World-Class Competition This month, the 950-acre Ocala Jockey Club will play host to some of our nation’s top eventing equestrian riders. The Ocala Jockey Club International 3-Day Event serves as the Southeast’s only qualifying competition for the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.
T
he event showcases dressage, show jumping and cross country competitions ridden by the same horse and rider combination over the course of the weekend. Riders will be judged on four levels of competition, with newly reassigned star system designations, including the Olympic qualifying levels, CC14*-L and CC14*-S. “Itʼs not every day you get Olympic-level competition in Marion County,” says Ocala Jockey Club President and CoOwner Pavla Nygaard. “To watch this level of competition in any sport is very special.” This is the OJCʼs fourth year hosting its 3-Day eventing competition, and it has already garnered big acclaim, winning the 10

// B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y 2018 Florida Sports Foundationʼs Small Market Event of the Year award. Part of the reason the Jockey Club is so successful, according to Nygaard, is because of the farmʼs location and footing. “The course designer, who has created a number of toplevel competitions, says that our property is among the best in the United States,” she says. “Competitors look at that. It helps horses do difficult, challenging courses. If a course is hard on a horse, itʼs difficult for the horse and rider to perform at their highest level. Our topography is beautiful. It doesnʼt really look like Central Florida. Our area looks more like an English countryside, with its sloping tracks and gently rolling hills.
“From the clubhouse, spectators have a 270-degree view of much of the cross country competition,” adds Nygaard. “One of the iconic jumps goes through the pond right near the clubhouse. Spectators may also choose to tailgate (on Saturday) or set up tents to enjoy the cross country competition.” And although this event is mostly about the horses, thereʼs so much more to take in as well. Check out the family-friendly festival, vendors, a beer garden offering signature drinks, demonstrations and live entertainment. This yearʼs event supports the local Boys & Girls Clubs of Marion County. “We have a lot of great activities planned for the weekend and are excited to be a part of the event,”
says Laura McCormick, health and wellness coordinator for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Marion County. “We will be hanging out in the official Kidsʼ Zone with some fun things lined up to keep the little ones busy. There will be a bounce house, face painting, dirt to play in, hay to climb on and more. Make sure to stop by and say hi to learn more about the Boys & Girls Clubs of Marion County.” “Itʼs a wonderful family event,” Nygaard agrees. “Come and spend the day in the country behind the gates of one of Marion Countyʼs historic farms.” Ocala Jockey Club International 3-Day Event // Reddick // November 14-17, 2019 // ojc3de.com

Inconceivable! The Princess Bride shadowcast comes to Ocala’s Reilly Arts Center. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N
I
f you havenʼt seen it (but, I mean, who hasnʼt), The Princess Bride, released in 1987, is an adventure comedy film about Westley, his travels and the characters he meets during his quest to rescue Princess Buttercup from Prince Humperdinck. Adapted from William Goldmanʼs 1973 novel of the same name, the film was a modest success when it was first released but has since become a cult classic of sorts among a newer generation and was inducted into the National Film Registry in 2016. Hailed as one of the most “quotable” movies ever made, itʼs no surprise the Reilly Arts Center has chosen The Princess Bride as its next shadowcast production. So what is a shadowcast? During a shadowcast, the film is shown on a screen while the actors on stage try their best to mimic the action happening in the movie. And yes, usually, hilarity ensues as the actors are often put in situations that are nearly impossible to reenact. Fortunately, the Reilly is no novice to producing shadowcasts. They have previously held viewings of Jaws, Jurassic Park and Willy Wonka. The Princess Bride shadowcast is happening Friday, November 22 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $8 for students and can be purchased at reillyartscenter.com.
Did You Know? The Princess Bride Trivia
The chemistry between Robin Wright (Buttercup) and Cary Elwes (Westly) was real during the filming of the movies. (Weʼre all giving a collective ʻawwwʼ over here.)
Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya) said in an interview that his most famous line from The Princess Bride (“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”) gets quoted back to him by several strangers each day.
In order to create their famous swordfight, Cary Elwes (Westly) and Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya) trained for months with former Olympians and stuntmen who worked on the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie and Star Wars films.
William Goldman, author of the novel and the screenplay, told Entertainment Weekly that the book was written for his two daughters, with one wanting him to write about “a princess” and the other about “a bride.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger was being considered for the role of Fezzik when the novel was almost made into a movie in the 1970s. André the Giant was ultimately cast for the role.

Before you head out for the day, spend a little time exploring the Young Artists Courtyard in front of City Hall, where artists between the ages of 7 and 18 set up shop to showcase and sell their own art. These artists had to apply to be accepted into the festival and will have everything from paintings and drawings to jewelry and photography for you to purchase. Imagine being the first buyer of an original art piece from a potentially future famous artist! After youʼve explored the festival-lined streets, your next to-do is to head over to the Hoggetowne Creamery for a bit of ice cream—and we donʼt want you to think about calories even once. And I make all the ice cream, sorbet and dairy-free ice cream right here in house.” If you donʼt think youʼll be able to explore the festival in just one day (or you plan to have one too many of those fudgesicles), make a weekend of it and book a few rooms at one of the hotels that have partnered with the festival. Real Florida Fun There’s nothing quite like a cold glass of fresh-squeezed Florida orange juice on a relaxed weekend morning. And it doesn’t get any fresher than if you squeeze it yourself. To help you along with that, the friendly folks at the Showcase of Citrus in nearby Clermont offer an enjoyable day of family excitement and Florida fun, complete with orange picking. // B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y

alking into the Old Time Country Store it feels like taking a step back into old Florida. Shelves of citrus fruit, all varieties, line the walls, along with a fantastic selection of locally made, small batch products, including sauces, jellies and jams, salsa, dressings, sweet treats, local honey, farm fresh eggs and more. The smell of citrus lingers in the air, and the setting is serene and quiet. Just beyond the store is where youʼll embark on a journey like no other. The 4x4 adventure monster trucks are huge at 16-feet tall. Youʼll get a birdʼs eye view as your guide travels over 2,500 acres through orange groves, pastureland and swamps. Along the way youʼll learn a bit of history on the family-owned and -operated Showcase of Citrus. You may even learn a new Florida fact or two. The hour-long trip promises to be exciting but not jarring. When the rideʼs over and itʼs time to stretch your legs, head to the gem mining station where youʼll use a real sluice box to search for a variety of treasures, including sharkʼs teeth, fossils, gems, crystals and more. Just hold the box in the running water and move it back and forth. Three-, five-

More than 50 varieties of citrus are available for picking, and you can mix and match your favorites. The fruit is at its best and sweetest between November and May. If youʼd rather someone else do all the work, pre-picked fruit is available for purchase as well. If you brought the kids, you may want to head to feed the farm animals. Who doesnʼt love goats, chickens and pigs? The farm is even home to a mini horse and a kangaroo. If you left the kids with a sitter, take advantage of the free wine tastings. The wine, beer and mimosa selection has been expanded to include a great variety of local options. The Showcase of Citrus signature drink is The Eclipse, a combo of dark champagne and fresh-squeezed OJ. They also offer dozens of unique flavors, including orange blossom honey wine or the cocoa beach wine, a blend of specialty Florida OJ and rich chocolate. onʼt let the word tavern fool you. The GenX Tavern, situated in downtown Tampa just off Riverwalk, is far more than a place to grab a drink. This full-service restaurant and bar is more an immersive experience. Three years in the making, the GenX Tavern is owner Dave Burtonʼs newest success. “We have been planning the GenX Tavern for years, just waiting for the right time, the right location. Itʼs really been a passion project,” says Director of Operations Larissa Pepe. “We had to find a place that would suit both the lunchtime and the nighttime crowd, plus be large enough to house all our ideas. A good happy hour was also required. The ʻ80s- and ʻ90s-themed décor is quite the conversation starter, and the first thing you see upon entering the GenX Tavern is a giant mural that features more than 115 pop culture references to two of the greatest decades ever. We promise you wonʼt be able to find them all. A nearby trophy case, made with recycled gym floor wood, is filled with ʻ80s and ʻ90s memorabilia, from yearbooks and VHS tapes to Pog and Garbage Pail Kids. Feeling nostalgic yet? Take a look at the impressive sculpture over the bar area and youʼll notice that itʼs a giant Kerplunk game thatʼs holding the bottles and glassware in place. The bartop LED lights add fun to the already cool vibe. “The ʻ80s and ʻ90s were a time that many of us look back on very fondly,” says Larissa. “We wanted to really pay homage to that era and bring back some great memories for people.” The 6,000-square-foot tavern is open daily at 11am and is very family friendly, according to Larissa. Stop by for lunch or dinner and enjoy the tongue in cheek names on the menu. Maybe the build-your-own MacGyver Burger or the Underhill Steak Sandwich will appeal to you. What about the Griswoldʼs BBQ Grilled Chicken? For dessert, try the deconstructed Pop Tart ice cream sandwich or some Dunkaroos, animal crackers with a sweet confetti dip. On Sunday, the tavern is open for brunch. “Our menu has something for everyone, from healthy and vegetarian fare to burgers and more. We arenʼt the veto vote,” says Larissa. If youʼre looking for a private place to party with friends, there are two themed rooms available for rent. Maybe on game day? A bank of 25 refurbished old TVs work in unison and are double stacked and line one wall. You control the remotes and a Nintendo and VHS player are available. Whatʼs your favorite ʻ80s film? They probably have it. Evenings, the tavern comes to life. On Thursday nights, a DJ spins all your favorite throwback tunes. Try an adult Capri Sun, always fresh and made in house. Flavors include pineapple, cherry lime and kiwi. Thereʼs also an adult Sunny D on the menu—one of Larissaʼs personal favorites. Remember Tang? They have that, too—in the form of a margarita. Also, the Rock Candy Watermelon cocktail with pop rocks sounds like one you have to try. Growing up were the white mystery Airheads your favorite? If so, the Mystery White Airhead shot will leave you guessing the flavors. “This place is all about nostalgia and fun,” says Larissa. “Recognize that weʼve given our best interpretation of the ʻ80s and ʻ90s. If we missed a reference this time around, we are always changing and rotating our memorabilia. Weʼre all ears and love to hear suggestions, too. Some days I walk into work and think, ʻMan, this place is cool.ʼ” We bet you will, too. THE GENX TAVERN // 103 E Jackson St., Tampa // genxtavern.com NOV ‘19

hen you walk into the Arcade Bar in Gainesville youʼre greeted by the sounds of old-school games. Remember racing home from school to play Pac-Man, Paperboy or Centipede? Seems that these classics never go out of style. At the Arcade Bar you get to be a kid again. With three stories of fun and entertainment, it just may become your new favorite hangout destination—but only for the 21 and up crowd. The exposed brick wall gives the three-story bar a decidedly downtown feel, while comfortable seating is scattered throughout the complex. The first floor houses the classics. The music is low so conversation isnʼt strained. The tropical vibe adds to the relaxed atmosphere. The second floor is open to the first and features a large balcony space. The third floor, though, thatʼs where youʼll find the main bar and the skee ball machines—a customer favorite, according to Marketing Manager Vijay Seixas. As a matter of fact, the bar hosts a skee ball league and is even part of the circuit for qualifying for the national championships. “Some people take their skee ball and pinball pretty seriously,” laughs Vijay. “During the week we are kind of like a grown-up Dave & Busterʼs. On Friday and Saturday nights, though, the video games become less of a priority, and we transform into more of a college dance bar. Of course, if youʼre going for the games, and maybe a drink or two, thereʼs guaranteed to be something you like. With more than 50 machines, some of which are multi-cade machines, the options are practically endless. Vijay grew up playing Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64, so heʼs partial to the James Bond games or Mario Kart. He also says that Killer Queen, a 10-player experience, and Buck Hunt are also very popular. “This is just one of a few Killer Queen games in Florida,” says Vijay, “so itʼs a rare treat.” The owners, Scott Shillington and Hal Mendez, have been collecting the games over the years. The duo also owns multiple other nearby establishments, including The Top restaurant across the street and The Atlantic, a venue for live music. On weekend nights, the patio is open and guests can wander between the locations, enjoying a little of everything. At the Arcade Bar, thereʼs never a cover charge. Vijay recommends his favorite drink, the Purple Rain. Itʼs a blend of Bacardi syrup, lavender simple syrup and lime juice. Other favorites include the Careless Whisper and the Fresh Prince. f there ever was a restaurant to indulge in dessert first, the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen at Universal Studiosʼ City Walk would be it. Just to the right inside the entrance is a magnificent candy and goodies store. Chocolates of all different shapes and colors sit just behind the glass case begging to be sampled. We promise youʼll feel just like a kid in, well, a candy store. If you just canʼt decide, a sampler box is the way to go. The confectionary serves up some additional sweets in the form of crepes, milkshakes and sundaes. If youʼre feeling daring, go for the bacon brittle or espresso buzzzz shake. Our favorite, though, is the chocolate banana brain freeze. Plus thereʼs ice cream, cupcakes and brownies. Pop in, grab a treat and be on your way lickety split. If you can stay a while, though, then youʼre in for a real treat. The Emporium features two stories of delectable goodness, each with its own main dining room. Off to the sides, youʼll find additional, smaller dining rooms with large windows for a brighter dining experience. Belleview resident Paul Duurloo recently made the trek to Universal with his family, and they stopped at the Toothsome Emporium for an early dinner. “This is a really cool place,” he says. “The whole

he Tipsy Skipper, slated to open later this month, is sure to become one of Ocalaʼs new favorite nighttime hangouts. Located next to the Marion Theatre on Magnolia Avenue downtown, the concept is a 1950s-style tiki bar, and owner Buck Martin paid close attention to the details when creating the space. Walking into The Tipsy Skipper, the 1950s seem to come to life. The living room-style front room features retro furniture, comfortable pillows, classic movie posters and unique accents that lend to the island ambiance. Itʼs a place to gather and laugh with friends after a hectic work day. Just beyond the curtain is the bar area, complete with a handmade, nautical-themed bar counter. The shipping crates that make up the bar look as though theyʼve recently washed ashore. The convenient purse hooks on the underside of the bar are designed to look like octopus tentacles and are super handy for getting your bag out of the way and off the floor. “We have a very date-night vibe,” says Martin. “The bar is dimly lit, and there are plenty of candles. What we are offering is an escape from the norm, a little something different.” The hand-picked drink menu will feature rotating and seasonal handcrafted cocktails made from only medium- to top-shelf liquor. There will even be secret menu items hidden throughout the town. “You may find coordinates or pictures on our social media sites or website that will direct you to places where we hide ʻtreasures,ʼ” says Martin. “Maybe there will be a discount, free drink coupons, tickets to an event, new or mystery menu items and more.”
And speaking of menu items, Martin says there will be no inferior drinks or ingredients at The Tipsy Skipper. “All syrups are handmade, and all juices are hand squeezed,” he says. Food and outdoor seating are both planned for the future. The LED lights are controlled by remote and can change colors individually to set the mood of choice. Behind the bar, the wooden crates add to the nautical theme and serve as the perfect storage space for bottles and glassware. And then thereʼs the mugs. Forget the plain glasses or throwaway drinkware. Martinʼs collection of island-inspired cups and mugs is second to none. From tikis and pineapples to coconuts and sharks, they are a definite conversation starter. The big screen over the bar plays retro movies— think Tarzan, Creature From the Black Lagoon and Godzilla, and exotica and surfer rock music add to the intimate ambiance. Just like the tiki bars of earlier generations, Martin agrees with a popular sentiment. “If you canʼt get to paradise, weʼll bring paradise to you.” THE TIPSY SKIPPER // 48 S Magnolia Ave., Ocala // thetipsyskipperocala.com
family found the décor and atmosphere very entertaining.” The steampunk theme is taken to the next level with industrial-style lights, dim lighting, smokestacks, gears and cogs. Itʼs just as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the stomach. People in character, including Jacques the Robot, circulate throughout the dining rooms, posing for pictures and making jokes. The menu is huge. And we mean huge. There will be no trouble finding something for each member of your party. The libations menu is a great place to start, and it should be no surprise that chocolate plays a starring role in several of the drinks. The Chocolate Cherry Mule includes double chocolate vodka, brandied cherry, chocolate bitters and ginger beer. And thatʼs just one option. There are plenty of non-chocolately drinks, too! The eats menu includes temptations (appetizers), flatbreads, salads and soups, sandwiches, entrées, burgers and pasta. Oh, and did we mention there is an all-day brunch menu for those of us who prefer French toast or quiche to more typical lunch or dinner fare. Duurloo opted for the croque monsieur. The piled-high sandwich consisted of country ham, Gruyere cheese, French loaf toasted and grilled, then topped with bechamel sauce. The verdict? “Iʼd order it again,” he says. A MISSION OF PRESERVATION An interview with Eric Draper, Florida Park Service Director Q. HOW DO CAMPERS AND VISITORS TO THE PARKS HELP THE PARK SYSTEM WITH ITS MISSION TO PRESERVE THE PARKS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS?
Every park visit or camping trip helps support what we do. Park entrance and camping fees fund the protection of wildlife and habitat, educational programs and facility maintenance. Park visitors can practice “leave no trace” to minimize impact on natural resources. We also have an incredible community of volunteers and friendsʼ groups that help serve visitors, fight invasive plants, take care of campgrounds and much more. Volunteering at our parks is a rewarding experience—you can sign up at FloridaStateParks.org/Volunteers. Q. WHAT SPECIAL PROGRAMS DO YOU HAVE TO INTRODUCE KIDS TO THE PARKS SYSTEM?
Rangers regularly host kid-friendly programs and events both inside and outside parks. You can visit FloridaStateParks.org/Events to find nearby opportunities. We also have a great junior ranger program, which is a fun way for kids to learn about Floridaʼs natural and cultural resources. The region between Gainesville and Ocala is home to beautiful freshwater springs and other geological wonders, as well as wetlands and forests that are havens for imperiled wildlife. Parks such as Silver Springs State Park, Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and Devilʼs Millhopper Geological State Park protect some of the best examples of Florida diverse landscapes. Preserving these great places, parks, trails and public lands strengthens communities, supports economies and provides a wide array of recreational activities to stay active and healthy. 28

PAYNES PRAIRIE PRESERVE STATE PARK ROSS PRAIRIE TRAILHEAD & CAMPGROUND // DUNNELLON
This area, along the east side of State Road 200 and on the southern boundary of the Cross Florida Greenway, is an ecologically unique space, with sandhill and wetland prairie systems adjacent to each other, so expect to see lots of wildlife on your visit, including whitetail deer, wild turkey, bobcat, alligators in the prairie and gopher tortoises in the sandhills. The trail system offers options for equestrian riders, hikers and mountain bikers. The 14 campsites have water and electric hookups. PAYNES PRAIRIE PRESERVE STATE PARK // MICANOPY
Nowhere else in Florida can you find wild-roaming bison and horses. And thereʼs lots of other wildlife, too, including more than 300 species of birds, deer and alligators. (They call UF ʻThe Swampʼ for a reason.) Make sure you take the hike to the 50-foot-high observation tower offering panoramic views. Just south of Gainesville, the campground is near Lake Wauburg, where you can fish and canoe. The sites are heavily shaded and feature electric and water hookups. The park offers lots of family-friendly events, specifically for campers. Our family loved the ranger-led campfire program and the opportunity to learn more about the prairieʼs ecosystem. MANATEE SPRINGS STATE PARK // CHIEFLAND
Winter is the perfect time to visit this park, as some of our favorite Florida wildlife visits when the air temperatures are cooler: manatees! The animals are drawn in by the constant 72-degree water in this firstmagnitude spring. Take a stroll along the 800-foot boardwalk that winds NOV ‘19

and another on the river side along the Intercoastal. The beach campground offers dune walkovers for easy access to the beach. Take note that the beach campsites tend to be on the smaller side, and the road in front of the campsites is narrow, making it difficult for larger RVs to access. All sites feature electric and water hookups. BLUE SPRING STATE PARK // ORANGE CITY
Blue Spring is another winter haven for manatees, so definitely plan your visit during cooler months when hundreds of these mammals are staying warm in the temperature-constant water that empties out into the St. Johns River. During the summer, the spring is open to swimmers and for tubing. Be aware that this park is very popular during both winter and summer, so visit the park early in the day and during the week, if possible. The 51-site campground sits in a sand pine scrub environment and welcomes tent campers as well as RVs up to 40 feet. All sites have electric and water hookups. You can walk to the spring, but itʼs a bit farther than the website would have you believe, especially with kids, so plan to drive to the parking area or bring bicycles.
through the cypress swamp from the spring to the Suwannee River. Pro tip: If itʼs a cold day, it will be even colder down by the river, so make sure to dress appropriately. The larger, three-loop campground is a short walk to the spring area, and the sites have electric and water hookups.
WORTH THE DRIVE Tried all the parks close to home? These parks might be a little farther, but theyʼre big on fun. TOMOKA STATE PARK // ORMOND BEACH
Tomoka State Park is a paddling paradise. The rivers and tributaries running along the park are
part of the Tomoka River Paddling Trail and are accessible via the parkʼs boat ramp. Itʼs advisable to stick to the rivers, creeks and marshlands, as the Tomoka Basin, a large, open body of water can get rough on windy days. Fishing is also a popular recreation in the park, and canoes and kayaks are available to rent. This campground is best for tent campers or smaller RVs, and each of the sites have electric and water hookups. GAMBLE ROGERS MEMORIAL STATE RECREATION AREA // FLAGLER BEACH
If youʼre looking for a beach getaway, Gamble Rogers is literally just a few steps away from the Atlantic shoreline. A1A splits this park in half, with one campground on the beach side
GET THE STAMP One of my familyʼs must-do activities when visiting any national or state park is to stamp our passport. Just like a passport stamp you might receive when visiting a foreign country, all national and Florida state parks have a unique stamp. Usually found in the visitorʼs center, these
SUWANNEE RIVER STATE PARK // LIVE OAK
Thereʼs hardly anything more uniquely Florida than paddling down the old Suwannee River. This park is a great place for kids of all ages to learn about the history of our great state. Rather than read about it indoors, interpretative signs at the park and along the trails help uncover the history of this area. Both the Suwannee and Withlacoochee Rivers are accessible by boat ramp in the park; however, canoe and kayak rentals are not available in the park. Rental options are available nearby. Electric, water and sewer hookups are available to tent campers and RVs up to 45 feet.
stamps are the way we as a family track where weʼve visited. I could tell you a funny story about my husband (whoʼs a bit obsessed with stamping our passport) racing through the Petrified Forest National Park (as fast as the speed limit would allow, of course) to get the stamp before the visitorʼs center closed for the day, but itʼs a sore spot for him from our
trip out West. (We did make it in time for the stamp though!) In Florida, you can purchase the Real Florida Passport online or at most parks. Simply stop by the visitorʼs center and ask the volunteer or ranger where their stamps are located. Have fun—and obey the speed limit! Learn more at floridastateparks.org/ EveryStampisaStory.

A Sweet Treat The Doughnut Hole offers up unique flavor combinations along with some tasty classics. Go ahead, feed your sweet tooth. // W R I T T E N A N D PHOTOGRAPHED BY KARIN F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y

he scent of sweet doughnuts hangs in the air outside the bright pink building on N Magnolia Avenue. Inside, Manager Rhonda Kincaid and her crew have been busy since 3am, mixing, frying, glazing and decorating. “We do not do day-old doughnuts here,” says Rhonda. “If there are leftovers, they are given to various shelters, churches or soup kitchens.” The Doughnut Hole has been open for just a bit over a year now. Owned by the same family that owns the Magnolia Bakery, the doughnut shop is located right next door.
If thereʼs one thing The Doughnut Hole is known for itʼs their unique flavor combinations and toppings. Thereʼs no official menu because the flavors change daily. On this particular day the sʼmores doughnut, topped with a

marshmallow coated in crushed graham crackers looks especially good. Or maybe the junior mint chocolate doughnut with its mint frosting, whip cream center and Peppermint Patty topping. The maple bacon doughnut is always a favorite as well. And the kids love the Fruity Pebbles flavor. Rhondaʼs favorite? The cherry cheesecake. If you want to know whatʼs in store each day, check out their Facebook page. The flavors are posted daily. “My favorite part of what I do is getting to be creative,” says Rhonda. “Sometimes I Google todayʼs national day to get ideas or walk through the grocery store and think, ʻHey, I can put that on top of a doughnut.ʼ” Although most doughnut shops only have the basics covered, like glazed, filled or frosted, Rhonda goes a step beyond, infusing her doughnuts with flavored oils to make them both tasty and memorable. Root beer, strawberry, butterscotch and piña colada are just a few of the options. “Whipped in with homemade frosting, itʼs delicious,” Rhonda says. “There are no preservatives in anything we make, and we donʼt use any peanuts or peanut butter in the facility.” Of course, if doughnuts arenʼt you speed, you may opt for a Danish or puffed pastry. The selection is at its best on Fridays when the shop is open until 10pm. Perfect for couples or families enjoying dinner downtown and looking for a nearby, unique dessert. While there, try the new cold brewed coffee. Itʼs quickly becoming a customer favorite. “We use the Good Morning Gainesville coffee from the Sweetwater Organic Coffee Co. just to our north,” Rhonda says. “The coffee is brewed with Alphapure water for 14 hours before served.” Itʼs the perfect addition to your tasty treat. Banking On Fun Bank Street Patio Bar & Grill opens in downtown Ocala—and it was worth the wait. // W R I T T E N A N D P H O T O G R A P H E D B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N

owntown Ocala is thriving. New shops and restaurants are popping up on the regular. Fun, family-friendly events pack the square and Citizensʼ Circle. And who would have thought weʼd see a multi-story hotel being built in the heart of our town. One of the newest restaurants to make its way downtown has created a ton of buzz—and for good reason. Bank Street Patio Bar & Grill, which opened for guests in midOctober, has a super cool vibe, and the mostly outdoor seating area, complete with sun sails for daytime lunches and string lights for nighttime drinks, is perfect for the cooler winter days ahead of us. I visited with my family for lunch and can honestly say there was something to satisfy everyone, from the choices on the menu to entertainment while waiting for your meal. My favorite part of our first visit was exploring all the different seating areas. Itʼs such a large area! There are picnic tables and seating under an awning in comfy chairs with fluffy pillows. The adult-only, indoor bar area is just beautiful, with couches to lounge on complete with large area rugs that make you feel like youʼve stepped into someoneʼs home. And then, when you feel like youʼve seen it all, thereʼs an entire other seating area just outside with plenty of room to mingle and socialize. Some serious thought was put into the overall atmosphere of the different areas. No two tables or chairs are alike, creating a casual but sophisticated mood. The bank theme is strong within the venue, a nod to the former use of the area as the drive-through portion of the bank across the street. From the
name of the restaurant and the vault door as you enter to the thousands of pennies making up the water feature and the wall of safety deposit boxes, itʼs clear the designers wanted to preserve the propertyʼs history. Serving salads; flatbread pizza; smoothies; tacos; and steak, chicken or tofu bowls, the food is trendy without being fussy. Your meal is ordered food truck style at the window and then brought to your table when itʼs ready. The Fruity Apple and Pear Salad was the stand out for our family, featuring dried cranberries, candied walnuts, feta cheese, sweet apples and pears, served with a citrus ale dressing. We also enjoyed The Southof-the-Border Bowl, which we ordered with chicken and was topped with black beans, corn, fresh jalapeños and homemade guac. We also tried The Dreamsicle smoothie, which blended oranges, pineapple and Greek yogurt and was topped with granola and fresh orange slices. From the bar, we ordered The Patio Punch, a just-sweet-enough Captain Morgan, Malibu, Bacardi, orange and pineapple juice blend, and the Infinite Ale Works Raspberry Witfinite, a Belgian-style witbier, from the tap. While we were waiting for our meal, the kids enjoyed playing cornhole and the giant Connect 4 game just steps from our table. Lunch at Bank Street made for an excellent afternoon out as a family, but it is also perfect for after-work drinks with friends or a romantic night out with your special someone. cala Eats is a food truck and family-fun event that takes place each Thursday from 5-9pm at the Market. Listen to music, gather with friends and family and relax. Oh, and donʼt forget to eat, too! “This event is about connecting with family,” says Lorna Forest, director of the Ocala Downtown Market. “Our open-air, covered pavilion is a wonderful gathering place for old and new friends.” Each Ocala Eats event is themed and features some sort of entertainment draw. November 7 is the All-Breed Horse Expo and November 14 is an AllBreed Dog Expo and adoption event. On November 21 join the Marion County Literacy Council for its beer and cornhole event at Ocala Eats, and December 5 is a Toys for Tots event. Thereʼs usually a handful of vendors on-site, too. Past events have included movie screenings and dress-up opportunities. Local resident Jennifer Eggers and her family have made it out to Ocala Eats a

handful of times already. “We ride our bikes to the market, which is a treat,” she says. “Itʼs nice to enjoy a nontraditional, mid-week meal from one of our local food trucks. The environment is festive, and there is always music and games.” As a matter of fact, her 11-year-old son, Alex, won a keg rolling contest at the event. “I love our downtown area and seeing it flourish with all these events,” Jennifer adds. “We strive to make the events interesting,” says Lorna. “Itʼs no fun to do the same boring thing time and time again.” Thatʼs why even the food trucks change from week to week. Sure, thereʼs a few regulars, but one week you may be able to enjoy stone-fired pizza and the next tacos or
burgers. The nearby playground is perfect to let the kids loose and Buzz N Grind is on hand to serve up a cold glass of beer or wine. With the weather cooling down, Lorna says itʼs the perfect time to come out and see all that Downtown Ocala has to offer. “We usually have a steady crowd, and we love to see new faces,” she says. “There really is something for everyone to do. Our city is definitely progressing.” Ocala Eats // Every Thursday from 5-9pm // Ocala Downtown Market // 310 SE 3rd Street, Ocala
