Public art runs as wild as buffalo in downtown Rapid City. With more than 10 utility boxes dripping in colorful local artwork, a 9,000-pound interactive limestone sculpture in Memorial Park, a two-story mural depicting the Badlands painted on the Elks Theatre building, the 21 hand-carved granite pieces that compose The Sculpture Project, and Art Alley’s constantly evolving canvas— everything is fair game.

No visit to Downtown Rapid City would be complete without a stroll down its streets. Breathe in the fresh air and take in the sites. Visit the artfully sculpted presidential statues. Enjoy the cascade of colors created by over 130 hanging baskets and planters. Downtown is teeming with history just waiting to be unraveled. On the edge of Downtown you will find the Memorial Park Promenade, a 27.5-acre green that is filled with the Memorial pond and fountain, formal rose garden, statues, the Berlin Wall Memorial, Veterans Memorial and band shell. The park serves as an urban link to the Downtown area, Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and Journey Museum. The property for Memorial Park was acquired by the City of Rapid City after the 1972 flood, and was developed as a memorial to the 238 people who lost their lives during the flood.
