purity and simplicity

'Mies here fashioned his own explicit credo for the reform of architecture in capitalist society, directed not toward changing that society but toward the symbolic control of its exploitation of nature, its blindness to the past, and its destruction of freedom through unrestrained mechanization. 'fruitmotion' fruit+motion/emotion installation

07_inspiration 08_bibliography 09_concept 10_making process 11_prototype04: purchase behaviour 12_virtual work 13_interactive process

Fruitmotion is a compound word for fruit and motion as well as emotion, which is about rotation, movement of fruits. Fruitmotion includes three main subjects: emotion, movement and paradox. They are all inspired and extracted from different images, theoretical resources and bibliographies, having relationships with one another.

inspiration

starting design in daily life, daily place and daily behaviour By visiting several supermarkets and street markets in Canterbury, a lot of recordings and enquiries were made and tested customers’ reaction in reality that help this project combine personal experience and real perception together. Understanding a common thing in our life sounds really easy, however, a plenty of details can be explored and justified via our own five senses and recordings that compare and evaluate theoretical thinking with reality.

bibliography 04 inspired by theories and reference resources Based upon theoretical developments in project development course, researches and studies focus on three main subjects: emotion and design, purchase behaviour and methods of display. Relationships among these three main subjects are commercial spaces and customers who behave and interact with products in a space. As customers have purchase behaviour, they will have specific emotions or feelings with those products and influenced by many factors, such as displays, in specific commercial space where spatial perception and impression are created by interior designers.

paradox

concept From teapots, spoons to flowers and common daily objects, emotions are embedded in normal things in our life, which evoke us via our memories and associations as well as different senses. Extracted literally from science fiction’s plots, the notions of illusions and paradoxes are made up and connected to properties of different objects in daily life. Owing to the reason that we live with our own values and experiences via our senses, relationships between us and daily objects create subtle behaviours for humans and attract people with different characteristics.

Related to spatial and site-specific relationships between people’s purchase behaviour and commercial space in life, buying colourful fruits in supermarkets is regarded as common as breath. Movement of customers, trails of people and picking-up behaviour in the supermarkets are well noticed as the relationships are discussed among consumers, spaces and installations or fixtures.

Combining with emotion, paradox and movement together, the installation is designed to let participants experience the moment as they are buying things in commercial space. They may hesitate and think a lot before buying something, so the installation emotionalize that hesitation on fruits to show the specific emotion among customers, commodities and commercial space.

cat_woman empty wooden box design

15_concept 16_space detail 16_user analysis 17_plans 18_elevations 19_renderings

Wooden box represents a warm-material residence for people to live in as well as heart-warming belongingness; “empty” stands for space oriented meaning, which means that furniture is not predominant share of an interior space but “open space” is the key element. Thus, choices of furniture are various and up to residents, who can create their own atmosphere depending on their preference.

15

concept return “Return” in Chinese word is “ 回 ” which means going back to somewhere or original place. Words are best shapes to demonstrate concept because of combination of meanings and outlines, which can clearly explain context and ideas. For example, catwoman is a compound word with cat and woman that it can well show features of the both things above. By making good use of the features of words and combining shapes with ideas, new conceptual results are formed.

Using scale and shapes as prototypes of spatial design is connected to the essence of objects’ meanings or outlines, which can emphasize what are connections between conceptual ideas and design results. Moreover, where is designed in space by this method is important because concisely retrieving some elements can be highlights of environmental influences between users and spatial atmosphere.

Rectangular overlaps are the main idea of ground floor, which includes boundary definitions, material choosing and functional areas design. Furthermore, cabinets are another key point of this floor due to preferences and habits of users, who immerse themselves in reading books, collecting gadgets and storage. Based on abundant books demands of users, enough cabinets for storage are necessary, thus, a mezzanine library is created to accumulate a lot of things not only books but personal clutter. Simultaneously, boundary is set up to distinguish private areas from public ones by height differences.

AA' section Receiving sunlight by facing extensive openings, meditators can get inspiration as much as possible. The process of going upstairs from porch to meditation platform is just like pursuing silence and worshiping a sort of religion or God, which is pure and step by step.

BB' section Heights are calculated carefully at this area because of considering that users stay here temporarily for eating meals and just sitting. There are two different forms of seats can be chose due to height differences: first one is dining chair 45 centimeters in height another one is bar chair 90 centimeters in height. The above kinds of chairs are set at the opposite of dining table, catering for users and visitors’ preference.

CC' section Space above porch and living room is for reading, writing and storage as well as enhancing a sense of interest. When spectators stand in front of the glass guard rail, they can look at “box” at the opposite side of mezzanine or have interaction with people inside bedroom.

DD' section “Wooden empty box” refers to bedroom because it is a space to take a respite and refreshing oneself as well as serving as bedroom for guests. A container floats in the air is similar to the concept of building appearance that this building is a wooden box in concrete jungle.

concept

Simple lines and white geometric shapes are two main elements in this case, accenting the space with clear and extensive atmosphere in modern style. Simplicity varies space with purity and possibilities that gives beholders a strong impression of visual experience. Main role in this case is clothes, thus, space should be taken as a container or showcase to display them in unconscious way.

Limited by small areas in city centre, this clothes shop aims at providing a fast experience of young Korea clothes for customers, including picking-up, trying-on and shopping behaviour. Plan is arranged in a loop by middle cabinet which provides the function of display and storage, and all dimensions are well-concerned for pathways and movements of customers.

In Taiwan, lots of buildings are designed as communities and flats for residents due to small areas in residential district in cities. Taking good use of the small areas in the cities becomes the most important consideration for designers and clients, which leads to specific spatial types for people living in Taiwan.

27

concept

Layers, different spatial understandings for occupants, give a space different expressions and connections that accents relationship between residents and spaces. As a space is separated by height, it is equipped with diverse possibilities and various definitions for areas as well as those connections between one space and another. Stairs are key elements between space and space, linking unexpected spatial possibilities together and enhance decent spatial atmosphere.

The stairs not only provide a bridge for residents climbing up but also separate private and public areas in the space. As this en-suite apartment is designed for two people as maximum, the stair also give an opportunity for residents to invite their guests.

bamboo lamp and shelf design

34_concept 35_making process 36_exhibition

Bamboo is a specific material used in several places, such as furniture, faรงade, decorations and so on. These projects are the first time that I used bamboo as main materiality of my project, which were a new experiments and experiences.

34

bamboo leaves

light bulb

concept Trying a new work with unused material, I decided to face challenge just as the concept of this bamboo shelf. When you appreciated this shelf in different directions, you could find out changes of bamboo. Except that specific views can be observed in three elevations, shadow and light effect are concern and coming from criss-cross veins of leaves. Intuitive thinking structure is adopted in these two furniture designs so as to reflect original outlines of things. From bamboo leaves and light bulb to shelves and lamp, simple connections can be easily perceived , also using direct observation is an easy method to integrate intentions and works.

With embedded LED lights on inner side of bamboo strips, the craft reveals bamboo stripes in an artificial outline, bulb- shaped. Combined with easy idea and shape, simplicity of style and function are emphasised.

35

making process

It was the first time that I tried to use natural material to create new craft with craftsman who comes from other city in his bamboo workshop. From communication to practical producing, detailed revision and finishing touch, everything is novel and interestingly unexpected for me.

36

exhibition

The exhibition called ‘Be Yourshelf’ was a final exhibition in my third year of university in Taiwan. Light and shadow effects are unexpected at the moment because spotlights were different in the exhibition and varied in specific situation, giving special impression not only the shelf itself but also interaction among shelf, beholders and exhibition space.

Laozi cultural and creative mug design

38_concept 39_details

Extracted from Tao Te Ching made by Laozi, this project derives from Chinese character ‘為’ that means great achievement of a person. Those achievements are based on people’s behaviour which are handled by the people themselves.

38

concept

The key idea of this project is to let people rethink meanings of achievement that are controlled in their hands and their own abilities. Using outlines of Chinese character ' 為 ' as an inspiration to create shape of mugs, the project also need people’s hands to finish the shape of Chinese character ' 為 ' to represent success is grasped by people’s hands.
