The show will run through December 30, 2021. There will be a gingerbread house decorating with Hansel and Gretel on December 4. The kids’ class will be from 1-3pm, and the adults’-only class is from 3:30-5pm. December 30 will feature Alice’s Tea Party, time TBD. For details, visit nomaocala.com.

cala’s very own Mark Emery was recently the center of attention at the Marion Theatre. On November 9, the filmmaker, musician and photographer was honored by the Ocala Film Foundation and the City of Ocala, which unveiled a bronze plaque commemorating his place in the Ocala Film Foundation’s Walk of Fame. Emery has a special place in our community, getting his start working at the Ross Allen Reptile Institute at the Silver Springs attraction before piloting glass-bottom boats. Mark is now an Emmy award-winning cinematographer and composer with a long list of accomplishments, including his Out of the Mist: A Silver River Story documentary. The event, sponsored by foundation member Angie Lewis, featured live music, cocktails and appetizers followed by the plaque presentation, a screening of the documentary and a Q&A session with Emery. The Walk of Fame also features plaques dedicated to photographer Bruce Mozert, noted musical producer Bruce Swedien, underwater cinematographer Jordan Klein Sr. and now Emery. Take A Holiday Located in Asheville, North Carolina, the Biltmore is the perfect Christmastime getaway.

C

elebrating the holiday season at the Biltmore has a history dating back more than 125 years, when George Vanderbilt hosted the first Christmas with friends and family in his new home—Biltmore House. Every year, guests are invited to enjoy the enchantment of the holidays on the estate, inspired by that first Christmas. Beginning in early November, the entire estate is decorated for the season, but the main house is the true standout. With this year’s décor based on traditional Christmas carols, the Banquet Hall in the home is decorated according to the “12 Days of Christmas” carol. In the Biltmore House alone— not including other areas of the estate—visitors will find 62 hand-decorated Christmas trees, over 14,000 ornaments, 45,000 holidays lights, 250 candles, 1,000 feet of garland and 175 traditional

// B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N poinsettias that are refreshed and replaced throughout the season. Biltmore House really does signify the beauty of the holiday. There are two experiences available when visiting the Biltmore during the holiday season: the Christmas at Biltmore daytime house tour and the Candlelight Christmas Evenings nighttime house tour, with the entire estate open to guests as part of admission to either experience. The daytime celebration runs through January 9. Although the estate is beautiful any time of the day—and especially during the holiday season—we suggest taking in the Candlelight Christmas Evenings experience, if possible, which runs through January 8. At night the house glows with candlelight and firelight, offering a completely different mood

and experience. Step back in time with an experience reminiscent of the Vanderbilt’s first Christmas spent in the Biltmore House in 1895. Musicians are stationed throughout the house performing seasonal favorites, and 250 hand-lit luminaries line the walkway leading to the house as a 55-foot Norway spruce sparkles in the center of the front lawn. If you’re visiting for the evening tour and not staying overnight on the estate, make sure to arrive early to experience all the property has to offer during the season, from holiday menus in the restaurants and the Biltmore Winery to Antler Hill Village and the new Van Gogh Alive digital art exhibition, running through March 5. This multi-sensory experience is an immersion into the remarkable life of Vincent van Gogh through light, color, sound and scent.

Although the Biltmore House is the main attraction, there are plenty of other highlights throughout the estate, especially during the holiday season. And yes, visiting the Biltmore is a vacation for the entire family, with plenty of fun to be had for younger visitors. Biltmore Estate’s European-inspired village, Antler Hill Village, offers appearances from Santa for pictures on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on select weekdays through December 23. As evening falls over Antler Hill Village, holiday lights illuminate trees, quaint buildings, the Winery tunnel and walking paths. Adding to the estate’s many shopping options, a Christmas pop-up shop is stocked with everything needed to celebrate the season. See the beauty of the estate in a fun, familyfriendly setting with a horse-drawn carriage ride. The ride not only provides stunning views of the Biltmore House but also an opportunity to meet the horses. Options include a 30-minute, one-hour or 90-minute tour. Horseback riding is also available through a guided or private trail ride. Kids ages 8 and up are welcome to enjoy horseback riding on the estate. For nature lovers, a visit it to the estate’s gardens is a must-see. Seasonal blooms and an array of tropical plants are a warm and bright holiday stop inside the Conservatory in the Walled Garden and include poinsettias, amaryllis, Christmas cactus, bromeliads, orchids and peace lilies. Specially designed poinsettia trees, bromeliad trees and a fireplace mantle decorated with holiday plants are all perfect for photos. The estate’s winter gardens and 22 miles of peaceful trails are also available for exploring. A visit to the Biltmore Winery is an essential part of a holiday getaway at the estate. Reservations for complimentary tastings of Biltmore’s handcrafted wines must be made on the day of a visit due to limited tasting room capacity. Reservations are not needed to visit the Wine Shop and the Wine Bar. Don’t miss the seasonal favorite commemorative Christmas at Biltmore Red Wine and Christmas at Biltmore White Wine. Wine bundles handpicked especially for gift-giving are also available. There’s so much to do at the Biltmore that many families choose to spend the weekend on-site or, even better, to make the Biltmore their home base for a lengthier visit to Asheville. And can you imagine what it would be like to wake up at Biltmore on Christmas morning! That experience can come true with a stay at one of the estate’s lodging properties. Holiday packages are offered at the luxurious Inn on Biltmore Estate and the cozy Village Hotel, both decked out for the holidays. Historic 14

Fall In Florida A gem of the Florida Panhandle, Blackwater River State Park offers a change of scenery from the palm trees and beaches often associated with the Sunshine State.

F

lorida may be known for its annual greenery and temperate weather, but for some parts of the state, including Santa Rosa County in the Panhandle, fall makes an appearance from time to time. And Blackwater River State Park is one such beautiful oasis that offers visitors a change of color. “Although the 600-acre park’s namesake river provides ample opportunities for swimming, fishing, tubing, canoeing and kayaking, those who visit during the autumn months are often treated to a dazzling display of reds, oranges and yellows,” says Timothy Linafelt, communications manager for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Recreation and Parks. “The Blackwater River’s floodplain swamp contains most of the park’s deciduous trees— those that seasonally shed their leaves. From October through December, visitors will see red maples and sweet gum trees turn red and yellow. And the bald and pond cypress trees 16

352PREVIEW.COM

// B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y that surround the swamps change to a brilliant orange that creates a beautiful contrast while reflecting on the dark water of the river and oxbow lakes.” Fall and winter in Florida may just be the best time to get out on the water and enjoy a day of paddling or kayaking. Blackwater Canoe Rental offers river trip services that include kayak, canoe and tube rentals. Visitors can choose the length of their adventure and take advantage of any of the 30 sandy beaches that span the river. It may be called Blackwater River, but don’t let that name mislead you. The river’s water is actually transparent and usually a golden-brown color. “Paddlers will enjoy the way the autumn colors blend while they navigate the river’s peaceful bends, and hikers will see changing wild grapes provide natural decoration to their trees,” adds Timothy. The park’s hiking trail system crosses through native forests, creeks and wetlands and offers an abundance of wildlife, including white-tailed deer,

gopher tortoises, birds, wild turkeys and more. For the day tripper, the 1.75-mile Chain of Lakes Nature Trail loop starts off in a floodplain forest and makes its way to a sandhill forest. Of course, if you miss the small window of fall foliage, Timothy says not to worry. “The park’s scenery is no less captivating during the winter,” he says. “Flowers have gone to seed, grasses are washed in angled sunlight, bracken ferns are a beautiful yellow-brown and wildlife, such as deer, river otters and pileated woodpeckers, are often about.” Blackwater River State Park originally opened to the public in 1968 and spanned 360 acres. Today the park stretches over 600 acres and provides ample recreational opportunities both on and off the water. Visit flstateparks.org for upcoming events and tours. THE BORDER FLAVORS BECKON Cantina Tex-Mex & Tequila Bar opens in Ocala.

W

hen Cantina Tex-Mex & Tequila Bar opened for business the second week of November, it brought a totally unique vibe to Ocala’s downtown scene. Located in the old Bank of America building on the corner across from Harry’s, Cantina is a multi-story restaurant. Thanks to the stunning design elements and 40-foot ceilings, patrons have the magical sense of dining under the stars in an enchanting outdoor Mexican street market. Ocala-born and -raised Bryan Caracciolo of Brick City Hospitality Group was involved both in the conceptual and building aspect of Cantina—and numerous other downtown establishments. Time spent in Tulum, Mexico, strongly influenced Caracciolo’s design of the establishment. Magnificent murals, plenty of natural wood, including the all live edge bar, handmade tables and wicker chairs combine with a vibrant atmosphere that includes live entertainment and mariachi music. Cantina is open seven days a week, serving lunch and dinner and Sunday brunch. Beyond the regular dining areas, there are two private rooms for special events and parties and outdoor seating, as well. Off-site catering is also available. Best described as “fancy casual,” the restaurant features a high-end menu unlike anything else in Ocala, which is precisely what Caracciolo was aiming for. “We designed the menu with a major spin on Mexican, Latin and Tex-Mex,” says Caracciolo. Chef Eric, a native of Barranquilla, Colombia, has been honing his culinary skills in the United States since 1997. The well-traveled chef has worked in Mexico and throughout Florida. Chef Eric showcases his expertise in Cantina’s kitchen with tantalizingly authentic dishes that encompass beef, pork, chicken and

seafood. Joining the expected tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas and nachos are a creative variety of appetizers, main dishes and more. The menu even features a number of gluten-free and Keto dishes. The ingenuity doesn’t end with lunch and dinner. Patrons in Cantina’s bar can choose from 80-plus different kinds of tequila alone. Bar offerings range from $2 a drink options to specialty bottles upwards of $3,000 to $5,000 apiece. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 2-6pm. Margarita Mondays kick every week off with $2 margaritas. Taco Tuesdays with $2 tacos and $2 beers make it worth marking your calendar. Wednesday highlights include chef specials. Sunday brunch from 10am to 4pm is sure to make the Cantina a favorite spot with $15 endless mimosas, a bloody mary bar and special brunch menu. Although doors opened in November, the restaurant’s grand opening is set for the first week of December.

Just in time for the holidays, Cantina is offering a Christmas gift card special. Buy $100 in gift cards and get a $30 gift card free. Ring in 2022 with a celebratory five-course New Year’s Eve dinner. Check Cantina’s website for details and to make reservations.

I just get so tickled by all the cutters.” Janine is a perfectionist who loves to bake, so it’s no surprise that she uses her own recipe, a cross between a sugar and shortbread cookie. She also makes her icings and colors them from scratch. “Tommy does the footwork,” says Janine. “He does the grocery runs, packages cookies and picks up the slack. He’s also the resident taste tester.” And surely he doesn’t mind that the house always smells likes fresh-baked cookies.

SWEET TREATS As retired Miami police officers, Janine Burns and her husband, Tommy, were looking for a more relaxed lifestyle, so the couple made the move from South Florida to Inverness in 2002. “I retired in 2001 from my job, and it didn’t take long to decide I was probably too young to retire,” laughs Janine. “I was looking for something to do, so I picked up cake decorating as a hobby. Eventually I made my way to cookies and fell in love with them.” Elite Sweets was born. Janine’s beautiful cookie creations are tiny works of art, each element added right down to the smallest detail. It really doesn’t matter what theme you ask Janine for—she can do it. “I have an entire closet full of cookie cutters,” she says. “And if I don’t have something you’re looking for, which is probably 28

Janine’s hobby quickly turned into a successful full-time business, and these days she spends no less than 10 hours a day in the kitchen. Why does she do it? “Honestly, seeing the joy on people’s faces when they see their cookies is all the reason I need,” she says. “I love to be able to touch someone’s life in a special way. This is my passion; I know I am supposed to be doing this.” Janine’s cookies are available for pick up or can be shipped, but she acknowledges that she’s exceptionally busy these days, especially around the holidays. Advance notice for orders is a must, and she is typically booked out six to eight weeks. From bachelorette parties and kids’ graduations to sports events and birthdays, her creations are sure to cause a stir—and a smile. Elite Sweets // Find them on Instagram and Facebook

BERRIES AND BEYOND While on maternity leave during Covid, Kourtney Keller found herself with a bit of free time on her hands.

“Everyone was staying home and not doing much,” Kourtney says. “I began watching videos online and started watching videos of dipping strawberries.” Kourtney decided to give it a shot and learned she had a knack for making the sweet dessert. “I starting making arrangements for family and friends, and they encouraged me to start selling them,” she says. After practicing and refining her craft, Berry Babes was born. Kourtney recently celebrated her company’s first anniversary. Specializing in chocolate dipped treats, Berry Babes also offers a tasty selection of cake pops, cakecicles (think cake pops, but bigger!), cocoa bombs, breakable chocolate hearts, brownie bites and more. “I try to keep everything fun and unique,” says Kourtney. “Everything can be customized and personalized as well, from colors and sports teams to themes and music. It’s a great gift if you’re trying to win someone over with creativeness.” Berry Babes’ gift boxes come in four-packs on up, and Kourtney says they are also capable of providing sweets and treats for large parties, from business gatherings to weddings to private events. “We can put together whatever you choose,” she says. “A whole tray of chocolate dipped strawberries or a variety selection.” Another popular selection from Berry Babes is the churro cheesecake. Kourtney takes the reigns in the kitchen, making all the sweets from scratch on her own, but she is very active in the community with help from her husband, Jesse. The duo spends every other Saturday at the Ocala Downtown Market and also attend other fundraisers and events. Berry Babes // Find them on Instagram and Facebook

PEANUT PERFECTION Nothing says the South quite like boiled peanuts. And Jen Lowry has perfected the art of boiling (and roasting, for that matter) peanuts. A sampling of what her Great Southern Peanut Company has to offer is all the proof you’ll need. What started as a hobby, supplying friends and family with tasty, boiled treats, has turned into a career for this busy college student. Then, with the unexpected passing of her father, it took another turn. “My dad passed away from cancer in June,” says Jen. “We were completely blindsided by the diagnosis. I’ve decided to make the Great Southern Peanut Company a tribute to him. My main goal is to raise as much money as possible to help support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.” A portion of her sales are donated to the Society. Jen does all the work herself, spending hours at a time roasting and boiling her peanuts to perfection. She says she has taken a traditional Southern treat and put a unique twist on it. She offers plain salted nuts, of course, but why not try the salty citrus or chili lime craft boiled peanuts? Those are Jen’s favorite flavors so far. Other flavors to try include jalapeno ranch (her no. 1 seller), salty dill, cajun bbq, lemon pepper

and collard greens. Customers can order right on Jen’s website, and she will hand deliver her products throughout Ocala. Shipping is available as well. Her boiled peanuts come served up on a platter, and the roasted are available in six-pack snack packs. Of course, a six-pack of bottled

Coke is included with the roasted peanuts. Bulk ordering is also available for parties, group meetings, holidays and more. These salty treats also make the perfect gift. Great Southern Peanut Company // greatsouthernpeanut.com

here’s something to be said for quality. At James Two Brothers Distillery the James family has worked for nearly a decade to create top-notch spirits, taking their time to ensure the process is done correctly. Paul James’ brother, Timothy, originally made craft beer. That was a success, so spirits were next. A small snafu caused the pair to change direction, though, and James Two Brothers Distillery was eventually born. “Making craft beer at home is not a felony, but it turns out making spirits is,” laughs Paul. “Getting a bit of a reprimand in your 20s is one thing, but it’s another in your 60s. For Paul, who retired from the architecture business, making spirits is work he enjoys with his family. “I enjoy it all,” he says. “Mostly the nuts and bolts. It’s like baking a cake. You go in the kitchen and get all the ingredients together. If you put it together properly and do it right, it’s a nice cake and everyone likes it.” Paul is proud of the distilleries’ finished products, and he knows his brother would be, too.
