SCENES OF SUMMER
A NEW EXHIBIT AT THE APPLETON SHOWCASES FLORIDA’S ETERNAL SUMMER.
WRITTEN BY MELISSA PETERSON
Although you wouldn’t know it thanks to the fact that the Sunshine State has been feeling the heat for months now, summer doesn’t o cially begin until June 21. And the Appleton Museum of Art is welcoming the season with a brand-new exhibit consisting entirely of works from its permanent collection.
The exhibit, Eternal Summer, is a combination of pieces that have been in the Appleton collection for a long time along with new pieces acquired over the past several years, some as recent as this year, curated entirely from the Modern & Contemporary Collection.
“There are many works included that have never been exhibited at the Appleton before,” says Victoria Billig, assistant director with the Appleton, “and we are excited to share them with visitors. We were really interested in celebrating summer because it’s such an important part of Florida’s identity. There are also so many incredible Florida
artists and Florida-themed pieces in the collection that we wanted to highlight and use to tell a visual story about what it means to experience the summer months in Florida.”
The works that were selected for this show focus on warm-weather leisure and outdoor activities, the striking ora and fauna that Florida boasts, and that feeling of freedom that comes with travel and vacation.
“One of our favorite [pieces] is a large watercolor by Janet Fish, who is a noted American realist,” says Victoria. “We’re also very excited to present the work of two Gainesville-based artists who are brand-new to the collection: Martha Strawn and Margaret Tolbert. Both focus on Florida’s natural environment, through photography and painting, respectively. We’re also pleased to bring out a selection of photographs of our local springs by Bruce Mozert.”
On June 9 the museum will host a Summer
Shindig for all Appleton members, featuring live music by Left on Broadway with elevated picnic fare and seasonal beverages in the courtyard. Guests will be the rst to see Eternal Summer The event is open to Appleton members only, so it’s a great time to join, especially at the Family/ Dual level, which o ers bene ts for two adults and any children in the household under 18.
“In addition to the year-round free admission to see the galleries, members can visit the Artspace and take advantage of the art activities, completely free of charge,” says Veronica. “Appleton members also receive discounts on art classes, and those at the Family/Dual level also receive discounts on Summer Art Camp.”
Now through June 30, the Appleton is o ering 20 percent o Family/Dual memberships, which means for only $48 the whole family can enjoy all the above. There are also individual memberships all the way up to the Director’s Circle memberships. Members at all levels enjoy unlimited free admission for one year, discounts in the Appleton Store and on art classes, invites to members-only events and dining deals at locally owned businesses.
As another perk, members are also automatically enrolled in reciprocal membership programs, providing free admission to other museums across the United States.
“The Appleton is proud to o er members enrollment in two reciprocal membership programs that expand their bene ts to a wide o ering of other museums, zoos, historical centers and cultural institutions,” says Veronica. “Members at every level are automatically enrolled in the Southeastern Reciprocal Membership Program [for] free admission to more than 200 cultural and historical institutions in the Southeast. Members of the Appleton Director’s Circle are also enrolled in the North American Reciprocal Museum Association, [which] provides free admission to 1,244 art museums and galleries, historical museums and societies, botanical gardens, children’s museums, zoos and more.”
For non-members, the Appleton’s Free First Saturdays is the perfect opportunity to see Eternal Summer. On the rst Saturday of every month, visitors can come to the Appleton for free to see the exhibits, make art in the Artspace and enjoy special programing. Food trucks are on-site at each event. Saturday hours are 10am5pm, and this summer’s Free First Saturdays will be held on June 3, July 1, August 5 and September 2. Eternal Summer is on display June 10 through September 24.

BACKYARD BASH
TROPICAL ROCK UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
As far as Robert and Marlo Dubé are concerned, music makes the world go round. To share their passion, the couple launched Hawk's Nest House Concerts in southwest Marion County.
Since the backyard concert venue located near West Port High school opened in 2019, over three dozen artists have performed there. It’s become a local celebration of Tropical Rock (“Trop Rock”), the popular genre with an island vibe that features elements of rock and roll, country, Caribbean and reggae.
“We don’t hunt, sh, golf or go to sporting events. This is what we do for fun,” says Robert. “We support the artists and are blessed enough to consider many our friends. We are not a business; we are just the hosts.”
UPCOMING CONCERTS:
JUNE 25
JOE DOWNING BAND
AUG 11
AUBREY WOLLETT & BRYTON STOLL
SEPT 15
JOHN ALLAN MILLER
Front and center in the big backyard is a large covered pavilion and stage for both the artists and guests. If the forecast includes rain, tents are set up so everyone can stay dry.
OCT 14
DROP DEAD DANGEROUS
Bring your own chair to kick back and enjoy the music. Most concerts last about three hours with a break mid-way.
The venue doesn’t sell food or drinks, but shows typically start with an “eat and greet”
an hour prior. Bring your own beverage and a covered dish to share. Marlo’s signature Brunswick Stew has become a fan favorite.
These traveling musicians don’t have high-end tour buses. They pay their own expenses, so performing at venues like Hawk’s Nest is a way to broaden their exposure. In addition to CDs, most artists have additional merchandise to sell, such as T-shirts or hats..
A donation of $20 per person is collected
with all proceeds going to the artists.
“We keep nothing. In fact, we give away prizes,” says Robert. “Everyone who pays the donation gets entered into our drawings. Usually, it’s a signed CD by the artist, and at least one more fun prize.”
“Unless there is a hurricane, we don’t cancel,” he adds. “We have plenty of front yard parking, and for those who wish to bring a motorhome, camper or tent, we welcome you to stay the night in the backyard.”

HISTORIC & NOTEWORTHY
HOPS HOSTS ITS ANNUAL SPRING HOME AND GARDEN TOUR.
RONALD W. WETHERINGTON, SOCIAL EDITOR
3
52 Preview Magazine was proud to be one of the sponsors of the 2023 Historic Ocala Preservation Society (HOPS) Spring Home and Garden Tour. HOPS is a non-profit and volunteer organization dedicated to educating the community on the history of our lovely homes. The tour was held on May 14, and the weather was perfect for the tour of the homes and gardens.
In addition of the tours, several workshops were held. Tracy Wright, owner of Grated & Cured, hosted a workshop on the step-by-step building of charcuterie boards. Participants took home delicious and aesthetically pleasing boards. Another popular interactive workshop was for The Graceful Gardener. This workshop was a floral arrangement party where participants were able to make a small to medium arrangement from three flower stations of greenery, filler textures and focal flowers. During the class, it was discussed how to purchase and properly select blooms from grocery stores, proper cutting techniques and general maintenance and long-lasting tips and tricks. A third workshop was facilitated by Julie Shealy, a contemporary artist, who taught participants how to paint a beautiful still life surrounded by a Florida garden of azaleas and lush foliage. All supplies were included, and small original paintings were also for sale.
Ocala/Marion County is rich in history and filled with historic homes. One of the homes on the HOPS tour was owned by Linda Letcher and Peter Coles who bought their historic Tuscawilla home in 2022.

DAD’S DAY OUT
SHOW THE GUYS IN YOUR LIFE HOW MUCH YOU APPRECIATE THEM BY PLANNING THE PERFECT DAY TRIP TO TAMPA.
WRITTEN BY MELISSA PETERSON
If you’re wondering how to treat Dad this month, why not plan a day trip packed with adrenaline- lled adventure, a yummy lunch and then a night out at Tropicana Field to see the Rays. Tampa has plenty to o er groups looking for a family-friendly outing—here are some of our favorite ideas.
THRILLS & CHILLS
Summertime in Tampa can be warm and humid, which means you might be looking to get out on the water to cool o a bit. Although a relaxing sail around Tampa Bay is always an option, why not kick it up a notch this Father’s Day with the Bay Rocket boat thrill ride.
The Bay Rocket experience lets you blast off on Tampa’s newest 50-minute jet boat adventure. Thrill-seekers can experience the power of Bay Rocket’s 2,800 horsepower with 180-degree spins, turns and bow dips. Bay Rocket departs from downtown Tampa near the convention center and slowly heads outbound on the Seddon Channel toward Hillsborough Bay.
“A 102-passenger, aluminum vessel weighing 54 gross tons with a length of 70 feet and a width of 20 feet, Bay Rocket is able to maneuver and turn so well because of the hull design and because its jet propulsion,” says Bay Rocket Captain Lantz. “It’s essentially a giant jet ski.”
Although getting wet on the boat really
depends on sea conditions, Captain Lantz doesn’t make any promises about certain parts of the boat staying dry. Basically, if you don’t want to get wet, stay on dry land.
“We never tell anyone they will stay dry, and depending on the wind conditions, our typical ‘dryer area’ can end up being the wettest,” says Captain Lantz. “Each position on the boat is unique and equally good. If you sit in the back
when Bay Rocket does 180-degree spins or zigzags, you are traveling the full 180 degrees and feeling all the movement, versus the middle or front that settle or become pivot points.”
The typical cruise is about 50 minutes, and it takes about 15 minutes to get into the bay.
The crew provides narration pertaining to boat safety, Davis Islands, Harbor Island, Tampa and Ybor City during the outbound cruise. Once in the bay, expect ve 180-degree spins, ve sharp and hard zig-zags, two bow dips and one nal stop forward motion for about 15 minutes. On the return trip back to the dock, the crew will tell the passengers about Peter O. Knight Airport and the Port of Tampa, while the mate will take photos of the passengers enjoying fun, interactive games and a dance party on deck.

“I personally enjoy watching the reaction of our passengers when they get wet,” says Captain Lantz. “It’s typically one side that gets wet rst; therefore, the other side seems to taunt the wet side and people seem to liven up. Then once the other side gets wet, the banter and taunting and excitement increases. It’s the best feeling to witness the surprise and then the excitement of passengers. I’m always looking forward to making a memorable experience for all the guests that get on Bay Rocket.”

LUNCH AT THE WHARF
Once you’re back from your trip around the bay, you’re probably going to be ready for some lunch. Hopefully you brought a change of dry clothes! If not, try a quick, 15-minute walk along the river to dry o . You’ll be heading toward Sparkman Wharf—the perfect destination for tons of dining options the whole family will enjoy.
Tampa’s newest outdoor dining and entertainment spot, Sparkman Wharf is an upcoming spot for small eateries, o ce space, retail shopping, along with an intimate dining garden, biergarten and recreational lawn. Located right next to the Florida Aquarium and the American Victory Ship and Museum, it’s
the perfect stop for a day out in Tampa.
For outdoor dining and craft beer, we suggest LightHaus Beer Garden for a variety of wine, seltzers and beer and delicious New York City-style pizza. It’s the perfect place for a quick bite to eat right on the water. If you’re looking for something family friendly and fun, Splitsville Southern + Social has a menu inspired by two-time James Beard Award winner Chef Art Smith with classic Southern fare. Chef Art has brough his world-famous fried chicken, made from-scratch cheese biscuits, shrimp and grits, short rib sliders salads and signature at breads to the menu, as well as hand-crafted cocktails, specialty cocktails on tap and 45 varieties of ice-cold canned beer. The coolest thing about dining at Splitsville? There are single-lane, 10-pin bowling lanes right in the restaurant, as well as Skee-Ball, ping pong, billiards, foosball, darts and shu eboard. Bowling lanes are reservable, so make sure to check out splitsvillelanes.com when making dining plans.
Sparkman Wharf also o ers a full lineup of special events, including live music and trivia nights. Check out the full directory of businesses and restaurants and see the calendar of events at sparkmanwharf.com.

FLYING FOR FUN
RC PLANES TAKE TO THE SKIES WITH THE OCALA FLYING MODEL CLUB.
WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
The development of radio-controlled planes as a hobby began in 1937. Twin brothers Dr. Walter and Bill Good made those first flights using primitive RC equipment to fly an 8-foot Free Flight (FF) model at the airport in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
A year later, the Good brothers built their first RC plane, and since then, RC model aviation has exploded as a hobby with clubs formed around the world.
The Ocala Flying Model Club (OFMC) has about 270 members, including former military pilots, commercial pilots and hobby model aviation pilots of all ages.
The club operates out of a 200-acre site on the Florida Greenway near the Florida Horse Park. The main flying field features a 48-feetby-600-feet paved runway in addition to a large pavilion and other shelters.
Jesse Hinds, president of OFMC, has been flying RC model aircraft since 1968. He currently has “at least” a couple dozen planes.
“Most RC planes are patterned after real aircraft,” says Jesse. “Some of the most popular models are the P-51 and P-47 and various aircraft from the WWI and WWII eras.”
To join the club, you must be a member of
have no idea how to fly,” says Jesse, adding that OFMC volunteers will help club members without charge. “We have instructors who work with them until they can solo and fly without assistance. There’s usually an airplane you can use to train with.”
He explains that the instructor uses a “buddy box” system, which allows the student pilot to get valuable hands-on experience but enables the instructor to take control of the plane if the student needs help avoiding a crash.
Club meetings take place at 10am on the first Saturday of each month, but anyone interested in seeing the planes fly can stop by the OFMC field whenever the gate is open.
“Unless it’s an event, there’s no scheduled time to fly. Spectators are welcome, and there’s no cost to watch,” says Hinds. “People come out, set up their chairs in the shade and watch the action.”
The next event on the OFMC calendar is the 12 O’clock High Show on September 15-17, featuring War Birds and classics.

AGELESS ADVENTURES
BANISH SUMMER BOREDOM WITH THESE INTERGENERATIONAL CLASSES THROUGH MASTER THE POSSIBILITIES.
WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
Fly a drone? Build and launch a bottle rocket? Decorate cupcakes? Create your own stained-glass masterpiece? These classes and so many more will be o ered during the Ageless Adventures programs, July 10-14, through Master the Possibilities. Classes begin at about 9am each day, and the last class ends around 4 to 4:30pm.
Summer fun that appeals to multiple generations? It might sound impossible, but Master the Possibilities has done just that with Ageless Adventures, which feature hands-on activities that engage and entertain both young and not-so-young participants.
“Adults can enroll themselves and either their child, grandchild or another young person in their life,” explains Tim Thompson, facilities assistant for Master the Possibilities. “Classes are created so they interact with each other to accomplish goals, tasks and complete their projects.”
Ageless Adventures began in July 2019 and
has grown each year since.
“Master the Possibilities is primarily an education center, and we want to keep that education aspect to all our courses,” says Thompson. “We want to promote connection and make it a learning moment.
“Some grandparents like to get their grandkids for a week and use this as an adventure to have time with them,” he adds. “We encourage the adult to sit down with the kid(s) and decide which classes to take.”
Visit the website together and look over the classes to learn all that is available. Because popular classes can ll up quickly and sell out, your best bet is to enroll early.
“This year we introduced Bottle Rocket Blast O ! where they build their own 2-liter bottle rockets and blast them o ,” says Thompson.
Another intriguing option is the drone class where participants learn how drones operate and then get a chance to y some.
Classes must be scheduled individually.
Some participants take several classes each day, while others just participate in a few classes over a day or two. This exibility allows people to customize their experience.
The program is for any intergenerational adult and child. Some adults sign up for classes with more than one child. Most participating children range from ages 5 to 12. Cost varies by class. Some have materials fees, while others have no fee. If you schedule a full day of classes, you can bring lunch or eat at Sid’s Co ee shop & Deli in the same building.
Ageless Adventures is not a “summer camp” or babysitting option. Any child registered for classes must be accompanied by a parent/ guardian in order to attend.

DINING IN THE DARK
Hosted in the Magnolia Room on June 9 from 7-9pm, guests will be guided into a specially designed dining room that is completely void of any light. The idea behind this concept is to enhance the sense of taste, smell and touch by removing the distraction of sight.
09 JUNE
Once seated, guests will be served a multi-course meal by trained waitstaff who are equipped with night vision goggles to navigate in the dark. Each dish is carefully prepared to highlight the flavors and textures of the ingredients used, while the absence of sight forces diners to focus on their other senses.
Guests will arrive at 6:30pm and are
greeted with a complimentary cocktail and a brief orientation. Although the menu is a mystery for diners, the restaurant will call you in advance to confirm your reservation and find out about any allergies. The event is for guests 21 and over, and the experience costs $65 per person. You can learn more and book your seat at cantinaocala.com/dininginthedark.

GATHER SOME FRIENDS AND PREPARE THE ULTIMATE SUMMERTIME FEAST—A CAJUN SEAFOOD BOIL.
WRITTEN BY MELISSA PETERSON
Aseafood boil is just as much a social event as it is a yummy feast of tastes and smells. Although the type of seafood included varies by region and preference, most seafood boils of the Louisiana Cajun tradition, include shrimp, crab and craw sh. Other variations might also include lobster tails, blue crabs, oysters and clams, as well as ears of corn, potatoes, onions, heads of garlic, mushrooms and smoked sausage.
In the traditional Cajun boil, the seafood is usually boiled—hence the name—in a very large stock pot. Seasonings include crab boil packets, cayenne pepper, hot sauce, salt, lemons and bay leaf. Once done, the seafood along with the corn, potatoes, sausage and veggies are all combined and placed directly on the table. It’s very common at boils for the host to spread out newspaper on the table and place all the combined food right on top. The newspaper makes cleanup a breeze, as the newspaper can simply be rolled up and thrown away along with any leftover scraps.

FLORIDA FRESH
2 J’s Seafood o ers fresh, sustainably sourced, wild-caught seafood right here in North Central Florida. And the business conveniently operates at a variety of farmers markets in Ocala and nearby.
Owner James Goguen and his partner, John (the other J in the 2 J’s name), started their business in 2006. Both were working for themselves when they saw a need for fresh seafood in North Central Florida.
“We got started at farmers markets,” says James, “and continue them because it keeps us in touch with our customer base.”
As far as fresh seafood goes, 2 J’s o ers a huge array of options, including Maine and spiny lobster tails, king crab, stone and soft-shell crab, conch, prawns and shrimp of multiple sizes,
oysters, New England and Florida sea scallops, alligator tail and frog legs, as well as di erent types of sh like halibut, grouper, yellow n tuna, red snapper, haddock, codcat sh and tilapia—as well as many others.
“Some things are seasonal,” says James, “but generally speaking, if it comes out of the ocean, we can get it.”
When preparing his own seafood boils, James likes to include Gulf shrimp, bay scallops, mussels or clams, and a white sh like cod or haddock.
“Everything has di erent cooking times,” says James, “so personally, I cook individually and add to the pot after potatoes, corn and sausage are done.”

TIPS FOR TASTE
If you’re looking for a speci c recipe, you can nd plenty of options with just a quick internet search. But to get you started, here is some
fun advice as well as a few helpful tips.
Make it a community event. To do it right, you’ll probably be making a large quantity of food, which means it’s the perfect opportunity to invite over friends and family. Ask your guests to bring the beer and maybe even $10 to share in the cost of the seafood if they’re close friends.
Have the right tools. An extra-large stock pot as well as a propane jet cooker are exactly what you need to make plenty of food for a large group.
Don’t over think it. The nice thing about seafood boils—beyond the community aspect of enjoying the feast—is there is no one right or wrong way to make it. Everyone can feel free to add in the types of seafood and extras that they personally enjoy.
Set the table. Don’t decide against the newspapers on the tables—it’s part of the downhome appeal. You’ll also want to include butter, salt and pepper, hot sauce, lemon wedges and a role of paper towels on each table. Also, keep the crab boil seasoning handy. You might want to add more as you work your way though the meal to keep everything extra spicy.
