Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs. Monday 17th March 2025.

Prime Hoggs

A very much seasonal entry of hoggs were forward today, ranging from 29kg to 69kg with a large proportion being grass finished hoggs producing a very respectable market average of 340p/kg. Several consignments of well bred and well finished hoggs were keenly competed for and met by buyers approval selling to £205 for Texel cross from AG Butler, Hambleton, £196 for Charolais cross from KA Purtill, Wigan who sold Beltex cross at £189. Others achieved £187 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore and £185 from P Lawrenson, Chorley. Well finished standard weight hoggs continue to attract the keenest buyer attention regularly selling at £155 to £170, with grass finish hoggs, in weight specification, £140 to £155.

Today sale peaked at 422p/kg on three occasions for Beltex cross hoggs from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore and AG Butler, Hambleton. Closely followed by KA Purtill, Wigan selling the best of his at 420p/kg. Well finished in specification hoggs were generally 340p/kg to 370p.kg, with grass finished 330p/kg to 335p/kg.

Hill bred hoggs saw Mules sell to £140 and 324p/kg, Cheviots to £137 and 370p/kg, horned hoggs to £123 and 300p/kg. It is to vendors advantage to arrive in good time to allow hoggs to be pre sorted and weighed prior to the sale, which commences at 10am prompt.

Cast Sheep

As promised cull ewes were once again keenly competed for, with today’s sale averaging £153.50. The strongest continental cross ewes sold to £230 from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore who sold others at £220. M Beresford, Kirkby in Furness sold her best at £214 and £200. Medium continental ewes were regularly £150 to £180. Mules sold to £194 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with others at £162 from DJ&MC Platts, Caton. Other ewes today sold to £176 for Dorset from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore with Cheviot cross to £141 from DR Preston, Caton.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

Today sale comprised of 28 families, which continue to sell to the strong prices of recent weeks, buyers today showed preference towards ewes with stronger lambs. Aged Texel ewes with twin Texel cross lambs from TR Gorst, Bay Horse sold to £455, with others from the same good home regularly £365 to £400. Aged Suffolk cross ewes with twin Suffolk cross lambs sold to £340 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. £320 was achieved by E Parker, Mewith selling aged Dorset ewes with twin Texel cross lambs. A ring full of aged Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs sold at £315 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Ewes with singles sold to £275 for a Texel cross from E Parker, Mewith with others at £250 from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell with older ewes with younger lambs generally £175 to £200. Ewes and lambs will be sold every Monday at 11am, with fifty families already entered for next week.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

A tidy sale of 24 families mainly consisting of single lambs. Singles today were topping at £288 from John Woof, Sedbergh for a pen of Cheviot ewes with beltex Lambs. This followed with a run of singles of the same sort averaging £130 per life.

Twin numbers were less today with top price for twins at £300. Well grown lambs were extremely desirable today with customers eager to hit the early spring lamb trade.

Prime Hoggs- Demand for hoggs stays strong.

Junction 36 held its weekly sale of prime hoggs which saw the usual strong ringside of buyers faced with a large mixture of quality. Heavy sheep were met with slightly more resistance on the week, however handy weight types continue to be a very attractive trade

M & YS Barker sells 44kg hoggs to £190 or 431.8ppk. Lighter ones from the same home sold to £160.00. 39kg hoggs from Messers R T Colbear sold to £154. Good fed sheep also a joy to sell with Messers Butler getting £169 for a pen of 4 46kg Texels.

A pair of Charollais from the same and slightly lighter hit £160. Heavy sheep received less demand from buyers, however the fitter end was still a good trade. Messers Little sold to £187 for his heaviest end. The same home had a pen of 5 Suffolks at 54kg to make £173.

All classes of cull sheep maintained the buoyant trade of recent weeks with an overall average of £121 for a sale with over half the entry being pure hill bred ewes.

Pure continentals sold to £268 for Texels from W Garnett & Son with others at £262 from E Dodgson with other stronger ends £205-£245 and mediums £175-£200. First cross ewes sold to £210 with other stronger ends £170-£200 and mediums £150£170 with the leaner end £130-£145.

Mules sold to £202 from GA & M Robinson with heavier mules generally £170-£190, mediums £140-£165 and meated smaller ewes £125- £145.

Pure hill ewes sold to £182 for Cheviots, £135 for Rough Fells, £134 for Welsh, £108 for Swaledale, £108 for Dalesbred, £102 for Herdwicks. Medium horned ewes regularly £80-£100 with the smaller and leaner end £60-£75. Goats sold to £92 for Baggott nannies.

Cull rams sold to £220 for a Cheviot from LA & M Lambert with other mediums £170-£210 with lighter weights £140-£160, horned rams £125-£150.

A top price of £1380 for a pair of 10-month-old Luing x from SW Atkinson & Son who sold others at £1280 & £1260. Other steers sold to £1280 for 10-month-old Parathanise x from S Gelderd with many others £1100-£1250. Dairy bred steers sold to £1210 for 11-month-old Hereford x from Bellart Howe Farm with 9-month-old Simmental x at £1160 from S & M Carter and British Blue x at £1160 from AT Bainbridge. Younger steers nicely selling £850-£1000 with a run of Longho rn steers 7-9 months old from Lowther Farming sold to £880 with others at £860. Dairy bred steers sold to £970 for 10-month-old from Bellart Howe Farm.

Heifers: Limousin x heifers 9-month-old from AJ & L Birkett sold to £1170 closely followed by others from SW Atkinson at £1150. Dairy bred heifers sold to £1090 for a trio of 8-month-old British Blue x from Shuttleworth & Brown with 8-month-old Simmental x from A & CM Carter at £1060. Other heifers of both continental and native bred generally £850- £980 with several younger end heifers 6-month-old selling to £680 for British Blue x and 4-month-old to £600 for Limousin x and Aberdeen Angus.

Bulls: An entry of predominately younger bulls sold to £1350 for 7-month-old Limousin x from J & SE Woof. Well reared 6month-old British Blue x bulls sold to £920, this price also achieved for Montbeliarde. Aberdeen Angus x sold to £870 on several occasions. Dairy bulls sold to £640 for 6-month-old Black & Whites.

Dairy Heifers: A special entry of Black & White 7–8-month-old heifer stirks attracted keen buyer interest selling to £850 with others at £840, £810 & £800. More could have been easily sold.

Store Cattle- Where there’s muck there’s brass

Today’s store cattle sale featured a very mixed bag in terms of quality however to someone of partial vision this wouldn’t be obvious as big numbers rang out from the offset.

A really nice run of Limousin stores from Allan G Riley Ltd sold to £2260 and £2220 for heifers. Bullocks from the same home topped at £1980 at just 12 month old. Aberdeen Angus bullocks topped at £2040 for a pair from MT Howarth of Woodlea Farm. The same good home had their bullocks at £1880. Hereford heifers sored to £1980 again from Messrs Riley. Charolais heifers got to £1940 from JE Wightman.

The new and much-loved section for store bulls again produced an inspiring trade with buyers old and new ringside. Bank House Farms topped with Limousin bulls reaching £2190 at a year old. Younger Charolais at a mere 10-month-old sold to £1960 from RW Wilson of Gill Garth. Even younger Limousin bulls from CM & CS Chappelhow hit £1510 at just 7 month old of age.

The good, the bad and the ugly all sold exceptionally well at today’s sale with most types up yet again on our last sale. Please get in touch if you have any cattle to sell. You won’t believe the possibilities.

OTM Cattle

The cull cow trade stepped up another level at NWA J36, with an overall average of 240p/kg with over half the entry being dairy bred cows. Beef cows sold to a top of 294.5p/kg for a Stabiliser from J&J Beary Farming, Orton with Limousins at 289p/kg from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston and Aberdeen Angus at 274p/kg from RJ Walling, Windermere. Other beef cows today were predominately native bred generally 240p/kg to 260p/kg. Top grossing was a Limousin from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston achieving £2014, with a Hereford selling at £2002 from DJ&S Stainton, Howgill. Other beef cows were regularly £1500 to £1700. Young dairy cows sold to 309p/kg for a black and white from RJ&D Holden, Broughton in Furness. Other heavier well fleshed dairy cows were 240p/kg to 260p/kg, with parlour types 220p/kg to 235p/kg, with only the lightest and leanest 170p/kg to 195p/kg. Top grossing was a black and white from RJ&D Holden, Broughton in Furness achieving £1986, with another at £1938 from Jenkin Crag Farm, Kendal and £1883 from BR Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal. Meated dairy cows regularly £1350 to £1500.

Just a single cull stock bull today, being a Holstein Friesian selling at 199p/kg and £1959 from Messrs Ellwood, Kirkby in Furness.

An entry of half a dozen OTM dairy heifers sold to 309p/kg and £2107 from Stickland Hill Farming, Witherslack with others 230p/kg to 260p/kg and £1300 to £1500.

A pleasing entry of seven prime steers were greeted with buyers’ approval, selling to a top of 384p/kg for a Aberdeen Angus cross from Messrs Long & Knipe, Ulverston and British Blue cross from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton. Other heavy weight native sired steers were 360p/kg to 375p/kg. Top grossing being a Beef Shorthorn cross achieving £2745, with others at £2531, £2449 and £2445 (x2). Calves & Stirks- 70 Calves and weaned stirks sold to £1240.

Rearing calves sold to a top of £870 for a British Blue bull from JM&MH France, Littledale with other rearing bull calves to £750 and £740 from CR&A Baxter, Morecambe. Also at £740 was a Hereford bull from JR Newsham, Condor Green with this run topping the black and whites at £530. Younger sorts sold to £650 for a British Blue from JP&C Robson, Brock with others at £600 from MH&SJ Morris, Wraysholme.

Heifer calves sold to £590 for British Blues from CR Baxter & Son, Morecambe with others at £560 from JP&C Robson, Brock. A nice run from Pickervance Farms, Kirkham sold to £480 while Herefords reached £440 from MH&SJ Morris, Wraysholme.

Weaned stirks flew to £1240 for a Charolais bullock from D&J Hay, Cockerham with heifers from this nice run sold to £1120 and £1100. TD&A Gardner, Great Eccleston sold bulls to £890, with freshly weaned Montbeliardes to £730 from this same good home.
