You’re engaged—now what? Use Southern Minnesota Bride to plan your wedding—of course! Organizing the details of a wedding can be quite a task, and even overwhelming at times with all of the numerous arrangements that need to be made. You will not want to forget even the smallest of details, so use Southern Minnesota Bride to keep yourself organized while you plan your wedding. Southern Minnesota Bride is a wedding planning magazine that is filled with beautiful venue options, talented photographers, and many other wedding professionals who are ready to assist you with your wedding plans. The images used throughout the magazine are all of real brides, from real Southern Minnesota weddings, and are a showcase of the creative work of real photographers. The informative articles will help you become knowledgeable about all things wedding. Last, but certainly not least, there are helpful checklists in the back, serving as a reminder of the items needing attention, and a timeline to complete them within. Bring your copy with you wherever you go, and check the tasks off your list as you make plans. Use your copy of the magazine like a wedding textbook—highlight or underline the parts of the articles you want to refer back to, jot down notes in the margins, bend the corner of the page with the photo you like, and mark up the Directory of Services pages as you contact and book these wedding professionals. When your wedding day has come and past, you will have a wonderful keepsake of the planning details of one of the most important days in your life. Congratulations on Your Engagement! Your Wedding Day Ensemble

S

hopping for the right ensemble for your wedding day is exciting, and maybe even overwhelming at times. But with the right direction, you will find the perfect wedding gown with ease and confidence. Whatever your style, there is something out there waiting for you.

WHEN TO START. Begin the search for your gown, accessories, and jewelry up to nine months before the wedding day to give ample time to avoid rush-order fees. Some dress designers require six months to produce a gown; others may be more or less, so be sure to ask. Order early to allow sufficient time for your gown to be ordered, received, altered, and steamed. FIRST THINGS FIRST. What style of dress have you always dreamt of going down the aisle in? If you do not have a certain look in mind, flip through these magazine pages, and mark the gowns you like. Noting the details and comparing those you like will give you an idea of what you want before you head to the salon. WHERE TO GO. If you love a particular designer, find the local bridal 8 Southern Minnesota Bride

salon that carries that designer and start trying styles on. Be sure to phone ahead, as some bridal salons require appointments, and those that do not will be able to recommend a time to visit when you will receive one-onone attention. These local professionals know their inventory and are there to personally assist you in this important dress purchase. Utilize their expertise to ensure selection of a style that is right for you. WHAT TO LOOK FOR. The details of your ceremony—time of year, level of formality, location, theme, and so on, will help guide you in choosing a gown for your ceremony. Select fabrics that are appropriate for the location and weather of your wedding day. For example, an elaborate gown with a long train might seem Announce your engagement at SouthernMNBride.com

out of place at a small wedding with fifty guests in a park. Each possible scenario calls for a different style of gown, so be sure to share this information with the salesperson. They can then guide you toward styles that will best complement the formality of your affair. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Become familiar with the terms for specialty fabrics and gown shapes to make it easier to communicate what you want. Knowing your budget and having style details that are essential to you (i.e. an A-line style with a sweetheart neckline, or you want your arms covered) gives you a starting point, and will put you in control of the maze of dresses. WHO TO BRING. For this once-ina-lifetime purchase, invite only one or two close friends or family members. A crowd can make it difficult to listen to your own instincts about what makes

you feel fabulous. Be sure the people who accompany you are not only supportive, but also objective. The professionals at the bridal salons will ask to assist you in the dressing room. After all, you will have help getting into your dress on your wedding day. WHAT TO BRING. Wear a strapless bra for trying on strapless, halter, or spaghetti strapped dresses. Wear comfortable clothing and slip-on shoes. You will be standing on a platform, so you won’t need your actual shoes until the fitting appointment. Wear little to no makeup to see how colors complement your true skin tone, as well as to avoid staining the fabric. If the dress is not for you, surely it is another bride’s dream dress, so shop freshly bathed, avoid perfume, and do not apply lotions or tanning solutions without appropriate absorption. continued on page 11 u

ORDERING. The bridal salon will take your exact measurements before ordering your dress. Order your gown in the size you are on the day you place the order - not the size you hope to be. It is much easier to make the dress smaller than bigger. To achieve a perfect fit, your dress will likely need minor alterations in the bust, waist, and hips, and is best done by a professional seamstress. Un-

derstand the special order policy of the bridal salon. In most cases, when you order your wedding dress, it is a final sale. You have found “The Dress, so stop looking, and do not second-guess yourself! You have committed to your man, you can commit to a dress! Have faith in your decision, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having accomplished one of your most special decisions. o

Preserve Your Gown

T

he wedding is over and you do not want to simply hang your beautiful gown in the corner of your closet and not think about it again. Even in a seemingly safe storage area, the elements will begin working at discoloring and even decomposing the fabric, particularly if kept in a plastic bag. A properly cleaned and stored dress can last for many years. After the wedding, many bridal gowns are put into a plastic garment bag with good intentions of cleaning and preserving it soon. Keeping your gown in a plastic bag exposes it to the most harmful environment possible—plastic fumes. Most plastic gives off chemical fumes that cause the yellowing of bridal gowns

over time. Also, your dress may look clean, but it is the invisible stains such as white wine, clear soda, perspiration, hairspray, perfume, frosting, etc., that must be removed permanently so they do not oxidize with time, turn brown, and become more difficult to remove later. Wanting to keep your dress in good condition for many years to come involves hiring a professional to clean and preserve it. The goal of bridal gown preservation is to prevent yellowing, reduce the risk of mold and mildew, prevent oxidation spots, and protect the gown from light and dust elements. If you know of anything that got on your dress, be sure to let the professional know what, and where the stains are. Preserving

your wedding gown will clean it to such a degree that even the smallest invisible stain has been totally and permanently removed. Preservation also helps to ensure the dress retains its shape and that embellishments remain affixed to it.

Advise the professional of the details of the wedding itself. Was the wedding outdoors and are there dirt and grass stains on the hem? Was the gown worn at the beach and in the ocean? Certain elements can cause a reaction with the dry cleaning solvent. If your dress was exposed to anything out of the ordinary, be sure to disclose the details. Be sure to view the gown together and point out the stains to the cleaning professional. Once cleaned, your dress can be stored or displayed. Most gowns will be stored in an archival quality acid-free box that resists water and mildew. Have your dress professionally cleaned and preserved as soon after the wedding as possible to ensure your dress remains in the best possible condition. With preservation and care, your dress will be an heirloom that gets worn again some day by someone special. o

any wedding trends come and go, but the tradition of giving and receiving wedding gifts is firmly ingrained in our culture. You can show how much you appreciate those who helped make your day unforgettable by giving them a special gift. Consider personalizing the item with initials, monograms, or even a special message to make it a gift that will surely be cherished. Bridesmaids. Not only do they have to dress up, smile, and look fabulous for your wedding album, your attendants also help you with everything related to your wedding. Show your bridesmaids and groomsmen appreciation for their invaluable help. Consider giving jewelry they can use not only for your wedding day but in the future as well. Pampering at a favorite salon and spa is another great idea. Groomsmen. Consider buying them their shirt, tie or socks to be used

with their tuxedo. Engraved flasks or steins can also be a fun gift. Parents. They worked hard both in raising you and making your day possible; give them something special. Personalized photo albums can be very dear to the heart. Incorporate both childhood and current pictures for a great memory book. Jewelry is always nice for mothers, and a personalized pen or watch is a great idea for fathers. Write a heartfelt thank you letter to both of them. Putting it on paper can mean the world. o

Reception Site Selection

ne of the first decisions to make as you begin planning your wedding is selecting your reception site. It will be much easier to book your other wedding services after you have a wedding date selected and booked with the site you have chosen. Consider the following items as you prepare: YOUR DATE. Together with your fiancé come up with some possible wedding dates. Consider your own schedules, as well as the schedules of important people, without whom your wedding could simply just not take place. Contact these special guests soon after your engagement, tell them your preferred dates, and identify dates that work for them. Now you have a few potential dates to begin your quest. You likely have a single preferred date in mind, but try to stay flexible, since your dream setting may be booked that day. SIZE NEEDS. The number of guests expected to attend will be one of the main factors to consider when narrowing down the options and selecting a site. Do you have 300 people Be inspired at SouthernMNBride.com

to invite or are there 125 on your list? Lower guest counts allow you more options, as sites have a maximum capacity that the facility can handle. Do not fill the site to the maximum allowed, as you want plenty of space for your guests to mingle comfortably. YOUR VISION. Every couple envisions the “ideal” venue in their own way. Factors like wedding style, the over-all budget, the guest count, the season of the year, and if you want an indoor or outdoor wedding, will all have some effect on your decision. Fortunately, with the various venues available, you have several options to choose from to fulfill your vision. The reception typically accounts for the largest expense of your wedding day, so find a location you can visualize as the one that fulfills u Southern Minnesota Bride 21

Venues your dreams. It is what guests talk about the most—the food, the music, the dancing...you get the idea...a memorable reception. FACILITY TYPES. No two venues are exactly alike, each varying in size, formality, and the extent of services they offer. Some wedding reception sites are formal, with ballrooms, while others are on a ranch, at a winery, in a garden, or at an outdoor location with breathtaking views. At some locations, you rent the location, or an empty room, and you completely transform it with tables and decorations. Other facilities provide everything you need, they have the decorating, lighting, and other rental items for you to choose. Most facilities fall somewhere in between.

MEALS. As one of the main parts of a reception, the food and drink to be served need consideration. Ask if the venue has in-house catering service, or if you need to select your own caterer. You will likely have several menu options, and be able to choose food that suits your needs. If possible, request a tastetest of your preferred menu to ensure you like the meal’s quantity, and quality of presentation. PHONE INTERVIEW. Before making an appointment with the venue, request the following information over the phone to confirm your initial criteria: Is your preferred date available? What do their prices per person start at? Can they accommodate your guest list? If they fit these initial criteria, make an appointment to tour the reception site. u

Venues banquet tables, so that you can easily get to your table. All members of your wedding party will sit at the head table, with the exception of the children. Most head tables consist of long rectangular tables where the wedding party sits, facing all of the guest tables. An alternative to this is the “Sweetheart” table, a small, round table for only the bride and groom. This table allows the couple a bit of privacy for their first meal, and makes it easier for guests to visit the couple without the barrier of the large table. It also allows wedding party members to join their spouses, who may otherwise be at a table with a group of strangers. Each table, in turn, moves through the buffet line, or is served by wait staff.

Once everyone is served, the best man presents a toast to the couple, which may be followed by additional toasts. After dinner, take time to walk around the reception room to visit each table. Greet each of your guests and thank them for coming. At the planned time, the emcee announces the cake cutting. You and your groom complete the ceremonial cutting of the cake, and the emcee will announce the couple’s first dance. This dance may be followed by several additional special dances, and then the floor is opened for everyone to dance. The final reception event is the bouquet toss, and garter throw. Everyone can then dance and celebrate the night away. Congratulations! You have just thrown the biggest, and best party of your life. o

Making Arrangements For Traveling Guests

Y

ou want to make sure that your out-of-town guests feel welcomed, and know that you are thankful that they came. Use these ideas for a few ways to show them how thankful you are that they came to help you celebrate. Make arrangements before sending out your invitations with a couple of hotels where your guests can choose to stay. There is no need for you to pay for the rooms, however, most hotels will work with you on a better rate if you are blocking a group of rooms. You should have options to accommodate different budgets. It is a nice touch to have a welcome bag waiting for your guests when they arrive in their hotel rooms to thank them for coming. Items to include in the bag are locally made items, necessity items, snacks, drinks, and fancy bath items, just to name a few ideas. Remember that people look forward to weddings as a time to reconnect with family and friends that they haven’t seen for awhile. Consider planning at least one event outside of the wedding where everyone can get together and visit.

Don’t try to make it a major event—just something simple and relaxed. While it is not necessarily expected, it is a nice gesture to invite guest who have made the journey to your wedding to the rehearsal dinner. For the day of your wedding, have someone local whom guests can contact, should questions or needs arise. Put this person’s contact information into the welcome bags and on agendas for your weekend. This should be someone outside of your wedding party or immediate family to avoid time spent on your day having to give directions. Perhaps a friend would be willing to play host/hostess for the weekend, or if you have a wedding planner, this would fall under their duties. If it is a friend you should include them in your “thank you” gift giving. Providing for your guests needs will ensure they feel comfortable as you dive into your weekend festivities. Hospitality, and generosity towards your wedding guests, will go a long way in ensuring that your wedding is a weekend to remember. o

Bride’s Guide: Venue Details

S

taying organized is key to finding a fabulous reception venue. There are many details to consider when evaluating venues available, so use these questions to prepare yourself before meeting with the venue’s coordinator: • What is the fee for the venue and for each additional hour? • How many hours/days of rental are included? • Do the hours include catering setup, decorating, and DJ set-up time? • Is there a security deposit required? • What is the cancellation policy? • Are there reduced rates for offseason, off-hours or off-days? • Are you able to hold the ceremony at the venue? Is there a fee? • Is the location’s wedding coordinator included in the fee? • Does the facility provide security? • How much for additional staff? • Does the fee include the staff to serve the meal? • Is there a caterer available in-house? • If not, do they require use of a caterer from an approved list? • Can alcohol be served on the property? Who supplies the bar?

• What is the fee for a bartender? • Are there additional charges for set-up and tear-down? • What are the gratuity and sales tax to be added to these fees? • Does the fee include tables, chairs and linens? • Are the dance floor, lighting, and sound included in the fee, or are they available to rent? • Are you responsible for any additional event insurance? • How late can the DJ play music? • Are there enough electrical outlets? • Is there parking available for the guests? • Are there any discounts for hotel rooms for wedding guests? • What are the fees associated with decorating the reception site? Can you decorate the site yourself? • When will the decorating be able to take place?

Use the chart we have included in the Planning Guide to help you compare your options. Objectively review the list of answers received from all of the interviewed locations before making the final decision to reserve a venue. The site should comfortably accommodate your guest list, and fit within the budget. Paying close attention to the fees will ensure that you make an educated decision. o Cossairt Photography

Rehearsal 101

he objective of a rehearsal is to get those involved in the ceremony familiar with the overall details and procedures, and have each individual learn any special roles assigned to them. Now is the time to identify and work out any kinks in the process of the ceremony plan. Work with your coordinator to create an approximate wedding day timeline for each major element of the ceremony. Distribute a copy to everyone for use at the rehearsal and wedding day so they will know how the day will flow. Your professional coordinator should be present the night of the rehearsal, or assign someone to be in charge to direct the rehearsal, and keep it running smoothly. Identify any special details, such as where the candles will be placed, who will straighten your train after the lighting, etc. Identify any special announcements the minister is to make, for example, to inform your guests to proceed to the reception site and enjoy refreshments while the wedding party photographs are taken. Do a practice run of your entrance with the proper music, so everyone knows his or her cue. If the songs are

unfamiliar, and the musician is unavailable, it would be a good idea to bring an Ipod to play the songs. Assemble the wedding party in proper position at the altar, do a practice run of all elements of the ceremony, and walk through your exit to decide how far down the aisle each couple walks before the next couple leaves the altar. At a minimum, your entire wedding party, the officiant, the parents, and particularly, any children involved in the ceremony, should be at the rehearsal. If children do not practice their role at the rehearsal, the odds are slim they will muster the courage at the actual wedding. Those doing special readings or songs during the ceremony should also be present to practice.

Groom’s DINNER After your ceremony rehearsal, everyone gathers for a celebratory dinner. Traditionally, the groom’s family hosts this dinner. Both sets of parents may choose to do the honor together, or you and your fiancé may decide to host. The event can be as casual or as fancy as you would like it to be. Sharing your first meal as husband and wife

electing a caterer to prepare the meal is more than just about flavor. The presentation of the meal, and service to your guests are also important aspects to consider when making catering decisions.

Consider this. Catering a meal requires a considerable amount of time for planning, preparation, serving, and clean up time. Not to mention, the food and rental costs. This is an undertaking that, if you do it yourself, will interfere the most with your family’s participation in the reception. For this reason, you should strongly consider hiring others to take care of the food preparation and service for you. ON-SITE. The venue you have selected will have some impact on the caterer you choose, as some venues require that you use their on-site catering service, or work within their list of preferred vendors. If this is the case, many of your decisions have already been made. You will just select from the options in the price 44 Southern Minnesota Bride

range that works for you. These sites typically include all of the china, flatware, glassware, service, clean up, and gratuity in their catering price range. A professional caterer will provide incomparable food, presentation, and service. Their food services will include preparing the food in their professional kitchens, packaging it for wedding service, transporting it to the site, preparing and decorating the food service table, and staff to attend the food service. Discuss with your caterer if you can rent the required serve ware from them, or if you need to provide your own. PREPARE. Before beginning to identify and interview potential caterers, determine your particular food needs and preferences. Announce your engagement at SouthernMNBride.com

Catering Choose a style. What serving style are you looking for? Some choose a combination of these: Buffet. A buffet usually consists of long tables laden with both hot and cold menu items. Guests make their way down the line with a plate in hand and serve themselves. A benefit to the buffet or food station style of serving food is that it affords the newlyweds more opportunity to mingle and visit with their guests. Plated Service. Plated dinners are served individually to each table by professional wait staff. Many couples mistakenly believe it to be expensive, but depending on what you serve, plated service can be as affordable as a buffet. Plated meals are more controlled from a timing standpoint, and tend to be more formal.

Food Stations. These serveyourself-stations are individual tables scattered around the room. Foods are usually grouped by theme or cuisine, and guests are invited to mingle throughout the room and sample the different dishes. You are able to serve a variety of different foods, and this keeps even the most finicky guest content. Family Style. For a warm, inviting atmosphere, where everyone is treated like family, this style centers around platters heaped with meat, and bowls brimming with side dishes that are passed among those seated at each table, like family. u

Catering FLAVOR. As the bride and groom what are your favorite foods? Do you have a flavor-filled complicated food dish in mind? While most caterers can offer a variety of cuisine, there are those caterers that specialize in barbeque, ethnic cuisine, or vegetarian menus. TIME OF DAY. What time of day will your meal be served? If earlier in the day, a lighter meal is adequate, while a full meal is more common later in the day. Use time to narrow down your choice. EXTRAS. Are you concerned with a beautiful banquet table presentation? Do you want elaborately-draped serving tables, and stunning ice sculptures? As you can imagine, increasing the food quality and complexity, and the decorating and presentation of the food, the labor hours involved will result in a higher per person cost for your reception. If your budget is limited, take some time to determine your particular priorities, and spend the bulk of your catering dollars in that area. GUEST REQUESTS. The caterer can help you plan for the variations in your guest list, like guests with large appetites or even the smaller appetites of the children, and will help you determine the correct amount of food to order to ensure that you don’t run out. Better to have some left over than to leave some guests with an empty plate.

48 Southern Minnesota Bride

Discuss any special needs you and your guests may have (e.g. vegetarian, sugarfree menu items, food allergies), and the costs associated with these. To avoid disappointment on the wedding day, make sure you test the meal you decide upon before confirming it. INTERVIEW. Start the interview process and book your caterer early in your planning process. Ask event professionals to refer a caterer who has experience with the quality, style, and organization that you are looking for. Credentials count! Are they licensed and insured? How long have they been in business? Complete a contract with the caterer you choose that includes, a listing of the foods selected, services to be provided, and the cost. Know the number of servers included, the number of hours service will be provided, and arrival and departure times. Most caterers will require a final count at least two weeks in advance. Find out about all deadlines and due dates. Regardless of the serving style and food that you choose, a festive event is the goal of every couple. Looking out into the room, and seeing your family and friends who are celebrating this day with you, is a feast for you to behold. o Announce your engagement at SouthernMNBride.com

Bride’s Guide: Selecting A Caterer

S

ome reception venues require clients to bring in their caterer of choice. If you need to plan and provide the food service there are many talented caterers who are highly qualified to meet your every catering need. Use this set of questions to guide you when selecting a caterer: • What style of food or special menu items are your specialties? Can we see pictures of previous events along with references? • Can we include a sentimental family recipe in the menu? • Given the style, time, and date of my wedding, what menu items do you suggest? Will there be a tasting of the menu we choose? • What is your cost-per-person of a buffet compared to a sit-down dinner? • How much per person should I serve? • Do you offer a children’s menu? Do you offer vegetarian or vegan options? • Have you worked at my reception site before? • What service costs are included and what costs are additional? Are setup and cleanup included and how much time is needed for setup and cleanup? • Do you provide the wait staff? What will they wear? How much is overtime if the reception runs long? How are gratuities figured?

• Do you provide or rent linens, dinnerware, tables, chairs, and serving pieces? If so, what color and style of linens, glasses, plates, and accessories are available? • Can you provide a wedding cake, and possibly a groom’s cake? If we provide them, do you charge a cake cutting and serving fee? • Do you charge for beverage service?
 • Do you have a liquor license? • If we want to provide our own wine, champagne, and liquor, do you charge a cork fee? • Will you be personally handling my wedding? If not, who will, and can I meet them? • Are you state licensed? (they have met health department standards) • Do you have liability insurance? • Can we see a copy of your standard contract? What deposit do you require to hold the date? When is the balance due? What is your cancellation policy? o

Traditionally, wedding cakes have been white or chocolate with buttercream frosting. Not necessarily so anymore. This gives you so much room to be creative with flavors and accommodating of others’ tastes. Take into consideration your groom’s favorite, your own favorite, and any family members who may have a particular liking for a unique flavor. Your choices are limitless and should be something that you have educated yourself on before you arrive at the bakery. FROSTING. Just as there are many different cake flavors, there are also many different frostings to choose from. Choices include butter cream, almond, white chocolate, dark chocolate, and cream cheese; just to name a few. Another increasingly popular choice is fondant, as it is moldable

and shapeable. A seasoned baker can make many different types of flowers, polka dots, ribbon, etc., out of their fondant. Fondant holds up better in higher temperatures, while butter cream frosting tends to melt. This may be something you will want to consider as you are making your selections. UNIQUE DESIGNS. Your cake can be traditional, or as unique as you would like it to be. Go into your meeting with ideas and pictures to help you communicate with your designer. Have a swatch of your colors to give your baker, if you are using them on the cake. Discuss other options, such as flowers and ribbon. pillars style. If this is your style then that is great, but it is not necessarily the only option anymore. BE DIFFERENT. Continue personalizing this day as you head into the dessert portion of your reception. Cupcake towers are a great way to serve an individual dessert to your guests. On the other hand, many couples are mixing it up, and offering a dessert bar stocked with family favorites, cookies, pies or chocolate fountains. TOP IT OFF. Today’s cake toppers have personality and style that mimic the bride and groom. Consider having a custom topper created to reflect the two of you. Incorporate your hobbies, interests, and personalities into the design idea. After the wedding, you will have a great keepsake (and conversation piece) for your home.

GROOM’S CAKE. If theme is an important aspect of your wedding, ask your baker to incorporate some of those elements into the groom’s cake design. Cowboy or sports themes, bright colors, even custom artwork are all possibilities. DETAILS. Aside from design and flavor, the baker will need to know how many guests will be served. Be sure to ask about cake sizes, delivery charges, deposits, and payment schedules during your meeting. You might also discuss ways to economize, such as false layers on your “fancy” cake, and ordering sheet cakes to serve your guests. TIER. This term refers to each layer, or level of a wedding cake. ROUND. This is the most traditional of shapes for a wedding cake and is cylindrical. SQUARE. If you are going for a more modern and sleek look you could try setting square tiers at different angles. HEXAGON. For a trendy and more “hip” appearance give this six-sided tier cake a try. The finished look is so eye-catching, you will not need a lot of extra detail. SCALLOPED. This shape is soft and casual, with flower-petal shaped edges. TOPSY-TURVY. Going for a more whimsical look? Then this topsy-turvy, helter-skelter cake is for you. With different shapes and angles for each tier of the cake it has a more dramatic appearance. MOLDED. This cake is more typical of the groom’s cake, and is made to represent the hobby or interest of the groom. Try a sports theme, motorcycle or a movie character. o

verybody knows everybody at Bethany Lutheran College, except Klea and Matt didn’t. Not until this attractive guy approached to talk to one of her friends, and in passing, he said, “hey Klea.” He knew her name and she wanted to know more about him. So she went to where the information is—Facebook, and to her surprise they were already friends! Klea teases Matt that he added her because he thought she was a cute incoming freshman. To this day, how they became Facebook friends remains a mystery. They both wonder how it is they didn’t meet sooner—their parents’ homes are literally ten minutes apart! A vacation in Cancun brought them beachfront, and the first thing Klea said was, “sometime this week we should take a walk on the beach!” On the last possible night they took that walk. After watching Klea write in the sand, Matt wanted his turn, and asked her not to look. He wrote his question, and in the same moment she turned back to look, a huge wave came in and washed it away! Not knowing how hard he had tried all week to get to this moment, Klea told him it wasn’t a big deal and to just rewrite it! As these words came out of her mouth she turned away, and then began to realize what might be happening. She turned around to see Matt down on one knee with “Will you marry me?” written in the sand, and of course she said yes! o 56 Southern Minnesota Bride

THE MOST MEMORABLE. Klea remembers waiting in anticipation for the chapel doors to open and to begin walking down the aisle with her dad. As well, it was an indescribable moment when their pastor announced them as husband and wife. THE MOST FUN. The girls choreographed a surprise dance to Crazy by Britney Spears for the reception. They didn’t think the guys knew anything about their dance until they came back dancing to Bringing Sexy Back by Justin Timberlake. The crowd’s reaction was priceless! Designing a beautiful wedding

I

n selecting the flowers that will add to the ambience and romance of your wedding, you will want to consider blooms that best express your personality, complement your wedding gown, and tie-in with the general look and theme you have selected for the day. GO PREPARED. Bring color and fabric swatches of your wedding apparel, both yours and the bridesmaids’ dresses, to show the florist. Bring photos that show arrangements using your favorite flowers. In choosing the right color combination, consider your own personal taste, but also the season, the time of day of the ceremony, and the atmosphere of your ceremony location. With this information, your florist will be able to suggest floral combinations and artistic treatments to create a beautiful bouquet and other arrangements. Be sure to note any flower allergies that you or your groom might have. CONSIDER COST. Flowers and greenery in season are more abundant and generally less expensive. Even though most flowers can be ordered 62 Southern Minnesota Bride

any time of year, be guided by the advice of your florist. Remember to ask if the flowers you select will hold their shape throughout the day, as temperature will be a factor in how well the blooms hold their shape. APPOINTMENT. Scheduling a personal interview is the best method for finding a florist to help you find your wedding day flowers. His or her artistry, knowledge of wedding procedures, and ability to listen to your needs will ensure that you will get a good value for your money, and have the perfect floral bouquets and accents for your wedding day. Although your flowers will not need to be ordered until a few months before your wedding date, six months is not too soon to get on the florist’s schedule, especially for an elaborate wedding. o Announce your engagement at SouthernMNBride.com

Bouquet Considerations

omplement your attire, personality, and proportions, while remaining in the theme of the day when selecting your bridal bouquet. Here are some basic considerations to factor in before making your final choice: COLOR. All-white bouquets are the most traditional choice for brides. The use of color in your bouquet is a beautiful way to express your personality. Consider using accent flowers in the hue of your bridesmaids’ dresses, or in your wedding colors. BODY TYPE. In general, a petite bride should pass on the grandiose and opt for a smaller bouquet so she is not lost behind a sea of flowers. A voluptuous or taller bride should select a bigger style of bouquet, because a small

nosegay might seem out of proportion. And the average size bride should select a medium-sized bouquet that presents a nice proportion when held in front of her body. GOWN. Consider the scale of your gown also. A common rule is, the bigger the gown, the bigger the bouquet. A simple sheath gown wouldn’t be able to hold its own against an overflowing cascade bouquet, however, a ball gown would. You will also want to consider any embellishment and not obscure the beautiful beading or lace with a large bouquet. When you meet with your floral designer, show them a photo of your dress, and they will be able to offer suggestions for the style and shape of bouquet that’s right for you. o

Bride’s Guide: Bouquet Terms CASCADE. Like a waterfall, flows downward, often with larger flowers at the top, using smaller blooms as it begins to taper down and lands gracefully over the bride’s hands. HAND-TIED. A selection of flowers that are wired or loosely gathered together and tied with a satin ribbon or a combination of ribbon and lace. This has more of a natural, garden look. NOSEGAY. Consists of a densely packed mound of flowers and greenery tied together with a wire, ribbon, or other item. POSY. A smaller version of the nosegay, perfect for bridesmaids, and also a great alternative to the mother’s corsage.

PAGEANT. Long-stemmed flowers cradled in the bride’s arm that flow naturally from the elbow, while the rest should be comfortably resting on her hand. ROUND. The classic round bouquet, usually compiled of large flowers that are loosely arranged. This shape and style is less conspicuous than a cascade bouquet, yet bolder than a simple nosegay. POMANDER. A small, compact bloom-covered ball that is usually four to six inches in diameter and suspended from a ribbon worn around the wrist. TOSS BOUQUET. Solely made for the bouquet toss. Try something different and have three made into one, a nice surprise for the single ladies at your event. o

The Angle of a perfect day

ong after your wedding day is over, your photographs will provide lasting memories. With that in mind, you not only need to find a photographer that you feel comfortable with, but you also need to do some homework, to know what options are available, and what shots should not be missed. MEMORIES ARE FOREVER. Photographs are one of the few things that last forever from your wedding day. Do not gamble on it, hire a professional. Capturing your memories is in their hands. Just as you have invested time in choosing the person you are marrying, invest time in choosing a talented photographer who is a good match for you. Do not let price be your sole factor in hiring the photographer, quality pictures will be treasured forever. COMMUNICATE. Open and clear communication is essential to getting the great wedding photos you expect. Share your expectations, and never assume that your photographer knows what you want. Vague terms, like “modern,” “colorful,” “close-up,”

and “artistic” can mean two very different things to a bride and her photographer. The only way to be sure everyone is on the same page is to go through sample shots together, identify ones you like, and explain why you chose those particular images. If you have certain shots you want taken, ask for them. Talk with your photographer, and be honest about your expectations. Making a “must-have” list will help ensure nothing is missed on your wedding day. YOUR STYLE. Do you have a mental picture of what your wedding photos will look like? Photojournalistic or traditional; dramatic colors or black and white; serious or silly and fun? Find a photographer whose work shows connection, u Southern Minnesota Bride 69

Photography passion, and talent, who specializes in a style that aligns with yours. If possible, visit the ceremony and reception locations with your photographer, or provide pictures of it, to discuss how to use the landscape in pictures. The photojournalistic style captures moments, rather than poses, because the photographer doesn’t “direct” the participants or guests. The result is candid, and spontaneous images conveying genuine emotion, while capturing the story of your day as it naturally unfolds. You will end up with a wide array of shots and captured moments, some you may not have even witnessed, and they will serve as a record of the great time your guests had at your wedding. Traditional, formal photography refers to the typical posed pictures. These usually consist of the wedding party, the

70 Southern Minnesota Bride

couples’ families, the shots of the bridesmaids with their bouquets, the groom with his parents, the happy couple gazing into each other’s eyes, etc. The upside of traditional photography is that it gives you a set of professional photos of your family and loved ones. In general, most photographers take both styles. Be clear if you prefer more of one type. Be sure to request traditional portraits of your families. Getting everyone together at one time can be hard, so your weddings is a great place to capture one of those few-and-far-between family photos. u

SCHEDULED SHOTS. Having a wedding day schedule ensures you will have plenty of time to get all of the photographs taken. Your photographer can help you establish a schedule, taking into account your photography goals, as well as your desire to have fun. Instead of having the wedding party and family members milling around for several hours, give them the schedule showing when they need to be there. Remember to schedule alone time to reflect on the commitment you just made to each other. Once the wedding gets started there is no stopping and going back. Most photographers agree, if the shot is not scheduled, it may not happen. You can not go back to get the photographs you miss and wished you had, so confidence in, and communication with your photographer is key.

The first look. There is only one moment when the groom sees his bride for the first time, and then it’s over. Seeing each other before the ceremony is a subject debated by almost every couple. What are you going to do? There is no wrong answer, and photographers agree that there are pros and cons to either way. Some couples feel when their eyes meet for the first time, with the eyes of all their guests on them, is less romantic. Others say, no matter where they see each other, it is a wonderfully romantic moment. Choosing to have your photograph taken with each other before the ceremony gives you a more private moment, and a longer time to be with just each other. It is the most important day of your lives, and it is powerful when you continued on page 75 u

Schedule an Engagement Session

A

fter you book your photographer, schedule an engagement session to spend some time getting to know him or her. You may consider opting out of this step, or think that just having a friend take your engagement pictures is good enough, but you will be thankful for what you gain by using your day-of photographer. The engagement session gives you and your fiancé a chance to get to know your photographer, and how he or she works, and interacts with you before the wedding day. You will be more comfortable the day of the wedding knowing that all of your personalities blend. Having pictures taken can be uncomfortable for a lot of people; engagement sessions can ease any tension and anxiety. Your photographer will get to know the two of you; will find out if your eyes blink a lot; if you need help in some posed shots (what do I do with my hands? should I look at you? look away?); discover the angles that look best for your facial expressions. This session will save time when creating a “timeless portraiture” on your wedding day. o 76 Southern Minnesota Bride

Tips for a Great Photo Session 1. Share your ideas! Talk to your photographer about locations you would like to go to, and your ideas. Maybe you would love to have more candid pictures taken in a coffee shop. The better you communicate about what you are looking for in your pictures, the more likely you’ll get it. 2. Look Amazing! Bring several outfits to choose the clothes that go best with each background. It is important for your clothes to complement and look good next to each other, but try to avoid looking like twins. Solids are great and look good next to almost any backdrop. 3. Have Fun! Your engagement session should be stress-free and relaxed. It is an experience to enjoy together. These photos are great to use for engagement announcements, wedding invitations, or to decorate the guest book and reception tables. Announce your engagement at SouthernMNBride.com

session to show who they are together. Be creative, go do something you love, and bring your photographer along with you. Finally, the most important factor in choosing a photographer is whether you like their style. Remember, your photographer will be the eyes for capturing your memories. You want someone who has a vision similar to your own. o

hanging your name is one of the first things you will have to do after your wedding. Whether you take your husband’s last name, or choose to hyphenate your name, you will have to inform the government, and companies you do business with, of your legal name change. Get an original or notarized copy of the marriage license. Call the clerk’s office where the license was filed for details on how the get a copy. There will be a fee. When you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to change your driver’s license, bring a notarized copy of your marriage license, an identity document, such as a birth certificate, your social security card, W-2 form, and two documents to prove your residential address.

80 Southern Minnesota Bride

To update your Social Security card you will find the application available at the Social Security Administration’s website, or at the local office. You will keep your same number—just your name will get updated. Your bank accounts, bills, and insurance should happen easier. Contact each to inform them of your name and address change. Some will just require a phone call, while others may ask for documents. If you are going on a honeymoon right after your wedding you should not change your name before leaving. Your new name has to match all travel documents, most importantly, your passport—processing name changes on passports generally takes anywhere from four to six weeks. o

VIDEOGRAPHY

Moving Moments

V

ideography is an art that uses high-tech equipment to capture events. Professional videographers use professional-grade cameras, software, computers and sound equipment to get the event on film, and ultimately on to DVD. Still photographs can not always capture the fluid movement of the bride making her way down the aisle, or the trembling of the groom’s hands as he sees her for the first time. Stills do not always fully capture the way her parent’s hug her before she steps up to the alter, the emotion he shows as he sings to his bride, or the funny way she spills her sand over the edge of the vase. Interviews are key to successfully selecting a videographer. Ask how much experience the filmmaker has with weddings, as well, ask to see several samples of their wedding videos. Always ask for referrals from their former clients. This will help you choose your vendor. Be sure to include a professional videographer in your budget. You will have had great food, a wonderful venue, and a lot of other wedding memories, but if you do not budget video into the mix, you will miss having it in the future. You will miss hearing your voices, and seeing the emotion on your faces from your wedding day. A sure way to fully capture and remember these moments is with a video. o

well-planned details

ou will make arrangements with several suppliers in the months leading up to your celebration. Your wedding day is a celebration for everyone, especially for you and your family. Minding all of the details is essential to being organized, so communicate your plan with all of your vendors and they will do their part to make your day go smoothly. COORDINATE. Many people imagine a planner as someone following a checklist and making the day go smoothly, which is true, but there are many more benefits to hiring a consultant—utilizing their training, expertise, and their contacts to help you in many planning roles as advisor, coordinator, price negotiator, and family mediator. How much time will it take to plan your wedding, and do you have that kind of time? Planning, booking, and coordinating with as many as ten or more different vendors can be a fulltime job in itself. If your life is already busy, getting help is essential. Many consultants offer different levels of service, ranging from full service, start-to-finish management, to basic, 82 Southern Minnesota Bride

day-of coordinating. Hiring a professional wedding consultant often makes the difference between truly enjoying the celebration and having it blow by in a blur of details. DÉCOR STYLE. Do you envision your wedding as fun and modern, or sophisticated and traditional? Maybe you want a cultural celebration. Today’s creative brides are using so much more than the typical candles and balloons to reflect their style in decorations and centerpieces. Consider your colors, the season, and the theme for your wedding and have the reception room decorated accordingly. If you are considering a themed wedding, do not overdo it. Gentle reminders will keep guests entertained by it instead of overwhelmed. u Announce your engagement at SouthernMNBride.com

HELP DECORATING. Professional decorators have an inventory of items that can be utilized to carry out your colors and theme. They have the ability to pull off a themed wedding because they know when enough is enough. It is a wise investment to hire them to decorate with centerpieces, arches, vases, mirrors, and more, that you will only use for one day. You can have the wedding of your dreams without the major expense of buying, and the hassle of getting rid of everything. If you choose to go with an outdoor wedding, let nature do some of the work for you. Use the luxury of the

natural surroundings and decorate with the beauty of the great outdoors. Overdoing the decorating will take away from this if you’re not careful. RENTALS. A fully-equipped rental business will have a wide selection of wedding accessories, including arches, candelabra, plant stands, and aisle runners. They will also have several colors and styles in linens, china, glassware, and serving pieces to choose from. A photo booth is an amazing way to ensure that your guests will walk away from your event with a smile on their face and a memory in their hand. BEVERAGE SERVICE. Most people associate weddings with champagne; its sparkling bubbles are the customary choice for toasts. But wines—both reds and whites—are just as important to the menu and should be taken into consideration when creating the perfect wine and dinner pair.

Mcreationss Photography

u

Wine store tastings and wine bars, with their extensive, by-the-glass offerings, are great sampling grounds. Look for at least one red wine and one white to serve at your celebration. It is sensible to make your wine selections at the same time you are deciding on the menu. Conventional wisdom says that whites go best with chicken and fish, and reds with meats. Choose wines that would be appealing to almost any palette. Super sweet or super dry wines usually only appeal to a certain number of guests. Find one that is somewhat in-between to be satisfying to almost everyone. Most venues provide a bar with a wide variety of spirits, wines, and beer. Providing an open bar will triple your wedding budget. Consider offering beer on tap for your guests if cost is a concern. This can be a perfect compromise for both your guests and your wallet. o

FFICIATE. This is your special day. It will only happen once, so you will want to find a minister or wedding officiant with an engaging ceremony that can leave your guests inspired. Discuss with your fiancé your beliefs and ideas to ensure a ceremony that is meaningful to both of you. Write down ideas for questions, whether they seem to make sense or not. A professional wedding officiant will be willing to answer all of your questions. Plan to meet with and get to know the officiant or minister who will solemnize your wedding. Your ceremony will be more meaningful when your officiant knows more than just your name. Meeting in

advance will also give everyone a chance to make sure your personalities blend. The officiant will help match your personal desires with the type of ceremony you would like to have to create your unique service. For instance, you may not choose the same components for an informal outdoor wedding versus a formal religious ceremony in a church. Consider meeting with your pastor for pre-marital counseling before the wedding to discuss your relationship, love, marriage, and commitment. o Ashley Marie Photography

o you want traditional designs with formal wording or a contemporary design with your own wording? Rely on a business that can create and customize your wedding stationery. Send save-the-date cards up to a year in advance to get onto your guest’s calendars. Wedding invitations should be sent at least six weeks before your wedding to give your guests ample time to reply and make travel arrangements. With the invitation, include a response card (R.S.V.P.) if you are serving a meal, and a stamped envelope for your guest to return it in. Some brides are now using online R.S.V.P. sites for their guests to use.

88 Southern Minnesota Bride

Begin your search for the perfect stationery design at least three months in advance of the wedding, to ensure time for designing, printing, proofing, addressing, mailing and replies. Once you have decided to work with a particular wedding vendor, sign a detailed, written contract to ensure both you, and the vendors know what is expected on your wedding day. Reconfirm your arrangements several weeks before your wedding, especially for services that were discussed many months before the actual date. Careful planning will enable you to truly enjoy every moment of your wedding day. o

Fun and Unforgettable

ntertainment that is fun, unforgettable and uniquely yours is what you are looking for, right? You want your guests to dance and have fun. You want your introductions, your first dance, and all of your special moments to be unforgettable. You want your entire day to be uniquely yours, and not a generic production. Music sets the tone from the wedding ceremony to the last dance. It heightens emotions, creates atmosphere, fills awkward silences, and gets us to dance. Work closely with your DJ to ensure your celebration is memorable by following these tips: VARIETY. After all of the formality of the ceremony, you and your guests are ready to relax and get the party started! Your choice of music should be enjoyable for everyone at your reception, both older guests, as well as younger guests. Consider playing varied music that is appropriate for the various segments of your reception. Be sure to discuss the volume level and genre of music that you want played during each of the time periods. Ask your DJ or band for a copy of

90 Southern Minnesota Bride

their play list to highlight the songs you would like played during the reception. This is a great way for you to select specific dance music, rather than expecting them to select songs from your preferred genre of music. A professional disc jockey (DJ) acquires their good reputation from their ability to get guests involved at an event, so ask for referrals. ADAPT. You want a DJ for the wedding reception entertainment who has the ability to go with the flow. If you picked a first song months ago, but on the way to the wedding you heard a more perfect song on the radio, can they change your first dance with this little notice? Most DJs tend to have a ton of popular music in their book of albums and Announce your engagement at SouthernMNBride.com

can accommodate your change. If you ask your DJ to act as master of ceremony, discuss the level of involvement you want, and work closely with them in planning, so they can keep your reception on schedule. INTERVIEW. Have a phone interview with them first to determine if they are available on your wedding date. Ask about their experience level, their equipment quality, and if they have a back up system. Determine the variety and versatility of their song list, the cost of their services, amount of the deposit, and the due date for the final payment. Be sure to ask for references. When you have all of this information gathered, select the entertainment that best meets your needs. Ensure that the following are stated in your contract with your DJ or band: date and loca-

tion, music start and end times, number and duration of breaks, and total cost. Ask if they would be willing to include an option to play beyond the agreed upon end time, just in case the reception runs long. DETAILS. It is a good idea to ask your band or DJ to contact the reception site to discuss specifics to avoid potential disasters. Your reception venue may have time or volume level restrictions, and limited electrical usage. It is best to get these issues addressed before the day of your wedding. Professional DJs and musicians are exactly that...professionals who are knowledgeable and creative. They will have professional-level equipment, with a back-up system available, to avoid the chance that your reception would be without music. o

pecial occasions call for special rides, and besides, cruising around in style is a great perk for your wedding party. To make sure you arrive in style, and get to the church on time, be prepared with a few questions to ask: • Do you have my date available? • How many people can comfortably fit in the vehicle? • What are the hourly rates? • When can we see the vehicle? • What kind of training do the drivers receive? • Do the drivers have uniforms? • Are all insurance and state licenses current? • Are beverages included? Can we bring our own? • When is the payment due? Is there a contract to sign? Wedding Day Transportation

T

ransportation on a wedding day used to be fairly basic. However, these days couples are making arrangements for more of their guests, and have more options available to them. To help you make decisions, take these ideas into consideration when booking your transportation: CONSIDERING ALL. You are responsible for providing transportation for your wedding party and both sets of parents the day of the wedding. Typically, the best man is in charge of getting the groom and the other groomsmen to the ceremony site on time. After the ceremony the groom then joins the bride on the way to the reception. If you choose to ride alone as a couple you will need to arrange a second option for the wedding party. SELECTION. Different varieties of limousines, vans, trolleys, and even horse-drawn carriages are available. You will want to include the cost in your budget, so start researching and checking the local options early. Book your transportation six months in advance—especially if you are getting

married during prom season or on a very popular wedding day. ASK QUESTIONS. Talk to several rental companies. Do not just book a vehicle or carriage over the phone— see it first. Make sure it has air conditioning. Find out how many people fit in each vehicle as it gets awkward and uncomfortable when fourteen people squeeze into a vehicle meant for ten! TIME TO RIDE. If your ceremony and reception site are close to each other, you might want to stay simple with your choice, since you won’t be in it for long. However, if you want to be chauffeured around for an extended time, check out an option with all the bells and whistles, go ahead and splurge! SAFE AND ON TIME. Rides out their own transportation, you may want to consider providing transportation to get them to and from the ceremony and reception locations as well. Providing a shuttle service to pick them up and deliver them would be a nice touch, and ensures that they won’t be late because they got lost. It is a good idea to have cab information, or the same shuttle service available to your guests following the reception. This is especially true if alcohol has been served. You do not want any tragedy to occur on this day, and planning ahead for these circumstances will help to ensure only happy memories. GET IT IN WRITING. As with any reservations you make, you want to be

s you prepare to look your best for what may be the single most important and memorable day of your life, you will want to consider some of these beauty enhancement options: skin and body care routines, slimming and toning, picture-perfect makeover, and hair style, facials, massages, tanning, manicures, spa pedicures, and teeth whitening. SKIN CARE. Nothing is more beautiful than the natural glow of happiness that becomes every bride on her wedding day. To help that glow along you will want to schedule a series of facials with your last facial no later than two weeks before the big day. Implement a daily skin care routine to care for your facial skin. Skin care consultants recommend three basic steps: cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize. You can add other products to treat any special needs to help repair and rejuvenate your skin. Exfoliate your body weekly to achieve a healthy shine, paying special attention to the parts of your skin that will be on show in your dress. Remember to use body cream with sunscreen to smooth, moisten, and protect the skin.

WORKOUTS. Unfortunately, those fifteen-minute fixes for dropping some weight and tightening the muscles just do not work. You know the drill here: a combination of a reasonable, but restricted diet, with both weightbearing, and fat-burning exercises will yield a slimmer, tauter body. Whether you want to lose ten or thirty pounds, this will take some time, so start six months to one year prior to your wedding. There are some great local gyms and businesses specializing in slimming and toning for women. NEW LOOK. Who would not benefit from a makeover? Have you become comfortable with your current colors and never quite got around to updating your look? Well, your upcoming wedding is a great Announce your engagement at SouthernMNBride.com

reason to try out a new makeup program. Wearing a foundation that gives you a clean, smooth, natural look is ideal. Apply your makeup lighter for an everyday look and heavier for a dramatic look for photographs. Keep in mind that your cheeks will be flushed all night, and with overdone blush you will look too red in person and in pictures. It is inevitable that a few tears will be shed, so prevent the black tracks down your face by using waterproof mascara. Have a picture taken of your new look at the same time of day as your wedding, and remember flash photography is less forgiving than what you see in a mirror. Get your makeover early so you can begin using your new look and easily recreate it on your wedding day. UPDO AND CURLS. For your wedding hairstyle, bring a photo of the style you have chosen with you to your stylist. Rely on their experience to help you discover what style flatters you most. Have your bridesmaids do the same, so your entire wedding party has a consistent, complimentary look. Wearing your hair in an updo shows off the neckline and shoulders, and is always flattering. On the other hand, wear your hair down to show off your

tresses and go for the sexy, wavy look. Several weeks prior to the wedding, do a trial run of this style. Bring your veil and any other hair accessories with you to this appointment. Consider the wedding day schedule and set your hair appointment accordingly. Wear a buttonup shirt to protect your style when you change into your dress. You will need to allow enough time for make-up application after your hair is complete and before you put on your dress. SPA-TASTIC. It is never too early to relieve the stress you may be encountering during this sometimes-chaotic time. Most massage therapists offer discountpriced massage packages when you pay for several massages in advance. In the months prior to your wedding, think of massage as something you want access to on a regular basis! In the weeks leading up to the big day, consider a full service spa package including a soothing facial, body polish, waxing, spa pedicure, and a manicure. You deserve to be pampered. NAIL CARE. Your hands will be on stage for the entire day—signing the certificate, showing off your rings, shaking hands—you will want them looking pretty, polished and feminine. u

Painting your nails a dark color such as burgundy, even if that is your wedding color, may make you cringe when you later look at your wedding pictures. Your hands will jump out and scream “bad trend! in every photo. Do yourself a favor and choose a pretty pale pink or nude for your wedding day manicure. Use the burgundy on your toes. SMILE. The appearance of your teeth can dramatically affect the way you feel about your pictures. For both brides and grooms, simple whitening may be desired, while others may opt for more. Beauty your regular skin care schedule and avoid new products—including shampoos or makeup—during the month before your wedding. Experiment with different hairstyles, but then choose the one you are most comfortable with, the one that is most you. You don’t want to look back at photos of the special day and wonder, “who is that?” Avoid trying trendy, new hair colors or cuts in the months leading up to the wedding and then being disappointed in it, leaving you no time to grow it out. Consult a professional to learn what flatters your features. Remember, your fiancé is expecting to see the woman he knows and loves walking down that isle. PLAN AHEAD. Set a schedule that anticipates some of your most impor-

tant health and beauty needs you want to address prior to your wedding day. Ideally, you should begin three to four months before your wedding, even thirty days is adequate for the most important self-care rituals. Trying to do too much a day or two before the wedding can result in a litany of problems that really could have been easily avoided. Beauty session. You will want to build a base tan and remember, the number one rule is never, ever burn. SPRAY TANNING. If you have type 1 skin (white, very fair, freckles, always burns, never tans) then spray tanning is an excellent choice. The process involves a professional spraying a solution onto the skin that develops a tanned ap-

pearance on the surface of the skin. The development of color takes anywhere from two to four hours and usually lasts five to seven days. The amount of days that a spray tan lasts varies, so have a practice spray tan at least two weeks prior to your wedding day to be sure of the results. For best results, moisturize twice a day. o

PLAN YOUR DREAM VACATION

lanning A honeymoon takes almost as much forethought as planning a wedding. Both are loaded with details that must be attended to ahead of time for your plans to go smoothly. Follow these ideas to make your honeymoon a carefree vacation: Working with a certified travel agent will save you time, and money. Travel professionals know all of the ins and outs of a destination, and will have invaluable local advice to make your honeymoon as safe and enjoyable as possible. One great advantage of hiring a travel agent is the peace of mind you will have knowing that

if something goes wrong your agent can help you get through it. All-inclusive resorts can be very affordable and offer many different restaurant options, spa packages, and activities to do as a couple. A travel agent can help you sort through all of your options. Consider the climate where u

HOneymoon you are vacationing, and pack accordingly for the weather, as well as for the possible activities you will be doing. Be sure to use sunscreen, you do not want to spend your honeymoon in the hotel room soaking in aloe. Start making a list of the items you will need so that when the time arrives you don’t have to rush and forget items. If you plan an international trip it will take time to get your passports, and medical clearances. If there is a currency difference it may be more beneficial to do an exchange before you leave the country. Begin early to avoid the stress of waiting for your credentials to arrive. Major credit cards and travelers checks offer fraud protection, carry these not cash. Be sure to have your travel agent’s

contact information with you for help if needed. Check into traveler’s insurance for a policy that offers protection in the event of a natural disaster or illness. Hurricanes happen, and insurance is great in these unlikely events to ensure you get your money refunded, or your honeymoon rescheduled. Check with your travel agent a few days before the wedding to confirm your plans. Then prepare to have an amazing first vacation as husband and wife. It doesn’t matter where you decide to go for your honeymoon, just go. Even if you only take a few days at a bed and breakfast near home, it’s time spent together you will not regret! o

We’re in this together

lthough it is difficult to imagine now, the time will come when your wedding ceremony and reception have been successfully completed and your thank-you notes have been sent. It is will then be time to do some more planning...for a future that may include children, a new home, and other financial obligations. Buying a home may seem out of reach, however, when you take into consideration the available mortgage programs, and the tax benefits of home ownership, you can probably afford to purchase a house. Plus, buying a home is an investment that you will make. When you pay rent, that money is simply gone forever. When you invest in a house, this money continues to work for you. A realtor can recommend communities and neighborhoods that fit your style and budget. Remember that your first home will likely be a starter home. Get into your first house as soon as practical, rather than waiting until you can afford your dream home. Appreciation in the value of 104 Southern Minnesota Bride

a house and tax deductions are big benefits to home ownership. It does not matter if you got married on January 1st or December 31st, the IRS considers your status as married for the whole year. Tax laws can be complicated, so get advice from a tax professional when preparing your returns when you have a change in marital status. It is time to settle into your new life together. Through all the changes that married life brings, make sure you take time for each other, and enjoy your new life together. Life is like a roller coaster ride, with lots of ups and downs. sharing the cost In terms of wedding planning, the bride’s family once paid virtually all of the nuptial expenses. Societal changes have loosened this rule a bit. Probably the most useful approach for a bride and groom and their families to take when making wedding plans is to be communicative, realistic, and courteous. Weddings are expensive and there are times when tradition should bow to practicality. Some expenses the bride and groom can assume themselves, and perhaps the groom’s family is willing to help out. Below is the traditional division of expenses. To avoid conflict, discuss these financial obligations frankly and thoroughly from the beginning.

— Bride’s Family — • Invitations, announcements, and postage • Bride’s wedding attire and trousseau • Cost of the ceremony including rental of sanctuary, chapel or other facility, organist, soloist and sexton fees, aisle carpets, flowers, and any additional decorating costs • Bridesmaids’ bouquets • Cost of the reception including food, wedding cake, beverages, flowers, decorations, music, rental equipment and gratuities for the bartenders and waiters • Engagement and wedding photographs • Transportation • Wedding gift for the newlyweds • Wedding consultant • Any welcome parties for out-of-town guests

— Bride — • Groom’s ring • Gift for the groom • Gifts for her attendants • Lodging for her out-of-town attendants (optional) • Bridesmaids’ luncheon • Gift for parents

— Groom’s Family — • Their wedding attire • Wedding gift for the newlyweds • Rehearsal dinner • Their travel expenses and hotel bills • Shipment of wedding gifts to the bridal couple’s new home

— Groom — • Bride’s engagement and wedding rings • Gift for the bride • Marriage license • Fee for clergy officiant • Gifts for best man, groomsmen, and ushers • Bridal bouquet and going away corsage • Boutonnieres for all men in wedding party • Mothers’ and Grandmothers’ corsages • Lodging for out-of-town attendants (optional) • Honeymoon • Bachelors’ dinner (optional) • Gift for parents

— Attendants and Ushers — • Their wedding attire selected by the bride • Travel expenses and lodging • Parties for the bride and groom • Wedding gift for the couple

Budget thoughts A realistic wedding budget is absolutely essential and should be one of the first things you do. Know how much money you have to spend and on what it should be spent. By keeping budget in mind you will be able to make the right decisions when making choices. Here are a few questions you may want to discuss before developing your final budget.

— Budget —

— Food / Catering —

How much do you want to spend? Are the necessary funds available? Size of wedding party? How many guests will be invited?

Do you want a caterer separate from your venue? Sit-down service or buffet? Will appetizers be served during cocktail hour? Alcohol Will there be alcohol? Full bar or limited to beer, champagne and wine?

— Ceremony — Where will you hold it? Indoors or outdoors? Church or venue? Reception Formal or casual? Ballroom or hall? Does the venue you like provide services like catering and bar service or will you arrange it yourself?

— Attire —

— Entertainment — Will you have an orchestra or organist at the ceremony? Band, DJ or both? What other sort of entertainment will be needed? Invitations Letterpress or printed? Custom designed or just customized? Will you be sending save the dates? What inserts will be required with the invitations?

Do you want a designer gown or off-the-rack? Purchase or rent formalwear?

— Transportation —

— Photography — What style do you prefer, posed or photojournalistic? Will you want video? Do you want a beautiful leather-bound photo book or something less expensive?

— Wedding Cake — Do you want a custom designed cake or something smaller with sheet cake service?

How will you travel from the ceremony to the reception. Will you provide rented transportation for the entire wedding party? Will your venue location require valet parking or shuttle service? Once you decide on your priorities, it will guide you in setting your budget. Once your budget is set, stick to it by using our handy budget worksheets (starting on the adjacent page) to keep you on task.

Your Planning Guide 123

The Wedding Party Bride and groom should choose attendants six to nine months ahead. A formal wedding party consists of Best Man, Maid or Matron of Honor, Bridesmaids, Groomsmen, Ring Bearer, Flower Girl, and Ushers. Groomsmen may also serve as ushers. For a semi-formal wedding, choose two to six attendants each, and for an informal wedding, choose one honor attendant with one extra bridesmaid or groomsman.
