Police want to interview this man after a gay commuter ended up with deep bite 104 SHOPPING DAYS TO CHRISTMAS! wounds in his hand following an anti-gay attack on the train from Victoria. BY NIALL MCMURRAY THE VICTIM, aged 38, was coming back from Victoria just after midnight on Friday 19 September. He was forced to endure a barrage of homophobic abuse before his attacker sank his teeth into him, giving him a deep bite wound in his hand. The severity of the attack has prompted British Transport Police to issue a CCTV image of a man they want to question in connection with the incident. “This was a particularly nasty attack,” says PC Henrik Gottler. “Allegations of hate crime offences are treated very seriously by British
Transport Police, and we are eager to track down the perpetrator.” The attacker was about 5ft 8 inches tall, of medium build and was wearing a white shirt with red stripes and dark trousers. In response to offences like these, British Transport Police has recently set up a Public Protection Unit to deal specifically with hate crimes. Dedicated detectives are on hand to offer specialist care to victims. Anyone with information should contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or the Witness Appeal Line on 0207 3915275.

Thieves are particularly active at this time of year, as Police LGBT Liasion Officer Bobby Newton points out. “With many people doing their Christmas shopping over the next few weeks, the opportunities for thieves increase,” he says. “Such incidents are distressing at any time but they’re particularly upsetting during the festive season.” Bobby has put together some tips to help prevent Christmas crime exclusively for one80news.

Each city dweller needs the equivalent of fifteen football pitches when the earth can only offer us about four. As councillors, it is up to us to show leadership and give the city direction. With that in mind the council recently launched its One Planet City plan to promote a shared vision on how we can live within the planet’s means. This entails using less energy, more sustainable transport, reducing waste, growing food, saving water and preserving habitats. As well as leading the debate we’re also trying to offer practical solutions on how to cut carbon and support sustainability. The council has launched an online Business Guide to Climate Change which aims to encourage and inspire local to play their part in protecting the environment. The guide is packed with ideas and advice on how they help save the planet, and possibly save cash too. The free guide can be found by going to www. brighton-hove.gov.uk and searching for ‘towards a low carbon economy’. Our second initiative is to become a United Nations Biosphere Reserve. These reserves are usually pristine rural areas like Braunton Burrows sand dunes in Devon. But the UN is interested in extending the principle to cities. It’s a big ambition that could take twenty years. However we have an excellent record to build on – a good collection of green buildings, an award-winning bus service, and more people cycling and walking, for example. People in our city are very environmentally aware. And if an urban biosphere can happen anywhere, it can happen here.

Letters to the editor IN DEFENCE OF GAY PARENTING
JOBFAIR CANCELLATION
FOLLOWING THE PASSING of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, which provides equal legal recognition for the children of same-sex parents, the ensuing narrow-minded debates have been almost laughable. For instance, the incessant questioning about whether it’s ‘right’ that a gay couple can parent a child in the absence of the opposite sex role model, whether that child will turn out ‘normal’, or be bullied at school because they’ve been brought up in a gay family. My mum is a lesbian, and until I was sixteen she and her then partner brought me up. Yes, I got a little bullied at school, but kids are cruel. If it weren’t that then they’d have bullied me for something else. As I’ve grown older I’ve met more and more people whose parents have come out much later in life, often long after bringing up kids with or without a same-sex partner. To my knowledge their parenting skills have never been questioned.
REGRETFULLY, WE HAVE decided to cancel th LGBT Jobfair in Brighton on 20 Nov at Hove Tow Hall. Although we have had an enthusiastic respons from our core group of exhibitors, it is not qu enough to make the event viable – and the fact that current events are creating a climate of unce tainty and caution. It simply feels that the time not right. Since their inception in 2004, the LGBT Jo fairs in Brighton have been very warm, welcom ing and much appreciated occasions – we wa to thank everyone for their generous particpatio and we look forward to working together aga The goodwill of LGBT friendly employers is s there, and the LGBT Jobfairs will continue - we be back! Spearheading the fight for clean air A Brighton-based charity is determined to make the city a better place for all of us to work, rest and play. WE ALL know that the city of Brighton and Hove is famous for its diversity, cosmopolitan outlook and green credentials. In fact, places to live don’t come much greener than Brighton. Brightonians spend more than anyone else on green products, they vote in higher numbers for green politicians and last year Brighton was voted the most sustainable city in the UK. But here is a less well-known fact about Brighton and its close relationship with the environment: it is home to the oldest environmental protection charity not only in the UK, but the world. Environmental Protection UK (until recently named the National Society for Clean Air) was originally established in 1898 as the Coal Smoke Abatement Society. Its founding purpose was to clean up the choking smogs that blighted Victorian cities at the height of the Industrial Revolution. The charity was responsible for getting the Clean Air Acts passed in the 1950s after the infamous pea-soupers that killed thousands of people in London and Manchester. In recent years the charity has broadened its remit to tackle other pollution issues such as noise and contaminated land. Environmental Protection UK is a unique organisation as it brings together members from industry, local government, regulators, academ-
www.environmental-protection.org.uk ics, students and concerned members of the public. Although it has a long history, steeped in the establishment, the charity has recently undertaken a modernisation programme that repositions it as a forward looking, energetic, non-governmental organisation that is able to address current environmental concerns with sensible, cost-effective policy proposals. Philip Mulligan, the charity’s Chief Executive, took on the task of turning the slightly dated national

treasure into the lively and savvy outfit that now fits so well with the dynamics and profile of its Brighton home. “We are working for cleaner, quieter, healthy local environments,” says Mulligan. “Air pollution in the UK still kills more than ten times as many people as die on the roads and noise is a growing concern for many of us who are exposed to harmful and disturbing levels of sound for longer and longer periods. In Brighton we have some of the worst
air quality in the country; add to that the noise we experience from traffic, neighbours in our densely populated living spaces and entertainment noise that is getting louder and going on longer, and you can see why our work is so important.” But it is not just improving the local quality of life that drives Environmental Protection UK, not when there are also issues of global significance that affect us all. Climate change is towards the top of the agenda for government, many businesses and a large proportion of the population. Environmental Protection UK’s response has been to draw on its traditional strengths and knowledge and argue that it is more effective to be simultaneously addressing climate change and air pollution. As Mulligan says, “After all, the sources of emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants are the same. We estimate that tackling both issues together will save around 40% in total costs in the long run, not to mention the fact that improving air quality will save lives now, especially of the most vulnerable.” Although by its new name, Environmental Protection UK is not yet established as part of brand Brighton, the charity, with its long history and ability to deliver real improvements to the places we all live and work in, can truly be seen as one of the emeralds in Brighton’s green crown.

Mad about the Boy The most outspoken pop star of this or any other generation hits town. IT IS A TRUTH universally acknowledged that there is nothing new in pop – every generation has its own equivalent of what’s gone before. The tabloid feeding frenzy surrounding the drug-addled and very public breakdown of Amy Winehouse is merely this decade’s equivalent of the circus that surrounded Boy George in 1986, when his own battles with heroin prompted the infamous ‘Junkie George Has Eight Weeks to Live’ headline in The Sun. In 1982 though, George was something new. By this point men in eyeliner were nothing to get worked up about - Bowie and Bolan had desensitised the world to that particular fashion - but set against the backdrop of Thatcherism, rising unemployment and the relative safety of Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, the sight of - a man? a woman? a rag doll? on Top of the Pops led to a national fascination that has endured to this day.
The look was perfect, the songs sublime, the quotes outrageous. His most famous statement - that he preferred a cup of tea to sex - bolstered his mainstream acceptance to the point where even grandmothers loved him. George became a genuine worldwide phenomenon - first as a hero and then, as stories began to emerge of drug problems, as a pariah. Sound familiar? Cut to 2008, and after more than twentyfive years of stardom and notoriety, George is back - this time to remind us that first and foremost he is a songwriter and performer. His show at the Theatre Royal on Sun 2 Nov promises a run through his extensive collection of classics (taking in Culture Club, Jesus Loves You and solo material) plus the debut of some new songs, including latest single Yes We Can, a song apparently inspired by Barack Obama’s roof-raising speech. Showing absolutely no signs of slowing down, it looks like there’s plenty more to come from this particular Boy.

Making work for idle hands It used to be the devil’s job, but now the good people at the Brighton Dome have taken over, with a series of inventive workshops. NO MATTER how culturally advanced you might think you are, there’s always room to improve your skill-set, and with the Brighton Dome’s autumn season of workshops underway, now is your chance to add a few strings to your bow. Fancy fine-tuning your vocal instrument? Then Sing-a-Long-a-Sandwich (from Mon 3 Nov) is just the thing for you. Run by singing teacher and cabaret performer Lorraine Bowen (who’s performed with the Brighton and Hove (Actually) Gay Men’s Chorus, among many others), the workshops promise to ‘put the good times into lunchtimes’, with warm-ups, exercises, rounds and medleys, all designed to give your lungs a good workout and put a spring in your step. “People really blossom over the five weeks,” says Lorraine. “It’s like a gym for the voice, and we really have fun with our Credit Crunch
medley of Money (That’s What I Want), If I Were A Rich Man, and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire!” Coming up later in the month is the Stomp workshop, which gives you the chance to join the ranks of the world-famous dance troupe and work out a few of your aggressions on dustbin lids. A noisy, energetic and fun-filled hour is guaranteed with this one. The end of the month brings Musical in a Weekend, where from Friday to Sunday you’ll help write, create and perform a brand new musical with acclaimed director and composer Harry Blake. “It’s the first time we’ve done a project quite like this,” says Harry, audibly thrilled at the prospect. “It’s extremely exciting and daunting in equal measures!”. Aspiring performers of all ages and abilities are welcome, so if you’ve ever wanted to tread the boards, this is your chance! The weekend
Sing-a-long-a-sandwich
takes place from Fri 28 – Sun 30 Nov, with a full performance of the show happening on the Sunday night. With ballroom dance workshops already r u n n i n g , there’s something to suit all tastes and talents. Full details on all the events can be on the website. Have fun!

Full Monty, whole hog! Sing-a-long-a Solange Things are taking a distinctly naughty turn this month, as the Brighton Theatre Group bring the musical production of The Full Monty to the Theatre Royal from 11-15 Nov. In a storyline which is suddenly all-too current, six unemployed industrial workers struggle to support their families during a harsh recession. Their solution – to form an all-male strip troupe – is initially met with derision, but as is the way with these things, determination, guts and good old fashioned hard work win the day. All six of the leading men will be baring everything for the sake of their art, so this promises to be a very popular show!
BABY SISTERS in showbiz don’t usually have it that easy – as Dannii Minogue might well testify – and so far, Solange Knowles is proving to be no exception. Despite releasing a fantastic, Freemasons enhanced single I Decided earlier this summer and a far more cohesive album than big sis Beyonce has yet managed, Solange’s star has yet to ascend further than the horizon of mild popularity. To rectify this, she’s heading out on her first UK tour, and plays at Komedia on Tues 11 Nov. Reputedly an electric live performer, Solange might just be the one to buck the trend and eclipse her big sister.

Beautiful People
MUSIC REVIEW by DJ Stewart T
BBC2, Thursdays, 9pm YIKES. THE NINETIES are now officially so far away we can safely enjoy nostalgia programmes about them and mourn the loss of a more innocent time. What next? Mark my words, before long we’ll be waxing lyrical about the glory days of The One Show. Anyway, what is Beautiful People and why should you watch it? I will tell you. It is the new sitcom from Jonathan Harvey, of Gimme Gimme Gimme ‘fame’. It is based on an apparently best-selling book by Simon Doonan and stars that woman from out of Peep Show, and her from The Kumars at No 42. It is moderately funny and has a quite good soundtrack of specially commissioned ‘pieces’ by the likes of The Feeling and the Minogue sisters. It is set in Reading. It concerns flamboyantly gay teenage boys and is book-ended by peculiarly forced-feeling scenes set in the window of Barney’s in New York. It is worth watching because your choices at 9pm on a Thursday are bit limited, frankly.

“Spotted my dignity down there, son?” “No.”
Paramount, Mon Nov 10 IT’S ALWAYS scary to revisit childhood icons. Take, for example, Bonnie Langford – forever cherished in our hearts as the precociously sweet flame-haired child star, she was willing to endure suspension on wires above a glassy ice-rink in order to re-enter public consciousness. Was it worth it? You’d have to ask her. Happily, the belated fourth instalment of Indiana Jones is absolutely worth it, even if you factor in the really dodgy Tarzan antics half way through. Old-fashioned enough to sit happily with the original trilogy but fast-paced enough to keep today’s ADD audiences satisfied, it’s like settling into a comfy pair of slippers, only ones with a scorpion in them, obviously. Shia LaPretentiousName does a good Indy Jr, and it’s literally a joy to have Karen Allen back as Marion. And quit grumbling about the aliens, you were willing to accept a thousand-yearold Templar Knight and a supernatural Ark of the Covenant before – what’s the ruddy problem?
Beyonce Single Ladies/If I Were A Boy. Single out 10 Nov
IT’S AN EARLY Christmas for all Beyonce fans with this AA Side. If I Were A Boy is definitely the weaker of the two tracks. A mellow mid tempo lament, with Beyonce voicing her wish to be a boy(?!) Single Ladies is the stand out upbeat track. With minimal production showcasing Knowles’ vocals perfectly. It is in a similar vein to Get Me Bodied from her previous record, and is a great taster to her forthcoming album I Am...Sasha Fierce.

Dante’s Numbers The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein by David Hewson IN THE seventh of David Hewson’s Italian-based police procedurals built around the Roman detective Nic Costa and the closeknit team with whom he works, the action moves from congested Rome to fog-bound San Francisco. Events connected with the production and world premiere of a movie epic based upon Dante’s Inferno suggests that a maniac is out the wreck the film’s chances of success. What appears to be an attempt to murder the beautiful leading actress and the singularly brutal murder of the leading man (the latter broadcast to millions on the internet) confirm that something sinister is going on and when the premiere is moved from Rome to San Francisco, Costa and his team accompany it. A further attempt on the life of the leading actress (by now emotionally involved with Costa) is an indication that the maniac has followed Inferno to America and intends to continue with his attempts on the lives of those connected with the film. Hewson is particularly adroit at cunning plots and Dante’s Numbers has a plot of mouth-watering deviousness which, to a large extent, hinges on Alfred Hitchcock’s fifties classic Vertigo. The Costa books are compulsively readable, intriguing commentaries on contemporary society which have their roots in the historical past. This latest outing is as good as they get.
Dante’s Numbers (£16.99) is out now, published by Macmillan.
by Peter Ackroyd IN THE Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, Peter Ackroyd re-imagines Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein by setting it in early nineteenth century England. In this version, Frankenstein, son of a wealthy Swiss merchant, studies at Oxford (his closest friend is poet Percy Bysshe Shelley) and then moves himself to London, comfortable lodgings in Jermyn Street and a laboratory in down-at-heel Limehouse. As in Mary Shelley’s classic original, his experiments with Cadavers (with the assistance of a trio of body-snatchers) result in the creation of a creature, here a friend returned by Frankenstein to life just hours after his untimely death. After the brutal murders of two women connected to his creator, the creater (monster by circumstance rather than design) develops a conscience and begins to long for an unattainable death. By the end, Frankenstein has become utterly confused (deranged?) and the reader is left pondering the divided nature of fiction’s archetypal mad scientist. As with everything Ackroyd writes, London is the lovingly described prime character, and yet though The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein is always highly readable, one cannot help wondering why the author felt inclined to write pastiche rather than something more original.
The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein (£16.99) is out now published by Chatto & Windus.
THE REIGNING Strictly Come Dancing champ makes a welcome return to the scene with one of the catchiest choruses of the year. Produced by Xenomania, the team behind Cheryl and the Girls Aloud crew, Alesha’s genre of choice this time has clearly been influenced by her time on Strictly. Latin beats in abundance makes this song impossible not to dance to. There is also a slight whiff of Mambo No.5 in there, but don’t let that put you off!

Jesus is Sending You This Message
Single out 3 Nov
by Jim Grimsley THERE ARE several strikes against Jim Grimsley’s Jesus is Sending You This Message. For a start, the title is thoroughly unappetizing. Secondly, anyone picking up this collection of short stories is likely to be deterred by the Introduction by Dorothy Allison. Ms Allison’s prose is reminiscent of those gushingly insincere speeches by the most ghastly female characters in the plays of Tennessee Williams. That Grimsley is labelled as ‘one of the very best Southern novelists of his generation’ doesn’t help either, it sets up a series of expectations that simply aren’t met. Hyperbole is generally more destructive than helpful. What Grimsley is good on, however, is creating a real sense of disquiet. In the Virtual Maiden, for instance, there is something curiously disturbing about the unequal relationship shared by an older and a younger man and the disruption that is caused when they take on a Down’s Syndrome person as their cleaner. Wendy is another unsettling tale – about a man using organically created dolls as sex toys in an attempt to wean him away from pre-pubescent girls. Some of the stories (We Move in a Rigorous Line, Wendy, Unbending Eye) employ elements of fantasy or science fiction, some are irritatingly discursive (Stanley Karenina, Jesus is Sending You This Message) and several are downright inconsequential. Though sometimes interesting, taken as a whole this collection must ultimately be described as very uneven.
Jesus is Sending You This Message (£8.99) is out now, published by Alyson Books/Turnaround.

Ani DiFranco: One Righteous Babe Folk legend and political pocket rocket Ani DiFranco talks to Kelly Smith about freedom of choice, the power of music, and patriarchs in skirts. WITH ITS celebration of life and love, Ani DiFranco’s new album Red Letter Year evokes a rare stillness for the spirited singer-songwriter who has made a record almost every twelve months and has toured non-stop since bucking the mainstream music machine to set up her own label, Righteous Babe, in the early nineties. But after taking time out to have her first child, as well as produce the album, the Little Folksinger famous for making a big noise is back on the road doing what she does best. Her transatlantic tour saw her play in London on 29 October, once again reacquainting with her British fans. As a performer whose priority is her music rather than her media persona, DiFranco says she enjoys a greater sense of autonomy on this side of pond. “In Europe in general, I feel I escape the stereotype and become more of an artist in a way,” she admits. “People over there haven’t had the decades of me-
Human Behaviour Niall McMurray spends some quality time with the Human League. THREE DECADES in showbusiness is the kind of lifespan more commonly associated with the dinosaurs of entertainment, but incredibly, synth-pop pioneers the Human League are in this very category. Formed in Sheffield in 1977, the League were on the fringes of popularity until the early eighties, when the addition of Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley transformed them into a hit-making machine that has endured to this day. As they gear up for the Steel City Tour, which unites them with their contemporaries Heaven 17 and ABC, I asked the group’s Joanne Catherall why they’ve survived. “One of the reasons is that Susan and I don’t write any of the songs, so there’s not really anything for us to fall out over!” she laughs. “We all have a different role to fulfil, so there’s no time for rivalries.” What about rivalries with their tour-mates? “Oh, that whole eighties jealousy didn’t last very long – it was only because the original Human League split to form Heaven 17, and that was over in a couple of years!” Joanne and Susan were famously recruited into the band
but being a pop star is better, and I certainly don’t class it as being a proper job!” With the tour arriving in Brighton in December, I ask Joanne if she has any special memories of the city. “Brighton audiences are really good – we do have something of a camp following,” she giggles, “which makes Brighton ideal for us! And we did a Live DVD from Brighton a few years ago – of course we didn’t make a penny from it but that’s the Human League for you!” Refreshingly honest The Human League about the band’s current situation – “There The Brighton Centre is something new on the way, but we don’t Part of the Steel City Tour have a record company Fri 5 Dec and none of us have a www.brightoncentre.co.uk clue about the internet”, the Human League directly from school, on one continue to exist because sucoccasion having to get out of cessive generations have disclasses early to go and perform covered and been inspired by on Top of the Pops. Did they their masterful, slightly dark but ever envisage getting a proper always melodic take on pop. job? With their live show now honed “No! I don’t think I was ever cut to perfection and audiences out for the nine to five thing,” ad- around the world still clamourmits Joanne. “Susan and I had ing to see them, who would already made plans to stay in bet against the Human League education as long as humanly sticking around for another thirty possible to avoid getting a job – years? Not me.
dia bullshit about me and take my music for what it is.” What her music is essentially about is freedom of expression. DiFranco has always been an affirming figure for the gay community – not least her adoring lesbian fanbase – both through her intimate lyrics, which explore loving both sexes, and her political activism. And although she married producer Mike Napolitano, it’s a world she still identifies with. “I’m a folksinger and behind everybody’s rights to be who they are. Gay rights have always been a part of the struggle.” As has feminism, a misunderstood concept in her eyes. “For all of us our gender informs our whole life from the beginning, whether we want it to or not or whether or not we’re comfortable with it. I feel like my understanding of feminism has deepened over the years, I understand it now as not just a struggle for women’s liberation but for all people’s liberation. There’s just no such thing as starting in patriarchy and end-
ing up in peace. “It’s not just about the frickin’ Condoleeza Rices, the Margaret Thatchers and Sarah Palins – they’re just ages of patriarchy in skirts. We need feminist sensibilities enthused into every level of government and culture in order to really have something that makes sense.” So will DiFranco be voting for Barack Obama, who among the current candidates has perhaps shown the closest thing to feminist tendencies? “Yes, I will indeed,” she laughs. “I’m so frickin’ psyched I can’t tell you.” One of most influential musicians of the last twenty-five years, DiFranco has a profound belief in music as a political and social force. “Music is just a unifying, inspiring, motivating thing that brings us together and it makes us feel stronger, puts us in touch with our joy and our reason to be. I think it’s a very powerful factor in whatever level of society, which is I think what drew me to it when I was a kid. I thought I was going to
be a dancer, and then I went to art school – I loved to draw and paint – but those are forms of art where I found myself so secluded. “Music is just something that happens on the street, in people’s homes, in bars, in the shower. It’s the kind of art we all take very deeply into ourselves and I think that’s why I love it so much.” And that’s why, even with her canon of work and list of achievements, she feels there’s still plenty to do. “I’ve made enough good songs over the years but I haven’t made enough good records, or good representations of those songs. I feel like I’ve only just begun to make good records. I feel like I need to redeem myself in my writing in some way. “My payment comes when people come up to me and tell me how my work has helped them or made them stronger or helped them be sure of themselves. All of my mistakes don’t matter when I’m confronted with one of those folks, because that just makes me feel there’s a reason.”

Tom’s Pick THE BIOGRAPHY of this five-piece band can leave you in no doubt that it is only a matter of time until they hit it big. This year alone Friday Night Hero have been finalists at the prestigious Indy Music Awards and featured as ‘Band of the Month’ in Total Guitar magazine. Taking influences from both Snow Patrol and The Killers, their sound can be described as a rockier version of the Editors. Their lead song Faster is already receiving critical acclaim, and is a true melodic masterpiece. With the indie genre quickly becoming tired and commercial, Friday Night Hero have pulled off the unusual trick of being innovative and interesting whilst remaining true to their roots. Friday Night Hero play at Hectors House, 52-54 Grand Parade, on Sat 15 Nov, free.

AARON KING is ambient; atmospheric. Live, what everyone is calling ‘the Aaron King experience’, creeps all along your scalp, slides up your face until finally seeping around your corneas, through your tear-ducts and tickling your sinuses as it joins with your ears and what they have let through their furry little holes - until
it drops - just down your throat- with a drip that holds most elegantly in the nest of your core; comfortingly unfamiliar. If violins are the cherry on top of Aaron King’s sundae, then their chord sequence is the whipped cream. Their upcoming single Rebecca has been compared to Belle and Sebastian and they have just completed their EP The Granary Session. Make sure you catch Tommy, Tom, Joe, James, and Aaron King himself on the thirteenth. Aaron King are a rarity fresh-fallen from Brighton’s treasure-trove of talent. Paw their sound. Aaron King play at the Prince Albert, 48 Trafalgar St, BN1, on Thur 13 Nov at 8pm, £4.

fe\/'Ylj`e\jj A revolution in drop-in surgery According to Mehdi Pourani, founder of Hove-based Clinic Nine, something big is happening in UK health care. No longer is it necessary to visit your GP for a referral to treat minor conditions. One80news went for a check up. THIRTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Mehdi Pourani has recently launched what is probably the most stylish and well-equipped private healthcare centre in Brighton and Hove. Minimalist and professional, it’s a slice of Harley Street in the city where you can access a surprisingly wide range of services, from Botox to penis enlargements. “I have this dream of perfect healthcare, where you can have everything under one roof, but it’s on the high street and therefore highly accessible. People can pop in on their lunch
breaks and have treatments done and go back to work, rather than go to their GPs and two or three weeks later finally being seen.” Mr Pourani has been a top-level dental surgeon for more than eight years, specialising in cosmetic and restorative dentistry, dermal and facial aesthetics and laser dentistry. Clinic Nine is his concept - a one-stop shop for all things health and beauty. “The idea was: what does a modern society want?” he says. “I want to take the pain out of accessing healthcare. There’s a common misconception that you must go through your GP before searching out treatment options – this isn’t true. People can walk in here directly and ask for a consultation – it’s a walk in centre. Clinic Nine is the future Why go to a hospital, with a condition like cataracts, and be around sick people, and perhaps pick up MRSA, when you can come to a safe environment like a clinic? “What’s unique about Clinic Nine is that we’re one of the few clinics in the UK that provides so many specialist services under one roof,” he says. “We have clinic rooms but also a fullyfunctioning, healthcare approved theatre. We can do operation procedures in-house. I wanted to bring Harley Street to Brighton.” Brighton, Pourani says, was the obvious choice for his new clinic, pointing out that the city is now a respected and stylish destination and
recognised internationally. “If you go to Spain and you tell people that you’re from Brighton they know it and speak highly of it,” he says. “I think it’s a lot to do with gay people: where the gay people go is fashionable. Gay people have great taste – they know how to dress, they are more stylish. Maybe they have different brains and think differently, who knows? It’s the same in San Francisco. Very trendy.” Interestingly, Pourani notes that there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of men wanting cosmetic or plastic surgery. Ten years ago, he says that almost all of his clients requiring cosmetic dentistry were women; now, gay men make up a large number of his customers. “We do a lot of work here, from plastic surgery (penis enlargements, facial reconstruction, genital reconstruction work) to cosmetic surgery (botox, breast reshaping, facial peels). We’re like an MOT centre! But our success is down to level of service; I want people to have a smooth journey throughout the clinic, and I want people to get the level of service they deserve. Our reputation is very important to us.”

fe\/'Ylj`e\jj Ethical fashion in the Lanes How an independent clothing company with ‘fire in its belly’ is bucking the downward trend.
Pic (c) Gossypium
THERE’S A NEW kid on the block in Brighton’s bustling Lanes shopping area - Fair Trade cotton retailers Gossypium have just opened their second store, following their first branch in Lewes. The company specialises in 100% organic, Fair Trade certified cotton clothes and bed-linen, and in the eight years since its inception has become one of the most successful eco-businesses around. Moving into Brighton was the next logical step, as cofounder Thomas Petit explains. “Brighton is a natural home for us, because Brightonians are already making conscious and informed choices about what they eat and wear,” he says. “Lots of people here care passionately about Fair Trade and sustainability. By operating right outside the global trading system in our own micro-partnership with cotton farmers, we are offering our customers a real alternative.” Thomas and his wife and co-partner Abigail spent two “life-changing” years working among cotton farmers in India, an experience Pic (c) Gossypium which convinced them
that Fair Trade principles were key to their project. “There has never been a more important time to buy Fair Trade,” says Abigail. “We may be feeling the pinch in Britain, but it’s farmers in Asia who are at the sharp end of the global economic crisis, as Western clothing giants demand further price-slashing from their producers or cancel orders at a moment’s notice.” Gossypium favours perennial style over passing trends, creating a range of products that are high in cotton content, luxuriously soft and designed to out-last those of their high street competitors. They even offer a free alteration service for customers who want to combine a much-loved but past its best garment with one of Gossypium’s own stylish pieces – so dig out your wardrobe classics and take them down to the shop’s resident seamstress! Above all, Gossypium is here to stay, says Abigail. “In a financial crisis, quality will out. Cost conscious shoppers are choosing clothes that will still look good next year and beyond.”

The opinions of a pugnacious pug puppy
SIMBA AND LEO are two four month old brothers who came to Lost Cats Brighton after being dumped in a cardboard box. They’re both extremely friendly and affectionate and they love to play together, taking turns chasing each other around the room. These beautiful cats would love to find a new home (with a garden) and a caring owner to adopt them and give them the love that they so much deserve. Lost Cats Brighton is a local charity which aims to relieve the suffering and distress of cats and kittens. They rescue abandoned, unwanted, mistreated, injured and homeless cats and kittens, providing veterinary care, food and accommodation as necessary. Their ultimate goal is to rehome healthy animals whenever possible - which is where one80news readers come in! Please do call if you’d like to visit and meet these great little guys contact Ron or David on 01273 422721 or visit www.lostcatsbrighton. org.uk for more information.
Me and my best friend FOLLOWING LAST issue’s article on Marlow the bin wagon dog, it seems that there are more working pooches out there than we previously thought! Rocky is a six year old Jack Russell/Terrier cross, and every week he and his owner James Tucker can be found at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, where they visit patients and their visitors on the wards. Rocky is a registered dog with the Pets as Therapy charity, which sends animals into hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and care centres to provide therapeutic and relaxing benefits to patients. There are currently
over 3500 dogs and 90 cats performing this service across the UK. “Rocky is the only dog the hospital has at the moment,” says proud owner James. “We’re always on the look out for more dogs to help out!” For now then, Rocky is making the rounds on his own, although as James points out, “sometimes you do get some very surprised looks when you are walking around a hospital with a dog!” If you think your pet dog or cat would make a good hospital visitor, contact www. petsastherapy.org for more information.
I WROTE last week about Mother’s search for human love and I think she was a bit disappointed that the offers didn’t come flooding in. So, in the words of Hazell Dean, Mother is still ‘searchin’, looking for love…’. The mention of huge haired eighties icon Hazell leads me to this week’s whimsical segment of Pug Life. In true slightly mad diva style Mother has been making up songs and dedicating them to yours truly. The effort of trying to tell her that singing the theme tune to Eastenders to a dog, having changed the words to ‘she is Mummy’s baby girl, with her squashy face, her fur and her tail curled…’ - may be one
of the reasons she is single. So I sit back, chew on my pig’s ear and rock my head gently to whatever choon she is murdering. Her current favourite is Kraftwerk’s The Model, reworked as ‘she’s addictive she is like a drug…. da da da da da da da, I don’t need no k-hole ‘cos my drug is pug…da da da da da da da…’ Hmmm. Like I said Mother is still single. Just quickly, there is a road in Hove called Hazeldene Meads. What a fantastic tribute from the residents to a true diva! Mother take note, you don’t get streets named after you by singing songs to dogs...

For a sensational Bonfire night BONFIRE NIGHT signals the start of winter, and while for most of us it’s a fun evening, it’s always one of the busiest of the year for the emergency services. It’s advisable to attend an organised event, but if you do decide to have your own firework display, these tips will help ensure the night goes smoothly and safely!
Pics (c) Ellis Parrinder/Attitude
SEEN 3SIXTY? 1. Bonfires should be at least 18 metres (60ft) away from houses, trees, hedges, fences or sheds. 2. Anyone handling fireworks should make sure they have adequate eye protection and gloves. 3. Never go back to a firework after it has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode. 4. Always keep pets indoors, the noise from fireworks can be extremely frightening. 5. Make sure any fireworks you buy are suitable for the size of your garden and conform to British Standards (BS 7114).

of Brighton and Hove No.1 Brighton Pier to Saltdean Lido
INSPIRED BY our recent interview with Corinne Drewery from Swing Out Sister (issue 33) where she extolled the virtues of a brisk perambulation, we’ve decided to feature a walk in each issue to keep you active during the winter months! First up is very pleasant and not too strenuous walk: Brighton Pier to the historic Saltdean Lido. When facing the pier, turn left and make your way along Madeira Drive alongside the electric railway – this route will also take you past the nudist beach and a quick detour down to the beach will give you a lovely view of the Regency splendour of Sussex Square. Cut through the centre of the marina, and bear right once you come to the car park ramp at the end of the road. Once you’ve crossed the bridge continue on about 100 metres and head for the cliff path. Then it’s on towards Rottingdean, where you can stop for refreshments if you’re so inclined! Continuing along the cliffside path, you’ll find secluded rock pools and views of almost deserted beaches. Before long you’ll have reached Saltdean, where a quick duck under the subway will bring you to the Lido – well worth the effort! Allow at least an hour for this walk, although with so much to see you might want to take a little longer...

A place where everyone shines. We live in a vibrant and diverse city. The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is an integral part of this energy. It’s our role as a council to confront discrimination and homophobia in all its forms. A key part of achieving this is ensuring we attract and retain a workforce that truly represents the community we serve. We’ve put in place a number of initiatives to help this happen including an LGBT Workers Forum, recruitment campaigns, a diversity mentoring programme and achieving StoneWall Diversity Champion membership.

fe\/'YXZbgX^\j Editor’s postscript SO, THERE are apparently twelve (only twelve?) Premiership footballers who secretly play for a different team entirely. The recent minor media frenzy surrounding this subject has proved to be quite interesting, in that it’s been reported in a fairly well-balanced manner. A few years ago I would have expected the coverage to focus on the ‘Secret Shame!’ of these dozen sportsmen, but by and large the attention has switched to the internalised homophobia seemingly inherent in football and how unacceptable it is in the twenty-first century. It’s a fair point. Just what is it about football – and to a large degree, football fans – that make coming out so incomprehensible? Why has a cause which has made such great strides in recent years stalled in this particular arena? Justin Fashanu, so far the only major footballer in the world to publicly acknowledge his homosexuality saw his career and personal life fall apart in quick
succession, a fate which may well prey on the minds of today’s crop of closeted players. There’s no denying times have changed, but on terraces up and down the country it might as well still be the seventies. The mob mentality that is only now learning that racist chants are unacceptable still has a long way to go. They can’t reconcile the fact that a man who has sex with other men might have infilitrated their ranks, and worse still, that he might be one of the best players on the pitch. They might even have idolised him, and what would that say about their own sexualities? Absolutely nothing, of course. But casual homophobia, with little or no thought behind it, is the hardest kind to eradicate, and it’s difficult to imagine these twelve players braving the storm that would inevitably accompany any announcement. However, another kind of mob, several million strong, will be cheering them on when and if they do. Here’s hoping.

Fish dining taken to the Max Charlie dines Regency-style in the heart of the Steine at the newly-opened Max’s Sea Grill. OVERLOOKING THE STEINE is the elegant Regency style dining room of Max’s Sea Grill in the relatively new Royal York Hotel. It was a gorgeous autumn afternoon when we arrived at the Royal York for lunch. Greeted at the door by the very charming concierge, Colin, we proceeded through the beautifully restored lobby to our table. Seated on a fabulously upholstered Regency chair at a polished wooden table and surrounded by stunning flock wallpapers and portraits of ancient aristocracy and royalty, including the Prince Regent and the Duke of York, after whom the original hotel was named in 1819. The menu has been created by Kristain Smith–Wallace, (ex Head Chef, No.1 Paxton Place). Kristain says that “using the right ingredients to create the perfect balance of flavours” is what his food is all about. Ingredients are locally sourced as much as possible and the emphasis is on fish and shellfish, although there are a few meat options for the carnivores out there! Starters are all at £5 and include: Mediterranean fish soup, Max’s king prawn cocktail, salmon fish cake with beurre blanc sauce and pan fried salt and pepper squid with sweet chilli dressing. We opted for the king prawn cocktail and salmon fish cake. My prawn cocktail was full of prawns in a light Rose Marie sauce and my companion’s fish cake was hearty and packed with layers of flavour with a perfectly delicious beurre blanc sauce. For our mains I opted for chargrilled line caught sea bass with lime butter and my companion went for the Royal York fish pie. To accompany we ordered a side of minted new potatoes and green beans. Both dishes were simply presented. My fillet of sea bass was fresh and nicely cooked and complemented well by the lime butter. The fish pie was heavenly and the sauce - mmmmh! A tri-
angle of light pastry sat on top of it, completing the dish. Mains here are £10.50 and one can choose
Desserts are £3.95 and include: apple tart tatin, exotic fruit salad marinated in vanilla and lemon grass, sticky toffee pudding and lemon cheese cake. Dining here was a relaxed elegant experience and Danny, the Restaurant Supervisor, made our lunch very enjoyable including filling us in on the fabulous history of this building. To end it all we received a tour of some of the beautifully appointed suites in the hotel: all painstakingly restored. If you want a different dining experience in sumptuous, relaxed surroundings with good, simple dishes, Max’s Sea Grill will make you very welcome

RUSSELL GRANT
Competition Time!
Aries - 21 March - 20 April You won’t like just fitting in with the crowd; you are your own person and not likely to be influenced by anyone. You should make time to unwind at a favourite haunt with special friends or get away from it all and go somewhere totally different where you can meet new people from new backgrounds.
Taurus - 21 April - 21 May Complaining about your partner’s friends could cause tension in your closest relationship. Save yourself an apology: think before you speak over the next few days. You should take care not to be impetuous or imperious with someone close, maybe you need to live with the fact that there will always be some things you will never agree on.
Gemini - 22 May - 21 June If everyday chores are starting to get you down, you need to get yourself organised. Make sure other people pull their weight and actually tidy up after themselves and don’t leave you to pick up the pieces of their half finished jobs. Think about it now, make your move, and wait to see the results.
Cancer - 22 June - 23 July You could meet someone over the next few days who will be a wonderful and fascinating person on lots of different levels. This is a positive period for you as a world of opportunities opens up before you inviting you to take on fresh challenges and welcome new ideas, influences and individuals into your life.
Leo - 24 July - 23 August You’re being constantly challenged by events and people and it leaves you feeling strangely powerless. Getting angry or avoiding people who annoy you is not an answer. You will have to be the positive force that changes things for the better. It may be an uphill battle but sooner or later you’ll make people sit up and take notice of your ideas.
Virgo - 24 August - 23 September Joining a club, society or community might be the best thing you’ve done in a long time. If you’re working you’ll find it hard to fit in with colleagues and fellow workers so you need a chance to meet likeminded people and make new friends. If you have a difficult situation to resolve do it diplomatically or wait a wee while before you do anything.

Libra - 24 September - 23 October Money you’d hoped to have received by now gets delayed causing you a lot of hassle. Solving problems won’t be easy because you have to rely on other people. Scorpio - 24 October - 22 November
John Montgomery - 21 Kensington Place
Harmony in a close partnership is fragile at best; a number of problems have built up over recent times. You might feel unloved and unappreciated but it’s not a good idea to kick off now. You need to tread carefully in all relationships and more importantly, avoid an argumentative friend or colleague who seems to be enjoying having rows.
THE LITERARY agent and author John Montgomery (1916-1987) was born in Edinburgh, but after becoming an orphan was moved to Brighton in 1922 and educated at Brighton College. At the age of nineteen he was publicity manager at the film studios at Shepperton and during World War II served with the Royal Sussex Regiment, seeing action in Libya, Italy, Iran, Iraq and Syria. After the war he joined the A D Peters literary agency where his clients included the novelist Evelyn Waugh (“I think the Americans would make an absolutely awful film of Men at Arms…” he wrote in 1959). Montgomery’s numerous books include titles for children (Foxy, My Friend Foxy); novels (Mr Sparrow, Village Green); books on Sussex (West Sussex, Brighton Sketchbook); books on cats (The World of Cats, Arthur – The Television Cat) and, under the pen-name Douglas Plummer, Queer People (‘The truth about the homosexual’s way of life that everyone should know’). A writer for the long-defunct Brighton and Hove Gazette and an early contributor to Gay News, John Montgomery was a regular at such venues as The Cricketers and The Curtain Club.
Sagittarius - 23 November - 21 December There is no reason to change your behaviour to keep a friend or colleague quiet. If someone criticises the way you do things you should either ignore them or give as good as you get. You can set a trend for the months to come by standing up for what you know is right and not allowing anyone to browbeat you into acting against your principles.
Capricorn - 22 December - 20 January There’s something you have to do that will put you at the centre of events. Whether you’re going for an interview, taking the lead of a team of people or getting involved in a campaign that’s near and dear to your heart, once you set the wheels in motion it will all be plain sailing. Your self confidence will be given a big boost thanks to the success you make of things over the next few days and weeks so don’t be afraid to rise to the challenge and go for gold.
Aquarius - 21 January - 19 February It is possible to arrive at an amicable solution to a problem that’s been hanging over your head. Talking to the other people involved helps you understand their position and they in turn will be happy to compromise. Your life could be very relaxed and comfortable if you can open up and share your feelings with those who matter most to you.
Pisces - 20 February - 20 March A relative, your boss or an older colleague is on a power trip and treating you like an apprentice or underling. If someone is telling you what you should think, do and say, your temper is sure to boil over sooner rather than later. You must draw a line in the sand and stand up for yourself. Hoist your flag now and start fighting back.
