Ocala’s beautiful downtown was incorporated as a town in 1869 with signi cant development happening during the 1880s, creating the downtown square we know and love today. On Thanksgiving Day 1883, while most of Ocala’s residents were celebrating the holiday on Lake Weir, a re started and swept through the center of town destroying ve blocks of the business district. During the rebuilding process, wooden structures were replaced by brick and other re-resistant materials, giving Ocala a new moniker.

With October 9-15 being National Fire Prevention Week and Halloween at the end of the month, Ocala Main Street’s Executive Director Jessica Fieldhouse says the story of The Great Fire was a perfect t to showcase one of Ocala’s most terrifying events and the origin story of why our city is now called The Brick City.

“Join us as we share the original horror story of Ocala following along the treacherous path laid by The Great Fire,” says Jessica. “This downtown Ocala walking tour is a two-hour event and approximately one mile long, with stops into local bars to enjoy three ery drinks.”

Ocala Main Street (OMS) has partnered with the Historic Ocala Preservation Society, the Florida Historic Trust and the City of Ocala to create self-guided walking tours of many downtown historic properties. The OMS board decided to host in-person tours for our community, which are held once a quarter. All tours are themed to focus on di erent historic buildings and stories. Past tours have included “Waterways and Watering Holes,” which followed the Floridan aquifer below the city streets and

ecently, the Palm Grove Club at Oak Run was the lively scene of the 11th annual Sportsman Dinner and Auction hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Ocala. The dress was casual, and the BBQ dinner was delicious as enthusiastic guests bid generously in live and silent auctions.

With the funds raised, the Kiwanis will be able to provide valuable services to Marion County children.

“What a fun year making a di erence and changing the lives of children within our community,” said Tammy Ho , Kiwanis president and public education and outreach coordinator of Ocala Electric Utility. “Kiwanis Club of Ocala inspires you, friendships are made and personal growth happens. We are local people making a local di erence in our community. Kids need Kiwanis.”

Kiwanis Club of Ocala is the local chapter of Kiwanis International. This is the only worldwide service club dedicated to improving the lives of children. Through various service and fundraising projects, the Kiwanis serve the children of the local community. A special committee called “Children First” focuses on improving the lives of all children but especially children who might not have positive in uences in their lives. The Kiwanis believe in building a stronger future for Marion County by providing children with academics, literacy and citizenship. Their high school Key Clubs teach service and leadership to high school students. Key Club students are involved with many service opportunities by volunteering in the community.

One of the best-known programs is Camp Kiwanis, where the Kiwanis partner with the Marion County school district to send children to camp for one week during the summer. Other programs emphasize reading, safety and bringing up grades. The Kiwanis Club of Ocala depends upon fundraisers to assist our most valuable treasure of our children.

Although board games have never really lost their prominence, certain games are known for their fanatic cult followings. Catan, Risk, Dominion, Pandemic—even Monopoly. One game that has once again raced to the top of the cultural lexicon is Dungeons & Dragons. Although the game itself isn’t new (it was rst published in 1974), its popularity is on the rise thanks to its role in the hit show Stranger Things

One group here in Ocala is actively introducing new players to the game and putting together events for fellow Dungeons & Dragons players around the city.

Ocalian Knights started as a podcast/stream run out of the CEP’s Power Plant Business Incubator by Zeneration Media. The streaming side evolved into Undeniably Good Time, a digital content creating company. Ocalian Knights is now a community outreach organization that breaks down barriers to entry into tabletop gaming and helps people realize how fun and easy it can be.

“The Ocalian Knights was started by Ryan

Mace and David Lugo as a streaming campaign to promote Ryan’s Zeneration Media brand,” says member Greg Wesolowski, when asked about the origins of the group. “Ryan has moved out of state for work, and David Lugo now works with Undeniably Good Time with their streaming platform.”

For anyone unfamiliar with the game, Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game where players create their characters and are guided by one player—known as the Dungeon

Master—through the narrative and combat. The game was invented by Gary Gygax in the ‘70s and has undergone numerous changes to the core rules over the years, and it’s currently in its fth edition. People are drawn to the game thanks in part to its collaborative storytelling. Each tabletop group goes through adventures together, creating characters, sharing memories and developing an entire story in the process.

“People like to play for the friendship and bonds,” says Greg. “It’s a non-digital, fun, cooperative experience where you sit and tell a story with friends. Others should play for the experience and the comradery. You’ll experience a new kind of magic.”

The Ocalian Knights are looking to get more people involved in the game through their events, which they’ve titled Heroes Wanted. The

organization is currently working with the Marion County Public Library System to host these events, which are geared toward rst-time players. The games boast simple rules and quick, fun, 45-minute adventures that show new players the basics of the game. If they enjoy the experience, they can pick up an additional rule set.

Heroes Wanted takes place about twice a quarter. There is no experience or supplies necessary. The events are geared toward adults and teens, but arrangements can be made for younger kids, too. Registration with the host library is recommended. The events usually include multiple sessions and sometimes include character-building workshops. CREATURES OF THE NIGHT

Florida is home to many animals that are most often encountered after dark. And many of them, unfortunately, get a bad rap thanks to their nocturnal habits. We spoke with Brian Pope, director of the Lubee Bat Conservancy in Gainesville, and Jade Salamone, conservation education curator with the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, to unmask Florida’s “creatures of the night” and nd out how you can get a better look at them during daylight hours.

BATS

All bats of North Central Florida are nocturnal, meaning they are active for hunting, mating and socializing during nighttime hours. And if you happen to spot one, you’ll be happy to know, they’re all also insectivorous—meaning the bats you’ll encounter aren’t out to suck your blood. Brian Pope says that people are scared of bats thanks mostly to myths and false information. Also, bats are the No. 1 predator of nocturnal insects, like mosquitoes and agricultural pests, so it’s about time we started viewing them more as a friend.

In the wild, you’re most likely to see bats approximately 10 minutes before sunset when they’re leaving their homes for the night. If you want to learn more about bats and how you can help protect them (two Florida bat species are federally endangered), a visit to the Lubee Bat Conservancy is in order. And October is the perfect time to go, thanks to the annual Florida Bat Fest, happening this year on October 22 from

ARMADILLOS

The armadillos you will nd in Florida are ninebanded armadillos and are usually most active at night. Their hard, scaly shell helps protect them. Armadillos can be bene cial because they eat insects we may consider pests, like ants and wasps. Although you’re probably most likely to see armadillos while they’re harmlessly scurrying around looking for food, Jade Salamone says that she always recommends people leave wildlife alone when they come across them.

OWLS

Barred owls, Barn owls, Great Horned owls, Burrowing owls and Screech owls are some of the many owls you could see in Florida. Owls are nocturnal and hunt at night, which is when their prey are most active. Owls are especially e ective at hunting because they have silent ight. Before you see an owl, you’re more likely to hear their persistent hooting (or hissing or screeching, depending on the species), but if you do see them, you’ll likely see them swooping through the trees at night looking for a meal.

SNAKES

Reptiles can be nocturnal or diurnal, or active during the day. In Florida, it is very possible to come across a reptile, especially a little anole or snake like a black racer or corn snake. These animals are not dangerous if you don’t harass them. We also do have six types of venomous snakes in Florida. The best thing to do when you come upon a snake is to stop, observe what direction they are going, appreciate their beauty and slowly step away, according to Jade.

BEARS, BOBCATS & FOXES

Bears are mainly diurnal, which means they’re most active during the day—although if you’ve seen any home security footage of bear spottings on social media, you’ll agree that bears seem pretty interested in our yards at any time of the day. In our area, you may come across a bobcat or fox, which mainly hunt at dawn and dusk. The best way you can avoid inviting these kinds of animals onto your property is by securing all food sources and never feeding them.

SANTA FE COLLEGE TEACHING ZOO VISITING THE

The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, a unique 10-acre zoo in Gainesville is the only zoo on a college campus accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo is open to the public seven days a week from 9am3pm. The zoo showcases a diverse collection that contains both native and exotic species, such as Bald Eagles, white-throated capuchin monkeys, American alligators, Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo and Asian small-clawed otters to name a few. COYOTES

Coyotes may live in family groups but tend to hunt alone. They can be found in many environments, including urban or rural areas. It’s not uncommon to hear their noisy barks and yelps from your backyard. Coyotes are opportunistic and drawn mainly to the things we leave in our yards or by our curbs. If you come across one, Jade suggests you make a lot of noise to encourage it to move away. They are not trying to incite an attack.

OPOSSUMS

In Florida, we have the Virginia opossum species, which are most active at night. While they might look scary when they hiss to scare away predators, they are most commonly known for “playing possum” and pretending to be dead. “I got to see this in action recently when my dog approached a young opossum in my backyard,” says Jade. “The technique totally worked!”

FREAKY FACT: IF SURPRISED BY A PREDATOR, OPOSSUMS WILL ENTER A CATATONIC, UNCONSCIOUS STATE. “PLAYING DEAD” IS INVOLUNTARY. THEY ALSO EMIT A STINKY SUBSTANCE DURING THIS STATE.

RACCOONS

Raccoons are mainly nocturnal but may feed during the day if food is available. They are extremely crafty and can get into a lot of precarious places to get to food. If an animal feels it needs to defend itself, it could become aggressive, so if you see one, simply walk away.

If you’ve never been to an escape room, you could consider it part puzzle, part task mastering, part detective work and total teamwork. Typically, players have an hour to complete a series of tasks and solve clues to “escape” from the room successfully. Ocala has two such destinations, The Ocala Escape and Huddy’s Escape. We have tried them both and would recommend either. Actually, we recommend them both because once you try one room, you’ll most likely want to keep playing to see what the other rooms have to o er. So far, we have stayed with the family friendly-themed rooms involving magic and wizardry, but we’re ready to take that next step and try one of the more intense rooms. One thing’s for sure: No matter which room you choose, it’s guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping. After 20 years, Orlando’s most famous Halloween costume party is making its return to the Cheyenne Saloon. Ticket prices range from $80-$150 (when purchased early online) and are all-inclusive, including food and drink tastings from some of Orlando’s best bars and restaurants.
