EYES ON THE ROAD The scenery throughout the Black Hills can be captivating with the surrounding sea of green. However, it's important to watch for wildlife and cyclists on the roadways. Sharp turns, narrow passing lanes, steep edges, and one-way tunnels are scattered along the way. Drive safe and keep your eyes on the road.

A SENSE OF PLACE

DISCOVER BEAUTY ON YOUR DRIVE In every direction, have your cameras ready as you enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Black Hills and area communities. People have understood the significance of the Black Hills since we first arrived. Because of a complex cultural history, different groups of residents and visitors have expressed different interpretations over time—but in the end, the area’s value has never been questioned. No matter your age or fitness level, the Black Hills are an ideal stage for a great vacation experience. This small mountain range offers everything from picturesque drives, to easy strolling trails, to significant peaks requiring solid hiking 14

or climbing gear. Because of the Native American belief that the Black Hills are sacred lands, many sites also have interesting—and sometimes controversial—stories. Curious visitors can uncover moving, exciting histories that will make for an unforgettable, educational Black Hills trip. THE “NEEDLES” A great place to dive into the Black Hills is via the Needles Highway, a 14-mile stretch of SD Highway 87 that leads to a group of granite spires known as the Cathedral Spires, or the

Needles, shown above. Marked by narrow tunnels and sharp turns, the road is a favorite for motorcycle and hearty bicycle enthusiasts. The Needles sport famous and often difficult climbing routes, many of which are not recommended for novices. Even so, the area beneath the spires is perfect for a family picnic and a hike! BLACK ELK PEAK Formerly known as Harney Peak, Black Elk Peak is the tallest mountain between the Rockies and the Swiss Alps. At the top, hikers can explore the stone fire tower and witness a magnificent view across the Black Elk Wilderness Area. was the country’s first National Monument, established in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Like many significant sites in the area, its name has a story. Native Americans have several names for the butte, including Bear’s House, and Great Gray Horn, among many others. The name Devils Tower came from a mistaken translation of a conversation with a Native speaker during an

1875 military expedition. While the Tower is a favorite climbing spot, attracting hundreds of climbers each summer, several Plains Indian tribes consider climbing a desecration of a sacred place. Therefore, most climbers honor a voluntary climbing ban during the month of June each year, when Native ceremonies are conducted around the breathtaking monument.

Atop Black Elk Peak, at 7,242 feet, the Civilian Conservation Corps built a fire tower from 1935 to 1938—with rocks hauled by hand from French Creek.

CHANGING NAMES Because General William S. Harney— after whom the peak was named in 1855— was known to have led attacks against Native Americans, the US Board on Geographic Names officially renamed the mountain in 2016. Nicholas Black Elk, the peak’s new (and original) namesake, was a revered Lakota holy man who received an important vision of human unity when he was only nine years old.

MAKE A SPLASH DURING YOUR VACATION Find a piece of serenity as you visit one of the six most popular lakes in the Black Hills. Take a swim, enjoy the sun, and stay a while! Although western South Dakota has only four natural lakes, 18 additional, engineered lakes and reservoirs provide both natural beauty and endless recreation. All year long, outdoor enthusiasts swim, boat, fish, water ski—and in winter, icefish. This season, make sure to pack your swimwear, along with sturdy water shoes for lake bottoms. Pristine bodies of water can be found throughout the Black Hills, from north to south. Here are our “main attractions.” 18

GHOST TOWNS Two former mining towns, founded in 1874-75, are now at the bottom of local lakes. Both Pactola and Sheridan, in the Central Hills, were populated by miners during the Gold Rush; when gold supplies dwindled, the towns were abandoned. The dam above Sheridan was finished in 1942, and whatever churches, schools, and businesses that remained were covered by the reservoir. Most of Pactola’s buildings, on the other hand, were removed before flooding in 1956. Only a CCC dynamite bunker remains underwater there.

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL

Discover a piece of history as you meet the four United States presidents carved in stone. Your visit will be treasured for a lifetime. Nestled into the side of granite hills, the carved faces of four United States presidents are a site to see for many—and an experience you will remember for a lifetime. Starting with a vision in the early 1920s, South Dakota State Historian Doane Robinson and others first envisioned Old West heroes carved into the granite spires of the Needles. Convinced of the project’s potential, the talented sculptor Gutzon Borglum decided that four presidents representing the first 150 years of American history would be the most appropriate subjects for carving. In the end, Rushmore Mountain near Keystone was 22

BLACKHILLSVISITOR.COM

chosen due to the size of the project. President Calvin Coolidge formally dedicated the project on August 10, 1927, and efforts continued on the carving of Mount Rushmore for the next fourteen years. NEARING COMPLETION When Borglum died in March 1941, officials turned the project over to his son, Lincoln, for completion. Due to the escalation of World War II and the lack of funds, the four figures were never completed. Borglum’s original vision included the Presidents sculpted down to their waists, but the famous monument remains iconic.

A VIEW TO REMEMBER Your trip to Mount Rushmore should include all the National Memorial has to offer. After you park, make your way up the stairs greeted by The Avenue of Flags—an aisle of 56 state flags and territories established in 1976 as part of the celebration of America’s Bicentennial. Then, say hello to Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln from the amphitheater viewing deck. After you walk through all there is to see outside, visit the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center and Museum and be entranced through interactive exhibits and two 125-seat theaters showing

CARVING A DREAM

Be a part of history in the making as you visit Crazy Horse Memorial—the world’s largest carving in progress near Custer. On June 3, 1948, a group of people gathered near Crazy Horse Mountain, previously known as Thunderhead Mountain, to witness the first blast—and to mark the beginning of a Dream that would span multiple generations. Among those attending were five of the nine remaining survivors of the Battle of the Little Big Horn and then-South Dakota Governor George T. Mickelson. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski had been asked by Chief Henry Standing Bear through written correspondence to come to the 24

sacred Paha Sapa (Black Hills) to carve a memorial honoring a Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse. Crazy Horse had been killed at Fort Robinson in 1877. In his letter to Korczak, Henry Standing Bear wrote, “My fellow chiefs and I would like the white man to know the red man has great heroes, also.” In May of 1947, Korczak started the project with only $174. Labor-intensive tasks included single-jacking (handdrilling) holes for the dedication blast and the countless blasts that followed. Later, he built a

741-step staircase, which he climbed several times daily— often to restart “Buda,” the air compressor at the bottom that powered his drill. Despite weather that could make work difficult, Korczak continued the monumental endeavor yearround (weather permitting). A FAMILY LEGACY From the beginning, Ruth (Ross) Ziolkowski supported Korczak in the realization of the Dream and assisted in multiple facets of it. The two even went to the extent of outlining the sculpture

and “around the house.” Still today, many Ziolkowski family members carry on the family legacy. Following Korczak’s death on October 20, 1982, Ruth made the well-considered decision to shift focus to Crazy Horse’s Face, a profile that would be visible proof of the project’s continuation. This effort to show the world was a success, and was marked by the dedication of Crazy Horse’s finished Face on June 3, 1998. This was one of many milestones that took place as Ruth carried on the leadership role. She remained heavily involved in all aspects until her death on May 21, 2014.

With Mountain measurements and binoculars in hand, Ruth directed construction by radio from the Visitor Center while Korczak dangled from a rope nearly one mile away, painting on the Mountain. Ruth and Korczak were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1950 and started a family at Crazy Horse; by the mid-1960s, they had ten children. The children contributed to the progressing Dream; while the boys helped Korczak on the Mountain, the girls assisted Ruth in the Visitor Complex

CURRENT PROGRESS The current Carving focus is on Crazy Horse’s Hand and the Horse’s Mane area. Rock removal in this delicate area is labor intensive; in many ways, similar to work on Crazy Horse’s Face. This involves a great deal of drilling, and uses a process referred to as “feathers and wedges” that removes rows of blocks—visible from the Viewing Veranda at the Visitor Complex less than one mile away. Blocking-out the sculpture has progressed to the benches, an area measured in 20-foot increments starting from the top of Crazy Horse’s Head. Blasting is most common in this phase of rock removal. In all the effort over the years, the man called Crazy Horse has been steadily emerging out of the stone walls. As though in response to the question he was once asked by a white trader, “Where are your lands now?” firmly Crazy Horse answers visually in stone with his original response: “My lands are where my dead lie buried.” A LOOK AT THE FUTURE Today, the Dream from long ago is still embedded in those who remain at Crazy Horse, including a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors, two of Korczak and Ruth’s daughters who serve as CEOs, as well as many dedicated, skilled professionals. A project that began simply with a letter has grown into an icon of history, culture, and humanity; and it continues to possess farreaching implications for the state and nation.

while you are exploring, and do not approach—they’re wild! To get a better view, take a jeep tour! This family adventure will bring you close up to the magnificent wildlife in the park. Visit in late spring and early summer and you may be able to see the baby buffalo prancing around the pastures. Open year round, the park has nine campgrounds filled with an assortment of set up options whether you have a tent, RV or motorhome. Cabins and resorts are also

available and perfect for family gatherings. Take advantage of each places' accommodations like hitting a nearby trail, kayaking at a nearby lake, or even going horseback riding. A great hike to find is the Lover’s Leap Trail—a threemile loop that has views of the spires and Black Elk Peak. After you’ve stopped by the Visitor Center, be sure to check out the Peter Norbeck Outdoor Education Center. This new building will be the perfect place for younger visitors to learn about the outside world and surrounding park land. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast exploring the countless miles of trails, or simply traveling through to see the scenic views, Custer State Park has something special for every Black Hills adventurer.

WILDLIFE Over the past 90 years, the park has become a model of conservancy and land use with the reintroduction of elk, bison, pronghorn antelope, Rocky Mountain big horn sheep and goats into the preserve. BADLANDS & WALL DRUG ALL SIGNS LEAD TO WALL DRUG

Drive through the scenic, rugged landscape of ancient sediments, then stop by one of America's favorite roadside attractions. You’re traveling across the vast state of South Dakota and you see billboard after billboard announcing the upcoming attraction of Wall Drug. In fact, there are signs all over the word telling you how many miles it would take to get there—from Afghanistan and Kenya, all the way to Antarctica. But before you head to Wall, stop seven miles south at Badlands National Park and see the spectacular sunrise. Millions of visitors each year are welcomed to the Badlands— known worldwide for its natural collection of fossils and geological formations, stretching 30

BLACKHILLSVISITOR.COM

244,300 acres. Whether you’re going to choose a trail to explore, drive the scenic loop, or take a break on an overlook to capture a photo—the park is one stop you will not want to miss out on. Native Americans have long used the Badlands area as a hunting ground. Lakota Native Americans have even found fossilized seashells and turtle shells and correctly theorized that the Badlands had once been underwater. Today, you won’t find any alligators in the park, but you may catch a glimpse of local wildlife such as bighorn sheep,

bison, prairie dogs, and the rare black-footed ferret. Black-footed ferrets once numbered in the thousands but were brought to the brink of extinction in the 1960s due to habitat loss and disease. In 1979, they were declared extinct until they were reintroduced into the Badlands from Wyoming. When hiking in the Badlands, remember to bring water and sun protection, wear appropriate footwear, and stay a respectful distance from wildlife. A good rule of thumb to remember: if the wildlife is reacting to your presence, you are too close!

With the rugged landscape, lack of water, and odd rock formations, French-Canadian fur trappers referred to it as les mauvais terres pour traverse meaning “bad lands to travel through.”

ENTRANCE FEES Weekly passes to Badlands National Park are $20 per vehicle, or get an annual pass to the park for $40. (Group rates and motorcycle rates are available.) BEN REIFEL VISITOR CENTER While you are at the Badlands, stop by the Visitor Center open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Here you will be able to see interactive exhibits, view a film in the theatre, and visit the bookstore.

After your drive through Badland National Park, follow the billboards to Wall Drug. Getting its beginning in 1931, Dorothy and Ted Hustead opened Wall’s one and only drugstore on the edge of the small town. After business had been steadily slow, the Husteads posted a sign nearby that offered free ice water to travelers venturing across the state. The rest is history!

As you enter the boardwalk in front of the drugstore, you can almost imagine what it was like years ago. Now, the roadside attraction is filled with retail outlets, a restaurant, a café, and a place for families to get outside and play. After you’ve seen the T. Rex, tasted a true buffalo burger, and purchased a jackalope souvenir, you will be ready to make the rest of your trek.

DON’T MISS IT Be sure to grab free ice water, 5-cent coffee, and an infamous homemade donut when you are at Wall Drug. They are just a few local favorite treats that will leave you wanting more!

Getting their mythical beginnings in the 1930s, the jackalope has become an icon at Wall Drug.

THE MAMMOTH SITE NATURAL LANDMARK

Come face-to-face with creatures from thousands of years ago as you visit the in situ (on site) museum exhibits in Hot Springs. More than 26,000 years ago, Ice Age fauna were trapped and died in a spring-fed pond near the southwest edge of Hot Springs. Over the course of the next 350 to 700 years, the hole filled with sediments and mammoth remains. For centuries the bones lay buried—until discovered by chance in 1974. While excavating for a housing development, earth-moving equipment exposed one 32

BLACKHILLSVISITOR.COM

of South Dakota’s greatest treasures. The Site was found to contain the largest concentration of Columbian and woolly mammoth bones discovered in the world. Fortunately, through the work of local citizens, 14 acres of land now known as The Mammoth Site was preserved as a resource for scientific study and in 1980 the Site added to the list of National Natural Landmarks in the United States.

Today the location is not only an attraction for visitors, it is an indoor working paleontological dig site and Accredited Museum, laboratory, and research facility where paleontologists and volunteers preserve these historic relics. Enclosed and protected by a climate-controlled building, the sinkhole and exhibits attract visitors year-round. The bones are on display as they were discovered for an in situ exhibit.

The town was built by and for 82

BELLE FOURCHE A WESTERN PIONEER COMMUNITY

Defined as "the Beautiful Forks" in French, Belle Fourche (pronounced “Bell Foosh”) is noted for being the geographic Center of the Nation – marked by a granite monument and a path of flags. Sheriff and rancher Seth Bullock persuaded the railroad to build through his ranch, ultimately creating the western cow town. In 1893, more range cattle were shipped out by rail than at any other railhead with a record of 4,700 carloads. As the population grew, Orman Dam – also known as the Belle Fourche Resevoir – was created giving the agriculture community a large boost. Today, many residents enjoy camping and spending the day at the dam swimming, fishing, and boating. Belle Fourche is proudly known for their fourth of July celebrations. Red, white, and 86

blue adorn the streets for the mile-long parade. Enjoy the carnival downtown filled with family-friendly rides and don’t miss the city-wide barbecue. Then for the finale – the Black Hills Roundup, one of the oldest continuously held outdoor rodeos in America. Top-ranked cowboys and cowgirls come from all over to compete in many events including barrel racing, bareback riding, bull riding and more. World-class livestock are provided and National Finals Rodeo (NFR) bucking stock is brought in to challenge champion riders. Are engines more your thing? Plan to attend the Center of the Nation All Car Rally held in June. Visitors from a 12-state area display nearly 200 antique cars, trucks, and hot rods. It’s the real thing, making any dedicated car enthusiast’s dream come true.

CENTER OF THE NATION Although the monument is placed in Belle Fourche, the actual center of the nation is 21 miles outside of town on private land in a nearby pasture. If you're looking to visit the remote location, follow the directions on the city's chamber of commerce site and look for a patriotic sign and a US Flag. Watch out for cow pies!

STURGIS A CITY OF RIDERS

Founded in 1876, Sturgis was named after Fort Meade commander Major Samuel D. Sturgis. Fort Meade was a nearby cavalry post established to protect those who were flocking to the Black Hills after the discovery of gold, and later became the home for the 7th Cavalry after the massacre at Little Bighorn. Today, Sturgis is defined by its duality. Serving as both a mountain town and a ranch community, it's nestled in the northeastern Black Hills. All summer, Sturgis is a destination for riders from all over the country. Sturgis is a small town of about 6,800 people. But, for one outrageous week in August, hundreds of thousands of bikers and vendors descend on Sturgis— making it one of the most famous motorcycle rallies in 88

BLACKHILLSVISITOR.COM

the world. What started in 1938 as a dirt-track motorcycle race has evolved into South Dakota’s largest tourism event and has spread throughout the entire Black Hills, keeping its focus in the Sturgis community. As the month continues, sports cars fill the streets in late August and early September for the annual Sturgis Mustang Rally. Participants in this event enjoy everything from autocross, drag racing, burnouts, auctions, and anything else they can imagine. But events aren’t the only thing the city of riders is known for. Their industrial park is home to some of the premiere gun makers and ammunition manufacturers in the nation. Sturgis has a great deal to offer its visitors. Discover a historic city rich in the tradition of legendary riders.

NATURAL WONDERS Mato Paha “Bear Mountain” is the name given by the Lakota to the sacred site of Bear Butte State Park outside of Sturgis. The park is still important in American Indian ceremonies and offers great hikes for visitors. From the 4,426-foot summit, you can view four states in the distance.

Fondly called “The Heart of the Hills”, Hill City has a strong past of discovery. After the gold rush had moved north, tin had been found in the rock and the industrial railroad moved in. Hill City has continued to evolve into a geological hub of exploration, as well. Researchers from the Black Hills Institute discovered the largest T-Rex skeleton, named “Sue”, in 1990. Although the fossils has been moved to Chicago, Illinois – Hill City displays its very own T-Rex named Stan. Today, people near and far come for the “Hill City experience.” Become accustomed to the whistle of the authentic steam locomotive on its way to and from Keystone. Enjoy the tastes of the city, too! Hill City is filled with locallyowned restaurants with unique flavor, and the beer and wine is award-winning.

Today, millions visit the monument each year, and many of them travel through Keystone. While only about 350 people live here year-round, the village comes to life with adventure during the summer season. Here, you can view the gorgeous scenery of the pinecovered Hills from a chairlift, play miniature golf, ride the trails on horseback, and take a helicopter ride. But the fun 90

CUSTER

MINUTES FROM ADVENTURE

This mile-high mountain town benefits from its location—a prime, central setting on the edge of Custer State Park, crisscrossed with miles of trails and backcountry roads left behind by early western pioneers, ranchers, and loggers. Custer was the first town in the Black Hills, established in 1875, named after the infamous Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer—and is the site of one of the major encampments of the Black Hills Expedition, which made the first public discovery of gold in 1874 in nearby French Creek leading the way to the Black Hills Gold Rush. A street wide enough to turn a team of oxen was requested by the gold prospectors when the city of Custer was formally founded in 1875. This established a wide thoroughfare, and created a 92

150-foot wide Main Street. Visitors who choose Custer as a hub are minutes from the best climbs, trails, and family fun of the Black Hills. Stay in the town itself or in the Park, which offers unique lodging, dining, swimming, camping, fishing, and shopping opportunities. In no time at all, you can be scaling a granite needle, hiking to the top of the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains, or heading off-road for a real wilderness adventure—and then heading back into town for a lovely dinner. Keep the exploration going when you dash into the park for the Black Hills Playhouse summer stock theater—or ride your motorcycle on some of the country’s most acclaimed curves. Watch the sun set over nearby Crazy Horse Memorial or Mount Rushmore. Sound good?

HOT SPRINGS

SOUTHERN GATEWAY OF THE BLACK HILLS

Originally called Minnekahta (warm waters) by its founders in 1879, Hot Springs is located on the southeast edge of the Black Hills. Early town entrepreneurs touted the health benefits of the city’s warm, dry climate, and healing warm water spas. With the arrival of the railroad in 1891, thousands of people came into the town for the medicinal attributes of the healing water. The city's Historic District was largely built during this boom, and includes beautiful sandstone buildings. Today, visitors can still relax in the historic spas that utilize the natural warm waters from the springs below – like Evans Plunge, the largest natural warm-water (87 degrees) indoor swimming pool in the entire world. Another famous attraction is the world’s largest mammoth research facility, the Mammoth 94

After you've seen the mammoths, watch nearly 500 rescued mustangs run free at The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary. A SIP OF LOCAL FLAVOR Whether you are looking for a cocktail after dinner or touring different wine and beer venues, enjoy the local spin on classic drinks. WINE The wineries located in and around the Hills provide the perfect excuse for you to explore something other than the typical. Whether you are a “grape novice” or an experienced wine connoisseur, you will love tasting the different flavors available here. The Black Hills Wine Trail along Highway 385 connects the charming tasting rooms in Hill City and Custer to the tasting rooms in Deadwood. For first-time wine tasting, you’re in a great area—as the 112

BLACKHILLSVISITOR.COM

Black Hills tasting rooms tend to be a laid back experience. Personable, well-informed guides will introduce you to the wines the winery produces, along with the local stories behind each label. Oftentimes, the sommelier will start with whites, then pour reds, and finish with dessert wines. Find your favorite and take a bottle (or two) home! BEER Each year, new breweries pop up in the Hills, offering a variety of craft beer and guided

tours of their facilities. Many local breweries offer exclusive choices for beer tasting. Watch for both free individual samples and “beer flights”—a rack of four or more testers, usually for purchase. Most breweries will also fill and seal your growler for you to enjoy later. In the warmer months, expect lighter, crisper beers, some of which feature locally grown, hand-chosen ingredients. As the season begins to change, enjoy heavier tastes of porters and stouts in addition to classic IPAs, lagers, wheat beers, and more.

Enjoy the array of drinks in the Black Hills from mixologists, winemakers, and brewmasters.

SAMPLE SUGGESTIONS Step away from the grapes you know for a little while, and try some of the area’s award-winning flavors. Allow your taste buds to journey through the countless options of wines, starting with the lightest whites and progressing to the heaviest reds. A sip of water and a plain cracker between tastes will help to clear your palate. A UNIQUE FLAVOR Brewmasters in the Black Hills claim it’s the local water that gives their beer its unique flavor—making these craft brews one-of-akind drinks that you don’t want to miss. COCKTAILS Enjoy a martini, margarita, or whatever you can imagine at local spots throughout the Black Hills. From high-class night clubs, to laid back bars, the mixologists at each venue in the communities around the area have prepared unique concoctions you’re sure to enjoy. DISTILLERIES During the roaring 20s, the Wartime Prohibition Act put a ban on the sale of all alcoholic beverages—launching the culture of speakeasy lounges

and distilleries. Today, there are only a handful of distilleries to experience one-of-a-kind liquors. From whiskey and bourbon to vodka and rum, tasting the local flavors of moonshine the area has to offer is an experience all on its own. Many local venues host a number of events throughout the year, too. Visitors can experience live music, stand-up comedy shows—complete with complimentary tastings—and themed food-and-drink pairing dinners. Be sure to visit our calendar on page 8 for more information.

DON’T SPOIL IT Remember the elements when purchasing your take-home beverages; a hot car can ruin them. If you have a full day of sightseeing ahead of you, ask the wineries and breweries you visit about their options for shipping your purchase to your home. Then, you will be able to enjoy the rest of your trip, worry free.

GOING UNDERGROUND

The Black Hills were uplifted several times over geologic history, starting at the end of the age of dinosaurs, about 66 million years ago. On and off until about six million years ago, the Paha Sapa Limestone was elevated above the water table—when rain fell, it dissolved the stone, causing caves. See Jewel Cave National Monument, Rushmore Cave, Wind Cave National Park, Black Hills Caverns, and Wonderland Cave. See more about caves on page 130.

HISTORY ON DISPLAY DINOSAURS, PLANES & MORE

Step back in time and see life as it was long ago as you visit the exhibits at countless Black Hills museums. The Black Hills are rich with history. Start with the museums focusing on the area’s pioneering days of covered wagons and homesteading in the rolling plains. Here you will find schoolhouse settings, chuckwagon displays, and so much more. Are fossils more up your alley? We’ve got that, too! Dinosaurs, mammoths, and numerous geological findings have been discovered right here in the Black Hills and are a site to see no matter which community you are visiting. Many of these facilities are 126

still active research facilities, too–so take advantage of the opportunity to see work in progress! If you’re a fan of all things transportation, the Black Hills will have something for you, too. The area is a popular destination for motor rallies of all kinds, from Porsche and Mustangs to classic cars and motorcycles. Check out or calendar on page 10 for events that can pair with your museum experience. Set your sites to the skies, too and visit the aviation exhibits at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Give your self plenty of time

when you choose to explore one of our museums. Each display will have informational insights to what life was like, what products were used for. Children will love the interactive scenes at many of the establishments. Take a guided tour, take part in a workshop or class, or watch a documentary screening of each topic the museum will cover. Not only will it be fun, but also educational. From Visitor Centers to museums, you are sure to enjoy the stories of the past during your visit.

CAVES & MINES AN UNDERGROUND ADVENTURE

Head back into the days of the Black Hills Gold Rush and explore the area’s caves and mines with knowledgeable guides. Limestone is a soluble rock that encircles the Black Hills. For hundreds of thousands of years, water has worked like a chisel to create these underground masterpieces and miles of passageways. The limestone caves of this area are among the deepest and longest in the world and contain some the most unusual formations geologists have ever seen. Dozens of calcite crystal caves can be found in the Black Hills. These caves have translucent calcite crystal deposits, creating 130

BLACKHILLSVISITOR.COM

a gemstone appearance. Each cave features distinctly different formations including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, spiraling helictites, frostwork, cave popcorn, and even a rare boxwork formation. Experienced spelunkers are still finding and mapping unexplored areas of the bigger caves to this day. Within a short span of time you are taken into a different world where dripping water, sparkling crystals and illuminated passages reveal

the wonders of the Black Hills— underground. Visitors can also tour the underground shafts of nonworking gold mines in the Black Hills. Several gold mines offer guided tours to the public where you can see the actual stamp mill, crushers, and other mining equipment. These educational tours explain the mining processes used during the gold rush days of the late 1800s. Some of the mines teach gold panning techniques and visitors get to keep the gold they pan.

CAVE AND MINE TOURING TIPS: Wear comfortable walking shoes with non-slip soles, as guided tours usually require a half-mile walk on uneven surfaces. Tours have lit walkways, but some involve climbing up and down stairs or crawling through tight passageways. No food, drinks or pets are allowed. SOUTH DAKOTA CAVES All of South Dakota’s limestone caves are found in or near the Black Hills. This is the only part of the state where limestone is found at the surface.

Main image: Over 142.75 miles of passages have been mapped making Wind Cave the sixth longest cave in the world. Inset image: Open caves are scattered throughout the Hills for explorers to enjoy at their own leisure.

SOUTH DAKOTA'S STATE SPORT RODEO IN THE BLACK HILLS

Break out those boots and saddle up as you head to a high-energy rodeo event in numerous area communities. Step out of the city routine this summer and enjoy an AllAmerican cowboy experience while you are on vacation in the Black Hills. Rodeo action began in South Dakota in the late 1890’s when area ranchers competed against each other in everyday chores. Events included aspects of every day ranch life including cow milking, branding, and doctoring livestock. Captivating audiences with entertainment, rodeo has evolved into a 134

BLACKHILLSVISITOR.COM

nationwide sport. Spectators from all over the world watch competitors in individual and team events. Calf roping, bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling and bronc riding are just a few you can see at a rodeo this summer. Be sure to watch the half time show! Rodeo clowns often act out skits, kids will compete in stick horse races and even mutton busting–where they hold onto a sheep for a mock “bull” ride. Cowboys and cowgirls from all over the nation compete

in local, professional rodeos, several of which have been honored as the best in the nation. Participants go to local and state rodeos to earn money to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Once a cowboy/ cowgirl makes the cut, they become a “card holder”, and are given preference at rodeos. Each rodeo is a serious competition, but big on family fun, too. So, round up the family, pull on your boots, and embrace the culture as you head out to the rodeo!

MUST STOP DINING

ALONG THE WAY SOUTH DAKOTA TO WYOMING

Whether you are heading to or from the Black Hills, countless one-ofa-kind sites and experiences await you and your family along I-90. Follow along the mile markers from eastern South Dakota into Rapid City and the Black Hills then continue your roadtrip this season into Wyoming. In eastern South Dakota, Sioux Falls stands as the largest city of the state south of I-90. Tour the town with a stop at Falls Park to break up the drive. As you approach the Missouri River, take a pit stop at the Chamberlain Rest Area—the new location of Dignity, a 50-foot sculpture of a Native American woman wearing a traditional star quilt. Look to the north to view the Chamberlain Bridge, a historic connector for the towns 138

of Chamberlain and Oacoma. It was originally completed in 1925 and carried US Highway 16; in 1953 the bridge became the I-90 Business Loop. Near Kadoka, to the south as you follow I-90 through western South Dakota, the Badlands appear. Interstate Exit 131 is the east entrance into Badlands National Park and the Visitor Center of Minuteman Missile Site. Wall Drug is where you will find everything from souvenir shops to a giant animated T. Rex and plenty of space for the kids to unwind after a long day on the road.

Rapid City, the second largest city in South Dakota, has something for everyone. Fine dining, unparalleled shopping, festivals and special events, recreation, and entertainment come together in the city in new and unforgettable ways. From Rapid City through the foothills of the Black Hills— to Sturgis, Whitewood, and Spearfish, and into the Bear Lodge Mountains as you near Sundance, Wyoming—drivers cross the northern part of the “Red Racetrack.” Believed by the Lakota Sioux to encircle the entire Black Hills, the legendary track was the site of the “Great Race”

Old Faithful is one of the most predictable features on Earth— erupting every 35 to 120 minutes in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.

This part of Wyoming is where Buffalo Bill Cody, along with diverse cultures associated with Western life, are celebrated. Vistas are spectacular, and opportunities for recreation and entertainment abound. Cody is also known as the eastern gateway to our nation’s first established National Park in 1872—Yellowstone.
