PODIUM Think! I WAS talking to a friend of mine the other day (not the one who led me to the Dunning-Kruger Effect in my Feb ’16 editorial, it’s another one) and the conversation drifted onto personal freedom, bureaucracy, big brother government etc, etc. It was one of those wide ranging academic discussions which could, and did cover a lot of ground analysing and solving the problems of the world. It’s great to have friends like him who spur us on to higher and deeper thinking than we’d normally engage in. At some point we got onto the subject of the semi-dictatorial control of the masses by local and central government and he asked if I’d ever heard of the Monderman Hypothesis? The what?...no I hadn’t, so he went on to describe it to me. It was fascinating so bear with me and I’ll explain. Hans Monderman is a Dutch roading engineer who proposed that when drivers are directed to stop, or go by traffic lights, they’re more likely to go on autopilot and not pay attention to what’s going on around them. He proposed a total removal of everything which traditionally kept cars and pedestrians separated. No signs, no kerbs, no traffic lights, no speed limits, no marking on the roads. Just a shared space. In a real-time, live experiment on a street which had more than 20,000 vehicles per day, drivers and pedestrians alike had to rely on their own internal assessments of a situation. The uncertainty triggered a more cautious driving style. But also, to solve conflicting situations, people had to seek eye contact, to read people’s intentions from their behaviour, to sort things out for themselves. The result? Speeds dropped by 40%, the traffic flowed better, and while accidents and injuries still happen, these are minor events, with smaller consequences – events which are easier to learn from. The resulting change in driver behaviour begs the questions: is
4 > N Z H OT RO D A P R I L 2 0 1 6
complete control via an overdose of instruction a paradigm? And should we ditch traffic lights in the interest of enhanced road safety? If you’ve ever driven in the USA you would’ve come to a 4-way intersection with no traffic lights, just stop signs on every corner. The rule is: the first one to arrive at the intersection has right of way. It takes a bit of getting used to but really makes you careful about proceeding. What Monderman’s reverse psychology thinking also says is this: take personal responsibility for your driving behaviour. Analysing why it works is the work of rocket scientists and brain surgeons but the outcome is clear: big brother governmental control by instructions backed by laws is perhaps not the right answer to all our problems or driver stupidity. Here’s an example which comes to mind. It’s a bit off to the side but bear with me. Our hobby is extremely safety conscious, always has been and we can take pride in the fact that all our cars are built to a standard which is administered by LVVTA/NZTA. Recently there’s been a tightening of adherence to those standards which has had what effect? I know of three road accidents recently involving certified hot rods and thankfully there were no lifethreatening injuries but I suspect the time and money spent chasing every last detail, nut, bolt and split pin could be reduced by at least 50% and there’d be little of no change. I suspect this is because with no thirdparty checking by big brother it’d be up to the car owner to take personal responsibility and get underneath and spanner-check every nut and bolt himself in the interest of personal safety. Can you see the parallel? Big brother governmental policies tend to use one big blunt instrument to cover all situations, taking away our ability to think for ourselves. I know, you’re thinking there’s going to be at least someone stupid enough to not take personal responsibility and be unsafe, but surely with training and practice there could be change over time? I think that over-instruction and control is wasteful and teaches nothing important except follow the signs, shut up and drive and there’s
no fun or skill in that! Think about it. Darting off on a tangent again I’d like to signal the fact this issue is the beginning of our 50th year of publishing which culminates in our 50th Anniversary in April 2017. Planning is already underway for that magic milestone issue and events, and we trust and hope everyone will be here to share the celebrations. It was refreshing to receive news this month that NZ Hot Rod magazine has jumped 18 places in the rankings of magazine sales in NZ. In the process we’ve increased 9% while the industry declined 1.9% so thankyou to all you loyal readers who buy the magazine and in the process have helped make this title a very long term success. Another nugget of good news we’ve deviated from the norm by including a free panoramic poster in this mag which is brought to you by Classic Cover Insurance and with thanks to the superb photography of Alastair Ritchie who captured Frog’s cool custom Merc in a blazing Nelson sunset. We think it’s a keeper and hope you enjoy it too. And that’s not all! Another top story in this issue is the revelation of the world’s rarest deuce 3-window coupe. This one’s been on our radar for over a year and thanks to the hard work and diligence by Craig Stare plus co-operation from owner Grahame Cottle a marvellous story can now be shared. Oh, by the way: We invited Craig Stare to take the handlebars and choose the content for this issue, just for something different and he’s risen to the challenge so if you see him, give him a pat on the back for job well done. It all adds up to some great reading so drop your blade and plough into it. PG.

Thank you HI Paul and team, Just a short note to thank Owen Campbell and Al Dawson on the Sulphur City Starters series. It was neat going through old photos etc. Owen writes a good story. If anyone knows where the Mercury is please drop a line to the Hot Rod mag. Thanks, Soren Thomasen.
Circuit coupe HELLO, My name is Steve Jones, I have just read your article in September magazine 2015 on Red Dawson’s 1938 Willys coupe. I thought you may be interested in a story about my father’s 1938 Pontiac coupe. My father is a born and bred New Zealander who raced for many years in the ‘60s with his ‘39 Chev coupe and remembers watching Red Dawson race. When my father turned 60 he decided to build a replica
Similar GREETINGS rodders, I’ve just finished reading January 2016 issue and the feature car of Dave Tuke’s 1934 Ford 3-window coupe. Neat story and its early history in the 1970s and 80s (another identical car on page 58 also from California). Thought I’d share these pics of a similar car with a blown Ford V8 that was at a Hot Rod and Harleys show in Invercargill in 1995. (20 years ago). The coupe was also certified back then with its plate on the left hand side firewall. I wonder where the rod is now? Someone in hot rod land must know of its history since 1995. Regards, Ty Hepburn, Dunedin.
of his 1939 Chev coupe. Getting hold of a 1939 Chev businessman’s coupe proved to be very hard. Eventually he acquired a 1938 Pontiac Silver Streak coupe: from what I understand it’s the same car just different grille. Ten years ago he started his build with the same 302 GMC in-line 6 as he raced back in the day. The car has now been running in the Queensland Historic series here in Australia for five years. While still retaining most of the 1938 gear on the vehicle, some modifications like Motec fuel injection

³ Always remembered DECEMBER marked the 18th anniversary of the death of Kevin McInroe at Ruapuna Drags, and each year in Christchurch is a Club Challenge drag meet and a memorial rod run held in Kev’s honour. The 2015 Kevin McInroe Challenge at Ruapuna was won by The Garage, the 4-car team comprising of Grazee Collins’ Mustang, Geoff Dell’s T-bucket, Darren Blackburn’s Capri, and Jeremy Collins driving Brian Rielly’s El Camino. An equally big highlight for the team was to have Kristy Austin present the trophy. Kristy was Kevin McInore’s step-daughter and was only 12 years old when Kev died. Two weeks after the 2015 Challenge, Kristy was at the Memorial rod run, where she said; “I can’t believe how many people knew Kevin. It’s good to be part of it again, I need to get myself a rod!”
³ Three owners HERE is a cool pic. On left is the first owner /builder Pete Redfern, in the middle is Craig Stare who owned it the longest and painted it three different colours, then the one who looked after it the best is the current owner Don Muir. ³ A lifetime’s liff ti ’ work li k RENOWNED NZ Hot Rod magazine photog Allan Porter was everywhere, across all events, features and encompassed and captured the NZ Hot Rod scene for decades. Since his retirement he’s digitised his photographs and sent us a copy for safe keeping in our secure archives bunker. Hard to believe that almost 40,000 photos and an incredible lifetime’s commitment to hot rodding and the huge energy, time and money can be seen in such a small object huh! Hat’s off to you Al.
³ Curle/Ohlsen KIWI Shipping’s Steve Curle is a man on a mission with literally hundreds of contacts around the world but especially in America. On a fleeting visit we rode shotgun with him for a day and were privileged to view his private car collection. (see article this issue) One of Steve’s prized possessions is this signed/framed picture of a genuine Shelby Daytona coupe which has been autographed by Kiwi fabricator the late John Ohlsen who’s standing next to the coupe and who played a big part in the Daytona construction and race program. The autograph reads: To Steve and crew: John Ohlsen. Priceless!
³ Neville Smith cleans up NZHRM supports the NZ hot rodding and drag racing scene extensively via sponsorship and in many other ways. A new-ish initiative, now in its second year is the advent of the Pro Nostalgia drag racing class. Created to give racers with nostalgia cars more opportunities to race other than the annual Nostalgia Drags event, it’s found favour with many . This year Neville Smith in the black ‘23 T Altered won the class for the second year running and also won the overall title Top Drag Racer for the season. That’s dedication, consistency, performance and fun all wrapped up in one package huh!
³ Sedan style THIS chopped ‘34 Ford sedan spent a fair bit of time in the lower North island back in the day. From here it was stored in my shed for a while’ til it was onsold and put on the road by a Christchurch rodder. Eventually it found its way to Ashburton where longtime rodder Russell Haines painted it black, installed an interior, added the black 5-spoke mag wheels and now drives it everywhere. It’s well travcelled and has history but it now has that quintessential hot rod look we like!

³ Radio delete THIS very original ’66 Impala has an unusual option set: It has a 250ci 6-cylinder engine and manual 3-speed and the radio is deleted from the factory. How rare? Under the original paint is a straight, rust-free body crying out for a V8 and auto...read below for more ideas.
³ Join the dots CHUCK K also found this ’66 Impala 4-door sedan. It’s a sound car, but owned by an older couple who banged into things so there’s a few dents to take care of. Under the hood is the optional 275hp 327 and Powerglide auto. A perfect match for a swap into the 6-cylinder coupe above. If you feel you can join the dots and make a couple of great cars as a project give Chuck a call.

MY Y ffriendship i d hi with i h SSteve Curle C l started d way back when I worked for an automotive wholesaler called E.Sime and Co in Christchurch. I’m guessing the year would have been roughly around 1978. Steve worked with his dad at Khandallah Garage just north of Wellington. Like bees around a honey pot the garage was always infected by all his hot rod mates, whether it was to drink a cold one or to get their cars fixed. Many of the parts supplied came from the company I worked for. I went to a hot rod show in Wellington and finally met the

FLASHBACK
50 years of hot rod history behind the Peter Wright – Steve Fox – Colin Prouse - Daryl Robson – Kevin Carren – Pete Coulter ’34 Ford 5-window hot rod coupe.
1962 shot shows Al in the back yard of his parent’s home with his newly acquired hot rod.
Research by Craig Stare, Story by Peter Wright and Craig Stare. Photos from NZHRM archives, Peter Wright, Steve Fox, Colin Prouse
THIS story came as the result of research on a couple of photos of a traditional and good looking ’34 coupe given to Craig Stare, as is often the case. We’d studied the photos and decided the coupe was worth further investigation. With that task tucked into the back of his mind he continued on his daily grind. Craig regularly attends Christchurch events and has occasional contact with Peter Wright who he knew had owned a

hot rodded ’34 coupe at some time in the distant past and it was at one such recent swapmeet that he asked Peter about the photos. The answer was clear and definitive, yes that was my car once....it was a real revelation and provided an amazing slice of hot rod history and a giant piece of the missing puzzle. What follows is Peter’s story and a most interesting 50-year history of one of New Zealand’s hot rods..... Peter Wright recalls: My memories of the coupe go back to the early 1960s and the owner before me who was Dave Attwood of Geraldine. I presume the coupe was a Geraldine car as Dave grew up down there. When I first
saw it the colour was a sort of light willow green and it was completely stock and original in appearance. At some point there’d been a rebuild of sorts carried out as quantities of orange seachrome primer paint were found over the sheetmetal when I later stripped the body down for rebuild. Dave moved north to Christchurch following work and sometime in 1963 he and the coupe had an argument with a large pole on the Sockburn roundabout. This resulted in the complete demolition of the front sheetmetal and damage to the front chassis crossmember and front axle. Not long after that Dave moved south

Y had been sold and replaced with a ‘48 V8 sedan which was then moved on and replaced with a ‘49 single spinner. Next on the agenda was sourcing parts for the hot rod coupe. A ‘40 pickup was located up Greenstreet Way for twenty pounds which provided small centre wheels and hydraulic brakes. Bob Roper took its front fenders and grille for his own ‘40 pickup he was driving at the time. Other bits and
overseas would be a good idea and saving for that became a priority. At the time I was working on the Nassella Tussock Board as a foreman with Peter McGowan. I’d told Peter about the coupe and he expressed interest in acquiring it. Shortly after that he became the next owner. As I was 6 months off heading away, I spent many cold frosty nights working with Peter on the car, following the ideas I had
A change of job in 1965 then saw me move first to Christchurch and then to Amberley to work. The coupe languished in its shed in Ashburton.
Model Y Ford and wanting to be part of the V8 fraternity, I decided a rebuild of the coupe was a way to get a very desirable car. A tatty but complete and original ‘33 tudor deluxe sedan was located in Geraldine (where else?) and after paying the princely sum of twelve pounds ten shillings for it, I drove it back home to Ashburton. The intention was to use the tudor’s running gear under the coupe body to replace the damaged components. At the time I was working in Ashburton with hot rodder Gerry Brand who was a Rodbenders club member. Gerry being Gerry had me convinced in no time flat that the way to go with the coupe was to channel it and make a hot rod. And so the transformation from stocker to hot rod began. In the meantime the Model
pieces were accumulated from around the area and the coupe started to come together it its new guise as a hot rod. The chassis was double-Z’d: first cut just behind the firewall, second cut just before the frame kick-up at the rear. A double Zed was decided on as a straight channel didn’t leave me any room to move inside with the depth of channel which was planned. The floor was cut out and the body dropped over to the desired channel depth. The diff was installed and a start made on altering the floor to accommodate the double Z in the chassis. A change of job in 1965 then saw me move first to Christchurch and then to Amberley to work. The coupe languished in its shed in Ashburton. I then decided a couple of years

to Ashburton again following work and the coupe was flat-towed back south behind a ‘39 Chev coupe to join him there. (how ignominious an end for a Ford can you get!) By that time all the front sheetmetal had been removed and the motor taken out and placed across the chassis rails in front of the firewall. Dave steered the remains, (which was some achievement given that the axle and wheel alignment were probably well out of alignment) back down to Ashburton. I remember him saying that he lost skin off his knuckles going around the Dromore corner between Chersey and Ashburton as the steering wheel had been seriously bent in the crash and touched the dashboard. By this time he obviously needed another car and the order was filled by a dark blue ‘34 4-door sedan. (again from Geraldine) This had a doublepulley water pump 24-stud motor (ex army?) which was a bit tired, so the motor from the coupe was put into the sedan for reliable daily driving. I spent some time performing this transplant with him and as the coupe was left not running and surplus to his requirements, Dave said I could have it. My daily driver back then was a ‘37
for building it in the first place. We had the coupe completed in the form shown in the colour photo by the time I headed away in April 1967 and took photos of it together with the blue (by that time carnation red) ‘34 sedan of Dave Atwoods. I was driving the sedan having sold the ‘49er and being without a car, had assembled the sedan from a pile of parts after Dave had disassembled it for a rebuild and paint but never got round to putting it back together again. We also took the sedan on our honeymoon in 1967 as my wife Marlene and I were married about a month before we went away overseas. Two years later I landed back in NZ and went back to Amberley. Peter still had the coupe but was heading to Nelson for work, so offered the coupe
to me to use as long as I needed it on the proviso that I arranged the sale when we had finished with it. It was at this time that the colour photo was taken of the coupe. The girl behind the wheel(ref lead photo) is Marlene, my wife of 44 years. We used it as our everyday car for many months and finally sold it in late 1969 after buying its replacement which was a ‘55 Ranchwagon. If my memory serves me correctly the purchaser lived alongside the Avon river down towards the Brighton end. I delivered the coupe to him as he either didn’t have a licence or was not able to drive? Next time I came across the coupe was a photo of it included in an article on John Eva’s coupe in the March 1999 issue of NZ Hot Rod magazine. It was captioned as Pad Hoopers’ coupe and shown as an example of the inspiration which set John on a path of hot rodding.

From here the story is taken up by Craig Stare: The next owner’s name was Pad Hooper and as you can see there’d been quite a few changes, however the front bumper is still the same and its confirmed as the same car as the number plate
From here the story is corresponds to those of it taken in earlier photos. It now sported some real early style mags, possibly B/C and somehow the ex Eddie Fairbairn dragster engine which was one red hot flathead. The coupe was for sale in these pics for $750 and was located down
with the ’34 hood and grille painted yellow, with lots of help from Pipe Fitzpatrick. At the show the ‘34 won ‘Best Hot Rod Coupe’. Later in the year a 351 was installed and was followed by a feature article in NZ Hot Rod in March 1981. Steve advertised the coupe in the Dunedin newspaper in 1982: It just so happened that at the time hot rodder and NZ Navy employee Colin Prouse was on a Dunedin port visit on HMNZS Taranaki. He spotted the advert while reading the local paper and called Steve who drove the coupe down to Dunedin from Oamaru for a viewing. After a quick look over and a couple of laps of the wharf Colin bought it. He flew back to Dunedin a couple of weeks
later and drove it back to Auckland. Once back in the big smoke Colin had Dick Legge repaint it in lemon chrome and installed a set of Cragar wheels he purchased in Hawaii while on another ‘port visit’, then loaded them aboard. The car was driven a lot until 1983 when a lady did a U - turn in front of him resulting in damage to the front sheetmetal which made a rebuild mandatory. The rebuild was a major and featured black paint, a new repro chassis, 4” dropped axle, a very hot 296ci flathead backed by a 4-speed box and Jag rear end. Full information on this build-up appears in NZ Hot Rod’s October 1985 issue. The cool little coupe was impressive for the time and was chosen to represent NSRA at the annual hot rod show in Melbourne.

Bower Ave, very close to the river just like Pete mentioned in the above story. Yes, it’s the very same car. From here the coupe ended up in our southern city of Dunedin which is where next recorded owner Steve Fox purchased it from. It was bought from just around the corner from where all the early Southern City rod shows were held. This was circa 1976 and Steve got stuck in and had it on the road, flathead powered for the Street Rod Nats in 1977 resplendent in purple with yellow flames. Just prior to the Hurricanes 1980 show in Dunedin the car was repowered with 283 and Powerglide

magazine’s November 2002 issue. Darrel put the car up for sale around 2005 and it was purchased by Kevin Carren from Paengaroa kept it pretty much the same, and always immaculate. Kevin installed the 8-71 blown 509 cubic inch Dart engine (based on a big block Chev) with twin 950 Holley carbs. Those long distance trips are going to be a ton of fun but will sure cost a lot more in gas! After Kevin’s untimely passing the coupe eventually came up for sale and was purchased by Pete
This promotion was funded by NSRA chapters throughout the country. Yet another rebuild took place before it left included a roof chop, new black paint by Eric Jarman and flames by Scotty Bare. The raft of changes only allowed a few days to assemble it before being flown to Tullamarine airport where Colin drove it to the show at the Royal Exhibition building in Melbourne. The hot rod was in Australia for just eight days and got back in time for the Parakai National rod run. Around 1995 Colin sold the coupe to Darrel Robson from Rotorua less motor and box. Darrel’s plans were extreme to say the least: basically he wanted a modern street-going version of the famous 554
drag racing coupe which terrorised the drag strips of California, USA. The project was to take over six years to complete and when finally finished turned out to be a magnificent car. Terry Bowden assembled a chassis using SAC side rails and incorporated a 6-71 blown big block Chev, turbo 400 and 9” rear end. A chromed dropped I-beam and spindle mount front wheels and plenty of chrome set off the chopped body painted Bermuda blue. This car said ‘HOT-ROD’ in capital letters. Darrel took the car everywhere including the south island and won many awards and plenty of Top Ten trophies. An in-depth feature on the car can be found in NZ Hot Rod
Coulter (Nelson) and it remains exactly as seen in this latest photo. (below) So that closes the chapter on the 55-year history from 19612016 of another timeless hot rod coupe and its colourful life.

THE Christchurch suburb of New Brighton hosted the second Rockabilly Show & Shine in November, with hot rods, muscle cars, the Smash Palace motorbike display, best dressed Belle and Beau competition, rock ‘n roll dance displays, live bands, the seaside market, plus a great selection of bars and cafes for feeding and watering. Funds raised went to the New Brighton Project. Before the advent of shopping malls, New Brighton was the place to shop on a Saturday, but has been a little neglected over the years; the ‘quakes only compounding the problem. So it was good to see the place pumping, and that people do care. Check out some of the nice rides on show…

Kiwi Goodguys 2015
Woodend Campout From John Eva
KIWI Goodguys started in 1995 with a hiss and a roar, as a nationwide entity. Most areas fizzled out after a few years, but the Woodend Campout is a constant, and the 2015 event was one of the best in years. 55 entrants, plus kids, entered for the whole weekend, and a car show, free for the public, attracted around 60 rods and classics, with a good contingent from Seddon in the Marlborough region. Camp Manager’s Choice went to Adam Morris’ ’60 Pontiac. Apologies to other prize-winners; the list was not forthcoming.

Rob Morris restored his 1959 Ford retractable 26 years ago. It’s an immaculate, low mileage car which looks like it just drove out of a new car showroom.
Barry Hanright owns this 440ci powered 1971 Plymouth Satellite. With the number plate MMEEP you could easily mistake it for a Roadrunner.
Steve Simmons leans against his 1956 Buick Super Series 50 which he finished rebuilding back in 1999.
Tony Laing’s ultra reliable 401ci tricarb Buick nailhead powered pickup.
Rory Aitken found this 1959 Ford Galaxie in Utah and drove it all around the US before shipping it home to NZ. It has been repowered with a 302ci and the two-tone paint really suits this car.
Cruising to Maketu. Nice stance and black and white chequered firewall looks good.
Malcolm Wilkie from Marineland Rod & Custom Club in Napier owns this ‘28 Model A tudor with 305ci TPI.
This ‘34 Chev Junior has been in the Sulphur City club since the early 1970s. Back then it had a Holden engine. Kevin and Kerry Saunders have since repowered it with a 401 Nailhead Buick, Muncie 4-speed and 9-inch rear end.
Eastside Rodders members Murray and Heather Lincoln in their 1957 Ford Ranchero which has a 302ci, Toploader trans and 9-inch rear end.
Phil Webber and Wayne Tierney cruised up from Paraparaumu in Phil’s ‘36 five-window coupe. The coupe has a 350 Chev with Turbo 350 trans and 10-bolt rear end. Phil won Long Distance. > 29
Right hand drive ‘61 Bel Airs are almost a rarity these days. This fine example running on chrome smoothies is owned by Whakatane clubmember Jaffa. It has the popular 350ci / turbo 350 combo.
Everything is just right about Critta’s ‘28 Model A coupe. Six 97s and a magneto on a 392 Hemi in front of a Richmond T10 fourspeed. Critta and Vicki are members of The Lakers in Taupo.
Mel Surtees never has to worry about her husband “borrowing” her ‘66 Mustang convertible. Neil won’t drive anything lefthand drive and she won’t let him convert to right-hand.
Gordon Noakes’ NZ-new ‘56 F100 was chopped 28 years ago. It has a HQ Holden front clip, 327 Chev, T5 trans and a 9” Truetrack rear end. Gordon is a member of Marineland Street Rods.

Mark Stead is a man who not only has big dreams but has the talent and desire to carry them out to fruition. Over a period of a few years Mark created this wild truck out of nothing more than a few sheets of panel steel. Each year he’d bring it to Muscle Car Madness to display its progress. The finished product was featured in New Zealand Hot Rod magazine in April 2013. This rod is by no means the only NZ hot rod to have been taken to the States to compete. John Reid built a top car for Steve Payne and was right up there with the best in America. Mike Roberts probably got the least recognition for his creative talents with his amazing A pickup, although not the reason for the trip. Mark’s truck has probably done better than any other exported Kiwi hot rod. This article has been compiled to demonstrate that if you want to do something bad enough and you have the will to give up everything you own, and have an amazing supportive wife (Tanya) you can make it happen. Follow along and enjoy in the events that unfolded during this epic journey.....

Frid Fr iday id ayy 30tth Occto t be b r 20 2015 15 California has had an extended summer so the temperature was not as cool as we had planned. The radiators in the truck are under the deck and are air cooled from underneath. The air temperature this day was 30 degrees, combined with the heat from the vehicles on the freeway and the congested nature of LA freeways, the radiators weren’t coping. As this was a driving holiday, a modification was needed. We purchased a radiator for a ‘57 Thunderbird as it was the closet fit to the room we have and would work on a plan to install it tomorrow. Just cruising the Las Vegas strip. Steve Curle almost got a ticket for using his cell phone while driving ‘tll they figured out it was right hand drive!

A radiator replacement was required to cure overheating. It’s a very hot country, especially if you are parked on the freeway.
Left Pomona at 4:15am and headed to Huntington Beach for the Donut Derelicts casual hot rod gathering. (as they call it on their website). This was held in the car park of a shopping centre. We’d been told to be there at 5am, which we were. There were already 40 cars parked up when we arrived. Everyone has to be gone by 9am when the shops open and by that time there were 250 cars parked up. Ron from Topping Events was at Donut Derelicts and he offered the use of their workshop to fit the new radiator. Our plan A had been the carpark of the motel so this was a much better plan. Ron stayed and we are grateful for his help. The radiator fitted like a glove and we were back on the road. Jason from Topping Events invited us to his home for Halloween. The best outfit was his sons, he was dressed as a strip of bacon. The news late week had been how bad bacon was for you. h

We went for a drive to Huntington Beach and met up with Mel Craig ffrom The Detailing Pros. He offered to work his magic on the holograms on the truck’s paint. A very clever tradesman. h

Met up with Gene and Lo Chomowycz from Graphic Express, Marc Mitchell from Marcs Cars, Dunedin, Tony O’Donnell, South Island Hub Manager for Repco and numerous other Kiwis. Did the touristy visits to Counts Kustoms and Ricks Restorations. We were issued with a traffic infringement. This is our posting from Facebook. Discussing the plan of attack to fix the radiator, Ron Keilwitz to left, Mark in the middle and Marshall Topping to right.
Steve Curle, Kiwi Shipping and Mark went for a cruise down the Las Vegas strip last night in the truck. Eventually, Mark realised the blue and red flashing lights behind him were meant for him. Mr Plod approached the LEFT side of the truck and said to Steve “You were talking on your phone”. “Yes but I don’t have the steering wheel”. “I saw you on the phone”. “Yes but I don’t have the steering wheel, he does”. And pointed to Mark on the RIGHT hand side of the truck. We have been in similar situations with our lefthand drive Chev Impala at home and know Mr Plods don’t find this anywhere near as funny as we do. A discussion was then had as to why there is no visible VIN number and how the registration system works in NZ. Mark’s answer to where are your insurance papers was “you’ll have to ask Tanya”, who stayed back to do the washing. Mr Plod issued Mark with running a red light, which he didn’t but we guess he had to save face. It’s just funny. At one part on the way to Las Vegas, we were travelling at 148 km/hr and despite the NZ police advertising, we didn’t die. In fact our usual travelling speed was 120km/hr and not once did we die, nor did anyone who passed us.

CRAZY Y weather conditions gave us rain for a week prior to the event, only clearing on the Wednesday morning of the practice day. The weather continued fine and hot with a 35-degree day on Friday and a 32-degree hit on the Saturday. Sunday was somewhat overcast with 25 degrees, and perfect warm balmy nights. On the Monday afternoon when it was all over it rained for another few days. The camp was really buzzing on Wednesday night with around 75% already occupying everything which resembled a half decent spot. As Thursday was also extremely hot, most just preferred to “blob out” around the camp and get out the water fighting apparatus. (read guns which shoot water!) The good weather had entrants cruising at every possible opportunity. We seemed to have a bunch of minor incidents this year, a broken leg in three places whilst trying to climb into a caravan - sober! A “shovelling” which seems to have come ‘from both sides now’ in both directions from and to either victim. A skitzo girl wrestling her

fun. Tony Jeffs’ son Hogan followed in family tradition and built a wild Fiat 500 Bambina with a 250cc motorcycle engine in it, complete with wild wheel alignment issues. World’s Rarest Deuce? Grahame Cottle’s 1932 Ford 3-window coupe
> 63
From Craig Stare
IF YOU’VE been in our old car hobby for many decades or in my case 45 years you would’ve heard plenty of old stories or myths about the old car awaiting discovery in an old shed or barn: some are true, some are not. The internet is full of these stories of diamonds in the rough and there are even a couple of books printed on the subject. In our hobby the 1932 Ford has been one of the most popular icons
Most 1932 cigar lighters display a green light. This one has every deuce expert baffled as it is red.
worldwide whether it was in hot rod circles or in the Early Ford V8 club. In the fifties and sixties many of these cars were destroyed from either early stock car racing or the rather crude backyard building of jalopies. Luckily over the years the value of these cars has risen and have been lovingly looked after since the seventies. There are rarer models than the 3-window coupe but these are surely the prettiest and have always been considered “top of the pile” by most.
All original dash with glovebox, gauges and knobs.
Original Ford 3-window seat was a unique, one-off item. Upholstery fabric is the rose beige mohair option.

LEFT: The prize piece! The body tag shows it was one of very few 3-window coupes made in Canada, with only a handful being RHD.
ABOVE: Door pulls are original russet brown fine colonial grain leather which is unique to 1932. BELOW: Arm rests on doors were standard on the Deluxe coupes.
The coupe’s rear seat squab is in excellent shape.
The ace card! I’ve heard of dozens of stories of 3-window coupes lying around the country including the famous Kaikoura coupe which is still owned by the same owner who now resides in Nelson. Then there was another story about one on a farm in the lower north island. The thing to remember is that there were only ever 17 of these coupes ever imported into the country and we’re planning a future mini article to

show you 11 of the NZ new ones. This is the story of the lower North island coupe. The coupe featured was imported from Canada in knockeddown (kitset) form by Hope Gibbons who had taken over the Colonial Motor company Ford agents at the time. They constructed a nine story building at 89 Courtney place in Wellington for motor vehicle assembly and at the time it was the first in the country. The cars arrived knocked down in crates of parts on the top floor where the assembly began. More parts were added at each floor and eventually the completed car arrived on the ground floor all ready to drive away. This building still stands today. In 1936 the Ford Motor company took over distribution and vehicle assembly, building a big plant at Seaview near

Wellington and Colonial Motor company retained the dealerships. This particular car was owned when new by a female member of the Gibbons family, before it was sold several years later to a young Gilbert Cottle (Grahame’s dad) who
at this stage was a single man and the coupe has stayed in the family ever since - that is over 80 years! The coupe’s kitset was made in November 1932 in Canada and first registered in New Zealand in April 1933. That makes sense because
being a late ’32 production car it’d take several months for it to arrive in NZ by steamer and then be assembled. As far as Grahame knows the alloy heads have always been on the car and as they were

introduced in Feb/Mar 1933 it is possible that they were fitted at the factory which would have raised the compression from 5.5 to a whopping 6.33 to 1 and increased the compression from 114 lbs to 138 lbs at 1,800 rpm.. This increase gave the car a bit more horsepower (and torque) and also the efficiency made it more economical. The car was also equipped with a late coil (introduced on Nov 3rd 1932) which was shorter to allow for the 1933 styling change about to happen which incorporated that iconic sloping grille and radiator. Worldwide production was 23,411 3-window coupes, the majority made by the Murray Corporation in Detroit (only 277 of the U.S ones were for export) with a small number made by the Canadian Top and Body Corporation (812). This car is one of those 812. The number of genuine right-hand dive units must have been very little. All other 1932 Fords were made by the Briggs Corporation. Over the years the coupe got no special treatment; it was obviously well looked after and Gilbert’s only means of transport. When Gilbert was married, he had three children. When they were
pre-schoolers the five of them used to go to Wanganui to see the childrens’ grandmother. Graeme’s sister was in the middle of the seat, her brother stood up on the seat behind her and Grahame got to lie on the parcel shelf at the back! Apparently “dad” drove too slow and it was a common occurrence for their mother to take over the driving. She was a lot faster driving 55-60 mph. In the hay making season “Mum” would take morning tea out to the harvesters with one son on each running board: the closest to the gate

catch had to jump off and open it, the other would close it on the way back. In 1955 their mother parked up the old ‘32 coupe and went in and purchased a new Morris Oxford Series 2 and much to the disgust of the car dealer, did not trade in the old Ford coupe. We believe the car dealer had some mates who were keen to make a jalopy out of it.

leads. The year was 1964, Grahame and John left around 3.30pm to make the Aramoana which sailed around 6pm. In those days it was after 10pm when they would get there. To get to the boat, as you still have to do these days, they headed off down the steep and winding Ngauranga gorge into Wellington with a horse float on the back. I’m sure the road was not a multilane motorway as it is today. The steep incline necessitated chopping down into second gear but it kept popping out of gear. In the end Grahame used his knee to hold it in. The old coupe was equipped with rod brakes and these were almost to the floor, the hand brake also hard on as they were sliding down the hill at 45mph, smoke pouring off the brakes and a red traffic light coming up awfully quickly. With a lot of luck and the ‘grace of God’ somehow they managed to get it stopped. However when they moved onto the Hutt road there were no brakes at all and the drums were glowing red hot. After a cool-down period they came back: no trailer brakes in those days! All set for an all-night stint, they had a 12-gallon drum of fuel in the boot. All went good ‘til they got to the Kaikoura hills and the trusty V8 began to misfire. Grahame stood on the running board with the bonnet open while John drove slowly and they quickly isolated the arcing, which was cured with a couple of pieces of folded cardboard. The car ran better and better and those bits of cardboard were discovered still there in 2012. Around 1965 the gearbox was replaced with a 1934 unit and ran well for the next few years. The coupe stripped a fibre timing gear in 1968 showing 86,900 miles. Grahame pulled out the engine and had it fully reconditioned. When the engine came back it looked so nice that he

As the car came to be a bit of a ‘surplus to requirements’ vehicle so Grahame and his brother John used it a lot around the farm and broke the front spring: heck it never had shocks since the forties! The occasional Friday night even saw the old coupe outside a dance or a milkbar. Mum always made sure that the old car had rego on it.

The family started showing Clydesdale horses in the early sixties and got to know fellow horse enthusiasts, including the Lilleys of Barhill near Methven who were breeding Hackney ponies. At one stage it was decided to take a mare and a foal to Methven. Just attach a horse float to the old coupe, load in a couple of horses and away we go. The old Ford was given a birthday with a new set of spark plug

The boat ticket for the A sixties Aramoana sailing was still in the glovebox.

A shot from Grahame’s family photo album shows the coupe in the ‘60s with a couple of working dogs on the roof! How’s that!

The leaky original screen was eventually replaced with a Claytonrite rubber aftermarket item until Craig Stare located this original for Grahame. And yes it also leaks again!
Ford’s first assembly plant was this nine story building at 89 Courtney place in Wellington and it still stands today. The cars (including Grahame’s) arrived knocked-down in crates of parts on the top floor and eventually the completed car arrived on the ground floor ready to drive away.
The last (1967-68) rego sticker before the car’s 40-plus year stint in storage.
was going to restore the car to match; kind of luckily this never happened. In 2012 Grahame’s daughter Karen was about to get married and her only wish was to have granddad’s old car driving at her wedding so she’s the one to really thank for its resurrection. After 43 years in storage Grahame pulled out the “freshly” rebuilt engine, (1968) installed it in the car and got it running. Sounds easy but it did make it to the wedding on time. It did have one problem when it backfired and broke a lug off the original and rare Detroit lubricator carby. Luckily most flathead V8 carbs bolt on and eventually a friend located a parts carb at an Australian swapmeet to enable the original carb to go back on. Since the wedding the 1932 gearbox was rebuilt twice. The first time the new layshaft was undersized and leaked oil badly. This was cured and now has the correct gearbox in it as well. The photos show that this car is amazingly complete, including rare glovebox lid, its inner compartment and ashtray. Another interesting thing is that it has a cigarette lighter with a red light in the middle of it compared to the majority produced in green.
The original 1932 Ford key by Hurd supplied when new!
The only real changes are the addition of indicators for safety sake now that it is back on the road, legally on its original plates. At some point in its life the coupe had had a “caravan” style front screen installed in it but luckily I found a good original one for it thanks to Andrew Searby in Christchurch which really is the finishing touch. Grahame told me that at the time he got the screen I’d told him that after its installation it would have two new features. He said I was right, it now has wind noise and it leaks a bit! Perfect predictions! Part of the windscreen deal was that when the time was right, and the car was legal that I could share the story with our readers. The location has not been disclosed but the coupe has been to a lot of events in the past couple of years so it is far from hidden, but if you see it don’t ask that dumb question: it is NOT FOR SALE. There is no interpretation, substitution or restoration of this deuce. It’s 100% original and likely the only surviving original right-hand drive, Canadianbuilt 1932 Ford 3-window coupe left in the world. It’s the quintessential deuce coupe as Henry built it. Thank you Grahame Cottle so much for sharing this amazing piece of history with us.

Auckland Invasion
Masterton Motorplex: 13-14 February, 2016
Here’s a shot of Brad Langford who overcame local Shona Mendoza on the way to a 7.88/177. A great result after a technical hitch put him out early at the previous meeting.

THE Wairarapa weather turned it on and New Zealand’s newest dragstrip provided plenty of bite for racers leading to some personal bests and record runs. The usual relaxed but highly organised vibe permeated the place and the event ran like clockwork with no major incidents spoiling the fun. With 143 entries there was plenty of variety for spectators and lots of long smoky burnouts had them regularly on their feet. Heading the northern invasion the Mount Shop crew had their injected nitro dragster in top tune with Anthony Marsh taking both ends of the track record on the way to winning in Top Alcohol. A second round run in eliminations saw a mid- five second pass at 261 mph, which was the fastest terminal speed for the new track while overcoming 7 0 > N Z H OT RO D A P R I L 2 0 1 6
Anthony Marsh doing a burnout prior to breaking the speed record at Masterton with a mid-5 at 261 mph.
Shane Lodge shut off early in the final against Marsh after some strong passes earlier in the day.
Here’s a shot of Barry Plumpton who just scraped in ahead of Trevor Smith in a super-close Doorslammer final.
Burt King looked good early on but lost in the first round to Anthony Marsh.
Doran Anderson hauled his ‘68 Barracuda down from Auckland and performed well before losing in Round 4 to eventual runner-up Shona Mendoza;
Shane Eastham scored points with the crowd through wheelstands like this and still ran right on his dial-in of 10.61 all day.
Matt Gibbons has been racing this super cool ‘68 Hemi Dart for 30 years and still does the business with low 10-second passes.
the challenge of Chris Johnston. In the final the Marsh team ran a 5.52 at 257 to take the ET record home as well, while Shane Lodge was forced to shut off early in the other lane. A smaller field in Supercharged Outlaws was further reduced by breakages and fouls leading to the final between John Shepherd’s FED and Mark Gapp’s ‘41 Willys. Shepherd was away quickly with a .152 light and had two-tenths
of a second margin at the stripe. Among other highlights, perennial winner Ian Hilder did it again in Comp Bike and Barry Plumpton won a nail-biter in Doorslammer with a superior reaction time and a 6.61 to Trevor Smith’s 6.69 after both had performed mid-track burnouts. Large fields in Super Street, Super Sedan and Junior Dragster provided plenty of promise for the future.

LEADFOOT organisers hit the bulls-eye yet again with an eclectic mix of Kiwi race celebs, race cars and spectacular entertainment from full-on drift cars on a unique backdrop of Rod & Shelly Millen’s private 150-acre Leadfoot Ranch. In the normal world you’d have to attend ten individual events to witness the uniqueness of what the Leadfoot Festival has in just one event. Testament to that was record crowds (14000 over 2 days) thronged to soak up the Leadfoot experience.
