hopping for the right ensemble for your wedding day is exciting, and maybe even overwhelming at times. But with the right direction, you will find the perfect wedding gown with ease and confidence. Whatever your style, there is something out there waiting for you.
WHEN TO START. Begin the search for your gown, accessories, and jewelry up to nine months before the wedding day to give ample time to avoid rush-order fees. Some dress designers require six months to produce a gown; others may be more or less, so be sure to ask. Order early to allow sufficient time for your gown to be ordered, received, altered, and steamed. FIRST THINGS FIRST. What style of dress have you always dreamt of going down the aisle in? If you do not have a certain look in mind, flip through these magazine pages, and mark the gowns you like. Noting the details and comparing those you like will give you an idea of what you want before you head to the salon. WHERE TO GO. If you love a particular designer, find the local bridal 8 Southern Minnesota Bride
salon that carries that designer and start trying styles on. Be sure to phone ahead, as some bridal salons require appointments, and those that do not will be able to recommend a time to visit when you will receive one-onone attention. These local professionals know their inventory and are there to personally assist you in this important dress purchase. Utilize their expertise to ensure selection of a style that is right for you. WHAT TO LOOK FOR. The details of your ceremony—time of year, level of formality, location, theme, and so on, will help guide you in choosing a gown for your ceremony. out of place at a small wedding with fifty guests in a park. Each possible scenario calls for a different style of gown, so be sure to share this information with the salesperson. They can then guide you toward styles that will best complement the formality of your affair. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Become familiar with the terms for specialty fabrics and gown shapes to make it easier to communicate what you want. Knowing your budget and having style details that are essential to you (i.e. an A-line style with a sweetheart neckline, or you want your arms covered) gives you a starting point, and will put you in control of the maze of dresses. WHO TO BRING. For this once-ina-lifetime purchase, invite only one or two close friends or family members. A crowd can make it difficult to listen to your own instincts about what makes
you feel fabulous. Be sure the people who accompany you are not only supportive, but also objective. The professionals at the bridal salons will ask to assist you in the dressing room. After all, you will have help getting into your dress on your wedding day. WHAT TO BRING. Wear a strapless bra for trying on strapless, halter, or spaghetti strapped dresses. Wear comfortable clothing and slip-on shoes. You will be standing on a platform, so you won’t need your actual shoes until the fitting appointment. Wear little to no makeup to see how colors complement your true skin tone, as well as to avoid staining the fabric. Preserve Your Gown
T
he wedding is over and you do not want to simply hang your beautiful gown in the corner of your closet and not think about it again. Even in a seemingly safe storage area, the elements will begin working at discoloring and even decomposing the fabric, particularly if kept in a plastic bag. A properly cleaned and stored dress can last for many years. After the wedding, many bridal gowns are put into a plastic garment bag with good intentions of cleaning and preserving it soon. Keeping your gown in a plastic bag exposes it to the most harmful environment possible—plastic fumes. Most plastic gives off chemical fumes that cause the yellowing of bridal gowns
over time. Also, your dress may look clean, but it is the invisible stains such as white wine, clear soda, perspiration, hairspray, perfume, frosting, etc., that must be removed permanently so they do not oxidize with time, turn brown, and become more difficult to remove later. Wanting to keep your dress in good condition for many years to come involves hiring a professional to clean and preserve it. The goal of bridal gown preservation is to prevent yellowing, reduce the risk of mold and mildew, prevent oxidation spots, and protect the gown from light and dust elements. If you know of anything that got on your dress, be sure to let the professional know what, and where the stains are. Preserving

Advise the professional of the details of the wedding itself. Was the wedding outdoors and are there dirt and grass stains on the hem? Was the gown worn at the beach and in the ocean? Certain elements can cause a reaction with the dry cleaning solvent. If your dress was exposed to anything out of the ordinary, be sure to disclose the details. Be sure to view the gown together and point out the stains to the cleaning professional. Once cleaned, your dress can be stored or displayed. Most gowns will be stored in an archival quality acid-free box that resists water and mildew. It will be much easier to book your other wedding services after you have a wedding date selected and booked with the site you have chosen. Consider the following items as you prepare: YOUR DATE. Together with your fiancé come up with some possible wedding dates. Consider your own schedules, as well as the schedules of important people, without whom your wedding could simply just not take place. Contact these special guests soon after your engagement, tell them your preferred dates, and identify dates that work for them. Now you have a few potential dates to begin your quest. Obtain a Minnesota Marriage Licence
Y
ou must obtain a license from any Minnesota county Recorder’s office. The marriage does not need to take place in the county where the license is obtained, but must take place within the state. State law requires both applicants to appear in person when applying. Call or see county website for details if either bride or groom cannot apply in person. WAITING PERIOD AND USE. State law requires a five-day waiting period and the issuance of the license. After the waiting period, your license may be picked up or it can be mailed to you. It is then valid to use for six months. FEES. The current fee is $115. The fee for parties who complete at least 12 hours of premarital education is $40. See the county’s website or visit a local office for requirement detail. No refunds are given. MINIMUM AGE FOR MARRIAGE. Must be 18. Be prepared to present proper identification and proof of age with a driver’s license, passport, or a certified copy of birth certificate. PREVIOUS MARRIAGES. Information regarding the termination of the most recent marriage is required (date, court, place) or the date and place of death of the former spouse. WHAT TO DO WITH THE LICENSE. The person who solemnizes your marriage has it signed by the couple and two witnesses and, within five days, files it with the proper government agency for validation. That agency will, in turn, record the certificate in the county marriage records and send a certified copy of the certificate to you. Venues banquet tables, so that you can easily get to your table. All members of your wedding party will sit at the head table, with the exception of the children. Most head tables consist of long rectangular tables where the wedding party sits, facing all of the guest tables. An alternative to this is the “Sweetheart” table, a small, round table for only the bride and groom. This table allows the couple a bit of privacy for their first meal, and makes it easier for guests to visit the couple without the barrier of the large table. It also allows wedding party members to join their spouses, who may otherwise be at a table with a group of strangers. Each table, in turn, moves through the buffet line, or is served by wait staff.
Once everyone is served, the best man presents a toast to the couple, which may be followed by additional toasts. After dinner, take time to walk around the reception room to visit each table. Greet each of your guests and thank them for coming. At the planned time, the emcee announces the cake cutting. You and your groom complete the ceremonial cutting of the cake, and the emcee will announce the couple’s first dance. This dance may be followed by several additional special dances, and then the floor is opened for everyone to dance. The final reception event is the bouquet toss, and garter throw. Everyone can then dance and celebrate the night away. Congratulations! You have just thrown the biggest, and best party of your life. o

Making Arrangements For Traveling Guests

ou want to make sure that your out-of-town guests feel welcomed, and know that you are thankful that they came. Use these ideas for a few ways to show them how thankful you are that they came to help you celebrate. Make arrangements before sending out your invitations with a couple of hotels where your guests can choose to stay. There is no need for you to pay for the rooms, however, most hotels will work with you on a better rate if you are blocking a group of rooms. You should have options to accommodate different budgets. It is a nice touch to have a welcome bag waiting for your guests when they arrive in their hotel rooms to thank them for coming. Items to include in the bag are locally made items, necessity items, snacks, drinks, and fancy bath items, just to name a few ideas. Remember that people look forward to weddings as a time to reconnect with family and friends that they haven’t seen for awhile. Consider planning at least one event outside of the wedding where everyone can get together and visit.
Don’t try to make it a major event—just something simple and relaxed. While it is not necessarily expected, it is a nice gesture to invite guest who have made the journey to your wedding to the rehearsal dinner. For the day of your wedding, have someone local whom guests can contact, should questions or needs arise. Put this person’s contact information into the welcome bags and on agendas for your weekend. This should be someone outside of your wedding party or immediate family to avoid time spent on your day having to give directions. Perhaps a friend would be willing to play host/hostess for the weekend, or if you have a wedding planner, this would fall under their duties. If it is a friend you should include them in your “thank you” gift giving. Providing for your guests needs will ensure they feel comfortable as you dive into your weekend festivities. Rehearsal 101
he objective of a rehearsal is to get those involved in the ceremony familiar with the overall details and procedures, and have each individual learn any special roles assigned to them. Now is the time to identify and work out any kinks in the process of the ceremony plan. Work with your coordinator to create an approximate wedding day timeline for each major element of the ceremony. Distribute a copy to everyone for use at the rehearsal and wedding day so they will know how the day will flow. Your professional coordinator should be present the night of the rehearsal, or assign someone to be in charge to direct the rehearsal, and keep it running smoothly. Identify any special details, such as where the candles will be placed, who will straighten your train after the lighting, etc. Identify any special announcements the minister is to make, for example, to inform your guests to proceed to the reception site and enjoy refreshments while the wedding party photographs are taken. Do a practice run of your entrance with the proper music, so everyone knows his or her cue. If the songs are
unfamiliar, and the musician is unavailable, it would be a good idea to bring an Ipod to play the songs. Assemble the wedding party in proper position at the altar, do a practice run of all elements of the ceremony, and walk through your exit to decide how far down the aisle each couple walks before the next couple leaves the altar. At a minimum, your entire wedding party, the officiant, the parents, and particularly, any children involved in the ceremony, should be at the rehearsal. If children do not practice their role at the rehearsal, the odds are slim they will muster the courage at the actual wedding. Those doing special readings or songs during the ceremony should also be present to practice.
Groom’s DINNER After your ceremony rehearsal, everyone gathers for a celebratory dinner. Traditionally, the groom’s family hosts this dinner. Both sets of parents may choose to do the honor together, or you and your fiancé may decide to host. The event can be as casual or as fancy as you would like it to be. Catering FLAVOR. As the bride and groom what are your favorite foods? Do you have a flavor-filled complicated food dish in mind? While most caterers can offer a variety of cuisine, there are those caterers that specialize in barbeque, ethnic cuisine, or vegetarian menus. TIME OF DAY. What time of day will your meal be served? If earlier in the day, a lighter meal is adequate, while a full meal is more common later in the day. Use time to narrow down your choice. EXTRAS. Are you concerned with a beautiful banquet table presentation? Do you want elaborately-draped serving tables, and stunning ice sculptures? As you can imagine, increasing the food quality and complexity, and the decorating and presentation of the food, the labor hours involved will result in a higher per person cost for your reception. If your budget is limited, take some time to determine your particular priorities, and spend the bulk of your catering dollars in that area. GUEST REQUESTS. The caterer can help you plan for the variations in your guest list, like guests with large appetites or even the smaller appetites of the children, and will help you determine the correct amount of food to order to ensure that you don’t run out. Better to have some left over than to leave some guests with an empty plate.

Discuss any special needs you and your guests may have (e.g. vegetarian, sugarfree menu items, food allergies), and the costs associated with these. To avoid disappointment on the wedding day, make sure you test the meal you decide upon before confirming it. INTERVIEW. Start the interview process and book your caterer early in your planning process. Ask event professionals to refer a caterer who has experience with the quality, style, and organization that you are looking for. Credentials count! Are they licensed and insured? How long have they been in business? Complete a contract with the caterer you choose that includes, a listing of the foods selected, services to be provided, and the cost. Know the number of servers included, the number of hours service will be provided, and arrival and departure times. Most caterers will require a final count at least two weeks in advance. Find out about all deadlines and due dates. Regardless of the serving style and food that you choose, a festive event is the goal of every couple. ome reception venues require clients to bring in their caterer of choice. If you need to plan and provide the food service there are many talented caterers who are highly qualified to meet your every catering need. Use this set of questions to guide you when selecting a caterer: • What style of food or special menu items are your specialties? Can we see pictures of previous events along with references? • Can we include a sentimental family recipe in the menu? • Given the style, time, and date of my wedding, what menu items do you suggest? Will there be a tasting of the menu we choose? • What is your cost-per-person of a buffet compared to a sit-down dinner? • How much per person should I serve? • Do you offer a children’s menu? Do you offer vegetarian or vegan options? • Have you worked at my reception site before? • What service costs are included and what costs are additional? Are setup and cleanup included and how much time is needed for setup and cleanup? • Do you provide the wait staff? What will they wear? How much is overtime if the reception runs long? How are gratuities figured?
• Do you provide or rent linens, dinnerware, tables, chairs, and serving pieces? If so, what color and style of linens, glasses, plates, and accessories are available? • Can you provide a wedding cake, and possibly a groom’s cake? If we provide them, do you charge a cake cutting and serving fee? • Do you charge for beverage service? • Do you have a liquor license? • If we want to provide our own wine, champagne, and liquor, do you charge a cork fee? • Will you be personally handling my wedding? If not, who will, and can I meet them? • Are you state licensed? (they have met health department standards) • Do you have liability insurance? • Can we see a copy of your standard contract? What deposit do you require to hold the date? When is the balance due? What is your cancellation policy? o

tion, so you will want to provide your guests with a full view of the cake and the cutting by displaying your cake in a prominent, well-decorated location at your reception. FLAVOR. Traditionally, wedding cakes have been white or chocolate with buttercream frosting. Not necessarily so anymore. This gives you so much room to be creative with flavors and accommodating of others’ tastes. Take into consideration your groom’s favorite, your own favorite, and any family members who may have a particular liking for a unique flavor. Your choices are limitless and should be something that you have educated yourself on before you arrive at the bakery. FROSTING. Just as there are many different cake flavors, there are also many different frostings to choose from. Choices include butter cream, almond, white chocolate, dark chocolate, and cream cheese; just to name a few. Another increasingly popular choice is fondant, as it is moldable

and shapeable. A seasoned baker can make many different types of flowers, polka dots, ribbon, etc., out of their fondant. Fondant holds up better in higher temperatures, while butter cream frosting tends to melt. This may be something you will want to consider as you are making your selections. UNIQUE DESIGNS. Your cake can be traditional, or as unique as you would like it to be. Go into your meeting with ideas and pictures to help you communicate with your designer. Have a swatch of your colors to give your baker, if you are using them on the cake. Discuss other options, such as flowers and ribbon. Continue personalizing this day as you head into the dessert portion of your reception. Cupcake towers are a great way to serve an individual dessert to your guests. On the other hand, many couples are mixing it up, and offering a dessert bar stocked with family favorites, cookies, pies or chocolate fountains. TOP IT OFF. Today’s cake toppers have personality and style that mimic the bride and groom. Consider having a custom topper created to reflect the two of you. Incorporate your hobbies, interests, and personalities into the design idea. After the wedding, you will have a great keepsake (and conversation piece) for your home.
GROOM’S CAKE. If theme is an important aspect of your wedding, ask your baker to incorporate some of those elements into the groom’s cake design. Cowboy or sports themes, bright colors, even custom artwork are all possibilities. DETAILS. Aside from design and flavor, the baker will need to know how many guests will be served. Be sure to ask about cake sizes, delivery charges, deposits, and payment schedules during your meeting. You might also discuss ways to economize, such as false layers on your “fancy” cake, and ordering sheet cakes to serve your guests. This gives you even more room to order different flavors and choices, allowing your guests to choose their flavor. Use your imagination as you design your cake. TIER. This term refers to each layer, or level of a wedding cake. ROUND. This is the most traditional of shapes for a wedding cake and is cylindrical. SQUARE. If you are going for a more modern and sleek look you could try setting square tiers at different angles. HEXAGON. For a trendy and more “hip” appearance give this six-sided tier cake a try. The finished look is so eye-catching, you will not need a lot of extra detail. SCALLOPED. This shape is soft and casual, with flower-petal shaped edges. TOPSY-TURVY. Going for a more whimsical look? Then this topsy-turvy, helter-skelter cake is for you. With different shapes and angles for each tier of the cake it has a more dramatic appearance. MOLDED. This cake is more typical of the groom’s cake, and is made to represent the hobby or interest of the groom. Try a sports theme, motorcycle or a movie character. o

Klea Swenson & Matt Rettmann Got married on June 16, 2012 in Mankato

verybody knows everybody at Bethany Lutheran College, except Klea and Matt didn’t. Not until this attractive guy approached to talk to one of her friends, and in passing, he said, “hey Klea.” He knew her name and she wanted to know more about him. So she went to where the information is—Facebook, and to her surprise they were already friends! Klea teases Matt that he added her because he thought she was a cute incoming freshman. To this day, how they became Facebook friends remains a mystery. They both wonder how it is they didn’t meet sooner—their parents’ homes are literally ten minutes apart! A vacation in Cancun brought them beachfront, and the first thing Klea said was, “sometime this week we should take a walk on the beach!” On the last possible night they took that walk. After watching Klea write in the sand, Matt wanted his turn, and asked her not to look. He wrote his question, and in the same moment she turned back to look, a huge wave came in and washed it away! Not knowing how hard he had tried all week to get to this moment, Klea told him it wasn’t a big deal and to just rewrite it! As these words came out of her mouth she turned away, and then began to realize what might be happening. She turned around to see Matt down on one knee with “Will you marry me?” written in the sand, and of course she said yes! o 56 Southern Minnesota Bride

THE MOST MEMORABLE. Klea remembers waiting in anticipation for the chapel doors to open and to begin walking down the aisle with her dad. As well, it was an indescribable moment when their pastor announced them as husband and wife. THE MOST FUN. The girls choreographed a surprise dance to Crazy by Britney Spears for the reception. They didn’t think the guys knew anything about their dance until they came back dancing to Bringing Sexy Back by Justin Timberlake. The crowd’s reaction was priceless! n selecting the flowers that will add to the ambience and romance of your wedding, you will want to consider blooms that best express your personality, complement your wedding gown, and tie-in with the general look and theme you have selected for the day. GO PREPARED. Bring color and fabric swatches of your wedding apparel, both yours and the bridesmaids’ dresses, to show the florist. Bring photos that show arrangements using your favorite flowers. In choosing the right color combination, consider your own personal taste, but also the season, the time of day of the ceremony, and the atmosphere of your ceremony location. With this information, your florist will be able to suggest floral combinations and artistic treatments to create a beautiful bouquet and other arrangements. Be sure to note any flower allergies that you or your groom might have. CONSIDER COST. Flowers and greenery in season are more abundant and generally less expensive. Remember to ask if the flowers you select will hold their shape throughout the day, as temperature will be a factor in how well the blooms hold their shape. APPOINTMENT. His or her artistry, knowledge of wedding procedures, and ability to listen to your needs will ensure that you will get a good value for your money, and have the perfect floral bouquets and accents for your wedding day. omplement your attire, personality, and proportions, while remaining in the theme of the day when selecting your bridal bouquet. Here are some basic considerations to factor in before making your final choice: COLOR. All-white bouquets are the most traditional choice for brides. The use of color in your bouquet is a beautiful way to express your personality. Consider using accent flowers in the hue of your bridesmaids’ dresses, or in your wedding colors. BODY TYPE. In general, a petite bride should pass on the grandiose and opt for a smaller bouquet so she is not lost behind a sea of flowers. A voluptuous or taller bride should select a bigger style of bouquet, because a small
nosegay might seem out of proportion. And the average size bride should select a medium-sized bouquet that presents a nice proportion when held in front of her body. GOWN. Consider the scale of your gown also. A common rule is, the bigger the gown, the bigger the bouquet. A simple sheath gown wouldn’t be able to hold its own against an overflowing cascade bouquet, however, a ball gown would. You will also want to consider any embellishment and not obscure the beautiful beading or lace with a large bouquet. When you meet with your floral designer, show them a photo of your dress, and they will be able to offer suggestions for the style and shape of bouquet that’s right for you. o

Bride’s Guide: Bouquet Terms CASCADE. Like a waterfall, flows downward, often with larger flowers at the top, using smaller blooms as it begins to taper down and lands gracefully over the bride’s hands. HAND-TIED. A selection of flowers that are wired or loosely gathered together and tied with a satin ribbon or a combination of ribbon and lace. This has more of a natural, garden look. NOSEGAY. Consists of a densely packed mound of flowers and greenery tied together with a wire, ribbon, or other item. POSY. A smaller version of the nosegay, perfect for bridesmaids, and also a great alternative to the mother’s corsage.
PAGEANT. Long-stemmed flowers cradled in the bride’s arm that flow naturally from the elbow, while the rest should be comfortably resting on her hand. ROUND. The classic round bouquet, usually compiled of large flowers that are loosely arranged. This shape and style is less conspicuous than a cascade bouquet, yet bolder than a simple nosegay. POMANDER. A small, compact bloom-covered ball that is usually four to six inches in diameter and suspended from a ribbon worn around the wrist. TOSS BOUQUET. Solely made for the bouquet toss. ong after your wedding day is over, your photographs will provide lasting memories. With that in mind, you not only need to find a photographer that you feel comfortable with, but you also need to do some homework, to know what options are available, and what shots should not be missed. MEMORIES ARE FOREVER. Photographs are one of the few things that last forever from your wedding day. Do not gamble on it, hire a professional. Capturing your memories is in their hands. Just as you have invested time in choosing the person you are marrying, invest time in choosing a talented photographer who is a good match for you. Do not let price be your sole factor in hiring the photographer, quality pictures will be treasured forever. COMMUNICATE. Open and clear communication is essential to getting the great wedding photos you expect. Share your expectations, and never assume that your photographer knows what you want. Vague terms, like “modern,” “colorful,” “close-up,”

and “artistic” can mean two very different things to a bride and her photographer. The only way to be sure everyone is on the same page is to go through sample shots together, identify ones you like, and explain why you chose those particular images. SCHEDULED SHOTS. Having a wedding day schedule ensures you will have plenty of time to get all of the photographs taken. Your photographer can help you establish a schedule, taking into account your photography goals, as well as your desire to have fun. Instead of having the wedding party and family members milling around for several hours, give them the schedule showing when they need to be there. Remember to schedule alone time to reflect on the commitment you just made to each other. Once the wedding gets started there is no stopping and going back. Most photographers agree, if the shot is not scheduled, it may not happen. You can not go back to get the photographs you miss and wished you had, so confidence in, and communication with your photographer is key.

You may consider opting out of this step, or think that just having a friend take your engagement pictures is good enough, but you will be thankful for what you gain by using your day-of photographer. The engagement session gives you and your fiancé a chance to get to know your photographer, and how he or she works, and interacts with you before the wedding day. hanging your name is one of the first things you will have to do after your wedding. Whether you take your husband’s last name, or choose to hyphenate your name, you will have to inform the government, and companies you do business with, of your legal name change. Get an original or notarized copy of the marriage license. Call the clerk’s office where the license was filed for details on how the get a copy. There will be a fee. When you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to change your driver’s license, bring a notarized copy of your marriage license, an identity document, such as a birth certificate, your social security card, W-2 form, and two documents to prove your residential address.

To update your Social Security card you will find the application available at the Social Security Administration’s website, or at the local office. You will keep your same number—just your name will get updated. Your bank accounts, bills, and insurance should happen easier. Contact each to inform them of your name and address change. Some will just require a phone call, while others may ask for documents. If you are going on a honeymoon right after your wedding you should not change your name before leaving. Your new name has to match all travel documents, most importantly, your passport—processing name changes on passports generally takes anywhere from four to six weeks. o

ransportation on a wedding day used to be fairly basic. However, these days couples are making arrangements for more of their guests, and have more options available to them. To help you make decisions, take these ideas into consideration when booking your transportation: CONSIDERING ALL. You are responsible for providing transportation for your wedding party and both sets of parents the day of the wedding. Typically, the best man is in charge of getting the groom and the other groomsmen to the ceremony site on time. After the ceremony the groom then joins the bride on the way to the reception. If you choose to ride alone as a couple you will need to arrange a second option for the wedding party. SELECTION. Different varieties of limousines, vans, trolleys, and even horse-drawn carriages are available. You will want to include the cost in your budget, so start researching and checking the local options early. Book your transportation six months in advance—especially if you are getting

married during prom season or on a very popular wedding day. ASK QUESTIONS. Talk to several rental companies. Do not just book a vehicle or carriage over the phone— see it first. Make sure it has air conditioning. Find out how many people fit in each vehicle as it gets awkward and uncomfortable when fourteen people squeeze into a vehicle meant for ten! TIME TO RIDE. If your ceremony and reception site are close to each other, you might want to stay simple with your choice, since you won’t be in it for long. However, if you want to be chauffeured around for an extended time, check out an option with all the bells and whistles, go ahead and splurge! SAFE AND ON TIME. If you plan an international trip it will take time to get your passports, and medical clearances. If there is a currency difference it may be more beneficial to do an exchange before you leave the country. Begin early to avoid the stress of waiting for your credentials to arrive. Major credit cards and travelers checks offer fraud protection, carry these not cash. Be sure to have your travel agent’s
contact information with you for help if needed. Check into traveler’s insurance for a policy that offers protection in the event of a natural disaster or illness. Probably the most useful approach for a bride and groom and their families to take when making wedding plans is to be communicative, realistic, and courteous.
