The Future Of Farming While some kids are content to play video games or watch YouTube in their free time, others are busy caring for animals, creating record books, contacting buyers and managing finances. These children have spent the last several months preparing for perhaps their biggest event of the year, the Southeastern Youth Fair, and they are most certainly the future of Marion County’s agriculture industry. // B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y
A
n event thatʼs eight decades strong, the SEYF is about far more than farm animals and fun. Itʼs about instilling a respect for and teaching our youth about production agriculture. Events are open to kids between the ages of 8 and 18, and a special Watch Me Grow category is offered for some events for kids ages 5-7. “Our youngest kids may not be actually competing, but itʼs a way for them to gain experience and exposure for when they are ready to compete,” says Executive Director Sara LeFils. “The Southeastern Youth Fair is truly an opportunity to see our youth shine. Itʼs such an encouraging and uplifting event for all involved.” With 2,200 exhibits, 900 exhibitors, 372 chickens, 265 hogs, 235 rabbits and countless more horses, lambs, heifers and dogs, itʼs clear the fairʼs popularity is as strong as ever. “When you have something thatʼs truly high quality, it stands the test of time,” says LeFils. “One of my greatest joys is observing the grandparents and parents showing, and now their children and grandchildren are showing. Itʼs a testament to the parentsʼ support and leadership. The fair has affected everyone in such a positive way that they want to continue on with the tradition. It gets in your blood.” And yes, the root of this fair is education, but donʼt let that fool you—thereʼs a whole lot of fun to be had, too. The Market Animal shows afford the kids the opportunity to raise and care for their animals, preparing them for a market sale. The animals must be properly groomed and clipped, and nutrition

and the animalʼs overall health are key. Each exhibitor in the market category, which includes steer, goat, lamb and swine, must also keep a detailed record book of their interactions with the animal. Other animal shows include chickens, horses, rabbits and much more. New this year is the Equestrians with Disabilities category. The dog show allows kids and their furry friends to work together toward a common goal. The agility course will run the dogs and their handlers through a challenging obstacle course. The Dog Rally is about obedience and the relationship between the dog and its handler. The dog stays in the heel position throughout the course with its handler at its side. A Dog Obedience category teaches participants about the importance and benefits of proper training, grooming, sportsmanship, responsibility and the dogʼs overall health and well-being. For those kids more inclined in the arts, the home arts building houses a variety of competition opportunities that allow local kids to put their creativity to the test. From woodworking and sewing to home furnishings and needlework, the talent on display is impressive and competitive. The most encouraging aspect is that all of the work on display has been built or created by local children. As a nod to Ocalaʼs former Horse Fever horses, the Animal Fever competition encourages kids to take a plain ceramic animal and make it his or her own. In the past, paints, florals, fabric and rhinestones have been used to embellish and decorate their creations, which have ranged from owls and alligators to cows and roosters. This yearʼs Animal Fever ceramic is a mustang, and the Watch Me Grow gang will create a turkey. Also on display in the Home Arts Building are the horticulture and photography displays. If exploring the fair has caused you to work up an appetite, the kids have you covered there as well. The Dave Baillie BBQ Contest includes classes in beef, pork, poultry and

other meats. Each contestant is given two and a half hours to prep and prepare their finished entrée, and they are judged on appearance, cleanliness, barbecuing skill, control of the fire, sanitation, quality of their dish and their recipe. New this year is the hot dog contest for the Watch Me Grow set. “Our young competitors will grill a hot dog with the help of an adult,” says LeFils. “They will also choose their toppings to make it their own.” We predict youʼre looking at quite a few future grill masters here. “It doesnʼt matter what youʼre interested in,” says LeFils. “There is something for everyone at the Southeastern Youth Fair. This is a hands-on activity for our exhibitors where for months the kids worked on a project, and this is the culmination of that project. Itʼs so important to expose our youth to where our food and clothes come from—itʼs all from agriculture. Itʼs something we hope to stress to our visitors, adults and children alike, in an educational, fun setting.” Southeastern Youth Fair // February 21-29, 2020 // Southeastern Livestock Pavilion, Ocala // Visit seyfair.com for a detailed calendar of events and a complete rundown of activities

INTERACTIVE ART What do you get when you bring live painting, music, singing and dancing all to one stage? One “ARTrageous” show. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N
W
hat started with a troupe of street performers in Vancouver doing clowning and juggling has evolved into a nationally known and critically acclaimed interactive show performed more than 3,000 times all around the world. An event for the entire family, ARTrageous is a collection of the many forms of entertainment and performances the group has perfected throughout their years together in the entertainment industry. The show comes to Ocalaʼs Reilly Arts Center on February 10. ARTrageous brings together 12 artists, singers, dancers and musicians for a highenergy performance combining fine art, live music, singing and dancing, and humor. Itʼs a frenzy of movement and color, as artists create

giant works of art right before the audienceʼs eyes. And one of the most important things to know before you go is that no two shows are identical. Audience interaction is the heart of ARTrageous, and the audience dictates the vibe and direction of the performance. What does that mean? Be prepared to sing and dance! “We feel that it is [the audienceʼs] show, and they can take it where ever they want with their involvement,” says Lauri Francis, one of the artists with ARTrageous. “We do all sorts of things with the audience—they are part of the creation process.” And the fun doesnʼt end with the close of the show. At the end of the performance, the audience is invited on stage to view the artworks that are created during the presentation and
enjoy a unique view of the show, meet the troupe and walk through a gallery of live art. And if you really want to get in on the action, youʼll want to visit whatʼs known as the “Splatter Station.” “The audience can visit our one-of-akind Splatter Station, where they can bring a T-shirt or other item to get splattered ARTrageous style by one of our artists,” says Lauri. “We will also be giving away a painting that will be created on stage during the performance to a lucky audience member. We love that audience members usually leave feeling uplifted and excited to bring the arts back into their lives.” ARTrageous at the Reilly Arts Center, Ocala // February 10, 7:30pm // reillyartscenter.com

High-Flying Fun Nothing says romance quite like a hot air balloon. How about nearly two dozen of them? ozens of balloons will be on display throughout this two-day event, and tethered balloon rides are perfect for the adventurous couple. “The Villages Polo Club is very excited to host its second annual The Villages Balloon Festival here on property,” says Event Manager Tori Hilding. “We have spent a lot of time revamping the event for the attendees to enjoy. We added a winter theme to the event so everyone can do more than just watch and wait for the balloons to fly or glow.” The fun begins Friday, February 7 with a walk-through balloon event and pilot meet and greet. A full lineup of live entertainment will also perform Friday afternoon and into the evening, including Gilly and the Girl, Bay Kings Band, Nichole Equerme and the Cirque Bishop Acrobats and Jugglers. 16

When hunger sets in, check out the Fly Me to the Food vendors. A variety of barbecue, wraps, burgers and dogs, tacos and more will be available. If shopping is your game, peruse the great vendors and retail merchants to take home the perfect souvenir. There will also be several drink locations. The main bar in the pavilion area will feature bartenders from Katie Belleʼs mixing up your favorite cocktails, and the Bottomʼs Up Boulevard is the festivalʼs signature beer garden offering a selection of beer and wine to guests. Friday or Saturday afternoon take in the antique car show. In the evening you may want to catch a game of twilight polo, beginning at 6pm both days. Starting at 6:30pm the balloon glow will light up the night sky. Donʼt forget to bring your camera for some great photo ops.
As the festival winds down for the night, make your way over to one of The Villages town squares for some live music, dancing and a cocktail. Pull up a rocking chair to people watch, or enjoy the evening with a leisurely stroll through the streets. Keep your wristband and come back bright and early Sunday morning for the mass balloon ascension to bid farewell to the festival. “We are looking forward to everyone seeing all 21 balloons we have to offer during the event,” says Tori. “We also want everyone to make sure they stop to take their picture in our 12-foot snow globe!” The Villages Balloon Festival // The Villages Polo Club // February 7-8 // thevillagesballoonfestival.com

Building Dreams
The 7th Annual Habitat Ocala Strawberry Festival is Habitat for Humanity of Marion Countyʼs signature fundraising event and helps to bring awareness about the organization to the community and to raise funds to build an affordable home for a low-income family. Offering free admission, the event is one of Marion Countyʼs largest celebrations and offers families a fun day out while supporting a worthy cause. Proceeds from the festival are used toward the construction of a Habitat house, lovingly called the Strawberry House. All sponsors of the festival also become sponsors of the Strawberry House—an extra benefit to sponsoring the event. Attendees can expect a full day of strawberry goodness, including strawberry flats for sale that come directly from Plant City and strawberry food products, such as strawberry shortcake and chocolatecovered strawberries, as well as other festival fun. Joanne Black,

Other new highlights include the first-ever Deep Fried Strawberry Pie On A Stick Relay, Peacheyʼs Youth Pretzel Making Clinic on March 3, the Kids Coloring Corner, Official Florida Strawberry Festival Selfie Spots throughout the grounds and the Battle of the Bands Competition.

The festival, which began in March 1930 as a way for local producers to celebrate the harvest, has seen many changes over the years, but the spirit of the event remains the same. “The festival thrives on the volunteers, directors and staff who help to make this event possible, year after year,” says Jennifer Morgan, public relations and media representative for the Florida Strawberry Festival. “The family-friendly, hometown atmosphere is one of a kind, and we believe that is one constant that has helped to make the festival such a sweet slice of Americana.” The first thing you should know about the Florida Strawberry Festival is that the 2020 entertainment lineup is impressive, featuring

rom its small start in 1904 to the major production the fair has grown to be today, the organizers at the Florida State Fairgrounds know nothing brings the community together like a good time—and thatʼs exactly what they have planned for this yearʼs fair.
Whether youʼre a thrill seeker attending for the midway rides or youʼre looking for more of an educational experience at the livestock exhibits, there is so much to do at the Florida State Fair that it will be difficult to to cover it all in one short day. Speaking of thrills, while youʼre there, be sure to ride on North Americaʼs tallest traveling Ferris wheel, the Midway Sky Eye, or if youʼre really brave, the gravity-defying Street Fighter will whip, whirl and twirl you around. (Maybe skip the corn dog before this one!) If you have little ones in tow, the bumper cars, funhouse or giant slide are probably more your speed. Either way, there are plenty of ways to let loose at the fair this year, including a variety of other types of entertainment, including a sea lion show, dueling pianos, the Ripleyʼs Believe It or Not Odditorium, live animal demonstrations, motorcycle and circus shows, the Extreme Dogs show, an acrobatic slam dunk performance, a demolition derby, a ranch rodeo, an extreme pogo performance, the Kids 20

Can Cook show and interactive program, and nonstop live music. Also new this year is the first annual Deep Fried Dash 5K & Fun Run, where you can race through the fairgrounds and be the firstever Deep Fried Dash champion. If the fair food is calling your name, fear not. Dubbed “Floridaʼs Fried Food Capital,” the food game at this yearʼs Florida State Fair does not disappoint. While any fair can offer you funnel cake and cotton candy, weʼre betting youʼve never tried these options. New to the lineup this year, make sure to try the Cheeseburger-On-AStick, Steak n Eggs Sundae, Cheesy Tater Corn Dog, Oreo Funnel Cake, Sʼmores on a Stick, Peanut Butter Ramen Burger (we kid you not…), Cheesy Sriracha Funnel Bites or Piña Colada Candy Apple—our stomachs hurt already. You canʼt come to the fair and not learn about the history of our state, right? There are
a multitude of ways to sprinkle in a little education. Learn about how our food makes it from the farm to our table at the Ag-Venture exhibit. Also on the agriculture front, visit the Agriculture Hall of Fame, Cattle Ranching Museum, Florida Learning Garden, Little Farm Hands exhibit for kids ages 2-7, the livestock barns and milking parlor. Other educational opportunities include the Giraffic Menagerie Petting Zoo, Cracker Country where you can learn about Florida life in the 19th century, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Exhibit, Florida Forest Discovery, the Purebred Dog Exhibition, the Power of Steam exhibit and the Creative Living Exhibits, where works of art from people all over the state are on display. If one day at the fair just isnʼt enough, check the Florida State Fair website for information about RV camping on the fairgrounds and hotel partners nearby. Season Passes for the length of the fair are sold at participating Publix stores in the Tampa area. Florida State Fair // February 6-17 // Tickets can be purchased in advance at floridastatefair.com

nger room, rage room, smash room—it doesnʼt matter what you call it. These places are designed to let their clients let go of a little pent up stress. And although a psychologist or therapist may recommend alternatives to reducing stress, such as controlled deep breathing, lowering expectations and the mindful practice of keeping things in perspective, sometimes you just wanna break something. And you can at the Smash Room of Tampa. The Smash Room provides everything you need for a few minutes of anger management. But first things first, you have to suit up. Protective gear, including coveralls, a vest, gloves and protective face gear are all included. So are the “weapons.” Bats, crowbars, sledgehammers and more. They call them their “weapons of glass destruction.” Choose your weapon of choice, select your room and have at it. The best part? You donʼt have to clean up the mess. “Itʼs a relief,” says Office Manager Sue 22

// B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y Evans. “That first impact you scream and squeal. We are taught all our lives not to break things. Here, though, you have a freedom unlike any other.” Rooms are arranged to look like real office spaces, kitchens and living rooms. Complete with the appropriate accessories. Think dishes, computer equipment, lamps, desks, even mannequins. Unusual items may be on hand as well. Washers and dryers (who hasnʼt wanted to smash one of those!), guitars and more. Each smash session lasts 20 or 30 minutes and is guaranteed to work up a sweat. Once the workout is done, youʼll be left feeling tired and more relaxed. Consider it a physical release of your tension and stress. Sue describes it as cathartic. “When all is said and done, you walk out and leave the stress and the mess with us,” she says. Since opening its doors in 2018, the Smash Room has grown tremendously in popularity. “We can accommodate singles and groups
and have hosted many birthday parties, corporate team building events, divorce parties and more,” says Sue. “Itʼs a very bonding experience.” Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are necessary in order to have a room and items personalized for you. In a quest to personalize a smash room for clients, the staff has created rooms of balloons, punching bags, office equipment and more. Most will opt for the breakables, though. “Our industrial, retro theme lends itself to the experience,” says Sue. “Two 55-inch televisions allow friends and family in the waiting areas to see whatʼs happening in the smash rooms. Thereʼs also foosball with a lot of games, cornhole and indoor stress ball basketball. We have a never-a-dull-moment environment.” Smash Room Tampa // 14311 N Nebraska Avenue, Unit 4, Tampa // smashroomoftampa.com // Check Groupon for deals!

ould you believe there were almost 10 wineries right here in the 352? And many of them invite visitors to their vineyards and tasting rooms to sample their wines and learn more about the winemaking process. Whether youʼre a lover of sangria and blueberry wine or you prefer the traditional Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio, thereʼs certain to be a winery that fits your style just waiting to be discovered. Here are a few of our favorites. ISLAND GROVE WINE COMPANY Winery: 24703 SE 193rd Ave., Hawthorne // (352) 481-9463 Tasting Room: 21848 S CR 325, Hawthorne // (352) 481-1012 islandgrovewinecompany.com What started as a way to create something out of the blueberries that were left over at the end of harvest has evolved into 10 years of winemaking success. harvested,” says Sarah Aschliman, general manager of Island Grove Wine Company. “This sustainable practice of being able to use all our fruit each season was our goal with starting the winery.” The winery began in 2010 and is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year. Offering 16 varieties, Island Grove wines use healthy, antioxidant-rich berries for a full selection of sweet and dry, 100 percent fruit and fruit-infused grape wines. “Some of our most popular wines are our Sunshine State Sangrias,” says Sarah. “They are fruity and fun and even come in a can so they can go anywhere with you. Out of all 16 of our wines, though, one of my favorites has always been the Cranberry Harvest because of the tangy tartness of the fruit.” The winery is open to the public for tours Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm. While there, you can tour the wine-making facility and observe what is happening at that given moment, whether it be bottling, crushing or even canning wine. DETROIT TIGERS
PUBLIX FIELD AT JOKER MARCHANT STADIUM, LAKELAND
The Detroit Tigers have called Marchant Stadium in Lakeland home for more than 80 years—and for good reason. The park is dedicated to providing everyone, fans and players alike, a remarkable experience. One of the best aspects of the park? Shade! It may not seem like a big deal, but having 41 percent of the seats in the shade when Floridaʼs spring sun heats up is a definite plus. Recent park upgrades were part of a master plan to keep the Tigers in Lakeland for generations to come. The renovations promise more fun, more comfort and more entertainment. One of those new offerings is the air-conditioned 34 Club, named for 1934, the year the Tigers first trained in Lakeland. Great for singles or small groups, this indoor/outdoor all-you-can-eat buffet has an always evolving menu. Other concession areas have been remodeled to provide for shorter wait times and ease of ordering. If youʼre looking for a little player interaction, the Hooters Dugout is where itʼs at, featuring

After 22 years at Disneyʼs ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, the Atlanta Braves now have a brand-new spring training facility in West Villages, Florida near North Port in Sarasota County. Built from the ground up with the fan experience in mind, CoolToday Park features 8,000 seats, 6,200 of which are fixed in place. But donʼt count on spending too much time in your seat. Mike Dunn, vice president of Florida operations for the Braves, says they “want people to navigate.” The first- and third-base ticketed terraces give fans the opportunity to access airconditioned spaces, plus a full-service bar. The Coca-Cola Corner is a grassy area that goes from the left field line to left-center. Bring a chair and blanket, and donʼt forget the glove, too. Homeruns are bound to happen. The Budweiser Bench is just below the scoreboard and is also a popular spot to catch a hard-hit homer. For a unique experience, choose the Centauri Super Suite. Field-level seating next to the bullpen, the hospitality experience in this area is second to none. During the seventh-inning stretch if your stomach is speaking to you, the concession options are plentiful and delicious, especially if Southern comfort food is your style. Donʼt worry, regular ballpark fare is available as well. Once the game is over, thereʼs plenty to do in the Sarasota County area. Blind Pass Beach is less than a 30-minute drive, and the turquoise waters are more than inviting. Maybe a beachfront hotel is in your future? Try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling or just enjoy a relaxing day on the beach with family. If youʼd like to venture into nearby Sarasota, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is worth the drive. The 66-acre complex houses the Museum of Art, Circus Museum, Caʼ dʼZan Mansion and more. A handful of suggested itineraries can be found at ringling.org and include suggestions for a family trip, oddities and highlights, among others. Just four miles away is a hidden gem called the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. This 65-acre facility houses more than 20,000 living plants, including thousands of orchids, bromeliads and more. The interactive Ann Goldstein Childrenʼs Rainforest is a must when visiting with the kiddos. Donʼt forget to bring your camera—the photo ops are plentiful. The tour runs daily at 10:30am and 1:30pm and costs $45 per person. Jack Cormier, communications specialist with Visit Central Florida, recommends the night tour. “Most of the baseball games are day games, so you may be looking for something to do at night. Check out Wright After Dark. Itʼs a really neat way to see the architecture when itʼs all lit up from inside. Itʼs a cool nighttime option.” If a little outdoor exploring is more your speed, a visit to Lake Mirror Park Complex may be in order. Named one of the Top 10 Public Places in America in 2014, the park features a historic promenade, pedestrian walkways, an amphitheater and Hollis Garden. “The park features tiered gardens and classical music is piped in,” says Jack. “Itʼs a neat little oasis right in the middle of the city.” One of Jackʼs favorite spots is Circle B Bar Reserve, a prime spot for alligator spotting. “Itʼs a large nature preserve,” he says. “Probably the best place to see alligators in the state. Last time I was there we almost tripped over one. They can be that close. Visitors can walk out on the docks to see the larger ones and even the baby ones no bigger than a business card. You can also bike through the area.” Jack recommends bringing a camera or even art materials should the spirit move you to be creative. NEW YORK YANKEES GEORGE M. STEINBRENNER FIELD, TAMPA
2020 marks the Yankeesʼ 25th year training at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Built in 1996, the 31-acre park is both bold and beautiful. Perhaps the coolest part of the stadium is before you even walk in. Outside behind home plate youʼll find a miniature version of New Yorkʼs Monument Park, complete with the numbers and details of the 16 Yankees immortalized by the team. Another monument honors the victims and heroes of the September 11 terrorist attacks and features a piece of steel from the World Trade Center. If you had a birdʼs eye view of the stadium, you would see that the white rooftop panels spell out Yankees. Sticking with New York tradition, the ballpark fare at GMS Field features NY-style favorites, including deli sandwiches and delicious pizza. The Outback Steakhouse outpost is where youʼll find the Bloominʼ

If youʼre traveling with the little ones, check out the Family Meal Deal, featuring chicken tenders or slider buckets, plus more than one-pound of tasty fries. In one of the new Bullpen Clubs is where youʼll find the most innovative food options and specialty cocktails. If youʼre looking to score an autograph or two, your best bet is to hang by the open slots in the fence down the left field line. Donʼt forget a ball or glove to be signed just in case youʼre successful! To add a little adventure to your trip, Busch Gardens theme park is just six miles from the stadium and provides a day of fun for the whole family. Also close by is ZooTampa at Lowry Park, home to more than 1,300 animals. If youʼre looking to add a little education to your entertainment lineup, plan a trip to the Tampa Bay History Center. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
SPECTRUM FIELD, CLEARWATER
With 7,300 fixed seats and another 1,500 in the grass berm area (bring the sunscreen!), Spectrum Field is described as an intimate ballpark experience. The 360-degree concourse area features a kidsʼ playground and concession area called Shortstop Snacks, party suites, picnic areas, a team store and more. One of the most notable locales is FrenchyʼsTiki Pavilion located beyond the left field wall. Seats around the bar are first-come, first-serve, but the frozen margaritas are more than worth the effort! When hunger strikes, you know what to order. Cheesesteak, a Philly classic, is the way to go. Of course, the food court behind home plate has plenty more options to satisfy your hunger pangs, and The Craft Shack, just beside the main bar, offers eight local beers on tap. If youʼre looking for an autograph, Phillies players are available before the game for fans gathered in sections 118-120. Get their early, and bring a Sharpie. If attending an early game, youʼre going to want to fill the rest of your day with a little adventure and excitement. The nearby Clearwater Marine Aquarium is home to Winter and Hope the dolphins. You may know Hope from A Dolphinʼs Tale. This unique aquarium is all about education and preservation and allows guests an up-close experience with the resident animals, several of which are included with admission. When deciding where to take your special someone this month, why not choose a restaurant with a fantastic dessert menu? After all, nothing says ‘I love you’ quite as well as cheesecake and souffle. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N
Where to go: Mesa de Notte What to try: Tiramisu Jose Moreno, owner of Mesa de Notte, says you absolutely have to try the tiramisu when you bring your sweetie in this month. The tiramisu features lady finger cookies soaked in espresso and Kahlua, layered with mascarpone mousse and chocolate chips. “The combination of espresso with the creaminess of the Kahlua and mascarpone mousse—as well as the sweetness of the chocolate chips—make for a perfect balance of flavors,” Moreno says. We say yes, please! “This dessert is so delicious,” says Waica Micheletti, co-owner of Ivy On The Square. “Itʼs best served warm, because the best part is when you cut into the apple and the white chocolate cheesecake spills out onto the puddle of caramel. That bite is straight Southern, down-home goodness.”
La Cuisine
Where to go: La Cuisine What to try: Souffle A for-sure favorite on La Cuisineʼs dessert menu is the souffle, like the Raspberry Chambord Souffle pictured here. La Cuisineʼs souffle changes flavors depending on Chef Chad Karpʼs mood and whatʼs available for the season. The souffle is gluten free and made with real fruit purée prepared in house. It usually takes 15 minutes for the souffle to rise properly, says Owner and Operator Elodie Perron. “Our souffle is like nothing else,” Elodie says. “As we like to say, ʻIt is like a cloud in your mouth.ʼ” Weʼll just have to try it out to be sure!

If youʼre looking for ways to bring a little Fat Tuesday fun into your life this month, we have plenty of ideas.
