ACTIONPACKED RACING
WRITTEN BY JOHN MCEARCHERN
As the August sun rises over the Atlantic Ocean, unfamiliar floating megaliths are silhouetted against the glare of daybreak. Only when the sun continues its rise higher into the morning sky are the colors of the giant vinyl buoys revealed. Crews are working steadily in the sand and waves behind the Hard Rock Hotel in Daytona Beach to move even more of the floating balloonlike structures into the crashing waves before Saturday’s excitement can begin.
On August 19 and 20, P1 AquaX will bring back the white-knuckle excitement of personal watercraft endurance racing to the waves of Daytona Beach for its 10th season. Over 40 professional and amateur racers will return to the birthplace of speed, both on and off the water, for 2 days of multiple races vying for points toward the world championship in November. As one of five events in a shortened season, this event has high stakes and usually even higher
surf, guaranteeing an action-packed weekend.
The surf and sand of “The World’s Most Famous Beach” are actually where P1 AquaX began its humble existence before rising to the height of PWC enduro racing. Inspired by decades of events and organizations striving for racing legitimacy but falling short, P1 brought a level of professionalism the industry was yet to see. That same standard still holds true today under the direction of Championship Manager Michelle Petro, who was there on day one 10 years ago. The first event had seven racers
show up to participate.
“AquaX is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year,” says Michelle, “and the series has grown to be a recognized personal watercraft series by attracting national brands such as Monster Energy and Yamaha Powersports as series sponsors.”
Fans attending the event for the first time can expect to be sucked into the high-speed drama after only a couple of laps into the first 30-minute moto. While operating watercraft from Yamaha, SeaDoo and Kawasaki, racers battle for the fastest line on a constantly shifting course that covers both crashing waves in the shore break and rolling waves out beyond them. Courses stretch to nearly two miles, and participants earn points

P1 AQUAX PERSONAL WATERCRAFT ENDURANCE RACING IS COMING TO DAYTONA BEACH THIS MONTH.
WATCH
ON AUGUST 19 AND 20, P1 AQUAX WILL BRING BACK THE WHITE-KNUCKLE EXCITEMENT OF PERSONAL WATERCRAFT ENDURANCE RACING TO THE WAVES OF DAYTONA BEACH FOR ITS 10TH SEASON.

for completing as many laps as they can over a 30-minute timeframe. Unlike other motorsports, AquaX racers must traverse an unpredictable and ever-changing racing surface. While the course doesn’t change shape between heats, the water they’re racing on is never the same, and the conditions here in Daytona Beach have become a thing of legend for good reason.
Traditionally, the event was held in April, but organizers have shifted to a summer date to ensure adequate accommodations for the event, participants and fans. The spring event was subject to more violent changes in conditions, but the summer version still has plenty of big wave jumps and shallow water risks for an outside run at smoother water.
Riders take big chances for big advantages when timing and position play out perfectly amongst the surf. It’s not always rewarded though. Racers come off their watercraft at unbelievable speed with the slightest miscalculation. Bruises, stitches and the rare broken bone are often the price paid for a slip up when running in excess of 70mph in some instances.
This race isn’t just for the spectators on the beach though. The racers all have fond and specific memories of this particular venue and race site. Some amazing and some of them not so great. Whether it’s the beach or the host hotel, the Hard Rock Hotel, there’s something to look forward to for everyone. For amateur 300 class rider Valnetina Lezcano it’s
the entire vibe of all those elements coming together in one place for one awesome weekend of racing.
“Daytona is such a meaningful place for racing in general,” Valentina says. “I love staying at the Hard Rock because they make us racers feel like celebrities from the moment we get there to the moment we leave. All in all, I’m ready for Daytona!”
For folks interested in seeing what P1 AquaX is all about up close and personal from a beachside vantage point, a beach pass for the day will get you close enough to see what the fuss is all about. Admission is free, and spectators can watch from the shore or view from the deck at the Hard Rock Hotel. Shade and a seat are recommended.

MAKE A SPLASH FOR MAX
SUPPORT THE ARTS AND KEEP COOL WITH MAGNOLIA ART XCHANGE’S WILD WATERS SPLASH N DASH FUNDRAISING EVENT.
WRITTEN BY JESSE JAMES
Summer is upon us, bringing scorching temperatures that have us looking for a refreshing escape. Well, get ready to beat the heat and have a blast. Later this month, the Magnolia Art Xchange is hosting an exciting event that is sure to keep you cool—the Wild Waters Splash n Dash, presented by TJM Promos. Not only will you get to beat the summer heat and have fun doing so, but you will also support Ocala’s local arts community.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Tuscawilla Park, the Wild Waters Splash n Dash will wind its way through the park, allowing participants to cool off and admire the artwork on display. Contestants will receive a pristine white T-shirt, serving as a personal canvas throughout the waterfilled course. The mission is to navigate a designated route and capture challenge flags at each different colored “Splash Zone.” Each splash zone will be manned by volunteers doing their best to drench that pristine shirt.
The objective? Secure as many challenge flags as possible while keeping your shirt as white as can be. The contestant with the whitest shirt and the most challenge flags will claim the prestigious Wild Waters Cup—a remarkable trophy crafted by the resident artists at Magnolia Art Xchange. However, if
you return with all the challenge flags but no traces of white left on your shirt, you’ll be awarded your very own Wild Waters Splash Blaster as a special recognition.
Greg Wesolowski, vice president of the MAX board of directors, spoke about the event’s conception and purpose.
“We needed an event for our summer fundraiser,” he explains, “It’s hot! Also, it rains every afternoon. We decided to incorporate a water element and make it open to everyone! Naming the event after the old Wild Waters park was the best tribute we could come up with for summer fun in Marion County.”
Furthermore, Greg emphasizes that the
event aims to support MAX’s mission.
“This event is a fundraiser to support our local art incubator, the Magnolia Art Xchange” says Greg. “The most unique part about this is it gives us all an excuse to put our phones down and have a big water adventure in Tuscawilla and just have some fun beating the heat.”

MAKING AN IMPACT
THE ANNUAL ROYAL DAMES FOR CANCER RESEARCH GALA RECENTLY RAISED MONEY TO FIGHT CANCER.
RONALD W. WETHERINGTON, SOCIAL EDITOR
An evening to celebrate, enjoy and give generously was recently hosted at the Circle Square Cultural Center by the Ocala Royal Dames for Cancer Research. “Fire and Ice” was a night dedicated to raising money to ght cancer. The hope is to have a cure in our lifetimes. Co-Chairs Robin Gump and Nancy Porter actualized their vision for this signature event to have lots of fun and raise money for the mission to fund education and research programs.
“I want to remember with love and a smile those of our family and friends we lost to cancer this year and the previous years,” said Dr. Patricia Tennant Sokol, president of the Ocala Royal Dames for Cancer Research, during the event. “It is for them and those ghting cancer today that we dedicate our e orts.”
This 36th annual signature event began with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Next came an invocation by Master of Ceremonies Dr. David Sokol and a welcome by Dr. Patricia Sokol. After a bu et dinner, excitement built for the live auction by auctioneer Greg Lord. The casino opened with music and dancing as well as a desert and co ee bar.
“I am sure the Fire and Ice Gala and Casino Night was the talk of the town,” says Theresa’s daughter, Bernadette Castro. “So many have worked so hard to make it Ocala’s most special event of the year. My mother, Theresa Castro, who founded the Royal Dames so many decades ago, is smiling down, so proud of how we have grown this wonderful organization and raised so much funding for cancer research.”
Recently, this summer, the Cathy D. Perry Trust Distribution made a generous donation of $263,432.72. Hopefully, such a large contribution will encourage others to reach deep into their pockets to combat cancer.
The Ocala Royal Dames annual fundraiser always sells out fast. Save the date now for Saturday, March 16, 2024 for the organization’s Masquerade Ball. It is a black-tie event and will be one of the most prestigious events of the Ocala/Marion County social season.

ARTIFACT ADVENTURES
TREASURE SEEKERS NOW HAVE A NEW SPOT IN CENTRAL FLORIDA TO DIG FOR NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIFACTS.
WRITTEN BY MELISSA PETERSON
Searching for treasure is something that has intrigued the old and young alike since the beginning of time. Now there’s a new way to dig for ancient artifacts right here in Central Florida thanks to Rob Jones, president and founder of The Big Dig Florida, which opened in 2022.
As a lifelong artifact hunter who has spent the last 30-plus years digging for and collecting Florida artifacts, Rob realized there was nothing like this in Florida.
“I wanted to make this thrilling and adventurous experience available to fellow outdoor enthusiasts and history bu s like me who have a passion for ancient Florida Native American relics,” says Rob. “Over the years, I had constantly been approached by people asking where and how to nd these treasures, and I wanted to expand the experience outside of the
very tightknit artifact community to make it available to more ‘artifact-curious’ people.”
The Big Dig Florida operates on what are known as lithic scatter sites and encampments, which means that early inhabitants of the area lived, shed and hunted there over various time periods and left items, such as stone, shell and bone tools, as well as stone debitage and pottery shards, behind.
“We have a deep respect for these ancient Native people and their heritage and customs,” says Rob, “and The Big Dig Florida is meant to honor and educate people about their lives and our early Florida history. We of course stay away from sacred or historically signi cant sites, like burial mounds, and abide by all state laws and customs surrounding them so that they are not disturbed.”
There are two ways to experience The Big Dig
Florida. Rob o ers both screen digs and hand digs. For visitors who choose the screen digs, the company brings the dirt to them and places it on a four-person screen table in front of them. Visitors then stand and sift the dirt through the screen openings on the table to reveal the artifacts. They bring the artifact-laden dirt to each table continuously throughout the day, and there is no limit to the number of loads processed on each table. They supply gloves and a great lunch from the Cherry Pocket Restaurant.
For hand digs, diggers bring their own shovels and equipment and are allowed to dig within designated areas on the site. If visitors do not have their own tools, the company has plenty of shovels for visitors to borrow. Both types of digging are rewarding, and cultural materials will be found with either dig service. Unlimited cold bottled water is provided for all diggers.
“Typically, our visitors will nd stone tools and arrowheads and projectile points—whether whole or broken—that were used by early inhabitants to hunt, kill and process the foods that they harvested,” explains Rob. “They also nd shards of ancient hand-made pottery that was used to cook, serve and store their food. At times, they may also nd decorative items like stone and bone beads, modi ed shark teeth and other bone relics that adorned the ancient Native Americans’ clothing, hair, tools and lodgings.”
The current Big Dig Florida site is located in Polk County between Haines City and Lake Wales. Nearby is the Cherry Pocket Restaurant and Resort that o ers RV camping and cabins. Current rates for The Big Dig Florida are $250 per person for screen digs and $100 per person for a full eight-hour day. Children under 12 can hand dig for free with a paid adult reservation.
“The feeling of nding something that was crafted by human hands thousands of years ago and hasn’t been seen or touched in millennia is a feeling that is very hard to describe,” says Rob. “I really enjoy sharing this experience and that feeling with others. Seeing someone nd their rst ever artifact is truly ful lling and special.”

A HAPPY LAST CHAPTER
HORSING AROUND WITH SENIOR EQUINES AT THE RETIREMENT HOME FOR HORSES AT MILL CREEK FARM.
WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
The sad truth is that many older horses nd themselves in dire circumstances.
Peter and Mary Gregory were determined to change that by providing a happy last chapter for equines in need. They put actions behind their dreams and founded a nonpro t sanctuary for old, abused and abandoned horses.
Since The Retirement Home for Horses at Mill Creek Farm opened its gates in 1984, the facility in Alachua has been home to 484 equines.
“The mission is to take in horses over 20 years of age that have been seized by law enforcement and equine rescue groups in cruelty and neglect cases,” explains Paul Gregory, who has helped his mother, Mary, run the nonpro t since his father, Peter, passed away in 2014. “We also take in retired law enforcement and military horses.
“We take the horses that can’t be adopted out by rescues because of issues they have,” he adds, noting that they don’t accept horses from private owners.
The farm covers 335 peaceful acres where the horses roam happily in large pastures surrounded by woods and wetlands.
A conservation easement ensures that the land will never be developed. The sanctuary is named for Mill Creek, which runs through the whole farm.
Of the current 142 equine residents, the horses are joined by a few ponies and miniature donkeys, and one “zorse,” a zebra/horse cross rescued from a hoarding case.
“Once a horse comes through our gates, they never work again a day in their lives, and they spend the rest of their lives with us,” says Paul.
About a third of the equine residents are on medication for speci c conditions. A number of the horses are “special needs,” such as the seven who are completely blind.
Caring for this aging herd runs about $3,000
per animal, or roughly $400,000 per year.
“It’s a labor of love,” says Paul. “We couldn’t do what we’re doing without our incredible, dedicated volunteers, team members and donors.”
The sanctuary is open to the public every Saturday from 11am-3pm. Admission is two carrots.
It’s the perfect outing for families, seniors, college kids or for a date. Thanks to the paved trails, it’s accessible by wheelchair and walker.
Be sure to stop by the kiosk where, for a donation, you can take home a souvenir T-shirt and tote bag or handmade gifts like horse finger puppets, hand-painted greeting cards and more.

THE SIPPIN’ SEVEN ALACHUA COUNTY ALE TRAIL IS A FUN WAY TO VISIT ALL OF THE AREA’S BREWERIES—AND WIN FUN PRIZES.
WRITTEN BY MELISSA PETERSON
The brewery game is strong in Alachua County, and thanks to Visit Gainesville, Alachua County, there’s an exciting way to explore these breweries and earn fun swag in the process.
The Sippin’ Seven Alachua County Ale Trail is a free, gami ed, digital brewery passport that allows participants to sign up and check in at Alachua County breweries. Each visit to a brewery earns the participant points that are redeemable for fun, free branded merchandise, including pint glasses, T-shirts and more. The breweries included on the trail are Blackadder Brewing Company, Cypress & Grove Brewing Company, Daft Cow Brewery, First Magnitude Brewing Company, High Springs Brewing Company and Swamp Head Brewery.
“The digital pass is very easy to use,” explains Jessica Hurov, Alachua County Tourism Development manager. “To sign up, all that’s needed is a name, phone number and email address. Once a pro le is created, visitors can scroll through the list of the breweries and check in by clicking on the brewery name. The app uses geolocation fencing to verify that the pass user is currently at the brewery. Once the blue check in button goes grey, a successful check in has occurred. The pass can also be used to review merchandise options, which can be redeemed in person at the Visit Gainesville, Alachua County o ce in downtown Gainesville or at the Daft Cow Brewery. There is also an option to have merchandise shipped if needed.”
The pass launched in November 2022, with the initial launch event taking place at the Downtown Gainesville Festival & Art show. The goal of the campaign is to create awareness of Alachua County’s breweries and craft beer culture. Many of Alachua County’s breweries have won signi cant awards for their products. Prior to the launch of the campaign, there was not an integrated communications campaign for our breweries.
The breweries on the ale trail all o er guests

They o er everything from light and bright beers to dark nitro beers and more.
Daft Cow is Alachua’s rst craft brewery and is located in San Felasco Tech City center. They o er 15 beers that are brewed on-site, along with guest cider and seltzer. Daft Cow consistently has live music, food trucks and fun
