Feature / Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival
Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival 10th annual event scheduled for December 12 By Shannon Colaianni Tinnell
Main Street Fairmont will host the 10th Annual Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival on December 12. Located on Monroe Street in historic downtown Fairmont, the popular street fair dedicated to preserving Italian-American culinary and cultural traditions will be open from 11 am to 6 pm. Traditional Italian foods, live music, a cooking school, a street market, and plenty of warm, dry seating are all awaiting attendees.
The festival offers authentic foods showcasing local chefs and restaurants. Holiday favorites including lupini beans, fried smelt and calamari, beer, wine, soups, sandwiches, and Italian pastries and breads are sold on the street. The Festival Cucina cooking school is planned this year for Friday night, December 11 from 6 to 8 pm. The school educates participants about how to prepare a variety of old and new recipes they can serve at home on Christmas Eve. It is the only event at the festival that charges an admission fee–a modest $25 (and that includes generous samples!). Tickets may be purchased from Main Street Fairmont.
The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a tradition amongst Italian immigrants to serve a seafood meal on Christmas Eve while observing “La Vigilia,” or the vigil of the Christ child. Among the southern-Italian immigrant community the observation of this tradition has managed to survive as many others have disappeared, especially in north-central West Virginia. However, time and assimilation are beginning to erode the practice, and the goal of Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival is to help preserve this custom through the collecting of food ways, traditions, and folklore of Italian Americans living in north-central West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania.
Join us and enjoy the sounds and sights and aromas of Christmas! A unique combination of Italian and Christmas music and entertainment will be featured on the center stage. There will be plenty of tables and chairs located in the firehouse and in various locations under shelter to keep warm. Year in, year out, no matter the weather, thousands of area residents have chosen the Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival as a place to meet family and friends, recapture a little bit of an authentic Christmas tradition, and help keep that authenticity going for generations to come. Holiday Jazz Stroll Set for December 11 in Clarksburg Theme is “By Special Request” Head for Clarksburg to experience a unique annual holiday music event on Friday, December 11! “The choice of artists is as diverse and varied as our audiences in central West Virginia,” said Mike Lambiotte of Clarksburg Uptown, Inc. (CU), the nonprofit volunteer group that has embraced the arts as a vehicle for community and economic development. “We’ve had requests for blues, progressive, Latin, and, of course, traditional jazz, plus a new genre to us, Western Swing, and we will have all that and more at this year’s Holiday Jazz Stroll.”
Music beginning at 6:30, 8, and 9:30 pm includes: • Comparsa featuring Eduardo Canelon performing Latin jazz in 4th Street Nightclub and Restaurant • Blue Committee performing classic jazz arrangements in The Starving Artist Studio • Neotronic featuring Bo McMillion doing progressive jazz in Fifth Floor Lounge • Melva Houston Blues Band in Kelly’s Pub with a “downhome blues” show Music beginning at 8, 9:30, and 11 pm includes: • The James Moore Quartet playing traditional jazz in Washington Square • The Mavens playing western swing in Main St. Café and Music Hall
CU, Inc. contracts with the West Virginia Jazz Society, Inc. (WVJS) to identify and book the six jazz ensembles appearing in six different venues in a two-block area of Clarksburg’s historic business district. Each band will play three one-hour sets of music with a half hour break between sets to allow patrons to take socialize or “stroll” to another venue. Bands will come from Morgantown, Elkins, Charleston, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Charlotte, and Pittsburgh. According to WVJS President, Eric Spelsberg, the diversity of jazz styles will hopefully
attract a larger cross section of regional music fans. “The Mavens perform swing music featuring a pedal steel guitar,” explained Spelsberg. “You might think it’s country music at first, but it’s really more an Americana sound. Their fans in Pittsburgh love them.” There is no cover charge for the music. Each venue will have its own pricing and seating policies. Feature / Seth Maynard
Seth Maynard: North Central WV’s Renaissance Man “A very clever person who is good at many different things” Seth Maynard is well known throughout the region as a musician, recording studio engineer and producer, and teacher. He owns and operates Lone Wolf Productions in Elkins where his credits are numerous, including sound mixing for the award-winning West Virginia PBS show “American Mountain Theater.” —from Seth’s bio on the Davis and Elkins College website Seth is on the faculty of Davis and Elkins College, teaches private guitar lessons, manages his production company, and plays year-round—solo and collaboratively. Seth remarked, “I enjoy all aspects of my work. All the components fit together well. I’ve always had a curiosity about how to create and recreate music—how to get those sounds—I wanted to know how to make them. And I’ve also been fascinated with the electronic audio aspect. 16
“And no matter the genre—rock, jazz, pop, country, instrumental, I like it all. As far back as I can remember, I had an early interest in music. My father played the piano—old jazz standards, classical, and boogey-woogie; and my brother played the drums. My brother and I eventually played together in a rock and roll band. “I formed my first band when I was 13; our first gig was at the West Virginia Children’s Home in Elkins, and those kids loved it. I formed another in high school—we played classic rock and southern rock; I played with people at D&E. I often performed at church on various instruments and in the choir, under the directorship of Dr. Melody Meadows. And I was often playing guitar or bass for many community and college musicals in the region, from “Little Shop of Horrors” to “Peter Pan.”
Feature / Seth Maynard
After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Seth broadened his range. He started teaching guitar and managing a music store. And he did various recording work on Clarksburg native John Angotti’s first three albums, then toured with John in the 1990s playing Christian music in Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Anaheim, San Francisco, and many other cities across the country. Angotti currently directs John Angotti Music Mission, which tours nationally and typically performs at Clarksburg’s annual Italian Heritage Festival. As a by-product of another studio project, Seth traveled up and down the East Coast with jam band “Zen,” playing original tunes and Grateful Dead covers. During the early 2000s, “Zen” opened for nationally known acts like Blues Travelers, String Cheese Incident, Derrick Trucks, and others.
“If I project a certain sound, it’s more to do with interpretation. I look at any song as an opportunity to do interpretation. I still love all the classic rock songs, but prefer jazz interpretation, improvisation, reharmonizing—whatever you want to call it. Instead of playing just as the audience has heard it before, it’s more fun to be creative. “Of course, there are times it makes more sense to play just as people know it, as well. When people request songs, it means a lot to them. I want people to be moved. Evoking emotion is very satisfying for me.” Seth’s wide-ranging traveling days came to a halt in 2005, when he took a full-time position as bassist/vocalist/guitarist at the American Mountain Theater in Elkins. The theater features an award-winning, Bransonstyle music and comedy show for tourist groups. “Back when the theater first opened, we would perform as many as 200 or more
shows a year! I stopped performing regularly with AMT in 2010, but maintain a great working relationship with the cast, crew, and owner, Kenny Sexton.” Seth also plays multiple instruments. He started on trombone. “I don’t play trombone any more, but play decent keyboard/piano, bass, and percussion, in addition to guitar. Collaborating with other musicians—I enjoy it, and it’s a necessity; I wouldn’t get to perform as much if I didn’t. And my background working in the studio and teaching helps make me better at it.” Recent local collaborative events include gigs with the WV Jazz Society, Mia Margherita, Bridgeport Farmers Market, Bridgeport Benedum Festival, Italian Heritage Festival, Mountain State Forest Festival, Capon Bridge Founders Day Festival, and Highland Jam Festival. Seth has two CDs, Osmosis (2010), a jazz/ fusion album with his quartet, and Make the Season Bright (2012), a collaboration with other local musicians performing unique versions of holiday favorites. Feature / Madrigal Feast
Local Madrigal Feast Slated for December 7 One of the nation’s oldest community-based madrigal ensembles For 77 years, the Madrigal Singers of Clarksburg have delighted West Virginia audiences with their performance of the grand choral music of the Renaissance. The tradition continues this year with the annual Christmas Madrigal Feast on Monday, December 7, at 7 pm, in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church of Clarksburg. “This will be our 36th year of presenting an Elizabethan Madrigal Feast in Clarksburg,” reports Gardner. “When we began, the idea was rare in our area, although the tradition is centuries old in Britain. Now, many cities host such events, often featuring college or high school groups. Ours is still unique in both the longevity of the ensemble, and its distinct community-based membership. The kind and faithful support of our audiences makes celebrations such as this possible through the years.” Tickets are $10.00 each and may be obtained by calling Cheryl Moorhead at 304.677.9859. This price includes a wonderful meal accompanied by the singing of the Clarksburg Madrigals.
18
Other engagements for the Madrigals this season include performances at the Stonewall Resort, the Holly Ball Benefit Celebration, and private holiday events in Morgantown and Bridgeport. For more information about the 2015 Feast, or the Madrigal Singers, contact director Don Gardner at 304.623.3397.
