Building community Over the last 18 months Club Taree has grown as an organisation. We have put a great deal of time and effort into building our culture, which improves the job satisfaction of our employees, and also the overall experience for our members. A wonderful example of how the culture of Club Taree has changed is the engagement of our team in the Club Taree Community Team initiative. Back in May the Executive Leadership Team made a commitment to build and develop the Club Taree Community Team, which would be an outlet for our team to offer help and assistance to the community. As this publication goes to print, over the last 6 months, 12 events, 250 hours every single commitment from an employee has been done out of their own time, simply because they value the culture of Club Taree, and value the community of which we are a part. We are so proud of our teams

1

community focus, their engagement with our partners and of course the fact that they choose to work for us. It is important that every Club determines its mandate or vision, mission/purpose and values. Creating these documents is essential as they provide the club with a sense of identity and provide definition and limits as well as outlining goals. They can help evaluate and affirm a clubs ongoing direction and evolution. Setting out a vision, mission, and values provides exceptional guidance when making decisions within a Club, and they also act as an important risk management strategy having them available and shared among members. Having members aware of their Clubs vision, mission, and values, members are more likely to support these statements and align their efforts to fulfill the mission. Once these founding documents are created

it is essential to communicate these policies and make them available for all members and public to view. As part of Club Taree’s journey over the last 18 months, we have placed exceptional value on the creation of core beliefs and business guidelines. Our values describe what we believe matters most, they help define our priorities and unite our team for a common purpose. Just like any key organisations, Club Taree has spent valuable time cementing our Vision, Mission and Values.

The President’s welcome Welcome to edition 5 of CT Connect, the Club Taree Community Magazine. In previous CT magazines I mentioned the need for our Clubs to have a plan for our future. Since then the Board of Directors, CEO, and Management have produced a Master Plan. This plan is linked with the strategic and business plans and gives our Club a clear and concise plan to follow into the future. Naturally for many reasons, the timeline will need to be flexible enough to be changed to suit our business situations, at any point in time. You will notice in this edition we have featured a representation of this master plan. Our Vision, Mission and Values are our key set of regulations that we have set for our Club, as explained in the previous pages of this edition. Our community support continues, with a continued sponsorship of the Taree and District Netball Association into 2016. We established a relationship with this association in 2015, and are proud of how they have upheld their core values, and engaged with Club Taree to form a strong alliance. I am also very pleased to announce that Club Taree will be naming rights event sponsor for this year’s New Year’s Eve festivities on the river bank, “Fireworks on the Foreshore” , a great night will be had by all, including the fireworks, stalls, vendors and community atmosphere. We feel that this is a fantastic community event, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to help the whole community bring in 2016. As summer is on the doorstep, keep your eye out for our Community team, they will be busy at the beaches and other community functions, and

3

presenting acts of kindness over the festive season and into the New Year. We are very proud of our new Craft Shop, no not that sort of craft, this is the new craft beer and cider outlet, (well it was new for me) that we have introduced into Dineon19, I must admit I like a cold one on a hot day, however I did not know how big Craft Beers have become, and the huge range of beers that are available, Our Craft Beer Ambassadors Nicola Emoe, Andrew Darlington and Mandy Dunn are our experts and will be more than happy to explain the great range of both draft and bottled craft beer for you. So next time you are dining make a point of trying our great range of different beers, they have a taste for everyone. Speaking of Dineon19, our dedicated Chefs are continuing their passion for food, and are delighted with the release our all new fresh and inspiring Summer Menu. Additionally we have opened our Dineon19 Chef’s Table, catering for social and corporate events in a fully serviced private dining room, the Chef’s Table caters for up to 18 people in excellent surroundings with all the necessities, bookings are essential, our teams will be happy to help. If you have any questions on any of these topics please don’t hesitate to ask myself or any Director, who will be happy to assist. I look forward to catching up with you when you next visit your Club. Kind Regards Carl Guy President.

From the CEO’s desk Today we are proud and pleased to advise the thousands of Members and the greater Manning Valley community that we now have a broad plan and/or template. Leading hospitality, health care and education design and construction team, Paynter Dixon were engaged to guide, assist and more importantly listen to the collective professional experiences of the Clubs Board of Directors. Industry proven trends with sound financial returns were assessed with a balanced multi-use, multi-functional design without limiting the overall businesses growth or development. Future revenue diversification was a significant principal “driver” with a clear focus to decrease the industries collective gaming dependency. (Not to just plan or build function rooms and auditoriums) “The pictured template” at this stage is conceptual only and fluid in its

embryonic form. Change may or may not occur? However it is a base in which we are very proud to present. In many cases, Building Master plans become the “Populist Plans” which satisfy noisy minority groups or small sub-sections of a limited Membership type, however the unanimous Board of Club Taree are pleased stand together in support this future planning initiative and its foundation in the best interest its entire Membership and more importantly the greater Taree community. The task now for myself (the CEO) is to investigate all possible financial modelling options for the Boards consideration inclusive of timelines and subsequent return on investment. This is not the time, nor will it be our

intent to micro-manage where the snooker tables may or may not go, or how long will the 18th hole may be, or question the location of the display cabinets. This is the time to acknowledge that failing to “plan” is planning to “fail”. Club Taree’s Mission Statement is; Maintain a financially viable community hub that meets the needs of sport, culture, commemoration, hospitality and entertainment through the provision of high quality services. As we progress Mr Carl Guy the Clubs President will endeavour to update all stakeholders accordingly. Thank you J Manning CEO

$52,000 spend on enhancing the quality of one of our greatest assets - the golf course Club Taree faces many issues with the elements on a day to day basis, here Mark Spraggs, our Course Superintendent outlines one of the many projects carried out, that not many people get to see. At a total cost of $52,830 this is a significant investment into the course, which aims to enhance the game of golf for our members and visitors. Mark has spent a great deal of time, effort and energy into researching, liaising on and managing this project along with the greens tea. We look forward to this project being completed in the near future, so that our members can appreciate the significance of this project, and in turn we can continue to provide a first class golf course year round. Here at Club Taree we have been fortunate with having a large dam to help irrigate our beautiful Golf Course, however what we have found in the past couple of summers is that the temperatures are rising and the days seem to be getting longer and our dam which holds at maximum capacity 40 mega litres wasn’t getting us through

5

the tough dry summers we have been experiencing due to little or no real rainfall to continually be topping the dam up. We went down the track in 2014 to find an alternative water source and fortunately enough we got lucky. Through 24 hour pump tests and Hydrology reports, for this bore to have continuous water we can run a pump that can give us steady flow of 2ltrs/second. What we are going to do with this is run it through solar so there are no power costs or labour costs associated with running the bore daily and it will pump down to a rock drain on the 7th and 8th holes and be constantly feeding the dam whenever it is not full. We had the water tested during the 24 hour pump test and found that it was very high in salinity, sodium and alkalinity therefore before doing anything we had to find a desalination/ magnifying unit that could combat these issues before they became problems with the turf on the golf course.

I spoke to companies all across Australia and in the end a company called DeltaWater Solutions out of Newcastle, NSW had a machine that would combat all problems in the bore water and if the dam were 100% bore water it would still control the problems before being pumped out onto the course. This has taken some time to get all the data but now that the bore has been approved through the NSW office of water and turned into a production bore we can look to have this whole system in operation by early 2016.

$80,000 spent on securing future revenue alternatives. Five years ago Club Taree unveiled plans for a motel, while construction hasn’t started, you can see from the masterplan featured on the previous page, the motel project is still a part of our future development plans. Here we receive an update from Club President Carl Guy; I have been asked on several occasions “what is happening with the Motel project”. As it has not been mentioned for some time. The Motel plan has not been abandoned, the following up date will explain the current, and future of this project. As you may be aware the Development Application (DA) had a “use by” date on it, which expired earlier this year, In order to keep this valuable project alive we were required by Council to have, what they call, a substantive start on the project prior to the DA expiring . The Board discussed this project, at length, and decided that the potential of this project was too valuable for us, to allow it to die. This will be a very big financial source of income for our Club, in the future, and this great opportunity could not be lost. We therefore engaged Paynter Dixon to do what was necessary to secure

this project for our Clubs future. They produced the required construction certificate to Council, who subsequently approved the plan, subject to us commencing number or footings and bucket piers. Paynter Dixon carried out the necessary work and then filled in the holes, and replaced the grass. This action by the Board has now secured the Motel Project for all perpetuity. This project was a significant investment for the long term sustainability of Club Taree, and will in the future secure alternative revenue sourced for Club Taree. To date the investment in this project has been significant, and is to the value in excess of $230,000. The Board decision was the right decision for our Clubs Future, we now have this project secured, and construction can be commenced when we are in a financial position to support it. The money we expended to carry out the above process, is not wasted it, should be seen as an investment in our future. If you have any questions on this or any other project please don’t hesitate to speak to me about it.

Social m Today, there is every chance that social media has a direct effect on you. You may not know it, perhaps you do. Social media is definitely a hot topic, is it really that social, is it dangerous, is it worthwhile, does it destroy relationships, or is it the best “invention” of modern time? If you’re not wrapped up in the world of social media, you are in the minority, you may also think that your not – but remember that photo your grandson took of you wearing that funny hat – well you can guarantee that that image has been shared, liked, followed, pinned, unliked, reviewed, hash-tagged and perhaps even picked up by some television station for use on a slow news day, it is however also certain that that one photo will be still available on the internet long after you are gone. You would have to be living under a rock not to have recognised the growth of social media in the last 18 years. Immediately we see that you are questioning, “has it really been that long”? Well it has. It all started back in 1997 with the launch of the “Six Degrees” platform, which was essentially based on the famous six degrees of separation theory. From here social media grew quite quickly to include instant messaging online and blogging. By the year 2000 there were 100 million internet users worldwide, and so grow the need to communicate. In 2003 MySpace create the first network platform, allowing you to share your interests, ideas, music, likes and dislikes, it was massive at the time, but its popularity soon crashed with the launch of the modern leaders, Facebook and twitter. At the time of launch, we wonder did Mark Zuckerberg 7

actually consider that his little program would today be the number one online connection platform, and have more than 1 billion users worldwide? Twitter follows second with 500 million users, and is cemented in its rigid 140 character statements, known as “tweets”. The next phase of social media platforms catered for those who wanted to share experiences and thoughts through photographs. Flickr was perhaps the first, however Instagram is now the front runner in popularity. It is perhaps hard for some to know but today social media consists of thousands of different online platforms. No matter what you personally think, social media is good, bad and sometimes ugly. If you look around you will notice that nearly everyone

is staring at the phones, we are so connected these days, we are so contactable, we are so openly sharing everything we do (thank goodness I know that you are heading off to the gym!!!), and we are communicating with people more than ever. The question then gets asked is there more benefit in communicating via a faceless phone, or engaging face to face or goodness forbid by actually using a phone the old fashioned way. We are more connected but less engaged.

Is it dangerous? We have all seen the general interest stories where people have “reconnected” with people they haven’t seen nor heard of in 50 years, people are finding long lost relatives, old flames and then on the other side some others who they would rather

Social media at Club Taree Here at Club Taree we love social media, Why? Because our members love social media. It forms a massive part of what we do every day. It’s an effective engagement tool, a great platform for advertising and also a great resource for building our products and services. Club Taree’s preferred platforms are Facebook and Instagram. We find that our members love keeping up to date with us through this form of communication, it forms a great deal of what we do and how we do it.

media forget. Really let’s face it, who hasn’t “Facebook stalked” someone, where are they, what did they become, did they marry? Sometimes we are surprised, sometimes we are not, sometimes we judge sometimes we don’t. You cannot fault the fact that social media is great for “connecting” and “reconnecting”. We use social media to keep up to date with our favourite products and services, our favourite actors, tv shows and our favourite club. It is without a doubt a valuable tool in today’s modern world. It is a modern trend that is reinvigorating old trends through sharing, engagement and display. Social media also has another side. Recent surveys have shown that people in the last five years have started to display more jealousy traits. It’s easy when you consider that we are exposed to more and more of others’ lives on a daily basis. The fact that you get a running photo gallery on a friends trip to New York, or their brand of new designer handbag is snapped and uploaded instantly, a new home is up for all to see, or the lack of a party invite hits much harder when the party is streamed live through a series of

We have been using Facebook to engage with our community (and the world) since 2007 and we use it every day, whether it be to receive reviews, engage with members, promote an event, spread the word about community news or promote the great work of our team. We currently have over 2200 “likers” on Facebook, making us the most engaging club in the region. If you are not a liker, we would love to have you, we often run competitions and Facebook only offers through this platform, and some of them I have to say are very very rewarding. Our LOVE of Instagram has only recently developed. But now we are addicted to the “#”. Instagram is such a visual media and allows us to express the values of Club Taree through beautiful photographs. We love sharing our stories through this amazing platform, be sure to check us out, and don’t forget to follow #clubtaree. We share some of our most beautiful and interesting stories through this platform.

immediate posts and photos. It can be pretty confronting if you’re sitting at home by yourself eating baked beans and watching re runs of Prisoner. Social media has also changed the way restaurants operate. Restaurants now advertised that they are “Instagram friendly”, meaning that they have lots of interesting vistas, concepts, food items and beverage options which look great on Instagram. It is also deciding what in not on menus. Study results were released early this year on “Australia’s least friendly Instagram menu items”. Number one on that list was the humble menu staple, Chicken Parmigiana, instantly this the old Chicken Parmy was ripped from menus Australia wide because restaurants knew that simply this menu item would never be photographed by their diners. Imagine, a menu based on what diners will display photos of on social media – but this is the world in which we live – everything has a hashtag (#). It could be considered scary when you look at statistics released in 2014 show that the average Australian uses their phone 6.7 hours per day, 9 million Australians use Facebook every day

and of those 54% check or update their social media between one and 20 times per day. Businesses have recognised that the use of social media platforms to promote their goods and services and to also engage with their clients, or potential clients is necessary. Many companies employ trained social media experts to operate their social media platforms, in order to maximise their exposure, profits and engagement. We can be certain though that social media is here to stay. We are always going to know what people are doing, whats on their mind, who they are with and where they are. Will you stay up to date, or will you enjoy a life without the interference or engagement of social media, either way, its your choice, we do however suggest that either be positive for you and the people around you. Remember to engage with real people, in real time, for balance and perspective.

Social media is good, bad and sometimes ugly 8

Elf on the Shelf Those who already follow us on social media know that we love to use this form of media to engage with you and also to give away some fabulous prizes. December is no different as we launch our Elf on the Shelf promotion. We are expecting the arrival of “CT” (our aptly named little elf friend) on Tuesday 1st December. We are not sure how he will arrive, and exactly when he will arrive, all we know is he will be here to help keep a close eye on the festivities of Christmas here at Club Taree. Along with him he will bring a bag of giveaways, promotions and chances to win – all in the name of a little fun. To be a part of this all you need to do is like

us on Facebook or follow us on Instagram for your chance to win. Everyday CT will get into some mischief, rustle up some prizes and generally create some Christmas Cheer around Club Taree. #clubtareefestivalofchristmas #cttheclubtareeelf

Remember – to be part of this you MUST follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Traditionally the Elf on the Shelf arrives in the lead up to Christmas to help Santa keep an eye on all the boys and girls across the world. Each night the adopted “elf” returns to the North Pole to report to Santa the happenings of the day. Elf is always back into the family home before the kids wake up, usually hidden, but always in a different place so the kids can try and trick him/her down. Elf on the Shelf is a fun, novel way to build up to the festivities of Christmas Day.

Reminder to members Your accrued 2015 membership points will expire on 31st December. Don’t forget to use your points prior to this deadline to maximise the benefits of being a member of Club Taree.

We love making desserts at Club Taree, and we are often asked for recipes, and ideas on making desserts at home. Our famous almond and orange syrup cake is one of our most requested recipes. When we do feature it at CafĂŠ Connect we often sell out in minutes (literally). Our team is now accustomed to making 3 or 4 at a time, just to make sure no one misses out. Try this at home, oranges are in season, perfectly priced and often just hanging over the neighbours fence just asking to be made into this delicious cake.

Ingredients 2 oranges washed 125gr butter 1 cup (220gr) caster sugar 5 eggs 2 cups (240gr) almond meal ½ cup (75gr) self-raising flour, sifted 2 tablespoons orange juice 1 1/3 cups (330ml) water

Almond and Orange Syrup Cake

Method Preheat oven to 180*c (350*f). Line the base of a 22cm cake tin with non-stick baking paper. Place the oranges in a saucepan of water, cover and simmer for 10mins or until soft. Remove from water and chop roughly, removing any seeds. Process the orange, butter, sugar, eggs, ground almonds, flour and baking powder in a food processor until smooth. Spoon the mixture into the tin and bake for one hour or until cooked when tested with a skewer. To make the orange syrup, place the sugar, orange juice and water in a saucepan over medium heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

To serve Cut the warm cake into wedges and spoon over some of the syrup. Serve with thick cream. Serves 8-10

Beer ambassador Nicola Emoe.

Club Taree is well known for its early uptake of industry trends, we are proud to be a local, regional and state leader in the provision of genuine hospitality within the club sector. In August club Taree was proud to launch THE CRAFT SHOP, Taree’s go to bar for the thousands of Craft Beer lovers, while also enticing those who have not converted, but soon will to this engaging and hard to resist market trend. Lead by a team of dedicated Beer Ambassadors, who help cement Club Taree’s commitment to personalised, and professional 6 star service.

We are delighted to introduce “The Craft Club”. Launching on the 1st November, The Craft Club will be the key to maximising your engagement with The Craft Shop’s team of passionate and engaging Beer Ambassadors.

Nicola, How have local craft beer lovers reacted to the launch of The Craft Shop? It is quite interesting how quickly word gets out there. Our members have certainly embraced the concept, they love the engagement from our Beer Ambassadors, and have now become ambassadors in their own rights getting the word out of our new outlet. In the short time since our launch we have drawn in new members to Club Taree. Local craft beer lovers are literally singing our praises for meeting the gap in this passionate and eclectic market.

Membership is $20, but that’s a small price to pay for what will promise to be a truly valuable membership. Just for joining we will give you: • A complimentary “Welcome to the Club” tap beer. • A 100% authentic “The Craft Shop” Trucker Cap. • A Monthly email from our Beer Ambassadors, engaging on all ‘things’ Craft Beer. • Members only specials and discounts. • Members only tasting nights and events. • A 100% original The Craft Shop t-shirt (first 20 members only). • Membership forms are available at reception or THE CRAFT SHOP.

products that I have a passion for in an industry that is flourishing. Everything about craft beers appeals to me from the stories behind the breweries and their wonderful beers, to the beautifully designed labels with quirky names and graphics and of course the variety of styles and flavours that can be found. I look forward to further developing the Craft Shop by introducing alternative products to our range and developing closer links with our loyal customers with the development of “The Craft Club” where we hope to hold special dinners, training courses and beer appreciation evenings.

What’s the best “introductory “craft beer style? For those who have never tried craft beer I would suggest trying a “golden ale” or a “summer ale.” As the name suggests they are golden coloured or in the case of summer ales, a lighter shade of yellow. They are sometimes referred to as “gateway beers” as they offer a gentle move away from generic lagers.

What is the best thing about working in the Craft Shop?

How much does your beer drinking change with the seasons?

It’s is fresh and exciting. I’m working with a great team who are keen to learn more and assist in the sale of craft beers, enhancing the dining experience at our restaurant “Dineon19.” The atmosphere is friendly and inviting and I am selling

My flavour and taste appreciations change with the seasons. Springtime with its vibrancy of colour and freshness entices me into drinking beers with a light golden colour, with floral and

citrusy aromas and flavours. These lighter and crisper beers are lower in malt and spice flavours. They link with the change of food for spring, ideal pairings with salads, fresh fish and vegetables. Autumn brings a change in colours, the leaves of some of our trees turning reddish brown like the brown ales with their toffee and caramel flavours. These brown ales, dark ales and porters match beautifully with barbequed and smoked meat dishes, roasts and nut based deserts. The colder it gets, the more I crave the darker and more full bodied stouts with their smooth and full mouth feel with flavours from rich chocolate and molasses to coffee and vanilla. These darker full bodied stouts are thick and warming, matching with the warmth of comfort foods, of lamb shanks with mash, beef casserole and rich deserts such as a top quality Belgian dark chocolate mud cake.

What is your favourite food match with beer? I love spicy Asian dishes, my favourite being Tom Yam Goong, a flavourful Asian soup with prawns. It matches beautifully with Black Duck’s, Golden Goose, American Pale Ale. Another favourite is salt and pepper calamari with a fresh dry Mountain Goat Summer Ale. Two Birds Sunset ale pairs beautifully with a roasted beetroot, goats cheese and walnut salad. My desert of choice would be tiramisu with the Little Brewing Company’s porter.

As part of our annual membership renewal program Club Taree ran an incentive to reward members and the community for valuing their membership with Club Taree and renewing during the promotion period. The promotion saw $10,000 up for grabs, a possible $5000 for one lucky member, and another $5000 for their charity, organisation, community group, sporting club or association of choice. Unfortunately the member drawn out was not present, but was delighted that her selection charity was going to be $5000 better off thanks to her nomination. The charity of choice was Taree North Rotary Club. Club Taree

Membership Renewal Promotion was delighted to present a cheque to representatives of the Club on behalf of Mrs. Griffith. The $5000 will be put to good use through one of the many local community projects undertaken by Taree North Rotary. Congratulations, and thanks to everyone who embraced the promotion, and applauded us for giving back to the community.

Tour De Taree During July the Club Taree Community Team took part in the le Tour de Taree. Club Taree’s tribute to the Tour de France, the event saw 34 of our team members collectively ride 3344km to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW. Club Taree President Carl Guy was delighted to present a cheque to Rhiannon from Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW for $17 556.15. The total funds raised includes a one off donation from Club Taree of $10,000. President Carl Guy said “This was a wonderful event, our team really got behind it and we are so proud of how they participated. The team rode on their own time, committing to 156 hours of riding time. Club Taree thought it was appropriate to thanks them for their efforts through this donation of $10,000 to the total. Obviously we know of the good work of Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW achieves through their accommodation, retreats and programs, we have learnt about just how many local families use their wonderful facilities during challenging

times. Club Taree is very proud to have been able to supply a platform for fundraising and awareness of the great work Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW does”. The remaining funds were raised through donations, sponsorship, raffles and support from some internal clubs. Club Taree would like to thank their members for their support of the le Tour de Taree. While initially there was no intention to have a “winner”, it was however decided that kitchen team member Dylan McCormack should be awarded the yellow winners jersey, medallion and prize as the most active participant riding in excess of 700km as an individual. Thanks Dylan.

“In 2015 Club Taree community donations totalled $171,989.79” 13

Manning Valley BMX In August Club Taree was delighted to hand over a sponsorship cheque of $1000 to Manning Valley BMX to help out with hosting the state finals on the 23rd August. Over 800 people engaged in this event, congratulations to all involved for showcasing similar values to our through this exceptional community event.

Jeans for Genes Club Taree acknowledged Jeans for Genes day by having our team members dress casually in their jeans to raise awareness and funds for this valuable charity. Together with a $100 donation from Club Taree Dance Club we raised $145.50.

Park run Recently the Club Taree Community Team gave up their Saturday morning to head on down to Taree parkrun. Each week volunteers give up their own time to head down to this great community event to marshal, time keep, coordinate, and cheer on the ever growing crowds who participate in the weekly run/ jog/ walk We managed to get 22 of our team members down there on the morning, some who took on official roles, others who walked the event, others handed out Club Taree water, and drink bottles, while others acted as an impromptu cheer squad complete with Club Taree “Clappers”. Club Taree is proud to have supplied the funding to help get his event up and running, and are so delighted that so many community member place value on this awesome weekly event. Parkrun started as a dream for two like-minded women who had ironically not met, both contacted parkrun head office within weeks of each other to see how to start up an official parkrun event in Taree. Marg Lewis and Janelle Jeffries put a great deal of time and effort into getting this fantastic community event up and “running”, and for that we thank them. Here we catch up with Marg.

Marg, Tell us what is Taree parkrun? Parkrun is a free weekly timed 5km run. Having said that, you don’t have to run, you can walk. It’s held at 8am every Saturday morning. It’s not a race, rather it is you trying to improve tour

pace each time you participate. It’s open to everyone, free (as I mentioned), its safe and really easy to take part. It is run by volunteers, the people who participate commit to volunteer at least 3 times per year. All you need to do is register, print out the unique barcode you receive when you register and then bring it along. It’s that easy.

Where is it held, and why was that location chosen? What could be better than a Saturday morning walk or run along the glorious Manning River? Such a beautiful river that really glistens in the early morning sun. It starts and finishes at Endeavour Place reserve, just behind KFC. There is plenty of parking available in the car park at the Rowing Club. The course goes from Endeavour Place reserve, turn around point under Martin Bridge then back, twice (so 2 laps) and uses the excellent pathway along the river’s edge, participants are continually commenting on how beautiful it is.

running or walking with their dog. Mum’s and Dad’s pushing prams and strollers, kids as young as 5, people who are in their 80’s … parkrun is for everyone. It’s all about community. It’s totally inclusive, any ability and any age. Everyone is happy, encourage and support each other no matter how fast or not, people are. Families have commented that it is the first activity they have found where they can all participate as a family. People who live with a disability have commented how they feel equal to everyone else.

Any last words? Taree parkrun is a community activity which has created a new community to encourage an active community. Club Taree is a big part of and a strong supporter of this new community and we are so pleased to have them on board as a partner. Participate numbers are increasing. engaging with our members and guests. The current plan includes visits to Crowdy Head, Harrington, Forster, Tuncurry, Old Bar, Saltwater, and Wingham and everywhere in between. Keep an eye out for us because we will have a bucket load of giveaways to help enhance your summer experience, from bottled water, to sunscreen, to Frisbees and much much more.

The Club Taree Community Team is always available to offer support and assistance within the community, no matter what the role we will most likely be able to help, so if you are looking for a volunteer, a team or some community assistance please contact our Brand and Communications Manager, Paul Allan on 0265394000 or email him on pallan@clubtaree.com.au

Fireworks on the foreshore

It’s one of the largest annual celebrations in the world, but there’s nowhere in the world we’d rather be than alongside our local community at this year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, to be held along the Manning River Foreshore. As major sponsor, we recognise the importance of New Year’s Eve to our community. It’s a night for everyone to come together and celebrate our achievements over the past year, and to share the excitement and hopes for the year ahead. And Taree’s riverside fireworks have become a tradition for local families, attracting crowds of over 5,000; the night is a great reflection of the ongoing strength and unity of our community.

This year’s event will kick-off at 5pm, with plenty of fun-filled action along the foreshore. Make sure to arrive early, claim the perfect vantage point, and grab some food before the live entertainment starts at 6pm. A great line-up of local artists will have you rocking the riverfront, there’s plenty in store for the kids, and the night culminates is a spectacular fireworks display over the water at 9pm.

And while we’re keeping the details quiet for now, all will be revealed as we start the countdown to year-end. We look forward to seeing you on the Manning River Foreshore this New Year’s Eve – together we’ll make it a date to remember! This is a Greater Taree City Council family-friendly and alcohol free event.

Community hub Earlier in this publication, you would have read our Mission Statement. We aim to be a “Community Hub”, through the provision of goods, services, and support. Club Taree has a long and proud history, both in its current form as Club Taree, and previously as both Taree RSL and Taree Golf Club of providing support to the community. The “club grants” year finishes in August, and we are delighted to show that our total community donations in 2015 was $171,989.79. We are extremely proud to have been able to put such a large amount of support back into the community, and it is worth a note that this figure is $95,325.42 above what we are legally obligated to provide to the community. Club Taree proudly sponsors many sporting organisations within the region outside the realms of golf. In the last 12 months, Club Taree has sponsored many local great sporting associations, teams and events to a value in excess of $30,000; • • • • •

Community focus February “Keep an eye out for the Club Taree Community Team” We are proud to have been able to help so many charities, organisations, associations, schools, community groups, projects and not for profits throughout the Club Grants year. The Club Taree team has decided to make February 2016 our community month, whereby we will release some of our sponsorships, and scholarships as well as various other levels of support to the community. As a coincidence, February is the official “Month of Kindness” and also features the officially named “Random Acts of Kindness Week” from the 14th – 20th of February. However Club Taree wishes to extend acts of kindness over the whole month of February. Since the Club Taree Community Team was developed and launched in May, the team has been very prevalent in the community, helping out at various events, lending a hand and offering general support. This is where the true sense of community comes into play. We need your help. Do you know someone who

needs a hand, someone that could do with a smile, someone that needs a little support, someone who has no one else, or someone that just deserves something nice? We are busy getting a list together, so whether you know someone who needs their lawn mown, or garden tendered, or that needs some windows washed, or someone who deserves a visit with a surprise gift, or someone who deserves a night out. Do you know a group that needs a little support, or some helping hands, do you know a school that needs a fence painted, or some new supplies? The club Taree Community Team is hoping to make a real difference through small random acts of kindness. The list of possibilities in endless, however we are only a small team compared to the greater community. We ask during February that all our

members also try to offer a random act of kindness to someone you know, or even someone you don’t know. After all its part of what being in a community is all about. Any suggestions or requests for random acts of kindness should be addressed to our Brand and Communications Manager Paul Allan, ideally via email or post, pallan@clubtaree.com.au or PO Box 40 Taree NSW 2430. If you have any project ideas or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact Paul.

Since the commencement of our Club Taree Red 25 Team with the Red Cross Blood Service we have all contributed to saving 48 lives. Thank You Team.

High Tea? Many of us imagine that the tradition of High Tea was started by the upper class somewhere in England. High Tea has many forms, whether it be traditional or not. High Tea in any form is the perfect opportunity to enjoy ones company over a satisfying cup of tea. The concept of “Afternoon Tea” was introduced into upper class England as a bridge between lunch and the evening meal, which usually wasn’t taken until after 8pm. Afternoon Tea soon became a mini meal in itself. This was all well and good for the upper class, but the working class had a different schedule and a different budget. At the time tea was quite expensive and couldn’t be justified as a necessity by the hardworking lower classes. As such a tired and wearied factory worker would arrive home at 6pm famished, thus in the industrial areas of the UK, the working classes evening meal evolved; high tea. The traditional English High Tea usually involved a mug of tea, bread, vegetables, cheese and occasionally meat. Variations on high tea could include the addition of pies, potatoes and crackers. So while Afternoon Tea was largely a social event for their upper class counterparts, high tea was a necessary meal in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This traditional high tea still exists for some parts of the North and Scotland. Imagine heading out to a “Traditional High Tea” here in Australia and being served potato. Our vision of high tea is not the traditional, but rather the higher class adaptation of the “taking of tea”. Ironically also our vision of taking High Tea is often in a lounge setting. This is

how we serve it here at Club Taree. Our members lounge is the perfect host venue, however the exact definition of High Tea refers to where the tea is taken. The only known reason for the name ‘High Tea’ refers to the fact that it was eaten at a table, whereas afternoon tea was taken seated in low comfortable chairs and sofas. High Tea also traditionally was taken somewhere between four and six in the evening in preparation for the main meal. High Tea became popular among the upper classes as it was a meal that could be eaten while their servants were away or not available. The upper class version was a combination of afternoon and high tea and involved the addition of meat, salmon and fruit. In modern day England afternoon tea is referred to as High Tea. These days in England the taking of High Tea is perhaps fading among their own, however is as popular as ever with tourists. London’s most prestigious hotels report figures of up to 75% of attendees at High Tea are tourists. Here at Club Taree we mix modern, with traditional, with upper and lower class. We serve our ‘High Tea’ in the members lounge, seated on low comfortable sofas and armchairs. The menu changes monthly and is based on the modern assumed take on ‘High Tea’ (no potato!). Our verandah is also popular for attendees.

First Saturday of each month The current format sees High Tea offered on the first Saturday of each month from 2.30pm until 4.30pm. It is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a ‘classy catch up’, celebrate life’s special events or simply treat yourself and a friend. The events have been popular with mothers groups, children’s birthday parties, wedding anniversaries, baby showers, corporate get togethers, social committees, and of course our members and their guests. Some attendees make an event of it, dressing up to enjoy the atmosphere, while others enjoy a more casual event. Our High Teas have been popular with most events being a “sell out”. We advise you book early to avoid disappointment. We are hosting two events in December to help our members and guests celebrate Christmas with their friends and family, perhaps the perfect alternative to lunch or dinner, scheduled for the 5th and the 19th of December these events are both sure to be sell out events. High Tea will return in 2016 on the 6th February.

Fit tips Some of our team here at Club Taree have started their own fitness and lifestyle journeys, so we thought why not help inspire our members to perhaps be lifestyle wise, offering some tips, or hints to becoming happier and healthier. Each publication we will present a different take on health, fitness and wellbeing. think, especially if you make activity part of your daily routine. The amount of activity you need to do each week depends on your age and physical health. Sometimes incorporating one group fitness class, personal training session or a golfing session per week or setting an alarm to walk the dog or attend the gym can be enough to kick start a revolution. Sarah Kesby from Anytime Fitness Taree, a Personal trainer and club manager, Sarah’s interest are centered on health and wellbeing, helping people to achieve their goals. Providing a range of informative tips to help people take a step toward better health. There are many ways busy mums and dads, families, young people, office workers and older adults can build physical activity into their lives. Being physically active is easier than you

21

The most important factor is making choices that are sustainable and setting goals that are attainable. If you can do those two things well the rest will come easily. Take a moment to think about what you really want, what your current state of health is and what you would like to improve. Don’t wait until new years to make a resolution. Start today. Kick start your journey and no matter what you decide, don’t hesitate. You are best to strike while the iron is hot, so to speak.

Diet is by far one of the most difficult factors for people to fathom when it comes to losing weight. I want people to understand that small changes are better than too much all at once. Start by simply reading the labels in your weekly groceries and finding out how much sugar is in the foods you buy. Then you can progress into shopping the perimeter of your grocery store focusing on fresh fruits and veg and lean meats. Try to increase the amount of foods you make at home, however it is very important to make sure you continue to treat yourself. Go out for dinner with the family or occasionally, after a really good week, buy yourself you favourite treat.

Don’t forget that Anytime Fitness have a great range of membership options. Mention you are from Club Taree to get the best rate possible.

Myth 1 Crunches can get rid of stubborn tummy fat… Well the truth of the matter is that spot reduction for any area has no scientific backing for its effectiveness so be really wary of the equipment that is marketed to target susceptible people in this way because the fact of the matter is that abs are primarily made in the kitchen., this essentially means that the greater percentage of your efforts when it comes to weight loss will need to be the consideration and subsequent alteration of your current lifestyle, this will mean altering your diet in some way, and increasing your activity level by incorporating regular exercise. So no crunches won’t help with that specific desire to flatten your abdominal area, however you absolutely can change it for yourself, with hard work & good nutrition and a good support network like the team we have to help you at Anytime fitness.

Fitness myths dispelled Myth 2 Myth 4 Lifting will make women I can’t lose weight bulky This is often the most troubling phrase As a personal trainer I’ll argue that women should know it is very difficult to become bulky without additional testosterone supplementation and specific hypertrophy and diet configurations. There are so many benefits for women who lift weights: daily activities such as picking up your kids, carrying groceries or even just getting through your daily grind at work will become easier. You are even less likely to have injuries in the long run with the added strength. Lifting weights is one of the best ways for women to achieve fat loss; we can develop specific regimes that compliment a woman’s goal sand desires. The list of benefits for lifting weights for anyone is quite extensive, just to name a few for women, it is proven to be extremely beneficial in the prevention or progression of osteoporosis by improving bone density, and it increases a woman’s fat burning capabilities and facilitates positive changes to the metabolism, and finally it can regulate stress hormone production which in turn helps with mental stability and over all wellbeing, it is true that exercise in all forms releases endorphins those fantastic feel good chemicals!

Myth 3 Muscle turns to fat if you stop exercising This is quite easily dispelled for me, muscle and fat are two completely different types of tissue. One does not become the other. When you stop exercising, your muscles shrink, or atrophies, so over time, so the percentage of body fat generally increases while muscle mass decreases, but one can never become the other. So what people may find is that their muscle definition from their 20’s disappeared and fat replaced it when it actually didn’t do that at all, all that has happened is that adipose tissue or fat cells as they are better know have grown and spread to cover over the top of our muscles.

I encounter, for people who have tried everything and truly believe they never can and never will, this creates a massive mental barrier from even getting started. I feel really upset for these people because all they need is some encouragement and to be shown just what they are actually capable of, this stems beyond vanity and body type, it’s about health and wellbeing. There are so many obesity related diseases that are so prevalent in today’s society, and lets not avoid the fact that they can be life limiting and greatly decrease a person’s quality of life, and what’s worse is the vast majority do feel as though they just can’t do anything to change it for one reason or another. The recipe for success is simple, and I have said it before the incorporation of clean and freshly prepared foods at home, the planning and implementation of and exercise program to suit a client’s needs and a supportive environment!

Myth 5 That muscle is bigger and weighs more than fat It’s kind of like one of those riddles because if you think about it, kg of fat weighs just as much as a kg of muscle… In reality, what people are trying to explain is that muscle is actually more dense than fat. In other words, it takes up less space. Think of fat as being fluffy almost like cotton candy. Well, gooier. Think of fat as being voluminous… as taking up more space. Under your skin so the same weight of fat while taking up a greater surface area would essentially weigh less than the same surface area of muscle

Myth 6 One for fun - drinking wine is not the same as eating grapes or fruit!!!!

New menu Meet the team

Each one of our chefs has chosen to be here, cooking for you at Club Taree, and we think that is something pretty special. “Club food” has evolved, cooking is not our job, cooking is our life. We cook with our hearts, humbled with pride that we are able to share our creations with you. Following the successful relaunch of Dineon19 with our extremely popular Dineon19 Winter Menu, we were proud to launch and unveil the new Summer Menu on the 2nd November. While many of the house favourites have remained, we have introduced a great new range of speciality dishes which help showcase the best seasonal produce, the skills of our chefs, while also helping to emphasise our passion for food.

Kara has been with us here at Club Taree for a six years, she is a passionate and hardworking team member, who currently holds the title of Front of House Catering Supervisor. Most of you would know here from Dineon19, or of course as joint host of our successful High Teas.

My current role is rewarding, I am responsible for the day to day supervising of Dineon19, but I also work with the chefs, as well as the bar and function teams to ensure the entire catering department runs smoothly. I have been hosting our regular High Tea events with Kristy Lee, which run on the first Saturday of the month. There are lots of other little jobs, such as ordering, stock control, cleaning, maintenance that I also need to tend too.

until 2.30pm for lunch and from 6pm for dinner. Bookings are advised.

What do you like about working at Club Taree?

What does your role entail?

I started at Club Taree as a kitchen hand in 2010. My position as a kitchen hand lasted for 12 months, then I worked my way to becoming a food and beverage attendant. In April 2015 I became the Restaurant Team Leader of Dineon19, since then there has been a lot of exciting changes to better the club and our community.

Open daily from 12noon

have also introduced the new Chef’s Table private dining room as well as adding in THE CRAFT SHOP, which both support the restaurant operations, and enhance the overall guest experience.

Kara Sheather

Kara, tell us a little about your time here at Club Taree.

Dineon19

There have been a number of changes at Dineon19 over the last twelve months, tell us about these. There have been a number of structural and cosmetic changes such as the new restaurant layout, the introduction of one way service and new menus. We

I really like meeting new customers, though my favourite part is working with our amazing team, we are like a huge family.

Tried and tested interview question, if you could invite 4 people to dinner who would they be and why? I would invite Mathew, Lauren and Amanda, they are my three closest friends, we don’t get enough time to catch up and share our stories. The fourth would be Gordon Ramsey as he is my favourite chef, he is brutally honest, which I like.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter Cash Housie Each week Club Taree supports the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with cash prizes for their weekly “Helicopter Housie”. In the last reporting Club Grants year we were delighted to donate $11,641.40 to this fabulous service. With a relationship that has spanned over 20 years, we are honoured to have donated in excess of $180,000 to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service since 1994. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) has been operating Cash Housie in Taree since March 1994 raising over $756,000 in that time. In 1994 when we commenced it was at Taree RSL Club then in 2003 we moved to the Taree RSL & Golf Club – known as Club Taree. The WRHS provides a free aero medical search and rescue service to over 1.2 million people, covering a region of 132,000 square kilometres. The Service operates in the Hunter, Mid North Coast, Central Coast and New England – North West Regions The WRHS conducts 20 sessions per week of Cash Housie at a range of Registered Clubs in NSW, and assists the Service by raising regular income of over $650,000 p.a. The program 25

assists the Service in operating costs, providing equipment, training and much needed upgrading of aircraft fleet as required. Cash Housie is a game of “chance”, players purchase a Bingo book numbered 1-90. There are 15 numbers in 6 separate boxes, once you have dabbed all 15 numbers in one box then you have “WON”. The caller, calls the numbers which are randomly drawn using a computer and are displayed on a large screen for customers to see. Cash Housie is a great program for people both young and old – it is considered great “exercise for the mind” with some customers well into their 90’s continuing to play each week. Not only does it enable customers to socialize, sharpen their minds, they

can also win great CASH prizes whilst contributing to a valuable Community Service. Cash Housie is played every Wednesday Books on sale 10am first game 11am.

We cannot thank Club Taree and the Taree Community enough for their generosity and ongoing support of our Cash Housie program as the Service celebrates our 40th Anniversary this year.
