The editor in chief’s word
EDITOR LETTER We live in a special time - a period of transformation. War has come to our house. But as history shows, any crisis is an impetus for progress. An opportunity to review our values, beliefs and principles. The current situation faced by our generation exposes the thin and fragile, giving the opportunity to become stronger. Just as fire and water temper steel, changing the crystal lattice of matter, so a person changes at the inner level. They say bad times become good memories. Having filled the issue with interesting content, we are gradually making changes to the design of the Home and Interior magazine itself. This issue is special in every way and from every angle. Therefore, we wish you, as well as ourselves, to keep up with the times, be open to innovations and fill life with bright colors. «Everything will be Ukraine» Chief Editor of the magazine House and Interior. Built on a 700 sqm plot on a main road of a quiet North Tel Aviv neighbourhood, Z house was designed to provide its owners a sense of serenity and utmost privacy, offsetting the shortcomings of its busy location.

With a garden in between, the front south facade was designed as a two layer buffer with a garden between, thus maintaining the privacy of the residents while reducing the traffic noise from the surroundings. The entrance was defined as a “hole in the wall: the façade has no openings, only a niche with a steel door. Entering Z house showcases the north façade, completely open to the back garden, bringing together the interior and outdoor living spaces. To emphasize the lightness of this façade, a 4 meters high glass wall rises over the ceiling creating the appearance it is floating in space.

During the 1930s, the house was extended and architecturally redesigned, adding a second floor with a tiled roof, a gallery balcony, and exterior stairs. With the passage of time, the beautiful house suffered from neglect. However, it was recently sold to its new owners, a family of six.

The front yard that had originally been two meters higher than the street was terraced, creating a new level with a welcoming exterior entrance and a service area on the street level as well as a new lowered yard that brings in natural light and air to the basement. A new staircase was designed and built to lead towards the preserved entrance level. A garden patio was designed as the heart of the house between the old wing and the new one, providing extra natural light and functioning as an intimate private outdoor space in the middle of a very dense urban fabric.

GAL GAON GALLERY DESIGN & ART COLLECTION Gal Gaon (Israeli, b. 1967) is an architect and designer based in Tel Aviv, Israel. His custom-designed furnishings include tables, desks, benches, consoles, and stools that marry the fields of fine art and design. His multi-disciplinary creative philosophy is reflected through contradictions in his work–he strives work that is clean and sleek while he injects an edgy aesthetic. He selects material to emphasize these contrasts, such as particular woods and finishes juxtaposing deep black with light panels, or orienting wood grains in various directions. Gaon’s architectural training is also apparent in each piece with mathematical precision and a balancing of of line, form, composition and structure. Each work is designed and fabricated in Israel. Gaon received his degree in architecture from Bezalel, Jerusalem and earned an EMBA from Tel Aviv University.

Businessman Roman Abramovich purchased a villa at 93-95 Nasi Ben-Zvi Street in Herzliya Pituach in early 2020, paying for it a record 226 million shekels (about $65 million) for Israel. The seller of the villa is Alan Howard, owner of one of the world’s largest hedge funds Brevan Howard, who bought it in 2006 from Lenny Recanati for $9 million and invested tens of millions of dollars in its expansion.

For two years, Howard tried to sell it for $100 million, and a year ago he leased it to Abramovich with a sale option, which was exercised. The area of the villa is 9500 sq.m. To create it, four land plots were combined.

The villa also has a tennis court, a pool with a hydraulic bottom that can be raised and turned into an event area, a basement floor. This is the third property purchased by Abramovich in Israel. In 2015, he purchased a plot on Shabazi Street 11 in the Neve Tzedek quarter of Tel Aviv, on part of which the historic building of the Versano Hotel is located, and in 2019, the Bait Magen building on Shenkar Street 2 in Tel Aviv.

It is into the same corner that visitors first arrive and get to see where both worlds meet. The upper floor is like a weighty box that rests on a glass cube. The area’s form includes some variations in height between the entry zone (55,23 MSL) and the south-western end (53.75 MSL). On the open side, we developed a water landscape with a 30m long pool that leads to a fnal basin at a lower stance in the garden’s greenest segment. We directed the water to this irregular section of the estate, where the two long sides of the structure join and form a point in the dense vegetation. The water fow, similar to a river, fows via a stepped fall kasaneochi, formed by juxtaposed stones that follow the direction of the water. As a result, depending on the fow and velocity of the water, it produces a varied sound.

The compositional design idea for this home was to build 600 covered square meters distributed over three storeys, while also attempting to create the illusion that this volume does not exist. During the early design phase of this project, the initial ideation was to emphasize and sublimate the dispersed nature that surrounds the estate, as well as to turn essential aspects of the site into its values. The roof is made by the juxtaposition of two scalene triangles, which are based on the main axis East-West of the house. The axis is the base of the volumetric and organizational order of the house. Starting from the entrance, at +55.25 m, the frst southern part under the roof towards the pool includes the living room, the dining room, and the kitchen. These zones receive light not only from the three sides of the perimetral triangle but also from above, coming from the cut between the ceiling surfaces.

This small garden also works as a meditation place, an intermission along the domestic path, to observe nature and the seasons’ changing, refecting the various atmospheres in the most intimate part of the house. On the right, light enters from the garden terrace, which is placed in the breach between the two portions of the roof. The frst foor is composed of three areas, one for each son. A space open to the exterior was built for each section, providing the sons with a place separate from the communal spaces of the rest of the house. The room with access to the garden-terrace is located above the entrance of the building and was designed like an independent apartment, facing the surrounding green gardens. The other two sons’ apartments are respectively connected to the patio and the covered terrace. Oblique folds of the roof are visible here, as they were positioned on this foor to provide a continuous vista and that enhances the natural light.
The point at the end of the house appears to hover above the lower portion of the estate, due not only to the diference in height of the region but, also to the glass between the ground foor and the lower level. These broad empty spans were made feasible by the folding of the roof surface and its structural scheme. The most public areas, the ofce and library, are located on the lower level facing the garden with the fnal pool and the lush vegetation. The area is fully enclosed by glass and is lit from the top as well as from the terrace adjacent to the last point. The wellness area, gym, cinema, and parking are all located on this foor, which is connected to the ground level through a private stair. The diferences are achieved by ramps and concealed linkages in the gardens, creating a promenade that traverses the various exterior and interior regions. Water, the major visual and acoustic element that mutates the endless refections among the surrounding foliage, the sky, and the glass, is continuously present in the company of vibrant green vegetation.

Although from afar, the house seems one-leveled, this house – which sits on a platform that rises 60cm above ground level and it has another level dug underground. The Pavilion House’s structure resembles a tent raised on stilts – eight frames of steel poles and beams, set in two-meter intervals, hold the concrete ceiling and frame the central space, reaching 3.85m high. Around the layout of poles and beams the house is enveloped with wide windows held in place with a surrounding steel beam in which various systems are concealed. A ribbon window situated above the beam makes the ceiling seem to float - another ribbon window, set in the gap between the platform and the house, illuminates the basement.

The house takes more natural light entering through a rectangular internal courtyard at the heart of the house, completely open to the sky and surrounded with glass walls that allow sunlight to reach the basement floor. «This abundance of natural light is framed with four thick walls, one on each facade – that delineate the house’s different areas (the entrance wall, the living room wall, or the main bedroom),» said Pitsou Kedem Architects. «These walls are covered in a thin layer of slate planks placed one slightly overlapping the other. This arrangement of planks sets the tone of the house’s overall design – the window openings in the walls, the texture of the internal walls and the carpentry items, the flooring slabs and the garden planters.»

This house is home of two architects and two children. The design of our own house lasted about 6 years. During this time, we have tried different shapes, sizes, materials, details, everything on paper and never understood why is this so long due to lack of time to devote ourselves to design, budget, etc. Considering that during this time we have gained a lot of experience in other projects and hours of conversations with clients, listening to their dilemmas, we became more aware of our own needs, and our values became clearer and more understandable.

The point in time at which we finally felt ready to build was a combination of both professional and personal clarity about what we dream of and what we need. Having lived on the lot in a small house for many years and experienced life as two large pecans and many other fruit trees, we knew that the new home would be part of an existing garden that had been there long before us. The starting point for us was green surroundings, perfect daylight and a westerly breeze from the nearby Mediterranean Sea. The choice of materials was a very clear agenda for working with materials in their bare, basic state; marking form and structure in their most sincere state. Celebration is also what is for us, a harmonious and subtle connection with a well-grounded garden. The same materials are carried inwards to blur the lines inside and out.

Concrete and masonry are the most common building materials and building technologies in Israel. From a practical standpoint, raw finishes weather respectfully and aesthetically unlike renders, which are always in need of repair. We love local materials and always we get frustrated when rendering covers everything. The height of the house is determined by the size of the blocks and the subtle search for a powerful harmony in scale between people and space, between street and house, between earth and hair. A thin concrete roof hangs over the central space, allowing a constant look into the sky and treetops and analyzes the question of the weight of the chosen “heavy materials”.

In the public area, a double-sided iron library crosses and separates the kitchen and living room without breaking the ceiling. The design of the library purposefully creates two “gates” between the two sides. Considering space for a single family and provoking a programmatic layout, we decided to divide between the children’s area and our area to the end of the house, while the meeting place for everyone is in the center, where the hall, kitchen and dining room are right in front of the trees. The wish was that the living room would act as a courtyard; Closed garden, extension of the gar-
den inside the house. Each area is defined by its own roof, which defragments and reduces the overall length of the house. The house is built one-storey, about half the height of the trees; So, on the one hand, it is not higher than the trees, but on the other hand, inside, it feels very spacious and airy, with openings facing east and west for optimal daylight and air. Outside the main house, there are deck walkways and two additional enclosed service spaces that together create a little bit of rustic atmosphere intertwined indoors and outdoors.

Architect Eran Binderman, Binderman Architects, designed the interior of an apartment in Tel Aviv, Israel. The client asked for a spacious loft-style apartment that would be very bright, spacious and, most importantly, not too “fashionable”. Different zones smoothly flow into each other without encountering obstacles. Only private rooms are separated from the common space - the master and guest bedrooms, dressing rooms and bathrooms.

The architect’s idea was to create an urban loft-style atmosphere in the apartment: a spacious balcony and large windows connect the interior to the urban landscape, while the polished stone floor resembles a concrete road surface. Darker colors are intended to create a cozy feeling. The contrast between warm materials - rough wood, textured concrete walls, textiles - and minimalist coolers like stainless steel and glass add brightness to the room. Photographer: Oded Smadar

This is a story about a home and the family that lives in it. It’s a story about eucalyptus that was planted here 50 years ago. A story about lightning and industrial structure and a desire to give the sense that the home was always present on the field. On a 400 sqm plot, a 320 sqm house was designed, 3 floors high. The house is built in an industrialized style that combines colored metal plates in black, which highlights the desire to create a temporary presence structure that respects the natural environment and the urban fabric.

A decorative pool reveals a waterfall façade towards the entrance of the lot and is surrounded by an access ramp leading to the upper level of the house. The house entrance experience is accompanied by the murmur of water and the shadows of a Weeping Willow tree growing up from the pool. The entrance outdoor foyer functions as a front porch that overlooks the front garden and towards a patio that connects between both levels of the house and allows views between its various parts. Entrance to the house, through a common passage to private houses built in a new complex. To ensure privacy, a floating steel structure and exterior drywall sheets were assembled around the house, with 30 cm gaps between them. The plot is small, so a small garden was laid out on the roof of the parking lot. “The floating element,” says architect Lior Rosenfeld, “is used on the top floor as a screen to hide the face of the neighboring house.” The “Western Green” area in the northwest of Herzliya contains mostly apartment buildings and 40 private houses. The hallway connecting the bedrooms on the top floor opens onto the concealment element and the rooftop garden of the car park with large windows.

The goal was to remove all the “noise” and create an urban villa with maximum privacy. The white front door opens into the living room. Hanging on the wall in the dining area is a work by Yossi Bacher, selected by with the help of a curator working with architects. “My husband’s dream was a private house, and I always refused it,” the mother of the family says frankly. “A private house requires a lot of care and maintenance. I was also afraid for the kids because of the size, the stairs, the pool.” The dream of a villa was made when the couple lived with their three children (now aged 21, 18, 13) in four-room apartment in the center of Herzliya. Eventually, despite their mother’s misgivings, the couple began looking for a suitable house in the city. First they were looking for a built house. When they could not find it, they decided to buy an empty plot for construction. “Herzliya is very expensive,” the mother explains, “sellers are asking for a very expensive price for a house that is in need of renovation. This brought us to the construction site situation.” A suitable site was found in the Western Green area. It is located northwest of the city center, close to major roads and close to attractions such as Herzliya Park, the country club, the performing arts hall, and the Seven Stars mall.

In 2004, the area was expanded with the addition of 717 housing units, 40 of which are stand-alone units, and has been seen as in demand ever since. “An amazing and quiet area,” says the mother, “if earlier the Sokolovsky district was the center, since the park was opened and the city has developed towards exits, the area has become in demand and has become central.”

They came to the architectural bureau “Shahar-Rosenfeld” about a year ago through a brokerage office, where they were helped to find a site. Their request from architects Yael Shahar and Lior Rosenfeld was clear: “A warm and practical home, an apartment for every child, a beautiful courtyard with swimming pool and ... privacy. In an area characterized by a combination of rich and land-based development, the architects were faced with the challenge: how to plan a private house in an urban environment and at the same time maintain privacy?

Originally built in 1975, a cottage in a town in Israel’s Sharon district has been renovated for a couple who are beautiful inside and out: he is in the computer business and she is in the textile business. The cottage has two air ducts from the north and south, the total area of the house is 210 sq.m., it consists of two floors and has undergone several repairs over the years. Since the house was originally built as part of a larger contract building project, it was evident that little attention had been paid to the quality of the space. Despite the house’s renovation history, the house was never designed with a consistent

The process of planning and finalizing the design took place quite quickly, the renovation took several months, during which the house took on a new look. When you open the entrance gate to the plot, a green garden is revealed, divided into two levels, clearly separating the entrance from the recreation area, which you can enter through a large glass window directly from the living room. The hallway has utility cupboards, a door and walls covered in a single MDF palette painted to match the wall.

BE|LIVE BY KOLEROVIY ARCHITECTURE
The concept of modular houses of the Be|LIVE by KOLEROVIY ARCHITECTURE project is residential blocks of different areas (25 м2; 28 м2; 35 м2; 42 м2 and 51 м2), which can be interlocked in any way. Thereby providing extremely flexible variants of the layout and area of the house
Blocks are not dependent on each other but can create a common space of premises. Our concept is a growing home that can be expanded with the growing needs of the family. A ready-made residential block, manufactured in factory conditions, is delivered by truck and installed on the site, and can be moved if necessary. Modern architecture is complemented by smooth and, at the same time dynamic, biopositive interiors.
