BRINGING THE FUN
OCALA BAND GLIZZY GILLESPIE TALKS MUSIC INSPIRATION AND SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS. WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHED BY JESSE JAMESIf you haven’t visited downtown Ocala recently, you might be surprised to know that there is more happening than ever before—more art, more food, more culture and de nitely more music. In fact, you would be hard pressed to visit and not come across exceptional live music from a range of local bands. One of those bands is Glizzy Gillespie.
The band consists of Taylor Schoenborn and Kyle Corley, who are both Ocala natives with a penchant for eccentricity. Together, the duo began making music after discovering their shared appreciation for certain types of music. Since then, they have been putting together impressive shows around the state, including at their home base, Mutiny, in downtown Ocala.
Music has been a lifelong passion for both Taylor and Kyle. Taylor’s love of music began at an early age.
“My dad and uncle both play guitar and showed me some chords and a scale when I was 8,” Taylor says. “I took o from there and have been teaching myself how to play instruments since. I’ve also had a lifelong a nity for music. My rst experience of live music was seeing Weird Al from the third row when I was 6, so it all really started there.”
Taylor’s inspiration for music started with the classics before being introduced to other genres.
“I grew up listening to your general classics,” says Taylor. “I got to see The Beach Boys when I was a kid in the mid-90s when they came to Silver Springs and was blown away. After that, my older brother, Timm, and my cousin, Morgan, showed me some awesome punk and ska music around the fourth grade, and from there, I was out looking for all di erent kinds of music.”
For Kyle, inspiration came from a completely di erent source.
“To be completely honest, most of my core musical in uences come from Good Burger,” he says. “So much George Clinton in one lm is hugely impactful on a 4 year old, you know.” Kyle also says that he’s inspired by many ‘60s and ‘70s psychedelic, surf and garage bands.
As for the sounds of Glizzy Gillespie, the fellas describe the sound as “swampy funky folk punk,” “Central Florida boogie woogie,” “groove twang” and simply “hot dog music.”
“I usually just say we play fun music,” Kyle says.
The duo has been putting together an array of shows throughout the state over the past few months, especially at Mutiny in Ocala. In addition to bartending at Mutiny, Taylor also hosts an artist showcase on the last Sunday of each month.
“We started it as a curated open mic, and it wasn’t long before I realized just how much our local music scene needs nights like this,”
Taylor says. “A place to come out and really showcase what you’ve been working on. It’s a relaxed environment, and the people who attend are supportive.”
Musicians bring their latest songs to perform, while local artists show o their recent work, sell prints and other items. Due to the holiday season, there will not be an artist showcase in December, so be on the lookout for January’s showcase to support local talent.
Recently, the duo has taken their sound on the road. In addition to Ocala, Glizzy Gillespie has played shows in St. Augustine and Tampa. Stay up to date on concerts and the artist showcase at Mutiny by following the band on Instagram, and don’t forget to check out Glizzy’s latest EP, Metchup & Kustard, available on your favorite streaming platform.

SAYING THANKS
OCALA ELECTRIC UTILITY HOSTS ITS CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY.
RONALD W. WETHERINGTON, SOCIAL EDITORIt was fun, it was free and the citizens came out in droves for a good time. Recently, on a pictureperfect evening at downtown Ocala’s Citizens’ Circle, Ocala Electric Utility said a big thank you to its customers.
“Ocala Electric Utility is dedicated to the community we serve,” said Doug Peebles, director of electric utilities with the City of Ocala. “Public Power Week, along with our annual Customer Appreciation Day, helps shed a light on OEU’s e orts as Ocala and Marion County’s hometown public power provider. These events are a sincere thank you to our customers that support us throughout the year.”
OEU provided food from the Mojo Grill and Catering Company on a rst-come, rst-served basis. The Customer Appreciation Day included entertainment by Major Sound Productions. Familyfriendly activities included Face Painting Tonya, Red Dog Balloons and Kona Ice. Bucket rides in a utility truck were a crowd favorite. Long lines formed as OEU customers also had the opportunity to spin the wheel to win credit vouchers with randomly assigned money values to use toward the electric portion of their bills.
OEU provides city and county customers with safe, reliable and a ordable power. Their service area is 160 square miles, and they maintain over 1,200 miles of power lines with over 40,000 power poles. In addition, there are 21 substations within their service territory, servicing over 54,000 homes and businesses. Rain or shine, they serve customers 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Energy conservation is a very popular topic these days, and if your group, business, school or organization needs a guest speaker, contact Tammy Ho , the public education and outreach coordinator. She can be reached at tho @ocala .org. Additionally, OEU’s Facebook page, Twitter feed and blog keep customers up to date on happenings.

A NEW BEGINNING
CELEBRATE
THE NEW YEAR WITH OCALA MAIN STREET AND SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE DOWNTOWN VENUES.
WRITTEN BY MELISSA PETERSONTired of sitting at home on New Year’s Eve? Looking for a fun event that’s suitable for the entire family? Ocala Main Street introduces Ocala First Night, a brand-new New Year’s Eve celebration that not only provides entertainment to help ring in the new year but also supports downtown businesses.
“Ocala First Night is the brain child of our city manager, Pete Lee,” says Jessica Fieldhouse, executive director for Ocala Main Street. “He and I sat down about a year ago and discussed potential large events that could be brought to our community, and First Night was one that got our organization very excited. Ocala does not have an organized New Year’s event, and there is so much potential revenue that should be supporting our local businesses that goes out of town during this annual holiday. There are other major cities across the country that host
First Night events, and we hope Ocala’s will stand up to those being held in large tourist destinations, such as Pittsburgh and Boston, over the next several years.”
First Night attendees will purchase a ticket and receive an event button that grants access to over 10 experiences throughout midtown and downtown Ocala between 5pm and midnight. And even better, tickets are just $15 per person for all events and venues, and children under 5 get in free.
The events that take place in Tuscawilla Park between 5-8pm cater to Ocala’s younger residents with a family NYE celebration at 8pm at the Jenkin’s Amphitheatre. The first half of the program will also feature activities at the Discovery Center and access to the Magnolia Art Xchange gallery. All additional activities, such as facepainting and bounce houses, will be part of the event area and
only accessible to those with an event button. The second half of the event will take place in downtown Ocala, at Citizens’ Circle, the square, IHMC, Marion Theatre and the Brick City Center for the Arts courtyard. These locations will feature an amazing live band, magic show, comedy, stilt walker, caricature artist and dance performances throughout the evening.
“Think Disney,” says Jessica. “Each venue will run their shows and performances on a 45-minute schedule, so our attendees can create their own experience based on their preferences. Our Samba dancers, magician and comedian will perform their sets three separate times in their respective locations, allowing attendees to ideally see all three shows. Citizens’ Circle will also host a stilt walker and caricature artist, which is the souvenir for the guests. We want people to
patron our downtown businesses as well, so grab a drink or dinner at your favorite restaurant or bar and see a show. Then grab dessert and see the next! Everything will conclude at 11:30pm to motivate everyone to head to the square where we will countdown into the new year.”
One concern for parents during New Year’s Eve is whether an event will provide a safe and family-friendly atmosphere. Thankfully, all the activities were selected to ensure that everything is kid friendly.
“We decided to o er a family celebration at 8pm so families with littles could still enjoy the holiday without having to keep the kids out until midnight,” says Jessica. “The second half is de nitely geared more toward adults and families with older children, though the dancers and comedian all fall into the PG and PG-13 categories. We have decided to not shut down
the roads or allow for open container, so while the second half is in the heart of our downtown nightlife, families can feel secure inside the gated area of Citizens’ Circle, the Marion Theatre or the IHMC building. Since the City of Ocala is a partner of this event, it will also be heavily sta ed by the Ocala Police Department.”
At 11:30pm all attendees will gather at the square for the countdown to 2023. Jessica says that they will definitely ring in the new year with pyrotechnics—hopefully fireworks, if approved—at the stroke of midnight, and light-up items will be for sale on the square for those wanting something that glows.
Ocala Main Street’s focus is to revitalize downtown Ocala, to promote events that create a sense of place and community, and to drive economic vitality for Ocala’s small businesses. Ocala First Night is the perfect event to fulfill all those goals.
“Our venues, especially the City of Ocala’s property, allow us to showcase our beautiful historic district and what makes Ocala so special,” Jessica says. “We hope that in upcoming years we can double the amount of activities and venues to allow more people to experience our beautiful spaces and businesses. Josiyah Martin said, ‘The magic of new beginnings is truly the most powerful of them all,’ and what is more meaningful than being able to come together and celebrate as a community? We are grateful for the opportunity to host this holiday event and keep our residents in Ocala and support our businesses and our local economy.”

Assuming you’re looking for that Hallmark Channel, small town getaway this holiday season, you’ll nd plenty of lodging options in the towns of Gastonia or Belmont, which are conveniently located close to major highways and include everything from national brand hotels and historic boutique inns to bed and breakfasts and Airbnb homes. Of course, if you’re looking for a more bigcity vacation, Charlotte has every accommodation option you can imagine.
A ectionately known as Christmas County, the holiday season is a magical time in Gaston County, showcasing holiday lights and festivals, parades, skating, sledding and more. Through December, visitors to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden can stroll through “a mile of a million lights” at the Holidays at the Garden event. Along the journey, discover enchanting fairy villages, visit with Santa, listen to live holiday
music, roast marshmallows and sip a warm beverage. Another fun wintertime activity is The Chutes at Crowders Springs, which features a snowless tubing attraction—it’s just like snow tubing, without the fake snow.
The nonpro t Whitewater Center is the largest manmade whitewater course in the world, and when the weather cools down, it becomes a 1,300-acre winter playground. An ice trail is open for skating with an on-ice Airstream serving hot
and cold beverages. The 24,000-square-foot area o ers unique skating spaces split into four distinct skating areas, including two ice trails and two free-skate zones. The center also o ers ziplining, hiking and a ropes course, complete with cargo nets, obstacles, suspended platforms and rope bridges.
Even in the winter, the area has mild daytime temperatures, which means its perfect for exploring the great outdoors. Natural spaces found in state, county and city parks are perfect for an easy stroll or a strenuous hike, and some are great for jogging and biking as well. Crowders Mountain State Park boasts two mountain peaks that o er magni cent views, and trails in the park o er challenging hikes and towering cli s—and even the opportunity to traverse two states through the Ridgeline Trail. Other outdoor recreation includes birdwatching,

paddling, shing, rock climbing and bouldering.
A wintertime visit to Gaston County, though, wouldn’t be complete without an evening visit to McAdenville, also known as Christmas Town USA. McAdenville and its approximately 900 residents attracts approximately 600,000 visitors each Christmas to see the town all decked out in holiday cheer. Visitors can drive the half-mile route, which is free of charge, or walk through the small town to take in the more than 375 trees strung with glowing lights, complete with holiday music.
According to the Gaston County Tourism Development website, the annual Christmas Town holiday tradition began in 1956 when the McAdenville Men’s Club along with Mr. W. J. Pharr conceived the idea of using red, white and green lights to decorate the trees around the McAdenville Community Center.
Lifelong resident of McAdenville, Steve Rankin, who is on the Christmas Town Committee, says that during the month of December all the trees in the common areas in town are decorated with lights, along with practically every home within the town. While many visitors drive through the area to see the lights, Steve recommends walking.
“If you ride through, you will miss about 75 percent of our decorated homes,” he says. “All foot tra c is more than welcome.”
During the month, Church and Academy— two dead-end streets in town—are closed to cars but open to pedestrians, which means you will miss these areas when driving through McAdenville. If you do plan to park and walk, there are four free parking areas in town: behind the McAdenville Baptist Church/CaroMont Family Medicine, behind the small business
area on Poplar Street, beside the lake in the heart of Christmas Town USA and next to the McAdenville Elementary School.
A variety of events and festivities surround Christmas Town USA, and although at this point, you’ve missed the Tree Lighting Ceremony, when a local child pulls the switch to light the town, this year’s Yule Log Parade takes place December 15. In a tradition that began in 1949, during the event, townspeople and visitors meet in downtown McAdenville to join in the parade to pull the yule log through town to the Memorial Yule Log Fireplace where it is placed upon the re.
Other activities to enjoy while visiting include simply listening to the sounds of the season as traditional carillon bells play Christmas carols at the Pharr Family YMCA; basking in the season’s splendor at the town’s lake, which is surrounded by more than 30 decorated trees and a 75-foot fountain; visiting the historic bell tower that will be decorated for the season; or taking in the vintage Christmas displays, including Old Man Winter, Santa and his reindeer, carolers and a nativity scene within the historic downtown.
However you choose to unwind this season, we’re sure that visiting North Carolina’s “Christmas County” will be the tinsel on your holiday getaway. Make sure to check out gogasstonnc.org for a full list of holiday activities in Gaston County and charlottesgotalot.com for fun things to do in in Charlotte.

CLYDEsDALES
Make t a eason to emember i e Grandview Clydesdales.
Ocala/Marion Country has proudly carried the title of Horse Capital of the World since 2007. Among the many equine breeds contributing to this recognition are some of the grandest horses one could ever hope to meet.
Fortunately for all of us, Shannon and Karen Cobbs of Grandview Clydesdale Farm have made it possible to experience these amazing horses up close and personal.
Long-time breeders and competitors, the Cobbs have owned one of the world’s largest and most award-winning Clydesdale farms for decades. They also host Florida’s biggest draft horse shows every February, the Grandview Invitational and Grandview World Nights.
The Cobbs family traces their Scottish lineage back to 1240, so it’s tting that their life is dedicated to that country’s most well-known horse. Honoring their heritage, Shannon and Karen are third generation Clydesdale breeders and owners.
A Scottish Breed Native to Scotland, the Clydesdale breed was developed there as a work horse in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Clydesdales were rst introduced to Canada by Scottish settlers and came to the United States in the late 1880s.
Many people equate this popular draft breed with Budweiser, as the company has successfully used Clydesdale hitches to market their product for many years.
“Not all Clydesdales are bay with blazes and four white legs,” notes Karen. “Bay is dominant, but they come in all colors. Standing as high as 19 hands tall and weighing over 2,000 pounds, these are some of the biggest horses you’ll see.”
Whatever their coloring, Clydesdales are recognized by their massive size, feathering on their lower legs, high-stepping gait and gentle, kind personalities.
Farm Tours
Three days a week Grandview Clydesdale Farm near Ocala o ers “The Clydesdale Experience” tours, giving visitors a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience these impressive horses in person.
Farm tours are o ered every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10am and 6pm, and these guided tours last from 1.5 to 2 hours.
Participants get to experience day-to-day farm operations and learn about horse care, breeding and training. A highlight of every tour is the opportunity to pet and take photos with the horses.
“You can see Clydesdales at di erent places, but at our farm you’re going to see national and
world champions,” says Karen, noting that the farm is home to 36 world champions.
Tours are handicap friendly and elderly friendly.
“We keep walking to a minimum with everything in close proximity and seating is provided,” says Karen. “If you’re in a walker or wheelchair, you can successfully do the tour. Our oldest tour attendee to date was 98, and he loved it!”
Farm tours are o ered year-round, but the Christmas tours are extra special and run from
November 8 through January 7 at 6pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
These tours are the perfect activity solution if you have friends or family coming to visit during the holidays.
“There are lots of lights, decorations and music; it’s really magical and completely di erent from the standard tour,” says Karen, noting that a braiding and harnessing demonstration is also part of the Christmas tour.
“This is our third year doing the Christmas tours,” she says. “They really took o last year.”
Tickets for both the regular farm tours and Christmas tours must be booked online to reserve your spot. Clydesdale Experience farm tours are $48 per person. Christmas tours are $55 per person. Children under 2 are free.
Private group pricing is available, so call the farm directly if you have 30 or more people wanting to come for a tour.
Grandview Invitational
As enjoyable as the Christmas tours are, the fun doesn’t end after the holidays. If you want to see the horses “all dressed up” and competing, make plans to attend one of the early February events.
The show season kicks into high gear with the 5th annual Grandview Invitational on February 3 through 5 at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala.
“This is the highest level of draft horse competition,” says Karen. “We bring the best hitches from North America down to Florida.”
A huge crowd pleaser, the show features some of the best horses and drivers in the world. Up to 96 draft horses will be in the ring at one time exhibiting their skills and beauty in the popular hitch classes, all performed to music.
Spectator seats are under cover, and classes commence at 12 noon each day. Tickets start at $20.
Grandview World Nights
Continue the unforgettable draft horse show experience by attending Grandview World Nights at World Equestrian Center Ocala on February 9 through 11. Competition starts at 4pm daily.
“It’s all done to music and very fast paced! People don’t want to leave their seats,” says Karen, noting that you don’t have to be a “horse person” to attend and have a fabulous time.
At this event, you’ll cheer on the only 8-horse hitch competition in the state of Florida. Plus, Saturday night is a fun social event, with spectators dressing in formal attire. Many also attend the VIP World of Red Valentine’s Day party following the show.
Grandview World Nights features stadium seating in a climate-controlled indoor arena. Book your own seats when you purchase tickets online. When you buy a VIP ticket, the after party on Saturday evening is included.
Less Stuff, More Magic
Why not make this a Christmas to remember by celebrating magical experiences together?
Gift certi cates for tour tickets or show tickets will give your friends and family memories they will never forget, especially if you accompany them.
“Depending on the ticket level, these can be stocking stu ers or full- edged big gifts,” says Karen.

RELAX & UNWIND
THERE IS NO DENYING THAT THE HOLIDAYS ARE A BUSY TIME FOR MANY. GATHERINGS, SHOPPING, DECORATING, EVENTS AND MORE FILL OUR CALENDARS. SOMETIMES, THE SMALL THINGS, LIKE COOKING DINNER, CAN FALL BY THE WAYSIDE. THANKFULLY, UNWIND IS READY TO HELP.
WRITTEN BY KARIN FABRY-CUSHENBERY“I
know how hectic the holidays can be, especially when you are the one cooking,” Chelsea Simpkins says. “It takes days and sometimes even weeks to plan, get all the shopping done, prepare a timeline… it gets stressful. While you’re taking care of that, let us take a few nights of dinner prep o your hands.”
Chelsea may be the o cial owner of Unwind, a catering and meal delivery service here in Ocala, but she’s quick to point out that the success of Unwind is a group e ort.
“I have so many partners,” she says. “Brooke, [my] best friend, is essential. She is the queen of throwing things together in the kitchen and creating some of the best meals I’ve ever had. She is also my sounding board, and I run everything by her. My partner, Mike, keeps me company while I cook and helps with clean up, and my girls are the best taste testers—5 year olds will be brutally honest! I have a lot of people in my corner that make this possible.”
So how can Unwind help you, well, unwind? Each Monday, Unwind posts a new menu to their website, unwindocala.com. Customers choose from a list of dinners and desserts, plus addon items like fresh bread or extra protein. The dinner options serve two to three people as is, but shoppers can modify the quantities to feed additional people.
“We do the shopping, the planning and the prep work, then deliver your order straight to your door on Sundays,” says Chelsea. “We try to keep it as convenient as possible, so there are usually only a few short steps before your home cooked meal is ready to enjoy.”
Chelsea says that although the menu changes each Monday, there are some favorites that appear regularly on the list of options, including Unwind’s al pastor tacos and enchiladas.
“We ll up a few homemade corn tortillas with ground beef simmered in an al pastor sauce with fresh pineapple and chipotles for a little sweet and spicy, then top that with diced red onion, cilantro and a lime sour cream,” Chelsea says. “Another
favorite is our basil pistachio pesto pasta.”
“I love to cook for people,” says Chelsea. “Birthday parties, random get togethers, holidays, I love to be the one to cook. It makes me happy making other people happy through my food. I like it all—writing the grocery list, doing the shopping, I love having my girls in the kitchen with me even though that makes it a little extra hectic, but most of all I just love to see people happy. It’s de nitely the customer service side of me.”
Whether it’s a weekday dinner for two or a large-scale gathering, Chelsea challenges herself to make each meal her best meal. Let her take the reins this holiday season, allowing you and your family to relax and unwind.
