Shoes To Mule Over

In the words of the mighty Chris Martin: ‘Look at the shoes, look how they shine for you, and everything you do, yeah they were all yellow’. OK, so we may have ad-libbed that one but for mules this stunning who wouldn’t break into song? We wonder if Zara ever tires of nailing it…

Not to be dramatic or anything, but I think my heart actually stopped beating when I locked eyes on this wonder frock. If that doesn’t demonstrate how much I love it, nothing will. I won’t bore you with talk of off-the-shoulder necklines being in – you already know that – but what I will say is this dress is worth every penny based on guaranteed compliments alone. Weddings, BBQs, the pub – it’ll nail any dress code with just a change of your shoes. An outfit in one, this midi will make getting ready less of a stress – and we all know those extra minutes in bed are SO important.

Monsoon’s Royal Hook-Up Daniella Helayel is the woman behind one of the most famous dresses of the past decade and now she’s turned her talents to the high street

W

hen Kate Middleton announced her engagement wearing a blue Issa dress, it sold out in mere moments and bargain copies were available on eBay faster than you could say, ÔDuchessÕ. Of course, it wasnÕt just K-Middy who was a fan of the label; Eva Mendes, Naomi Campbell, Katy Perry and Nicole Richie (to name but a few) were all unofficial Issa Kate ambassadors. Actually, Middleton Daniella Helayel, who founded the brand, has more celeb friends than Elton John (no mean feat) thanks to her flattering cuts and feminine silhouettes. After leaving the label in 2013, weÕve waited patiently to see what Daniella will do next Ð and it just happens to be a brandnew high-street collection. Yep, Monsoon has bagged the designer for a new 14-piece collection of beautiful silk chiffons, satin crepes and luxe jersey, all in striking prints and bold hues. ThereÕs even a dead ringer for that blue wrap dress, which weÕd probably suggest wearing for life-changing moments. YÕknow, like announcing your impending nuptials to the worldÕs media. In fact, whatever the occasion, Daniella Helayel X Monsoon has an outfit for it.

Dressed-Up Dungas Buckle up ladies; the dungaree dress is the only thing you need to buy this week. You know, if you have to choose just the one…*sigh*

‘O

ff to the playground, are we!?’ Dad jokes and dungarees go hand-inhand – with those less educated in the world of fashion relishing in the opportunity to poke fun. By no means the easiest thing to wear, it takes dunga newbies approx three hours and four sartorial breakdowns to style them up successfully. However, thanks to one simple tweak, the tricky staple just got a

major chic-over. Behold, the dungaree maxi dress! Combining the classic pinny style top with an elegant floorskimming skirt, the dungaree maxi dress strikes the perfect balance between retro and sophisticated. Layer over a black Bardot top and pair with strappy block heels afterdark, or opt for a plain tee and Converse during the day. Overall, (see what we did there?) they’re a new-season buy well worth investing in. Our dads would be so proud… Dorothy Perkins

Barry M Illuminating Strobe Cream

There’s not a chunk of glitter in sight. As a rule of thumb, a great highlighter will leave you looking ethereal – like you’re glowing from within – rather than wearing leftover festival glitter. This one leaves a soft, sheeny finish that’s perfect for everyday wear. Layer up at night for a more look-at-me luminous intensity.

Pearly highlighters tend to leave darker skintones looking chalky, but this comes in two shimmering shades, Frosty Pink and Iced Bronze, so it’s got all skin tones covered. Combine the two for a more personalised colour.

It comes in at an impressive £4.49, so you don’t have to break the bank to get your glow on. Seriously. This – alongside the fact that the gleaming finish rivals even the most premium highlighters – is the reason it’s already sold out online. If you find a cheaper one, let us know.

It’s small enough to pop in your clutch and makes highlighting easy peasy, thanks to the twist up stick design. Like strobing for dummies.

Born in 2011, the Brit label’s minimalist wares have slowly been taking over the blogosphere – world domination takes time don’tcha know? Now, practically every stylista worth her salt has at least one HoS piece on her rails. That, plus the fact it’s stocked on everyone’s fave online shopping haunt, ASOS, means House of Sunny is a force to be reckoned with. Cheryl fuels baby rumours at an event last week

Liam and Cheryl went official on Instagram

COVER STORY

C h e ry l : summer e n g a g e m e n t, w i n t er ba by? Following more speculation that Cheryl might be pregnant with Liam Payne’s baby, Look has learnt she does have some good news to share…

WORDS: Olivia FOSteR PHOtOS: Rex, xPOSuRe, liam Payne/inStagRam

A

s Cheryl stepped onto the red carpet at a fashion event last week, one hand carefully placed on her stomach, the rumour mill went into overdrive once again. Yep, for the second time in just a month people started to speculate that she’s pregnant with One Direction singer Liam Payne’s baby – she was first spotted with what appeared to be a bump at the Global Gift Gala in Paris two weeks earlier. But while the 32-year-old star is yet to confirm – or deny – that she is expecting, Look has learnt that she does have some happy news to share, as she and Liam are planning on getting engaged. A source says: ‘Cheryl has no reason to draw out a long relationship with Liam because she knows what she wants by this stage of her life. And more than anything they both want to make the whole thing official and start planning a proper future as a married couple.’ According to our insiders, the happy couple would like to announce their plans to get married by the end of the summer – as soon as her divorce to

Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini is finalised. As Look revealed last week, Cheryl’s trying to push through proceedings as quickly as possible, and the pair – who’d reportedly been at loggerheads since their split in December – have finally reached an agreement. Insiders say that the only thing left is to sign the papers and they will both be free to move on properly. And while some friends have apparently questioned Cheryl’s willingness to enter into a third marriage so quickly after the failure of her second, the former X Factor judge is said to be really excited about her plans. ‘Everyone thought that Cheryl would be totally against marriage and making such a massive commitment to someone after her previous two failed,’ says a source. ‘But, surprisingly, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Plus she feels that if she and Liam are going to have a family, she’d like to be married first. It could be a case of summer engagement, winter baby.’ Cheryl’s first marriage to footballer Ashley Cole ended in 2010 after just four years. It was reported at the time that he had

cheated on her with several different women. In an interview last year she ‘They revealed that during that period she had: ‘coped in public and crumbled boTh in private’. She’s previously said: wanT ‘I was borderline. I was walking crazyville. I had no fire in me belly. To I didn’t feel passionate any more, plan a just a bit dead. W

hen Kylie Jenner’s ex-boyfriend rapper Tyga was spotted in Cannes last week, seemingly buying gifts for a new woman, a few eyebrows were raised around the Look office. Surely he hadn’t moved on that quickly? Well, it looks like he may well have. According to our sources, model Demi Rose Mawby – who was previously employed by Los Angeles escort service Taz’s Angels – was introduced to Tyga by the owner of the company, Michael ‘Taz’ Williams. She flew out to France to spend time with the star, but an insider says they’re not really dating. ‘Tyga’s romance with Demi could be considered as more of a “showmance” than a real romance,’ reckons a pal.

‘it’s a real kick in the teeth – kylie hasn’t stopped crying’

Still, Kylie’s not happy about the pair’s apparent closeness. ‘Kylie was so upset to see Tyga with Demi,’ says an insider. ‘She’s heard he has been buying her expensive gifts – it’s a real kick in the teeth, she hasn’t stopped crying.’ While in Cannes,Tyga, 26, was seen in a YSL store signing for a purchase, and Demi, 21, later posted a snap on Instagram of herself with a £990 clutch by the designer brand. In a second shot, she was seen with another £950 bag. And it seems 18-year-old Kylie isn’t the only one struggling with the situation – her clan isn’t too pleased either. ‘Kim in particular is mortified,’ says a source. ‘They’ve supported Tyga through his money problems and even had him on their show. Kim thinks it’s incredibly

disrespectful for him to be showing off with another woman – not just to Kylie, but the whole Kardashian family.’ However, last week, Tyga hit back at claims he has moved on, tweeting: ‘Single. Focused. Blessed. Living life.’ Kylie and Tyga started dating at the end of 2014 and were on and off for 18 months. Their split was marred with rumours that the father-of-one – who has a son with Rob Kardashian’s fiancée Blac Chyna – had cheated on her. After their break-up in May, Tyga told reporters: ‘Sometimes things don’t work out. But, you know, I love her.’ Kylie, who has been hanging out with new rapper PartyNextDoor, aka Jahron Brathwaite, is yet to comment on her split with Tyga. We bet she might have something to say now, eh?

Kourtney Kardashian

Turns out weÕre not the only ones swiping our way through Tinder

C

elebrities are just like us – even when it comes to dating. Yep, last week Kourtney Kardashian was signed up to Bumble by her younger sister Kylie, proving that even those famous types need a bit of help when it comes to romance. Kylie shared a sneak peek of her sister’s new profile on Snapchat, saying: ‘Hey Kourtney. I set you up for a dating profile. Everybody’s doing it. It’s cute.’ Kourtney broke up with

her on-off boyfriend of 10 years, and father of her three children, Scott Disick, in July last year. Previous episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians have shown her family encouraging the 37-year-old to start seeing new people. In Kylie’s snap, Kourt could be seen laughing as her sister showed her the über-glam pictures she’d picked for her profile. But Kourtney’s not the only celeb to give online dating a go. These guys have all been at it too…

or an email has arrived. This means that the novelty-craving part of our brains (the prefrontal cortex) feels rewarded. When we answer these messages, the brain releases dopamine (the feelgood hormone), which we also naturally, instinctively want more of. And it’s dopamine that feeds addictions! So without this mental stimulation, going out seems boring, work seems dull and routine tasks feel mundane.’ Sarah concludes: ‘I believe that technology has just given us another addiction to crave and we get withdrawal symptoms (boredom) when we don’t have it.’ Blogger Yasmin Harisha, 21, says the problem affects her friendship group: ‘There always seems to be something better round the corner and we know it.’ And Hattie Jamieson, 21, currently unemployed, agrees. She says: ‘Everyone sets high expectations of everything now. You can see when someone gets a fantastic job, or they’re travelling to amazing places. It’s almost like a competition of who can post the best things.’ Pretty easy to see how you could end up feeling unhappy with your lot, eh? So what can we do about it? Well, Sarah has some pretty handy advice. ‘Shift your focus onto something positive and keep it there. This allows the boredom to pass away,’ she explains. ‘You have to recognise that while there’s a part of you that feels bored, there’s also a part of you that feels happy and content. We call this part “awareness”. Notice this content part, understand how it feels and let its positive energy cancel out the boredom. In the longer term, try to cut down on the stimulation of technology: don’t use technology after a certain time at night. Have specific times of day to use it and then turn it off if possible. The more we can stop the instant gratification of technology, the more we’re able to find a better balance within the brain and its neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. Recognise technology’s addictive quality and do not respond to the desire to open every message immediately, to read every Facebook post or to check emails constantly.’ For Gemma, switching off helps. ‘I read a lot, which helps me to stop getting bored. There’s always the temptation to turn to social media or the television but I think that it can become a vicious cycle when it comes to boredom.’ Basically, it sounds like it’s time to turn off those smart phones, and start living a little, guys – ah, go on!

ver feel like your life is lacking something? That even though you’re surrounded by people, by stimulation, something’s missing and you’re a little bit… bored? Well, you’re not alone. A new study has revealed that two thirds of millennials (18- to 30-year-olds) feel like they’re not exactly satisfied by life. In fact, just four per cent say they never get bored. She says: ‘We’ve been told that we can have it all and because of that I’ve always expected to have an exciting job, and a nice flat, and to be going out all the time with a big gang. very so often a film comes along that’s as uplifting as it is tearjerking as it is brilliant – and Me Before You is just that. While it starts as a working relationship, watching the two lead characters get closer – as Lou tries to energise the recently injured Will – is much like The Notebook. In fact, seeing their romance play out will leave you feeling like anything is possible. The film is full of magical moments that we’ve talked about non-stop since leaving the cinema. This film will leave you feeling like anything is possible ‘spend one more moment with a girl in a red dress’ gave us the same goosepimples as when Ross and Rachel first kissed. As if that’s not enough, there’s a brilliant cameo from Joanna Lumley as well as a touching speech by Brendan Coyle as Lou’s father. Trust us when we say it’s a love story that will melt the hardest, most cynical of hearts. Round up your friends, pack plenty of tissues and prepare to fall for Me Before You.

‘I cried, I laughed and I fell in love with Lou and Will. Me Before You is just perfect.’ Giselle Wainwright, Look’s Features Editor ‘A sweet, romantic film that had me sobbing uncontrollably by the end. Incredible!’ Angie Joseph, Look’s Art Editor ‘The chemistry between Sam and Emilia is off the scale, and I didn’t want it to end. T

o say Emilia Clarke is one of our favourite Brit actresses would be a bit of an understatement. She’s funny, she’s clever and she loves a burger just as much as we do – truly a girl after our own hearts. And now the 29-year-old’s going to be tugging on our heartstrings (see what we did there?) alongside the gorgeous Sam Claflin in Me Before You. Here she talks raiding Lou’s wardrobe, working with her ‘dreamboat’ co-star Sam and why she’ll always be romantic…

We loved how kooky Lou was. What drew you to the character – were you looking for a change from Daenerys Targaryen in Game Of Thrones? It was more that I got sent it and thought: ‘There’s not a world where I’m not doing this part. There’s not a world where I’m not fighting tooth and nail to play Lou.’ And it was just so joyful. Everything I’m known for on-screen is so different from who I am, but with Me Before You, in between takes, I would be no different

off-camera… This was just such a beautiful opportunity to play a large part of who I am – the clumsy idiot! Sounds like a pretty straightforward shoot for you, then! Yeah. I just got to do all the things that I always want to do. I got to really crack people up! It was brilliant. Having Sam as a co-star can’t have hurt – what was it like working with him? [He’s a] dreamboat: super, super good! I feel like leads either hate each other or love each other – and happily we were in the ‘love each other’ category! He’s a dude. Director Thea Sharrock said that she’s never lost an actress more to the costume department during rehearsals. Is that right? Oh my God! Every single day, for a month, we would have four hours a day of deciding on costumes, just trying to figure them all out. I had 70

at one point, but then it got whittled down to 52. We never used the same outfit twice. [Lou] only lives in a little box room… She can’t fit all those clothes in there. So her shoes, she hung them on the walls with a bit of skirting board. I was so over the moon when I walked into Lou’s room. Did you get to keep any of the outfits? I tried! There were hundreds and hundreds… I got given the tights, the

Are you a big romantic movie watcher? What are your favourites? When Harry Met Sally is the ultimate for me, the absolute ultimate – I know it all off by heart! Anything – because of the age that I am – with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in it: Sleepless In Seattle, You’ve Got Mail… I love all of those. Then Four Weddings And A Funeral! They’re all shameless – proper stay-at-home-on-a-Sunday with a box of Kleenex. Are you an unashamed romantic?

Rom-coms make you feel like there’s hope. A bit of you wants the optimism, the magic bumblebee tights. My amazing hair and make-up lady got some of the leftover fabric of the wedding dress and made me a Lou doll! Thea was very definitive that Me Before You is a love story. What did you feel? Yeah, it’s the backbone of the whole story. The story to tell is the story of their love. It defines who they become and the choices that they make.

Er… yeah! I have this theory – it might fall flat – but I watched Cinderella the other day, because my mate Richard [Madden] is in it. I was watching it and it just reminded me that, as a kid, I grew up watching Disney and you grow up believing in magic, and the ‘happily ever after’ of it all. And I think that movies like this have that little sprinkling. Rom-coms, they make you feel safe. They make you feel like there’s hope. These things just tap into a universal truth. There’s a little bit of you that wants the hope, and wants the optimism and wants the magic. And Jojo’s [author and screenwriter Jojo Moyes] book and this movie has that.

Sam working with emilia was very easy

MEET HUNGER GAMES HOT TIE SAM CLAFLIN, WHO’S QUITE POSSIBLY THE NICEST GUY IN HOLLY WOOD. PREPARE TO SWOON…

O

K, it’s official: we have a major crush on Sam Claflin. He’s totally gorgeous (and totally heartbreaking) as Will in Me Before You, not to mention an all-round good guy. We chat to the 29-year-old about getting into character, working with Emilia and how playing Will was his toughest acting challenge yet…

How did you find your way into this complex character? The film is Lou’s story, but Will is obviously a big part of it. And, as a paraplegic character, his story is rarely told or indeed told so well. I felt obliged to put my heart and soul into portraying him truthfully. It was very important for me personally to do him justice. Will is quite a prickly person when we first meet him. Was that tricky to navigate? Will was an extremely successful guy before the accident. The more research I did, the clearer it became to me that it’s his way of hiding the pain he’s experiencing. He doesn’t

want anyone to feel sympathy for him… Whether or not I would ever feel like that, it’s impossible to say. I think things affect people in different ways – everyone has their own journey and this is Will’s. What were the physical challenges of using a wheelchair? I’ve done very physical films up to now, and this was quite the opposite. There were so many restrictions to my movements. Will’s mind is very much alive, but the physical restraints [were] quite challenging. Being constantly aware of my body and [its] stillness has been a new and insightful experience. Was that tough to attain? It was mentally and emotionally draining at times. I remember there being a moment in between two takes when I just broke down. I totally lost it. Thea [Sharrock, the director] turned to me and said: ‘Are you OK?’ I had basically lost myself in the moment. But it must have been good working with Emilia? [It was] amazing. Emilia and I actually met about five years ago. We did a photo shoot for

THE NOTEBOOk Like Lou and Will, Noah and Allie are like a modern-day Romeo and Juliet. Having been kept apart by her over-zealous mother, it seems like all hope is lost for these two… Until Noah wins Allie back by building her a house. All boyfriends, take serious note!

Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow and we hit it off right from the get-go. So, in the sense we already knew each other and we respect and are fans of each other’s work, it felt very, very easy. Jojo’s novel moved millions to tears. Do you think the movie will follow suit? I hope so! When I read the script and the novel, it was gut-wrenching. I watched the film with my wife, agent and publicist and they were all in floods of tears. You’re swept up into this love story, but these characters and the choices they make, I think, will open up a lot of topics for conversation after you leave the theatre. Sam as Will with his nurse, Nathan

IF YOU LIkED THESE CULT CL A SSICS, YOU’LL LOvE Me BeFore You…

ONE DAY Even though Dexter is a total berk for most of the film, you still hope that ‘One Day’ (get it?) he and Emma will get together. But just like in Me Before You, when they finally do it’s not all plain sailing… Make sure you have your tissues at the ready for this one, guys.

NOT TING HILL Oh, how could you not love that scene where a teary-eyed Julia Roberts utters ‘I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her’ to a floppy-haired Hugh Grant? We’ve been quoting it for years (in our mirrors at home, obvs).

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS Based on the John Green (we heart him!) novel of the same name, The Fault In Our Stars was destined to become a Sunday snuggle favourite. The story of Hazel and Augustus is a beautiful tale of how to survive the death of a loved one.

‘The Summer Romance That Changed My Life’ EMMA FIRTH, 2 5, FROM LONDON, NEvER LET GO OF HER SUMMER FLING…

R

ewind to July last year and I was pretty happy in my single-girl bubble. After around two torturous years getting over my first love, I was finally happy being alone. Weekend getaways with my girls, flirting with boys I had no intention of being in a relationship with – I was having fun. But my ‘I Don’t Need A Man’ moment all went up in smoke when I met my now boyfriend – Shawn, 26 – last August in London. ‘You’ve got to meet my American friend,’ my best mate Alex told me. ‘He’s an artist staying here for a summer course and doesn’t really know anyone.’ I remember seeing him for the first time – all 6ft 2in of him (FYI, I’m 5ft 1in) – and being struck by his soft Philadelphia accent. We went dancing that evening in a big group of friends and I probably spoke to him once – when I like someone I become mute. But the next day I plucked up the courage to

invite him for lunch, thinking food and company would cure my hangover. We ended up spending the whole day walking around, talking about our dreams, fears and families (‘I thought this girl must really like me if she’s asking me all these questions,’ he would later tell me). The weeks that unfolded thereafter felt somewhat like starring in my own rom-com. We spent our days together by the canal in the summer heat. We were falling in love – fast – but we also knew it had to end soon, as his course finished in September and then he’d have to fly back to the US. But we kept in contact through Facebook or long WhatsApp calls. While our separation was difficult, other guys just paled in comparison. Then the call came. ‘I got into the two-year Master’s degree in London. I accepted and I’m coming in September,’ he told me on the phone in March. He may catch the last glimpse of summer when he returns to the UK, but I’m more excited about our winter. Together.

Date ’Dos

That’ll Dazzle This Summer  Whether you’re planning on bringing a plus one to your friend’s wedding or embarking on a hot holiday romance, this is your summer of love. Here’s how to keep all eyes on you…

Wedding Date A chic updo = instant sophistication and serious class. Add accessories like cute hairpins or some flowers to match your ’do to your dress. Team with a smoky eye for serious smoulder. Start with a deep side parting and pull your hair into a low bun, positioned just behind one of your ears. Carefully create your bun and secure with a clear Invisibobble, £3.75. Finish the look with a hair accessory of your choice and set your style with Tresemmé Extra Hold Hairspray, £1.99.

Go For Glam

Hello Holiday Braid

’50s Hollywood glamour is a go-to date look for a reason. Pair tumbling tresses with a classic red lip and you’ll knock him dead. Prep hair with Tigi Bodybuilding Catwalk Strong Mousse, £13.95. Part to one side. Blow-dry hair, then curl in sections using a large-barrelled tong. While each curl is still hot, pin it in place. This will ensure they stay all night long. Leave to sit for a few minutes, then unpin. Brush through to soften the curls.

Heat is hair’s enemy, so play around with plaits – they’ll keep your hair off your face without looking too severe. Pretty and practical! Split your hair into a side parting and pin the front sections behind your ears. On one side, just behind the pin, pull your hair out across the top of your head. Starting on that side, create a French plait and continue it over the top of your head. Keep it close to your head and secure behind your ear on the other side with some pins.

Summer’s Super Shapes S This skirt shape is the definition of versatile – it creates curves for women who don’t have any and skims across wide hips and bums for those that do. Result!

If You’re Hourglass... Go for a high-waisted fit and team with a loose-fitting shirt or blouse. Don’t forget to tuck it in to show off your small waistline.

If You’re Tall... Below knee-length is not only super on-trend for the season (check out Miu Miu’s SS16 show) but will also help you to appear less leggy.

Suit Every Figure

High-Street Catwalk Yup, we’ve discovered the three must-have style staples for every shape and size…. You’re welcome!

If you’re not a fan of showing off your body then this cut of trews is perfect for you. Their oversized, easy-breezy shape will help keep you cool in warmer climates without having to flash any flesh (except your ankles... Well, it is summer after all!)

If You’re Pear-Shaped... Dark navy is a chic summer alternative to black – and just as slimming. Opt for an extra wide leg to help balance out a big bum or hips.

If You’re Petite... Cropped trousers were made for you! Oversized shapes will drown your small figure, so instead keep things streamlined and slim with a sleek, tailored pair.

High-Street Catwalk

Belted outerwear is pretty much everywhere at the moment and there’s a good reason for that. It’s smart, stylish and can be thrown over pretty much any outfit. But best of all, it’s totally wearable – curves or no curves!

If You’re Big-Busted... choose a classically cut longline blazer in a thick fabric, so it holds a structured shape. steer clear of boxy, cropped cuts as they could make you look too top heavy.

smaller silhouettes could try experimenting with bolder colourways or statement prints. consider investing in quality leather or suede. thanks to its timeless tailored shape and luxe fabric, this jacket will work all the way through to next winter and beyond.

Mascara is the one beauty essential I’ll never forgo and I’m also partial to a lash tint pre-holiday. So you can imagine my excitement when Rimmel announced the launch of its Volume Colourist Mascara, £7.99. It works like a gradual tan, so that bare lashes appear darker after just two weeks. A mascara that doubles up as a lash tint? It’s literally a stroke of genius!

MACX ChrisChang Sometimes I’ll try my hand at experimental make-up. Re-creating the crazy, colourful SS16 runway looks is a breeze with MAC’S Limited Edition Chris Chang collection. The packaging is inspired by Chinese art and everything from the kaleidoscopic colours to the bold pigments won me over. Gaby

shley James looks incredible, right? The 28-year-old is now superfit after being whipped into shape by James Crossley, AKA Hunter from Gladiators. Ashley’s gone from eating 800 cals a day – which made her feel ‘lethargic’ and ‘tired’ – to 1,500 cals a day, with full-body workouts that combine Tabata, HIIT and gladiatorstyle workouts, obvs. Er, it certainly works! Ryan:‘Being AGood FatherIsMyPriority’ WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE STAR OF THE NICE GUYS, RYAN GOSLING, SHORTLY BEFORE THE BIRTH OF HIS SECOND CHILD TO TALK COMEDY, FATHERHOOD AND HOW HE AND PARTNER EVA MENDES NEVER FIGHT…

Not even that tie could make us stop loving Ryan

Ryan, you seem to be indulging your comic sensibilities again with your work in The Big Short and now in The Nice Guys… I like doing comedies. I loved doing The Nice Guys and working with Russell [Crowe]. It was a great script and Shane Black had a very clear take on the kind of atmosphere he wanted to create. That always makes it so much easier to get into it and enjoy your time working on the film.

Does being a dad make you want to indulge your lighter side? I think it does. I’ve never had so much enjoyment as I’ve had being a father even though I’ve never slept so little in my life [laughs]. I don’t think I would have wanted to do a very dark film during the past year. It would have been hard getting into that mood and then coming home to laugh and play with my daughter.

Has fatherhood changed you? I don’t know. I always wanted to have children and not having had a father present when I was growing up, I’m probably trying harder to be the best father possible. I’m

very lucky to be with such a wonderful woman and have such a wonderful family.

You grew up in the company of women. Now you have two more women in your life! I love being surrounded by women! I love having a daughter and I look forward to when she’s older and having that same kind of rapport that I’ve had with my sister. Most important of all right now is being a good father and keeping our little family happy and healthy. When you believe in something so passionately, everything becomes a pleasure.

Have you learnt any Spanish since you and Eva became a couple? Un poquito! My accent isn’t bad, but my vocabulary is still pretty limited. I’m lucky that Eva is very patient with me. I always tell her that if she would ever get really mad at me – it hasn’t happened yet, honestly – that she should yell at me in Spanish. That way I could never really get angry either because I couldn’t understand anything she’d be saying! [Laughs]
