It is a common problem for the most of building systems to ignore the different lifetime between people and buildings , especially , like the changing of family populations and functions . This issue makes troubles that influent the ways users interact with their own space hugely , and there isn`t any certain principle , knowledge and material that users could follow and deal with spatial requirements which usually change in their lifes . In order to fix the space-changed problems , users started to build their houses in informal ways , like combining different materials simply or constructing without any clear planning . We can call those buildings like “ informal extensions” which cause messes to urban developments and expansions. To make sure that each space`s development could meet users`expectations , it is necessary to record habits and properties among the community and society , and those include schedules of different life styles 、ages、 genders and populations.

公共

Following many modular systems and the cases of Metabolic, all I wanted to design aren`t complete buildings , but a flexible building system, which is associated with workshop and main factory, and prototype to make residents be able to plan their own spaces orderly and satisfy their requirements. With that system`s helps , people couldn`t only plan their housings by themselves, but also product furniture and interior decoration with the remainder materials recycling from constructure waste .

The users could decide how to apply and decorate public spaces ,after they discussed or decide in other democratic ways .At the same time , they are also allowed to rent those empty areas to run business or personal functions ,like coworking space or personal clubs , that behavior makes living situations diverse. After all , the records would affect the way how neighbors decide to use the public areas or social activities , and accord those data to divide public areas into different hierarchies among each layers , especially in landings in staircases where are usually ignored by most people and are full of potential chances to be brought up better social places .

The camel`s back before the last straw

東海大學建築系 Tunghai University Department of Architecture 侯咖享 作品集 Portfolio Hou Chia Heng

The ancient Chinese said, “as if on the brink of an abyss,as if treading on thin ice”. For all of the advantages of human ingenuity and intelligence, it still pays to be respectful and cautious when met with the power of natural forces and the environment around us. Although people still tried to show their own ability to fight the natural principle many times, each experiment was done carefully, or they would have been destroyed when they were out of balance of nature and lose control. For example, in the hole bible, The Tower of Babel was built by the arrogant human kind who had ambitions to show their power and carry higher, and they believed they could overcome anything and problems whatever they met. Without any correct effective construction skills and experiences, the tower started crashing down, and so did the humans` pride.I want to seek the sense of the moment before the break the fragile balance and maintain it. It seems to be like the feeling of what is like people say “ the last straw that breaks the camel’s back” and present “ the camel`s back before the last straw “ in the architecture practice.

At first, I try to build a fragile structure model and look for the keypoints of “the last straw”, so I recorded some materials` detailed conclusions after had the stress test. Trying to figure out relationships among every conditions, the most important of them are materials` deformations when they resisted the gravity in the test, and it also plays an important role to show people`s desire of against the gravity and the fragile situation whatever the materials were.

I started to combine those frail devices which are made of iron sticks ︑ concrete and wood boards, and tried to make the structure frailer. According to the results and experience in the experiments, I built a rule system to show how every condition assemble and cause the results similar to “the last straw”, and didn`t only associate fragile conditions together, but also deleted those conditions making the structure model firmer, after my observation, all of the conditions could be realized as causal relationships.

To me, desires are coming from seeking infinite pleasure and sense, and in order to satisfy more desires, people use tools and materials to buildup or magnify what they look for so long. However, people must not be able to overstepthe balance between physical and imagination, and it is the only way to touch anedge of “the last straw” and create an extreme feelings, like treading on thin ice carefully.

CONCEPT & BACKGROUND

Statement Timber is a reversible 、 environmentallyfriendly and affordable architectural material in the world in now day. The model technology of manufacturing timber and taking their like architecture the material could maintain use period of timber in 50~100 years, at the same time, it is important and favorable to plan and regenerate the next generation of forestry stations, and make sure which would be a cycle system and wouldn`t only reuse timber, but also be economic to architect industries.

Project Definition In order tocreate good interaction between timber spaces and citizens, building public infrastructure, like an activity center or dome, is an easy way to let people know benefits of timber.

Conceptual After that, it is important to consider how to construct a huge structure with timber. Our concepties “creating a fluidity of spatial experience and showing advantage and toughness of timber with different kinds of wavy timber modular systems”. With technology of CLT`s (cross-laminated-timber) helps, it becomes easier to satisfy different situations in public spaces and combine different prototypes to create diverse layers in the project, like sometimes, it would be like a part of the corridor,Sometimes, it would be like a part of a roof, and sometimes, it would be like whole structure systems. Therefore,we imagine that this cur ved construction system shouldn`t only be taken as a façadeor decoration, but also be a part of space experience, and affect thoughtsand imaginations about the interaction between people and the usage of timber in the past time, and share this idea with the whole city. 東海大學建築系 Tunghai University Department of Architecture 侯咖享 作品集 Portfolio Hou Chia Heng

CONSTRUCTURAL STRATEGY

-ironware

+ironware

It istotally different between ancient carpentry and modern engineering wood. In othercountries, like Japan and the US, they usually take timbers as the main structure and pop up architecture ideas with wood frequency. Cross-laminatedtimber (CLT) (a sub-category of engineered wood) is a wood panel product madefrom gluing together layers of solid-sawn lumber, i.e., lumber cut from asingle log. Each layer of boards is usually oriented perpendicular to adjacent layers and glued on the wide faces of each board, usually in a symmetric way so that the outer layers have the same orientation. (wiki) Each modular prototype is combined with CLT and is 2m width and 12 lengths and combined each other in any direction and angle with special ironware. Besides those, we plan to take these modular systems as every element in the project and different combinations would create diverse functions.

STRUCTURE SYSTEM According to structural mechanics, we make sure every prototypes could be able to work like an arch structure system, that could hold and pass gravity to other prototypes and ground. With this structured strategy, we could design big sprocket space without any pillar and the modular assemble like in the cycle or even in a shield shape. In the end, they would be combined as an over 50m length and width dome and different layers are characteristic of tension and pressure those may make the building firmer and keep them from the threat of earthquakes, especially in Taiwan.

“How will we live together?” was asked by Hashim Sarkis at the 2021 Venice Biennale, and it has become a core principle. I endeavor to address this question through “cooperative construction for community and nature.” In ancient Japan, the skill of construction was considered as gifts from the gods; in order to memorialize this, the people have rebuilt and renewed the Ise Grand Shrine to transmit those skills every 20 years (called the “Shikinen Sengū”). At the same time, they have constructed the shrine with new materials to replace the old materials, with the spirit of respect of the builders; and the old materials are shared with other shrines to build deep spiritual connections among forests (nature), the shrines (places) and workers (community). Using that idea, I designed a flexible and reversible construction system which common people are able to operate and plan in spaces of diverse dimensions without professional tools and skills. I believe that tith that building system, people may build greater and more meaningful relationships with society and the environment when they collaborate with each other in the building process.

The first edition design in SPOSAD workshop

Through such collaboration, people can build significant interaction within communities and help each other toward their goals, while also building relationships and offering daily assistance. By physically participating in the building and using reusable materials, they may also understanding how important sustainability and environmental-friendly ideas are, making materials and construction a medium over which the spirit of environmentalism may be conveyed. And in addition to the sense of achievement and satisfaction when they participate in construction, they also learn basic construction skills and ways to improve their own lives at home. I hope that people will be able to build close interactions and memories with their community and spaces through“cooperative construction”. Moreover, the modular system I designed is reusable, flexible, and easy to operate and reuse for common people who may not have enough resources or sufficient training to fulfill spatial requirements, which is especially true for people in poor regions where they may have a lack of resources, or areas devastated by catastrophe. At the same time, we could reduce building wastes and depend less on unreasonable natural resource utilization

Common people could build spaces together safely and stably without professional skills while also making meaningful economic interactions for society with their spaces through the building process and emotional connections through feeling and memory. Furthermore, construction is neither an easy nor a clean process; so in a society in which the results of labor are divided and capital is both diluted and expropriated, the necessary daily efforts and feeling of accomplishment of the self and the group will give people a sense of happiness. And if this concept is magnified to nature as a whole

With reusable construction at the core, this modular system is not only able to be reused many times, but also is able to be operated for other flexible and spatial purposes with diverse assembly. In addition , the system uses prefabricated timber, so it is light and small compared to other construction materials and small in volume when taken apart, making it so people are able to deliver it and build with it easily .

Statement "These are the gods who have passed out of memory. Even their names are lost. The people who worshiped them are as forgotten as their gods. Their totems are long since broken and cast down. Their last priests died without passing on their secrets. "Gods die. And when they truly die they are unmourned and unremembered. Ideas are more difficult to kill than people, but they can be killed, in the end." -《American Gods》Neil Gaiman It is very indistinct to connect contemporary thoughts or life situations with realizations of local religions and divinity, but you can`t doubt the relationships between them which were responded to each other with symbols、objects、materials or activities. If the divinityor ideas of religions couldn`t satisf y imaginations or evolve in the contemporary, they have been crushed down and been abandoned by people who need redeemers with clear connections which have been decorated in current technology、ideas or imaginations of the famous.Accordingto my experiences and news, there are many conflicts and differences between traditional religions and a model society and ideas, and you could see unpleasure among people, those follow the ancient principles, when their beliefs face challenges and critique from the new spirit of the time. We may take the divinity and religions as a kind of spiritual and abstract conclusions of times which represent most of people`s understandings of society、 nature、 geo gr a p hy a nd his tor y thos e really influenced a lot at that time.In Jean Baudrillard`s 《Le système des objets》, we could find out some potentials those people worship technics or objects in now day because they are bringing great power and chancing visions of the world, and each older vision would be replaced by coming totems and idols.

Project Definition

SITE : Changhua Binhai Industrial Zone

Conceptual This architectural project is located on the coast of Changhua city where are usually changing geographical features a lot, because of constructions of infrastructures, and those events also have changed imaginations of geography and local spirit. In the recent, the government plan to construct coast wind turbines farms here, and the relationship would be evolved again, and so did the spirit of place. All I want to present may not be a temporar y installation to show my obser vations of the phenomenon in the site, but may build up a story about interactions and casual senses among the infrastructures、nature and people, and try to create a personal comprehensive view of this design essay, after those concepts were translated again and again. The new divinities or worship objects around the site : 1 . enormous machines: the wind turbine farms are going to be constructed here and change the environment to the local residents who used to make a living on fishing. The fishing grounds would be disappeared, that makes living situations and custom change a lot and theresidents would be forced to serve these infrastructures which will bring electric power to the others. It is contradictory that most environmentally friendly power plants would cause crashes of local lifestyles and are unusual things to the locals. 2 . wild wind: to the most of people`s experiments, the wind is tamed by constructional skill, and it couldn`t show real effects like in wilds, so people don`t usually understand powers of real and wild wind. In the fact, the wild wind is very powerful, so that itcan operate huge machines – wind turbines on the coast, and the engineers tried very hard to make sure wind wouldn`t destroy wind turbines, or they wouldn`t hold when the wind was out of control. The only thing that humans can do isn`t lookingfor an absolute way to control the wind, but keeping revering for this all-mighty being

3.translate or transform

At the firstexperiment, I tried to build an intuitive and sensible recognition of wind, and I imagined wind like a movement of an air cube. I invented a series of devices to shape personal imaginations of wind, and take the records as the basement of describing senses. Therefore, people would have tried to use similar objects and daily experiences to describe, and those imaginations may be very excessive. I think this process may work on observing geography details in this architectural thesis and be translated to a new concept of design.

Analysis 2 : Re-imagine

The second step, those records were translated into animated graphics with coding language (Java and grasshopper), and every result showed different characteristics of wind on the site, which reflected imaginative situations when the wind blows and crashes into the buildings in this region.

Analysis 3 : Interaction

Wind will play an important role in this area further, and I started to create extremely fragile structure models to look for the way how to interact with the wind. In normal considerations, it`s necessary to make building firm to resist the wild wind, but I make a choice that I take the wind as the main idea and make people`s lives on the wind, and so do the architectural activities. This design would be a long story talking about interaction among people、the wild wind、the coast and the infrastructures for 100 years.

The story starts from asymbol of resisting the coast wind – windproof forest, which protects theindustry park and their products from being rusty because of moist and salt thecoast wind.People tried to build a higher wall and planted more forests on it todefend the wind and made sure it wouldn`t break those infrastructures and their properties, just because people hadn`t found out any peaceful interactions with nature, but this idea had been grown up at that time.

In 2035, the windturbines farms had been built up as people`s predicts, and they started getting power from the wind and serving those infrastructures built on the coast. They used the wind power to operate the whole machines in the wall which was changed into offices of organizations of those wind-power industries. The local divinity filled full the entire infrastructures with electric power and changing of the local geography.

In 2050, the wild wind won`t be a threat to the local objects and become one of the concepts to construct architecture, and it would be possible to build the structure with the wind`s flow. In my imaginations, the people would build up a town and get used to living with effective from the wind, and inserted railway and stations resulting from the future institutions will be represented as the friendly relationship between artificial objects and the wild, nature and a new idol in this period.

In 210X, because the wind turbines will have been dismantled and the people may find out a new way to generate electricity, those infrastructures will have been abandoned like whatever had been built and replaced on this coast when they face generations changing.

NAGA Inter-Dialysis City

Inter-Dialysis City Designing Resilence in Asia

東海大學建築系 Tunghai University Department of Architecture 侯咖享 作品集 Portfolio Hou Chia Heng

Naga

CONCEPT & BACKGROUND

Urbanization and natural texture, Naga city 2018

Households without access to sanitary toilet facilities

Households without access to safe improved water source

Housing, Water and Sanitation Indicators by Barangay, Naga City 2011-2013

City, located in the Bicol Region, is targeted as the secondary developing area of urbanization in the Philippines. The east side of Naga City implied rich natural resources, including abundant hydrologies, forests, farmland, and Mt.Isarog.With the commercial prosperity, numerous residents flocked into the city, occupying the area in two different zones, urban and suburbs. Urban areas contain a high density of population,in addition leading to the unbalanced water distribution.Excessive population migration resulted in the shortage of land use, which simultaneously turned unaffordable under the expanding problem of population explosion. Therefore, the supply demand mismatch made Naga city, losing adaptability facing sudden natural hazard.losing adaptability facing sudden natural hazard. The unregulated areas were mostly without disaster response measures, moreover polluted the environment and persecuted human health both physically and mentally by exposing dangerous threats

In 2050, the total population of Naga City will grow from 200,000 to 500,000. Newly population will increase the housing and water demand, the residential areas will sprawl from the edge of the city, artificial pavements coverage original agricultural land and water sources on the east side. Densely populate (expansion) areas draw groundwater for daily water, which also causes stratum subsidence and salt seepage into groundwater. Households without access to safe improved water sources are serious problems during some Barangays. Currently, the drainage systems of Naga City straightly connect with natural water ways. Daily sewage discharge into rivers or drainage ditches, cause natural rivers being polluted, turning them into unusable water resources, and exacerbating river degradation.

Residential area development and relation cut between land and natural environment

Analysis Understanding Porous Area (Aim to the sites)Zone (Porous area)

Z o o m e d i n to t h e c o n t r a d i c to r y w a te r resource issue, prospective vision should be focused on the balance between environmental interaction and the urban sprawl of residential areas. By overlapping City roads and Rivers (2020) current natural and artificial context in Naga city, river basins fields and transport network, the midstream plot is selected as the plot towards the nature forefront. Porous areas stand as the potential districts which are fascinated with natural features, complete with basic infrastructure. Oriented between the urban periphery and the reserved natural area, the confluence of Naga River and Yabu river would be considered to maintain the disappearing hydrology Diviation between Land use plan(2030) and Natural network. Moreover, conserving the nature resource area could provide downstream flood control and settlement water use, further start a benign interaction between urban and suburbs.

Porous area between Urban area and Urban sprawl area

Settlements Observing the communities in Porous area, can categorize them into newly developed community and natural coexistence community. The first type consists of the same houses, enclosed by walls and had an entrance connected to the main road. The walls created the barrier of the public area and cut the continuity of natural texture. The second type was built by residents themselves. The main road is directly connected with public facilities. Commercial activities occurred on both sides of the road. The natural texture and the community interact in daily life. Residentials

Re s i d e n t i a l t y p e s a re m a i n l y s i n g l e buildings and low-rise buildings. The extended pavilions, seating areas, vestibule gardens, clothes yards, commercial... , are all important ancillary spaces, and appear at the entrance of the home as an intermediary that connects to the street. There will also be drainage ditches around the houses, but some Housing types and elements residents will extend the front space for activities and covered the drainage ditches

Strategy Three steps was the essential process to transform into an Inter-Dialysis City.Filtering was to leach in nature between borders; Distributing & Cycling was to allocate resources and connect circular systems; and Layering was to level up the space in hierarchy. Three belt systems would be visible as the actions, purging the obstacles between urban and suburbs, dredging the block in resource distribution and local living activities. Water activities constituted to the peri-urban area, Water activities constituted to the periurban area

Based on the research of settlement, developed a settlement prototype of the water system. Life interface combined with water system to reform activities, start from the urban-scale river bank to the public space of the community, and finally returns to residential units. Maximize the use of river water to replace the extraction of groundwater as domestic use, and reduce pollution caused by sewage discharged into the river. Arranging public areas to connect waterways and green belts. Make the water path the same as the public path. The activities of the public interface are connected to the water.

Water network built up the whole area with re-linking current social facilities and infrastructure, which filtered the sewage water from the uplands dialysis with the Naga river, and then re-distributed to lowlands. For example, we showed a belt as the demonstration, layouting the sections in order of different interfaces with community, nature and in-between.

Viewing further away, when the riverbank area would once flooded, the inner district would get the water by direct runoff.

In the riverbank district, water would be collected from the storage Pond, and filtered through the sewage treatment and wetland.

Community-Dialysis focused on the water resource reusing cycle, then the collecting water would be transported to the other cycle

The ditches would be drained into the household area, providing resources for new water activities.

From the community plan, the households were having more accessibilities to get touch with water activities. Street layout and the household location were also considered to follow the interaction principle in three layered relationships.

Finally the water drainage would flow back through the riverbank area, processing the water inter-dialysis in nature, and flow into the ditches to the sewage treatments in horizontal ways.

From the roadside to the courtyard, the composed housing would be leveled by sharing in the ground floor, second in the level, and last in the middle courtyard. Water network and transport accessibility were also layered in different types.

It makes me think about my school , Tunghai university also covered by the long walls . The relationship between campus and citizen are different The idea comes from the words said by Cicero : if you have a garden and a library ,you have everything you need .One is social place ,and the other one is personal place

The campus is one part of the city , and the citizens could be a part of the campus
