ave you heard? Thereʼs an ongoing myth that thereʼs absolutely nothing to do in Ocala. Weʼre not sure who first coined the “Slo-cala” nickname, but we are sure about one thing: Ocalaʼs only as slow as you want it to be. With that in mind, we are excited to introduce you to the premiere issue of Ocalaʼs only entertainmentfocused magazine, 352 Preview. Thatʼs right. The answer to the question “What do you want to do this weekend?” just got a lot easier. Our new magazine will highlight some of the best events and performances happening in and around the 352 area, proving there really is plenty to do in Ocala and beyond. Whether youʼre looking for a new dining experience, a festival to visit or a way to keep the kids busy, weʼve got you covered. 352 Preview is an all-woman-owned business. Like many of you, weʼre busy, working moms. Between our careers, our home lives and our childrenʼs homework and after-school activities, we sometimes feel like thereʼs not a lot of room left on our calendars for much else. We started this magazine because we wanted to offer others a place to turn to for ideas on how to put the fun back into your routine. We hope our magazine becomes your go-to source for events, upcoming concerts, weekend trips and, yes, even ideas for the occasional date night. Each month 352 Preview is direct-mailed to 10,000 Marion County homes on a rotating basis. And although it may arrive at your doorstep one month and not the next, 352 Preview—in its digital, flip-through

Photo courtesy of The Villages Polo Club, Source: caminorealpolo.com

We spoke with Paige McCabe, director of polo with The Villages Polo Club (TVPC), to get all the info you need to know before heading out to the field. Who are the players at TVPC? The players come from all over the world. We have players from Argentina, England, Barbados and all over the United States. Whatʼs the atmosphere like at TVPC? We have a divot stomp with each match, and tailgating is a big hit here at our club. The atmosphere is very lively. A lot of folks come in their golf cart to tailgate and have a blast. What should spectators wear? We are an outdoor venue and suggest everyone come in comfortable clothing. Some choose to wear dresses and fancy hats, while others come in jeans or shorts.

Are children welcome? We have children at every match with their parents and grandparents, and they have a great time interacting with the horses and players. Whatʼs one thing you wish people knew about polo, especially if they have never been to a match before? Polo is a sport everyone can enjoy, no matter your age or status. Our spectators have a great time visiting with our players and horses on the sidelines and even getting a polo ball autographed by their favorites. The Villages Polo Club // 703 N. Buena Vista Blvd., The Villages, FL // (352) 750-7656 // thevillagespoloclub.com // Visit the website for tournament dates in October and November.

hy do bats get such a bad rap? Brian Pope, director of the Lubee Bat Conservancy in Gainesville, says itʼs because these marvelous creatures are misunderstood. “If weʼre talking about a mammal that does the most for humans in terms of ecoservices, then no other animal comes close to the bat,” he says. Consider the bat natureʼs do-gooder. On any given night one small bat may eat hundreds of insects—mosquitos are a favorite. If that wasnʼt reason enough to show bats some respect, they are also master pollinators and work hard to spread seeds. And for three decades the professionals at the Lubee Bat Conservancy have been working to educate the public, implement conservation and preservation efforts, and conduct field research around the world, including current projects near Madagascar and Australia. “Lubee began as a private entity to focus on endangered and threatened species,” says Brian. “The facility originally had many types of animals, but the founder had a special interest in bats. After he passed in 1991, we made the decision to focus on the animal he loved so much.” Situated on 100 acres in Alachua County, Lubee houses 13 species of bats, including giant fruit bats and those native to Central Florida. Over the years, the conservancy has educated nearly 200,000 people through education and outreach programs, including the popular annual Florida Bat Festival. Now in its 15th year, this yearʼs festival is scheduled for October 26. “We love seeing how this festival grows each year,” Brian says. “This year we have more vendors, more food, prize

“This is a chance to come face to face with and learn about some of the world’s most amazing bats, including the world’s largest bats. When I hear the positive comments from people, I know we are doing something right.” drawings, live music, a beer garden and an entire field dedicated to childrenʼs activities, including bounce houses and games. Of course, the main draw is still the bats. This is a chance to come face to face with and learn about some of the worldʼs most amazing bats, including the worldʼs largest bats. When I hear the positive comments from people, I know we are doing something right.” According to Brian, people are always surprised to see how cute and playful bats are, too. Eleven fruit bats, native to Asia, were recently born at Lubee, and they stay busy playing with toys, vocalizing and interacting with their siblings and mom. Brian says they always put on a great show for visitors, and theyʼre sure to be a highlight at this yearʼs event. Another highlight is the colony of native bats at Lubee, including OCT ‘19

a big role in letting people know why bats are necessary.” To take a small step toward remedying that habitat issue, Lubee has been constructing and installing bat houses for years, and they recently erected their 56th house. “We have a 90 percent occupancy rate in our houses,” Brian says. “They provide safe, secure roosting areas for several bat species.” Brian says there are also other, smaller steps homeowners can take to provide an attractive home for bats. “If you can, leave a portion of your land untouched. Thatʼs not only good for bats but other animals as well,” he says. “If you have palm trees and the dead fronds arenʼt a safety hazard, leave them hanging—bats like them. The same is true of dead trees as long as they arenʼt a safety hazard. One of the best ways to appreciate the bat is to

educate yourself and understand these animals. “I just want people to appreciate bats,” Brian adds. “They never cease to amaze me. There is no other animal like them. The conservancy is open to the public, and we invite you to come out and take a tour.”

Big Brown Bats, Evening Bats and Southeastern Bats. “A year and a half ago, we rescued these animals from an organization in Michigan and gave them a home at Lubee,” Brian says. “They are fantastic for educational purposes. Itʼs wonderful to be able to see bats up close that are native to your own backyard.” One mission behind the Lubee Bat Conservatory is to take these animals and shed some light on why they are so important to humans. “A study by the U.S. Geological Survey concluded that bats save U.S. farmers between $3.7 and 53 billion annually just by eating insects,” says Brian. “Consider them natureʼs natural pest control. The batʼs plight is a rough one. They are persecuted in some countries, and deforestation is eliminating their natural habitats. Lubee has played

An Awesome AXE-PERIENCE If you would have told Lonnie Blackburn that attending a family wedding in Missouri would change the trajectory of his life, he’d have likely said you were crazy. A chance trip to an axe-throwing business, though, did just that. // B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y

“F

or 30 years we ran Motocross of Marion County,” says the division chief for Marion County Fire Rescue. “Once that closed, we were looking for a new adventure. As soon as I waked into the axe-throwing place, I knew that was it.” Lonnie and his wife, Linda, a local attorney, drove to the Missouri wedding, and they spent the return trip home formulating a business and marketing plan for their new venture: The Firehouse Urban Axe Throwing. You read that right. Axe throwing. Oh, and knife and star throwing, too. And let me tell you, itʼs a good time. If your date nights consist of dinner and a movie, you may want to think about upping the ante a bit. At Firehouse Urban Axe Throwing you can spend an hour, or two even, throwing axes at a target of your choice. The Blackburns are constantly rebuilding the targets, and they go through about 120 feet of specially ordered white spruce each week. Firehouse is a family-owned and -operated business with the Blackburnsʼ eldest children helping run the place. Derek, the general manager, is more a brother than an employee. Each visit starts with a waiver because, you know, axes are involved. Then, after a quick instructional lesson, youʼre off. Lonnie is proud to say he hasnʼt had anyone he couldnʼt get to stick an axe. There are a variety of axes to choose from, but the standard throwing axe

weighs just 1.5 pounds and is rather easy to throw. Sticking it, however, may take a few reps. Customers can choose from a friendly game to a full-on competition with rules. Scoreboards are available if youʼre the type to keep score. For those really into throwing axes, leagues are up and running, and the next openings will be in January. They also host birthday parties, team building events and other gatherings. And theyʼll come to you, too. The atmosphere at Firehouse Urban Axe Throwing is laid back and casual. Music fills the air, and soon the big game will be on the flat screen. Itʼs not a big place, but thatʼs part of the charm for sure. If you need to eat, Formaggioʼs Pizza and Italian Restaurant is right next door, and youʼre welcome to bring your pie into the facility with you. If youʼre looking for a way to entertain the kids, this is it. If your kid is old enough to follow directions, theyʼre old enough to throw stars. They can even play a game of rock, paper scissors or tic-tac-toe with the stars. “Itʼs cool to see people come in who may be apprehensive about throwing an axe,” Lonnie says, “then they are sticking axes left and right. Itʼs a good workout, itʼs a lot of fun and itʼs cheaper than therapy.” The Firehouse Urban Axe Throwing // 1043 NE 14th Street, Ocala // (352) 304-5172 // axethrowingocala.com

The Tom Petty Birthday Bash, happening October 19-20 in Gainesville’s Depot Park, brings fans together to honor the life and music of one of our area’s most-beloved musicians.

R

ock legend and Gainesville-native Tom Petty has always been known as a hometown kid. He was, after all, born and raised there, and all the original members of his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, hailed from the town as well. It wasnʼt a surprise then when, after his unexpected death on October 2, 2017, his local fans came together to celebrate the music he left behind. Just three weeks after his death, around what would have been the musicianʼs 67th birthday, Jason Hedges—also a Gainesville native and front man of the Tom Petty tribute band Heavy Petty—organized the first Tom Petty Birthday Bash. The event brought together 2,500 fans for a six-hour show of all Petty tunes. Keeping with the sentiment, last yearʼs event grew exponentially. The second annual birthday bash developed into a full-fledged music festival,

// B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N bringing in over 8,000 fans. This yearʼs event showcases more than 20 top regional and national bands over two days. Thereʼs also plenty to do in between sets, as the Bash will also feature live art, food vendors, beer and wine, and a kidsʼ area. Youʼre also free to explore the 32-acre Depot Park area or walk to nearby bars, breweries and restaurants in downtown Gainesville. “This festival isnʼt just a tribute to Tom Petty. Itʼs also a tribute to Gainesville, a vibrant music town that nurtures and celebrates musicians and the arts,” says Sarah Hedges, volunteer marketing director— and also Jasonʼs wife. “We are showcasing the best of Gainesville with local food and art vendors. We will also have some awesome, never-before-seen Tom Petty memorabilia displayed throughout the festival.” Although tickets are free, you can upgrade

your experience with one of the Petty For The People Packages. With these packages, come great perks, including awesome swag, exclusive shaded areas and parking passes. Ticket packages and purchases at the event benefit the UF Shands Arts in Medicine program. Beyond the typical music festival scene, attendees can expect to gain an appreciation for—if not fall in love with—Tom Pettyʼs music. Itʼs what makes this event so special. “Tomʼs music seems to have a profound impact on people,” says Sarah. “Thereʼs a song for every mood. I love that you can feel the energy from the crowd. Happiness and love are all around you. Itʼs really quite magical.” Tom Petty Birthday Bash // Depot Park, Gainesville // Oct. 19-20 // tompettybirthdaybash.com // Attendance is free, VIP and parking packages available. OCT ‘19

Adrenaline Rush The Santos trailhead includes more than 80 miles of bike trails for beginners as well as expert-level riders. Have you been yet?

“T

he trails are beautiful and refreshing,” says local mom and Santos enthusiast Jessica Noon. She frequents the trails with her husband and 13- and 11-year-old sons. “It really doesnʼt feel like youʼre in Ocala. The boys love it so much that the whole family has gotten involved—even their 4-year-old sister.” Named one of the nationʼs few Scenic National Trails (We are in good company with the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Rim.), you owe it to yourself to fully explore the Cross Florida Greenway, particularly the Santos trailhead. This time of year, the weather is perfect, so no excuses. If youʼre making the trek with youngsters, Jessica recommends starting with the pump trails. “There are hills and wooden obstacles to build skills. While the kids ride and practice, parents are able to sit and see the whole area; itʼs a good starting point. We also enjoy 20

// B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y the Pinetree Course as a family, an easier green course. “The wooded trails are so invigorating,” Jessica adds. “Riding feeds your soul and makes you feel revived,” she says. Once your young riders have a little experience under their belts, Jessica recommends the blue Bryar Patch course. “Itʼs downhill and through woods,” she says. “Thereʼs a hammock to ride over, and it gets the adrenaline pumping.” For advanced riders, there is no challenge like the Vortex Freeride area. Located in a former lime rock quarry, the extreme terrain is a stark comparison to Floridaʼs usually flat landscape. If you donʼt have bikes, no worries. Several nearby bike shops offer rentals for all ages. “We offer 20-inch bikes for the little ones on up to extra-large bikes for rent,” says Kymm Missick of Santos Bike Shop. “At $30 a day for hardtail bikes and $50-60 a day for full suspension bikes, itʼs beneficial to rent a bike

before making the commitment to purchase. Try out the sport, and see if itʼs for you. If you do decide to purchase, we apply our rental fee to the purchase of a bike.” Call it a win-win. Developed and maintained through a partnership with the volunteer-based Ocala Mountain Bike Association, Santos is constantly rated as one of the best mountain bike facilities there is. “The Santos trails are very impressive,” agrees Jessica. “We have visited many trail systems on our travels. The ones right here in our own backyard are quite special.” Santos Trailhead // Visit floridastateparks.org and search for Santos. // For added fun and instruction, check out the Florida DEVO XC Mountain Bike Junior Development group Monday evenings from 5:30-7pm during the school year. ANF Gyros and Grill

2400 SW 19th Ave, Ocala (352) 237-7376 The first ANF Gyros opened in 2009 in nearby Winter Haven. Today, there are two additional Orlando locations and the fourth location in Ocala. Youʼll love the Philly steaks, juicy burgers, authentic Cuban, fish, oysters and shrimp. The star of the show, though, is the gyros. This popular Greek dish is served on a pita and loaded with your choice of meat and toppings, including the tasty Tzatziki sauce. An added bonus? ANF is open late, until 2am (Friday and Saturday, 4am!), to satisfy your late-night snack attacks. Visit anf-gyros.com for a complete menu, and find them on Facebook.
