PODIUM Patriotism THE debate raging over the changing of our NZ flag is now extinguished, or at least for the time being. The mainstream media managed to beat this emotive and controversial topic to a stiff froth and like me you’re now over it. It did conjure up some spurious thoughts in my mind on event marketing and one light bulb which went on was a concept of staging an event dubbed Kiwiana, as a foil to the successful Americarna event held in the ‘naki. Here’s a taste of how it could be formatted. We could celebrate our Kiwi hot rod culture with the inclusion of anything street legal which is older than 1972. Displays could include Kiwi inventions, style, fashion, and other spheres which are iconic and planks to our culture. I noticed the CRC Speedshow has a special display coming up at this year’s show which showcases NZ-manufactured cars and think it’s a superb idea and a step forward to celebrating our innovators. Wait a minute, there’s something here which feels a bit prickly about celebrating our heroes/innovators, can you feel it too? There’s a hint of that tall poppy
syndrome sneaking in here. Perhaps we love our innovation and number 8 wire mentality but don’t like to shout out too loud about someone who does well using it. If you ask me it’s weird and as unexplainable as UFOs! I recall that I spent a large part of my teenage years travelling to the USA on hot rod trips and as a result of those visits always had an American flag hanging in the corner of my bedroom. I revelled in the American car culture and soaked up every last drop of it. Old Glory hung there for years, moved with me from flat to flat and eventually gathered dust, but I often ask myself the question: why didn’t I choose to hang a NZ flag? I guess I’m just devoid of any patriotic psyche and think we need to do more in our school education system curriculums to promote patriotism. I’m no Dr Phil but perhaps it’s the catalyst which holds and drives high achievers on the podiums of success? The Americans seem to be able to do it with great success so why can’t we? Whatever the reasons or whys and wherefores I think we could and should do more to support New Zealand and the positives of our Kiwi culture and lifestyle. From the evidence seen on our streets I’d say many citizens of Europe, Asia and Australasia are choosing to make NZ their home these days so there must be something here which is
more attractive than the place they’ve come from, and they need a huge infusion of our culture and need to develop a sense of patriotism too. Any takers for starting Kiwiana? Perhaps run Americarna one year and Kiwiana the next? Who knows, these are just will-o’-the-wisp concepts which may or may not take root and eventually fly. It’d be worth a go though. On another note I’d like to say a special thanks to those who pointed out the error of our ways in the last issue. Your feedback is downright invaluable and we even heard of the editor of a competing publication picking up on our error and attempting to make gain from it but we can only thank him for reading our magazine and being part of that all-essential feedback loop. In our defence, we’re only human and to make amends have rightly fallen on our swords in Dept of Corrections. Check it out on our Letters page. Thanks to all who provided feedback on my editorial last month on Looking around the corner into the future, much appreciated and glad it was thought provoking to you. PG. Auckland East and ran an article on him. Wolf was a mechanical inventor of pure genius, from vast complexity down to small components. I recently came across a small jotting of his I’d stashed away. I doubt Wolf is still with us, but if any relative of his wishes to obtain this small relic of his work, they’re welcome to get in touch with me via this magazine.

BRUCE Jenkins’ fantastic photo in our March centrespread is a pure cracker, ccapturing the moment when w Anthony A Marsh’s Top M Fuel engine F turned to
marshmallow. Tony Marsh senior, his dad, agreed that pun was apt. There was nothing bloody left! Personally, the photo instantly brought back feelings of my first experience of nitro-burning beasts . . . This was during an early NZHRMorganised tour of USA drag racing. When a pair of Top Fuel rails came out, I felt the sound’s concussion waves hitting my torso, then gaped at spark plug tip embers sparking out the headers by half track. Dictionary explanation of nitromethane: Obtained from methane, used as a solvent to make synthetic resins, also as a rocket fuel . . . That says it all! RC.

LETTERS Department of corrections and retractions
HELLO Paul, I just purchased the May issue covering the Christchurch NZHRA show and I’d like to point out that I resigned from Nelson City Rod and Custom Club in July last year and joined Oceanside thereafter. I registered for the Christchurch Nationals under Oceanside and was surprised to see myself connected with NCRCC on the show program. At the prizegiving when I gratefully received the awards for my Willys Wagon I pointed out (again) the error. Now I see my BEST FLATHEAD award was for my ‘29A roadster pickup which is incorrect. The award is for the WILLYS LPG injected 8BA flathead. Although this is pretty trivial stuff, for the sake of accuracy could you please publish a retraction with the appropriate correct information.
Instead we have the same “has beens” who’ve been doing it since day dot. We don’t have that many shows each year! All entrants want their vehicles judged properly. A lot of people are new to the sport and unaware what parts have to be opened or closed and when it should be done. If this time is too long the car can look “goofy” for the public. If it wasn’t for fender exemptions we probably would not even need NZHRA and therefore no more raffles would be required for ‘band aids’ or ambulances at the bottom of the cliff. Most of the assets have been sold off without the members given a chance to give an opinion. As for that “black tie” event that emptied thousands out of the bank account, maybe next time we could have a T-shirts and thongs BBQ at Southwards or something similar! Name supplied, but withheld by request.
Best regards Mark Holdaway, Oceanside Street Rods.
Thanks for the heads-up Mark, much appreciated. Turns out the information supplied to us at the magazine was incorrect. We apologize for the published error. Ed.
Blooper WE owe a big apology to Bruce McKenzie for captioning his awardwinning ’41 Willys pickup as a ’41 Ford in May ’16 issue’s coverage of the Classic Cover Insurance National Show. You’d think we’d know better huh, and on a good day we do! We’re a bit shamefaced and are truly sorry Bruce, that particular typo slipped past us all.
Flashback Feedback TO the team at NZHRM. I read the story in May ’16 issue on Al Dawson’s 1934 Ford 5-window coupe (The Joker) and wondered if it’s Phil Hollingsworth’s coupe from Buller rodders in Westport is the same car. The lights, grille, back fenders suggest it could be. These photos were taken in 1981at the West Coast Rod Run. If it is, can someone fill in the 15 year gap between 1965 and 1980 or proof it’s a different coupe. Regards, Ty Hepburn, Dunedin.
The big picture HI TEAM, Had to put pen to paper and question what do the NZ Hot Rod Association really do for us. Went to the National rod show recently in Christchurch; great venue, big turnout of good cars inside and out in the carpark. My bug bear is the judging. Where were the professionals, the experts in their field? We have some of the best engineers, painters and trimmers in the country. Why weren’t they asked to see if they were interested in judging, many of them (including myself) would be prepared to give their time and expertise for the same food and drink supplied now. 6 > N Z H OT RO D J U N E 2 0 1 6

³ Rat Trap 50th Anniversary THERE’S a long tradition of successful American drag racers taking their cars on the ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe, beginning with legends of the sport Dean Moon and Mickey Thompson in 1963. More than fifty years later the tradition continues with the announcement that Ron Hope and the Rat Trap Racing team are beginning a 50th anniversary world tour. “The exciting news is that we are now going to Europe for three races.” said team owner Ron Hope. The first event at Santa Pod in England celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Pod. Then we go to Hockenheim in Germany, and then back to Santa Pod for the Euro Finals. Incidentally, Randy Bradford’s Fiat-bodied AA/Fuel Altered will join Rat Trap on the tour.” The Rat Trap racecar will also be displayed at the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame Gala, November 19, 2016 at Savill Court Hotel, Windsor Great Park, England. The three currently scheduled European Rat Trap events are: • Dragstalgia: July 15-17, Santa Pod Raceway, England. • Nitrolympics: August 19-21,Hockenheim, Germany. • Euro Finals: September 8-11,Santa Pod Raceway, England. “This is a terrific opportunity to mark fifty years of success, and to give even more fans a chance to experience the excitement of a bad-to-the bone fuelaltered,” added Hope. “Racing in front of the fans is what drives us to continue, and we’re grateful to all our sponsors for helping make this tour possible.” For the full, updated Rat Trap World Tour schedule, please visit: www.RatTrapRacing.com/schedule

³ Exported DOES anyone remember this ’34 Ford tudor? Noel Sutherland spotted it in Australia and found from the oil change decal in the door jamb it was originally sold by Rangiora Ford dealer Palmer & Doak and imported from Christchurch, NZ sometime in the past. NZ new RHD and still running original ’34 flatty and running gear. It’d be interesting to find its history.

Zealand’s Ultimate Shine 2016 Winner
³ Flashback GARDEN City Rodders have a new member who’s recently joined. Simon Wilson joined with a T-bucket he’s owned for around 32 years. Previous to that it was owned and built by another club member Andy Bruin and was powered by a blown 350 Chev. Simon bought it less engine and installed a 289 Ford. The car ar was featured in NZHRM Dec ‘86 page 5 and was photographed with a Xmas theme and a bunch of balloons. Simon was keen to put it in the National show in unfinished class. It was a real ‘flashback’ complete with the balloons, looking identical complete with a new chrome diff and a blower. From Craig Stare.
MEGUIAR’S have awarded the sought-after title of “New Zealand’s Ultimate Shine” for 2016 to Warren and Angela Sara’s 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. The objective of the Ultimate Shine Competition is to reward the car(s) which best represent the ULTIMATE SHINE, therefore it comes down to the reflection and shine seen on the cars in the photos. The ’57 Chevrolet Bel Air has a stunning body shape, and the photography captures the reflections of the surrounding environment beautifully: it really shows the depth of colour and wet look shine combining to give the best representation of what Meguiar’s is all about. Warren and Angela will certainly be able to keep the Bel Air in its Ultimate Shine condition after winning the top prize – giving them a lovely $600 cash bonus and a $500 Meguiar’s product pack.

³ So Cool Coupe BLAIR Christmas scored big time when he bought this ’38 Chev coupe from California via Chuck’s. When you open the door that aroma of old upholstery greets you. The body is sound and a great start for a very cool ride.
³ Mint Survivor GREG Haliday’s latest import via Mainstream is this deuce 5-window which was a barn find in Colorado. Incredibly it’s showing a mere 45,000 original miles. The gem is 100 percent original and complete with wind-up rear window and other options. The body has no rust ever and they’ve already got the 4-banger running! The paint has a very cool patina as the coupe was last painted back in the ‘40s! Greg plans to leave the body stock and paint as is but lower it onto a Duane Jones chassis featuring an old school 283 with retro blower and Hilborn fuel injection j with Rocket doing g the build.
³ Subtle DAVE Tuke just landed this classy resto-rod ’57 Bel Air from California via Chuck’s. It’s had a complete body-off restoration from a mint original car. It features a mild 350, 4-speed auto, rebuilt diff, new original interior, paint plus a completely upgraded suspension handling and braking package plus air con making perfect for driving on NZ roads and that’s exactly what Dave has planned.

The little guys From Magoo
BACK K in the September 2015 issue of NZHRM we profiled the history of Hop Up magazine. One thing the latest reincarnation has lost is the originall magazine’s ‘pocket’ size format. The article recounted how Petersen Publishing responded to o thee challenge of the wee magazine in 195 53 by launching HONK magazine in the 8” x 5” style, and while that publiicatiion only lasted five issues, the popularityy of the style – and reputably its abiilityy to be hidden in a school book – spaw wneed a host of similar sized magazines. Remember these were the years immediately post World War II and there was a market driven hunger for entertainment and performance information. The large format Hot Rod magazzinee was actually preceded by earlier publications like Throttle & Speed d Ag g , ge, which we’ll cover in a future article, but as interest in the new hobby of hot rodding grew, new magazines popped up. ‘Speed Mechanics’ started in 1953 also, and was followed by the long lasting ‘Rod & Custom’ (actually ‘Rods and Customs’ for the first issue only), along with ‘Sports Cars and Hot Rods’ and ‘Speed’ which covered boats & planes as well as cars.
Number 1 issues for both Custom Rodder & Rod Builder & Customizer.
A collection of Honk magazines. The May ’53 issue with Ronnie Gerhardt’s sweet 3-window on the cover is the rare 1st issue. I’ve seen these go for up to US$45.

This is the 10th anniversary issue of the Japanese ‘Burnout’ magazine. Captions and content are bi-lingual, but sometimes the translation is not 100% accurate – like the time they commented on ‘drug racing’ !
Car Craft’s first issue was December. It replaced ‘Honk’ after seven issues. Cover car was Harvey Bott’s ‘33 Ford coupe powered by a ‘48 Merc. Not a pretty car by today’s standards. (from Phil Powell collection)
‘Rodding & Restyling’ launched in 1955, ‘Rod Builder’ followed in July 1956 and was followed in January 1957 by ‘Northwest Rods’ (later changed name to ‘Northwest Rods & Sports Cars’ in an attempt to broaden its market) and ‘Hot Rod News’. Later that year ‘Custom Rodder’, ‘Custom Cars’ and ‘Car Speed and Style’ debuted also. Other titles included ‘Soup-Up’, ‘How’, and from the East Coast ‘How to HOP-UP your engine’ which is not to be confused with the aforementioned ‘Hop-Up’ magazine, nor the multitude of separate tech guides like ‘11 Budget Steps to Performance’ which were published as an off-shoot of ‘Custom Rodder’ and ‘Engine Hop-Up’ which stemmed from the mid-west’s Rodding & Restyling. Likewise Don Francisco authored several technical handbooks magazines for Hot Rod Magazine. ‘Rods Illustrated’ and ‘Customs Illustrated’ both came out mid-1958. From there publishers changed to the larger format publication as the little books were dwarfed on the magazine stands in bookshops - and proved to be too prone to shoplifters, or so the story goes… To survive, Rod & Custom changed to the larger format in August 1961, some six years after Robert Petersen had purchased the title from Quinn Publishing for a nominal sum. In more recent years the ‘little guy’ format has regained popularity, and internationally as well. New niche titles have popped up in the USA, but from Japan we now have ‘Burnout’ and ‘Ignite’, Australia has ‘Chopped’, France gave us ‘Continental Restyling’, ‘Rolls & Pleats’ from Belgium (and briefly from France) was a good value publication while it lasted, there is ‘Lowbrow’ from Sweden, and even Germany has been in the market with Smoking Shutdown - albeit slightly different in style. ‘The Lot’ adopted a different style of marketing; limited edition runs of 100 copies, with each hand numbered and signed by the author. Other more recent versions have been ‘Hot Rods Illustrated’ and ‘Shop Rag’. New Zealand has its players too; NZ Rodder started in the small format, One Percent was a brief entry, then gone, and Jamming Gears led by Auckland rodders Paul Servantie, Bernie Beckett and Ken Logan continues today.

I still remember as a kid being given a copy each of Rod & Custom and Rod Builder & Customiser. They were well thumbed through by the time I got them, but obviously some of the titles mu ust have been available in NZ book ksh hops. They certainlyy helped plant a seeed of interest st in the hobby for me. My colleection incorporates 30 differeent titles, and a d there aree mo ore I’d like to collecct. A couple of very rare r ones o are ‘Norrthweest Rods’ an nd ‘Cars an nd Clubs’ which were both short liived publicaations in the late 19 950s. They o occasio onally pop up p on eB Bay for US $60 – such iss the demand for the hese collectables. The little m magazines are an impo ortant paart of hot rodding history and sserve to illustrate the formative yearss of our hobby so are worth colleecting. Lo ocally they periodically pop up on o Trade Me in the $15-$25 range – not a bad investment ttmentt ffor something thi that sold for US25c sixty years ago!

Chopped (again issue 1 shown) was produced by Ryan Ford, son of longtime Australian hot rodder & publisher, Eddie Ford.
This sampling of Rod & Custom magazines includes the December 1953 issue from the first year of publication.
Rods and aan Customs: Very rare number 1 issue from May ‘53. ‘5 ‘53 It replaced Hop Up and was renamed Rod aand Custom from the second issue onwards. The ccov cover car was Chuck Price’s ‘32 Ford roadster powered pow wered by Evans equipped flathead V8.

American Car Day Stars and Stripes Down Under
By Jenny Gower
AMER R IC CAN A Car Da Dayy re real ally l doe oessn’t ’ nee ’t eed explaining. After all,, Ameericaa and the h irr his isto toryy with the car has always been a match h mad de in heaven. This well-oiled event sho ows w its worth each year with the sheer numbers of vehicles in attendance and the number of spectators who flock to the track. It’s held at Trentham, Wellington and for those familiar with the racetrack you know how much space is there. This year was super bussy as areas of the track not usually used were needed to house all the entrants. All the car clubs have their designated areas but as the clubs grow so does the need for space. It was interesting to note that non-American vehicles were made to park in a separate area, as the name suggests “American Car Day” and event organisers obviously mean what they say. It seems that to love or own a piece of American n history is not left just to the Bogans these days. There’s a great love of things retro and when combined with the need to hang onto what’s left of the true V8 era, as the modern V8s continue to decline in numbers with the pressures of technology and fuel savings, it appears that people from all walks of life are drawn to the American vehicles of the past. 2 2 > N Z H OT RO D J U N E 2 0 1 6

FAREWELL
Bryce Wilkinson 1953-2016 A will to excel IT’S was sad news to hear well known Hamilton rodder and brilliant engineer, Bryce Wilkinson died peacefully on Tuesday 19th April aged 63 years. Bryce’s farewell function on Saturday, 23 April in Hamilton was well attended following a memorial drive around the Hamilton area passing or briefly stopping at significant places in Bryce’s life followed by a generous function at Rocket Speed Equipment where Bryce worked for a time. Back in the day Bryce made quite an impact on the NZ hot rod scene in the mid ‘70s with his Stormbringer T-bucket powered by blown 396 big block Chev which was featured with pinup in NZHRM’s March 1977 issue. It garnered a hatful of trophies from shows and was considered to be “the next level” in hot rodding by his peers. Later it was rebuilt to an even higher standard and featured a flip-up body, tube frame and custom psychedelic paint scheme by longtime friend and artist Warren Houston. His passion for street and racing led him to go on to build a full boogie ’27 T roadster with a blown 427 Chev which made the cover of and was featured in April ’87 NZHRM. He went on to start Comet Motorcycles where he designed a system to convert Harley Davidson bikes into trikes which also featured a reverse gear and he completed half a dozen conversions. It was fitting that his rodding mates created a special custom one-off ‘34 roadster casket for his last ride around Hamilton and he’ll long be remembered as a quintessential engineer and very good friend and family man. 2 4 > N Z H OT RO D J U N E 2 0 1 6

the region and also a biggie for car meetings. Gear Jammers started in 2008 with a small group of like minded car enthusiasts meeting at Otaihanga domain and has grown into a 70-plus membership located in Waikanae and with memberships from Hamilton to Pahiatua and Palmerston North.
Every year a core bunch of regulars from local clubs are topped off by visitors from farther afield. It’s a day when projects which have been in garages for years emerge for the first time. in the ‘30s which debuted at the show. Other classes included Best Ford, Mopar, Chev, Special Interest and People’s Choice. With 250-plus cars rolling in and out all day there is always something new and this year‘s festival included a ‘50s-period dress show and competition with a special class for juniors. It was by far the most dressed-up event I’ve been to in the region: the amount of people including kids who sported the ‘50s or Rockabilly attire was awesome. To ensure a great family day the club ensures children are entertained
with fire engine rides and bouncy castles, face painting and temporary tattoos. The show is also supported by stands including GJ member “The Fonz”, master pinstriper, air brush artists, vintage clothing shops for the girls, and food stalls. Local band “Now and Then” are a regular appearance along with the drag race cars which pull in crowd clusters with spectacular “fire ups” demonstrating horsepower and noise. Muzz (GJ President) says the Jammers are very grateful for the
support of the wider car community and the local visitors. “If they don’t show up there’d be nothing to see and we rely on that every year.” From my perspective it was a well oiled machine that was entertaining from start to end; it was seamless and Gear Jammers can be proud of themselves for all the work it must take to pull it off. The club members were very present and approached everyone to chat and say thanks for coming which was a great touch. Keep it on the calendar for next year, it’s worth it. > 27

Following the successful running of the Classic Cover National Hot Rod Show held in Christchurch over Easter weekend (see coverage in May issue) it was time to load up our car and return home to Dunedin before heading to the Pre 49s in Omarama. Time slipped away after I got home and I didn’t leave until 7.30pm: I was not going to make the opening dinner! When I arrived at the Heritage Hotel which was event HQ most entrants had already retired to their rooms for the evening. I had a quick scout around the carpark at the hot rods then headed to Murray and Sharon Stuart’s place for my bed ed. Tuesday morning was breakfast followed wed by a rod run under perfect clear blue skies around the Benmore and Aviem iemore dams and then back to Murray ray Stuart’s S for lunch. I stayed behind ehind and a gave Murray a hand at his place where he has a great setup which includes a new bar, dirt race track and a large barn workshop for rodders to check out.
Classic NZ south island scenery and quintessential hot rods were the backbone of this year’s event. RB.
Wednesday’s itinerary saw us cruising on a day run to Wanaka and Cromwell followed by a drive through the spectacular Lindis Pass and checked out a couple of car museums before lunch. Then it was on to Highlands Park racetrack to visit their museum and some took to the track for a couple of laps in their hot rods. I headed back to Omarama but the hall had already been set up by helpers Dave and Marie Rogers and Brian Ward. The meal was provided by the school and was followed by prizegiving. On that note all the meals and breakfast, most of which were at the Heritage Hotel were first class. Thursday was a final breakfast and fond farewells.

Wanganui Street Drags 30th Anniversary of legal street racing
From Jenny Gower
30 Years is a long time to be doing something, especially when you do it well and that’s what the Wanganui Road Rodders have achieved: congratulations to them. Having attended the last few meetings myself I can say they are run well, with a mix of some pretty tough street cars alongside the daily drivers, all providing an excellent spectacle for the crowd. Over 60 street cars, 10 modifieds and 4 bikes attended and maybe it being the 30th or being held on a Saturday for a change but it pulled in more spectators too. Tristan Teki, current club president was very happy with how the day unfolded and given the threat of rain loomed overhead, it held off and 4 0 > N Z H OT RO D J U N E 2 0 1 6
there were no major hold-ups. One to mention however was Todd Hall in his very tough and quick Mustang which ended up looking back at the start line after losing control of the car at the finish line and hitting the curb on the opposite side of the track, popping a ball joint and ending his day. Thankfully he is okay and the car only suffered minor damage. As usual at lunchtime, the crowd was provided with entertainment by a number of demonstration passes from some of the quicker cars in the club, obviously not competing in the day’s events. Tristan also smoked a few people out in his Monaro with some massive burnouts, which seemed to get everyone on their feet. The burnouts didn’t end there
with many a smoke screen put up by contestants warming up pre-staging. Over the 30 years there will no doubt have been some stories to be told: the feeling is this year has been the best one yet and possibly the worst was when the event got rained out, yet the club took in the same funds over the bar that day as they would have running the drags. The club would like to thank all of their sponsors, of which there are so many: without them it wouldn’t be the same. WE’VE all heard of the saying “if you can’t beat them, join them”. Nothing could be more so for Myra Gardiner about 30-odd years back, when she realised her husband Ewan had won and decided it was

best to join in his car fun and get some cars “I liked as well”. These cars included a Mk 1 Zephyr convertible with a Mk 3 engine trans and diff, a ‘33 Ford pickup sourced via Kiwi Steve, and then recently this ‘35 pictured here. Actually this roadster project started
as a partly rodded 4-door sedan of which the body was replaced with the roadster body and rear fenders. This was carried out by Scott Purcell who got the nod for all the panelwork and alignment. Graeme McNeill from Macs Speed was commissioned to do a lot of the
fabrication work, which started with the chassis being a boxed original but with the addition of a K member incorporating a driveshaft loop. A disc-braked Falcon diff was fitted using a pair of leaf springs to hold up the 15” Vintique solid rims which are fitted to the front discs as well. The discs are actuated by
a Falcon booster and master cylinder. Holding those discs is a Heidts front end from the states with power rack and pinion steering, making it a very user friendly car to drive. Up front sits a reasonably stock (apart from fuellie heads) 300 horse 350 Chev with blockhugger headers into a 2-1/2” exhaust

system with triple chamber mufflers all carried out by Macs. A turbo 350 auto connects it all together. After the body was put back on the chassis it was sent to Clint Davies of Elite in Tauranga to be painted a custom blue Hyundai colour, and Elite then did the final alignment of all the panels. Bucket seats on Glide Engineering rails adorn the interior of the roadster with vinyl door panels and black carpets by Richard Howe who also made up stainless steel hood bows and upholstered the cool looking top. All the workings of the car are kept under watchful eyes with Classic instruments which were wired with a Painless wiring kit, but you’ll notice the almost stock dash has the glovebox filled plus there’s a heater for cold Hawkes Bay winters. All in all the car only took about 18 months to build, so it was on the road and driving so that Myra, who’s a member of Early Irons, could get out and about driving her own car without having to hitch a ride with Ewan in his ‘32. Obviously there is always someone to thank for these projects and these not only include Ewan, but the previously mentioned Clint Davies and of course Graeme McNeill of Macs Speed.

FLASHBACK
Car Buyers & Wreckers Wilson Motor Supplies Ltd
Wilson Motor Supplies - Karamu Road, Hastings – May ’67.
By Al Dawson
IN THE early years the wrecking yard with a million parts was Car Buyers & Wreckers - Wilson Motor Supplies Ltd. It was a veritable hot rod heaven and the go-to place for Hawkes Bay hot rodders. The original Car Buyers & Wreckers was established by Clem Alexander in 1936. Brett Wilson’s uncle, Bob Wilson bought the yard off Clem in the early ‘50s and the whole operation was moved over the road. It later became Wilson Motor Supplies Ltd. Wilsons owned the whole block a d sold off land to Motor Specialities and other firms. an Brett took over the business from his uncle Bob in Br 1967 7 while he was still a teenager. His father Jim came into thee business with him as Brett was not yet 21. Many local al car guys and hot rodders worked at the yard from om time to tim ime, most notably Henry ‘Hoss’ Horne. Henry did hi hiss apprentice ceship for Clem Alexander at the original Car Buye yers & Wreck cker e s and when Bob Wilson took over the wrecki king n yard in the h ‘50s he inherited Henry Horne 4 8 > N Z H OT RO D J U N E 2 0 1 6
with it. Henry drove the tow trucks and cranes far and wide picking up wrecks. He lived and breathed V8s, and was always there to help build up hot rod motors. Henry would often talk of the brand new ‘32 Ford roadster body that sat suspended in the loft of the original wreckers building. It came from John Peach Ford dealership in Hastings, and back then there was little demand as most people wanted a sedan so no one bought the roadster body. It was winched up on ropes and sat there for years. Henry said, when Percy & Henderson took over the building and Clem Alexander moved Car Buyers & Wreckers over the road the mint deuce roadster body was dropped into the concrete inspection pit along with many new Model A and T fenders and V8 parts.

Percy & Hend nderson filled in the pit and laid a con ncr c ete floor over it. The ‘32 roadster bod odyy is still buried under the original shop p floor. During the ‘60s, the wreeck c ing yard had just about everythiing a hot rodder could ask for: ‘39 Fo ord r hydraulic brakes, ‘39 gearboxes, ‘46/‘48 Merc mills, whatever you wanted it was there for a few pounds. Wheeling and dealing in ‘28-‘48 Fords, there was an endless supply of early and NOS parts. In the yard you could find single and twin spinners, Customlines, Chevs and Studebakers, etc. At one time Brett had 11 hot rods at the yard and more around the back at home in various stages of completion. Some chopped, some channelled and lots of early Ford bodies and partially built rods, including roadsters, ‘34 bu seda dans n , and a ‘32 Vicky. Looking back, Brett sa says y , “It was unreal, we just didn’t reaali lise what treasures we had.” > 49

Typical rod gathering at the wreckers.
As well as specialising in tow trucks, forklifts and cranes, the business sold many wooden crate motors. Most were flathead Ford V8s made up of a combination of ex Bren-gun carrier motors, and factory ported and relieved C21A and C59A ex-NZ army motors. In 1969, Wilson’s Motor Supplies moved back to the original site where Clem Alexander had started the business in 1936. In the ‘70s, Brett wound down the wrecking yard side of the firm. Wilson’s took over the Valhala nightclub corner on Karamu Road and it became the speed shop home to Brett’s Cobra-Jet powered Ford Falcon Futura ‘Charmer’, his C/ Gas 428 Mustang, and his ‘Spirit of NZ’ Funny Car. The business continued up until 1984.

NOT so many years ago, picking an ignition system for your hot rod was pretty simple. If the factory offered a dual-point distributor that was pretty much Nirvana. And if they didn’t, the aftermarket soon complied with a variety of dual point kits. The odd guy would venture out with a magneto, but those things tended to be finicky and they were expensive. Some of those old hot rod ignition systems were good. Some weren’t. But today, it’s a far different story. There’s considerable choice when it comes to firing the spark. You go all the way up to a system which rivals an arc welder in terms
5 2 > N Z H OT RO D J U N E 2 0 1 6
of firepower. On the other hand, something suited to a Pro Mod, Top Sportsman or Pro Stock drag car isn’t exactly necessary on a street driven hot rod – even one which might venture out to the drag strip on occasion. The other consideration for most hot rods is packaging. Honestly, something like a Model A or a ’32 Ford doesn’t have a lot of available space for a big honking ignition box or coil. Most folks tuck them under the dash, and when you measure one of those cars, you’ll soon find that once the gauges are installed and if you have a radio, most of the available real estate is gone. The other issue with ignition systems is heat. A modern system can generate
quite a bit of it, and to be safe, it should have room for air to flow over it. Fair enough, but what are your options? From this perspective, a really good choice is MSD’s newest (revised) 6AL-2 (MSD P/N 6421). This isn’t the 6AL box of old. It’s an all-new ignition system which combines new cast aluminium housing, new digital controls and more power in what amounts to a much more compact package. The spark output of the new capacitive discharge box has been turned up to 535 volts of primary voltage with spark energy reaching up to 135 millijoules. The 6AL-2 still maintains MSD proven multiple spark concepts. Here, the control box fires the respective spark plug for 20 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Included is an advanced micro-controller which manages the built-in two-step rev-limiter -- one for high-end over-rev protection and another you can activate off a switch. The real purpose of the second rev limit is for low RPM activation. Drag racers use a switch on the clutch pedal, foot brake pedal or transmission brake to engage a “low side” launch limit on the ignition box. That means they can consistently leave the starting line at a pre-determined (low) RPM. Once the switch is released, the Rev Limiter reverts to the high side. The two-step rev limit feature might not have a lot of uses in a street car, but we’re sure a few hot rodders who venture out to the drag strip can put it to use. In operation, MSD’s Soft Touch rev limit circuitry provides a smooth and accurate rev limit by dropping the spark to individual cylinders. MSD notes that the Soft Touch produces a load-free rev limit which is within 1% of the selected rpm. There is no longer a need for plugin chips. Adjustments are made by way of four rotary dials to allow for 100-rpm increment control of the limiter (see the photos for a closer look). Finally, the new 6AL-2 can easily hook up to almost
While there are a lot of ignition systems available today, the latest MSD 6AL-2 likely suits 95% of all hot rod applications. Although it’s a relatively new model, it incorporates tried and true technology developed over the years by the folks at MSD.
The 6AL-2 is a (current) major revision of the original 6-series, which made its debut many years ago. That’s not to say it is lacking in features. Instead, it’s loaded with technology. See the following photos as well as the text for more details.
One place where the 6AL-2 has changed is the size. It’s now very compact (barely reaching 7-inches in length), as shown here. The actual case is a very nice (and robust) casting.
On the wiring harness side of the ignition box, you can see the five removable rubber plugs. Beneath each plug is a rotary dial. As you can see, the first two are for the builtin two-step; the second pair is for the maximum RPM limit and the last is the cylinder selector. MSD even includes a little screwdriver so you can easily set the limits.
any 12-volt negative ground distributor. As noted above, the new 6AL-2 is based upon a capacitive discharge ignition design. The 6AL-2-capacitor system is quickly charged with 520-535 volts and stores it until the ignition is triggered. The voltage sent to the coil is always at full power even at high rpm. Most OEM ignition systems are inductive ignitions. MSD points out that in an inductive ignition, the coil must store and step up the voltage to maximum strength in between each firing. As the engine speed increases there is less and less time to charge the coil to full capacity. Because of this, the voltage falls short of reaching maximum energy, which in turn, results in a loss of power. (or the car might experience a top end miss) Below 3,000 RPM, the MSD system produces full power multiple sparks
for each firing of a plug. The number of multiple sparks decreases as rpm increases, however the spark series always lasts for 20° of crankshaft rotation. Above 3,000 rpm there is simply insufficient time to fire the spark plug more than once, so there is only one high-energy spark produced. Inside, the MSD 6AL-2 incorporates a high speed RISC microcontroller to manage ignition output. What’s “RISC”? Simple. MSD tells us this is an acronym for “Reduced Instruction Set Computing”. The “reduced” part of the equation actually means the amount of work any single instruction accomplishes is reduced – not the capacity of the controller. These are in fact, sophisticated high-speed devices. The controller constantly analyses the various inputs such as supply voltage, trigger
signals and rpm. It can make extremely quick compensations to the output voltage, multiple spark series, timing and rpm limits and at the same time, maintain accurate timing signals to within 1 degree and 1% of the rpm limits. MSD points out the circuits and controller of the 6AL-2 have been thoroughly filtered to create protection against Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI). MSD’s 6AL-2 ignition box will operate on any negative ground, 12-volt electrical system triggered by way of a distributor (more on triggering next issue). The 6AL-2 can be used with 16-volt batteries and can withstand a momentary 24-volts (should you need a jump start). The ignition system will deliver full voltage with a battery supply of 9-18 volts and will operate with a supply voltage as low as 7-volts. MSD

This is the LED status indicator we discussed in the text. Basically it tells you if everything is working correctly or if there is an issue within the system or if there is a charging problem.
Included is a 60-inch long trigger cable. It’s designed to plug right into a matching MSD magnetic pickup distributor. We’ll take a closer look at the distributor in the next issue.
advises that should your application run sans alternator, allow at least 15 amp/hour of battery power for every half hour of operation. The MSD uses approximately .9 Amps for every 1,000 RPM. If the engine is cranked with the same battery or other accessories such as an electric fuel pump or fan are used, the amp/hour rating should be higher. The MSD 6AL-2-ignition system can be used with most stock coils and most aftermarket coils designed to replace the stock coils. MSD’s Blaster Coils, PN 8202, PN 8207 as well as PN 8222 are perfect for street and mild racing.
For extended high rpm operation MSD recommends the use of a Blaster HVC, PN 8252 or HVC II, PN 8253 coil. We’ll dig deeper into coils next issue. In terms of spark plug gap, MSD recommendations are based upon final engine compression ratio. Gaps should be as follows: • Up to 10.5:1 compression ratio: 0.035” - 0.045” • 10.5:1 - 13.0:1 compression ratio: 0.030” - 0.035” • Above 13.0:1 compression ratio: 0.025” - 0.030”
The 6AL-2 is manufactured with a built-in troubleshooting LED on the side of the control box. When functioning properly, the LED will appear to be on steady (no flashing) above idle speeds. When the LED flashes, this may be an indication something is wrong with the ignition system. According to MSD, this is what the flashing sequences mean: Flashes once per second if the battery supply voltage is low when under 3,000 RPM (while multi-sparking). This indicates a charging issue or a poor connection. It will also flash approximately once per second if the battery input voltage exceeds 28 volts for a sustained duration. The LED will also flash for every trigger signal from the distributor or the crank trigger. In terms of footprint, the new 6AL2 measures a mere 7” x 4” x 2”. The box weighs approximately 840 grams (1.85 pounds). It can be mounted in any direction, but it’s best to set it up so you have access to the digital Rev Limit controls (they’re set with a screwdriver and MSD even supplies it). Mounting cushions (four of them) are included along with mount hardware and lengthy wire leads. The actual wiring is straightforward, and MSD even includes a wiring diagram on the backside of the ignition box (see the accompanying photos). As you can see, MSD has you covered with a street friendly, high-powered, yet very compact ignition system. In our next issue, we’ll take a close look at a couple of MSD’s recommended coils along with one of their very tidy billet distributors. Watch for it. It’s a good way to light your hot rod’s fire!

The wiring instructions are laid out on the back of the ignition box. As you can see, not all wires are used. Several wires are in place for various different triggers (points, magnetic pickup, hall effect).

Graham White’s 1957 Chevrolet Nomad

By Craig Stare
THE tri-five Chevrolets were some of the prettiest vehicles ever designed by GM, and certainly lend themselves to a total body restoration. While on one of their trips to the States Graham White and Frances were visiting friends Jim and Lynn Livingston at Woodburn drag strip just south of Portland. They were looking for particular cars to fill clients’ orders and just purchased a ‘57 Chev 4-door hardtop. They began talking to the son-in-law of the owner who told them the car was part of an estate, the man who owned eight 1957 Chevrolets including a convertible, Nomad, a drag car and a pickup when he unfortunately passed away. He suggested they should buy the rest
6 4 > N Z H OT RO D J U N E 2 0 1 6
of the collection. A decision was made to try and package the 4-door hardtop and the Nomad together. A price was agreed on and once again Graham called his friend Mike Ingman to get the cars transported to LA. Having told the guy they were sending the cars to New Zealand things went sideways! It’s suspected the widow didn’t want her husband’s cars going overseas: this does happen sometimes and when it does it can be quite nasty. All communication ceased! Luckily no money had changed hands so they resigned themselves that that deal was ‘dead in the water’. Not so after explaining the situation over a few beers with Jim he promptly said he’d be more than happy to broker the deal. Although he’s now retired
Jim is all business and he started making calls. He got hold of the seller through his drag racing contacts, made the deal and bought two cars, just like that. Jim is an absolute legend in the North West drag racing scene. After the cars came back the 4-door was vinned and despatched to its new owner, Trevor who has a growing collection in Arrowtown. The Nomad is painted a dark Plum Cherry (or black cherry) which looks black in the shade and very classy with the sun on it. The crossply wide-whites were removed to give the car some normal driving characteristics and were replaced by 18”x8” and 18”x9” Ridler wheels which really set off the colour. There wasn’t too much drama to put the car on the road as it’s actually
bone stock with 283, Powerglide, power steer and power brakes. The Nomad was fully restored by its late owner, as were all his cars. He had Parkinsons and had
the belief that working on cars helped him greatly and kept him going well into his seventies. The stainless is restored, and it features a custom mauve fabric interior.
The car made its ďŹ rst long trip from Invercargill through to the Kaikoura Hop with no problems. Keep an eye out for this car as it may just be for sale.

Nostalgia Drags 2016 Brought to you by Penske Commercial Vehicles
Thirteen front engine rails arranged in line from shortest to the longest. NZHRM photographer Siggy rode around them on a bike videoing them on his mobile phone then immediately loaded the clip to Facebook. Such is the interest in FEDs that by the end of April the video had been shared more than 2,000 times and viewed 85,000 times. BT.
From Golly, Bruce Taylor, Siggy, Mike Ashton and Paul Grace
THIS year’s Nostalgia Drags went off without a hitch and provided plenty of action for old-time racing enthusiasts and purveyors of ingenious mechanical contraptions. Time waited for no one but many went away smiling having reaped the rewards of their activities or been witness to the mayhem we all love. Hats off to Bay Rodders, sponsors, competitors, crew and track staff for putting on a fantastic show for fans. 6 6 > N Z H OT RO D J U N E 2 0 1 6

Burnout Bliss Port Rd Drags 2016
From Jenny Gower
ALWAYS an iconic event, Port Rd Drags is a must-do on the calendar for many racers and rodders. It’s one of the few opportunities to drag race on the street without being on the wrong side of the law. Each year attracts the regulars who race and who watch, but it’s also a drawcard for many new faces. Cam County run the event like a well oiled machine: they’ve been
7 0 > N Z H OT RO D J U N E 2 0 1 6
doing it so long now they could probably do it blindfolded. Safety is top priority followed closely by speed, adrenaline, noise and tyre smoke. A name synonymous with drag racing in NZ, Darren Ritches topped fastest time with 6.57 in his Ford Pop. There’s a safety limit to 6.5 with street drags so when Aaron Jackson and his Torana ran a 6.3 he was disqualified and came in as second fastest on the day with 6.949. In the same order these two
took out 1st and 2nd in Class 1. This is no easy task when these guys pull 9s on the ¼-mile strip, the art is going as close to 6.5 without running over: if you do it twice you can’t run again. Class 2 was won by Steve Walsh with a 7.51 over Paul Preebie who ran a 7.27 but Steve won on reaction time. 1st in Class 3 was Marcus Wilson with an 8.217 followed by Gavin Toombs’ Mustang doing 8.378. Class 4 saw Dave Fishwick’s Valiant
go 8.97 for the win and 2nd was Taylor Jones who ran a 9.01. Last but definitely not least was Class 5 with Scott Mcleod running a 10.22 to come 1st followed by John D’s Galaxie with a 10.5. Entertainment also came in the form of drag bikes and the Junior dragsters. Only a few hiccups and delays over the day. This year was the 49th, which miraculously also means it was the 49th Port Rd Drags with perfect weather. Next year is the 50th and it will be a huge weekend: you need to be early to enter to race as it fills up quickly. Mark it on your calendar as it’s definitely worth being in Wellington for.
