The Tuscawilla Spring Art Park Series consists of three events through March 2021 that pairs together music, art activities and good food. For the January event, Bluegrass and BBQ, enjoy live musical performances by bluegrass musicians Trinity River Band and Pasture Prime as well as local artisans, a cash bar and food from Big Lee’s Serious About BBQ food truck. The event takes place from 6-9pm, and tickets are $5 per person. To purchase tickets, visit ocalafl.org/artpark. AFTER DARK IN THE PARK // JANUARY 8
The City of Ocala Recreation and Parks Department will host the 2021 After Dark in the Park movie series on select Fridays throughout the year at various parks across the city. For January, the film shown will be A Fistful of Dollars, which will take place at 7pm at the Fort King National Historic Landmark, located at 3925 E Fort King Street. This film is rated R. These events are free and open to the public. Popcorn, drinks and other refreshments will be available for purchase. Those planning to attend are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. THREE
The Florida Fun Mini Match, hosted by Dance Dance Dance and Equistaff, is a competition for dancers of all ages. This event is in its eighth year and showcases competitors performing waltz, tango, foxtrot, salsa and two step dance styles. Proceeds benefit the Marion Therapeutic Riding Association and help raise awareness for the organization’s services, possible through competitor and spectator attendance, event sponsors and donors to the silent auction. I HATE HAMLET // JANUARY 14-FEBRUARY 7 The Ocala Civic Theatre is proud to host this comedy by Paul Rudnick. In the show, the character Andrew Rally dreams of TV stardom. But when he moves back to New York from L.A., he is cast as Hamlet—and he hates Hamlet. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for ages 18 and younger. Snow in Florida? You heard that right! Head to Kirby Family Farm in Williston for this second annual snow party. Slide down the snow slide on real sleds with real snow; ride the train; enjoy pony rides, the Ferris wheel and merry-go-round; bounce in the bounce houses and visit Bell’s Barnyard and Exotic Animals. Watch live dancers perform, or attend the first annual Snow Queen Pageant. There will be food trucks and craft vendors for added fun. Tickets are $10 online and $12 at the gate, and tickets are limited, so get yours today. All proceeds benefit the Kimberly Morales Memorial Foundation, Inc., which was started after the death of Kimberly Morales, who was in an ATV accident and passed away January 23, 2019. The Florida Manatee Festival returns this month to downtown Crystal River. Spanning both sides of Citrus Avenue, the 2021 Florida Manatee Festival boasts live music on three stages, two food courts, two beer and wine gardens, manatee boat tours, a fine art walk, craft vendor and a kids’ zone. To ensure the safety of festival guests and vendors, health protocols will be in place, including sanitization stations throughout the festival grounds, 6-foot spacing between all booths and open sidewalks and breezeways for guests to maneuver comfortably. Nothing is s’more fun than roasting marshmallows and singing around the fire. Head to Sholom Park for S’mores and More for a good, ol’-fashioned campfire sing-a-long and acoustic performance by local musician Mark Smythe from Gypsy Sparrow. Registration is required, and the event begins at 6pm. Gates open at 5:15pm, and tickets are $15 per person. Lawn chairs, blankets, flashlights and lanterns are recommended. The Humane Society of Marion County presents a one-night charity event at the Ocala Drive-In. Visit with vendors and adoptable pups. Your furry friends are welcome and can visit the pupcession stands. All pets must stay on leash when not in your personal vehicle. The movie The Secret Life of Pets will be shown at 7pm, and A Dog’s Purpose will be shown at 9pm. Gates open at 5pm for a pre-movie market. Tickets are sold at the gate and are $6 for adults and $3 for children. Get a free pupcorn at the gate with an extra donation. Outside food and drinks are not permitted. WINTER POLO SEASON // SUNDAYS THROUGH FEBRUARY Come out and enjoy a polo match at the Florida Horse Park every Sunday through February. The matches take place at 1pm each day. The Florida Horse Park is the perfect place to enjoy a tailgate with your friends and family, and tailgates can be reserved by email at ocalapolo@gmail.com. If you’re interested in getting off the sidelines and into the saddle, polo lessons are available with coach David Eldredge and practice chukkers and lessons are held weekly. The second running of the Love of a Horse Ocala 5K will take place at 8am with live and virtual options. The live race will start and finish at the Equine Medical Center of Ocala and will have safety protocols in place. The 5K benefits the Foundation for the Horse, a group with over 25 years dedicated to improving the welfare of horses through education and research. arlee Kunkle, the senior communications manager for Lake Nona developer Tavistock, says health and well-being have been a part of the development’s master plan since the beginning. “Things like sidewalks, green spaces and pocket parks enhance a healthy lifestyle,” she says. “But it’s not just about physical health; it’s also about spiritual and emotional health, and art plays an important role in that.” For your next date night, why not take the short trip south to Lake Nona to enjoy a day of shopping, dining and culture. All can be found at Lake Nona. Karlee suggests starting your outing at Lake Nona Town Center. There you’ll find the newly opened Boxi Park, a family- and dog-friendly mix of restaurants and bars. Outdoor and covered spaces allow for plenty of distancing, and the area features an outdoor stage with live entertainment, beach volleyball, a playground and more. Karlee calls it a deconstructed food court. After sampling the cuisine, work off the calories by taking a stroll through Lake Nona to check out the various art installments. Here’s a few must-sees, according to Karlee.
The Beacon & Code Wall
LAKE NONA TOWN CENTER The Beacon & Code Wall The Beacon, a six-story landmark looks like a white cylindrical tower by day. At night, though, The Beacon comes to life with an interactive video and music experience. The piece was created in partnership by Lake Nona artist JEFRE, New York-based Michael Counts and 3-Legged Dog. This holiday season, Peppermint the Penguin comes to life. The adjacent parking garage features the Code Wall. The ones and zeros on the wall represent messages written in binary code, and visitors are encouraged to interpret the messages using the nearby plaques as clues. 8

Disco the Dog This 35-foot-tall stainless-steel sculpture is modeled after a Labrador retriever and is situated near the Town Center’s main parking structure. The sculpture was designed by local artist JEFRE and features a fractal, reflective surface that replicates the wave action of Lake Nona. Prismatic Mural Located near the Code Wall, Prismatic was designed by local artist and Tavistock Senior Graphic Designer Carissa Bloemeke. The design was inspired by the colors in a prism and represents a deconstructed prism, according to Carissa’s statement on the Lake Nona webpage. “[It’s] almost as if someone clapped their hands and particles of colors from a rainbow dispersed, flew around and landed on the wall to create a new pattern,” she says. It’s impossible to miss the vibrant-colored rectangles. Inside the building is Lake Nona’s new chiller plant, a centralized system that provides cool air to neighboring businesses. The design features 20 colors to represent 2020, the year the mural was installed. Pixon Art Pixon features 200 residential units plus a 33,850 ground-floor retail space. The spaces feature a selection of colorful murals, sculptures and digital art projects made out of spray paint, digital art and chalk. The dozens of pieces were created by three talented artists, Cecilia Lueza, Carissa Bloemeke and LeDania and are scattered throughout the building’s interior and exterior. LAUREATE PARK VILLAGE CENTER The Glass House Brooklyn-based artist Tom Fruin’s Glass House features reclaimed materials and is inspired by a sustainable urban design. The piece takes on the qualities of stained glass and is especially beautiful at sunset according to Karlee. The nearby Canvas Restaurant features American cuisine with a nod to Florida’s Southern and Latin roots and is the perfect place to catch dinner before heading back home for the evening.

THE CANYONS ZIP LINE AND ADVENTURE PARK You wouldn’t know you were right here in Ocala when visiting The Canyons Zip Line and Adventure Park. The vast elevation changes, deep canyons, spring-fed lakes and beautiful cliffs are more reminiscent of a mountain community. And the zips and other adventure-filled opportunities will leave you feeling exhilarated and energized. “Our zip line courses are designed to start you off low and slow so you build your confidence up for the longest and highest zips in Florida,” says Jessie Walker, retail and marketing director of the Canyons Zip Line and Adventure Park. “Our professionally trained guides will show you how and be there to encourage you every step of the way! Kids must be at least 70 pounds to zip, but we do offer other adventures for smaller kids as well, such as tandem kayaking and gem mining.” For the adventure seekers, the popular 1,100-foot zip takes participants across Lost Spring Lake, and the view is second to none. The Big Cliff Canyon tour offers nine zips, the Treetop Express five zips and the Sky High three zips. The park also offers night zipping on full moon evenings, kayaking tours,

zip lines and 10 to 17 obstacles, including rope swings, suspension bridges, rope walls and more. In the end, a 500-foot tower-to-tower zip line race provides even more excitement. The course uses a secure Clic-It system with two lanyards, and Vic says climbers are unable to disconnect from the system until they are safe on the ground. A guide is also always within ear and eye shot, even though your climb is a self-guided, go-atyour-own adventure. For the young adventures, ages 5 to 8, the Little Ninja Kids Adventure Course is ground level and includes lots of fun obstacles. “This is a great bonding experience,” says Vic. “It’s a wonderful way to get outdoors and challenge yourself.”

ORLANDO TREE TREK ADVENTURE PARK
FLG X ADVENTURE COURSE If you’re feeling up for a challenge, the FLG X Adventure Course in Brooksville is the most challenging in the state. The park sits on 48 secluded acres, and the course is spread over 10 of those acres. The adventure begins just 10-feet off the ground with the green course. Junior climbers ages 9-11 can participate on the green and blue course with adult supervision. Adults and those 12 and over can advance to the red course. According to Senior Guide Vic McFadden, only about 5 percent of guests attempt the final 80-foot black course and only 3 percent complete it. “It’s really mind over matter,” she says. “Ours is a progressive course that gradually gets higher. It tests you mentally and physically and shows you what you’re made of.” Each course is a combination of multiple

Gardens In Bloom No trip to Tallahassee would be complete without a visit to Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park. // B Y K A R I N F A B R YCUSHENBERY
A
lthough most flowers lie dormant in our coldest months of the year, the camellia is not like normal flowers. These intricate, delicate buds begin to show themselves in January and continue to bloom through early spring. And Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park in Tallahassee is where to see them in all their glory. A wealthy banker, Alfred Maclay was originally from New York. A 1923 trip to Tallahassee with his wife, Louise Fleischmann, impressed Alfred enough that he selected our state’s capitol as the location to pursue his lifelong dream—to create an amazing garden. So the couple purchased a winter home and did just that, building one of the most beautiful ornamental gardens in the state. As a matter of fact, the United States Postal Service created a stamp series to recognize 10 of America’s best gardens and Maclay Gardens was included in that series. “The gardens feature a picturesque brick walkway, secret garden, reflection pool, walled garden and hundreds of camellias and azaleas,” says Alex Cronin with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s press office. “In 1953, nine years after Mr. Maclay’s death, Mrs. Maclay and her children donated the gardens to the state of Florida. She expressed her wishes that the gardens always be maintained as a memorial to her husband and his creation and opened to the public for the enjoyment of the people of Florida and guests.” Peak blooming season is January 1 through April 30, and the floral peak usually comes in 18

mid- to late-March. Visitors during these months can expect to pay a small entrance fee to view the gardens and the historic Maclay house, but the nominal fee is worth it. The park features hundreds of camellias and azaleas, plus an abundance of other greenery and blooms. The on-site Lake Hall provides opportunities for kayaking, fishing, canoeing and swimming. Boats without motors are welcome to explore the waterway, and lakeside grills and pavilions offer a place to relax and enjoy a family picnic. The park offers two short nature trails (we’re talking less than an hour for a novice walker to complete) for walking, and bicyclists, hikers and equestrians have six miles of shared trails and five miles of designated biking trails. Park manager Stephanie McDonald in
her manager’s message says, “Currently my favorite spot in the park is our newly updated visitor center. Come and check it out. We have mystery boxes, a large terrarium with Creature Features that change weekly and a movie room where you can learn more about the Maclay family, the house and the gardens.” For the wildlife lovers, Maclay Gardens is home to a great selection of animals and birds, including bobcats, white tail deer, alligators and more. Bald eagle nesting season runs from the beginning of October each year through May, so bring a set of binoculars. Alfred B. Giving back over 3 million gallons of water to the aquifer per day The Ocala Wetland Recharge Park incorporates treated wastewater and stormwater from the Old City Yard, a drainage retention area (DRA), that is located near the park and has historically flooded during heavy rain events. The park captures this water, therefore reducing regional flooding. Stormwater can contain many contaminants like nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers, pet and yard waste, oil, grease, heavy metals, vehicle coolants, bacteria and litter. These stormwater contaminants are the leading cause of water pollution. By sen sending this water to the Ocala Wetland Recharge Park, the total nitrogen can be reduced to nearly undetectable levels, and the total phosphorus will be greatly reduced. This freshly cleaned water will improve water quality and boost regional groundwater supplies.

With almost 200 miles of ATV and motorcycle trails, the Ocala National Forest is one of our state’s top off-roading destinations. “The Ocala National Forest offers a variety of riding opportunities for Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts. Trails are designed for slow speeds for riders to view and appreciate scenery and wildlife as well as to highlight the importance of conservation, forest management and history,” according to the USDA Forest Service’s website on the Ocala National Forest. If you’re new to ATVing and want an introduction to the Ocala National Forest or you don’t have ATVs of your own, a guided tour might be just the ticket. World Adventures ATV Tours offers a fun, relaxing and educational tour for all levels. “All of our ATVs are new with the best technology and safety measures,” says Paul Moyo with World Adventures ATV Tours. “The tours are guided by trained personnel to provide trail guidance, fauna and flora education, and basic ATV driving courses. Our clients are guided through the forest at all times, and prior ATV experience is not required.” You’ll check in with your tour at Black Horse Resort Ranch and will depart from the Big Scrub Campground. The tour lasts approximately two and a half hours, and morning and afternoon tours are available. “The forest is a magical place that really disconnects people from stress and provides a unique experience,” says Paul. “The terrain varies, and the forest is full of beautiful wildlife, such as deer, turtles, birds, bears and snakes.” ATVing can be a family-friendly activity, but kids with the supervision of an adult are allowed 20

to ride only selected vehicles on the tour. To drive an ATV within the Ocala National Forest you must be at least 16 with a driver’s license. “The tour requires reservations, which can be done online or via phone,” says Paul. “Because it’s a forest, we always recommend comfortable clothing, bug repellent and sunscreen.” If you have your own ATVs and are looking to make a weekend of it, there are campgrounds conveniently located within the forest, including Big Scrub and Lake Delancy West. They offer tons of space for loading and unloading your ATVs, plus corrals for when they’re not in use. In order to ride on the OHV-designated trails you’ll need to purchase either a three- or seven-day trail pass meant specifically for ATVs and other off-road vehicle use. The threeday pass is $10 per person and is good on the Apalachicola and Ocala National Forest trails.
Passes can be purchased at recreation.gov. On the homepage, search for “Florida OHV,” pick the pass you want and when you want it, and print it at home. All riders 16 and under must take and pass an online course in OHV safety before using the trails in the National Forests in Florida. These courses are administered by several stateapproved agencies and can be taken in person or online. All riders 16 and under must carry with them a certification card of the ATV safety course they have completed. eocaching became popular in the United States in 2000 after the government descrambled GPS signals, making them far more accurate. “A man named Dave Ulmer in Oregon wanted to test that accuracy,” says Chris Ronan, senior public relations manager with Geocaching HQ. “He hid a container, marked the coordinates and put the information online, challenging anyone to find it. Three days later, someone did! That’s the start of geocaching,” Today there are just over 1 million active geocaches hidden in America, and 40,000 of those are in Florida. In 2019 Florida logged more than half a million “found it” posts. An Internet search will provide the coordinates to current geocaches (2,044 to be exact!) hidden right here in and around Ocala. The Ocala National Forest and parks are also very popular hiding places. “Geocaches are everywhere, from city parks and other urban locations to hiking trails, mountains and more remote destinations,” says Chris. “One of the best things about the game is each player can choose their own adventure in whatever terrain is ideal for them.” To begin the quest, download the free
Geocaching app. The app includes an interactive map showing nearby geocaches, plus hints, tips and instructions for finding them. Geocaches may contain a variety of little trinkets and collectibles, think small figures, toy cars and balls. When you find a geocache, you can take the treasure inside and then leave one of your own for the next person to find. “Geocachers trade for items valued more than the item they’re taking, making sure the geocache will often contain some interesting items when someone finds it,” says Chris. “This is especially true for kids, who will choose toys to bring along geocaching, in the hopes they’re able to trade for other small toys in the geocache.”
And with the weather just about perfect for being outdoors, now is the ideal time to try out this high-tech treasure hunt. Chris agrees. “Geocaching is a rare combination of real world, just-outside-your-front-door tangible adventure and a digital app,” he says. “You’re outside and also engaging with people connecting through the Geocaching app around the world. Geocaching offers a way to take what you enjoy, hiking, exploring, camping, photography and add a new level of interest, which directs people to uncover hidden stories and locations. Although both invertebrate and vertebrate fossils have been found on the Peace River, many come to hunt for shark teeth. If you’re new to fossil hunting, Becky Bragg, owner of Canoe Outpost-Peace River, has the expertise to guide you on your adventure. According to Becky, the fossils left behind in the Peace River include those of giant sharks, stingrays, fish, whales, dugongs (ancestor of the manatee), dolphins, alligators, turtles, mastodons, mammoths, bison, camels, ancient horses, dire wolves, giant armadillos the size of small cars, giant land 24

tortoises, 20-foot sloths and saber-tooth cats. The most popular fossils, though, are the shark teeth, with megalodon and great white being the most prized. Most fossils in this area are from the middle Miocene Epoch, 16 million years ago, to the earliest Pliocene Epoch, about 4.5 million years ago. The area includes a mix of marine and land animals due to the rise and fall of the sea levels from glacial melting. “Most people come looking for the big shark teeth, and that takes some work,” says Becky. “But lots of smaller teeth and dugong ribs are found on a regular basis. You have to work at it, though. Get in the water and sift. The fossils are not just sitting on the sides.” In fact, fossil hunting is not allowed on the banks, only in the water. The best time to hunt is when water levels are low, about 12 inches below normal, so it’s always a good idea to call ahead or watch the Canoe Outpost-Peace River’s Facebook page for updates. Late winter and early spring are usual low times, and sunny days are preferred for snorkeling or diving because you can better see the bottom. If sifting for fossils, a sunny day isn’t necessary. The company offers canoe rentals for self-guided tours of the river and tours for specialty groups. “For those not in groups, anyone can go and try it,” Becky says. “Going by canoe, kayak or SUP gets you away from the boat ramps, which are hunted all the time. The favorite stretches are Gardner south to Arcadia with the Brownville and Oak Hill Runs because they are shorter and you have more time to look. You can also leave from our dock and paddle upstream and then back when you’re done.” According to Becky, the best hunting spots are gravelly areas at the river’s edge and on the bottom. Remember not to dig into the bank, as that area is private property. Gravelly

areas can be found by occasionally probing the bottom of the river with your paddle or a shovel and listening for or feeling the crunch of gravel under the sandy layer. Darker colored areas, not tan sand, are usually gravel spots. Bends in the river where there is a high bank, rocky areas or under overhanging trees—but be careful, alligators typically like those spots, too—are great places to start your hunt. Finding fossils requires you to get in the water and get your feet wet, so make sure you dress

You’ll need a sifter or screen, which can be purchased or rented from the Outpost when you rent your kayak, or you can bring a pasta strainer from home or even make your own sifter. Scoop up some gravel with either your hand or a shovel and dump it into the sifter. Shake the sifter in the water to wash the mud and sand away and start hunting through what’s left in the sifter. Some hunters prefer snorkeling or diving for fossils and fanning away the sand on the bottom to look for treasures closer to the limestone. Don’t forget to also bring a bucket and plastic baggies for treasures. Worried you won’t know what you’ve found? Becky can help with that. “Look for black, hard shapes, with and without enamel,” she says. “Look for textures, ribbing and angular shapes. Black and shiny ‘rocks’ can be anything, so look closely. We have handouts for our customers, and we help ID finds. We have posted info and some fossil displays. When we do a guided trip, staff leads the group into the water and shovels with them.” If you’re just hunting shark teeth or other invertebrate fossils, like mollusks, sea urchins or crabs, no permit is needed. However, if you’re hunting for vertebrate fossils, you will need a permit from the University of Florida’s Florida Museum of Natural History, and there are many rules and regulations for how and where you can hunt for these fossils. Also remember that it is illegal to excavate, disturb or collect manmade artifacts, such as arrowheads. 26

DIGGING FOR GEMS Gem mining might seem like an activity really only fit for kids, but for treasure hunters, the thrill of not knowing what you might uncover is enough to
keep you busy for hours. Luckily, we have a venue for gem mining right in our own city. Canyons Zip Line & Adventure Park is just north of Ocala on NW Gainesville Road. Beyond their namesake zip lining tours, the park offers horseback riding, kayaking and, yes, gem mining. If you’ve never been gem mining, just know you can expect to find real gems, crystals and fossils. The process is simple and doesn’t require much effort on the hunter’s part. (No actual mining is required!) At Canyon’s Zip Line & Adventure Park, you purchase the bag of dirt of your liking and take it to the sluice with running water. The dirt is emptied into the sifting pans a little at a time, and then you can take your time searching through the dirt for your treasures. Canyons Zip Line & Adventure Park has several size options when it comes to picking your bag of dirt—the larger the bag, the more payout! The Paydirt option ($6 or two for $10) comes with 6 ounces of gems. The Fossil Find ($8) comes with 4 ounces of fossils and a half ounce of shark teeth. The Emerald Strike ($12) comes with 6 plus ounces of gemstones and 3
plus ounces of emeralds. And if you want to go all out, the Motherload ($26) comes with 10 plus ounces of gemstones, 4 ounces of fossils, a half ounce of shark teeth, two arrowheads and one large specimen of amethyst druzy. “Everything is authentic except for the arrowheads,” says Kayla Ostrom, office manager at Canyons Zip Line & Adventure Park. “You are guaranteed to find treasures in every bag. Our bags also come with an educational gemstone ID card so you know what you are looking at when you find something you really love.” Gem mining might just be the perfect way to introduce your kiddos to treasure hunting—especially since they’re guaranteed to find the jackpot. “Kids absolutely love doing this,” says Kayla. “I believe our youngest gem miner was just under 2 years old. No experience is needed.” If you’re looking for something a little more challenging, you might want to check out Fort Drum Crystal Mine. When you first drive up to the open field, it doesn’t look like much of an attraction. Piles of dirt are spread out here and there. But once you’re able to start digging, the crystals promise to be spectacular. According to the Visit Florida website, Fort Drum Crystal Mine is the site of a former mining operation for the fossilized shell rock used in our roadbeds. But it wasn’t long before the owners of the mine discovered large fossilized clam shells filled with yellow calcite crystals. In fact, they say this is the only known place in the world to find such fossils, which geologists estimate to be over 1.5 million years old. Finding the fossils is wet and dirty work that takes patience and determination. Expect to be at the mine for a full day, sorting through the dirt and washing off rock. The owner, Eddie, is not always on-site, so make sure you call ahead and make plans to visit with him before you come. For adults, the cost to dig is $60 per person. U N COV E R T H E G O O DS Metal detecting is much more than scanning the beach for lost items. Who really knows what you could find just below the ground! Plus, metal detecting can be great exercise, and you might even make new friends if you join one of the metal detecting clubs around town. Although many of the group meetings
and hunts are on hold right now due to the pandemic, the Ocala Metal Detecting Club (ocalametaldetectingclub.com) is a good source of information. Metal detectors range in price from fairly inexpensive models to super-sensitive models that can cost more than $1,000. Make sure you do your research before buying one, and again, a club might be a good place for advice before you purchase. If hunting on the beach, you’ll want to get there early in the morning before others arrive to have first pick. Look for areas where there are a lot of shell deposits or at the high tide line. If possible, hunt after a storm, when the sea might have turned up some interesting treasure. It’s important to know where you’re allowed to use a metal detector. And if you’re not sure
detectors are strictly prohibited in the Ocala National Forest, as well as other national forests. In Marion County, the use of metal detectors in county-owned or -managed park facilities may only be performed as permitted by the Parks & Recreation director. You must obtain a metal detecting park pass for $10 plus tax and fees before beginning by submitting an application through the Parks & Recreation main office. Your pass must be clearly visible on your body while metal detecting, and you can only use a metal detector during normal operating hours. If you happen to find items of archaeological or cultural significance, they may not be kept and must be reported to the park ranger immediately. Your activity must not disturb others, and holes that are made to extract items found must be backfilled and compacted. These rules only apply
CANYONS ZIP LINE & ADVENTURE PARK whether you’re allowed, always ask first before you start, as rules and regulations vary from location to location. It’s never OK to hunt on private property without permission, and each county and city might have rules regarding hunting in parks, so do your research before you get started. According to the Florida State Parks website, metal detectors can be used in certain designated areas. In coastal parks, they can be used between the waterline and toe of the dune, as determined by the park manager, except at archaeological sites within that zone. They can also be used during authorized archaeological research projects and to recover lost personal items, with the supervision of a park staff member. It’s always best to check with the park management about their rules regarding metal detecting before beginning. And note that metal
within the unincorporated areas of Marion County and do not include property within municipalities such as Belleview, Ocala or Dunnellon. The City of Ocala has similar rules about digging on cityowned property, such as parks, and a permit is required. Contact the City of Ocala before digging. A New Twist On An Old Classic The history of the Bloody Mary and how to make it your own.
I
n the 1920s, Fernand Petiot was an American bartender working at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. In an effort to keep his bar new and exciting, he concocted an unusual drink made with vodka and tomato juice. The drink was dubbed the Bloody Mary. When Petiot moved back to the states in the 1930s and went to work at the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City, he brought his popular recipe with him. The hotel managers tried to tone down the name by calling it the Red Snapper, but the change didn’t last. New Yorkers were not originally impressed with the drink, calling it boring and bland. Petiot spiced the drink up, literally, by adding black pepper, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, lemon and even Tabasco sauce for those who dared. The drink took off, and a classic was created. 28

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Although there are varying stories of how the Bloody Mary came to be known as such, the most widely accepted tale includes the story of Mary Tudor, also known as Mary I of England. The daughter of Henry VIII, she was born to the king and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, in 1516. She was the fifth of six children and was the only one to survive past infancy. Although she was born an heir to the throne, she was declared illegitimate when Henry divorced her mother in 1532 in order to marry Anne Boleyn, the mother of Elizabeth I. Mary and her mother were publicly mocked and treated poorly by
Henry and others. Despite all of this, Mary still had a path to the throne when her younger half-brother, Edward VI, died from tuberculosis at age 15. Her five-year reign was violent and revolved around turning the country back to Catholicism. Mary is most known for murdering hundreds of Protestants—burning them at the stake—in the name of her beloved Catholicism. The nickname Bloody Mary was given to her before her death in 1558.

Then there’s the Bloody Mary mix. A trip to the grocery or liquor store will reveal plenty of brands and varieties, so be creative. Have a few on hand to try. Citrus & Spice Citrus slices add a touch of tartness and zest to any drink. Cut up lemons and limes to squeeze into the final product. Made mostly of tomato juice, which is relatively acidic, many people like
their Bloody Mary with a splash of hot sauce. From mild and smoky to barbecue and steak flavored; the options are varied. The Finishing Touch The Bloody Mary is typically finished off with a celery stick or green olives, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be creative with your garnishes. Such as the perogy and bacon listed in the recipe to the right, a more substantial garnish just might be the way to go. Want olives? Why not stuff them with jalapeno, garlic or blue cheese cheeses? Try chunks of spicy pepperoni or mini dill pickles, too. Be creative and you just may find your new favorite flavor combination.

1 teaspoon red pepper sauce 1 bottle (64 ounces) tomato juice 2 cups vodka 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons lime juice 6 cheese-filled perogies, baked according to package directions • 6 slices bacon, cooked until crispy • ice • wooden skewers In large pitcher, combine red pepper sauce, tomato juice, vodka, Worcestershire sauce and lime juice; stir well. In glasses, pour over ice. Using wooden skewer, garnish each Bloody Mary with a cheese-filled perogy and crispy bacon slice.
