alone. Some people like rigid goals and structure, others prefer a more free-form approach. Find your pleasure and the habit is much more likely to stick.

By Guylin van den Berg The year has been long and we are all excited for the holidays that await in the not too distant future. For most of us crazy outdoor peeps, it means riding our bikes at a reasonable hour and not for 3 hours in the pitch darkness in order to get to the 8am meeting with a moaning boss. December is a great time to build the all-important base or foundation for your next year, it helps create a platform on which to build up to goal races or peak events. Base miles mean longer, slower rides to help the body build necessary endurance before adding intensity later on to tweak the engine. Base training is all about focussing on which zone you are riding in. Zones mean that your heart rate is at a percentage of your max. For example, if your heart rate is 200 max, then your base training zones, which are divided into 5 levels, will be between zone 1 and 2 and occasionally 3. Zone 1 and 2 will be 55-70% of your max, so referring to our example above, it will mean you ride between 110 beats per minute and 140 beats per minute (bpm). Staying in these zones will build on your aerobic capacity which ensures that your body will be able to ride a few hours at a steady pace. Focus on building in 2-3 week blocks. So for the first week, have a goal of let’s say 12 hours, then in week 2, we try achieve 14 hours and in week 3, 16 hours. You have to allow your body to rest too, so after the 2-3 week block, depending on what works for you, take a few days easy, allow the body to adapt.

Conscious Life Magazine

Rest allows all the body to benefit from the training done in the blocks. Another focus for December can be to increase your quality of your riding instead of the quantity. It will be better to get a proper 3 or 4 hour ride in, than try do 6 hours while stopping every 10km due to lack of fitness. Try to ride consistently with minimal stopping. Also try keep a high cadence, by this we mean 90-100 rpm. This helps your body and pedal stroke become more efficient. A great benefit is to have a coach which can assist in setting your correct zones and also guide you as to whether your plan is on track or help when you have other commitments to attend to. The idea of paying someone and having them give you feedback will also force you to stay within your zones. The biggest mistake we see is guys constantly riding in the wrong zones due to the guys they are riding with are too fast for them. We firmly believe you are doing more damage than rather focussing on training in your zones until you can progress to the point that riding with a group is still within your zones.

Leave Strava at home during base. Chasing Strava segments can be done after a firm base has been built and we are ready to move onto intensity and building for races or goals.

Enjoy your holidays and hope to see you out on the roads. For any further questions, do not hesitate to ask us at marketing@azzuricycling.com

Another tip that we have carried with us for a number of years is that during December rides, you remain seated as long as possible. So when climbing, stay seated ad only stand for short durations to relieve pressure. This technique helps with building pedal stroke strength during the base block.

If some of you are interested in learning more, visit www.usn.co.za. Otherwise we are always available at guylin@azzuricycling.com to answer all your questions. Our team is always happy to help you get the most our of cycling!!

Nutrition is also an important part during training as a whole, but particular attention needs to be made during December as with holidays it is easy to eat foods that hamper recovery and weight loss. Base is a great weight loss block as you are riding long durations in the fat burning zone 2. Focus on eating full meals with a balance of protein, veggies and carbs. For the December heat is South Africa, focus on replenishing liquids and keeping hydrated as it will affect tomorrow and the next day. We use the USN hydrator to replenish all our lost minerals during the ride but also help with a quicker recovery. This mix with ice is a killer. You will be wanting more after you get home in 30 degrees plus heat. We have organised great discount for you at www.usn.co.za and use the code “Guylin” to try some products. To finish off on our base discussion. End the ride with a light stretch. While the muscles are warm and you are still sweaty, it will help with recovery, loosening the muscles and feeling more comfortable on the bike. The longer rides tend to tighten the muscles due to a bit of overload and in return makes you uncomfortable on the bike as the muscles are shorter. A quick stretch of 20-30min will do you wonders.

Happy Cycling, remember, always be safe!

About Guylin: I have been racing for 12 years, 4 years on the road before coming back to the mountain biking side. I focus on the longer ultra-marathons on the South African circuit. Our races are average of 100km and take roughly 4-5 hours. I have competed in 5 Cape Epic’s with my best finish being 26th overall. I still love riding my bike every day and finishing off with a good coffee.

Christmas is a wonderful time for us humans, but sometimes we are so caught up in the festivities we forget about the dangers to our pets. There are lots of hazards that can cause major issues for our pets. Pets such as cats and dogs are normally in the house and even involved in some of the festivities, so they are more at risk. It’s important to be aware of the things that can harm your pets and keep them well away from them. Don’t leave things lying around and take extra precautions to keep things out of reach. Here are ten hazards for pets at Christmas time.

•Chocolate Chocolate is extremely poisonous to dogs. The higher the percentage the worse it is, dark chocolate causes the most problems. We all eat a lot of chocolate and often receive it as gifts at Christmas time. Keep chocolate away from dogs and pets throughout the festive season.

•Tinsel Tinsel is very dangerous for pets for a number of reasons. Firstly, they can get tangled up in it and even strangle themselves. Secondly, they may be tempted to eat it. Swallowing tinsel can cause major digestive issues and it can even get stuck in their stomach. If they try and eat it they may choke on it. Take care when using tinsel on your tree and around your home in December.

•Fairy lights Fairy lights present the same dangers as tinsel but there is also a chance of your pet getting electrocuted. Don’t let them anywhere near fairy lights and they may be tempted to chew on them. The glass in the lights can also cut your pet and cause serious issues if they swallow it. Keep all pets away from fairy lights.

•Overeating This may not seem like a serious problem but it is a big concern for pets. It’s so easy to overfeed pets over the festive season thinking we are spoiling them and making them happy. Don’t change their diet, stick to what you normally feed them. A lot of the foods we eat over Christmas are full of fat and your pet will pile on the pounds in no time. Obesity is a big concern for pets as it causes debilitating health and joint problems.

•Alcohol Alcohol is very toxic to dogs. It can cause nausea, vomiting, loss of coordination, disorientation, cardiac arrest, seizures and sometimes even death. Keep an eye on your pets when you are drinking alcohol to make sure they don’t try and steal any. Also be aware of foods that contain alcohol such as alcoholic chocolates.

•Christmas tree decorations All those fascinating decorations you put on your tree can be very intriguing to pets. They are in fun shapes and sizes and look like the perfect toys to play with, they are not. Christmas tree decorations are not made for pets and contain harmful things that your pet could swallow. Make sure your decorations are high enough and kept out of reach.

•Cooked meat bones Take care when throwing away cooked meat. Your pet could try and get into the bins and eat the bones. Cooked bones can be very dangerous to pets as they can splinter and get stuck in their stomach. Dispose of all meat safely where your pet can’t get to it. You may want to invest in a special rubbish bin that your pet can’t get into.

•Raisins and grapes Both grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs. Raisins are also in lots of different foods that we eat such as mince pies and Christmas pudding, so avoid giving your dog anything that might contain raisins. Raisins can cause kidney failure in some dogs.

•Christmas tree Believe it or not, your Christmas tree is also a hazard to your pets. Make sure it is placed in a safe place in the home and is securely properly. The last thing you want is for your Christmas tree to fall on top of your pet, some of the larger trees can be extremely heavy. If you have a natural tree you also need to be careful with the needles as they can get stuck in your pets feet and fur. If swallowed they can cause severe stomach issues. The water used to keep a Christmas tree nourished can also cause issues if your pet tried to drink it.

•Mistletoe and holly Mistletoe and holly are also poisonous for pets. Holly can cause severe gastrointestinal upset and mistletoe can cause mild gastrointestinal irritation. Other plants that are dangerous include lilies and daffodils.

“Dog’s do SPEAK, but only to those who know how to LISTEN” Orhan Pamuk

In one hasty sprint, this little creature lightens your stressful and tiring day with a playful manner and plenty of tricks. Before you know it, this little creature is not only considered a pet, but a companion and member of the family.

A parable about the Seven Aspects of Spiritual Intelligence On the Fifth Night is the extraordinary story of a man named Mark Hanson who loses his first wife to Huntington’s Disease … and then, on a fateful day, many years later, punches his second wife in the face in a moment of madness. That moment of madness is the start of Mark’s transformative journey along a path of mystical presences, unhinged reflections and surreal travels through space and time. Mark’s story blurs the lines between sanity and insanity, and between life and death. It stands as an eternal testament to the glorious mystery and uncharted depths of human consciousness.
