NWA J36 ‘Lads Night Out’ Thursday 3rd September LADS NIGHT OUT SEES TOP PRICE OF £1250 FOR BREEDING RAMS The Annual ‘Lads Night Out’ prize show and sale of breeding rams at NWA J36 saw a catalogued entry of 616 attract buyers from throughout the United Kingdom from as far afield as Devon, West Wales and Scotland. The pre-sale show featured a superb line up of rams in all 8 classes for which the vendors must be congratulated. The championship rosette was awarded to a Suffolk shearling from J&C Airey, Ulverston which had enjoyed a successful summer at local shows achieving a final bid of £520 selling to Messrs Parkin, Maryport. A Texel shearling from GM Wilson, Lancaster stood a very close reserve and sold to CA & JA Alty & Son, Carnforth for £580. The sale’s top price of £1250 was achieved by James & Joe Wannop, Morecambe selling their first prize Beltex x Texel shearling to RA & C Benson, Ulverston. Suffolk shearlings peaked at £750 from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall. Earlier in the day a Charollais lamb from JD & V Towers & Son, Farleton sold to £300 with pure Beltex shearlings reaching £620 from PD &PJ Mason, Carnforth. A popular feature of the evening was the sale of individual females which saw and entry of 53 sell to keen interest topping at £400 for Texel shearlings from JT & J Kelsall, Clapham, Beltex x Char £290 from Messrs Wales, Carlisle and Suffolks to £180 from Messrs Ellwood, Grizebeck.

A sharper trade throughout for all cattle, with H Burkett & Son, Overton, selling a trio of Charollais to £1400. J & CG Redmayne sold a pen of 7 Angus Bullocks to £1290. Heifers to £1300 for a Blue from JD & GM Bracken, Garstang. Friesians sold to £1020 from T & E Burrow, Slyne.

A small entry of Calves this morning unfortunately with both buyers and sellers pushing to get the last of their crop. Black and Whites calves sold to a flying trade, topping at £178 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cocker House, with a run of 5 exceptional calves from Messers Smith to average £170. Best calves regularly up and over £140 with younger sorts £62-£100. Only a handful of beef calves sold to £325 for a Charolais Bull from EA & E Lund, Pump House and Angus Bulls to £285 from Wallbank Farms. A few Black and White stirks from Jones Sandvilla sold to £235.

Breeding Sheep The second sale of breeding ewes and gimmer shearlings at Lancaster plus the sale of breeding rams had a good trade throughout with a virtually 100% clearance. Breeding rams sold to £320 for a shapely Beltex cross from Matthew Joel of Dolphinholme. Suffolk rams twice sold to £300 both from David Preston of Caton. Regular consigner Alison Lee of Arkholme sold strong Charollais rams to £260. A small entry of breeding ewes saw all ewes selling to their value, with Texel two crop ewes selling to £111 and £116 for Suffolk 2 crop ewes both from David Preston of Caton. Mule shearlings in strong demand and eagerly bid for topping at £138 from Joe Townley of Mearsbeck, with others to £137 from EI Wilson of Flookburgh with a respectable sale average of £127. Suffolk shearlings topped at £115 from BJ Bowness of Blea Tarn.

Monday 8th September A good show of Prime Lambs this morning with 1385 passing through the ring. Trade sharper, with an 11pence rise on the week, to average 158ppk. Topping trade was PD Pye, Marl House, with two smart Beltex lambs, realising 186ppk. Top price per head came from AJ Ellis, Staveley with a heavy weight Texel making £92.50. In general 42-44kg £22-25 above their weight. Suffolks sold to a top of £85.50 again for a heavy weight from H Birkett & Son, North Farm. Mules sold to £69 from WI & AM Atkinson, Holme House.

A bumper entry of Cast Ewes this morning, with 256 forward. Trade topped at £92 for a pair of Texel Ewes from Ken Kelsall, Brown Brook. Mules sold to £66 from JM Sanderson, Halton. A big draw of hill ewes this week, topped at £49 from WI & AM Atkinson. Sheep with meat easy to sell, with plain sheep harder to place.

A nice entry of 1 Clean Cattle and 13 Pime Bulls this morning. Clean sold to 194.5ppk for a Blue Heifer from P & A Bell, Pilling. Prime Bulls sold to 181.5ppk on three occasions, from JS & KM Wilson, High House, with a Charollais, and then twice from S & BM Lawrenson, Eagland Hill with a Blue and a Limousin.

J36 Sale Reports Thursday 3rd September The weekly sale of Calves sale had another good entry with plenty of top quality beef calves on offer. The trade saw stronger and best quality beef calves a slightly easier trade then seen over previous months with J36 enjoying very strong trades. Calves still sold in excess of £400 topping at £415 for two month old British bulls from V & EJ Chadwick and Sons of Sowerby Lodge, Charolais bull calves sold to £410 from DN Smith of Fell House. Heifer calves sold to £400 from V & EJ Chadwick and Sons of Sowerby Lodge with a British Blue heifer. Younger and smaller types of beef calves remain a strong trade and eagerly bid for around the ring. A large proportion of black and white bull calves mainly between 2 and 3 weeks old regularly sold between £60 and £80 with older and better types easily selling over the £100 mark. Dairy Shorthorn bull calves required around the ring at J36 selling to £155 from John Handley of School House. A mixed entry of Stirks sold to a mixed trade. Four month old well grown Angus bulls from Peter and Susan Robinson of Claughton on Brock sold to £435 with heifers from the same home selling to £405. An entry of 4 month old Black and White bulls sold to £240 and £225 from M Gibson of Mouse Syke. The weekly sale of Store Lambs were greeted with an improved optimism with buyers competing for all types of lambs from beginning to end. Best short keep lambs regularly £56-£59 with medium keep £51-£55. Hill lambs coming forward in greater numbers selling to £52, Mules generally £43 - £47, horned lambs looking well sold at £36 - £42. A few ram lambs on offer mostly in small lots ranging from £42 - £50 depending on breed and size. Beef Breeding cattle saw a BBx cow with CHx calf at foot sell to £1400 with other outfits £1100 - £1200. A reduced number of store cattle forward ahead of the Autumn Show and sale on Thursday 17th saw Simx steers sell to £960 with yearling heifers of the same breeding at £780. Young bulls sold to £915 for best young limx sucklers. All Cast Cows sold to a market average of 97.5p/kg with a large portion of the sale being parlour type cows. Well fleshed dairy cows 115p/kg – 125p/kg with beef cows selling to 149p/kg and others generally 130p/kg +.

Rare Breeds & Poultry Sale Saturday 5th September The annual autumn sale of rare breed livestock and poultry once again attracted a wide and varied selection of entries with buyers attending keen to secure additional stock and fresh bloodlines. The sale of livestock saw record entries and stock achieving prices above vendor’s expectations. Breeding ewes sold to £80 for Portland shearlings, coloured Ryeland ewes £210, Herdwick gimmer lambs £58, Kerry Hill ewes £122, Jacob ewes £100, Shetland gimmer lambs £60, Hedridean gimmer lambs £50, Lincon Longwool shearlings £130, Hampshire ewes £110, Badger Faced Welsh ewes £92, Zwartble ram lambs £105. Alpine nanny goat and kid £190, Golden Gurnsey kid £50. Red Poll cow and calf £780, Coloured filly foal £350. The sale of poultry, eggs and equipment once again saw an entry in excess of 300 lots selling to a crowded ringside of buyers. Hatching eggs sold to £16 for 1doz Lemon Brahams. Ducks sold to a top price of £40 for a pair of Carolina and also a pair if Blonde Mandarins. Snowflake Quail sold at £42 for a pair with Pouter pigeons £22 for breeding pairs. Bantams achieved saw a trio of Gold Sebrights £46, Silver Layced Wyandotte pullets £30 and a trio of Black Silkies £50. Large fowl achieved £70 for 3 Silver Appenzeller pullets, £30 Barred Rock pullets, £38 RIR pullets £45 Light Sussex pullets, £55 Maran pullets.

North West Texel Breeders Club Show & Sale of Pedigree Texels Monday 7th September Texels Sell to 1600gns at NWA J36 The 3rd annual Show & Sale of pedigree Texel Sheep on behalf of the North West Texel Breeders Club was held on Monday 7th September at NWA J36 Rural Auction Centre. Judging was conducted by Mrs Jill Perrings, Settle, who had a superb entry of sheep before her in all three classes. The Championship rosette was awarded to the first prize Gimmer Shearling from Mr R Bradley, Barnoldswick, sired by Anglezarke Uno, which sold for a final call of 1200gns to Mr RG Blackburn, Lancashire. The sale topping price of 1600gns was achieved for the first prize Ram Lamb from J Robinson, Kaker Mill, sired by Sportsman Tremendous II and purchased by R Stevenson, Carlisle. Shearling Rams peaked twice at 680gns from Procters Farm Ltd. Price Summary

Northern Area Charollais Sheep Society Show & Sale Monday 7th September A great show of sheep judged very kindly and with great professionalism by Ann Loftus. The winner of the James Huddleston Trophy and championship was awarded to FH & M Kennedy, Wester Parkgate with a fantastic well grown Shearling Ram by the Champion Junior Stock Ram from South of Scotland Flock Competition Parkgate Nailer, with reserve Champion going to the same good home. Prices didn’t reflect the quality of sheep forward with the top price of 360gns and 350gns going to D & J Normans Kirkhouse flock for two Kirkhouse Optimus sons, the Fosters flock also attained 350gns twice. Kenton Foster topped the Shearling Rams 350gns. Females were up to 350gns for a classy ewe from Stephen Pickthalls Aldby flock, gimmer shearlings to 280gns from D & J Norman and 240gns from Stephen Pickthall. Ewe lambs peaked at 260gns with a smart lamb from I M Jaeban with a lamb by a Kirkhouse sire.

Tuesday 8th September With 140 Pigs forward prices were slightly depressed with good quality finished pigs selling to £125 per head from J Woodburn and Partners, Mansrigg Hall, £118 from R Strong, Row Moor, £102 A Horn, Lower Grisburn. Sows sold to £60 from J Woodburn, £55 JH & E Ivenson, Plumpton Foot. Weaners were harder to move topping at £32 per head for a nice pen of coloured weaners from DB & RM Willison, Moffinber. The Weekly sale of Prime Lambs saw best meated lambs 150p/kg – 170p/ kg topping at 179p/kg for Texel x from WJ & LA Barker, heavy weight lambs 130p/kg – 145p/kg. A market average of 146p/kg was achieved for all sold with weights ranging from 31kgs to 58kgs. A top price of £77.50 per head was paid for a pen of Texels from AR & CA Fawcett. Mules topped at £64.50 (144p/kg) and pure hill lambs £57.50 (Rough Fell). Buyers continue to show caution to under finished and non-farm assured lambs.

The Cast Ewe trade at J36 was slightly sharper today than that of the previous week. Some better quality Continental ewes forward sold to £103 from I Ridding of Old Hutton with plenty of ewes selling into the nineties. Mule ewes generally selling in the late sixties, with better types of ewes selling to £74 from J Fell of Old Hutton. Rough Fell ewes sold to £60 from W Atkinson & Son of Low Fold, smaller plainer ewes in strong demand especially feeding ewes.
