T

he Boys and Girls Clubs of Ocala has impacted the community for decades and strives to keep up its efforts. On Saturday, April 30, the Ocala community came out to show its support for the organization. Ocala Car Audio and War Horse HarleyDavidson hosted the 2nd Annual Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Festival Fundraiser, benefiting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Marion County. The warm, sunny day was a perfect afternoon for such an event. The festival included something for everyone. There was food, music, an array of cars, motorcycles and plenty of options for the family, too. The Doc Finley Experience provided live music. Food and drinks of all sorts were up for grabs. Claw Mama’s Seafood had several offerings, and Chickfil-A brought out the classic chicken sandwiches and chicken biscuits. Many other food and drink choices were available as well. The Car, Truck and Motorcycle Festival included a multitude of impressive creations. From classic American muscle cars to modern sports cars, all sorts of outstanding machines were on display. The event also had plenty of family fun. The folks from Firehouse Urban Axe Throwing were on hand, allowing guests to test their skills. A fundraiser auction capped off the beautiful afternoon with proceeds benefitting our local Boys and Girls Clubs. Guests had the chance to bid on unique prize boxes and more. Prizes included beer and other items from Infinite Ale Works, racing memorabilia and even the chance for a child to work with the Chief of Police for a day. The Ocala Police Chief, Chief Balken, was on hand to help with the auction and show his support to an important organization in the community. The fundraiser raised over $33,000, benefiting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Marion County. It was just another example of our great community showing its support for a great cause—and on a great day.

onstruction of the highly anticipated Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training (FAST) facility began in October 2020 as a venture of the Circle Square Foundation and recently opened this past spring. A needed addition to our community, FAST is open to the public for swimmers of all ages and abilities. “With the closing of the Newton A. Perry Aquatic Center [at the College of Central Florida], there became a need in Ocala/Marion County for a community pool,” says Kinley Rogers, a marketing executive with Colen Built Development, LLC. “Swimming is fundamental for the development of young children. FAST

is large enough to train professionals and small enough to engage our local community. And while FAST will be an economic driver as a tourism destination for Marion County, the Circle Square Foundation is excited to engage the local community. The Foundation is thrilled to launch Cannonball Kidz in Fall 2022—a program that will offer free swim lessons to every third grade student in Marion County.” FAST houses an indoor 10-lane Olympic competition pool, two springboard diving boards, two state-of-the-art scoreboards, deck space for 800 swimmers and a total of 2,000 spectator seats. The outdoor pool is the 2021 Olympic Trials warm-up pool from Myrtha

Pools that was utilized at the U.S. Olympic Trails in Omaha, Nebraska, before it was disassembled and shipped to FAST. The sevenlane competition pool provides swimmers the opportunity to compete and swim outdoors. The outdoor deck also houses the interactive spray ground with decorative play structures for younger swimmers, covered cabanas and bleacher seating for 700 spectators. FAST also offers an indoor 2,475-square-foot Strength & Conditioning Center, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a pro shop, meeting spaces and the FAST Fuel Café. “From those learning to swim to professionals, FAST is here to help you achieve your best,” says Kinley. “FAST offers a variety of community programs, including swim lessons, aquatic fitness, competitive swim, open swim, Fire and EMT certification courses, and lifeguard training. All facilities and pools at FAST are open to the public to use.” The FAST Falcons are the official competitive swim team at the facility. The competitive swim season begins in August and carries throughout the year until the following July. Families are encouraged to sign up at any time, and the experienced coaching staff will assist in placing your swimmer in the appropriate training group. The training groups range from 5-18 for agegroup swimmers. For adults, the FAST Falcons Masters team is for adults 18 and over. If you or your little one wants to learn to swim this summer, the FAST Falcons Swim School will be providing lessons all summer long. Open swim and spray ground access for families is also available this summer for a daily fee or included in a FAST membership, and lap swim is open for those who wish to swim for exercise. “The Circle Square Foundation is excited to see the growth of all the swimmers that come through FAST,” says Kinley. “The third grade student who received free swim lessons through Cannonball Kidz and goes on to swim at the competitive and collegiate level. The high school graduate who completes her Fire and EMT Certifications at FAST and is able to serve her community. The toddler who learns to swim and puts his parents’ minds at ease. The middle-aged adult who trains with the FAST Masters and fulfills his top bucket list item of competing a triathlon. Regardless of your aquatic experience, FAST will empower you to go beyond your best.” Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training // 4635 SW 67th Ave. Rd., Ocala // (352) 820-4222 // Visit FloridaFAST.com for upcoming competition dates, the pool schedule, rates and swim lesson registration information.

Lil’ Leaf = Big Fun Just because it’s summer and school is out doesn’t mean your little one can’t keep learning. The Lil’ Leaf Series at Sholom Park hosts guest speakers to bring the great outdoors to life for kids ages 4 to 10. // B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y

he Lil’ Leaf Summer Series at Sholom Park was designed to provide an interactive, educational and, most of all, fun, outdoor experience for young kids over the summer. From gardening and reading to up-close critter connections, the park offers a variety of interactions this summer. “Coach Cammy will make fitness fun on June 2 and teach the importance of staying active this summer and having healthy eating habits,” says Event Coordinator Christine Shearer. “The Early Learning Coalition is a great Sholom Park partner that will be providing a sensory exploration activity and, as always, free books to take home and read this summer. On July 7, Amanda Marek with IFAS will teach on gardening and eating your vegetables. Ocala Rocks Official will be there to help kids decorate their own planting pot. The kids will then fill the planter with potting soil and select a seed to plant and take home to nurture and watch it grow. Our last Lil’ Leaf of the summer will be Aug 4 with Maxine Hunter from IFAS. She will be teaching on wildlife at the park. We will have snakes, turtles, lizards, insects and more. This event will also include a wildlife adventure walk through the park”. Each of these unique gatherings includes a story time in the shade with the specialist, plus tasty snacks. Kona Ice will also be on hand to provide a cool treat at the end of the events. Community partners, such as Freedom Public Library and the Early Learning Coalition, 20

A frequent visitor to the Lil’ Leaf series are the professionals from the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences extension office. “They have been wonderful educational partners for many years for several park events,” says Christine. “They share their love and knowledge of plants, trees, gardening and wildlife, and they always provide a fun showand-tell experience. Amanda Marek and Maxine Hunter are the best.” Plan to stay for a bit after the program to explore all that Sholom Park has to offer for families. “We always encourage families to explore nature at the park,” says Christine. “Outdoor

scavenger hunts can be so much fun. Bird watching with older children can be fun, too. You never know what type of birds you will see at Sholom Park. A bald eagle was spotted and photographed just last month. IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR AN ESCAPE FROM EVERYDAY LIFE THAT BRINGS YOU BACK TO FLORIDA’S ROOTS—COMPLETE WITH FANTASTIC FISHING OR HISTORIC GOLF COURSES—THE OLD FLORIDA LODGE ON FLORIDA’S NATURE COAST AND MISSION INN RESORT & CLUB IN HOWEY-INTHE-HILLS ARE BOTH WORTHY OF A WEEKEND AWAY. FISHING FLORIDA

Although some parts of Florida have succumbed to the tourists with large hotels, busy theme parks and massive shopping centers, other areas, including Crystal River and Yankeetown in nearby Citrus County, have stayed true to Florida’s roots. In other words, they’re perfect for nature watching, fishing and relaxing. Local brothers-in-law Forrest Opitz and Bryan Caracciolo are all too familiar with Florida’s Nature Coast. Both are avid outdoorsmen, spending plenty of free time exploring the area and fishing in the Gulf. The JUN ‘22

of fish are being targeted (red snapper and grouper are common), the journey can take you anywhere from 15 to 100 miles offshore. “All you need is a change of clothes and some sunglasses,” says Forrest. “We have it from there.” And they mean they have everything… gear, bait, tackle, rods, reels, it’s all included. The HydraSport 33 Vector can accommodate up to six guests, excluding the first mate and guide. The boat has a bathroom and is more than comfortable enough to spend the day fishing and lounging. And when hunger strikes, there’s no worries—water, drinks, snacks and lunch are included. “Often we do sandwiches, but nothing is premade,” says Forrest of the offshore fishing lunch. “A favorite, though, is the red snapper ceviche with mango, tomatoes, lemon, lime and cilantro. As soon as the snapper is in the boat, we start fileting and preparing it. It’s delicious.” 24

duo decided to put their passion to work for them and opened the Old Florida Lodge a year or so ago. The idea? To show others what makes the Nature Coast so special. As an all-inclusive fishing guide service and overnight adventure lodge, the Old Florida Lodge offers an experience that is unique to the area. “There are other guide services in the area,” says Forrest, “but before the Lodge, there was no all-inclusive opportunity. Yankeetown wasn’t necessarily considered a fishing destination, but we intend to change that.” Forrest and Bryan, along with their team of experienced fishing guides, lead guests on both inshore and offshore fishing excursions, taking off from their dock on the Withlacoochee River, one of the only deep-water rivers in the area, before making their way out to the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The offshore excursion is a summer event and is an all-day affair at 13 hours on the water, including two hours out and two hours back to shore. Depending on the trip and what type

After a long, hot day on the water, Forrest laughs that it’s hard not to lounge and fall asleep on the way back to shore. “On the boat we have a large, oversized T-top for shade cover as well as the marine bean bags at the back of the boat,” says Forrest. “They are very comfy and a customer favorite. Off-shore boats are meant to ride well in any type of sea. They are built for comfort and for fishing, being wide and stable, even with waves. We can brave any sea with that boat.” If an entire day on the water is something you want to work your way up to, the team also offers inshore fishing excursions, which are available year-round. “Redfish and snook are the targets inshore,” says Forrest. “We can do a half day for five hours or a full day for eight hours. We spend a lot of time in the mangroves and where the water is shallow. Inshore we can always see the shore, we may be a mile or so out, and we run the coastline.” Of course, your creature comforts and all the necessities are included on the inshore trips, as well. “We have a handful of boats on hand, and

we try to tailor the trips to whatever our clients need,” adds Forrest. “The boat used depends on the number of people, the time of year and the fish being targeted. One of the highlights of our excursions is that we are not a one-trick pony. Some people may want to fish live bait, some fly fish, some like the winter when the tide is really low. We can accommodate your needs and make the trip perfect for you and your group.” And speaking of groups, the fishing trips are ideal for bachelor parties, guys’ or gals’ getaways, and family adventures. “We have everything from seasoned fisherman to first-time casters,” says Forrest. “Our guides are there to help, whether you’re just looking for the best locales and tips or you want them to bait your hook every time. Our operations manager, Joel Wiessner, is our head guy. He runs the majority of our trips, and everyone loves him. He’s super personable and an outstanding fisherman and host.” Of course, no trip to the Gulf Coast would be complete without scalloping, and the Old Florida Lodge offers an excursion for just that in the summer. “Scalloping is very popular on our coast in the late summer,” says Forrest. “And it’s a great, family-friendly activity. No experience and no skills are needed to get out there and have a good time. We anchor up and show you how to scallop.” Many visitors to the lodge stay multiple days and choose a variety of excursions—offshore

one day and scalloping the next maybe. The lodge accommodations are very comfortable, and the remodeled home turned lodge sleeps 10. There’s a full kitchen, and your meals will be provided for you. You’re assured your guides are great cooks and have a handful of tried-andtrue recipes to share. The lodge features two bathrooms, a rec room complete with a pool table, darts, television and a keg on tap, plus four bedrooms with comfy beds. A favorite, though, is the outdoor living space. “We have a full outdoor kitchen,” says Forrest. “A grill, pizza oven, fryer and more. Our oversized firepit is surrounded by rocking chairs and tiki torches to keep away mosquitos. It’s super quiet and right near the river. It’s common for the deer to come morning and evening, along with turkeys, hogs, racoons and other wildlife. “This is a very different experience than going to Miami, Tampa or the Keys to fish,” Forrest continues. “A lot of times, when we leave to go fishing, particularly on weekdays, we may never even see another boat. We’re not plagued by the water quality issues that some other locations experience, and there aren’t a lot of houses on the water. It’s laid back, old Florida at its best.” Old Florida Lodge // (352) 325-5675 // oldfloridalodge.com

GOLFING WITH THE GUYS

There’s a hidden gem in nearby Howey-in-theHills, a place where relaxation is the norm and golf is a way of life. And it’s the perfect location for your upcoming guy getaway. The Mission Inn Resort & Club offers world-class golf on two professional courses, El Campeon and Las Colinas. “One of our courses, El Campeon, was built in 1917 and is more than 100 years old,” says 26

352PREVIEW.COM

John French, creative director in the marketing department for more than a decade. “Six of the holes out of 18 have elevation changes of more than 85 feet. That’s very rare for a Florida course.” The second course, Las Colinas, was designed with wide-open fairways and soft, rolling hills. The course’s signature hole is No. 12, Alligator Alley, and it’s sure to challenge even the most seasoned golfer. Both courses are consistently ranked among the top courses on Golf Advisor, including El Campeon being named the No. 1 course in Florida since 2012. The courses have a long list of highcaliber competitions under their belts, including 20 years of NCAA championships, eight years of Florida State High School Championships, and U.S. Open and US Amateur qualifying rounds. El Campeon has also been selected by the PGA Tour as the U.S. qualifying venue for the PGA Latinoamerican and Canadian/Mackenzie Tours. If your group happens to be in their 50s or up, you can enjoy a senior rate for golf. Although Mission Inn may be known for its golf, there is no shortage of other recreational opportunities at the resort, including trap and skeet shooting in the month of June. The on-site trap and skeet range offers guests an opportunity to participate in clay sports with a knowledgeable instructor. “It’s a popular activity,” says John. “Guns, targets and shells are provided to guests by the resort, as well as protective and safety gear.” In trap shooting, a single machine throws the target as the competitor makes his or her way through five shooting stations. In skeet shooting, two machines throw targets as the competitor moves in a half circle pattern on the

range. John encourages anyone, from the experienced shooter to the newbie wanting to give the sport a go, to give it a try. Because an instructor is not available 24/7, John encourages guests to make arrangements with the resort to ensure an experienced instructor is available for your group’s needs. Another popular activity is spending a day relaxing on the water. Nearby Lake Harris is known for its bass fishing, and the resort offers boat rentals for half- and full-day use, including a pontoon boat for up to eight people and a fishing boat that seats three. It’s everything you need to make your guys’ getaway a success.

No matter what activity you choose, you’re guaranteed to work up an appetite. And John guarantees that there is no shortage of delicious food at the resort. “The dining is amazing,” he says. “We have four restaurants and three bars, including the pool bar. One of our newest offerings is a handful of Spanish-inspired dishes. We have everything from hometown cooking to casual and fine dining, from wild game and duck to filet mignon. You can even arrange a chef’s table special menu of your choice for an evening.” John says all it takes is a little arranging, and the pros at Mission Inn are there to help make your stay a memorable success. “Some groups like to come and give it all a try when they visit the resort,” adds John. “Golf one of the courses in the morning and try shooting in the afternoon. Day two you can enjoy a day on the lake or golf the second course. It’s a different type of a weekend than you’ll find at the theme parks or in the bigger cities. There are more than enough activities to keep busy, but at the same time, it’s real Florida and it’s close by.” There’s something to be said for being close to home. In late April Infinite Ale Works hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its new location. After a few years of negotiating with the City of Ocala, Infinite purchased the old fire station near Tuscawilla Park with plans to turn the station into a restaurant and coffee shop as well as the distillery and brewery. The groundbreaking signaled the start of the construction process and was celebrated with light refreshments and, of course, Infinite beer. Stay tuned to Infinite’s Facebook page for details as the construction phase unfolds. In the meantime, visit Infinite’s usual location at 304 S Magnolia Avenue for the beer you know and love.
