WHEN TO START Begin the search for your gown, accessories, and jewelry up to nine months before the wedding day to give ample time to avoid rush-order fees. Some dress designers require six months to produce a gown; others may be longer or even quicker, so be sure to ask. Order early to allow sufficient time for your gown to be received, altered, and steamed. Keep with classic looks or be fashion forward. Utilize their expertise to ensure selection of a style that is right for you. Be sure to call ahead, as some bridal
salons require appointments, and those that do not will be able to recommend a time to visit when you will receive one-onone attention. TIPS FOR TRYING ON GOWNS There are certain tips that can make the day go smoothly and potentially reduce the amount of time it may take to find the perfect dress. • W ear your hair similar to the style you have in mind for your wedding. • G o without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean. •W ear a supportive, well-constructed strapless bra or corset. •N ote that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day-to-day clothes. PRESERVE YOUR GOWN The goals of bridal gown preservation is to prevent yellowing, reduce the risk of mold and mildew, prevent oxidation spots, and protect the gown from light and dust elements. Preservation also helps to ensure the dress retains its shape and embellishments remain affixed to it. If your dress was exposed to anything out of the ordinary, disclose the details and have it cleaned to ensure your dress remains in the best possible condition. Once cleaned, most gowns will be stored in an archival quality acid-free box that resists water and mildew. With preservation your dress will be an heirloom that gets passed on. You have found “the dress,” so stop looking, and do not second-guess yourself. Have faith in your decision, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having accomplished one of your most special decisions.
ALTERATIONS The bridal salon will take your exact measurements before ordering your dress. Order your gown in the size you are on the day you place the order—not the size you hope to be. It is much easier to make the dress smaller than bigger. To achieve a perfect fit, your dress will likely need minor alterations in the bust, waist, and hips, and is best done by a professional seamstress. Be sure you understand the special order policy of the bridal salon. In most cases, when you order your wedding dress, it is a final sale.

FOR GROOMS A groom’s options of attire may be more limited than those of his lovely bride’s, but whatever the degree of formality or style of the wedding, these few key points will help when ordering formalwear. FOUR BASIC STYLE CATEGORIES Formalwear can be separated into four styles: very formal, formal, semiformal, and informal. The time of your ceremony will strongly influence the level of formality, in turn influencing the attire. Other considerations such as color and theme will also play a part in the selection. GIVE YOURSELF THREE MONTHS Formalwear should be reserved or purchased at least three months in advance and all
measurements taken at least three weeks prior to the wedding to allow plenty of time for alterations. If your groomsmen live in different parts of the country, have them measured by a local tailor and forwarded to your store. Rented formal wear usually includes a jacket, vest, shirt, neckwear, cufflinks, pants and shoes. Nine months before the wedding Ask your guys! Pick your best man, other groomsmen, and ushers. Make a list of all your guys that will need outfits for the big day, include relatives who need a tuxedo. Try on tuxes and suits. Let your guys know when and where they need to go to get fitted. GROOMS DINNER After your ceremony rehearsal, which is typically held the night before your wedding day, everyone gathers for a celebratory dinner. Traditionally, the groom’s family hosts this dinner. Optionally, both families may choose to do the honor together, or you and your fiancé may decide to host. The event can be as casual or as fancy as you would like it to be. At the very least, guests attending the rehearsal dinner should include parents and siblings, wedding-party members and their spouses or significant others, the parents of any child attendants, and the officiant and his/her spouse. If any out-of town guests are invited to the wedding, they may also be
invited to the rehearsal dinner, especially if they already arrived in town for the wedding. It’s best to book the venue as far in advance as possible. If you plan to have a slide show as entertainment, verify if you are able to use their audiovisual equipment or if you will need to rent it. Give the venue the final guest count approximately 72 hours in advance. BACHELOR(ETTE) PARTY With the planning done, it’s time to unwind and celebrate with your friends with a bachelor(ette) party. From site to centerpieces, plan a wedding reception to remember with inspiration, organization, vision and imagination.
Creative planning, an organized agenda, and the teamwork of bride, groom, and several key vendors bring to life the most magnificent receptions. Set the stage for a successful celebration with a well thought-out “plan-of-action.� Planning experts suggest a bride and groom put the wedding day in perspective by drafting a planof-action that includes: potential ceremony and reception sites, date and time options, estimated number of guests, style, theme and budget. As your vision and expectations develop, continue to perfect your plan-of-action. Selecting a wedding venue should be the first task you take action on. Select locations are often booked one to two years out, and prime dates (Saturdays, afternoons and evenings, May through October) go quickly. Knowing this, once you find your dream site, book it immediately. THE GUEST LIST The greatest factor to effect your budget will be the number of guests invited, and all should fit comfortably within the venue space. Choose locations that tell your love story. If you meet in college, check for use of the facilities. Proposed on the beach; speak with state park representatives to book the site. By selecting a venue within your theme, you create a truly personalized celebration. CONDUCT A PHONE INTERVIEW There are a few initial criteria you can confirm over the phone before doing a site visit. Call to ask these basic questions: Is your preferred date available? Where do their prices per person start? Can they accommodate your guest list? If they fit these initial criteria, make an appointment to tour the reception site. INSPECT THE SITE PERSONALLY It may be love at first sight, but looks are not everything. Meet the staff you will be working with for your wedding and spend ample time touring the entire facility to

THE COST When discussing costs, especially regarding food and beverage, make sure you get the price inclusive of tax and gratuity. Rates vary significantly depending on the type of venue, the number of guests and the time of year. All details of your reception should be written in a contract signed by you and the venue representative. Most sites require a deposit, and will need the balance paid at least one week in advance. Map it Out to identify where each component of the reception will take place and make a diagram of the room. THE RECEPTION FLOW A common mistake couples make is failing to orchestrate their reception. Timing of the key moments of your reception should be communicated to all your vendors and guests. The critical factor is to keep the event “flowing” and your guests comfortable and happy. After the ceremony your photographer will finish taking photographs, and you will take a limo ride. During this time, serve your guests appetizers and drinks, and have your DJ or musicians play soft background music as everyone waits for your arrival. The Master of Ceremonies (MC) announces that dinner will be served soon and asks your guests to be seated. The MC (usually your DJ) introduces the bridal party as they enter the room. Be sure to plan the path between the banquet tables, so you can easily get to your table. The bride’s father makes a short speech, welcomes everyone and thanks everyone for coming. The officiate blesses the meal and the food service begins. Each table, in turn, will move through the buffet line, or will be served by wait staff. Having
chat topics placed at each table is a good way to get your guests to mingle, socialize, and chat while they wait to be served. The best man presents a toast to the newly married couple. Additional speeches and stories can be told during and after dinner. At the planned time, the MC will announce the cake cutting. You and your groom complete the ceremonial cutting of the cake, and the MC will announce the couple’s first dance. The couple’s first dance may be followed by several additional special dances, and then the floor is opened for everyone to dance. The final reception event is the bouquet toss by the bride and garter throw by the groom. Remarks by the bride and groom. Though not necessary some brides and grooms like to take time to thank their parents, guests, and anyone who helped make the day possible. Congratulations! Bring in photos of the styles you like to help communicate your ideas. Not that you want an exact replica, but you may love one for the shape of the bouquet, another for the type of flowers or the elements used, and yet another one for the color scheme that was used. Flowers are seasonal, so keep in mind what you want may not necessarily be available or cost effective. Lastly, it’s a good idea to note any flower allergies that you or your groom might have and share them with the floral designer to avoid any untimely sneezes.
DESCRIPTIVE WORDS Along with the photos, decide a few descriptive words to help express the style you have in mind. Try to use meaningful words like formal, vintage, country, rustic, casual, fun, glitz and glam, etc., while avoiding basic words like elegant or simple, unless that is really what you mean. Your photographer cannot be in more than one place at a time; on a wedding day they get pulled in many different directions. To cover all the angles consider the package that includes a second photographer. At every stage of the day, it’s wonderful to have two different perspectives of everything that happens. While one is photographing the bride throwing her bouquet, the second shooter can focus on all the ladies diving for it. Who wouldn’t want both of those photos? While one is taking family photos, the other can go photograph the details and your guests at the reception. An extra photographer provides backup to capture all of the moments constantly happening at weddings—the family members who haven’t seen each other in years sharing a laugh, little kids being little kids, hugs, smiles, and tears. They happen all night long, and they can’t all be caught on film, but with two photographers around, the odds are pretty good that the big ones won’t be missed. BECOMING A MRS
such as your birth certificate, your social security card or last year’s W-2 form. You will also need two documents to prove your local, residential address. To update the name on your Social Security card you will find the application available at the Social Security Administration’s website, or at the local office. You will keep your same number— only your name will get updated. Your bank accounts, bills, and insurance should happen easier. Contact each to inform them of your name and address change. Some will just require a phone call, while others may ask for documents. If you are going on a honeymoon right after your wedding you should not change your name before leaving. Your new name has to match all travel documents, most importantly, your passport—processing name changes on passports generally takes anywhere from four to six weeks.
Changing your name is one of the first things you will have to do after your wedding. No matter if you take your husband’s last name or choose to hyphenate your name, you will have to inform the government and companies with which you do business of your legal name change. Before you begin the process, you will need a notarized copy of the marriage license. Call the clerk’s office where the license was filed for details on how to get a copy. Keep in mind there will be a fee. When you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to change your driver’s license, bring the notarized copy of your marriage license, an identity document,

When you book your photographer, schedule an engagement session to spend some additional time getting to know him or her. You may consider skipping this step, or think that just having a friend take your engagement pictures is good enough, but you will be thankful for what you gain by using your day-of photographer. The engagement session gives you and your fiancé a chance to get to know your photographer and how he or she interacts with you before the wedding day. You will be more comfortable the day of the wedding knowing that all of your personalities blend. Having pictures taken can be uncomfortable for a lot of people; engagement sessions can ease any tension and anxiety. Your photographer will get to know the two of you; will find out if your eyes blink a lot; if you need help in some posed shots (what do I do with my hands? should I look at you? look away?); discover

the angles that look best for your facial expressions. This session will save time when creating a “timeless portraiture” on your wedding day. The session offers added time with your photographer and a unique opportunity to peek into the window of your personalities. Have a session that highlights your favorite thing to do together. Be creative, go do something you love, and bring your photographer along with you. Couples have included horseback riding, hiking, or a hole of golf in their session to show who they are together.
TIPS FOR A GREAT SESSION Share your ideas. Talk to your photographer about locations you would like to go to, and your ideas. Maybe you would love to have more candid pictures taken in a coffee shop. The better you communicate about what you are looking for in your pictures, the more likely you’ll get it. Look Amazing. Bring several outfits to choose the clothes that go best with each background. It is important for your clothes to complement and look good next to each other, but try to avoid looking like twins. Solids are great and look good next to almost any backdrop.
Have Fun. Your engagement session should be stress-free and relaxed. It is an experience to enjoy together. Bring Props. Bringing your own fun props will give you something to do, and make your photos unique to you as a couple. When choosing your props think of your style, the location of your shoot, your clothing changes, and your wedding theme. You will want everything to flow nicely. TIP: Use your photos for engagement announcements, wedding invitations, or to decorate the guest book and reception tables.

Videography is an art that uses professional grade cameras, software, computers, and sound equipment to capture your event and puts it on DVD so your story can be retold for years to come. A video will capture every important moment that photographs can often miss. Still photography can’t always capture the fluid movement of the bride making her way down the aisle or the trembling of the groom’s hands as he sees her for the first time, the way her parent’s hug her before she steps up to the alter, the emotion he shows as he sings to his bride, the funny way she spills her sand over the edge of the vase. Videographers are professional storytellers, so you will want to make sure that they will capture every part of your story that you want to be told. You and your fiancé might want to consider having your videographer create a short clip of how you met and fell in love to show at your rehearsal dinner and reception. You will need to create a script or interview questions for your videographer to ask you as they film your clip. You will need to practice being interviewed and what you want to say, so that you are comfortable in front of the camera. Having a video at your event is a fun way for members of your new family and friends to get to know you as a couple, if they haven’t had the chance yet.

You will want to include the cost in your budget, so start researching and checking the local options early. Book your transportation six months in advance—especially if you are getting married during prom season or on a very popular wedding day. A RIDE FOR EVERYONE You are responsible for providing transportation for your wedding party and both sets of parents the day of the wedding. Typically, the best man is in charge of getting

Find out how many people will fit in each vehicle as it gets awkward and uncomfortable when fourteen people squeeze into a vehicle meant for ten! THE CONTRACT Get a written contract outlining all of the specifics, including the specific vehicles for each purpose, and all financial information including rates, deposits, gratuities, taxes, and any other fees. TIP: If your ceremony and reception site are close to each other, you might want to stay simple with your choice, since you won’t be in it for long. However, if you want to be chauffeured around for a while, check out an option with all the bells and whistles.

Do you want a caterer separate from your venue? Sit-down service or buffet? Will appetizers be served during cocktail hour? Will there be alcohol? Full bar or limited to beer, champagne and wine?
