From the Publisher

From the Publisher Welcome to the July/August issue of Three Cities! This issue illustrates how our area is benefiting from its extensive system of rail trails—and the good news is that we could benefit even more in the future. We also have great news about the opening of the Art Museum of West Virginia University, which will become home to WVU’s extensive art collection and will also host visiting exhibits open to the public. Summer is a very busy time of year for most of us. West Virginia Public Theatre offers four productions and a new feature for children this year. Check out the local district and county fairs. July and August offer live music during the week and every weekend in numerous locations across the area. Concert series are hosted by the city of Clarksburg, the city of Bridgeport, Prickett’s Fort, Palatine Park, Heston Farms, BOPARC, and Chestnut Ridge Park, among other organizations. See a list in the Calendar of Events toward the back of this publication and be sure to get out and enjoy some live music this summer! Donna Kirk Publisher

Feature / Rail Trails

Rail Trail Interest on the Upswing North Central West Virginia benefiting Many of America’s railroads began their decline in the 1960s, leaving behind thousands of miles of abandoned and unused tracks. But thanks to organizations like Railsto-Trails Conservancy and thousands of railtrail advocacy groups across the country, these abandoned rails have been repurposed and transformed into open trails for some of the best hiking and biking in the country. Due to an active local organization, the Mon River Trails Conservancy, NCWV is fortunate to have a series of rail-trails offering tremendous opportunities for recreation. These trails are generally flat and vary from paved surfaces to crushed limestone. Currently, over fifty miles are open for non-motorized use—primarily walking, cycling, running, and cross-country skiing with a smooth, durable surface for wheel-chair use and 14

all types of bicycles. Existing trails include the Caperton Trail (paved), Mon River Trail North and South (limestone), Deckers Creek Trail (paved and limestone), Cheat Lake Trail (limestone), MCTrail (paved), and the West Fork River Trail (paved and limestone). For more information about existing and proposed trails, including maps, or to find out more about how to support the Mon River Trails Conservancy, visit http://www. montrails.org/. In April, Morgantown was the site for the inaugural West Virginia Rail-Trail Sojourn. Tom Sexton, Director, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Northeast Regional Office, stated, “No other city I can think of provides three different trails of twenty miles from one hub. Yes, we plan to come back!”

Feature / Rail Trails

A recent article published by the West Virginia Community Development Hub explains the potential positive impact of trail tourism to our area. This article is reprinted with permission from the West Virginia Community Development Hub, wvhub.org. Rail-Trailers Take Morgantown and Demonstrate Potential of Trail Tourism to West Virginia Did you know that Americans spend more each year on bicycling gear and trips than they do on airplane tickets and fees? That’s a lot of money. About $646 billion in consumer spending and 6.1 million direct jobs a year. That’s one of the many reasons communities all over the country are building trail systems as a savvy investment in their local economy. An organized effort to link a 180-mile system of rail-trails out of Morgantown received a very public launch April 24–26 with the riding of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s inaugural West Virginia Rail-Trail Sojourn. Sojourners spent three days riding the three arms of the Mon River Trails system as well as the Marion County Trail, the Cheat Lake Trail and the Sheepskin Trail.

Communities all over the country are building trail systems as a savvy investment in their local economy. Morgantown was the hub, and the riders flowed in and out of town to the south, the north, and the south east. They stayed in local hotels, ate at local restaurants, and shopped in local stores. And, to put it simply, it was this region’s rail-trails that brought them to town.

They were from New York, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Ohio, Indiana, Maryland and Virginia. They stayed in local hotels, ate at local restaurants, and shopped in local stores. This tour of rail-trails in and around Morgantown attracted about 100 riders and support staff from 13 states, who spent more than $38,000 on local hotels, food, and services. Each Sojourn rider spent an average of $121.53 on meals, beverages, and snacks from local shops and restaurants, in addition to the food provided by Railsto-Trails Conservancy which was sourced from local vendors. $20,835.00 was spent on lodging.

But the system is not quite complete. In some sections, the trail hits a dead-end, preventing riders from extended their trip, visiting other communities, staying an extra night or two. And while the 80-mile tour the riders enjoyed is certainly a start, by completing just a few strategic segments of the trail system the Morgantown area would put itself at the center of a 180-mile trail network that would be the envy of the rail-trail world, and link to the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) in Pennsylvania. As the GAP already does for Pennsylvania, it would bring riders from all over the world to West Virginia. (The GAP has been shown to generate more than $40 million in direct spending from trail users annually, and an average of $114 in spending per day from overnight visitors.)

WVU Photo

Feature / Art Museum of WVU

Art Museum of WVU to Open in August Museum will enrich the university and the community Did you know West Virginia University currently has nearly 3,000 works of art in its collection? A press release issued by WVU earlier this year explained, “The WVU art collection has been assembled for more than 40 years from generous gifts from alumni and friends as well as acquisitions purchased from funds donated for the collection. The collection has strong Appalachian roots with works by West Virginians such as woodblock artist Blanche Lazzell and Grace Martin Taylor, and gifts from the Appalachian collection of Ramona Lampell, which highlights self-taught artists throughout the region. But the collection also houses works 20

by names almost everyone is familiar with, including Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Ansel Adams. And there is a substantial collection of African art of more than 300 pieces.” Until now, the collection has been scattered; some of the works have been displayed in various university buildings, but most have been in storage. Joyce Ice, director of the Art Museum of WVU, explains, “We will now be able to showcase the depth of our collection. The Art Museum is a beautiful place for people to see and experience art. We are looking forward to sharing the collection with the campus and the public,

and offering educational programs designed to enhance appreciation of art and artists while increasing awareness of how art enriches our lives as individuals, families, and communities.” About the Museum The Art Museum of West Virginia University is located on Patteson Drive between the Creative Arts Center and the Museum Education Center, or former Alumni Center. The Museum Education Center now houses offices for museum staff and features a Grand Hall which is used for programs and will continue to be leased for public functions as available. The museum is free and open to the public. Visitors will be able to view works in two exhibition galleries totaling 5,400 square feet. One of the galleries is named for donors John and Ruth McGee, and a second will be named for a future donor. The galleries will be home to WVU’s collection and will also host visiting exhibits. The building is designed to be energy-efficient while adjusting light, humidity, and temperature to protect vulnerable works of art. The museum also features various open spaces designed to optimize outdoor light and views for visitors as they move from one gallery to another or take a break to enjoy the roughly 30 by 30-foot mural. Joginder Nath has contributed funds for a sculpture garden planned to complement the park-like setting in front of the building. The museum structure also includes areas for other purposes—a classroom, climatecontrolled collection storage, and a collection research room designed for individuals or classes studying parts of the collection and available by appointment only through the curator or registrar. Education and Programming The museum will offer art education for students, teachers, and community members through workshops, research, and programs like Art Up Close!. Art Up Close! spotlights one work of art per session, with a crossdisciplinary approach that features speakers from various departments speaking about

art from their perspective. Participating disciplines have included Religious Studies, Art History, History, Theater and Dance, English, Law, Geography, and Women and Gender Studies. Art Up Close! is scheduled once a month, and is open to the public in addition to students and faculty. Opening Week Events Following is a schedule of events for Opening Week. The first exhibit, entitled “Visual Conversations: Looking and Listening,” focuses on the connections, direct or indirect, we experience with and among works of art as we view them. The art works and the artists who created them have multiple connections, parallels, and relationships with one another that spark visual associations. Some of the artists are contemporaries, sharing the same influences, aware of one another’s work, sometimes evoking inspiration and sometimes provoking competition. They speak to us as viewers across time and space. Feature / WVPT Summer Lineup / Academic Summer Camps

WVPT 2015 Summer Lineup Announced Larry Mabrey, in his inaugural year as West Virginia Public Theatre’s Executive Director, and his new staff announce a phenomenal lineup for the 2015 Summer Season. The season kicks off July 8–12 in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre at WVU’s College of Creative Arts. A Grand Night for Singing is a musical revue from Rodgers & Hammerstein that features hit songs from some of their greatest musicals including Cinderella, Carousel, Oklahoma!, and South Pacific.

The summer season closes at the Metropolitan Theatre with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast from July 29–August 2. This Broadway success is the story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and Beast, a prince under a spell who becomes bewildered by Belle’s beauty. WVPT is proud to announce a new feature this year—the Dragon’s Dream Theatre. This troupe of young artists will create and perform engaging, educational, and entertaining original shows for families and younger audiences. Children will experience the magic and freedom of theatre with shorter length performances tailored to their age level. Public performances will be in The Clay Theatre at WVU’s Creative Arts Center

At the Historic Metropolitan Theatre, from July 15–19, WVPT will present Footloose, a stage adaptation based on the hit Kevin Bacon film. First seen as just a rebellious teen, Ren shows the importance of enjoying youth, dancing, cutting loose, and learning to love through- WVPT promises to provide an exciting, entertaining, and out this musical.

enthralling theatrical experience for the entire family.

From July 22–26, we return to the Lyell B. Clay Theatre to present Smoke on the Mountain, a bluegrass gospel musical that shares the tale of the Sanders Family. After a five-year hiatus, they start touring and end up trying to modernize a local church by ‘witnessing’ important events from their lives. By the evening’s end, the Sanders Family has endeared themselves by revealing their weaknesses and allowing us to share in their triumphs.
