#NEONDREAMS #NEONDREAMS #NEONDREAMS Artists E.J. Nieves and Teddy Sykes bring the art show Neon Dreams to downtown’s Infinite Ale Works this month. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N Neon. What comes to mind? Probably the ʻ80s, maybe a little nostalgia. For artists E.J. Nieves and Teddy Sykes, neon has evolved to mean a great deal more. Although Neon Dreams promises to be a show unlike anything Ocala has seen before, thereʼs a bit of mystery behind it, which, come to find out, is exactly what these guys intended. “Much of the show is a secret,” E.J. says. “Just know that there will be Infinite beer available, light hors dʼoeuvres by La Cuisine, original artwork for sale, amazing music by DJ Just Joel (who does not consider himself a DJ, according to E.J., hence the name) and also an immersive art experience.” The one thing they do want people to know in advance is that neon clothing, anything reflective and any clothing that reacts positively to black light is encouraged.
If youʼve seen some of the showʼs promos on social media, youʼve probably seen the guys prowling around downtown Ocala in their neon ski masks and dropping the Neon House hashtag. So whatʼs it all about? Mostly just that these artists and their large group of supporters are marketing geniuses. The Neon House, though, is just another way this project is bringing people together. “Itʼs headquarters and studio space for the Neon Dreams team,” says E.J. “This is the place where people around the city can gather, help the team physically build elements for the show and bring T-shirts to get the Neon Dreams logos spray painted on their shirts.” The idea of Neon Dreams was first pulled from ʻ80s pop culture—imagine a room full of neon and chrome aesthetic, something that would demand attention. But when allowed to gain momentum through social media, the name has organically become something more unifying. “The Neon Dreams phrase now has turned into the concept of living your best life,” E.J. says. “It means living out the desires of your heart so vividly that they canʼt be ignored—like neon colors canʼt be ignored. We want people to live their neon dreams.” The show will display many mixed media masterpieces, all handmade, and although, in the beginning, they wanted to have the show at a local gallery and were bummed when the spaces were booked, they believe the location itself will bring in people who might not usually come to such an event. “Teddy and I are two people who are very hungry to showcase art and shift culture,” E.J. says. “Although showing in a professional gallery space is wonderful and many times ideal, it should not be the only option. Teddy talked to Sam Betty [the tap room manager at Infinite Ale Works] about using Infinite as a venue, and the rest was history. We love the fact that itʼs at a brewery. It changes the tone and tenor of an art show vibe.” If youʼre still a bit unsure of what to expect from Neon Dreams, donʼt let that deter you—go and know youʼre in for something more impactful than just an art show. As E.J. puts it… “A neon shirt has no race, no political background, no socio-economic status. When I spray each shirt, itʼs like adding one more person to something way bigger than us. Itʼs something we can hold up together, something we can all physically see that bonds us. I donʼt see anything but neon— and that neon unifies us.” Neon Dreams // Dec. 6, 6pm // Infinite Ale Works, 304 S Magnolia Ave., Ocala DEC ‘19

f you live in Marion County, youʼve probably heard of HITS, and although you know itʼs an equine event, you probably donʼt understand why you should go as a spectator and just how important it is to local and international riders. Read on to find out more. HITS is a premier horse show management company focused on the production of worldclass hunter and jumper competitions across the United States. Since its inception in Gainesville in 1982, it has grown to operate in four different states and at five different venues. Riders from across the United States, as well as from around the world, come to Ocala December through March to compete in the show jumping competition. From local farms to international riders representing Mexico, Ireland, Germany and beyond, HITS offers something for every level rider, including lead line riders at their first horse show and those competing in the Grand Prix and heading to the Olympics. HITS Ocala is held each year at Post Time 12
352PREVIEW.com
Farm, located on U.S. Highway 27, and this year, spectators and riders alike will notice many positive changes to the venue. “From the addition of nearly $2 million in prize money and $5 million total awarded throughout the circuit to new footing, paving, expanded food service options and new VIP Club membership options, a lot of changes and updates are being made to HITS Ocala,” notes Kristen Vale-Mosack, horse show office manager. “Post Time Farm is truly one of a kind. Having over 500 acres makes this one of the most horse-friendly facilities in America.” And if youʼre not a rider, thereʼs still plenty of ways to enjoy the equine action and learn what HITS is all about. The venue will be open to spectators Wednesday through Sunday from 8am-4pm to enjoy the horse shows. The featured Grand Prix is scheduled each Sunday at approximately 2pm. Admission is free every day except Sunday for the Grand Prix, which is $10. Also new this year, the event is offering a Sunday
Season Pass for just $20 per person, giving spectators access to all 10 Grand Prix events for a great price. Spectators can also check out the Eat & Boutique parties in the Vendor Courtyard each Friday night, offering special deals from vendors and local restaurants. If youʼre looking for one specific event to attend, make it the 7th Annual Great American $1 Million Grand Prix to close out the season on Sunday, March 22. “Being the biggest purse in the country,” says Kristen, “this prestigious event draws some of the top equestrians to HITS Post Time Farm and is certainly a favorite event for spectators to watch. The stakes are high, and the competition is tough in this nail-biting event.” HITS Ocala Winter Circuit // Events scheduled Dec. 2019-March 2020 // hitsshows.com/ocala/hits-ocala-winter-circuit // HITS Post Time Farm, 13710 U.S. Highway 27, Ocala // (352) 620-2275

hereʼs something to be said for tradition when it comes to the holiday season. Family gatherings, decorating the tree and television specials youʼve seen so many times you can recite the words by memory. For some young girls, part of their holiday tradition includes dancing in the annual Nutcracker production. This year, though, that tradition was threatened when the nonprofit that formerly produced the show held annually at the Ocala Civic Theatre unexpectedly shut down just weeks before the show was to open. Thatʼs when a visionary group of parents stepped in and the Marion Ballet Collaborative was born. This 501(c)(3) is bringing a new version of the treasured Nutcracker performance to the community. “The dancers, many of whom have been part of this holiday tradition for years, adopted a ʻshow-must-go-onʼ attitude and rallied community support,” says Janet Buehre, president of the newly formed Collaborative. “Premier Dance of Ocala and The Dance Company of Ocala donated rehearsal space; volunteers donated their dance knowledge, technical support, props and costumes; the Marion County School Board offered theatre space; and parents volunteered to sew or scout out costumes and build props. “As parents and committed volunteers over the years, we recognize that life brings change, often unexpectedly so, and that in itself is an important life lesson,” Janet adds. “But we also know that it is possible through commitment and hard work to persevere. The Nutcracker has been a happy highlight of the holidays for years, and our children are eager to continue to bring joy to the community through this timeless story while advancing the art of dance.” “My daughter, Delaney, was heartbroken when she first learned that the show wasnʼt going to happen—all the girls were,” says Melissa Peterson. “They had already put in so many hours rehearsing, and The Nutcracker is just such a huge part of all of our girlsʼ lives. Theyʼve had to learn that sometimes things are out of our control and we have to do what we can to make the best of a not-so-great situation.
Theyʼre excited to pick up where they left off and be able to bring this show that they love so much to the community.” For the girls, though, itʼs business as usual. After all, theyʼve been rehearsing for their production of The Nutcracker since August. Fortunately, the future of the Collaborative is looking bright. Several committed citizens have already stepped up and made considerable donations to ensure the success of the organization, and donations are welcome as the Collaborative works through its building phase. “Our goal for the future is to continue The Nutcracker in its new form in upcoming years, as not only is it an important part of the dancersʼ lives, it is also a holiday tradition shared by so many in our community,” says Janet. “Once this season is over, our plan is to open up Marion Ballet Collaborative to ballerinas throughout the community and from all dance schools. We want our version of The Nutcracker to be an inclusive production, one that dancers throughout Marion County can take part in and be proud of.” Marion Ballet Collaborative presents The Nutcracker // Marion Technical Institute, 1614 SE Fort King Street, Ocala // Dec. 20, 7pm; Dec. 21, 7pm; and Dec. 22, 2pm // Tickets by donation at the door // Visit facebook.com/MarionBalletCollaborative or email marionballetcollaborative@gmail.com for additional information.

Founded in 2011 by Daryl and Tracy Kirby, they purchased the 174 acres of land in Williston and rescued a historical locomotive that dates back to the late 1800s. The same train is now the centerpiece of the farm, giving rides to thousands of children and guests

each year. Kirby Family Farmʼs collection currently includes seven locomotives and over two dozen railcars, including the largest intact display of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus train in the world. Throughout the year, Kirby Family Farm hosts seasonal events, historical reenactments, field trips and other educational outings, all centered around their historic trains, in order to raise money for their outreach programs. Now in its eighth year, the Christmas Train event is completely organized by volunteers and raises money to support these programs. When you arrive on the farm, take the 20-minute journey around the Kirby Family Farm property on their authentic, narrowgauge 100-year-old locomotive to see the thousands of lights decorating the property. But the train ride is just the start to your holiday happiness—your tickets also includes a visit with Santa (pictures are free with your own camera!), Christmas friend character
experiences, manger babies petting zoo, rides on the antique 1950 Smith and Smith Ferris wheel and Italian carousel, a tractor-pulled wagon ride to a live manger scene and other childrenʼs rides. One of the highlights of your visit will be the Secret Elf Shoppe, where kids 10 and under (under 18 for foster and special needs youth) get to choose one free gift for themselves or someone special. ho says date night has to be reserved for a married or dating couple? Studies show that spending one-on-one time with each of your children will help improve communication levels and ease feelings of anxiety your child may be experiencing. Whether they are 5 or 15, some quality time together is probably long overdue. And we have the perfect suggestion. A mommy or daddy date night may be just what you both need. At Picassoʼs Palette in Ocala you can create a one-of-a-kind gift for someone special, whether itʼs a teacher, parent, aunt or uncle, or friend. “Parents and children can work on a variety of different items, including ʻBig and Littleʼ canvases, pottery, mosaics, hand building clay and glass fusing. We have items beginning at $10. We can help parents create keepsake items from hand print tiles and mugs to platters themed for the upcoming holidays,” says Darlene Gilhousen, who along with her husband, Charles, has owned Picassoʼs Palette since June. The best part, according to Darlene, is that no previous art experience is necessary. Your youngster will have a tough decision choosing just which project to commit to. The walls are lined with tempting pieces of pottery in just about every category you can think of, from sports and animals to nature and seasonal. Once the selections are made, let the creativity flow. All the supplies needed are provided for you. “Picassoʼs Paletteʼs environment is bright, cheery and definitely sparks imagination,” says Darlene. “We offer a wide variety of family-friendly events, from Tea with Mom on Motherʼs Day to Hot Chocolate with Santa—and everything in between.” Most projects can be taken home the same
day theyʼre created. The exception is kiln-fired pottery pieces, which take a week to 10 days to fire and set, but thatʼs still plenty of time to get it wrapped and under the tree. Before you leave, make sure to stop by the café inside Picassoʼs Palette, where youʼll find a nice lunch menu, including buffalo chicken and chicken Caesar wraps, BLT sandwiches and cranberry chicken salad on a giant croissant. But best of all, each week they whip up a variety of mini artisan cupcakes in flavors such as orange dreamsicle, cherry lime aid, cappuccino, butterscotch and mint chocolate chip. If youʼre looking for something more filling, venture down the road to J Rocks Pizzeria and make your own pizza pies. Choose the size and start with the sauce. Options include sweet and spicy, ricotta, barbecue, ranch, alfredo and more. Then, pile with cheeses, meats and veggies. Your youngster will love the freedom to create their own meal just the way they want it. You can also choose one of their specialty pizzas or sandwiches, wings or a seafood
basket, and the kidsʼ menu comes complete with the always-popular chicken tenders and corndog options. Save room for dessert, though. A trip to Ritaʼs Italian Ice & Frozen Custard is last on the agenda. Their menu is extensive, and there are no wrong choices. We recommend indulging in the Reeseʼs Peanut Butter Cup Blendini. If youʼre feeling a big more traditional, Ritaʼs classic Italian ice is a real crowd pleaser and comes in dozens of tempting flavors. Downtown Date Night
DOWNTOWN OCALA IS THE PLACE TO BE DURING THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. FROM SHOPPING AND DINING TO SOME OF OUR AREA’S FAVORITE SEASONAL TRADITIONS, GRAB A DATE AND SPEND AN EVENING IN THE HEART OF OCALA.
By Melissa Peterson

Thereʼs nothing like downtown Ocalaʼs seasonal light display to put you in the holiday spirit and make you feel like a kid again. And there are so many fantastic events happening this month! Whether spending an evening with a special someone, planning a friendsʼ night out or penciling in some family time, weʼre here to offer ideas for what to eat, where to shop and how to have a little fun.
Downtown Dining
Looking for the perfect spot to grab a bite? Whether youʼre wanting a sit-down dinner or something sweet to go, youʼll find it all downtown. Here are some of our favorites. IVY ON THE SQUARE You can always count on the ladies of Ivy On The Square to not only stimulate your taste buds but to elevate your mood as well. Beautifully decorated for the holidays, Ivy On The Squareʼs warm yet modern décor, and equally warm Southern hospitality, are a welcome pit stop on your downtown adventure. If youʼre out and about with the family, rest easy knowing that kids are absolutely welcome here. Itʼs just relaxed enough that the whole family will enjoy it, and their kidsʼ menu includes tasty meals the kids will love. For the adults, we definitely recommend the Baked Krispy Chicken with a side of homemade mac ʻnʼ cheese, an Ivy specialty, and a slice of Creamy Peanut Butter Pie. (Donʼt worry—calories donʼt count in December.) Ivy On The Square is open for dinner until 9pm Tuesday through Saturday and offers tapas and cocktails Thursday through Saturday after 9pm but is closed on Sunday. While youʼre there, make sure to walk across the street to check out the Ivy On The Square Boutique, where you can find the perfect gift for those on your shopping list. 53 S Magnolia Ave. // (352) 622-5550 // ivyhousefl.com THE BLACK SHEEP ON BROADWAY One of downtown Ocalaʼs newest locales, The Black Sheep is billing itself as a gastropub. What does that mean? It means itʼs more than just another bar—it offers a wide variety of creative cuisine as well, including chipotle pork tacos, bacon and gouda mac ʻnʼ cheese bites, gator tail, caprese sliders, and honey hot chicken and waffles sliders. If youʼre out on the weekend, this is the perfect spot to take in some live music from a variety of local musicians. OCALA’S CHOCOLATE AND CONFECTIONS If you opted out of dessert after dinner, maybe youʼll feel like a sweet treat once youʼve wandered the downtown area for a bit. If thatʼs the case, stop by Ocalaʼs Chocolate and Confections for one of the 30 flavors of ice cream or, even better, handmade truffles, fudge, chocolate strawberries, chocolate covered dried fruit, toffee, bark varieties, macaroons, peanut butter cups and many other chocolate products. Although the shop is small, itʼs big on hometown pride, so when youʼre in the market for gift ideas, rather than run to your nearest big box store for another selection of mass-produced chocolate, consider supporting this local shop with one of its many box and basket assortments. They can also customize your chocolate to a specific theme or even into your business logo. 104 E Fort King St. // (352) 789-6882 // ocalaschocolate.com

ST. AUGUSTINE NIGHTS OF LIGHTS
St. Augustine Through February 2 As our nationʼs oldest city, St. Augustine is filled with history and intrigue. And this month, through February 2, the historic sights along the brick streets will be lit up with millions of mini lights. This award-winning display was named one of the 10 best holiday lighting displays in the world by National Geographic in 2011 and 2012. And itʼs only grown since then! The festivitiesʼ origins date back to the Spanish tradition of displaying white candles in windows during the holiday season. The photo opportunities are endless, including the huge tree situated in the center of the Plaza de la Constitucion. Nearby Flagler College, the Lightner Museum, St. George Street and more are also beautifully decorated. From roofs to doorways to 28

landscaping, the historic district glows with holiday spirit. While there, plan to grab dinner at a local eatery or indulge in a cup of hot chocolate for some added cheer. Guests are invited to walk the streets for a leisurely tour of the lights, or there are multiple tours available for those who donʼt want to miss any of the sights. Old Town Trolleysʼ tour includes complimentary magical viewing glasses, hot apple cider and tasty cookies. The tour departs from the Visitor Information Center nightly beginning at 6pm. Ripleyʼs Red Trains Nights of Lights Tours invites guests to join in the holiday caroling on their “lightseeing” tour. For a different perspective, try the Eco Tours one-hour boat tour or a Scenic Cruise aboard the Victory III on the weekend. Other options include horse-drawn carriage, helicopter and electric cart tours. For a complete
listing of available options, check out the visitstaugustine.com website.

omewhere along the gift-giving line, giant tins of popcorn became the go-to present for people you donʼt know well but still have to buy for during the holiday season. Maybe itʼs that weird co-worker you were stuck with during the Secret Santa drawing. Maybe itʼs your momʼs third cousin twice removed that you only see during the month of December. Or maybe youʼre stocking up on hostess gifts for holiday parties you may— or may not—get invited to. Either way, kick your popcorn game up a notch by buying this yearʼs stash from Kernel Poppers. We promise your gift will earn you plenty of praise from anyone on your shopping list. Heck, you might even put popcorn on your list. AUTHENTIC ITALIAN Located inside the 100-year-old historic Vidal House in downtown Gainesville, The Fat Tuscan Café offers cooking classes on-site, private event space, in-house catering, corporate retreats and team-building cooking classes and, most recently, cooking class tours in Italy. In business since 2008, all their food is prepared using only the freshest ingredients available and is sourced locally as often as possible. If youʼd like to learn to prepare authentic Italian cuisine, The Fat Tuscan Café is worth the drive north to Gainesville. All classes are listed right on the businessʼ website, and you can sign up and pay for classes in advance while youʼre browsing. Each class centers around a theme or subject matter, and some classes are meant to be taken as a series, where each class builds on the previous, encouraging students to attend the entire series and to learn something new at each class. Previous themes include pasta making, winter soups, cooking with fresh herbs, pastries, crepes, cheesecake, bread making, making pizza from scratch, biscotti, butternut and assorted pumpkin squash, pies, lasagna, tarts, tiramisu and cantucci cookies, and winter preserves. All classes at The Fat Tuscan Café are limited to no more than 15-20 students, offer a hands-on experience and are taught by either Owner Michelle Gioviti or a trained in-house staff member. But donʼt worry, youʼll get to sample your fare, too. Typically, a full-course meal is prepared by the instructor and then eaten by the students. At some classes, you might take your finished project home to bake, and youʼll always leave with the recipe so you can prepare the same meal for your family. The Fat Tuscan Café also offers off-site cooking classes and a cooking camp for kids during the summer.
Kitchen Cooking School and the associated cafe, located in downtown Leesburg, opened its doors in November and offers cooking classes for adults, couples, children and larger groups and is also an event boutique. “We believe everyone needs to eat so anyone can learn to cook,” she says. “Our youngest student has been 18 months old, and the oldest 94 years old. Each cooking class is directed to different audiences, but there are classes for everyone.” Chef Zeʼ offers a variety of consumerfriendly classes and some professional certification courses as well. The classes are interactive, allowing students to see recipes demonstrated right in front of them—and of course taste the finished product with generous samples. Hand-on classes are also available, where students can put on an apron and help prepare the eveningʼs menu.

December classes include cooking classic holiday meals and a special hands-on cookie ornament-decorating class. All classes are listed on the website and are announced on the schoolʼs Facebook page. Chef Zeʼ not only enjoys watching her students learn new things and try new food but sitting down and eating with them at the end of the class. “During my classes, I hope people learn the value of family friendships and understand that food is the common denominator for the human race. Food is our substance, and without it, we cease to exist… literally.”
