THE TOP 10 HOTTEST THINGS TO DO, SEE AND CHECK OUT FOR THE MONTH OF JULY.
SUPPORTING THE ARTS
Marion Cultural Alliance is all about creating new opportunities in the community for local artists, and this month, MCA is offering two special events in order to do just that. From July 2-18, MCA and Free the Ocklawaha present Ocklawaha: Wild and Endangered River at Brick City Center for the Arts. This multi-media art exhibit explores one of America’s Endangered Rivers and features internationally acclaimed painter Margaret Tolbert, award-winning photographers, Paleo art sculptor, landscape painters and more. If you’d like to ensure MCA is able to continue its mission, you’ll want to support their Art in the Attic y-ART Sale, an annual fundraising event featuring art treasures and great deals. The event takes place July 24-August 1, but you can get a sneak peek at the opening event on July 24 from 5-7pm at the Brick City Center for the Arts. Tickets are $20 for MCA members and $25 for nonmembers. Tickets are available online, at MCA and will also be available at the door. Visit mcaocala.org for more information.

THE HOT LIST
SPEAKEASYS
1
Take our word for it, these throwback bars are all the rage right now—and Ocala has its fair share of new hangouts for patrons to check out. Ocala’s The Thirsty Cobbler opened right before the coronavirus locked down bars and restaurants, but with their reopening, the new speakeasy is open and ready for business. Waica Micheletti, co-owner of The Thirsty Cobbler and Ivy on the Square, designed the intimate space using inspiration from the history of the circa 1886 building that once housed a shoe cobbler and a harness store. Just like the speakeasys of the 1920s, when the bar is open and the drinks are flowing, it’s a bit hush hush. And yes, you’ll need a password to get in. Visit The Thirsty Cobbler’s Facebook page for opening dates and times and the password of the day. Looking for another authentic speakeasy experience? Check out the Anti Monopoly Drug Store, also in downtown Ocala, located in the same building as The Lodge. Check out their Facebook page for opening information.
OPEN AIR CONCERTS
THREE
With concert venues just beginning to reopen, everyone is looking for unique and innovative ways to bring music and performance art safely back to audiences. The Reilly is hosting Wynonna & The Big Noise live at the Ocala Drive-In. Happening Friday, July 3 at 8pm, one of country music’s most iconic voices, Wynonna, returns to Ocala. Premium tickets are $300 per car (up to 6 guests), and general admission tickets are $135 per car (up to 6 guests). Gates open at 5pm, and the show starts at 8pm. Find out more at reillyartscenter.com. The Villages Entertainment has also created a fun, open-air concert series. Whether you come in your car or golf cart, you can take in these amazing musical acts all from the safety of your own vehicle. The fun happens at The Villages Polo Club July 20-25. A different act will be featured each night, and the series features acts including Absolute Queen, The Atlantic City Boys and even Clint Black! Check out the full schedule at thevillagesentertainment.com.
NATURE We know. It’s July, and it’s hot, but hear us out. Many respected public health officials have suggested that if you’re going to venture out and about during the pandemic, the safest place to spend your time is outside where there’s plenty of fresh air (while still practicing social distancing, of course). Whether you’re enjoying one of our local hiking trails, camping at a Florida State Park or swimming in the springs, stay safe and get outside this month.

SUMMER CAMP
LIVE MUSIC
Our local musicians took a break for a few months but are back and better than ever, performing live music at some of our favorite Ocala restaurants and bars, such as Bank Street Patio Bar, Pi on Broadway, The Keep Downtown, The Corkscrew, The Lodge, Hiatus Brewing Company, Charlie Horse, O’Malley’s Alley, Sayulita Taqueria, Infinite Ale Works, La Cuisine and more. We think the best way to keep tabs on who’s playing where is by browsing the Events tab on Facebook.

PUBLIC ART
6
It was up in the air until early last month on whether kiddos would get to partake in the time-honored tradition of summer camp this year. Although some camps decided to opt out this summer, there are still camp opportunities. The City of Ocala’s Department of Recreation and Parks is opening registration for camp two weeks before the session begins, so there is still availability for the month of July. Visit ocalafl.org and navigate to the recreation page to learn more and register. Picasso’s Palette is offering half- and full-day art camp throughout July. Check out their website (picassospalette.com) and Facebook page for details. There are even virtual summer camp options, if staying home is your choice. A quick internet search will bring up plenty of options, including several local sports camps.
If you haven’t noticed, our downtown area is full of public art for our community to enjoy. Recently, several new murals have graced the sides of downtown buildings, including the exterior wall of the Ocala Citizen Service Center on Southeast Third Street and the west-facing wall of the Brick City Center for the Arts. To learn more about these pieces, check out our story on page 10.

TRIBUTE BANDS Love tribute bands? Miss seeing them live? Here’s your chance to be one of the first people to visit the Reilly Arts Center since it was temporarily closed due to COVID-19. The WIND FM Rocks the Reilly series presents this amazing tribute to The Beatles. You’ll be stunned at the realistic sights and sounds, as extraordinary effort is made to recreate the excitement of an actual Beatles concert with professional costume changes and actual instruments used by The Beatles. The show takes place July 11 at 7:30pm, and guests will be assigned a seat in their section when they arrive at the theater to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Face coverings are suggested. Find out more and purchase tickets at reillyartscenter.com.

BRICK CITY FOOD TOURS
Whether introducing out-oftown guests to Ocala’s food scene or checking out some new restaurants that you’ve been meaning to visit, let Brick City Food Tours be your guide. The tour will visit five sit-down locations in downtown Ocala. Between samples, co-founder Kaitlyn Butler and her husband, Kendrick, will share their experience of local customs, historic stories and specialty shops. To learn more and sign up, visit facebook.com/brickcityfoodtours.
COUCH SESSIONS Here’s your chance to “sip, sit and support” a group of talented Ocala artists and musicians in a unique, experience-based format. The 2020 season offers four different lineups in four different locations. The first event happened in June, but there’s still plenty of time to catch the July, August and September events. The July event takes place at the Workspace Collective on July 10 from 8-10pm. You’ll be able to check out the musical act Caly & Megan and artwork by Michelle St. Laurent. ART IN THE CITY It’s safe to say the art scene has been expanding in downtown Ocala for some time. However, the past few months have been something special. t’s an exciting time for artists—and Ocala—as bright color, incredible detail and gorgeous imagery arrives in the revitalized downtown area. Over the past month, several exceptional, eye-catching murals popped up around town or have been set into motion. It’s an instance of art’s expansion in the city, bringing several new reasons to visit downtown. Ocala is evolving, and art has been a significant catalyst, adding a new depth to downtown while providing people with a reason to keep coming back.

352PREVIEW.COM
Yes, art in Ocala has become much more prevalent as of late, but why? The City of Ocala’s First Friday Art Walk has unquestionably influenced the growth of art in the city, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t suggest the impact that FAFO has had. Downtown Ocala locations such as the Brick City Center for the Arts and the Magnolia Art Exchange have played an essential role in bringing art to the city, as has the City of Ocala’s Cultural Arts Department. “The Brick” provides gallery space for artists and a place
for them to sell their work, while the Magnolia Art Exchange allows artists to have their own workspace to create. Of course, there are other great galleries, exhibition spaces and art studios around town that aid in the growth of art and local artists alike. This is all culminating in a new art movement downtown and a lively dose of new art into the community. With art taking over Downtown Ocala, all the way from Infinite Ale Works to Sayulita Taqueria, a handful of exceptional new murals have made their debut. The City of Ocala, through its Cultural Arts Department, is excited about several new mural projects around town, including a recently commissioned “living art mural” in the downtown area. The mural was conceived by Miami-based artist Ernesto Maranje and is located on the west-facing wall at the Brick City Center for the Arts. The concept of Ernesto’s mural is a blend of street art that also incorporates horticulture into the design. Upon completion, the mural will be one of only a few like it in the world. The piece includes Florida flora and fauna, all seamlessly combined for a cohesive and colorful concept. The background ties in native plants, a beautiful blue sky and water, with the focus being a Florida black bear accompanied by two Roseate spoonbills. The mural is also host to custom-fabricated plant trellises, which will incorporate curated plants into the art for a semi-three-dimensional look. Locally based and nationally recognized

artist Drake Arnold recently completed a mural dubbed Electromagnetism. The piece affords downtown Ocala with the chance to experience augmented reality. A mural like none other around Ocala, the design uses Arnold’s “Fractal Spirit AR” app to bring the image to life. The app uses image recognition software and overlays custom three-dimensional animation to match each piece of art. The viewer can then look at the artwork from different angles, while threedimensional animations play interactively along the way. Electromagnetism is based on

Camping Made Easy Planning a family camping trip doesn’t have to involve hours in the car and days’ worth of stress. For your family’s first campout, take in these tips to keep it hassle free. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N
C
amping, it’s one of those must-do summertime traditions. Roasting ooey-gooey marshmallows, sitting around the campfire, snuggling in a tent—sounds idyllic, right? Unfortunately, for parents, pulling off this family getaway can also seem daunting, especially when it’s your first time. Packing for the unknown, planning for mosquito bites, deciding what your picky eaters will have for dinner, driving hours in the car. And the dirt. Take a deep breath. Camping doesn’t have to be that stressful. Here are some tips I’ve learned after years of camping with my kiddos.
14
352PREVIEW.COM
Stay close to home. If you’ve never been camping before as a family, stick to a campground close to home. There are tons of great campgrounds within an hour or so of Ocala. We planned our first camping trip to Silver Springs State Park, which is a quick, five-minute drive from our house. There was absolutely no stress over forgetting items or what we would do if one of the kids got sick. Plus there’s a Walmart basically across the street. Make it a weekend trip. This eliminates the stress of keeping kids occupied in the car for hours and needing to pack enough clothes and food for a week. Also, if it turns out that camping isn’t your family’s idea of a good time, the suffering only has to last a few days. Don’t try to rough it. When booking your campsite, I suggest skipping the campgrounds where you have to rough it. Stay at a campground with running water and electricity at each site. As a family, we prefer staying at Florida State Parks, as almost all state parks have electricity and water at each site and hot showers and laundry facilities in the bathhouses. Stop worrying about staying clean. Seriously, just let it go. The kids are going to get dirty. That’s part of the fun of camping—kids can be kids. They can ride their bikes, play in the woods, search for bugs, dig in the mud, all while you kick back and relax. And if they’re dirty at the end of the day, it simply means they had a good time. Plus if you’ve taken my advice, showers are just a short walk away. Don’t hover. This goes back to letting the kids be kids. We’ve found in our travels that campers look out for one another, especially kids. It’s a safe, enclosed space. Let them explore on their own. Give them a little more freedom than you might offer at home. Unlike in a hotel, you don’t have to worry about your kids running around and waking up your neighbors. Let them run free. Let them scream and play. Camping is an opportunity for our kids to get back to good, old-fashioned fun.
WHAT TO BRING The best advice for what to pack on your first camping trip is to keep it simple. I promise you don’t need all the latest camping gadgets and gear. Take the basics your first time out, and keep a running a list of the things you wish you had brought so you can be better prepared the next time. Here’s a short checklist of just the necessities. A tent: Choose a family-size tent that lets you spread out a bit and gives everyone a spot
WATCH // EXPLORE // CRAVE for their own stuff. Especially in the summer, you never know when an afternoon rain shower will pop up. Although I can testify that even the best tents are prone to leaking, look for one that specifies that it’s water resistant. Also, it’s a good idea to bring a large tarp to place on the ground under your tent. Not only will this help with rocks and bumpy surfaces, it can also be a barrier if the ground gets wet. Sleeping bags or inexpensive air mattresses: This is really just a preference. I prefer sleeping on an air mattress over a sleeping bag. If you do go the air mattress route, don’t buy the expensive ones. I promise, all air mattresses will get a hole in them. Buy the cheap ones, use them a few times and then throw them away and buy new ones. After a few trips, my family chose to invest in camping cots. They get you off the ground and are actually
super comfy, but these are definitely not necessary for your first time out. A fan: Real camping enthusiasts will probably say this is a luxury, but you’ll be sleeping basically outside… in the summer. Trust me, everyone will be friendlier with a fan in the tent. Plus air circulation helps keep the bugs at bay. You can purchase a batteryoperated fan, or bring an electric fan and plug it in at your site. Just don’t forget to then also bring an extension cord or extra batteries. Camping chairs: One of our favorite parts of camping is sitting around the campfire and just relaxing, especially at night after the kids have gone to bed. You’ll definitely want to bring a comfy chair to unwind in. Also, don’t forget the bug spray. Again, it’s Florida in the summer. Camping with toddlers? I recently saw an amazing camping high chair set up. The fun stuff: Definitely bring the bikes,
scooters, a deck of cards and maybe a few games. It’s up to you whether you leave the electronics at home. I usually bring a power strip to charge my cell phone, and I do let my kids play their Nintendo Switch or a game on the iPad before bed. Our only rule about electronics is that they can’t be used during the day when the kids could be outside playing. Disposable kitchen items: On your first time out, don’t invest in a ton of outdoor cooking items. Either bring a few cups, plates and cutlery sets from home or go the paper plates and plastic forks route. It’s also a good idea to bring a bucket, sponge, dish soap and hose if you plan to wash dishes while you’re out.
and although you might be concerned about attracting bears (as you should), you’ll also want to think about the smaller creatures of the forest, like racoons and squirrels. (We once had a squirrel chew all the way through our plastic bin that we left outside during the day!)
FINDING A CAMPSITE
We find that picnic-style foods are the best for short camping trips. Hotdogs, deli meat sandwiches, chips and fruit are all good ideas. Keep it simple and go for cereal or easy items like bagels for breakfast. Most campgrounds have a charcoal grill at each site.
If you opt for a Florida State Park, visit floridastateparks.org and click on the “Camping & Lodging” link. You can search for parks with camping here, or if you already know the park you’d like to visit, you can type in the name and go right to that park’s webpage. From there, you’ll be linked to the Reserve America website to find a spot and book your space. If you’re looking for something this weekend, you might be limited in where you can go. Visit floridastateparks.reserveamerica.com and click on the “Camping This Weekend” link to find last-minute spots. Outside of the state park system, the non-state-specific Reserve America site (reserveamerica.com) also lets you book
You’ll want to bring a cooler to keep food cold. You’ll also want to bring something to store your dry food in. We’ve used plastic storage bins with a lid in the past, and I suggest keeping those bins in your car. Animals love campers,
private and some federal campgrounds. Federal campgrounds include sites in National Parks and federal forests, like the Ocala National Forest. You can also visit recreation.gov for additional federal campgrounds.

PADDLES UP! Ready to take to the water, but don’t have your own kayak? There are plenty of paddling tours available in and around Ocala. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N
GET UP AND GO KAYAKING Take advantage of the summer months and kayak through Three Sisters Springs with tour operator Get Up And Go Kayaking. From April through November, Three Sisters Springs is open to kayak traffic because the manatees that call this area home in the winter have ventured out away from the spring. The Three Sisters Springs tour, which begins in King’s Bay, showcases the crystal-clear waters of one of Florida’s hidden gems. For an added bit of fun, Get Up And Go Kayaking offers kayaks with clear bottoms so you can see everything beneath you as you paddle. “This is a very unique aspect of our tour that some may never have seen before,” says Austin Adkins, owner of the Get Up And Go Kayaking Crystal River location. “Unlike a traditional kayak, our crafts do not inhibit the view of the guests operating them. When a manatee, fish, turtle or other aquatic animal is deep beneath the water and unable to be seen from the surface, our kayaks allow our guests to see them clearly below them as they paddle through the water.” Another fun tour option is the nighttime GlowIn-The-Dark Tour, which operates year-round. For this tour, you’ll paddle from King’s Bay, through the waters of Crystal River and into Jurassic Springs and Hunter Springs, all while on a clear kayak as LED lights light the waterway. “We offer these tours to visitors to show them a different side of Florida,” says Adkins. “It is our passion to showcase the natural beauty of Crystal River and the animals that inhabit it in a unique 16

ADVENTURE OUTPOST If you’re looking for a tour operator to take you to some of North Central Florida’s most remote waterways, Adventure Outpost, based in the Gainesville area, is just the ticket. Although they do offer trips to popular spots like the Rainbow River, Santa Fe River, Ocklawaha River and Juniper Run, Adventure
Outpost also leads tours to Bear Creek through the backwaters of the lower Ocklawaha basin, Black Creek in the Jennings State Forest and Bennett’s Creek, near the mouth of the Withlacoochee River. They also offer X-Stream Explorations to wetland spots that can only be reached through kayaks, like River Styx, New River and Upper Santa Fe River. Leading multiple tours a week, the trips offer a fun, hands-on opportunity to learn about the history, geology, ecology and wildlife of the river. There are options for every level of skill and interest. According to the website, “We like our tours to feel very relaxed and natural, so we don’t insist that the group paddle together in a tight little tour group. Those who like to hear more about the river can stay closer to the guide. But
if you are more inclined to go at your own pace and away from the group, that’s no problem. Just be sure to let the guide know so he can inform you about any important river notes, such as tricky forks where you might get lost.” You can visit the website to see a complete list of guided tours, along with detailed information on the skill level required for each tour, a lengthy description of the tour and information on the history and wildlife you might encounter. You can also view the river locator map to see exactly where each tour will lead you. Adventure Outpost also offers a shuttle service and rentals for unguided paddle trips along the Santa Fe River. You can view reservation information, prices and rental options on the website. (386) 454-0611 // adventureoutpost.net JUL ‘20

BEAT THE HEAT Sure, a pool is nice when the summer sun is scorching hot, but if you don’t have a pool, don’t worry. There are plenty of creative ways to stay cool and beat the heat. Even outside. In Florida. In the summer. // B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y
BALLOON BONANZA
DIY SLIP ‘N’ SLIDE
Water balloons are a great source of old-school fun. To add some newfangled technology, though, we recommend Bunch O Balloons. You can purchase these at most stores and on Amazon. This clever creation allows you to blow up 100 water balloons in a matter of minutes. We will never fill water balloons up by hand again! Use empty tubs to hold the balloons. Add some water first to avoid premature popping. Set the tubs in the middle of the group of kids (or adults) and watch them go. To make the fun last, play catch with water balloons instead. Or try playing a game of hot potato with your water balloon! Pass the balloon around the circle without popping it. When the music stops, whoever is left with the balloon has to pop it over their heads.
Materials: • Heavy-duty clear plastic sheeting (any hardware or home improvement store should carry it) • Garden stakes • Colored duct tape • Velcro • Pool noodles for buffers if desired • Dish soap
HOSE LIMBO Turn on the hose and see how low the kids can go. Start the water stream up high (a handle sprayer helps with this game) and work your way down. Play some summer music for added fun.
WATER GUN FREEZE TAG The object of the game: Don’t get frozen. The person who is “it” has a water gun, and they try to tag other players by spraying them with water. Once tagged, you have to be touched by someone still in the game to become an active player again. Last person to get tagged becomes it.
Choose a smooth or slightly inclined section of your yard to lay out the plastic sheeting. The sheeting should be about 6 feet wide for safety purposes. Spread it out to the desired length. // If using pool noodles as a barrier, wrap the noodles in the edge of the sheeting and secure the sheeting where it meets with a secure Velcro strip every foot or so. // Turn the whole sheeting over to create a smooth surface before staking it down using the garden stakes. // Place U-shaped garden stakes at regular intervals along the length of the slide. Cover the stakes with duct tape to avoid injury when sliding down slide. // Use a slow trickle hose or sprinkler to add water to your slide. // To make the slide slick, use a small amount of dish detergent down the center of the sliding surface.
SPONGE WARS If you have at least six people (or more!), here’s a fun game for you. Make two single file lines, sitting on the floor. Face the back of the person in front of you. Place a bucket
of water and a sponge at the front of the line. At the back of the line, place an empty pail. When the timer beeps, the first person soaks the sponge and passes it over their head to the person behind them. Once at the end, the last player squeezes out the water to see who can fill their pail first. Pass the sponge back to the front one player at a time. Keep going until the first team fills their pail. Change positions with each new game to keep it fun for all. To change it up, you could use small disposable bathroom cups. To add to the challenge, poke a few holes in the bottom of the cups.
SUPER SPRINKLERS Forget the boring old back and forth sprinkler. An internet search reveals that sprinklers for kids have come a long way in recent years in terms of fun. Have a trampoline? Did you know there’s such a thing as a trampoline sprinkler? There is, and it’s super cool! Look it up! Then there’s the inflatables. From giant fire hydrants and rainbows to oversized unicorns and beach balls, surprise your kiddos with a cool way to cool down this summer.
WASH THE CAR What kid doesn’t love to wash the car? Sure, they play with the hose and spray each other more than actually cleaning the car, but that’s the point, right? Give them some buckets and sponges, and set them free. Don’t get upset if the car doesn’t get clean, though! This is more about having a little fun. JUL ‘20

Holly Bluff Marina, DeLand Considering a vacation but don’t have any desire to deal with crowds or busy resorts? A vacation experiencing real Florida is as easy as calling Holly Bluff Marina to reserve a houseboat. General Manager Jennifer Armstrong says to consider it your apartment on the water. “If you’re big on excitement and lots of people, this probably isn’t the vacation for you,” she says. “If you’re looking for relaxation, nature and time with friends and family, then this is a great opportunity.” Holly Bluff Marina offers a variety of houseboats available to rent, from a 38-foot four sleeper, to a 60-foot 10 sleeper. And they come fully stocked with everything you need for a quick weekend away or a week-long excursion. Prices vary depending on the length of your trip and the chosen boat. “All the comforts of home are included, from linens to kitchenware,” Jennifer says. “The boats are fully air conditioned and have bathrooms and showers. You just bring your personal belongings and any food you’d like and you’re all set. The boats come equipped with a propane grill, too, plus a stove and microwave.” Part of the draw to renting a houseboat and setting sail down the St. John’s River is
the opportunity to be up close and personal with nature and the natural surroundings. Basically, once you’ve completed your onboard orientation and captain’s lesson, you’re free to explore within the established boundaries. Boaters can travel 20 miles to the south to the railroad bridge at Lake Monroe and 30 miles to the north to Silver Glen Springs. “With all the coves, islands and dead lakes along the way, that’s well over 50 miles to explore,” says Jennifer. “Silver Glen is wonderful for swimming, stand up paddle boarding and generally just hanging out all day. Hontoon Island State Park is great for hiking, bird watching and exploring.” Along the way, houseboaters have the opportunity to tie the boat off to a tree or drop anchor to get off and explore the surroundings. The boats also feature front and back decks and an expansive top deck, perfect for sightseeing or sunbathing. Fishing is great on the river, and even amateur anglers can hook large mouth bass, bluegill, gar, speckled perch and more. Many guests bring their own kayaks or canoes for day trips as well. Or, if you prefer, you can rent one from Holly Bluff’s partner company. There’s plenty of storage on the houseboat to bring them along. Jennifer, who used to live the city life in Orlando, loved the houseboating experience so much she now calls a houseboat home. “Exploring old Florida aboard a boat is just a really fantastic thing to do,” she says. “It’s a real opportunity to get away from it all and bond with family and friends. The surroundings are beautiful, and the pace is slow and relaxing. Last night I sat on the front deck and watched two manatees chowing down; then a blue heron
came and landed on one of their backs. It’s just very peaceful. If you just give it a try, you’re likely to get hooked. We have people coming back year after year to rent a houseboat to get away for a bit.” Holly Bluff Marina // hollybluff.com // (800) 237-5105 // 2280 Hontoon Rd., DeLand
Eaton Beach Adventure Sports, Lake Weir Marion County has plenty of lakes to explore and tour, especially if you have your own boat. If you don’t, though, Lake Weir may be the best option for you if you’re looking to stay close to home. Here, you can rent a variety of boats and personal watercraft for a fun-filled day on the water from several companies surrounding the lake. One such company, Eaton’s Beach Adventure Sports, offers adventurous guests a little bit of everything. With room for 8-10 people, a pontoon boat is a great way to explore the lake. The cost is $165 for two hours with each additional hour running $35. Reservations are recommended to ensure a boat is available, and drivers must be 25 or over (some restrictions apply). If you’re not opposed to a little leg exercise, the two-person pedal boat costs just $25 to rent. If adventure is what you’re craving, twoperson jet skis are available for rent to those 16 and up. The cost is $79 an hour with additional hours running $60 each. They also offer kayaks and paddle board rentals for a more relaxing day on the water. A variety of cruise packages are available and include luncheons, dance cruises and the fun Rockin on the River Cruise. Reservations are required, so call ahead to book your day on the water. Each cruise comes with your choice of entrée, which may include options like prime rib, chicken marsala, chicken parmesan, roasted vegetable lasagna and a salmon fillet. NEW WORLD FARE Mesa de Notte welcomes Peruvian cuisine to its menu, while still providing the same quality Italian classics that has established the restaurant as an Ocala staple.
M
esa de Notte has been preparing scratch-made Italian classics, like Lasagna, Pollo Parmigiana, Veal Marsala and Carpaccio di Manzo, for years. Recently, the restaurant has expanded its menu to include some classic Peruvian dishes and, along with that, is welcoming Chef Santiago Gomero to its team. Chef/Owner Jose Moreno has always been passionate about food that not only tastes good but that is also aesthetically pleasing. He has perfected this combination with Mesa de Notte but wanted more. “Jose has a great deal of respect for Peruvian fare and the complexities of their cuisine,” says Julian Osorno, general manager at Mesa de Notte. “Patrons will see the same flair and creativity used at Mesa de Notte applied to new dishes and ingredients. We are confident that this will enhance the dining experience for those who have frequented Mesa de Notte, just like guests that will try us for the first time.” The traditional Peruvian diet is based mainly on whole foods, mostly gluten-free ingredients and many super foods. JMARIE CHEESECAKES
LA DOLCE VITA GELATO & PASTRY
If cheesecake is your guilty pleasure, then a trip to JMarie Cheesecakes on Magnolia Avenue is a must. Let it be known that these are not your basic cheesecakes. “Our cheesecake is homemade, from crust to filling to topping,” says co-owner Rosaria Little. “The craftsmanship of flavors and intuitiveness while creating the cakes is something special.”
The husband and wife duo of Violeta and Gjon Merdita have brought some unique sweet treats to Ocala. Newly opened after a short delay due to the coronavirus, La Dolce Vita Gelato & Pastry is located in Jasmine Square on Highway 200. Just what is gelato? Violeta says it’s made with a base of 3.25 percent milk and sugar. “Gelato is churned at a much slower rate than ice cream, meaning less air is incorporated. It’s very creamy, dense and smooth, and it offers less calories and fat than other frozen desserts,” she says. In one word, it’s delicious. La Dolce will offer 12 flavors of the frozen treat, including favorites like pistachio, tiramisu, stracciatella (cream with a chocolate drizzle) and amarena (a cream and sour cherry combination).
BRUSTER’S REAL ICE CREAM
The commercial kitchen that houses JMarie Cheesecakes is open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays from 12-5pm. It’s first come, first serve, so you may benefit from preordering on their website or by phone to ensure your favorite flavor is still available for pickup. And speaking of flavors, the crew specializes in and offers about a dozen flavors each week. Sometimes a flavor of the month is thrown in for good measure. When pressed to share her favorite flavor, Rosaria settles on key lime, calling it very refreshing. Other house favorites include the layered red velvet cheesecake and strawberry shortcake cheesecake. The oreo cheesecake and peach cobbler cheesecake are also popular choices. In addition to cheesecake by the slice or whole cake (and yes, you can mix and match flavors), Rosaria, along with co-owner Sean Ree, also specializes in wedding and other special event cheesecakes. 809 N Magnolia Avenue, Ocala // (352) 2995233 // letseatfreshjmariecc.net
JT Kreuer knows a thing or two about ice cream flavors. As an ice cream maker at Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, it’s safe to say he has tried them all. And he has some favorites. “I like the basics, mint chocolate chip and oreo are old but gold,” he says. “Other really popular flavors that people choose a lot are birthday cake and butter pecan.” There are literally dozens of flavors, all made fresh daily at Bruster’s. They also offer sherbets, Italian ice, yogurts, no-sugar added flavors, vegan options, ice cream cakes and more. If you’re feeling adventurous, JT says the chocolate covered pretzel and black cherry flavors are definitely worth a shot. The cayenne chocolate chunk isn’t on the menu daily, but it’s perfect if you’re looking for something spicy and unusual. Few know this, but you can actually call ahead and special-order flavors at Brusters. You can pick it up by the pint, quart or half gallon. Bruster’s offers a convenient drive-through as well as a nicely shaded, newly remodeled patio area. The large brick wall is the perfect place to sit with friends and enjoy your sweet treat. Looking for something special? On Thursdays, bring your own banana and get half off a banana split. Although they are typically made with vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, you can go crazy and choose your own flavors as well. Then, add your toppings and the giant pretzel stick and you’re good to go. Bruster’s also offers free pup cups for your furry friends and free baby cones for the smallest guests. 2707 E Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala // (352) 622-2110 // brusters.com
Although gelato is the specialty, the offerings include so much more. Homemade pastries, seven-layer Italian rainbow cookies, black and white cookies, tiramisu and even a gelato sandwich, the Brioche Con Gelato, are on the menu. There are also gelato cannoli and crepes. And that’s just the tip of the tasty iceberg. The Merditas also offer a wonderful selection of European coffees, including Lavazza coffee and Gjon’s specialty, Café Dolce. For Violeta, it’s too difficult to choose a favorite. “Everything is made fresh, and it’s hard to pick just one favorite,” she says. “There are so many I love. My motto is ‘the sweet life is homemade.’ Everything is tasty and different. Just try it.” 6146 SW Hwy 200, Ocala // (352) 857-8080 // Find them on Facebook JUL ‘20

The Thirsty Cobbler is Ocala’s first speakeasy, and it doesn’t disappoint. The sultry, romantic ‘20s-era music and dim lighting add to the relaxed ambiance provided by the upscale décor and muted tones. This is not a typical tavern or a loud sports bar. And you won’t find typical drinks, either. The selection includes handcrafted cocktails that more often than not include six to eight ingredients—a splash of this or that. Try the Smoked Manhattan martini or the tropical, rum-based Real McCoy. With room for just about 26 patrons, The Thirsty Cobbler is the ideal nightspot for an evening of conversation and comradery. To gain entry, you need the daily password, which can be found on the speakeasy’s Facebook page each day.
Mark’s Prime wants to create a sophisticated and unique dining experience that will please the palate and soothe the soul. Mark’s Prime serves only the finest beef, freshest seafood, premium wines and a diverse stock of bourbons and scotch.
