LETTER FROM THE EDITOR "de gustibus non est disputandum" I remember like it was yesterday—seeing this phrase scrawled on the yellow–dusted chalkboard in my seventh–grade Latin classroom. "Concerning taste, let there be no dispute," my teacher translated for us. I chewed on this for a while. In my prepubescent brain, there was such thing as bad taste. In fact, it seemed all too common. Taste? And what about it? In many ways, our Best of Penn issue is all about taste. Not taste in the capital T sense of the word, but the taste that makes you say, "Why don't we go to this place instead of that place?" while you're debating a lunch spot with your friends. The type of taste that creates habits, forms suggestions, and dictates a person's Penn Nick Joyner, Editor–in–Chief Remi Lederman, Managing Editor Angela Huang, Audience Engagement Director Annabelle Williams, Assignments Editor Autumn Powell, Media Director Cat Dragoi, Word on the Street Editor Caroline Riise, Ego Editor Jamie Gobreski, Music Editor Colin Lodewick, Senior Features Editor Sabrina Qiao, Special Features Editor Andreas Pavlou, Long–Term Features Editor Naomi Elegant, Developing Features Editor Liz Kim, Style Editor Ana West, Film & TV Editor Sherry Tseng, Arts Editor Eliana Doft, Lastpage Editor Ethan Wu, Photo Editor Morgan Potts, Copy Director Christopher Muracca, Print Director Ego Beats: Sophie Xi, Amanpreet Singh, Michelle Shen, Misty Liao, Katie Bontje Music Beats: Arjun Swaminathan, Sammy Gordon, Sophie Burkholder, Melannie Jay, Aleksei Kuryla, Srinidhi Ramakrishna, Shriya Beesam
experience. The taste that structures everyday life. Best of Penn is our way of collecting all of y'all's favorites in one place, of trying to synthesize some sort of campus taste profile. It's not gospel, but it tries to approach it. It gets to the heart of what makes Penn students tick, in the most democratic way possible. And for that, I want to thank all of our loving readers who showed up at the Google Form polls to cast their votes. And if you have disagreements with your classmates' selections (or ours for that matter), just remember that ancient Latin maxim: "de gustibus non est disputandum." And if you're seriously ticked off, feel free to mail me a strongly worded postcard.

FOOD
Best Food Truck Penn's Choice: Magic Carpet Over 30 years old and still going strong, Magic Carpet is practically a Penn institution. Fresh, healthy, and undeniably comforting, Magic Carpet serves up globally–inspired vegetarian and vegan food. Choose between one of the two food trucks: one at Lower Quad Gate, and the other at Meyerson Courtyard on 34th Street. On any given day between 12 and 2, you’ll find the line of shivering students stretched down Spruce, hungrily awaiting their falafel and hummus. Boasting everything from Middle Eastern classics like tabouli and baba ganouj to creative vegan fare like spicy seitan pepper–steak and tofu meatballs, Magic Carpet has something for everyone. Is it worth the wait? Answer me after you dive into a steaming falafel bowl or bite into a flakey spinach & feta pie. Snag a chocolate chip cookie as you checkout–––vegan, gluten–free and baked fresh every morning, it’s the perfect sweet treat to round out your feast. Address: 36th and Spruce Streets, southwest corner; 34th and Walnut Streets, southwest corner Hours: Sat–Sun: Closed Mon–Fri: 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Street's Choice: Chez Yasmine Of all the food trucks lining the stretch of Spruce bordering the Quad, none provide food and service nearly as refined as Chez Yasmine. Run by Jihed Chehimi––whom Street has profiled in the past––this campus fixture focuses on using local, fresh produce to make its healthy, often vegetarian– and vegan–friendly, dishes. Fan favorites include the vegetable couscous plate, the chicken wistar, and an array of banh mi sandwiches. Using ingredients like herbes de provence and black olive paste, your meal is bound to feel a bit more elevated than the average chicken over rice bowl. In addition to creating interesting dishes, Chehimi makes a point to get to know his regular customers. Next to each menu item are the names of different Penn students who frequently order the item. Every meal comes with free water and a piece of fruit. You can also Venmo—what’s more to ask after waiting in line just long enough that you’ll definitely be walking into your foreign language class in Williams three minutes late? Best Pizza Penn's Choice: &pizza From your first glance at &pizza’s clean black–and–white color scheme and neon lighting, you can tell it’s not your typical college pizza hub. &pizza’s location on 39th and Walnut opened earlier this year and instantly became the newest late–night hot spot. It’s probably due to the fact that their pizza, made from scratch in front of you, is so good that you don’t need to be drunk at 3 a.m. to enjoy it. If you’re feeling lazy, choose from popular creations like American Honey and Pineapplejack, or build your own pizza by deciding from a variety of fresh options for the sauce, cheese, and toppings. Most of &pizza’s menu is $11 and under, which is a fairly reasonable price for the amount of food you’re getting.

Street Choice:
Some Penn students tend not to venture past 41st Street or explore Baltimore Avenue. However, sitting on the corner, right across from the Saturday farmer's market, is Clarkville, a restaurant with incredible pizza, an amazing beer selection, and extremely relaxed vibes. If you’re looking for something small, the starters are delicious, ranging from warm cauliflower salad with kale and pickled onions to meatballs, roasted mushrooms, and beets. But the pizzas absolutely steal the show. Whether you’re feeling simple and want some plain slices, or you’re willing to venture into the creative world of the Honey Pie and White Pie, you will not regret your decision. The pizza is $15, but definitely enough to split with a friend and still leave satisfied. This amazing restaurant is the perfect setting for all your weekend brunch or weekday dinner desires.

Best Food Deal Penn’s Choice: Lyn’s Sandwiches Lyn’s is an indisputable campus staple. If the food truck is gone for even a few weeks, Penn students all but riot. Parked right in front of the Quad, Penn students get hooked from day one. After all, where else can you get a bagel egg and cheese sandwich for $2.50? Lyn knows how to get just the right amount of hot sauce that will keep you coming back every Friday after waking up hungover. But don’t forget to bring cash—Lyn hasn’t added Venmo or credit cards to her payment methods. She’s still an icon though, so we can forgive her. Street’s Choice: Copa Burger Deal Copabanana, the popular Mexican restaurant on 40th Street, has long been beloved by many Penn students for the array of flavor choices and overall cheapness of their margaritas. But, if you’re willing to make an appearance in the middle of the day, they also have great deals on food. On Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., their wide array of burgers—which includes unlimited toppings and highly praised vegan and seafood options—are all served half–off. (And if it’s just one of those Wednesdays where you need a midday marg to go with, nobody will judge.)

Best Drexel Food Spot Penn's Choice: Shake Shack The famous New York–based Shake Shack has three Philadelphia locations, and while the spots in the Gayborhood or the Wells Fargo Center might be a little wilder, University City’s own Shake Shack is laid–back and spacious, with an upstairs dining room and plenty of outdoor seating for warm nights. Shake Shack offers all the classics that make it beloved nationwide— Shackburgers, ‘Shroomburgers, hot dogs, and cheese fries—as well as Philly–specific custard mixers made with locally sourced ingredients. They also have shuffleboard and Quizzo every Wednesday night.

Street's Choice: Blaze Pizza It’s like Chipotle, but pizza. The world of “build your own” has now extended to the world of pizza, and it does not disappoint. Located on Drexel’s campus, Blaze Pizza allows you to create your own pizza or choose one of their signature pies. We all know what one person loves on a ‘za can be despised by another (think pineapple), but Blaze’s toppings bar can satisfy any craving. There are 11 sauces to choose from, and meats range from your standard sausage and pepperoni to turkey meatballs. Veggies include peppers of various color and spice levels, artichokes, broccoli, and more; cheeses even include a vegan–friendly option. But what really makes Blaze pizza outstanding is the open–flame–oven that bakes your meal in about three minutes. Fast, customizable, and not about to empty your wallet (a two–topping pizza is $7.75), Blaze is the ideal place for a snack break. Before you leave, don’t forget dessert—I had a chocolate chip cookie with sea salt that made me wonder how something so simple could be so good. Best Drunk Food Penn's Choice: Wishbone At any point in your party process—whether you’re trying to fill up your stomach, already several shots deep, or so hungover you can barely think—there is nothing better than good, old–fashioned fried food, and no better spot to get it than Wishbone. Conveniently (or not so conveniently) located a short stumble away from the frat houses on 40th and Locust, Wishbone serves fried chicken tenders, artisanal fried chicken sandwiches like Korean BBQ and Bacon–Avo, and mac ‘n’ cheese. They’re open until 3 a.m. on weekends, making Wishbone the perfect refuge from your long night out.

Street's Choice: FroGro Open 24/7, the vast emporium of food that is The Fresh Grocer is always at your disposal, no matter how late it is when you stumble out onto the streets of University City. Along the walls of this complex maze of aisles (let’s hope that drunk you is able to navigate), there is no shortage of appropriate drunk foods, from Pop–Tarts to sliced bread, and if you somehow gain access to a spoon, a jar of Skippy is sure to be the perfect way to top off your night. The sheer number of choices might hold you up a bit longer than you intended, but don’t worry—once you’ve accidentally wandered into the produce section for the third time, you’ll be ready to call it a night. If you’re aching to chow down on a bowl of microwavable noodles or a bag of Tostitos with the obligatory Hint of Lime, make for the self–checkout and bounce on out of there.

Best Date Spot Street's Choice: Charlie was a sinner.
Penn's Choice: Ramen Bar
Charlie was a sinner. is an all vegan bar located in the beautiful Midtown Village of Philadelphia. The name of this restaurant alludes to the fact that its building previously functioned as a strip club. Nowadays, this bar is renowned for its tapas–style small plates and an exquisite collection of strong cocktails. A perfect date spot, this late–night kitchen serves food until 1 a.m. every day. The environment here resembles that of a boutique speakeasy where bartenders are knowledgeable, whimsical, and attentive. The founder of this restaurant, Nicole Marquis, is also the owner of plant–based fast casual restaurant chain HipCityVeg. Legend has it that the fresh (vegan) ingredients are an aphrodisiac.
A cult favorite on Penn’s campus, Ramen Bar is the place to be for a hot bowl of noodles on a cold winter afternoon. With big portions and a cozy atmosphere, this ramen restaurant is the perfect spot to bring your boyfriend, crush, or hookup. Students can try a wide variety of traditional selections, like chicken miso ramen, gyoza, or tsukemen "dipping noodles." You can even follow the restaurant on Facebook @ramenbarphilly for the inside scoop on new offerings. And with two locations, one on Drexel's campus (3400 Lancaster Ave.), you’ll never have to walk far for Ramen Bar.

Best Smoke Spot Penn's Choice: BioPond
Street's Choice: The DRL Rooftop
Smoke that green while surrounded by greenery at the BioPond. Conveniently located near the Quad, right of Hamilton Walk near 38th Street, this hidden urban oasis is the perfect place for freshmen to find their cannaBliss away from their RAs. It’s pretty possible that you’re a senior and still have never been. Trust us, it’s worth a trip (pun intended). Stare in awe at the myriad of tree species. Giggle at the frogs, fish, and turtles swimming in the pond. Observe the wildlife that is other Penn students smoking or hooking up.
You just finished your 3 p.m. in Towne on a Monday and you’ve just had enough. You’re craving a smoke break, but you have a 4 p.m. in DRL and there is NO way you’re walking another ten blocks to smoke at home. The DRL rooftop is for you. Head on up to the top floor of DRL, open some random doors until you find the boiler room, and climb up to the most chill rooftop on 33rd Street. Soak up some sun and THC while staring out at the Philadelphia skyline. Address: 209 S 33rd St., Philadelphia, PA 19104

Penn's Choice: Penn Park What’s more public than Penn Park? Situated on the far eastern side of campus, Penn Park feels like an escape from campus, but is convenient to get to. Best Vom Spot Street's Choice: Outside of the Dental School
Penn's Choice: Abandoned Lot Next to Blarneys
Definitely one of the more underrated spots on campus, the Dental School has a very convenient location in the block between Smokes'/McDonald's and Allegro/Copa, meaning that you could be leaving a drinking location to go to a food location, and have a spot to quickly pull trig if needed. The Dental School isn’t exactly a place where people congregate, so you’ll save yourself the pain of puking in front of strangers. And most of all, you'll be reminded to stop getting into these puking situations, considering the damage it can do to your pearly whites.
Having one of those nights where it be like that sometimes? The abandoned parking lot next to Blarney’s is a tranquil and quiet place to let it all out. Whether or not your best friend is holding your hair and giving you words of encouragement, this vom spot is bound to be a more positive experience than most. Unlike a hookup, this abandoned lot is always reliable and will never let you down. Address: 3929 Sansom St., Philadelphia, PA 19104

Best Places to Pee On–Campus Penn's Choice: Benjamin Franklin Statue As a physical structure, this spot earns points for its waist level height, which makes it an easy target. Then consider the history: for decades, the legendary urination spot has been christened by hundreds of Penn students before you. The cameras specifically to catch Ben on a Bench pranksters only adds to the thrill. While peeing on Ben may seem embarrassing, as Mr. Franklin said himself, “there are no gains without pains.”

Best On-Campus Housing Penn's Choice:
The Quad
You know it when you see it. Old and classic with its curlicue carvings and time–worn brick, this freshman favorite comes with your choice of mold or the occasional cockroach infestation or disgusting bathrooms. But physical living conditions aside, the Quad wins as the crowning glory for a quintessential freshman experience. Who wants to live in sterile New College House when you can savor the joys of trashing a lounge or room during in–house parties? Surely said lounge or dorm has already seen worse anyways. Who wants to live in a newly renovated Hill when you can get live midnight entertainment by listening to your neighbors through paper thin walls? You’re living in a dorm, did you expect privacy? Let’s not forget the view. While all creaky hallways and aged, musty wood on the inside, the Quad does sport its own picnic–worthy green space, shaded by foliage on the edges and perfect for a day outdoors. Did I mention in–house food? McClelland, while not as generous in its offerings as other dining halls, does have convenient late–night hours and decent variety. What’s not to love about a midnight breakfast shared with friends? At your home during the best moments of your college life, no less.

Here’s the deal. New College House West does. Not. Exist. Yet. All the more reason it deserves to be top vote. As you and I both know, Penn has always been skilled at meeting, or even exceeding, students’ expectations when it comes to housing. So let’s make our standards clear here, shall we? Three words: Five. Star. Hotel. And when I say five–star hotel, I mean five–star hotel. On– campus, at Penn. I mean floor–to–ceiling windows and walk–in closets and individual suites per person with flat screen TVs and granite countertop–equipped kitchens to boot. I mean rooftop swimming pools and decked–out gyms with spa facilities and room service and chandelier–hanging lobbies with live piano music playing in the background. I mean 500 thread–count linen sheets and pure cotton bathrobes and little hotel style slippers printed with the Penn logo so students can better walk on the plush carpeting that I know for sure each room will have. I mean, we’re in college. You’re not here to learn or get an education. You’re here to have fun.

Best Philly Neighborhood Penn's Choice: Fishtown Situated in the northeast and sidelined by the Delaware River, Fishtown has hip nightlife, a great food scene, and residents who probably all listen to Sufjan Stevens. Best Floor of Pottruck Penn's Choice:
3rd Floor
As you walk into Pottruck, barely escaping the crisp fall air, the first thing you see is the first floor gym. Your eyes barely adjust to the oppressive, artificial, yellowish lights from above. This is no place to work out. Suddenly, you’re scrambling towards the natural light, up the two flights of stairs, and you arrive: the third floor. Here, in the Pilates room, the glimmering wood floors expand out indefinitely. There are mats hanging everywhere, just for your taking. There are mirrors on ¾ of the walls, so you can admire your beautiful body, and the last wall of paneled glass lets in a flood of natural light. In the gym next door, there are ample treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and weights for your choosing. On the third floor, you can tower over campus and get a bird’s eye view of what others are doing with their morning as you work out, but with an added sense of superiority from your impressive height. You are transformed into an inspiring and graceful dancer, athlete, and go–getter.

If the third floor reaches for the stars in Pottruck, the basement sauna grounds you and brings you back down to Earth. As you descend underground into the basement, you feel as if you’re walking through a military bunker. Seamlessly, you emerge near the massive swimming pool, the air fills with chlorine, and you hear the water lapping up against the edges of the concrete, lulling you into a trance. Tucked away and often unheard of, Pottruck keeps a simple, yet elegant, warm wood box near the end of the pool. With a few stones, a turn of a water, and a deep inhale, this box can transform your stressed–out mind into an inner zen garden. Just got your midterm back and didn’t do so hot? Give yourself a break, throw a towel over that beautiful body of yours, and hop into the sauna. This relaxing getaway can immediately transport you from the chilly, oppressive Penn campus to a luxurious ski lodge on a mountain in Switzerland.

Penn's Choice: Penn Bookstore Probably the first place you ever went to on Penn’s campus, the Penn Bookstore is the home of all things Red & Blue. Filled with Penn apparel, the bookstore is the best place to feed your Penn pride. With the clothing inventory constantly changing, you can always find something new and turn any item into a special gift for a fellow Quaker. Although the merchandise is typically on the more expensive side, the bookstore has great sales almost every week, making even the higher–priced sweatshirts affordable. In addition to apparel, the bookstore has Penn branded accessories, school supplies, dorm essentials, and more. While many of us equate the bookstore with Penn branded merch, believe it or not the bookstore actually has an incredible selection of books! From inspiring memoirs to delicious cookbooks from local Philly restaurants, a book can make for a great thoughtful gift.
