People have understood the significance of the Black Hills since we first arrived. Because of a complex cultural history, different groups of residents and visitors have expressed different interpretations over time—but in the end, the area’s value has never been questioned. No matter your age or fitness level, the Black Hills are an ideal stage for a great vacation experience. This small mountain range offers everything from picturesque drives, to easy strolling trails, to significant peaks requiring solid hiking 14

or climbing gear. Because of the Native American belief that the Black Hills are sacred lands, many sites also have interesting—and sometimes controversial—stories. Curious visitors can uncover moving, exciting histories that will make for an unforgettable, educational Black Hills trip. THE “NEEDLES” A great place to dive into the Black Hills is via the Needles Highway, a 14-mile stretch of SD Highway 87 that leads to a group of granite spires known as the Cathedral Spires, or the

Needles, shown above. Marked by narrow tunnels and sharp turns, the road is a favorite for motorcycle and hearty bicycle enthusiasts. The Needles sport famous and often difficult climbing routes, many of which are not recommended for novices. Even so, the area beneath the spires is perfect for a family picnic and a hike! DEVILS TOWER/ BEAR LODGE BUTTE This iconic igneous butte near Hulett and Sundance, Wyoming, rises a dramatic 867 feet from base to summit. It

The Black Hills is filled with unique formations that attract outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. From hiking and climbing to camping and fishing, western South Dakota has an adventure waiting for you.

BLACK ELK PEAK Formerly known as Harney Peak, Black Elk Peak is the tallest mountain between the Rockies and the Swiss Alps. At the top, hikers can explore the stone fire tower and witness a magnificent view across the Black Elk Wilderness Area. The approximately seven-mile-roundtrip hike includes terrain from easy to relatively strenuous, and it requires a half-day to complete. When traveling with children, you might schedule the day. Remember to carry water, lunch, and rain gear—sudden afternoon summer storms are common.

was the country’s first National Monument, established in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Like many significant sites in the area, its name has a story. Native Americans have several names for the butte, including Bear’s House, and Great Gray Horn, among many others. The name Devils Tower came from a mistaken translation of a conversation with a Native speaker during an

1875 military expedition. While the Tower is a favorite climbing spot, attracting hundreds of climbers each summer, several Plains Indian tribes consider climbing a desecration of a sacred place. Therefore, most climbers honor a voluntary climbing ban during the month of June each year, when Native ceremonies are conducted around the breathtaking monument.

CHANGING NAMES Because General William S. Harney— after whom the peak was named in 1855— was known to have led attacks against Native Americans, the US Board on Geographic Names officially renamed the mountain in 2016. Nicholas Black Elk, the peak’s new (and original) namesake, was a revered Lakota holy man who received an important vision of human unity when he was only nine years old.

MAKE A SPLASH DURING YOUR VACATION Find a piece of serenity as you visit one of the six most popular lakes in the Black Hills. Take a swim, enjoy the sun, and stay a while! Although western South Dakota has only four natural lakes, 18 additional, engineered lakes and reservoirs provide both natural beauty and endless recreation. All year long, outdoor enthusiasts swim, boat, fish, water ski—and in winter, icefish. This season, make sure to pack your swimwear, along with sturdy water shoes for lake bottoms. Pristine bodies of water can be found throughout the Black Hills, from north to south. Here are our “main attractions.” 18

ORMAN DAM— BELLE FOURCHE Also known as the Belle Fourche Reservoir, Orman is more than 8,000 acres with 58 miles of shoreline. When built in 1911, it was the largest earthen dam of its time and was designated as a National Historic Engineering Landmark. Camp, fish, and play here. PACTOLA RESERVOIR— CENTRAL This lake is 785 acres—the largest within the Black Hills proper. Located on US Highway

385, Pactola is popular with boaters—including speed boats pulling water skiers. Fishing, camping, and hiking are also available. SHERIDAN LAKE—HILL CITY Just seven miles from Hill City, Sheridan Lake is 383 acres and sports two swimming beaches, a marina, two campgrounds, and family-friendly picnic areas. DEERFIELD LAKE—HILL CITY Tucked into the forest, Deerfield Lake is a “no-wake” lake, perfect for paddle boarding, canoeing,

FISHING While trout are not native to the region, the cool and swift streams of the Hills have allowed stocked trout to thrive over the past century. Anglers pursue rainbow, brook, and brown trout—and that’s not all. Yellow perch, crappies, walleyes, bass (large and smallmouth), catfish, and northern pike are also favorites. One-day, three-day, and yearlong fishing licenses are available at stores throughout the Hills.

ANGOSTURA RESERVOIR— HOT SPRINGS The large 4,612-acre lake is our area’s southern-most water recreation spot. GHOST TOWNS Two former mining towns, founded in 1874-75, are now at the bottom of local lakes. Both Pactola and Sheridan, in the Central Hills, were populated by miners during the Gold Rush; when gold supplies dwindled, the towns were abandoned. The dam above Sheridan was finished in 1942, and whatever churches, schools, and businesses that remained were covered by the reservoir. Most of Pactola’s buildings, on the other hand, were removed before flooding in 1956. Only a CCC dynamite bunker remains underwater there.

SCENIC DRIVES EXPLORE THE HIGHWAYS & BYWAYS

Wind your way through Spearfish Canyon to see numerous hidden waterfalls and babbling brooks. You can head down Needles Highway, full of granite spires and ponderosa pine forests, in Custer State Park, too. Or, drive past magnificient hillsides in the 17-mile Vanocker Canyon outside of Rapid City, which continues to the quaint town of Nemo, and 12-mile Boulder Canyon (US Hwy 14A) between Sturgis and Deadwood. Whether admiring the vast carpet of trees for as far as the eye can see, or the wealth of interesting wildlife, you can experience the Hills without leaving your car! The 70-mile Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway near Custer State Park curves around serene lakes, towering geological formations, tunnels, tight turns, and through wildlife areas. For 20

wide-open spaces and views of one-of-a-kind formations, add the Badlands Loop and SD Hwy 34 to WY Hwy 24 (Belle Fourche to Devils Tower) to your list. The 31-mile Badlands Loop is consistently rated as one of the best scenic drives in the country, and goes through passes, 15 overlooks, eight trails, and an informative visitor center packed with interesting history, paleontology, and geological tidbits. If you cross over the South Dakota/Wyoming border, in Crook County, the drive to Cement Ridge Lookout cannot be missed! Visitors can drive to the peak, which has majestic views of the sprawling Black Hills and a fire watch tower is at the top. No matter where your path is taking you on your Black Hills roadtrip, scenic views will meet you along the way.

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL

Discover a piece of history as you meet the four United States presidents carved in stone. Your visit will be treasured for a lifetime. Nestled into the side of granite hills, the carved faces of four United States presidents are a site to see for many—and an experience you will remember for a lifetime. Starting with a vision in the early 1920s, South Dakota State Historian Doane Robinson and others first envisioned Old West heroes carved into the granite spires of the Needles. Convinced of the project’s potential, the talented sculptor Gutzon Borglum decided that four presidents representing the first 150 years of American history would be the most appropriate subjects for carving. In the end, Rushmore Mountain near Keystone was 22

chosen due to the size of the project. President Calvin Coolidge formally dedicated the project on August 10, 1927, and efforts continued on the carving of Mount Rushmore for the next fourteen years. NEARING COMPLETION When Borglum died in March 1941, officials turned the project over to his son, Lincoln, for completion. Due to the escalation of World War II and the lack of funds, the four figures were never completed. Borglum’s original vision included the Presidents sculpted down to their waists, but the famous monument remains iconic.

Be a part of history in the making as you visit Crazy Horse Memorial—the world’s largest carving in progress near Custer. On June 3, 1948, a group of people gathered near Crazy Horse Mountain, previously known as Thunderhead Mountain, to witness the first blast—and to mark the beginning of a Dream that would span multiple generations. Among those attending were five of the nine remaining survivors of the Battle of the Little Big Horn and then-South Dakota Governor George T. Mickelson. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski had been asked by Chief Henry Standing Bear through written correspondence to come to the 24

sacred Paha Sapa (Black Hills) to carve a memorial honoring a Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse. Crazy Horse had been killed at Fort Robinson in 1877. In his letter to Korczak, Henry Standing Bear wrote, “My fellow chiefs and I would like the white man to know the red man has great heroes, also.” In May of 1947, Korczak started the project with only $174. Labor-intensive tasks included single-jacking (handdrilling) holes for the dedication blast and the countless blasts that followed. Later, he built a

741-step staircase, which he climbed several times daily— often to restart “Buda,” the air compressor at the bottom that powered his drill. Despite weather that could make work difficult, Korczak continued the monumental endeavor yearround (weather permitting). A FAMILY LEGACY From the beginning, Ruth (Ross) Ziolkowski supported Korczak in the realization of the Dream and assisted in multiple facets of it. The two even went to the extent of outlining the sculpture

Following Korczak’s death on October 20, 1982, Ruth made the well-considered decision to shift focus to Crazy Horse’s Face, a profile that would be visible proof of the project’s continuation. This effort to show the world was a success, and was marked by the dedication of Crazy Horse’s finished Face on June 3, 1998. This was one of many milestones that took place as Ruth carried on the leadership role. She remained heavily involved in all aspects until her death on May 21, 2014.

CURRENT PROGRESS The current Carving focus is on Crazy Horse’s Hand and the Horse’s Mane area. Rock removal in this delicate area is labor intensive; in many ways, similar to work on Crazy Horse’s Face. This involves a great deal of drilling, and uses a process referred to as “feathers and wedges” that removes rows of blocks—visible from the Viewing Veranda at the Visitor Complex less than one mile away. Blocking-out the sculpture has progressed to the benches, an area measured in 20-foot increments starting from the top of Crazy Horse’s Head. Blasting is most common in this phase of rock removal. In all the effort over the years, the man called Crazy Horse has been steadily emerging out of the stone walls. As though in response to the question he was once asked by a white trader, “Where are your lands now?” firmly Crazy Horse answers visually in stone with his original response: “My lands are where my dead lie buried.” A LOOK AT THE FUTURE Today, the Dream from long ago is still embedded in those who remain at Crazy Horse, including a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors, two of Korczak and Ruth’s daughters who serve as CEOs, as well as many dedicated, skilled professionals. A project that began simply with a letter has grown into an icon of history, culture, and humanity; and it continues to possess farreaching implications for the state and nation.

Drive through the scenic, rugged landscape of ancient sediments, then stop by one of America's favorite roadside attractions. You’re traveling across the vast state of South Dakota and you see billboard after billboard announcing the upcoming attraction of Wall Drug. In fact, there are signs all over the word telling you how many miles it would take to get there—from Afghanistan and Kenya, all the way to Antarctica. But before you head to Wall, stop seven miles south at Badlands National Park and see the spectacular sunrise. Millions of visitors each year are welcomed to the Badlands— known worldwide for its natural collection of fossils and geological formations, stretching 30

244,300 acres. Whether you’re going to choose a trail to explore, drive the scenic loop, or take a break on an overlook to capture a photo—the park is one stop you will not want to miss out on. Native Americans have long used the Badlands area as a hunting ground. Lakota Native Americans have even found fossilized seashells and turtle shells and correctly theorized that the Badlands had once been underwater. Today, you won’t find any alligators in the park, but you may catch a glimpse of local wildlife such as bighorn sheep,

bison, prairie dogs, and the rare black-footed ferret. Black-footed ferrets once numbered in the thousands but were brought to the brink of extinction in the 1960s due to habitat loss and disease. In 1979, they were declared extinct until they were reintroduced into the Badlands from Wyoming. When hiking in the Badlands, remember to bring water and sun protection, wear appropriate footwear, and stay a respectful distance from wildlife. A good rule of thumb to remember: if the wildlife is reacting to your presence, you are too close!

After your drive through Badland National Park, follow the billboards to Wall Drug. Getting its beginning in 1931, Dorothy and Ted Hustead opened Wall’s one and only drugstore on the edge of the small town. After business had been steadily slow, the Husteads posted a sign nearby that offered free ice water to travelers venturing across the state. The rest is history!

As you enter the boardwalk in front of the drugstore, you can almost imagine what it was like years ago. Now, the roadside attraction is filled with retail outlets, a restaurant, a café, and a place for families to get outside and play. After you’ve seen the T. THE MAMMOTH SITE NATURAL LANDMARK

Come face-to-face with creatures from thousands of years ago as you visit the in situ (on site) museum exhibits in Hot Springs. More than 26,000 years ago, Ice Age fauna were trapped and died in a spring-fed pond near the southwest edge of Hot Springs. Over the course of the next 350 to 700 years, the hole filled with sediments and mammoth remains. For centuries the bones lay buriedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;until discovered by chance in 1974. While excavating for a housing development, earth-moving equipment exposed one 32

of South Dakotaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest treasures. The Site was found to contain the largest concentration of Columbian and woolly mammoth bones discovered in the world. Fortunately, through the work of local citizens, 14 acres of land now known as The Mammoth Site was preserved as a resource for scientific study and in 1980 the Site added to the list of National Natural Landmarks in the United States.

Today the location is not only an attraction for visitors, it is an indoor working paleontological dig site and Accredited Museum, laboratory, and research facility where paleontologists and volunteers preserve these historic relics. Enclosed and protected by a climate-controlled building, the sinkhole and exhibits attract visitors year-round. The bones are on display as they were discovered for an in situ exhibit.

LIMITED STAKES When the constitutional amendment allowing limitedstakes gambling in Deadwood was passed, there were only two other places in America where gambling was legal: Nevada and Atlantic City. The law authorizing gambling in Deadwood mandated that

a significant portion of the revenue would be earmarked for historic preservation efforts. The city’s casinos now bring in over $100 million in gross receipts every year, with over $7 million annually funnelled into renovation of the historic buildings and restoration of the city infrastructure.

SMALL TOWN CHARM WITH BIG POTENTIAL

Visitors can walk the streets of a quaint downtown district, visit locally owned shops and boutiques, and grab a bite to eat at one of their local restaurants. After dinner, take in a performance at the Historic Homestake Opera House—fondly known as the Jewel of the Black Hills. Built in 1914, this beautiful building still operates as a venue for concerts, theatre, music, dance, events, and more. Lead (pronounced “leed”) was founded in 1876 after the discovery of gold had the Black Hills booming. The mountain community tucked away high in the Black Hills was home to the great Homestake Mining Company – the largest and deepest gold mine in North America producing 40 million ounces of gold from 1876-2001. The town was built by and for 82

mining families and has been preserved ever since. In 2007, Lead’s fame shifted to science when the mining site was turned into the Sanford Underground Laboratory. Now, many sensitive physics experiments are conducted 4,850 feet below the surface. Above ground, learn about the mining history at The Homestake Visitor Center. They offer free viewing of the historic 1876 Open Cut mining area, artifacts, an informational mining video, historic and educational memorabilia, and a gift shop. While you're here, be sure to attend one of Lead's community events throughout the warm-weather months. From festivals and parades to outdoor concerts and firework displays, this area is known for a diverse mix of entertainment everyone can enjoy!

BELLE FOURCHE A WESTERN PIONEER COMMUNITY

Defined as "the Beautiful Forks" in French, Belle Fourche (pronounced “Bell Foosh”) is noted for being the geographic Center of the Nation – marked by a granite monument and a path of flags. Sheriff and rancher Seth Bullock persuaded the railroad to build through his ranch, ultimately creating the western cow town. In 1893, more range cattle were shipped out by rail than at any other railhead with a record of 4,700 carloads. As the population grew, Orman Dam – also known as the Belle Fourche Resevoir – was created giving the agriculture community a large boost. Today, many residents enjoy camping and spending the day at the dam swimming, fishing, and boating. Belle Fourche is proudly known for their fourth of July celebrations. Red, white, and 86

blue adorn the streets for the mile-long parade. Enjoy the carnival downtown filled with family-friendly rides and don’t miss the city-wide barbecue. Then for the finale – the Black Hills Roundup, one of the oldest continuously held outdoor rodeos in America. Top-ranked cowboys and cowgirls come from all over to compete in many events including barrel racing, bareback riding, bull riding and more. World-class livestock are provided and National Finals Rodeo (NFR) bucking stock is brought in to challenge champion riders. Are engines more your thing? CENTER OF THE NATION Although the monument is placed in Belle Fourche, the actual center of the nation is 21 miles outside of town on private land in a nearby pasture. If you're looking to visit the remote location, follow the directions on the city's chamber of commerce site and look for a patriotic sign and a US Flag. Watch out for cow pies!

STURGIS A CITY OF RIDERS

Founded in 1876, Sturgis was named after Fort Meade commander Major Samuel D. Sturgis. Fort Meade was a nearby cavalry post established to protect those who were flocking to the Black Hills after the discovery of gold, and later became the home for the 7th Cavalry after the massacre at Little Bighorn. Today, Sturgis is defined by its duality. Serving as both a mountain town and a ranch community, it's nestled in the northeastern Black Hills. All summer, Sturgis is a destination for riders from all over the country. Sturgis is a small town of about 6,800 people. But, for one outrageous week in August, hundreds of thousands of bikers and vendors descend on Sturgis— making it one of the most famous motorcycle rallies in 88

the world. What started in 1938 as a dirt-track motorcycle race has evolved into South Dakota’s largest tourism event and has spread throughout the entire Black Hills, keeping its focus in the Sturgis community. As the month continues, sports cars fill the streets in late August and early September for the annual Sturgis Mustang Rally. Participants in this event enjoy everything from autocross, drag racing, burnouts, auctions, and anything else they can imagine. But events aren’t the only thing the city of riders is known for. Their industrial park is home to some of the premiere gun makers and ammunition manufacturers in the nation. Sturgis has a great deal to offer its visitors. Discover a historic city rich in the tradition of legendary riders.

NATURAL WONDERS Mato Paha “Bear Mountain” is the name given by the Lakota to the sacred site of Bear Butte State Park outside of Sturgis. The park is still important in American Indian ceremonies and offers great hikes for visitors. From the 4,426-foot summit, you can view four states in the distance.

MAKE YOUR TRIP MONUMENTAL Soar through the skies, slide down the Hills, and see the historical faces of Mount Rushmore in this monumental community filled with fun for all ages. Nestled in a valley within the beautiful Black Hills, the tiny, historic mining town of Keystone rests only three miles from the base of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Keystone’s fate changed in 1927, when sculptor Gutzon Borglum began carving his massive American monument; at its completion in 1941, 393,000 tourists came to see the famous carving. This mile-high mountain town benefits from its location—a prime, central setting on the edge of Custer State Park, crisscrossed with miles of trails and backcountry roads left behind by early western pioneers, ranchers, and loggers. Custer was the first town in the Black Hills, established in 1875, named after the infamous Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer—and is the site of one of the major encampments of the Black Hills Expedition, which made the first public discovery of gold in 1874 in nearby French Creek leading the way to the Black Hills Gold Rush. Originally called Minnekahta (warm waters) by its founders in 1879, Hot Springs is located on the southeast edge of the Black Hills. Early town entrepreneurs touted the health benefits of the city’s warm, dry climate, and healing warm water spas. With the arrival of the railroad in 1891, thousands of people came into the town for the medicinal attributes of the healing water. The city's Historic District was largely built during this boom, and includes beautiful sandstone buildings. Today, visitors can still relax in the historic spas that utilize the natural warm waters from the springs below – like Evans Plunge, the largest natural warm-water (87 degrees) indoor swimming pool in the entire world. Walking through northern and central towns like Spearfish, Deadwood, Lead, and more— take in the old-west feel of 1800 architecture that has been restored to its original state. As you venture to the southern Hills, you will notice the stunning warm colored sandstone buildings. Hot Springs is known for its wealth of stunning sandstone architecture, from the historic Evans Hotel to the library to the huge Pioneer Museum. All of the town’s early buildings were built with stone from Evans Quarry, and the wide availability of the sandstone led to almost the entire town to be built from the stone.

Custer State Park may not traditionally be known for performing arts, but one of the best playhouses in the Hills is housed there. Rapid City’s Performing Arts Center has two venues and produces performances from concerts to theatrical plays.

MICKELSON TRAIL

Running 108.8 miles, from Edgemont in the south to Deadwood in the north, the Mickelson is a rails-to-trails project that provides unique access to the Black Hills. The trail passes through Hill City and Custer, and includes 15 trailheads, four tunnels, and 100 converted railroad bridges. Shuttles available.

GOING UNDERGROUND

The Black Hills were uplifted several times over geologic history, starting at the end of the age of dinosaurs, about 66 million years ago. On and off until about six million years ago, the Paha Sapa Limestone was elevated above the water table—when rain fell, it dissolved the stone, causing caves. See Jewel Cave National Monument, Rushmore Cave, Wind Cave National Park, Black Hills Caverns, and Wonderland Cave. See more about caves on page 130.

CAVES & MINES AN UNDERGROUND ADVENTURE

Head back into the days of the Black Hills Gold Rush and explore the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s caves and mines with knowledgeable guides. Limestone is a soluble rock that encircles the Black Hills. For hundreds of thousands of years, water has worked like a chisel to create these underground masterpieces and miles of passageways. The limestone caves of this area are among the deepest and longest in the world and contain some the most unusual formations geologists have ever seen. Dozens of calcite crystal caves can be found in the Black Hills. These caves have translucent calcite crystal deposits, creating 130

a gemstone appearance. Each cave features distinctly different formations including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, spiraling helictites, frostwork, cave popcorn, and even a rare boxwork formation. Experienced spelunkers are still finding and mapping unexplored areas of the bigger caves to this day. Within a short span of time you are taken into a different world where dripping water, sparkling crystals and illuminated passages reveal

the wonders of the Black Hillsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; underground. Visitors can also tour the underground shafts of nonworking gold mines in the Black Hills. Several gold mines offer guided tours to the public where you can see the actual stamp mill, crushers, and other mining equipment. These educational tours explain the mining processes used during the gold rush days of the late 1800s. Some of the mines teach gold panning techniques and visitors get to keep the gold they pan.

CAVE AND MINE TOURING TIPS: Wear comfortable walking shoes with non-slip soles, as guided tours usually require a half-mile walk on uneven surfaces. Tours have lit walkways, but some involve climbing up and down stairs or crawling through tight passageways. No food, drinks or pets are allowed. SOUTH DAKOTA CAVES All of South Dakotaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s limestone caves are found in or near the Black Hills. This is the only part of the state where limestone is found at the surface.

CAVE RESIDENTS Kept at a remarkably constant temperature, many caves in the Black Hills are home to a variety of animals, including bats. Although they have a bad reputation, bats are welcomed in the area, as they are important predators of insects.

Whether you are heading to or from the Black Hills, countless one-ofa-kind sites and experiences await you and your family along I-90. Follow along the mile markers from eastern South Dakota into Rapid City and the Black Hills then continue your roadtrip this season into Wyoming. In eastern South Dakota, Sioux Falls stands as the largest city of the state south of I-90. Tour the town with a stop at Falls Park to break up the drive.
