It was the land that first brought settlers to Custer when gold was discovered, and visitors can still learn to pan for gold in Custer State Park. Perhaps you want to experience the area around Custer like the first settlers did? There is no shortage of trails for hiking and horseback riding near town. In fact, there are dozens of miles of trail in our area, with a few originating within city limits. We also have multiple access points to the 109-mile-long Mickelson Trail. Need a little more adrenaline in your adventure? Rentals in town will get you the highspeed rush you’re seeking. We have slingshots available to whip around corners, or rugged ATVs and UTVs to traverse miles of trail with agility and power. Not only can you rent vehicles of every sort, stick around and experience one of our many car shows and

Not only do we have worldclass scenery above ground, we also have spectacular views underground. Both Wind Cave — our nation’s first cave designated as a national park — and Jewel Cave are a short drive from town. They offer an array of geological features rarely found elsewhere.

Nearby Sylvan and Stockade Lakes are the perfect place for all kinds of water sports. Enjoy kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, or just good

Custer State Park is home to one of the world’s largest bison herds. There are about 1,300 bison in the park.

Locals host annual celebrations for the gold rush with Gold Discovery Days in July, and the defeat of the pine beetle with the Burning Beetle in January. No matter the season or the reason, Custer should be the festive center of all your Black Hills adventures.

In January Custer hosts the Bark Beetle Blues. It’s a homage to the blue tint in wood eaten by the bug, but also to the devastation it’s wrought on nearby forests.

Nearby Crazy Horse Memorial® is the largest Mountain Carving in Progress in the world.

Every town in the hills has its own flavor — but Custer took the idea literally! Custer is now host to our own restaurant week. Come by in February to spend your days in our beautiful scenery, then dive into delicacies crafted by some of the best chefs in the Black Hills. Locally sourced game meat is popular, but visitors will find plenty of seafood and vegetarian options. Some restaurants like to pair dinner with local wines or beers as well.

Big Rock Park in Custer covers 73 acres — including Pageant Hill and the Custer Skywalk trail. It rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramic views.

There’s Gold in the Hills

The first real interest in Keystone was in 1876, when placer gold was discovered nearby in Battle Creek. While placer gold was plentiful, it was also difficult to extract, so local prospectors moved towards underground lode mining. This shift increased the amount of gold coming out of Keystone exponentially — but it also came with an increase in miner injuries and deaths. It was a price they were willing to pay, however, and the population of Keystone soon grew to over 2,000 residents. Walking into Keystone’s mines today is a walk through

Big Thunder Gold Mine wasn’t the most prolific in town, but it was the safest.

Gold! There are two forms of gold found around Keystone: placer and lode. Placer gold is residual flakes or nuggets found by panning in river beds. This form was first discovered 2 miles east of town and is abundant in the area, but the depth of deposits make placer gold impractical to extract. Lode gold forms in veins within the earth’s surface and is more profitable because of larger deposit sizes. However, the use of explosives and risk of tunnels caving in makes it dangerous to obtain.

Nearby Needles Highway took an estimated 150,000 pounds of dynamite to construct.

Traverse History Along the Mickelson Trail Railways supported the gold mining industry that built the Black Hills, but they fell into disuse when mines closed. We’ve converted them into the Mickelson Trail so you can explore our communities while reveling in the nature we love. The constant boom and bust of industry is nothing new to the Black Hills, but one in particular has been a backbone to our region: railroads. When gold was discovered here in the 1870s, the railroad followed shortly after to transport mined materials. Passenger and freight transport were close behind, and for a while there was almost always a train passing through the Black Hills. By 1930, however, most of the narrow gauge lines throughout the Black Hills were abandoned due to mine closures. The remaining lines in our area were almost completely abandoned by the 1980s. Tracks stood empty as their fate was determined.

A Second Chance at Life

Luckily, a local outdoor enthusiast group saw potential in our defunct railways and started a campaign to turn them into a trail system. With the backing of then-governor

It took less than 1 year to build the railroad in the early 1890s, but it took 15 years to develop the Mickelson Trail.

The first 6 miles of trail were dedicated in 1991, but the trail wasn’t officially declared complete until 1998.

George S. Mickelson, the project picked up steam in the late 80s. When efforts stalled, the Rails to Trails Conservancy group stepped in. Their help and legal support was the push we needed. Soon after, the Black Hills became home to one of the premier rail-trails in the country.

Using the Trail

Today, there are 15 trailheads throughout the Black Hills. While mostly primitive, trailheads provide parking, picnic tables and vault toilets. Biking is the most common activity, but runners, horseback riders and even bird watchers enjoy use of the area. If you don’t want to do an out-and-back ride, there are businesses throughout the Southern Hills who are happy to help shuttle you and your bike to a trailhead. They can also assist in rentals and have a range of gear on hand for purchase.

George S. Mickelson was South Dakota’s 28th Governor who perished in a plane crash in 1993. The trail is named in his honor.

From start to finish, the Mickelson has almost 100 railroad bridges, 4 tunnels, 2,800 feet of elevation change and 109 miles of trail — make sure you plan out your trip so you don’t overexert yourself.

Experience the Grandeur at Mount Rushmore

It’s a bucket list item for Americans and foreigners alike — there are few sculptures in the world that are as impressive as the Shrine of Democracy. While most of South Dakota’s economy is powered by agriculture, the Black Hills aren’t as conducive to farming. Mount Rushmore was originally designed to bring tourists to the area and boost the local economy. Now, almost 80 years after its completion, it is one of the most popular national memorials in the country.

Shaping the Granite

Mount Rushmore is the perfect balance of art and engineering. Every inch of the faces was pulled out of the mountain using dynamite, drilled into shape and finally finished by hand. The process took 14 years and over 400 men and women to complete. Even then, the mountain was declared complete before it fully realized Gutzon Borglum’s vision. A combination of unsuitable rock, lack of funding, and the escalation of WWII caused the drilling to stop. In the fall of 1941, they officially declared the memorial finished.

There is a nightly lighting ceremony during summer months, including a patriotic video and flag folding.

Dig Into History

If you’re wondering what the original design was, you’re in luck: a visit to the Sculptor’s Studio on site has a 1/12th scale model of the mountain as envisioned by Borglum. You can also see authentic tools used for carving the mountain. The Sculptor’s Studio isn’t the only place you should visit while on site. Don’t miss the Lincoln Borglum Visitor’s Center, where you can see a 14 minute film about the creation of the mountain. The Presidential Trail is a great way to get up close to the presidents if you’re ready for a short walk — just know there are 422 stairs involved. If your kids take part in the Junior Ranger program, make sure you pick up a booklet at one of the information desks so they can earn a new badge. After you’ve explored the memorial, come back to the main plaza for snacks and souvenirs. You’ll find a variety of fare for lunch or dinner, and a variety of shirts, postcards, books and toys to take home.

Custer State Park is the oldest and largest state park in South Dakota. We were once home to a zoo, but we’ve ditched the cages and we invite you to frolic in our spectacular open wilderness.

Captivating Critters

We are home to the secondlargest buffalo herd in the country. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see them — we have over 71,000 acres of land — your chances are better here than anywhere else. The park is also home to elk, coyotes, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, pronghorns, prairie dogs and two species of deer. We have a small pack of burros, too. They’re descended from a herd that used to take visitors up Black Elk Peak, but now they mostly pose for photos and beg for snacks.

Take a Drive

We have three stunning drives around the park, and we hope you’ll have time for all of them. Wildlife Loop is where you’ll get to see the animals that call

Baby buffalo are born in the spring. Their light, orangish-brown hair color has earned them the nickname “cinnamons.”

Custer State Park home. Even on a day where the animals are scarce, enjoy a drive on the prairie’s edge through the rolling hills and creek valleys. Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway are more about the scenery. Iron Mountain Road was intentionally crafted to showcase all the best parts of the Black Hills to visitors. They’ll take you an hour each, but they’re can’t-miss masterpieces of engineering that prove roads can be art.

Stay a While

There are many options for lodging in the park, including 9 campgrounds, 5 lodges and 6 well-appointed cabins and ranch houses. Wherever you stay, you’ll have stunning views. The Game Lodge is worth a stop even if you don’t stay, but if you do you’ll be in good company: President Eisenhower stayed for a weekend, and President Coolidge stayed so long in 1927 it was known as the “Summer White House.”

The number one rule while enjoying Custer State Park: do not approach or harass wildlife. Buffalo, especially, are dangerous. They may seem docile, but they are quick to charge and can reach speeds of 40mph. Rangers recommend you stay 100 yards from any animal.

With a giant mammoth greeting you at the road, The Mammoth Site is an ancient treasure in the Black Hills you won’t want to miss while you are visiting the area. This active dig site is a gem of the Black Hills and is something unique to the area you won’t find elsewhere across the nation.

The Ice Age and Beyond

Researchers from all over the world visit this state-of-theart research facility to learn more about Ice Age (11,000+ years old) fossils. To date, at least 61 mammoths have been discovered and excavated here, along with the remains of two Giant short-faced bears, camel, llama, and a vast amount of invertebrates. When you visit, you’ll start in our Learning Center. Opening its doors during the spring of 2015, the Center includes two 53-seat theaters where you will be able to view a short, 10-minute HD introductory video. The film walks you through the history of each of the findings at the Site.

Enjoy a bite to eat at the Bonebed Bistro, which offers a variety of food including pizza, hot dogs, nachos, and daily specials.

After seeing the film, walk around the in situ exhibits (fossils still in place from where they had been originally found) and watch the scientists and crew as they work on uncovering Ice Age fauna. Tour the facility via accessible walkways that provide a close-up view of the fossils and the work being conducted at the Site. Guests can tour at their own pace with a self-guided tour, courtesy of pamphlets provided by The Mammoth Site or by scanning the selfguided QR codes at each stop. Explore at your own pace as you make your way to the Ice Age Exhibit Hall featuring a working lab, full size replicas of mammoths, short videos, and site history. Visit the prep Laboratory where you can view work being done. Looking for more fun? You might be wondering what, exactly, chislic is. If you’ve never heard of it that’s alright; it is a dish rarely found outside of South Dakota. It’s thought to have immigrated here with the Germans from Russia. While recipes vary, it is generally cubed red meat marinated and grilled or fried. Sometimes it’s served on a skewer or toothpicks, usually just in a basket with fries. It’s a regional delicacy that you shouldn’t miss.

Game meat tends to dry out more than beef due to its lean nature. While land mammals tend to steal the show, the Southern Hills are also home to several lakes, and fishing is a popular pastime here. Even if you don’t have time to catch one, keep an eye out for walleye on menus. As our state fish, you’ll find many locals have almost a reverence for it; which means it’s served in a way that lets the flavor shine. For lunch you’ll usually find it fried with a side of tartar sauce and fries. For dinner, grilled or baked with lemon and a side is a simple

way to enjoy walleye without overpowering it.

Kuchen

As the official state dessert of South Dakota, the only thing as varied as the flavors of kuchen is its pronunciation. Even locals who have eaten it all their life will disagree on how to say it. Some will say “koo-ghen,” others insist “kuh-tchen,” but we all agree to call it delicious. It is historically a European dessert that immigrated to our state in the late 1800s. History and semantics aside, there’s no denying the staying power of this tasty dessert. Kuchen is a sort of fruit pie, made from sweet dough and a custard filling. Berries are a popular addition to the filling, but apple and rhubarb are also local favorites.

Food truck havens The recent popularity of food trucks around the country certainly hasn’t missed the Black Hills. Truck offerings vary, but some of our most-loved in the Southern Hills sell Mexican food and BBQ. There’s always something new to explore, with rotating menus and new trucks coming into town all the time! While most of our trucks maintain a nomadic lifestyle, they regularly post their whereabouts on social media. Many will rotate around local breweries and parks, so keep your eyes peeled!

While South Dakota’s economy is driven by agriculture, there are few grape varieties that do well here. Luckily, that doesn’t stop our wineries from producing unique, awardwinning wines year after year. Many of our original settlers were experienced in winemaking, and in true pioneer fashion they brought what they knew and adapted it to prairie living. This is why you’ll find wines around the Southern Hills made from what we call prairie berries. As drinking tastes change, our breweries and wineries adapt. If you love a crisp, bubbly seltzer, you’re in luck! Several businesses offer them alongside their other taps and bottles. You can find ciders, meads and non-alcoholic offerings on menus as well. You’ll see some breweries are situated right next door to wineries and vice versa. Some businesses have expanded their expertise from one craft into another over the years. This means you’ll be able to find both beer and wine in some places, or you can try both by walking a short distance between establishments.

Firehouse is the oldest operating brewery in South Dakota, and they offer craft beer, awardwinning wine and now camping and lodging!

Since many breweries and wineries also offer food, kids and family under legal drinking age are allowed. Some even cater to younger guests by offering sodas and other hand-crafted non-alcoholic beverages. On top of that, you’ll find inviting lawns and yard games everyone can enjoy. A growing number of establishments in the Southern Hills also welcome your favorite furry friend. Most will require your dog to remain leashed while on the premises and expect the common courtesy of cleaning up after them. Make sure you call ahead or check individual businesses’ websites, as policies may change.

Red Beer Why would you add tomato juice to a beer? Around here, the question might really be why wouldn’t you? It’s a seemingly strange habit to outsiders but second-nature to locals. Red beer is especially popular for those who like an easy brunch cocktail. You might not find it on a menu, but most bars and restaurants will know what you mean if you ask. Many use simple tomato juice, but clamato and Bloody Mary mix are also common.
