WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
Rhythm. You either have it or you don’t, right?
Not necessarily. Sometimes we just need to learn.
Lifelong musician Sean Thomas believes the universal language of rhythm can connect hearts and minds. It’s his mission to spread that language far and wide. He founded Ocala Steel Orchestra to introduce more people to the world of steelpan and percussion music.
Sean, who has been playing since age 7, hails from Trinidad and Tobago, home of the steelpan.
“I grew up learning the steelpan through my dad, Leroy Thomas, who led his own steelpan orchestra, 3rd Dimension, and became one of the best. That eventually became Moods Steel Orchestra, which is still running, and is now managed by my brother, Roger, and our mother, Emelda,” says Sean, whose grandmother, Ru na Thomas, was one of the rst women in the world to play the steelpan.
THE STEELPAN INSTRUMENT CARRIES A MELODY JUST LIKE A PIANO OR TRUMPET. WE CAN PLAY ANY TYPE OF MUSIC, FROM CALYPSO AND REGGAE TO JAZZ, R&B, SOUL AND POP.
SEAN
THOMAS, FOUNDER
A talented jazz performer who has played drums with many musicians, including steelpans, Sean studied jazz at the former Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the New England Conservatory in Boston and graduated in 1997.
After coming to Ocala in 2018, Sean worked at the Boys and Girls Club and received a grant from Marion Cultural Alliance to buy steelpan
instruments to teach the kids.
“I left the Boys and Girls Club in 2022 to form SeanTMusic Global LLC, including Ocala Arts and Entertainment Podcast,” says Sean.
He founded Ocala Steel Orchestra in January 2023 and hopes to grow it to over 120 members.
There are about 30 instruments in the orchestra, all made from oil drums. Because of the varying sizes and dimensions, each has a di erent sound.
“The steelpan instrument carries a melody just like a piano or trumpet,” explains Sean. “We can play any type of music, from Calypso and reggae to jazz, R&B, soul and pop.”
Classes take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-7:45pm at the Lillian F.
Bryant Community Center in Ocala.
Ocala Steel Orchestra is a 501(c)(3) nonpro t organization, so there is no cost to participate.
“We teach free music literacy and are open to anyone, starting at age 7,” says Sean.
Because of how much music has enriched his own life, Sean is eager to share it with others, especially youth.

GONE FISHIN’
GRAB THE FISHING POLES AND YOUR LITTLE ONE AND HEAD TO ONE OF OCALA’S CITY PARKS FOR AN IMPROMPTU FISHING LESSON.
WRITTEN BY KARIN FABRY-CUSHENBERY
There’s something to be said for quiet mornings spent sitting by the water, shing pole in hand, waiting for that unmistakable tug on the line. You feel it, the adrenaline starts pumping and you pull back on the line, reeling in quickly. Doesn’t this sound like an experience you want to share with your favorite kid? We think so, too. And Dads, Moms, Grandparents, listen up… you don’t have to trek all the way to the forest to spend a memorable morning shing.
“The City of Ocala allows catch-and-release shing in four of their nature parks, including Tuscawilla park, Toms Park, Ritterho Park and S. Stanley Malever Nature Park,” says Ashley Dobbs, Marketing and Communications Manager, O ce of Strategic Engagement for the City of Ocala. “The City provides opportunities for shing enthusiasts to enjoy the outdoors while promoting conservation through catch-and-release practices. This type of shing program provides an activity for kids to experience the thrill of shing while also learning about conservation and respecting nature. Citizens can participate in this activity year-round; however, the Ocala Recreation and Parks Department hosts shing events throughout the year geared toward children and seniors.”
So how do you begin if shing isn’t the norm for you? All you really need are some size-appropriate shing poles and a few lures to start. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, visit a local bait shop and pick up a container of worms, too. Stadium chairs, a lunchbox with waters and snacks, sunscreen and bug spray will round out your supply bag. Consider bringing a
life jacket for the little one as well, just in case.
The website takeme shing.org has some great pointers for teaching kids to sh. Step one is to plan your trip with your kids in mind. That’s already a big check since you’ll be shing in an area park complete with working bathrooms. If the kids aren’t into shing, the swings are nearby! It’s easy to get discouraged with shing if you’re not getting any bites, so encourage the kids to explore the water’s edge (safety rst always!) if they get bored with shing try looking for bugs and minnows or collecting rocks. Keep your rst few outings simple and short, working on their cast and technique. Also, be sure to teach your kids to be gentle with the sh if a catch is made. Remember, it’s catch and release, so we want the sh to be happy and healthy when they make their way back to the water.
The city also reminds us to take care of our parks and leave them exactly as we found them.
“While utilizing the parks, it’s important to
properly dispose of shing line and not leave any items unattended to ensure the safety of wildlife and maintain the cleanliness of the parks,” says Ashley.
When you snag your rst sh, and even your second and third, have the phone ready to snap a quick photo before you release your catch. After all, it’s all about spending quality time together and creating memories.

NAMED FOR MAUREEN ANDERS AND ADRIA RUFF, THE WOMEN WHO ORIGINALLY FOUNDED THE FRANCHISE, AR WORKSHOP HAS RECENTLY OPENED IN OCALA, AND IF YOU HAVE A CRAFTY SIDE THAT’S ITCHING TO GET OUT, IT’S DEFINITELY WORTH EXPLORING.
WRITTEN BY KARIN FABRY-CUSHENBERY
Since opening this past February in the Shady Oaks Plaza in Ocala, AR Workshop has been providing Ocala residents and beyond with a creative escape from life’s everyday responsibilities.
Just walking through the door at AR Workshop will get you itching to be creative and crafty. Various paint colors, a scent mixology station, pieces of un nished wood, stencils and dozens of inspiration pieces are enough to put you into sensory overload—in a good way.
Owner Debbie Machtel, who is the former owner of the Chick- l-A in the Paddock Mall, was looking for something di erent to do when she decided on AR Workshop.
“I wanted to stay in Ocala and start a new business that would still be a big part of the community,” she says. “I enjoy spending quality time with people, hearing their stories and about their backgrounds. It brings me joy to provide this outlet and a place for people to come together and enjoy themselves.”
AR Workshop o ers both scheduled classes Wednesdays through Saturdays, plus a walk-in craft bar Mondays through Saturdays from 125pm. Stenciled wooden signs, string art, trays, chunky knit blankets and lazy susans are just some of the projects available to make. You can follow a plan or be creative and create an original.
“Right now, candle-making and hat burning are our most popular projects,” says Debbie. “We o er 7-ounce jar candles in a variety of styles,
from gold and wooden jars to farmhouse style, plus dozens of scents to choose from. Many mix several scents to make their own and even add in dried owers to the wax. We o er two- and three-wick candles.”
And hat burning, with your choice of baseball cap, cowboy hat or fedora, is widely popular in other areas of the country and quickly gaining momentum here. That’s Debbie’s plan—to make sure AR Workshop stays on top of the latest trends and o ers them to her clients.
This summer, in addition to their everyday o erings, AR Workshop is o ering a summer’s worth of week-long summer camps for kids ages 6-12.
“Each week will feature a di erent theme,” Debbie says. “Things like sports-related projects like medal displays, glam and room refresher art, even a doll and me project where the younger kids can make a matching pillow or shirt for themselves
and their doll.”
AR Workshop also o ers team-building events, parties and get-togethers of all types, and fundraising opportunities for local charities and groups. Plus, you’ll have to check out the cozy, friendly retail space at AR, where you can purchase a variety of fun items, including home décor, great gifts and more. Debbie says the possibilities are limitless.
“You don’t have to be an artist or a creative person to come and have a good time and make something,” Debbie says. “You just have to be able to follow directions. The best part of all of this for me is seeing people happy and relaxed. I like seeing people excited and proud of what they’ve created here. Feel free to bring your own beer or wine and snacks. This is a place to relax and have fun.”

BE THE BEST YOU
WHEN IT COMES TO LIVING OUR BEST LIVES, WE COULD ALL USE A LITTLE HELP. THAT’S THE CALLING BEHIND REGENOCALA.
“We are the leading regenerative practice in Central Florida,” notes founder Jeffrey Piccirillo, DO, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. “Our mission statement is ‘Making You, the Best You,’ focusing on healing people from the inside out using the body’s own innate healing powers.’”
RegenOcala is dedicated to helping people become the healthiest versions of themselves.
To showcase this mission, Saturday, June 1, from 12-5pm, marks their one-year anniversary grand reopening celebration featuring live music and refreshments.
If you have ever been curious about regenerative medicine and how it can help you, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more—and have fun at the same time.
REGENERATIVE MEDICINE USES STEM CELLS, PLATELETRICH PLASMA (PRP) AND BONE MARROW ASPIRATE CONCENTRATE (BMAC) THERAPIES TO REDUCE INFLAMMATION, PROMOTE HEALING AND HELP RESTORE NORMAL FUNCTION.
“Come and see the new space, learn about what we have to offer and see how we’re different than other med spas and regenerative practices,” says Practice Manager Jennifer Piccirillo.
HELPING YOU HEAL
Regenerative medicine uses stem cells, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow
aspirate concentrate (BMAC) therapies to reduce inflammation, promote healing and help restore normal function.
“It’s about harnessing the body’s healing cells and using them to regenerate tissue anywhere in the body you need it,” explains Dr. Jeff.
At RegenOcala, you’ll nd regenerative therapies and wellness treatments to address a wide range of conditions, including osteoarthritis, back pain, sport injuries, ligament and tendon injuries, rotator cu injuries, acne, cellulite, hair loss, sexual health,
erectile dysfunction, bio-identical hormone replacement (men and women), weight loss, aesthetics (facials, Botox® and llers), and nutritional and vitamin assessments.
Unlike traditional Western medicine, there are no drugs used in regenerative therapies.
“We prescribe no medication; we’re not about Big Pharma,” says Dr. Jeff. “We’re all about getting people healthy and allowing their bodies to regenerate themselves.”
After practicing conventional orthopedic surgery for over 20 years, Dr. Jeff discovered his true passion in 2002 using PRP. Amazed with the results, he transitioned completely to regenerative medicine in 2009.
“I realized back in 2008 that patients no
26 352PREVIEW.COM PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
longer had any autonomy over their care,” he says. “We could only do what the insurance companies and Big Pharma allowed us to do—and it wasn’t always the best thing for the patient. Now we’re able to touch the lives of people and help them heal, not just give them a pill to cover up their symptoms.”
A TEAM APPROACH
At RegenOcala, you’ll find a whole team committed to helping people feel and look their best.
Although Dr. Jeff runs the practice, he’s brought in a group of experts from around the country, including a pain management physician, orthopedic specialist, psychiatric
nurse practitioner specializing in PTSD, massage therapist and aesthetician.
“We’re trying to bring the best of every field to one location,” says Jennifer. “The person doing your Botox® is not the same person injecting your knee.”
A common misconception is that regenerative medicine is too expensive for most people to afford. Jennifer explains that when you factor in your co-pay from traditional treatment, you often pay less for regenerative therapies and aren’t tied to medications for the rest of your life.
Most people who want to feel better also want to look better. It just made sense to offer services that enhance the appearance.
Among the providers is aesthetician Olivia Ortiz, who opened her practice, The House of Shoogie, this year and is now joining the RegenOcala team. She has been making all the products she uses since 2009 and officially formulated her own skin care line, Shoogie Company.
“A lot of people don’t realize that every skin care product you buy—from deodorant to face cream—isn’t regulated by the FDA,” says Olivia, who has lived in Ocala since 1987. “I started making my own products after a health scare because I know the importance of having safe products to put on your body and your babies’ bodies.”
Every product Olivia makes is chemical free, 100 percent natural, mostly organic and made with food-grade ingredients. Made in small batches, ingredient sources include country of
origin for shea butter and coconut oil and also locally from small farms in Florida.
“When I first met Olivia, I tried to buy her company because I loved what she was doing making all natural products,” says Dr. Jeff. “Now we’re working together.”
He and Jennifer are the proud parents of two grown children, Tricia and Brian. Although they do not have two-legged grandkids, they adore their Great Pyrenees puppy, Bruno.
Lovers of good music and art, the team at RegenOcala is pleased to sponsor community events that include both. Don’t miss their next “Couch Session” event on June 7, an evening of art and music during which the audience becomes part of the show.
If you’re looking for an approach that promotes the body’s natural ability to heal, rather than relies on medication, reach out to RegenOcala. They’re committed to improving health one patient at a time. The next success story could be your own!

PAIN, BE GONE!
DISCOVER THE SECRETS TO LASTING RELIEF WITH PRACTITIONER-ASSISTED STRETCHING FROM GET STRETCH’D.
Day-to-day life, stress and aging all take a toll on your body. Whether you’re dealing with aches and pains, a job that keeps you at a desk, strenuous athletic activities or a demanding schedule that creates both physical and mental stress, one-on-one assisted stretching can provide you with vital relief and both immediate and long-term solutions. Stretching is a necessity for range of motion, exibility and preventing imbalances that can cause issues like back pain and impingements.
Get Stretch’d, Ocala’s premier stretching studio located in Churchill Square Shopping Center, next to Publix, can address those issues and get you feeling your best. If you’d like to see a quick YouTube video of an assisted stretch demo, scan the QR code. And if you’ve never heard of assisted stretching, these questions and answers may help you decide if assisted stretching is worth a try.
I CAN STRETCH MYSELF. WHY DO I NEED ASSISTED STRETCHING?
Assisted stretching allows your body to relax and push past your body’s normal range of motion that is halted by your stretch re ex. Our skilled stretch professionals provide active dynamic stretching with added resistance that will give you a deeper stretch with maximum bene ts. You’ll experience isolated stretches that target speci c muscle groups needed to give you relief.
HOW IS PRACTITIONER-ASSISTED STRETCHING DIFFERENT FROM MASSAGE?
Stretching is practically painless, and stretching is a necessity for everyone. When you elongate your connective tissues, you increase exibility, mitigate pain and improve your overall body health.
DOES STRETCHING
HELP WITH SCIATICA OR OTHER PAIN?
Yes, stretching can alleviate or eliminate pain from head to toe, including sciatica, plantar fasciitis and lower back, hip and knee pain. It also increases circulation, exibility and range of motion, reduces tension and body stress, improves mobility and decreases risk of injury. In most cases, we can help those with hip and knee replacements, as well as those with shoulder repairs.
WHO IS STRETCHING ME? ARE THEY TRAINED IN THIS FIELD?
You are being stretched by well-trained, professional, certi ed stretchers who all have backgrounds in anatomy and physiology, ranging from physical therapy, occupational therapy, kinesiology, physical training and exercise science.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
You can see results immediately depending on the severity of your complications, but a consistent stretching plan will increase those health bene ts over time. Just like any activity, consistency is key.
IS STRETCHING EXPENSIVE? DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?
No. It’s extremely a ordable! We accept cash, checks and credit cards, plus select FSA and HSA reimbursements.
