From the Publisher
From the Publisher Welcome to the March-April issue of Three Cities! Spring means new beginnings for many of us. We are so excited to visit two restaurants that have (re)opened recently. Hill & Hollow opened in February in the former Glasshouse Grille location in Seneca Center, Morgantown. Hill & Hollow is Chef Marion Ohlinger’s most recent creation— its focus is similar to his former popular Richwood Grill. It is primarily a farm-tofork establishment, and the exploration of global cuisine using local ingredients will still comprise a large part of its menu. The Caboose also opened in February, in the former Red Caboose location in Clarksburg. Under new ownership and newly renovated, The Caboose’s menu features classic Italianstyle meals. Spring also means plenty of activities— racing, birding, and attending special events. Check out our stories about the Caritas House and its “Sweets for the Sweet,” Got Jazz!, PopShop, and other local happenings. As always, our Calendar of Events reflects many fun activities for the entire family. I hope you have the opportunity to enjoy spring in North Central West Virginia! Donna Kirk Publisher

PopShop—A Unique Performance Academy Learn Music. Have Fun. Rock Out. Have you ever fantasized about rocking out on stage? Or just want to learn or improve your music skills? There’s a unique opportunity to do just that in Morgantown. Group and private lessons on various instruments are offered. PopShop is a community-minded non-profit music performance academy. The program provides a creative outlet for individuals ages eight through adult, using group music lessons to develop musical skills as well as life skills. This program is unique because it is based on the notion that popular music styles (rock, pop, country, punk, and r&b) can be used as a vehicle to teach traditional musical concepts. Students choose and assemble a set of music to be presented at public concert events. Live performances are used to help highlight worthy causes in our community and raise money for these same organizations. PopShop teaches that art is important for personal expression, but also emphasizes that it can be used to help others in need. Session one of the spring semester is currently in session, and will conclude with
concerts at 123 Pleasant St. on Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20. The second session of the spring semester begins April 4. Classes offered include Group Performance, Live Sound Engineering, Basic Audio Mixing, Studio Recording, Guitar and Bass Guitar Maintenance, Guitar and Bass Guitar Effects Pedal Class. The session ends with concerts at 123 Pleasant St. on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22.
Come out and hear the concerts, which are open to the public. Shows at 123 Pleasant St. have a suggested donation of $5 and a non-perishable item for the Scott’s Run Settlement House. Feature / Caritas House Serves NCWV
Caritas House Serves NCWV “Sweets for the Sweet” supports its mission Caritas House (caritas is Latin for charity) is a non-profit organization that believes all people have the right to live with dignity. Caritas is one of only three organizations in the state assisting individuals with HIV/ AIDS; in its 22-county service area in NorthCentral West Virginia, it offers advocacy, community outreach, case management, prevention education, permanent housing, and volunteer and supportive services to enable the homeless and individuals with HIV/AIDS to improve their health and quality of life. Caritas House is a proud partner of the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties
and the West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness, and works closely with other agencies including Milan Puskar HealthRight and Bartlett House. Caritas House: • links clients to mental health professionals • helps clients in outlying areas access medical services • connects clients with social services • makes referrals for healthcare and nutritional needs • links clients to emergency or permanent housing • provides food pantry, personal hygiene items, and cleaning products • assists people in obtaining safe affordable housing • advises clients throughout the process of relocating • provides monetary assistance for rent, mortgage, utilities, or transportation • educates community members to help prevent sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS transmission For more than twenty years, Caritas House has responded to the issues and constraints facing individuals with special needs implementing programs to increase their

quality of life. This timeline illustrates the benefits provided to the community. • Established in 1994, Caritas House Inc. is a supportive service agency for people living in North-Central West Virginia who are affected by HIV/AIDS. • In 1995, Caritas House became a provider of Housing Opportunity for People with AIDS (HOPWA) assistance, distributing more than $3 million dollars in housing and utility support over a 10-year period. • In 1996, Caritas House also acquired an emergency shelter for people living with HIV/AIDS who are homeless or in transition. • In 2007, Caritas House launched a permanent supportive housing project called Colligo House to provide housing and supportive services for individuals who are chronically homeless with disabilities. This facility has met the needs of more than 65 individuals, empowering them to be functional members of society again by ensuring their basic needs are met. • In 2015, Caritas House was able to secure funds to build Novus House, low-income housing for individuals who meet criteria including income 80% or below poverty level. Housing & supportive services for individuals Caritas House employs five people to cover these services for 22 counties. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any non-profit organization and Caritas House is no exception. Limited time and limited funds means our volunteer program is absolutely essential to reach our goals. Many hands make light work and we would love to involve you in our volunteer activities. For information about how to volunteer with Caritas House, call 304.985.0021. Primarily due to competing interests submitting grants for similar funding, Caritas House has received less funding; over the past year it has meant more than a $50,000 reduction. You can help!
Caritas House celebrates its 20th annual “Sweets for the Sweet” Mark your calendar for Friday, April 22 at the WVU Erickson Alumni Center! Help Caritas House by supporting and/or attending its annual fundraiser. The 2015 event raised $26,000 in discretionary funds for the organization. With less grant funding, it is important for this event to help raise even more in 2016. There are a number of ways to support this special event. Restaurants from 22 counties are invited to provide sample desserts of their choice, which will compete among other restaurants for the following awards: People’s Choice, Sweetest of the Sweet, 1st Runner Up, 2nd Runner Up, and President’s Choice. A panel of judges, including Miss West Virginia, will determine the overall winner. There is also a People’s Choice Award based on participant votes. Restaurants may register until April 8. Participating restaurants at press time included The Dancing Fig, Rising Creek Bakery, Morgantown Brewing Co, Table 9, Jameson’s, Waterfront Place, and The Cupcakerie. Beer tastings will be provided by Morgantown Brewing Company. Wine tastings will be provided courtesy of Northern Eagle Distributors. Businesses can buy advertising space or sponsorships in the “Sweets for the Sweet” program. Full-page,1/2-page, 1/4-page, and 1/8-page entries are available at reasonable costs through April 8. Special gifts and donated goods provide additional support for the silent auction, door prizes, and raffles. Live music will be provided by Mish Mash Entertainment. Tickets are $20 in advance and $30 the day of the event.
