LUGAS SYLLABUS An up-and-coming Indonesian contemporary artist, Lugas Syllabus was born in Bengkulu, Indonesia in 1987. He graduated from Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) earning an undergrad degree in painting and has held various exhibitions since then including Tomorrow Must Be Better (2017) at Element Art Space, The Garden of Triumph (2016) at Art Stage Singapore. Born into an artistically inclined family, Lugas realised his passion for arts at an early age since both his father and uncle are practicing artists. Lugas’s works are loaded with fantasy-like narratives, woven with iconographies of pop culture, folklores and even sci-fi comic characters. Staggered in the paintings are satire and irony of modern living.

But not with the peace of the soul. Here, Lugas explores the uncharted land of the space. As the spaceman takes a trip into the fantasy-like oasis, that is glowingly as if it were heaven; alluding to humans’ greed for adventure and into the realm of our dreams. The spaceman moves further away in search for something more meaningful. Wonderbook of Wonderland depicts a child deeply engrossed in reading the book on her lap. Standing behind her are rabbits dressed in various super hero costumes. Juxtaposed against the jungly forest, these super hero-rabbit hybrids strike us as the little girl’s visual imagination of the fairy-tale she is reading. Seemingly, they are the ones that had lead her into this rabbit hole – a fantasy-like world. What is most interesting about this work is the fact that Lugas paints between the dualities of imagined and reality dimension. The pinnochio-like nose pulls viewers back into a worldly interpretation that super heroes do not exist, it is an illusion fantasized by the young child. But at the same time, the deer antlers in similar intensity descries hope and pureness of her desire to take the existence of super heroes as gospel. The fact that, those hybrids are standing behind her, while her focus is solely on the book, is such a strong visual tension that Lugas has created to depict the contemporary world. In reality, we are often stuck in vicious cycles, hoping a super power could be the easy fix to problem. “...Locatelli was known for his ability in capturing the spirit of his subject matter, as encapsulated in the present lot...” Born into an artistic legacy of three generations, Romualdo Locatelli is regarded as one of the finest Italian portraitists especially for his works in Asia of Javanese and Balinese subjects. Locatelli began his artistic journey at age fourteen, assisting his father in executing the architectural decoration of the church of San Filastro. He received formal artistic training at the Carrara Academy in Bergamo.
A tireless traveler and an artist with immense curiosity, Locatelli travelled extensively across Italy in 1927 before settling in Rome and opened a studio in Via Margutta. It was here where he achieved rapid success as he received a wide range of commissioned works from the Royal House, including a commissioned portrait of King Victor Emmanuel II which was exhibited at the 1938 Venice Biennale. Amongst the list of important patrons of his work includes the Pope and Benito Mussolini. Dedicated to his craft, Locatelli was known for his ability to capture the spirit of his subject matter, as encapsulated in the present lot. Affandi is the world most well-known Indonesian painter and is regarded as the nation's painting Maestro. Born in Cirebon, Indonesia in 1907, he received a scholarship from the government of India to join The Art School Shantiniketan Tagore University back in 1949 and was also awarded a grant from the US government to study methods of art education and to stay in the US for four months in 1957. Affandi has produced over two thousand masterpieces, his oeuvre is mostly pure expressionism and abstract which has been exhibited and displayed in numerous exhibition and institution across the world. The Tangkuban Perahu artwork is inspired by the landscape of real place with the same name located in an area not too far from his hometown. Affandi managed to create balance and harmony. Affandi depicts the Tangkuban Perahu Mountain, one of the wonders in Indonesia which is located in Bandung, West java. Affandi accurately illustrates the view of the landscape. Tangkuban Perahu’s existence is based on a legend that narrates a son who killed his dog who turned out to be his cursed father. His mother, a deity cursed as a human being, banished him. He later returned as a man who unknowingly fell in love with his mother due to her beauty. He asked her to marry him but was rejected. Furious, he kicked a boat that turned into a mountain, which is now known as the Tangkuban Perahu. Born in Manila, Philippine in 1927, Antonio Blanco of American Spanish artist descent has been interested in depicting the human form especially female feature since he started painting. He travelled extensively around the world simply to examine different kinds of subjects matters and finally landed in Bali in 1952. In 1953, he married a Balinese dancer and decided to reside in Bali permanently as he was also captivated by the local culture and people. The present work with his wife, Ni Ronji, as the muse exudes vibrant coloure of Ubud landscape. Portrait of Balinese woman is one of his remarkable pieces in his artistic journey. Blanco, known as a world-renowned painter and his amazing ar tworks are adored and collected by several notable world figures such as Soekarno
(Indonesia’s first president), Juan Carlos I (former King of Spain), Adam Malik (Former Indonesia’s vice president), Michael Jackson, Ingrid Bergman and many more. In 1998, he established his longtime dream, Blanco renaissance museum, located in Ubud, Bali where it exhibits not only Blanco’s outstanding oeuvre but also a retrospective of his artistic journey for more than 50 years. Abdullah’s oeuvre is known for touching 5 themes which are portrait, human figures, natural landscape, myth-spirituality-drama and struggles in the society. Born in 1915 in Surakar ta, Indonesia, an realist and naturalist painter maestro, Basoeki Abdullah, son of Indonesia’s first painter in the 20th century, Abdullah Suriosubroto. Abdullah first started to draw at the age of 4 and keep practicing until he landed for scholarships to study in his field of interest and graduated from Academie Voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, Netherland and obtained the Royal International Certificate of Art (RIA) award in 1936. In his artistic journey, he was once appointed as the official painter at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta and his works have decorated the state palace. Not only that but Basoeki Abdullah was also once occupied such a respectable position as a royal court painter of Thailand, and received an award in the form of a gold star Poporo from King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King of Thailand), which is the highest honour of the kingdom of Thailand to a Royal Court Artist who has great service to government and palace – with all these few achievements, eventually made him the ambassador for Indonesian Painting. His home country, Indonesia is known as one of the most conservative countries in the world and often regard nudity as something taboo or disrespectful, but since Abdullah had lived in the western countries for a while, his was more open-minded compared to his fellow Indonesians, through this painting he aimed to unfold the closed-minded mindset of the locals as well as raise awareness on the topic of body image and that the true human beauty is their whole own body – the defined muscles and not just face or clothes. Depicted in this masterpiece is a woman without any materials covering her while in her most comfortable sleeping position and usage of natural-nude color palate – enhanced the overall beauty in the simplest and minimalistic way. In his artistic journey, He has held his solo exhibition and joined groups in several countries across Asia and Europe, his outstanding masterpieces since then have been exhibited and placed in many countries including in the Soestdijk Palace in Baarn, Netherland. In 2001, the ministry of culture and tourism of Indonesia inaugurated the Basoeki Abdullah Museum, to tribute the maestro. The museum consists of the artist’s private collections and serves the public by holding exhibitions, seminars, research, workshops and series of other activities.

Agapetus A. Kristiandana is known as an Indonesian Contemporary artist, born in Yogyakarta in 1968. An Indonesian contemporary artist born in Bandung, Indonesia in 1984, Beatrix Hendriani Kaswara, graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung of Faculty of Art and Design. Her artwork has been exhibited in numerous cities across Indonesia. Beatrix first started her artistic journey from photographing an object or looking for material on the internet then she would process it back with computer software. Her oeuvre is greatly inspired by the digital concept and the 90s vibe where neon palate was on-trend. This artwork is one of her fine artwork in her angel series that began in 2010 following her previous neon colour painting series, first started in 2008. The neon painting has been her distinct characteristic, using dark colour as a colour base and neon colour on its top representing the signature of the city – as she has always been living in the city and refer herself as a town girl.

In Chinese legend, Qilin is an animal that the Gods rode on. Although it has a shape similar to a lion, Qilin is a representative of 18 animals. Its body is of a horse with scales of a snake and fish; The tail is of a turtle; Each of its legs is of different animals, a hong (eagle), tiger, buffalo and deer; Eyes of a crab; ears of a rabbit; mouth of a lion with fangs of a tiger; Cheeks of a dragon, and two forked horns of a deer. The color of Qilin is usually taken from one of the five elements on earth; green which represents the element of the sky or lungs, blue which represents the element of water or throat, red which represents the earth or anal element, yellow which represents the natural element or the heart and orange which represents the element of the mountain or stomach. In God Name We Bomb is part of the series Vasan had painted for his solo exhibition held in Jakarta in 2008 titled Red Planet: Iraq War Five Years Later. As the title suggests, the work is Vasan’s commentary on the geopolitical issues of Iraq war. Here we have the artist himself down-trodden beneath the man in suit of the US president, putting his face as the bomb, ready to charge this explosive weapon to anyone.
Cynically, in a lopsided smile, the tainted self-proclaiming role of world justice crusader, policing the order of world peace. When all fingers are pointing to the bomb as the root of all evils, Vasan is trying to tell us that the bomb is just a tool with no hands (just like in the painting, Vasan appears to have his hands tied up and locked in the weapon); there is someone else on top who is notoriously manipulating the situation. 5 WORKS BY JEIHAN SUKMANTORO Indonesia’s renowned artist born Surakarta, Indonesia in 1938, Jeihan Sukmantoro’s oeuvre is well known for his distinct style compared to other painters. He once studied at the Faculty of Art and Design at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). However, he never finished his education at ITB because of his rebellious attitude – that occurs because of his past near-death experiences. One time he was in an accident and Jeihan was believed to be lifeless, but he woke up before being buried. This event then influenced the way he thought and his works. 33 Auction presents in this auction, maestro’s five signature expressionism artworks, Tari Bali Biru, Irin, Nani, Sari, Nansi which are portraits of human in black-dark eyes or sunken eyes and two colour tone as the background. Aforementioned are his art identity furthermore the artist often blends eastern mystical with western analytical realms in his works - recounts a meditative aura and to symbolize the darkness of mystery in the human path or future reality. Djoko Pekik, an Indonesia’s renowned artist whose oeuvre is well-known not only in the country but also overseas and graduated from Indonesia Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta in 1962.
While he was a student, he was part of the LEKRA ( a left-wing cultural organization in Indonesia) and actively assisted the Sanggar Bumi Tarung (an art studio that focuses on the production of arts that could be enjoyed even for the lower class people), Thus it led Pekik to his realist-expressive art style and embellished people value such as lives of the common people in villages and urban neighbourhood as well as landscapes as
his main themes and mostly depicted in bleak tones dominated by moss-green, black, ocher and cream. 33 Auction is proud to present, Pekik’s ‘The Farmer’, ‘Raksasa Bermata Satu’ and ‘Penari Topeng’ in this auction as they are the piece of works that clearly illustrates his main artistic integrity and the sides that people nowadays do not even realize or often see in this era.

The ‘The Farmer’ artwork might seem simple at first glance and it looks like just a mere farmer facing his back to us, but to understand the main issue on what Pekik is trying to tell us is depicted through the emotion and facial expression of that farmer. It is an exact representation at that period set here on how everyone male has to work hard and since Indonesia has a great amount of land, a huge number of male worked as a farmer as their daily job. Farming is not an easy task, farmers’ skin is usually brown caused by the sunburned and they have to keep an eye to their field every day and be in their workplace from dawn until dusk. Despite all the hardships, we can see that they are working hard not only for themselves but to their close ones such as family, we can see from the longing eyes to go back home even if he seems to be frowning or unfriendly as depicted in the painting. ‘Penari Topeng’ translated as a masked dancer in English, inspired by the Javanese Malangan mask dance. There are several masks used in the performance and each of them has their sacred meaning that represents human’s journey in life. Depicted here is a dancer’s face covered with the ‘panji’ mask. In this time and age, there are no a lot of people aware of this heritage because it’s been dying and low exposure from media on this, here Pekik hoped to tell everyone that this beautiful traditional heritage existed and expect some better changes in the future. *Chinese and Indonesian Translation go to page 158

4 WORKS BY ROEDYAT MARTADIREDJA An Indonesian modern artist born in Bandung in 1930, Roedyat Martadiredja was first exposed to arts painting when he met Barli Sasmitawinata, who is a significant artist in Indonesia’s art history. Fascinated not only in paintings but also sculpture, Roedyat studied sculpting at Staatliche Academie der Bildenden Kunste, Stuttgart, Germany. In 1951, Roedyat held his first exhibition focusing on abstract paintings that transformed forms into field arrangements. Later, he switched to other painting style by adopting Indonesia's traditional puppet (wayang) theme into his works, those paintings in decorative patterns featuring Javanese ladies in scene of traditional markets or ritual festival. He has won competitions at Rottweil (1963) and the monumental competition in Jakarta (1973).
Most of Roedyat’s works are based on his surroundings or environment, proudly presented here by 33 Auction are the Barong Dance, Ceremony in Bali, Kesibukan Di Pagi Hari, The Village are four of his beautiful artworks that were created when he was in Bali. Seniman kontemporer Indonesia yang sedang naik daun, Lugas Syllabus lahir di Bengkulu, Indonesia pada tahun 1987. Ia lulus dari Instut Seni Indonesia dengan gelar sarjana seni lukis dan sejak saat itu ia telah menyelenggarakan berbagai pameran termasuk Tomorrow Must Be Better (2017) di Element Art Space, The Garden of Triumph (2016) di Art Stage Singapore. Terlahir dalam keluarga dengan kemampuan artistik yang tinggi, ayah dan pamannya juga berprofesi sebagai seniman, Lugas menyadari kecintaannya akan seni pada saat belia. Karya-karya Lugas kaya dengan narasi yang seperti fantasi, ikonografi budaya pop, cerita rakyat sampai grafik komik sci-fi. Tersirat di dalam lukisannya adalah satire dan ironi dari kehidupan modern. WonDerbook of Wonderland menggambarkan seorang anak yang asyik dengan buku bacaannya. Para kelinci yang mengenakan kostum dari beberapa karakter pahlawan super berdiri dekat di belakangnya. Disandingkan dengan hutan rima, para pahlawan super kelinci hibrida ini terlihat seperti imajinasi visual anak tersebut dari cerita yang sedang ia baca. Mereka juga dapat menjadi sesuatu yang membawa ia masuk ke lubang kelinci – seperti sebuah dunia fantasi. Yang paling menarik dari karya seni ini yaitu fakta di mana Lugas melukiskan antara dualistis dimensi imajinasi dan realita. Hidung seperti Pinocchio menarik para penonton kembali ke dalam interpretasi duniawi di mana pahlawan super itu tidak nyata, mereka hanya lah ilusi yang dibentuk
dari imajinasi anak kecil. Akan tetapi, tanduk rusa dengan intensitas yang mirip menunjukkan rasa akan harapan dan kemurnian keinginannya untuk melihat pahlawan super dan merindukan keberadaan mereka. Fakta bahwa hibrida tersebut berdiri di belakangnya, sementara anak tersebut sedang fokus hanya kepada bukunya, merupakan suatu simbol visual yang kuat yang telah diciptakan Lugas untuk menggambarkan dunia kontemporer. Pada realitanya, kita sering terjebak dalam situasi yang sulit, berharap jika ada kekuatan super yang dapat menjadi solusi mudah untuk menyelesaikan masalah. Karya seni yang ditampilkan ini dengan perpaduan warna palet cerah yang sempurna berhasil memikat perhatian kita kepada narasi cerita, dan tanpa sadar, kita juga terhanyut dalam kisah fantasi Lugas. Lukisan kontemporer dengan nuansa futuristik ‘Sebuah Kisah Romantis Di Tanah Panah Hikmat’ ini adalah suatu karya Lugas yang meramalkan bagaimana kehidupan di luar angkasa akan terlihat di masa depan. Saat ini hanya astronaut yang dilatih untuk terbang ke luar angkasa, sebidang tanah yang belum di petakan oleh manusia. Dalam karya ini, Lugas menempatkan semua benda yang terdapat di bumi dan memprediksi bahwa mereka akan sama nantinya di masa depan. Oleh karena itu, untuk melanjutkan dan tanpa berpikir panjang, ia langsung mengoleskan cat minyak ke kanvas dan melanjutkan pengecatan dengan jari-jarinya hanya untuk menyadari bahwa lukisan tersebut terlihat lebih baik dan lebih hidup. Seniman ini dikenal sebagai seniman yang tidak suka membaca, oleh karena itu sebagian besar karyanya tidak memiliki teori yang rumit di dalamnya tetapi setiap karya yang ia ciptakan memiliki emosi yang dalam dan niat yang jelas dan itulah kehebatan Affandi. Menurut legenda, Tangkuban perahu bercerita tentang seorang wanita bernama Dayang Sumbi dan meninggalkan putranya yang bernama Sangkuriang saat masih kecil. Anak lakilaki itu tumbuh sebagai seorang pria dewasa dan akhirnya jatuh cinta dengan seorang wanita yang merupakan ibunya, mengetahui hal ini, Sumbi memintanya untuk membangun perahu sebagai tugas untuk mencegah Sangkuriang menikahinya. Pada akhirnya, Sangkuriang tidak dapat menyelesaikannya dan ia menendang bendungan dan perahu yang belum selesai itu, mengakibatkan banjir besar dan terciptalah Tangkuban Perahu dari lambung perahu. Di sini Affandi ingin menunjukkan emosi sedih dan frustrasi Sangkuriang yang tergambar jelas dari langitlangit berwarna suram hingga tepatnya rupa perahu yang terbalik itu.

Karya seni ini terinspirasi dari cerita rakyat Indonesia 'The Story of Sugar Palm Tree' â&#x20AC;&#x201C; suatu kisah bersaudara yatim piatu Beru Sibou dan abangnya Tare Iluh, keduanya dibesarkan oleh paman mereka hingga remaja dan ketika Tare sudah cukup umur untuk pergi keluar sendiri, dia menggunakan uang yang diberikan pamannya untuk bekerja tetapi sayangnya karena berjudi dia kehilangan semua uangnya dan ditangkap masuk penjara. Beru, saudara perempuannya sangat cemas dengan keberadaan abangnya dan setelah mengetahui bahwa dia dipenjara dan berhutang, ia berdoa kepada Tuhan untuk membantunya membayar hutang kakaknya dengan cara apa pun sehingga penduduk desa dapat memaafkan dan membebaskannya. Keinginan Tare terkabul dan tiba-tiba ia terserang badai besar dan berubah menjadi pohon yang berguna sehingga air matanya berubah menjadi air manis. Pohon itu sangat disukai oleh penduduk sekitar dan mereka menamakannya pohon gula aren. Karya seni Kustarto telah di pamerkan dalam pameran tunggal dan kelompok di beberapa kota di Tiongkok dan Indonesia. Karya seni Kustarto dikenal khas karna penggambaran monokromatik dari tubuh manusia yang sedang beraksi. Ia sering menggunakan tubuhnya sendiri untuk menjelajahi batasan tubuh manusia. Menurutnya, berpose dalam posisi apa pun, tidak peduli seberapa aneh itu, adalah suatu cara untuk mengenali diri sendiri dan untuk menjalani kehidupan. In God Name We Bomb merupakan bagian dari serial Vasan yang dilukis untuk pameran solonya yang diselenggarakan di Jakarta pada tahun 2008 berjudul Red Planet: Iraq War Five Years Later. Sesuai dengan judulnya, lukisan ini adalah komentar Vasan terhadap isu geopolitik dari perang Iraq. Di sini sang seniman melukis dirinya sendiri tertindih di bawah seorang lelaki berjas presiden Amerika Serikat, membuat wajahnya seperti bom, siap untuk menyerang senjata peledak kepada siapa pun. Sinisnya, dengan senyum miring, peran yang memproklamirkan diri sebagai tentara salib keadilan dunia, mengawasi tatanan perdamaian dunia. Ketika semua jari menunjuk pada bom sebagai akar dari segala kejahatan, Vasan mencoba memberitahu kita bahwa bom hanya lah alat tanpa tangan (seperti dalam lukisan, Vasan tampak seperti tangannya diikat dan dikunci pada senjata); ada orang lain di atas yang terkenal sedang memanipulasi situasi. Dalam merek dagang yang selalu berulang dari “Made In U.S.A” dan kanvas kamuflase militer, itu menyinggung seperti peta rekam jejak yang telah diinjakkan oleh pasukan militer AS. Dianggap sebagai salah satu seniman visual kontemporer paling terkemuka di Thailand, Vasan adalah pencinta semangat dan tidak menahan satu inci pun untuk seninya.
